This paper focuses on senior high school students and the ways that bullying affects their school attendance. Selected items from the 2008 Ghana Global School-based Student Health Survey are analysed first to explore the relationships between the duration and type of bullying and school attendance. Second, we investigate whether having emotional problems, in addition to being bullied, incrementally affects the relationship between bullying and school attendance. Third, we explore the mitigating influence of peer friendships on these relationships. In all cases we provide a gender analysis. The results show that bullying is associated with increased absenteeism for both boys and girls. The analysis of reported emotional problems, however, shows distinct gender differences. For boys, increases in emotional problems are not associated with increased absenteeism for those who are bullied. On the other hand, for girls emotional problems were strongly associated with absenteeism and more so for girls ...
Objectives Sickness absence is the outcome in many epidemiologic studies and is often based on summary measures such as the number of sickness absences per year. In this study the use of modern statistical methods was examined by making better use of the available information. Since sickness absence data deal with events occurring over time, the use of statistical models for survival data has been reviewed, and the use of frailty models has been proposed for the analysis of such data.. Methods Three methods for analyzing data on sickness absences were compared using a simulation study involving the following: (i) Poisson regression using a single outcome variable (number of sickness absences), (ii) analysis of time to first event using the Cox proportional hazards model, and (iii) frailty models, which are random effects proportional hazards models. Data from a study of the relation between the psychosocial work environment and sickness absence were used to illustrate the results.. Results ...
In situation (b) a second absence due to CMD occurs > 28 days after return to work. We define this situation as recurrent sickness absence due to CMD. As in situation a, the person-years are counted from the beginning of the first episode of sickness absence due. to CMDs until the end of the employment period. In situation (c) there is a second episode of absence due to CMDs within 28 days after return to work, which is not counted as a recurrence. In the example, the employee is employed during the entire period. In situation (d) there is an episode of sickness absence due to CMDs lasting more than 1 year. The person-years are counted until 1 year of sickness absence. Fig. 1 Calculation of recurrence Adriamycin density of sickness absence due to common mental disorders The RD of sickness absence due to CMDs in the diagnostic AZD3965 in vivo categories was calculated by dividing the number of employees with recurrent sickness absence due to CMDs by the person-years at risk in the ...
The Norwegian specialist health service has undergone many processes of reorganization during the last three decades. Changes are mainly initiated to increase the efficiency and quality of health care serving an ageing population under the condition of a diminishing labour supply. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of reorganization on long-term sickness absence among different levels of hospital staff. The study draws on panel data on employees of Norwegian public hospitals in 2005 and 2007 (N = 106,715). National register data on individual employees days of medically certified long-term (|16 days) sickness absence were linked with survey measures of actual reorganization executed at each hospital in each year. The surveys, answered by hospital administration staff, measured five types of reorganization: merging units, splitting up units, creating new units, shutting down units and reallocation of employees. The variation in sickness absence days was analysed using random and fixed
In the 2015-16 school year, nearly 102,000 students in Oregon - more than one in six children - were chronically absent from school. Nationally, Oregons chronic absenteeism rate consistently ranks within the bottom 20 percent of states. Chronic absenteeism in Oregon has a disproportionate impact on specific populations: Oregons American Indian and Alaska Native students, students with disabilities, students of color, students experiencing economic disadvantage and students who have received at least one out-of-school suspension ...
AIM: To examine if non-bullied employees at work units (WUs) with workplace bullying have more long-term sickness absence (LTSA) than employees in non-bullying WUs.. METHODS: We included 7229 public health employees from 302 WUs and 3158 responders to a questionnaire on working conditions and health in 2007. WUs were classified into three categories of WUs; 1) no bullying (0% bullied); 2) moderate prevalence of bullying (,10% bullied); and 3) high prevalence of bullying (≥10% bullied). LTSA (≥30 consecutive days of sickness absence) during the following two years was obtained by linkage to the Danish register of sickness absence compensation benefits and social transfer payments.. RESULTS: Non-bullied co-workers in WUs, where bullying was reported had 15 to 22% more LTSA compared with non-bullying WUs.. CONCLUSION: Workplace bullying may be associated with LTSA in the entire WU. ...

