An abortifacient ("that which will cause a miscarriage" from Latin: abortus "miscarriage" and faciens "making") is a substance that induces abortion. Abortifacients for animals that have mated undesirably are known as mismating shots. Common abortifacients used in performing medical abortions include mifepristone, which is typically used in conjunction with misoprostol in a two-step approach. Oxytocin is commonly used to induce abortion in the second or third trimester. There are also several herbal mixtures with abortifacient claims, though there are no available data on the efficacy of these plants in humans. Prostaglandin analogues, such as misoprostol or gemeprost (both synthetic prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) analogues), are often used to terminate pregnancy up to 24 or 60 days of gestation, in combination with mifepristone (a progesterone receptor antagonist) or methotrexate (an antifolate). Misoprostol administered vaginally is more effective than when administered orally. Misoprostol is ...
The major issue concerns when a new living human being [normally] begins to exist. Scientifically, there is no question whatsoever that [in sexual reproduction]this occurs at fertilization -- in vivo, or in vitro. By the time of implantation, the living human embryo is approximately already 5-7 days old. This is not a religious, prolife, or subjective belief or opinion, but rather it is an objective scientific fact that has been known scientifically for over a hundred years, e.g., with the publication of Wilhelm His (the Father of Human Embryology), Anatomie menschlicher Embryonen (Leipzig: Vogel, 1880-1885). If break-through ovulation has taken place, and if fertilization has taken place, then several chemical effects due to Levonorgestrels mechanisms of action after that point could constitute abortion.
Clinical use of RU 486: control of the menstrual cycle and effect on the hypophyseal-adrenal axis].. Science.gov (United States). Gaillard, R C; Herrmann, W. 1983-01-01. RU 486 is a synthetic 19 norsteroid with a great affinity for progesterone and glucocorticosteroid receptors. The antiprogesterone activity of RU 486 permits interruption of the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and of early pregnancy, while the antiglucocorticosteroid activity interrupts the feedback mechanisms of cortisol at the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. 11 women aged 18-34 years who were 6-8 weeks pregnant were given daily doses of 200 mg of sensation of lipothymia. Blood pressure and laboratory test results remained normal. The daily increase of beta human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and progesterone was stopped by the antiprogesterone. It has been demonstrated in vitro that RU 486 inhibits secretion of beta HCG by cells of trophoblastic origin. 2 weeks after expulsion of the products of conception, the blood levels of ...

Those rights are enshrined in the Health and Disability Act 2000. The rights are, Right 6, Right to be fully informed. Right 7,the Right to Make an Informed Choice and Give Informed Consent. An estimated 40,000 women in New Zealand have had the Long Acting Reversible Contraceptive [LARC] Jadelle implants inserted into their arms since the implants were fully funded by the government in 2010. Many of these women did so in the belief that the implants were solely a contraceptive. They have been cruelly and deliberately deceived for the implant is not only a contraceptive but is also an abortifacient, that is, that it not only prevents new life but it destroys new life. The principal method of abortifacient birth control is the Pill, which first became widely used in the late 1960s and helped fuel the Sexual Revolution. Here are 5 things you should know about birth control pills.

Janet Morana, Associate Director, Priests for Life I was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1952 and grew up educated in Catholic schools. I am the oldest of four children with 14 years separating the oldest to youngest in my family. I graduated college in 1974 and married in 1975. It was a time when my Catholic faith no longer seemed to make sense to me and I gradually drifted away and became a non-practicing Catholic. At the same time all my close friends were getting married and so marriage seemed like the next step to take or so I thought.. I became engaged after dating my future husband for three months. From there things snowballed towards our wedding day real fast. At Pre-Cana classes the priest told us that if there were a really good reason to delay starting a family then birth control pills were an option we could consider. What I didnt realize was that this was bad advice both theologically, ...
