Andrographis paniculatais a herbaceous plant in the family Acanthaceae, native to China,India and Sri Lanka. It is widely cultivated in southern Asia, where it is used to treat infections and some diseases, often being used before antibiotics were created. Mostly the leaves and roots were used for medicinal purposes. Andrographis paniculata is an erect annual herb extremely bitter in taste in each and every part of the plant body. It grows erect to a height of 30-110 cm in moist shady places with glabrous leaves and white flowers having rose-purple spots on the petals. Flowers are small, solitary in panicles. Fruit is approximately 2 cm long. Seeds are numerous, yellow-brown in colour. In many languages, it is named king of bitters, or bitter of the earth The genus Andrographis consists of 28 species of small annual shrubs essentially distributed in tropical Asia. Only a few species are medicinal, of which A. paniculata is the most popular. It has many common names for different ...
Abstract:. Introduction: Cervical cancer ranks 4th in terms of the mortality rates and incidence of all cancers in women (GLOBOCAN 2018). In last decade, there is a significance progress in cancer therapy followed by an increase in the cost of cancer treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to have therapeutic innovations that are expected to reduce the cost of cervical cancer therapy. One therapeutic innovation that is currently being intensively carried out is herbal medicine. Some researchers have found that some plant extracts have anti-cancer properties that can be an alternative treatment for cancer, such as some plants with the genus Ruellia, such as Ruellia tuberosa and Ruellia squarrosa. However, research on the anticancer activity of the species of Ruellia brittoniana, especially the flowers, is still limited. Objective: Aim of this study is to examine anti-cervical cancer activity of R. brittoniana flower. Methods: R.brittoniana flowers were obtained from Depok, West Java, Indonesia. The ...

Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees (Acanthaceae) is a medicinal plant used in many countries. Its major constituents are diterpenoids, flavonoids and polyphenols. Among the single compounds extracted from A. paniculata, andrographolide is the major one in terms of bioactive properties and abundance. Among the andrographolide analogues, 14-deoxy-11,12-didehydroandrographolide is immunostimulatory, anti-infective and anti-atherosclerotic; neoandrographolide is anti-inflammatory, anti-infective and anti-hepatotoxic; 14-deoxyandrographolide is immunomodulatory and anti-atherosclerotic. Among the less abundant compounds from A. paniculata, andrograpanin is both anti-inflammatory and anti-infective; 14-deoxy-14,15-dehydroandrographolide is anti-inflammatory; isoandrographolide, 3,19-isopropylideneandrographolide and 14-acetylandrographolide are tumor suppressive; arabinogalactan proteins are anti-hepatotoxic. The four flavonoids from A. paniculata, namely 7-O-methylwogonin, apigenin, onysilin and 3,4
The first point that strikes us in considering this list of 55 genera, is that they are very widely distributed in the vegetable series. They are more common in the family of the Leguminosae than in any other, and next in order in that of the Acanthaceae and Malpighiaceae. A large number, but not all the species, of certain genera, as of Oxalis and Viola, bear cleistogamic as well as ordinary flowers. A second point which deserves notice is that a considerable proportion of the genera produce more or less irregular flowers; this is the case with about 32 out of the 55 genera, but to this subject I shall recur.. I formerly made many observations on cleistogamic flowers, but only a few of them are worth giving, since the appearance of an admirable paper by Hugo Von Mohl, whose examination was in some respects much more complete than mine. (8/4. Botanische Zeitung 1863 page 309-28.) His paper includes also an interesting history of our knowledge on the subject.. Viola canina.. The calyx of the ...