Work capacity correlates weakly to disease concepts, which in turn are insufficient to explain sick leave behavior. With data mainly from Sweden, a welfare state with high sickness absence rates, our aim was to develop an explanatory theory of how to understand and deal with work absence and sick leave. We used classic grounded theory for analyzing data from |130 interviews with people working or on sick leave, physicians, social security officers, and literature. Several hundreds of typed and handwritten memos were the basis for writing up the theory. In this paper we present a theory of work incentives and how to deal with work absence. We suggest that work disability can be seen as hurt work drivers or people caught in mode traps. Work drivers are specified as work capacities + work incentives, monetary and non-monetary. Also, people can get trapped in certain modes of behavior through changed capacities or incentives, or by inertia. Different modes have different drivers and these can trap the
But- some voters, including my parents & my girlfriend, might be getting their request for absentee ballots back in the mail. Apparently, they didnt check that they were democrats (despite voting as democrats in the May primary) and despite having filled out their e-mail and phone number, they were mailed additional request forms with instructions- and had to place postage on again.. UPDATE: The BOE has received appx: 4500 requests so far- and appx. 500 have had to be followed up with a letter- mostly because the voter didnt check in the RED box- for voter affiliation is (ALL THE REST OF THE REQUIRED INFO IS IN YELLOW - color joke). Thats appx a 10% FAIL rate.. If youve mailed your absentee back in and want to check if your ballot was received, they do have a crude lookup tool: http://www.mcohio.org/boe/absentee_download/absentee_tracking.cfm. The BOE could have just sent a ballot with a form 10z and saved a step…. but that would be too obvious.. I know someone is out there snickering, ...
Owner/managers of small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) are an under-researched population in terms of psychological distress and the associated health and economic consequences. Using baseline data from the evaluation of the Business in Mind program, a mental health promotion intervention amongst SME owner/managers, this study investigated: (i) prevalence of high/very high psychological distress, past-month sickness absenteeism and presenteeism days in SME owner/managers; (ii) associated, self-reported lost productivity; and (iii) associations between work, non-work and business-specific factors and work attendance behaviours. In our sample of 217 SME owner/managers 36.8% reported high/very high psychological distress. Of this group 38.7% reported past-month absenteeism, 82.5% reported past-month presenteeism, and those reporting presenteeism were 50% less productive as than usual. Negative binomial regression was used to demonstrate the independent effects of socio-demographic, work-related wellbeing
This study aimed to identify the psychosocial determinants that influence the duration of work disability among socially insured patients in Belgium. We found 14 psychosocial determinants that were significantly (p,0.10) related to the time until the end of the sick leave period. This model had a predictive value for long-term sickness absence (,6 months) of 80% (C-index), which indicates good to strong discriminative ability. The external validation of the model still indicated good discriminative ability (75%).. Most of our 14 factors are supported in the literature.12 We found 10 work related-factors; previous researchers have discussed physical work demands as a burden for returning to work.12-16 Den Boer et al also discussed job satisfaction in the case of work capacity at 6-month post-surgery.13 Kausto et al, Netterstrom and Marhold et al discussed the support by colleagues and by employers as important facilitators for returning to work.14 15 17 Meanwhile, Airaksinen did not find evidence ...

Whether excused or unexcused, lost time in the classroom results in a student missing out on valuable academic content as presented by their teacher.. Research has proven that children can suffer academically if they miss 10% or more of school days. We want to work with you to remove any barriers that may prevent your childs attendance at school. We encourage parents to avoid scheduling doctors appointments, vacations, or other activities that cause a child to miss school. Also, if a childs illness impacts regular attendance as defined in the policy, a doctors note will be required to excuse the student upon return.. Excused vs. Unexcused Absences:. An absence is identified as excused or unexcused. OTSD and Oregon Law define excused absences as the following:. o Illness of the student. o Illness of an immediate family member when the students presence at home is necessary. o Emergency situations that require the students absence. o School field trips and school-approved activities. o ...
The Attendance and Prosecution Services main function is to encourage and, where necessary, enforce school attendance; safeguard and promote the welfare of children in order that they may reach their full potential. By law (Education Act 1996), all children of compulsory school age (between five and 16) must get a proper full-time education. You are responsible for making sure this happens, either by registering the child at a school or by making other arrangements which provide an effective education.
This thesis is a study on group differences in alcohol-related sickness absence. It consists of four papers: The first is an extensive review article of international research on the alcohol ?? sickness absence association. The second and third articles present studies of group differences in alcohol-related sickness absence in Norway. The fourth article is a study of group differences in attitudes towards alcohol-related sickness absence and presenteeism in Norway. Paper 1 is a review of the alcohol-absence association, to my knowledge the first review of studies on this topic. Following a literature search of peer reviewed journals, our inclusion criteria were met by 27 articles testing 48 associations. The study found that empirical evidence for an association between alcohol use and both long- and short-term absence was strong. All associations with a high quality score were statistically significant. The association did not vary systematically across measures of alcohol use. The association ...

