Objective: To prospectively investigate whether sickness presenteeism (SP), ie, going to work despite illness, has an impact on future sickness absenteeism. Methods: Two study populations were used, one female dominated from the public sector that included 3757 employees, and one male dominated from the private sector comprising 2485 employees. Results: SP on more than five occasions during the baseline year (2000) was a statistically significant risk factor for future sick leave (2002 and 2003) of more than 30 days among both populations even after adjusting for previous sick leave, health status, demographics, lifestyle, and work-related variables (2002, public sector, relative risk = 1.40; private sector, relative risk = 1.51). Conclusions: SP may be an important phenomenon to consider when evaluating measures aimed at decreasing sickness absenteeism because more SP may lead to future sickness absence.. ...

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced Tuesday the availability of statewide chronic absenteeism data for the first time in California, providing a new understanding of absenteeism rates and enabling schools to see at a comprehensive level which students are missing school and in danger of falling behind.. This is a big step forward in efforts to provide useful information to schools, said Torlakson. This data helps us determine which schools, districts, and student groups have the largest concentration of chronic absences, allowing educators and community members to focus attention and resources and take actions needed to keep those students in class and back on the path to academic success.. The new chronic absenteeism data is available on the California Department of Education (CDE) DataQuest Web site. The reports indicate chronic absenteeism rates of schools and school districts and which student subgroups have the highest chronic absenteeism rates.. The way ...

Health related absenteeism was identified as a problem in the schools in the Molopo region, needing a multi-disciplinary approach which included the parents. A conceptual framework on absenteeism was used as a guideline for the descriptive research design. Using a convenience sampling technique 426 absentees, 22 teachers and 2 school nurses filled in three separate questionnaires in ten schools selected to determine the extent of absenteeism due to health related and other problems, the control measures taken and the awareness of school personnel. Health problems were identified as the main reasons for absenteeism. Inadequate communication between the schools and parents as well as lack of guidelines on the control of absenteeism, were other problems identified. Recommendations made related to the provision of school health services that promote the health status of the pupils based on Primary Health Care principles, parental involvement in school health matters and the formulation of policies ...
The objective of this study was to investigate prevalence and factors affecting sickness absenteeism among flower farm industry workers in Bishoftu town, Ethiopia. A workplace-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April 2018. A sample of 444 participants were included using a stratified sampling technique. We performed binary logistic regression analysis to identify factors associated with sickness absenteeism. The entire sampled workers (N = 444) were interviewed. Of the respondents, 55.6% (N = 247) were females. The mean age was 24.2 (SD ± 6.6) years. About 54.5% (N = 242) [95% CI (50.2, 59.0)] of the participants indicated that they had experienced sickness absence of at least 3 consecutive working days in the past 12 months. A total of 1357 days were lost with an average duration of 5.6 days per worker per year. Female sex [AOR: 2.63; 95% CI (1.723, 4.036)], sickness presenteeism [AOR: 3.15; 95% CI (2.026, 4.904)], job dissatisfaction [AOR: 1.60; 95% CI (1.047, 2.462)] and
An abnormality in absentee voting during Lowndes Countys November circuit court elections caught the eye of the secretary of states office.. Secretary of State Delbert Hosemanns 2010 Election Day Activity Report, released Tuesday, notes an unusually large number of absentee ballots witnessed by six individuals in Lowndes County for the General Election.. Of the 19,025 votes cast, 1,263 were absentee ballots. Of the absentee ballots, 350 were witnessed by the same six individuals. Mississippi law does not limit the number of absentee ballot envelopes any one individual may witness.. Hosemann said Wednesday hes drawing no conclusions from the unusually high number of ballots witnessed by the six individuals or the fact that the number of absentee ballots cast was approximately double the usual amount cast among a turnout of 19,000 voters. Nor does he believe the report will spur legislators to adjust voting statutes. Rather, he said the reports, which he initiated after his election, are ...