What is medication abortion?. Medication abortion, also called the abortion pill, is actually a combination of two drugs: Mifeprex and and Misoprostol. When taken together as directed, these two medications will terminate a pregnancy and cause the body to expel it. Its a method of abortion for women in their first ten weeks of pregnancy. Another method of abortion available during the first trimester is aspiration abortion, which is also called surgical abortion.. How does medication abortion work?. Medication abortion works through a combination of two drugs: Mifeprex and Misoprostol. Mifeprex blocks the hormone progesterone, which plays an essential role in maintaining and supporting a pregnancy. When progesterone is blocked, the pregnancy will stop growing. Misoprostol is a drug that causes the uterus to contract, helping the body to expel the pregnancy.. Is medication abortion safe?. Both Mifeprex and Misoprostol are very safe, and have been used by thousands of women to end early ...
Abortion in Japan is available to women in limited circumstances, including endangerment of their health or economic hardship. Chapter XXIX of the Penal Code of Japan makes abortion de jure illegal in the country, but exceptions to the law are broad enough that it is widely accepted and practiced. Meanwhile, the Maternal Health Protection Law allows approved doctors to practice abortion with the consent of the mother and her spouse, if the pregnancy has resulted from rape, or if the continuation of the pregnancy may severely endanger the maternal health because of physical reasons or economic reasons. Anyone trying to practice abortion without the consent of the woman will be punished, including the doctors. No abortifacient has been approved in Japan. Approved doctors, however, can choose to use imported abortifacient under the same terms above. Any other people who abort the fetus using abortifacient will be punished. Emergency contraceptive pills were approved by the Ministry of Health, ...
Contraception is the term used to describe an intentional prevention of the conception of a child. This term may also be used to describe the intentional prevention of pregnancy, which may be defined differently from conception. ==Synopsis== Opinions about contraception have varied in the Orthodox Church. There is complete unanimity that no form of contraception that is abortifacient is acceptable and there are definitive ecumenical canons that proscribe abortifacients. The Fathers of the Church, such as Ss. Athanasius the Great, John Chrysostom, Epiphanios, Jerome, Ambrose, Augustine of Hippo, Caesarious, Gregory the Great, Augustine of Canterbury and Maximos the Confessor, all explicitely condemned abortion as well as the use of abortifacients. However there are a range of opinions on the issue of non-abortifacient contraception. :1) There are those who hold the view that sex should only be for the purpose of procreation, and so even natural family planning would be prohibited. :2)There ...
Pregnancy status: Patients must be non-pregnant (due to teratogenic or abortifacient effects of paclitaxel) from 30 days prior to randomization until 30 days after the last dose of study drug. Women who are not post-menopausal ≥ 52 weeks or surgically sterilized (e.g., hysterectomy, bilateral oophorectomy, bilateral tubal ligation) are considered of childbearing potential. For women of childbearing potential (WOCBP), a serum pregnancy test (β-hCG) must be negative at Screening, and a urine pregnancy test must be negative prior to each dose of study drug ...
Question:. Given the information we now know about the relatively rare but real abortifacient effect of the birth control pill, do you believe it is a sin to use the pill for contraceptive purposes?. Response:. This question has, in recent times, become one of the most frequently asked of all the inquiries I receive. I must confess that, for some time, I have procrastinated in answering, at least in any public forum, this question. There are a couple of reasons for my hesitancy.. First, I did not feel qualified to be a definitive resource about this subject, since I have had no training or experience in the medical or pharmaceutical fields. Please understand, even now, as I tell you what I think about the use of the pill, that I may not use the exact terminology that a medical doctor would use. I answer in terms that I understand.. Second, I hesitated because there are two views that are poles apart in regard to this question, even among those who are recognized as leaders in the pro-life camp. ...

Background: Medical and surgical methods are available for abortions in both the first and second trimester. Aim: To review the evidence base and current recommendations for available methods of abortions in first and second trimesters. Methods: Extensive literature search and review of available guidelines were done. Results: In the first trimester, medical methods are recommended below 7 weeks gestation while vacuum aspiration is an appropriate method between 7 to 12 weeks gestation. In the second trimester, the three methods of abortion available are dilatation and evacuation, intrauterine instillation of abortifacients and administration of systemic abortifacients. Conclusion: The choice of techniques depends on many factors including uterine volume, operator experience, patient preference, medical history and indication for abortion.

