Janelia Research Campus started as an idea sketched on the back of a napkin. Today, it stands as a research campus where scientists ask, learn, and collaborate on some of neurobiologys biggest unknowns. How did Janelia go from a concept to bustling campus? Part of the answer lies in the first group of scientists, the pioneers of our research, who took a chance on Janelia. They began to build the foundation of scientists, staff, visitors, and friends behind the collaborative culture that drives our science forward.

The location, personnel, and motivation for scientific research have undergone significant changes in the last quarter of the 20th century. Today, graduate students are often situated in research institutes that are separated from their host university and have their own research focus and administration. In Toronto, the University Health Network, Samuel Lunenfeld and Hospital for Sick Children research institutes, among others, host a large number of graduate students: 373, 94, and approximately 500, respectively (1-3). These students are not hospital employees and have identical rights and needs as graduate students located in the university proper. Too often, the unique station of graduate students in hospital-based research institutes is lost in the midst of high-pressure science.. Research institutes are primarily answerable to the foundations and corporate partners that provide funding. In turn, foundations and corporations are accountable to their sponsors and stockholders. Sponsors and ...

From a pure academic concern, what I believe is that every scientist and scientific argument should be open to discussion and criticism. This is the crucial component of recording progress in scientific discoveries and making corrections if there is any misconceptions. In this case, there should be no hesitation or restriction on raising voice of professionals on this matter. When I read your warning on paying attention on signing this petition if tenure is not obtained, I felt like this is something against the followers of a dogmatic believe or political ideology. Are these people raising concerns about a religion and its prophet? Do they treat Darwinism as a religion and Darwin as their prophet, and These clearly show that the scientific community is biased toward the Darwinian views, ignore any scientific counter thinking, and even hunt those raising this issues. In this regard, I support everyone who risk their career for the sake of professionalism. Thanks. Dr. Abdulkadir ...

How is the brain wired to produce behaviors critical for life? This is one of the central scientific questions being addressed at the Janelia Farm campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The HHMI scientists are making amazing progress at Janelia Farm, working in multidiscplinary teams are using both bottom-up and top-down approaches, in a new state-of-the-art $500M facility.. The ultimate aim, of course, is to understand behaviors of the human brain, but the sheer complexity of our brain makes this a daunting challenge. Instead, the HHMI scientists are studying organisms, such as fruit flies and C. elegans (a type of microscopic worm), with relatively simpler nervous systems. Since evolution tends to conserve form and function across species, lessons learned by studying the brains and behaviors of these animals can be used to understand that of humans.. Broadly speaking, the problem is being attacked from two directions. In the bottom-up approach, Drs. Scheffer, Chklovskii, and ...
The EMGO⁺ Institute is in transition towards the Amsterdam Public Health research institute (APH) by merging its EMGO⁺ research with the public health research of the AMC. This transition is part of the future alliance between VUmc and AMC, which is foreseen to materialize early 2018 pending approval by a number of overarching Dutch governmental bodies In order to allow for a smooth transition regarding the research agendas of Academic Medical Centers from January 2017 onwards all our EMGO⁺ activities are now officially part of APH, i.e. one of the eight research institutions of the alliance However, at the same time all current EMGO+ affairs are being settled properly until the end of 2017, because of the current funding cycle of EMGO+. APH is led by Martine de Bruijne, MD, PhD.. For more information about the Amsterdam Public Health research institute we kindly refer you to the APH website.. ...

The obstetrical and gynecological manifestation of Crohns disease is particularly challenging for young women and demands special attention, according to an article in the International Journal of Womens Health. Pregnant women with CD are considered high-risk patients due to associated complications. Some of the prevalent complications are premature birth, low birth weight, and congenital anomalies. To minimize the risk for adverse pregnancy/birth outcomes, it is recommended that remission of CD symptoms be achieved before conception. Treatment of CD in pregnant women is similar to that among the nonpregnant population, and there is no valid reason to terminate it, since most of the drugs are proven to be safe. Women with CD who wish to conceive or are already pregnant need to be properly advised according to the newest guidelines on the subject, given by the European Crohns and Colitis Organization. Gynecological manifestations are another special feature of CD. They are important in that ...

Working across the three institutions, Yu Jing and Luis Gimenez, Ph.D., led the team to determine the structure of the MC4R-and uncovered some unexpected characteristics of the protein that shed new light on how it binds to and interacts with other molecules.. For example, they found a calcium ion binding to both the MC4R and to the primary molecule that the receptor binds. This instance of the bound calcium ion was a first for Stevens and his group, who have determined the structures of many members of this large class of proteins.. "At first it seemed like more of a scientific curiosity. But then further experiments revealed that the calcium is actually required for the function of the receptor," says Stevens, who also was a senior author of the study. "Imagine a lock and key situation; in this case, we found that theres a large key and a small key, and we need both of them to unlock the receptor.". Lex Van Der Ploeg, Ph.D., former Chief Scientific Officer of Rhythm Pharmaceuticals, the ...

Due to the tetrameric composition of protein kinase A (PKA) of both, regulatory and catalytic subunits, inhibition of PKA can be achieved either by inhibitory analogues of cyclic AMP or by structures that block the ATP binding site (isoquinolines, staurosporine analogues). While inhibition of the regulatory subunits prevents the PKA holoenzyme from dissociation and liberation of free active regulatory subunits, a blockade of the catalytic ATP sites stops the phosphorylation process directly. Especially, membrane-permeant ATP site inhibitors, such as H 89, H 8, KT 5720 have become very popular in signal transduction studies, however, there are some serious limitations and potential pitfalls which should be known, in order to avoid drawbacks and disappointments:. ...

One of our main focuses in 2017 was VS-CNV which allows clinicians to directly call CNVs in target regions quicker, easier and more affordably than CMA or MLPA testing. Our clients at Robarts Research Institute shared their recent publication with me which confirms that our time and dedication to our CNV capabilities was well worth it. I am delighted to share their discoveries with our community.. Michael Iacocca and colleagues analyzed 388 samples of patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, a disease caused predominantly by autosomal codominant mutations in the LDL receptor gene (LDRL). The standard method is to use next-gen sequencing to detect SNVs followed by an MLPA test to identify CNVs.