The emergency call from a Richmond hospital came to Neal Bailey while he was working at the Allied-Bendix Aerospace factory in McLean. His mothers kidney and heart problems had taken a bad turn, her doctor said, and Bailey was told hed better come quickly.. But when Bailey asked permission to go, his supervisor told him that if he left work he would be fired. He had already accumulated 7 1/2 points of absence occurrences under Allied-Bendixs new absenteeism policy, and if he was charged with another half point for leaving early, his eighth point would mean termination.. Most of Baileys fellow workers, angered by the threatened discharge, went on a spontaneous work stoppage, putting down their soldering tools and walking off the job in protest. Within 20 minutes, the plant manager told Bailey he could leave without penalty.. It was so wrong what they were doing to me . . . . Its run like a prison in here, said Bailey, 23, who had been suspended without pay for five days because of an ...
A survey of HR professionals conducted by law firm Eversheds shows swine flu is already within two-thirds of their organisations, and that most are increasing sanitation and putting in contingency plans for the expected autumn swine flu resurgence.. Eversheds survey of more than 420 HR professionals across the UK indicates the majority (72%) have already suffered absenteeism due to swine flu. The vast majority (87%) have introduced sanitation measures such as instigating extra cleaning and offering anti-bacterial products to workers. In addition, 86% are using some HR measures to protect their organisations, such as planning increasing provision for flexible/home-working and committing to spreading key worker skills and knowledge. Looking ahead, the findings reveal widespread concern over the potential future implications of employee absenteeism, with 38% of businesses believing they will lose revenue and 21% indicating they expect to have to close or part close premises. However, perhaps as a ...
Planning for 2009 H1N1 flu and the 2009-2010 flu season. Businesses should have an understanding of their normal seasonal absenteeism rates and know how to monitor their personnel for any unusual increases in absenteeism through the 2009-2010 flu season. Business continuity planners should assess their essential business functions now to determine at what threshold of absenteeism those functions would be threatened if absenteeism escalates. Planners can then prepare to take more aggressive measures to protect continuity as absenteeism escalates towards those thresholds.. All employers should be ready to implement strategies to protect their workforce from flu while ensuring continuity of operations. During a flu outbreak, all sick people should stay home and away from the workplace, respiratory etiquette and hand hygiene should be encouraged, and routine cleaning of commonly touched surfaces should be performed regularly. If the severity of illness increases, employers should be ready to ...
Employee absenteeism is a big problem for businesses small to large. When employees miss work, it can throw off productivity and the function of the entire workplace. Its expensive, and its becoming increasingly difficult for businesses to manage these costs.. Recently a study showed that unscheduled employee absenteeism has risen to some of the highest levels in nearly 20 years, but what can employers do?. Its easy to feel helpless as an employer, but there steps that can be taken to reduce and combat employees missing work.. Encourage Employees To Be Proactive with Their Health. Its going to be less expensive in the long-run to encourage your employees to be proactive with their healthcare, as opposed to having unhealthy employees that miss a lot of work.. A good way to help encourage your employees to be healthier without spending money is to enroll in a program like SingleCare. SingleCare is a prescription and healthcare discount program, and it costs employers nothing to participate. ...
BACKGROUND: Children with asthma experience more absenteeism from school compared with their nonasthma peers. Excessive absenteeism is related to lower student grades, psychological, social, and educational adjustment. Less is known about the relationship between the presence of asthma and the academic achievement in school-aged children. Since students with asthma miss more days from school, this may negatively impact their academic achievement. The goal of this study was to investigate the relationships between absenteeism, presence of asthma, and asthma severity level with standardized test level performance in a predominantly African American urban school district. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted of 3812 students (aged 8-17 years) who took the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) standardized test during the 2002-2003 academic year. RESULTS: After adjustment for covariates, a significant inverse relationship was found between absenteeism and test level performance on the MAP

Yet despite our inability to be precise about causal relationships between poor health and the academic achievement gap, the poorer health and access to care of African Americans certainly contributes to the gap. Children with more exposure to toxins (children with lead poisoning, for example) or more nutritional inadequacies (iron deficiency anemia, for example) have inferior cognitive ability lower IQs. Children with poorer vision cannot read as well; children less likely to be immunized and more likely to be ill have higher school absenteeism rates; children with more discomfort, from ear infections or toothaches, or with labored breathing from asthmatic attacks, are less able to pay attention to classroom lessons. Parents in poor health are less able to care for their children and less likely to guide their children to good health habits. Each of these average statistical health differences between black and white children and their parents may make a tiny contribution to the achievement ...