The tribal relationships of the Gesneriaceae are investigated using ndhF sequences. A full analysis of 70 taxa including 16 species from the Scrophulariaceae, Bigoniaceae, and Acanthaceae as outgroups, resulted in two most-parsimonious trees of 5610 steps each. In all trees the Gesneriaceae were a monophyletic group and Paulownia was the closest single-species outgroup for the analysis. Further analyses eliminated all but the members of the Gesneriaceae and Paulownia in order to better asses relationships within the family. The smaller analysis resulted in a single most-parsimonious tree of 4613 steps. The Klugieae are identified as the sister to the remainder of the family and could potentially be separated as a distinct subfamily. The subfamilies Cyrtandroideae (excluding Klugieae) and Gesnerioideae are monophyletic. The placement of Coronallthereae in Cyrtandroideae does not have support from this analysis, whereas its placement in Gesnerioideae is supported. Alternatively Coronanthereae could be
Euphorbia Linnaeus, 1753 (Euphorbiaceae) is one of the most diverse and complex genera among the angiosperms, showing a huge diversity in morphologic traits and ecologic patterns. In order to improve the knowledge of the karyotype organization of Euphorbia hirta (2n = 18) and E. hyssopifolia (2n = 12), cytogenetic studies were performed by means of conventional staining with Giemsa, genome size estimations with flow cytometry, heterochromatin differentiation with chromomycin A3 (CMA) and 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and Giemsa C-banding, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with 45S and 5S rDNA probes, and impregnation with silver nitrate (AgNO3). Our results revealed small metacentric chromosomes, CMA+/DAPI0 heterochromatin in the pericentromeric regions of all chromosomes and CMA+/DAPI− in the distal part of chromosome arms carriers of nucleolar organizing regions (NORs). The DNA content measurements revealed small genomes for both species: E. hirta with 2C = 0.77 pg and E. hyssopifolia
The silk remnant panels were dyed during my solo visit to Sa Pa 2018, I went to visit the home of a tribeswoman, and using local natural plants; we created these wondrous colours.. Colour is integral to each tribes identity; it is what distinguishes one tribe from another and the creativity in its use is a mark of pride.. Peristrophe bivalvis, also known as lá cẩm in Vietnamese or magenta leaves, is a natural purple dye that is also used for dyeing sticky rice. Dioscorea cirrhosa, known as dye yam in English and nhuộm củ nâu in Vietnamese, is a root plant that looks like a potato, creating a natural brown colour. Strobilanthes cusia or Assam indigo, which is also known as big leaf indigo creates the trademark Sa Pa blue dye. The tribes often locate rare plants, like the nghiên tree. Some of these plants, like Coscinium fenestratum, not only produce an unusual yellow, dye but are also medicinal, used in Ayurveda and other treatments across Asia. Other plants used for dyes include green ...

Bauhinia monandra (Kurz), traditionally use in the treatment of diabetes with established significant anti-diabetic activity was investigated for its antioxidant constituents since the activity demonstrated can be linked to the presence of antioxidant compounds. Bioassay directed fractionation of the ethyl acetate soluble leaves extract has led to isolation of two active compounds identified as: Quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (1) and Quercetin (2). The molecular structures elucidations of both compounds were carried out using spectroscopic studies (1H NMR, 13C NMR and MS). These compounds are reported from this species for the first time. A DPPH spectrophotometric assay was used to evaluate the antioxidant potential of the compounds. Compound 2 had higher antioxidant activity while Compound 1 had lower activity than L-ascorbic acid which was used as standard ...

The national recovery strategy for maritime meadow species at risk addresses the recovery of one extirpated butterfly; the island marble (Euchloe ausonides insulanus), one endangered butterfly; the Taylors checkerspot (Euphydryas editha taylori); and seven endangered or threatened plant species: bearded owl-clover (Triphysaria versicolor spp. versicolor), bears-foot sanicle (Sanicula arctopoides), coastal Scoulers catchfly (Silene scouleri ssp. grandis), golden paintbrush (Castilleja levisecta), prairie lupine (Lupinus lepidus var. lepidus), purple sanicle (Sanicula bipinnatifida) and seaside birds-foot lotus (Lotus formosissimus). In Canada, these species occur (or occurred) primarily in Garry oak and associated ecosystems and are largely restricted to low elevation, marine-influenced habitats. Although the range of all species extends into the United States, many of the species are widely disjunct from the US populations. The Species at Risk Act (SARA, Section 37) requires the competent

The rare casual Lythrum hyssopifolia was reported from the locality where it was already found in 1995. The population was still present in 1998, and flourishing: thousands of plants were seen. Juncus capitatus has been found on three new localities in 1998. In the eastern parts of the province of Noord-Brabant the localities are near the old, and now extinct localities. In the western part of this province its appearance is new. It is argued that seeds must have been living for over 200 years in the soil seed bank ...

Nicolas Fouquet must have commissioned this table with the intention of having a support made for it, but his fall from favor meant that he did not have time to do this. The tabletop measures one meter forty-five in diameter; because it is so large and heavy, it needed a very solid means of support. The leg is made up of a central column, decorated with acanthus leaves and resting on four lions paws, which is connected both at top and base to four half-figures of children emerging from the lions paws. Lions paws and acanthus leaves were recurring motifs in Louis XIV furniture, as were figures of children on plinths. They were frequently found in garden statuary, notably on the water pyramid in the gardens at Versailles. Although no sketches have been preserved, the design of this piece can be attributed to Charles Le Brun as it shows all the marks of his style. Indeed, furniture in gilded wood had become a timely solution to replace furniture in cast silver, as it still kept its sumptuous ...