At your first full visit, which will last about two hours, your provider will perform an ultrasound exam to ensure that you are no more than 10 weeks pregnant, and will review the medication abortion process with you. While at the Clinic, you will swallow a tablet of Mifeprex. Your provider will then send you home with 4 tablets of Misoprostol and instructions for the next step.. Between 24 and 48 hours after you took Mifeprex at the Clinic, youll take four pills of Misoprostol at home, and you should expect to have cramping and bleeding. For most women, the abortion will be complete within 24 hours after taking Misoprostol. Between 6 and 16 days after your first appointment, youll come back to the Clinic one more time, so your provider can make sure the abortion is complete.. For more information about medication abortion, please take a look at our FAQ.. The Connection between Contraception and Abortion. by JANET SMITH. EXCERPT. Many in the pro-life movement are reluctant to make a connection between contraception and abortion. They insist that these are two very different acts that there is all the difference in the world between contraception, which prevents a life from coming to be and abortion, which takes a life that has already begun. With some contraceptives there is not only a link with abortion there is an identity. Some contraceptives are abortifacients; they work by causing early term abortions. The IUD seems to prevent a fertilized egg a new little human being from implanting in the uterine wall. The pill does not always stop ovulation but sometimes prevents implantation of the growing embryo. And, of course, the new RU 486 pill works altogether by aborting a new fetus, a new baby. Although some in the pro-life movement occasional speak out against the contraceptives that are abortifacients most generally steer clear of the issue of ...
We have only one question for Rachel Held Evans on this point: What type of contraception are you referring to? Preventative or abortifacient? While there are many who oppose the usage of contraceptives on moral grounds, contraception is in a different camp than abortion because contraception is meant to prevent the conception of a human being, whereas abortifacients take the life of an unborn human being after it has begun. So even if someone has moral issues with contraception, we should not enforce that moral position in law. We should enforce the moral position that abortion is wrong and should be illegal in law because taking a life is still wrong, even if someone doesnt believe they are actually taking a life (by way of analogy, we should still make infanticide illegal even though there are those who believe infanticide is morally licit and may want to take the life of their infant under certain conditions). Such non-abortifacient contraceptive methods should be accessible and affordable. ...
On December 1, Clintons team replied with an article titled, "Ted Cruz says no ones trying to ban contraception. Here are 5 times Ted Cruz tried to ban contraception.". Note how both Cruz and Clinton rely on confusion about the terms at hand. Cruz says conservatives dont want to "ban contraceptives"-ignoring the fact that many conservatives want to ban abortifacients and consider the pill and IUD to be abortifacients. And Clinton misuses the term "contraception" to refer to all types of birth control.. Clinton also promotes the confusion between banning something and declining to subsidize it with tax dollars or otherwise promote it with government force. I agree with Cruz that people should not be forced to subsidize birth control and that government ought not interfere with freedom of contract (which can involve employment policies regarding birth control). Three of Clintons five points pertain not to proposed bans but to taxes and employment regulations.. Clintons fifth point claims that ...
Claveaus 28-page "Birth Control and Abortifacients begins with a detailed analysis of the various standard methods of contraception, noting their abortifacient action and harmful side effects on women. Claveau pays particular attention to the popular birth control pills that have been widely accepted, even by professedly "pro-life" women, as a means to reduce the sort of unwanted pregnancies that often end in abortion.. Birth control pills artificially flood a womans body with high levels of hormones in order to produce three main effects on her body: First, the hormones can suppress ovulation, thus preventing the formation of eggs. Second, the hormones can thicken the cervical mucus, thus preventing sperm from reaching the egg. Third, the hormones can alter the uterine lining, thus preventing the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus that provides the newly formed zygote with the oxygen and nutrients he needs to live.. Early birth control pills contained high levels of progestin and ...