But new research on chronic absenteeism reveals a lot of surprising details can make a difference in whether students make it to class.
In the course of addressing the problem presented by asthma within the various school attendance programs, there are different stakeholders who are important to address. Some of the stakeholders include the education authorities, school staff, parents, students, and guardians. One of the greatest steps that were taken with regards to addressing the issue of asthma within the school setting is dealing with the various irritants and allergens. Working in collaboration with the Department of Education, the Department of Environmental Health instituted measures through which air quality in the various learning institutions was to be maintained at the required safety levels. This was instituted alongside strict measures to ensure that all types of mold within the classrooms were taken care of. Any substance that was bound to either pollute the air and or trigger an asthmatic attack was taken care of effectively. A year after these measures were instituted the number of children who missed school due ...

Well, for starters, I do think that the department has an obligation to help the students out, and at least present them with options. Thats what [institution A] did for me/my former lab, although it was actually a little circuitous. The whole debacle started when the lab started bouncing checks and the department not yet knowing about [the absentee PIs issues]. But, regardless, what they did do was offer us options, and temporary funding. To paraphrase, they basically said we know your lab is out of funds, and [absentee PI] has bounced during grant application season. The dept has funds and can float you to do what you need to do immediately, but this is obviously not a sustainable solution. You are strongly encouraged to seek other labs, because we cannot guarantee how long we are able to fund the lab, and we certainly cannot guarantee that [absentee PI] will have funds for future research. Honestly, I was doing mostly [non-laboratory research] at that time, so it didnt really affect me ...

This paper focuses on senior high school students and the ways that bullying affects their school attendance. Selected items from the 2008 Ghana Global School-based Student Health Survey are analysed first to explore the relationships between the duration and type of bullying and school attendance. Second, we investigate whether having emotional problems, in addition to being bullied, incrementally affects the relationship between bullying and school attendance. Third, we explore the mitigating influence of peer friendships on these relationships. In all cases we provide a gender analysis. The results show that bullying is associated with increased absenteeism for both boys and girls. The analysis of reported emotional problems, however, shows distinct gender differences. For boys, increases in emotional problems are not associated with increased absenteeism for those who are bullied. On the other hand, for girls emotional problems were strongly associated with absenteeism and more so for girls ...
Objectives Sickness absence is the outcome in many epidemiologic studies and is often based on summary measures such as the number of sickness absences per year. In this study the use of modern statistical methods was examined by making better use of the available information. Since sickness absence data deal with events occurring over time, the use of statistical models for survival data has been reviewed, and the use of frailty models has been proposed for the analysis of such data.. Methods Three methods for analyzing data on sickness absences were compared using a simulation study involving the following: (i) Poisson regression using a single outcome variable (number of sickness absences), (ii) analysis of time to first event using the Cox proportional hazards model, and (iii) frailty models, which are random effects proportional hazards models. Data from a study of the relation between the psychosocial work environment and sickness absence were used to illustrate the results.. Results ...