The main cause of mortality in type 2 diabetes mellitus is a cardiovascular disease. Among the many risk factors of atherosclerosis in diabetic patients, LDL(low density lipoprotein) cholesterol is now being regarded as one of the most important modifiable one. Recent researches have revealed that the plasma LDL could be sub-divided according to the size of the particles into large buoyant LDL and small dense LDL. Small dense LDL is very atherogenic. Increased plasma triglyceride and the presence of insulin resistance are proved to be positively correlated well with the amount of small dense LDL in diabetic patients.. We would like to see omega-3 acid(OMACOR) which is now widely used in clinical practice to decrease plasma triglyceride could change the amount of plasma small dense LDL in type 2 diabetic patients with combined hyperlipidemia.. This trial is consisted of 6 weeks of wash out for the patients already taking statin. After that, daily 4 grams of omega-3 acid(OMACOR) will be ...

Infections induced by influenza viruses, as well as coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic induced by severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) led to acute lung injury (ALI) and multi organ failure, during which traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) played an important role in treatment of the pandemic. The study aimed to investigate the effect of Indigo Naturalis on ALI induced by influenza A virus (IAV) in mice. The anti-influenza and anti-inflammatory properties of aqueous extract of Indigo Naturalis (INAE) were evaluated in vitro. BALB/c mice inoculated intranasally with IAV (H1N1) were treated intragastrically with INAE (40, 80 and 160 mg/kg/day) 2 h later for 4 or 7 days. Animal lifespan and mortality were recorded. Expression of high mobility group box-1 protein (HMGB-1) and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) were evaluated through immunohistological staining. Inflammatory cytokines were also monitored by ELISA. INAE inhibited virus replication on Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells and

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The extensive biodiversity of plants in Southeast Asia and inadequate research hitherto warrant a continued investigation into medicinal plants. On the basis of a careful review of fresh medicinal plant usage to treat cancer from previous ethnobotanical interviews in Singapore and from the traditional uses of the indigenous plants, fresh leaves of seven locally grown medicinal plant species were evaluated for anti-proliferative activity. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the anti-proliferative activity of local medicinal plant species Clausena lansium Skeels, Clinacanthus nutans (Burm. f.) Lindau, Leea indica (Burm. f.) Merr., Pereskia bleo (Kunth) DC., Strobilanthes crispus (L.) Blume, Vernonia amygdalina Delile and Vitex trifolia L. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Fresh, healthy and mature leaves of the seven medicinal plants were harvested from various locations in Singapore and Malaysia for Soxhlet, ultrasonication and maceration extractions in three different solvents ...

Genetic variation within and among 11 natural populations of Pterocarpus macrocarpus Kurz. from different forest habitats in Thailand was examined by starch gel electrophoresis of 18 loci coding for 11 enzymes. The species possesses a high level of isozyme variation. The percentage of polymorphic loci per population ranged from 66.67 to 100% with a mean of 82.32% and the number of alleles per locus per population ranged from 2.44 to 2.94, averaging 2.67. Observed average population heterozygosity, at 0.222, was lower than the expected average population heterozygosity (0.246) and the estimate of FIS, at 0.099, suggests some degree of inbreeding within populations. There was a high degree of among-population differentiation. All 18 loci exhibited allelic heterogeneity and the estimate of FST was 0.12. Cluster analysis revealed an east-west pattern of population grouping, in accordance with significant correlations between allelic frequencies and longitudes at eight loci. The correlation ...
Antibacterial activities of 7 plant extracts were evaluated against 5 bacterial strains using well diffusion assay at different concentration (10%, 20% and 30%) and the results were compared with therapeutically used antibiotics. Rapid formation of inhibition zones within 24 hours of incubation was obtained with ethanolic extracts (30%) of Justicia gendarussa against all tested strains. Ethanol extracts (30%) of the Gymnema sylvestre produces a maximum inhibition zone of 24mm against Pseudomonas aeruginosa which are known to be multi-resistant to drugs, while the standard values lies behind 17mm. Cluster analysis was applied to find out the similar groups of solvent extracts in their antibacterial action. Ethanolic plant extracts figured a separate cluster with the high antibacterial activity. Significant correlations were observed between the extract concentrations and antibacterial activity (P , 0.01).. Key words: Antibacterial activity, plant extracts, inhibition zone, cluster analysis ...
Abstract:. Introduction: The leaves of Ruellia tuberosa L. have been known to demonstrate strong antioxidant and xanthine oxidase (XOD) inhibitory activities. The aim of this study was to isolate antioxidant and XOD inhibitor from the leaves of the plants. Methods: Isolation of antioxidant and XOD inhibitor were conducted using chromatography techniques. The structure of the isolated compound was elucidated by spectroscopic methods. Read full article from Synchronicity Pharma. San Francisco August 27, 2019 - Synchronicity Pharma (Synchronicity), a clinical-stage company focused on therapeutic translation of circadian clock biology, today announced the publication of new preclinical research demonstrating that the modulation of circadian clock components may provide a novel therapeutic approach for treating glioblastoma, the most common form of brain cancer. The paper, which highlighted research led by scientific co-founder, Steve Kay, Ph.D. and collaborator, Jeremy Rich, M.D., was published in the latest edition of Cancer Discovery, a leading peer-reviewed oncology journal.. The results demonstrate that glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) have a specific dependence on core clock proteins for their growth and survival. A similar reliance on these core clock proteins was not seen in non-malignant cells nor mature glioblastoma cells. Researchers showed that the clock transcription factors, BMAL1 and CLOCK, were guided by ...