If a woman on the pill has a breakthrough ovulation, the pill-caused changes in the endometrium will increase the chance of an unrecognized, pill-induced loss of a preborn human.. For those who believe that human life begins at fertilization, then any pill-caused post-fertilization loss of life would be, by definition, an abortifacient.. The second letter, from Guttmacher Institute ("RH research findings distorted," Inquirer, 7/1/11), claims that the "pill only serves to prevent a pregnancy; it does not terminate a pregnancy. It is blatantly false and against all scientific evidence to claim that the pill is an abortifacient.". This letter, purposefully we think, does not tell the readers that the Institute defines pregnancy as beginning at implantation, a full 5-7 days after fertilization, when the unborn human, now called a blastocyst (not a "fertilized egg"), is made up of roughly 100 or more cells.. Since the pill does not affect an unborn child after implantation and the Institute defines ...
Is there any new material addressing the scientific and ethical questions of the "morning after pill" and the whole abortifacient issue?. Randy Alcorn has a revised ProLife Answers to ProChoice Arguments as well as his book Why ProLife? published in 2004. He has taken great care to cite all original sources for his readers so that they may use the books not only for reading, but as reference tools. Randy is, as far as I know, the most synthesized writer on the topic. By that I mean that he has done an extraordinary analysis of the available evidence and has put it into a format that is accessible and comprehensible to the average reader.. But there are other good resources that you may wish to check out. One such resource is Pharmacists for Life (PFLI), an international group of pharmacists founded by Dr. B. Kuhar, who oppose filling prescriptions for exogenous hormonal "birth control"-the "pill" and other prescribed BC drugs with a known abortifacient affect. They are professionals who are ...

There are a number of abortion methods used depending upon the gestational age of the baby. The following information and videos have been re-published from Live Action.
The study analyzed the content of 1077 articles in 113 newspapers, from 1992 to 2002, discussing both ECPs and medical abortions (MTP). Of all articles, 44.5% (n=479) included more than one instance of confusion between ECPs and one of the drugs used for MTP, mifepristone. Inaccurate portrayal of ECPs mechanism of action as medical abortion was noted in 31.8% (n=343) of articles, and 13.1% (n=141) inappropriately applied terms such as "abortifacient post-coital contraceptives" for ECPs. ...
Surgical abortion is performed by appropriately licensed physicians to end unwanted pregnancies. These procedures are typically performed in the first trimester, however may be performed throughout the entire pregnancy certain circumstances. Several symptoms are common after surgical abortion.
These populations were having abortions, too. They patronized less skilled practitioners or tried to induce miscarriages themselves, using knitting needles, hairpins, and scissors. Others ingested folk remedies like slippery elm or the wide array of commercially available abortifacients, which were advertised to women who were Stomach Sick or had Missed Menses. Countless women died or suffered permanent injury, particularly in poor and minority communities.. A 1917 study in St. Louis found that half of white women who received an abortion were induced by a physician or midwife. Lacking access to these services, African-American women pinned their faith on drugs, as the study dryly noted. In the 1930s, Harlem Hospital opened a separate ward to treat the mostly black patients requiring emergency care after botched abortions.. Abortion laws would become even more restrictive in the 1950s, leading to another spike in injuries and deaths. In New York City, where the total number of ...

Cream had emigrated to Canada with his parents as a small child. Though he was set up to inherit his fathers lumber mill, he instead chose to become a physician. The first abortion attributed to him was in April of 1876, shortly after his graduation from medical school. The woman was Flora Elizabeth Brooks, who evidently had been pregnant by Cream. An angry mob stormed the hotel where Flora had taken ill after the abortion, and to escape the wrath of the mob and the girls family, Cream married her. The next day he left for Edinburgh, Scotland, whence he sent his bride some abortifacients, and settled down to study midwifery (obstetrics). Flora died, reportedly from consumption, shortly thereafter. Cream then returned to Canada, and faced another scandal when a young woman, Kate Gardener, was found dead of an overdose of chloroform -- a substance Cream had studied for his doctor thesis. Cream tried to claim that Kate had committed suicide with chloroform because hed refused to perform an ...