In the second paper, we studied risk factors for long-term (> 8 weeks) sickness absence due to musculoskeletal disorders (LSM), focusing on the influence of the psychosocial and physical work environment, and a special aim was to reveal any gender differences in the associations. We found that men and women aged 40 and 45 had an LSM risk approximately 50% greater than that of subjects aged 30. There was a strong education gradient for both genders. Low job control had a strong effect, especially in men, whereas the effect of low job security was modest. Having shift/night work or rotating hours had a strong effect on the LSM risk, particularly in men. The associations with the job exposure variables were generally stronger for men; still, the LSM risk was considerably higher for women because of the high risk in women without the studied job exposures. Adding the interaction term (having both psychosocial end physical exposure) to the analysis did not significantly improve the model, and this ...

Whereas women in the 1970s and 1980s increased their overall burden by combining unpaid caregiving tasks on top of working life, the struggle for gender equality has clearly led to results, both at home and in the workplace. Today, mothers have access to considerable assistance in relation to childcare, and men have taken on more of the household chores. In addition, the availability of day-care and after-school programmes has improved dramatically. New technology has also made housework an easier task.. Nonetheless, the second-shift hypothesis, as it is often called, is still often invoked to explain why women in Norway have nearly 70 per cent higher sickness absence than men.. Our study has found no evidence to support the claim that the extra work children entail is the general cause of womens higher sickness absence. And viewed in isolation, we see that having a child in itself does not increase sickness absence among women.. ...
Downloadable! Using microdata on a sample of about 350 workers, employed at an Italian public institute, we explain individual absence rates both considering variables that may be related to health conditions and to variables that may suggest shirking behaviour. Among these variables we especially focus our attention on the influence produced by the behaviour of randomly assigned peers. To handle reflection problems we use the proportion of females in the peer group as instrument of peer absence behaviour. From Two-Stage least square estimates it emerges that social and group interactions play an important role in shaping individual absence behaviour.
Johnson reported that school absenteeism and visits to doctors office are increased for influenza-like illness as are prescriptions for anti-viral medication. Dr. Johnson said that complicating the picture is an increased incidence of strept throat and scarlet fever in Mammoth Lakes. He said that these infections can occur separately or together in the same person at the same time.. Mono County, said Johnson, has not seen an increase in EMS transports, Emergency Room visits or hospitalizations so far, but Northern Inyo Hospital has seen an increase in Emergency Room visits and hospitalizations.. On the wider scene, in the US, 22 children died last week alone from H1N1 infections. This brings the total so far to 114 children. Previously, according to Dr. Johnson, no more than 153 children have died in any one flu season. 28 pregnant women have died from H1N1 so far. Unprecedented for this time of year is the news that 48 states are reporting widespread activity.. Very little H1N1 vaccine has ...
A total of 179 Tyneside children who had suffered at least one episode of wheeze since school entry were seen at the age of 7. All but 14 had visited a doctor for chest symptoms, but a diagnosis of asthma had been offered to the parents of only 21 children, including three of the 56 children experiencing four to 12 wheezy episodes a year and 11 of the 31 children experiencing more than 12 episodes a year. Bronchodilator treatment was rarely offered in the absence of such a diagnosis, and two thirds of the children had never received a bronchodilator. Of the children experiencing four or more episodes a year, only a third had received bronchodilator drugs regularly, though half had lost more than 50 days from school because of wheeze. School absenteeism fell 10-fold in the 31 children finally offered continuous prophylactic treatment. Although many doctors had feared that use of the word asthma would cause anxiety, parents were uniformly relieved when given an explanation of their childs ...