en] An accurate and sensitive method, combining soxhlet extraction, solid phase-extraction and capillary gas chromatography is described for the quantitative determination of one triterpene (lupeol) and three sterols (stigmasterol, campesterol and beta-sitosterol) and the detection of another triterpene (alpha-amyrin) from the aerial part of Justicia anselliana. This is the first method allowing the quantification of sterols and triterpenes in this plant. It has been fully validated in order to be able to compare the sterol and triterpene composition of different samples of J. anselliana and therefore help to explain the allelopathic activity due to these compounds. This method showed that the aerial part of J. anselliana contained (292+/-2)mg/kg of lupeol, (206+/-1)mg/kg of stigmasterol, (266+/-2)mg/kg of campesterol and (184+/-9)mg/kg of beta-sitosterol ...
The population of the medicinal plant, Malabar nut (Justicia adhatoda L) is shrinking in Dun valley due to habitat fragmentation, invasion by Lantana camara, over-exploitation, and an ever-increasing human population - the most important being the increasing demand on land for agriculture, industries and the urbanization. Predicting potential geographic distribution of the species is important from species and habitat restoration point of view. This paper reports the results of a study carried out in the Lesser Himalayan foothills in India (Dun valley) on potential distribution modeling for Malabar nut using Maxent model. The Worldclim bioclimatic variables, slope, aspect, elevation, and the land use/land cover (based on IRS LISS-III) data and 46 spatially well-dispersed species occurrence points were used to predict the potential distribution off. adhatoda in ca. 1877 km(2) study area. Jackknife test was used to evaluate the importance of the environmental variables for predictive modeling. ...

Best/hardiest brackish water plant species I have used: Microsorium pteropus, Hygrophila polysperma, Sagittaria spp., Vallisneria spp., Echinodorus tenellus, Ceratopteris spp., Maintenence:. Like their so-called freshwater counterparts (often the same species), brackish plant cultivation calls for regular fertilization with complete preparations and possible soil addition (fine, w/ clay) mixed into the lower gravel/substrate area. Stumped as to why your plants wont/dont grow? Why their leaves are yellowing? How to make them more luxurious. Often these are matters of too little (sometimes too much) of something. Help is available. Visit the krib on the Internet for troubleshooting information and common-sense solutions (link below). I trust Ive made a large and often enough mention of the benefits of pre-making and storing new/make-up water... J. C. Cogo, J. Prado-Franceschi, M. A. Cruz-Hofling, A. P. Corrado and L. Rodrigues-Simioni. Effect of Bothrops insularis venom on the mouse and chick nerve-muscle preparation. Toxicon 31, 1237-1247, 1993.-The effects of Bothrops insularis venom were examined in vivo in mice and chicks and in vitro using the mouse phrenic nerve diaphragm and chick biventer cervicis muscle preparations. Incubation of the indirectly or directly stimulated mouse preparation with B. insularis venom (20-80 μg/ml) produced an initial increase in twitch tension followed by irreversible blockade. With direct stimulation in the presence of d-tubocurarine, no increase in twitch tension was observed prior to the onset of blockade. A venom-induced effect on presynaptic activity was suggested by the marked increase in the frequency of the mepps recorded in vitro 5-15 min after venom addition. A direct muscular effect was shown by the dose- and time-dependent reduction in the resting membrane potential of the diaphragm. ...