Liberals and conservatives sometimes spar over the definition of pregnancy. Some liberals define the term as meaning the period from implantation of an embryo in a mothers womb forward. Conservatives often define it as beginning at the point of conception. Quite a lot can seem to depend on the definition, since it can seem natural to think that a contraceptive, for example, works by preventing pregnancy, and an abortion by disrupting it. Thus, if pregnancy is not initiated until implantation, and an abortion disrupts pregnancy, then drugs that prevent implantation would be considered contraceptive, and not abortifacient. Conservatives rightly resist this claim, and do so by contesting the meaning of pregnancy.. But a better strategy might be to accept the liberal definition of pregnancy, but reject the conclusions that purportedly follow from it. On three issues-contraception, abortion, and embryo-adoption-Ill argue that the liberal definition of pregnancy can actually help clarify what sound ...
Two years ago, a letter was sent to every US bishop with the latest research findings on Plan B, Dr. Kahlenborn said, ". . . and I didnt hear from anybody. I was frustrated. Whats wrong? Whats the problem? Are they just all afraid?". Planned Parenthood and other womens abortion centers dispense Plan B at no cost and encourage women to "have some on hand in case you need it." The Catholic Health Association, which has taken positions contrary to Church teaching on issues such as the Health and Human Services mandate on contraception coverage in Obamacare health insurance plans has stated that it does not consider Plan B an abortifacient but emergency contraception.. "Plan B should be challenged, especially given the pro-life stance of the current administration, since abortion pills should not be sold over the counter to anyone, especially teenagers," Dr. Kahlenborn said.. Dr. Kahlenborn remains convinced that the influential National Catholic Bioethics Center based in Philadelphia has the ...

In 1889, Delia Mae Bell, age 14, lived with her mother, Mrs. McDermott, in Birmingham, Alabama and worked in her mothers dressmaking shop. When Delia took violently ill on a Sunday morning, the neighbors were suspicious. The first doctor called to the scene was L.G. Woodson. He arrived about 6:30 and found Delia in convulsions. He gave her a subcutaneous morphine injection then went to breakfast. When he returned, he found her once again convulsing, so he sent for Dr. W.C. Foster. He took note of the convulsions, and of a suspicious bottle. He called in yet another physician, Dr. W.E. Morris. "All the aids known to medical science were tried without avail, and about 3 oclock in the afternoon it was decided to resort to an operation." Later, Morris said, "There were hurrying feet in the hallways, and then came a hush over the place. The girl was dead." This was Monday, March 25, 1889. The doctors notified the coroner and turned over a bottle to him that had contained an abortifacient traced to ...

Q. So how do you prove that the pill acts as an abortifacient?. A. The answer to this question can be found by comparing the rate of break-through ovulation and the detected pregnancy rate. The ovulation rate has been reported to be about 27 ovulations in 100 women using the pill for one year. But the detected pregnancy rate is much lower at around 4 pregnancies per 100 women using the pill for one year.. As you can see, there is a big difference between the number of women who ovulation (27) and the number of detected pregnancies (4). What has happened within the woman s body to reduce the high ovulation rate to such a low number of detected pregnancies? I suggest that one answer to this important question is that pregnancies have begun, because ovulation and fertilization have occurred, but some of these pregnancies are terminated because implantation cannot take place. The pill has damaged the lining of the womb, stopping implanation.. Q. You talk about the pill causing damage to the lining ...
Sincerely yours, John O. Agwunobi, Assistant Secretary for Health (Bush Supports Contraception Letter) Contraception, of course, of its very evil nature, over and above the fact that most contraceptives serve as abortifacients that kill babies chemically or act to expel fertilized human beings from implanting in the uterus, is denial of the Sovereignty of God over the sanctity and fecundity of marriage.. 6) George Walker Bush made announced at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2001, that he was going to permitted the use of Federal taxpayer dollars to fund embryonic stem cell research on embryonic human beings whose "lines" were created before the time of his announcement. In so doing, of course, Bush authorized the death of those human beings and at the same time justify the immoral, evil practice of in vitro fertilization while doing nothing to stop the privately funded death and destruction of such embryonic human beings on those "lines" created after the date and time of his ...