The Norwegian specialist health service has undergone many processes of reorganization during the last three decades. Changes are mainly initiated to increase the efficiency and quality of health care serving an ageing population under the condition of a diminishing labour supply. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of reorganization on long-term sickness absence among different levels of hospital staff. The study draws on panel data on employees of Norwegian public hospitals in 2005 and 2007 (N = 106,715). National register data on individual employees days of medically certified long-term (|16 days) sickness absence were linked with survey measures of actual reorganization executed at each hospital in each year. The surveys, answered by hospital administration staff, measured five types of reorganization: merging units, splitting up units, creating new units, shutting down units and reallocation of employees. The variation in sickness absence days was analysed using random and fixed
In the 2015-16 school year, nearly 102,000 students in Oregon - more than one in six children - were chronically absent from school. Nationally, Oregons chronic absenteeism rate consistently ranks within the bottom 20 percent of states. Chronic absenteeism in Oregon has a disproportionate impact on specific populations: Oregons American Indian and Alaska Native students, students with disabilities, students of color, students experiencing economic disadvantage and students who have received at least one out-of-school suspension ...
AIM: To examine if non-bullied employees at work units (WUs) with workplace bullying have more long-term sickness absence (LTSA) than employees in non-bullying WUs.. METHODS: We included 7229 public health employees from 302 WUs and 3158 responders to a questionnaire on working conditions and health in 2007. WUs were classified into three categories of WUs; 1) no bullying (0% bullied); 2) moderate prevalence of bullying (,10% bullied); and 3) high prevalence of bullying (≥10% bullied). LTSA (≥30 consecutive days of sickness absence) during the following two years was obtained by linkage to the Danish register of sickness absence compensation benefits and social transfer payments.. RESULTS: Non-bullied co-workers in WUs, where bullying was reported had 15 to 22% more LTSA compared with non-bullying WUs.. CONCLUSION: Workplace bullying may be associated with LTSA in the entire WU. ...

Work capacity correlates weakly to disease concepts, which in turn are insufficient to explain sick leave behavior. With data mainly from Sweden, a welfare state with high sickness absence rates, our aim was to develop an explanatory theory of how to understand and deal with work absence and sick leave. We used classic grounded theory for analyzing data from |130 interviews with people working or on sick leave, physicians, social security officers, and literature. Several hundreds of typed and handwritten memos were the basis for writing up the theory. In this paper we present a theory of work incentives and how to deal with work absence. We suggest that work disability can be seen as hurt work drivers or people caught in mode traps. Work drivers are specified as work capacities + work incentives, monetary and non-monetary. Also, people can get trapped in certain modes of behavior through changed capacities or incentives, or by inertia. Different modes have different drivers and these can trap the

Owner/managers of small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) are an under-researched population in terms of psychological distress and the associated health and economic consequences. Using baseline data from the evaluation of the Business in Mind program, a mental health promotion intervention amongst SME owner/managers, this study investigated: (i) prevalence of high/very high psychological distress, past-month sickness absenteeism and presenteeism days in SME owner/managers; (ii) associated, self-reported lost productivity; and (iii) associations between work, non-work and business-specific factors and work attendance behaviours. In our sample of 217 SME owner/managers 36.8% reported high/very high psychological distress. Of this group 38.7% reported past-month absenteeism, 82.5% reported past-month presenteeism, and those reporting presenteeism were 50% less productive as than usual. Negative binomial regression was used to demonstrate the independent effects of socio-demographic, work-related wellbeing
This study aimed to identify the psychosocial determinants that influence the duration of work disability among socially insured patients in Belgium. We found 14 psychosocial determinants that were significantly (p,0.10) related to the time until the end of the sick leave period. This model had a predictive value for long-term sickness absence (,6 months) of 80% (C-index), which indicates good to strong discriminative ability. The external validation of the model still indicated good discriminative ability (75%).. Most of our 14 factors are supported in the literature.12 We found 10 work related-factors; previous researchers have discussed physical work demands as a burden for returning to work.12-16 Den Boer et al also discussed job satisfaction in the case of work capacity at 6-month post-surgery.13 Kausto et al, Netterstrom and Marhold et al discussed the support by colleagues and by employers as important facilitators for returning to work.14 15 17 Meanwhile, Airaksinen did not find evidence ...