Basic Information. What is radiofrequency ablation?. Radiofrequency ablation is the use of radio waves to heat the fluid around certain structures. When it is used for spinal pain, it effectively destroys the tiny nerves transmitting pain signals to your brain from your facet joints (also called zygaphopyseal joints, see diagram below). Pain from facet joints is common, particularly as the general wear-and-tear on these joints over time causes degeneration and arthritis. Most people with facet joint pain have axial pain (along the spine), usually in the lower lumbar region. Your pain may be worse with lumbar extension, twisting backwards, and prolonged standing. What nerves are targeted?. Radiofrequency ablation is used to target pain from the facet joints, which are the articulating joints between the vertebrae of your spine. The actual nerves being destroyed are called medial branch nerves, and each facet joint receives its innervation from the medial branch at (ascending branch) and one ...

TUESDAY, Oct. 2, 2018 (HealthDay News) - Some complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) may be helpful in the treatment of psoriasis, according to a review published online Sept. 5 in JAMA Dermatology.. A. Caresse Gamret, from the University of Miami, and colleagues conducted a systematic literature review to identify studies evaluating all documented CAM psoriasis interventions. Included interventions had more than one randomized clinical trial (RCT) supporting their use.. The researchers identified 44 RCTs (17 double-blind, 13 single-blind, and 14 nonblind), 10 uncontrolled trials, two open-label nonrandomized controlled trials, one prospective controlled trial, and three meta-analyses. Compared with placebo, topical indigo naturalis (studied in five RCTs with 215 participants) showed significant improvements in psoriasis. Curcumin (evaluated in five studies with 118 participants) showed statistically and clinically significant improvements in psoriasis plaques. Twenty studies evaluated ...

Acromegaly is associated with a variety of cardiovascular disturbances such as left ventricular hypertrophy, diastolic cardiac dysfunction, and hypertension. Left ventricular (LV) dyssynchrony means the impairment of synchronicity and is defined as the loss of the simultaneous peak contraction of corresponding cardiac segments. The objective of this study was to investigate whether acromegalic patients have left ventricular dyssynchrony. Dyssynchrony was evaluated in 30 patients with active acromegaly and 30 controls. All the patients and controls were subjected to a tissue synchronization imaging. The time to regional peak systolic tissue velocity (Ts) in LV by the six-basal-six-mid-segmental model was measured on ejection phase TSI images and four TSI parameters of systolic dyssynchrony were computed. All TSI parameters of LV dyssynchrony increased in patients with acromegaly compared to the controls: the standard deviation (SD) of the 12 LV segments Ts (43.5 +/- A 13.5 vs 26.2 +/- A 12.5, p < ...

A hard look at how for-profit health management organizations have come to be the force they are in our health care system and how their emphasis on the bottom line threatens quality medical care. Wall Street Journal reporter Anders (Merchants of Debt, 1992) reveals how corporations in the 1980s turned to managed care as a way to hold down the mushrooming costs of employee health plans by taking power away from doctors, hospitals, and patients and putting it in the hands of businessmen. Over 55 million Americans are now covered by HMOs, and their numbers are growing at the rate of 100,000 a week. The entrepreneurs who led the way in this astonishing revolution in our health care system come in for some sharp scrutiny (Anders seems to enjoy deploring their greed and flashy lifestyles), but the main focus is on how HMOs function. Anders examines their impact on hospitals, doctors, the pharmaceutical industry, and of course consumers. Hair-raising stories about the refusal to treat seriously ill patients

Spain affirmed Tuesday that gay marriage is constitutional, upholding a law from 2005.. The constitutional court threw out an appeal made seven years ago by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of the Popular Party after gay marriage was made law by then Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. The PP said the socialist government was changing the secular, legal and constitutional definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman and that the change would have repurcusions on Spanish society.. According to El Pais, the law has already allowed over 22,000 couples to marry.. In related news, France is expected to approve a draft law to legalize gay marriage tomorrow amid an intensifying campaign against the plan by Catholic bishops and the right-French presidenwing opposition, the Irish Times reports.. ...