I did not receive an absentee ballot for the recent revote of the school vote. Apparently none were sent? Or did you receive one and mine was omitted? I prefer to vote at home. I signed the paper for absentee ballots. The Secretary of state said it is up to me to enforce the election rules. It is up to me to ask the town clerk to explain, go to court if need be. No, my body cannot take any more of that. My vote was not counted. If you like that policy, carry on. Just dont presume to know all the reasons I do not want to vote out in public. Background Alcohol use is a global health issue and may influence activity performance in a variety of domains, including the occupational and domestic spheres. The aim of the study was to examine the influence of annual drinking frequency and binge drinking (≥6 units at one occasion) on activity impairments both at work (sickness presenteeism) and outside the workplace. Methods Employees (n = 3278), recruited from 14 Norwegian private and public companies, responded to a questionnaire containing questions from the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Workplace Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire (WPAI). Results Multiple hierarchical regression analyses revealed that binge drinking was associated with both sickness presenteeism and impaired daily activities, even after controlling for gender, age, educational level, living status and employment sector. Annual drinking frequency was associated with impaired daily activities, but not sickness presenteeism.
Purpose The aim of the study was to investigate sickness absence due to mental disorders in human service occupations. Methods Participants (n = 1,466,100) were randomly selected from two consecutive national 9-year cohorts from the Statistics Finland population database; each cohort represented a 33% sample of the Finnish population aged 25-54 years. These data were linked to diagnosis-specific records on receipt of sickness allowance, drawn from a national register maintained by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland, using personal identification numbers. Results Sociodemographic-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for sickness absence due to mental disorders in all human service occupations combined were 1.76 for men (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.70-1.84) and 1.36 for women (95% CI, 1.34-1.38) compared with men and women in all other occupations, respectively. Of the 15 specific human service occupations, compared with occupations from the same skill/education level without a significant
This paper addresses two frequent overgeneralisations in the orphanhood literature in Africa: about the vulnerability of children and about orphans. It specifically examines school attendance, given the common presumption that orphans are less likely to attend school than non-orphans. Using survey data from two regions in Tanzania, analysis by primary school attendance categories (regular attenders, irregular attenders, dropouts, never attenders) shows that orphans should not be compared only with non-orphans since there are other vulnerable groups of children, all with different levels of social and spatial disadvantage. Both orphans and a second large and potentially vulnerable group of children, children who have not lost a parent, but who live with only one or neither of their parents, are less likely than other children to attend school in urban and roadside settlements, but there is no clear relationship for rural areas between vulnerable groups and attendance and dropout. ...
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the joint association of multimorbidity and work ability with the risk of long-term sickness absence (LTSA) in the general working population. Methods: Cox regression analysis censoring for competing events (statutory retirement, early retirement, disability pension, immigration, or death) was performed to estimate the joint association of chronic diseases and work ability in relation to physical and mental demands of the job with the prospective risk for LTSA (defined as ≥6 consecutive weeks during 2-year follow-up) among 10 427 wage earners from the general working population (2010 Danish Work Environment Cohort Study). Control variables were age, gender, psychosocial work environment, smoking, leisure physical activity, body mass index, job group, and previous LTSA. Results: Of the 10 427 respondents, 56.8% had experienced ≥1 chronic disease at baseline. The fully adjusted model showed an association between number of chronic diseases and ...
Few have investigated how the organisational culture-that is, the behavioural and attitudinal characteristics of the people in the organisation,58 is related to sickness absence. In the present study, perceived lack of encouraging and supportive culture in the work unit was the most important work factor, in terms of predicting sickness absence. In addition, sickness absence was lower in cultures that were perceived as suspicious. The associations showed threshold effects; step by step dose-response relations were not observed. The association between perceived suspicious organisational culture and low rates of sickness absence may be due to varying levels of social control in different workplaces, but the association was weak and should be interpreted with caution.. Low social support at work, albeit not as a characteristic of the organisational culture, has been found to predict sickness absence in civil servants,6,8 municipal employees,14 industrial employees,17 and transit operators.22 In a ...
Allow absentee ballot drop boxes. We cannot overstate the devastating consequences if the state of South Carolina does not plan now for the November election, wrote Katy Smith, the groups president and Isaac Cramer, chairman of the legislative committee. The purpose of this study was to determine risk factors for the occurrence of sickness absence due to low back pain (LBP) and to evaluate prognostic factors for return to work. A longitudinal study with 1-year follow-up was conducted among 853 shipyard workers. The cohort was drawn around January 2004 among employees in the shipyard industry. Baseline information was obtained by questionnaire on physical and psychosocial work load, need for recovery, perceived general health, musculoskeletal complaints, sickness absence, and health care use during the past year. During the 1-year follow-up for each subject medical certifications were retrieved for information on the frequency and duration of spells of sickness absence and associated diagnoses. Cox regression analyses were conducted on occurrence and on duration of sickness absence with hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) as measure of association. During the 1-year follow-up period, 14% of the population was on sick leave at ...
Greater communication between school nurses and families on how to manage asthma could help reduce the number of school absences for children afflicted with the chronic disease, according to preliminary data from an ongoing study in Hartford.
Asthma is a chronic lung disease caused by airway inflammation. Asthma is the most common pediatric chronic disease [1, 2] affecting 7.1 million (9.6 %) of American children [3, 4]. Asthma is the primary diagnosis for 1/3 of pediatric emergency department visits [5], and the most frequent reason for preventable pediatric hospitalization [6] and school absenteeism due to chronic conditions [7]. In 2008, 9.3 billion dollars, or 8 % of the total direct healthcare cost for all children, were spent on pediatric asthma [1].. About 80 % of pediatric asthma patients have symptom onset before age six [8, 9], most of them before age three [10-12]. However, only about 1/3 of children with at least one episode of asthmatic symptoms by age three will have asthma at age six and over [10, 13-18]. Asthma is under-diagnosed in 18-75 % of asthmatic children [19-23]. Overdiagnosis of asthma is also prevalent. Eleven percent of patients in primary care using inhaled corticosteroids, the most potent and consistently ...
May 6, 2008 - Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that makes airways (bronchial tubes) particularly sensitive to irritants, and this is characterized by difficulty in breathing. Globally, the prevalence of asthma continues to escalate with more than 300 million sufferers around the world. In many countries the annual asthma death toll rises year in, year out. In the United States, an estimated 23.2 million people currently suffer from asthma, almost 9 million of whom are under the age of 18 - thats 12 percent of all children. Asthma is the leading chronic illness of children in the United States and the leading cause of school absenteeism due to chronic illness. It causes almost 500,000 hospitalizations and about 5,000 deaths annually. Asthma affects people of all ages, it often starts in childhood and is more common in children than adults. More boys have asthma than girls, but in adulthood, more women have asthma than men. Although asthma is a problem among all races, blacks have more ...