This thesis is a study on group differences in alcohol-related sickness absence. It consists of four papers: The first is an extensive review article of international research on the alcohol ?? sickness absence association. The second and third articles present studies of group differences in alcohol-related sickness absence in Norway. The fourth article is a study of group differences in attitudes towards alcohol-related sickness absence and presenteeism in Norway. Paper 1 is a review of the alcohol-absence association, to my knowledge the first review of studies on this topic. Following a literature search of peer reviewed journals, our inclusion criteria were met by 27 articles testing 48 associations. The study found that empirical evidence for an association between alcohol use and both long- and short-term absence was strong. All associations with a high quality score were statistically significant. The association did not vary systematically across measures of alcohol use. The association ...
In the second paper, we studied risk factors for long-term (> 8 weeks) sickness absence due to musculoskeletal disorders (LSM), focusing on the influence of the psychosocial and physical work environment, and a special aim was to reveal any gender differences in the associations. We found that men and women aged 40 and 45 had an LSM risk approximately 50% greater than that of subjects aged 30. There was a strong education gradient for both genders. Low job control had a strong effect, especially in men, whereas the effect of low job security was modest. Having shift/night work or rotating hours had a strong effect on the LSM risk, particularly in men. The associations with the job exposure variables were generally stronger for men; still, the LSM risk was considerably higher for women because of the high risk in women without the studied job exposures. Adding the interaction term (having both psychosocial end physical exposure) to the analysis did not significantly improve the model, and this ...

Whereas women in the 1970s and 1980s increased their overall burden by combining unpaid caregiving tasks on top of working life, the struggle for gender equality has clearly led to results, both at home and in the workplace. Today, mothers have access to considerable assistance in relation to childcare, and men have taken on more of the household chores. In addition, the availability of day-care and after-school programmes has improved dramatically. New technology has also made housework an easier task.. Nonetheless, the second-shift hypothesis, as it is often called, is still often invoked to explain why women in Norway have nearly 70 per cent higher sickness absence than men.. Our study has found no evidence to support the claim that the extra work children entail is the general cause of womens higher sickness absence. And viewed in isolation, we see that having a child in itself does not increase sickness absence among women.. ...
Downloadable! Using microdata on a sample of about 350 workers, employed at an Italian public institute, we explain individual absence rates both considering variables that may be related to health conditions and to variables that may suggest shirking behaviour. Among these variables we especially focus our attention on the influence produced by the behaviour of randomly assigned peers. To handle reflection problems we use the proportion of females in the peer group as instrument of peer absence behaviour. From Two-Stage least square estimates it emerges that social and group interactions play an important role in shaping individual absence behaviour.
Johnson reported that school absenteeism and visits to doctors office are increased for influenza-like illness as are prescriptions for anti-viral medication. Dr. Johnson said that complicating the picture is an increased incidence of strept throat and scarlet fever in Mammoth Lakes. He said that these infections can occur separately or together in the same person at the same time.. Mono County, said Johnson, has not seen an increase in EMS transports, Emergency Room visits or hospitalizations so far, but Northern Inyo Hospital has seen an increase in Emergency Room visits and hospitalizations.. On the wider scene, in the US, 22 children died last week alone from H1N1 infections. This brings the total so far to 114 children. Previously, according to Dr. Johnson, no more than 153 children have died in any one flu season. 28 pregnant women have died from H1N1 so far. Unprecedented for this time of year is the news that 48 states are reporting widespread activity.. Very little H1N1 vaccine has ...
A total of 179 Tyneside children who had suffered at least one episode of wheeze since school entry were seen at the age of 7. All but 14 had visited a doctor for chest symptoms, but a diagnosis of asthma had been offered to the parents of only 21 children, including three of the 56 children experiencing four to 12 wheezy episodes a year and 11 of the 31 children experiencing more than 12 episodes a year. Bronchodilator treatment was rarely offered in the absence of such a diagnosis, and two thirds of the children had never received a bronchodilator. Of the children experiencing four or more episodes a year, only a third had received bronchodilator drugs regularly, though half had lost more than 50 days from school because of wheeze. School absenteeism fell 10-fold in the 31 children finally offered continuous prophylactic treatment. Although many doctors had feared that use of the word asthma would cause anxiety, parents were uniformly relieved when given an explanation of their childs ...