On the day we talked about contraception, the second professor started by saying, "So its clear where the tradition stands on contraception. But I think its ok." When the few Catholic students in the class and I asked her why, she said, "I dont have a theological reason why, I just dont think theres anything wrong with it from my experience." She said she was concerned that the Pill was sometimes abortifacient and so was against its use, but she recommended the use of barrier methods. She said she thought sex did have the dual purpose of unity of the couple and the procreation of children, but that the procreative aspect didnt have to be present every time. I pointed out that any barrier method would be putting a physical separation between the spouses and thus disrupting the unitive aspect as well (its called the "barrier" method after all). Since throughout the course she had repeatedly said that we needed to take our human physicality seriously in our theology, I thought this would be ...
We are a group of friends, all pro-lifers. Some of us are private medical practitioners-all faceless supporters of the stand of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) against artificial contraception. We would like to express our support to the CBCP not by starting another debate but by enlightening readers and, we hope, our legislators as well, regarding this hot topic, from a theoretical standpoint.. Oral contraceptives (more commonly known as pills), hormonal injectables and Intra-Uterine Devices (IUDs) are all artificial contraceptives. Unfortunately, most people are not aware that they are, indeed, abortifacient. A review of the various literatures on these contraceptives will show that each of them has an efficacy rate that is less than 100 percent because fertilization (the meeting of egg cell and sperm cell, which leads to the conceptus) is not absolutely prevented.. For instance, the IUD does not prevent ovulation and so fertilization may occur several times in the ...

OCLC 781956734.p.150: Mechanism of action Although the precise mechanism of action is not known, currently available IUCs work primarily by preventing sperm from fertilizing ova.26 IUCs are not abortifacients: they do not interrupt an implanted pregnancy.27 Pregnancy is prevented by a combination of the "foreign body effect" of the plastic or metal frame and the specific action of the medication (copper or levonorgestrel) that is released. Exposure to a foreign body causes a sterile inflammatory reaction in the intrauterine environment that is toxic to sperm and ova and impairs implantation.28,29 The production of cytotoxic peptides and activation of enzymes lead to inhibition of ...
I live in Texas and have followed this closely as I am also a pro-life activist. The so-called Womens Health Program is nothing more than a subsidized "family planning exam" once per year for women so they will receive contraceptives and not have babies on Medicaid. I encourage everyone to read - from the states own website - what this program is and is not. It is not comprehensive healthcare and is extremely limited in what it does. Scroll down to "Covered Services" and read carefully: http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/help/WHP/index.shtml. It is above all a means to provide low-income women with contraceptives, some of which are abortifacient and/or carcinogenic. The "screenings" this "family planning exam" "might" include are limited, if they are offered at all. NOTE: It does not say they have to be done. Nor does the PAP smear have to be done. They merely "might" be done. Most of these screenings are the kind that would be done to see if a particular contraceptive is contraindicated due to some ...
It is not discrimination for the employer not to provide certain items in a health insurance policy. Employers, at least until now, didnt have to offer health insurance at all. If they do offer it, they offered what they could afford or what they chose to offer, and employees accepted it or didnt. Many many people work full time at jobs which offer no health insurance. A large part of the time I was raising my children, my husband worked full time at such jobs. So if an employer is offering a good insurance policy which doesnt happen to cover items which are purely voluntary and not necessary medical care such as contraception, abortifacient medications, and sterilization, well, this is not discrimination. It just means that if you want to use those, you pay for them yourself. Most places which offer insurance also offer medical set aside plans where you can put part of your money away pretax and then use it for unreimbursed medical expenses such as more expensive glasses frames than your ...