Objectives This article investigates various reasons for sickness presenteeism (SP), that is, going to work despite illness. The research questions asked is: What are the main reported reasons for SP in Norway and Sweden? Design Cross-sectional survey in Norway and Sweden. Use of binomial logistic regression analysis. Participants A random sample of people aged between 20 and 60years was obtained from complete and updated databases of the Norwegian and Swedish populations. A postal questionnaire was sent to the selected individuals, with response rate 33% (n=2843). 2533 workers responded to questions about SP during the last 12months. Primary and secondary outcome measures The article informs about the distribution of reasons for SP in Norway and Sweden, selected by the respondents from a closed list. The article also examines which factors influence the most often reported reasons for SP. Results 56% of the Norwegian and Swedish respondents experienced SP in the previous year. The most ...
State Civil Services. The phrase State Services refers to the civil service at state level. Civil service refers to the civilians employed by a government and distinguishes civilian pursuits in government from military. Civil service is a career service. Elective officials and employees of semi-government bodies do not form part of the civil service. An essential ingredient of the civil service concept is merit system. Merit system means selection based on ability as adjudged by an open competitive examination for civil service jobs. An independent recruiting agency is the hallmark of a merit system. The state level recruiting agencies are designated as State Public Service Commission.. State public services are recruited by the respective state governments through their public service commissions or other agencies. Members of these services are primarily meant for service in the states; only occasionally may a few members of some of the state services be borrowed by the Centre or some other ...

ABSTRACT. Background: Botswana is regarded as a leader of progressive HIV/AIDS policy, as the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to establish a free, national antiretroviral therapy program. In light of such programmatic successes, it is important to evaluate the potentially changing relationship of HIV/AIDS to the wellbeing of individuals, households, and institutions in the country. Methods: We evaluate the effects of HIV-related illness on absenteeism and earnings several years after the start of the national treatment program among a random sample of adults in Botswana using survey data from 3999 individuals aged 15 to 49, using quasi-experimental methods. We compare absenteeism between individuals with and without HIV-related illness, using a propensity score matching approach. We then estimate the effect of HIV-related illness on earnings using a Heckman selection model to account for selection into the workforce. We stratify our analyses by sex. Results: Men and women with HIV-related ...

Results The socio-demographic characteristics of the control group were similar to those of the total patient population with psoriasis, although men were slightly over-represented in the latter group. The duration of disease and cutaneous and rheumatismal locations were in line with those usually found in the literature. The unemployment rate over the previous 5 years and number of days of medical leave over the previous 12 months was higher in the PsO+PsA group as compared to the control group (Table 1). In the sub-group reporting a flare-up at the time of the survey, the impact of the disease on absenteeism, presenteeism and productivity was significantly higher in PsO-ST and PsO+PsA patients (Figure 1). Despite this, PsO-ST and PsO+PsA patients reported greater attachment to their work than did those in the control group (Table 1). ...

© 2015 The Cochrane Collaboration. Background: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in young children account for 1.4 million deaths annually worldwide. Antibiotics could be beneficial in preventing LRTIs in high-risk children, and may also help prevent school absenteeism and work days missed by children and/or carers. While it is well documented that the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis for RTIs decreases over time, there are no reviews that describe the use of antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent LRTIs in high-risk children aged 12 years and under. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness and safety of antibiotic prophylaxis in the prevention of bacterial LRTIs in high-risk children aged 12 years and under. Search methods: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL 2015, Issue 1) and the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), MEDLINE and MEDLINE In-Process (OvidSP) (1946 to 13 February 2015), EMBASE (OvidSP) (1974 to 12 February 2015), Science Citation
Photo: Dr. Eduardo Villamor]. Dr. Eduardo Villamor and his team discovered that students deficient in vitamin B12 were at 2.4 times greater risk of repeating a grade and had 1.9 times more absences than those who were not deficient.. Vitamin B12 is necessary for adequate brain development, said Dr. Villamor, associate professor of epidemiology. Deficiency very early in life or in old age has been linked to cognitive and behavioral problems, but it was not known whether it could be related to academic difficulties during school age. Grade repetition and school absenteeism are important outcomes because they predict school dropout and impair childrens options for educational advancement and development.. As part of the Bogotá School Children cohort, a longitudinal investigation of nutrition and health in school children, the researchers took blood samples from 3,156 students ages 5-12 from public primary schools. They measured ferritin, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, zinc, vitamin A, ...

The conditions attached to a cash transfer, and the way in which it is supported by other school-based interventions, may affect the efficacy of the intervention. Some studies of economic incentives have made receipt of the cash incentive conditional on remaining free of sexually transmitted infections, rather than making a straightforward cash transfer.. A second school-based study from South Africa presented at IAS 2015 reported on the efficacy of a school-based educational intervention and cash incentives for achieving behavioural and educational outcomes. The CAPRISA 007 study recruited both young women and young men in Years Nine and Ten in 14 schools in the Vulindlela district of KwaZulu-Natal province. Schools were matched in pairs and randomised to receive either an educational intervention (My Life! My Future!) alone, or to receive the educational intervention and to receive cash incentives of up to R1750 over two years for fulfilling any combination of four conditions; annual HIV ...
Generally speaking, our club members do not camp for work days. It is typically just a daytrip. One errant cough or unexpected sneeze and the workplace becomes a veritable breeding ground of illness and resulting absenteeism. As the flu season approaches, HR managers prepare to deal with the headache of decreasing productivity. The World Health Organization estimates that the cost of influenza to the U.S. economy in terms of health care costs and lost productivity can range from $71 billion to $167 billion a year.. Going green may be all the rage in 2008, but in the form of cleaning, it has proven a significant means to ameliorate the negative effects of illness in the workplace. It is also an inexpensive, effective way to improve the overall health of a building.. Green cleaning provides demonstrable benefits to improved indoor environmental utility that directly relates to decreased absenteeism and increased productivity. As a tenant leasing space in a building, you want to lease space that will provide the healthiest possible environment for your occupants, said Keith Schneringer, ...
May 16, 2014. by David McDaid, Derek King and Michael Parsonage Substantial potential economic costs arise for employers from productivity losses due to depression and anxiety in the workforce. The main costs occur due to staff absenteeism and presenteeism (lost productivity while at work). From the perspective of the public purse, failure to intervene also risks higher future health and social care costs.. Labour Force Survey data suggest that 11.4 million working days were lost in Britain in 2008/09 due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety. This equates to 27.3 days lost per affected worker. It is estimated that the average annual cost of lost employment in England attributable to an employee with depression is £7,230, and £6,850 for anxiety (2005/06 prices). If these conditions are not treated, additional costs are also likely to arise from related physical health problems. In the longer term, wider costs may also be incurred, such as from acute care, the impact on family members ...

California and federal laws create numerous rules that provide employees the right to leaves of absence and time off from work. More than 20 statutes now govern the rules in this area and Governor Newsom has signed more time off bills into law. The evolution of these laws dramatically erodes the freedom employers formerly had to grant or deny time off requests. In many cases, several laws provide employees overlapping protections through a complicated system of rules.. In his new publication, Attorney Richard J. Simmons of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP examines the key statutory rules and the obligations they create. The publication provides charts showing the universe of laws providing time off rights and coverage standards. It also includes sample forms and checklists for reviewing leave requests.. Among the numerous topics addressed in the publication are the following:. ...
