This thesis is dedicated to implementing wavefront analysis for studying the peripheral optics of the human eye with an emphasis on its relation to myopia. The aim is to find properties in the peripheral image quality. The work consists of the following main parts: • Literature review and analysis of population data on ocular aberrations of the relaxed eye over the horizontal visual field (Paper B). This paper recommends a method for the peripheral wavefront analysis and presents data for different groups of people: (a) population average, (b) myopic, and (c) emmetropic subjects. • Development of a novel, dual-angle, open field wavefront sensor (Paper D). The device enables recording of real-time, simultaneous fovealperipheral wavefront measurements, while providing a binocular open field of view. • Studying optical quality for myopic and emmetropic subjects under different accommodation demands (Paper F). The novelty of this work is the real-time accommodation state tracking, allowing a ...
Figure 4 shows some mean higher-order aberration coefficients, higher-order root-mean-squared aberrations (HORMS) and total RMS aberrations excluding defocus (total RMS) for the two groups across the visual field. Other higher-order coefficients are not shown, as they had little or no regular pattern across the visual field and were small in magnitude. For each refractive group, oblique trefoil C 3 −3 decreased from the top to the bottom of the field (Aa, Ba). It was more negative, or less positive, for the myopic group than for the emmetropic group (Aa, Ba). The most prominent differences between the two groups were seen in the vertical C 3 −1 (Ab, Bb) and horizontal C 3 1 coma (Ac, Bc) coefficients, both of which tended to be relatively large in comparison to the other higher-order coefficients. Vertical coma C 3 −1 increased linearly from the superior to the inferior visual field and horizontal coma C 3 1 increased from the nasal to the temporal visual field. Emmetropes had slightly ...
DISCUSSION. Over the last few years, the impact of higher order aberrations on visual development and emmetropization has been the source of much debate. Brunette et al. described significant levels of higher order aberrations in children, but these higher order aberrations tended to decrease with growth, possibly as part of emmetropization(8). Studies have shown that lower order aberrations are responsible for about 90% of the quality of retinal images and that the remaining 10% is a combination of the effects of various higher order aberrations(9). However, higher order aberrations do not interact with each other in a linear algebraic manner(10,11); in fact, the effects of the different aberrations tend to compensate for each other(4,12). According to the work of Kelly et al., corneal optical aberrations are often compensated by internal ocular aberrations; therefore, the measurement of corneal wavefront aberrometry alone may produce inaccurate information about the retinal image quality(12). ...

PURPOSE: To manufacture and test a set of phase plates for the calibration of ocular aberrometers and apply it to the calibration of an ocular laser ray tracing aberrometer. METHODS: The set of phase plates is made by a greyscale single-mask photosculpture in photoresist method. Each plate induces a given amount of a particular aberration (Zernike) mode. The set contains two subsets: 1) pure Zernike modes to test the accuracy among different orders (from 3rd to 7th, approximately 0.3 to 0.4 μm); and 2) plates having different amounts of the same mode, 3rd order coma ranging from 0.11 to 0.47 μm. After manufacturing, the plates were tested twice, as a crosscheck, measuring the aberration pattern of each plate with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a single-pass Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor. The set was then applied to the calibration of an ocular double-pass laser ray tracing aberrometer. RESULTS: Close agreement was found between the three types of measurement. The maximum difference ...
Aberrant activity of the MAP and PI3 kinases is implicated in many forms of cancer. The ability to gather quantifiable information on the activation state of these kinases from limited in-vitro and in-vivo tumor samples would accelerate drug development and ultimately, the treatment of cancer. In this BioScale poster, presented at ELRIG Drug Discovery 2012, non-optical acoustic membrane microparticle (AMMP®) technology was used to quantitate the activity state of multiple kinases including EGFR,

However, as the eye ages from the young adulthood (20-30 years) to the elderly (60-80 years) it becomes more aberrated on average. In particular, the spherical aberration (SA) of the eye tends to increase in older eyes. Similarly, a significant increment of horizontal coma and other third-order aberrations has been reported. In a previous work (Artal et al., 2002), we showed that a progressive disruption of the corneal-internal aberrations balance was the primary source of increment of ocular aberrations in older eyes. However, the underlying causes of this mechanism remain unclear. To answer the question, it is necessary to improve our understanding about how ocular aberrations are generated and how the compensation mechanism works. Ocular aberrations may have an intrinsic origin related to the shape of the surfaces or the profile of the refractive index, or an angular origin associated with the alignment of the optical components. The combination of intrinsic factors makes the cornea of a ...

Real-time quality metrics provide much-needed visibility into quality issues and help prevent future adverse occurrences. These measurements are an effective way of introducing transparency and accountability into an organization. With consistent performance metrics in place, executives can get the insight needed to make educated decisions and gain better control over the manufacturing process.. Establishing some key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure your quality is on track is considered best practice. KPIs are a reliable way to track manufacturing performance and identify areas for improvement.. Establishing standards for the following can help you achieve your quality goals. Lets examine a few examples of quality metrics to understand how they can deliver intelligence to support your quality assurance efforts:. First Pass Yield (FPY ...

In summary, we report a novel spectrometer design in combination with a cylindrically convex pre-mirror and a cylindrically concave VLS grating (both in the meridional). The design could not only provide a decent flat-field at the detector domain but also enhance the resolving power substantially. Our main findings in the current research are: (1) If a convex mirror is inserted in between the light source and the grating to create a reduced virtual image (acting as a secondary real source point for the grating), the resolution of the system would be enhanced. (2) Generally, if a pre-mirror (convex or concave) is inserted upstream of the grating, its optical aberration should be included and justified (e.g. the magnification, creating a real or virtual image), in order to calculate and compensate the overall aberration of the system accurately. (3) A realistic optical system always possesses errors, e.g. optical aberrations and fabrication errors, thus the beam spectral distribution would be ...

Purpose: To correlate subjective visual performance responses with through-focus retinal image quality (RIQ) metrics obtained on presbyopic participants fitted with single vision (SV) and multifocal (MF) contact lenses.. Methods: Thirteen presbyopic participants (50.2 ± 3.5 years, SE: +1.38 to -5.50D) who needed adds of +1.00 or +1.25D were fitted bilaterally with AirOptix Aqua™ SV and AirOptix Aqua™ MF lenses [Alcon, USA]. Using the EyeMapper, a global aberrometer, on-axis ocular wavefront aberration profiles with lenses were captured. Five independent repeats were performed under natural pupils. Additionally, participants pupil sizes were measured at different illumination conditions (scotopic (0 Lux), mesopic (80 Lux) and photopic (300 Lux)) using a custom-built instrument. Post-processing routines in Matlab using the 6th order Zernike polynomial (z1 to z28) obtained from the EyeMapper yielded through-focus retinal image quality metrics (visual Strehl Ratio in the Fourier domain) over ...

The aim of this study was to use a Shack-Hartmann clinical aberrometer (COAS, Wavefront Sciences Ltd) to evaluate the variability of low- and higher-order aberration measurement of the eye. Using the wave aberration polynomial determined for a full-size pupil we compared the Zernike expansion coefficients for a smaller, 3 mm pupil derived by two methods: first, by re-calculating the wave aberration coefficients to the reduced sampled points corresponding to that pupil (direct method), and, second, by using a matrix method to reconstruct a new set of coefficients appropriate for the reduced pupil (scaling method) (see figure 1).. Our results suggest that, for full-size pupil, the efficiency of the measurements varies across x and y pupil position: where the wavefront is larger, measurement variance is higher, especially near the margins of the pupil, where increased standard deviation results to higher wave-aberration error. Some of this increased variance may have been due to poorer image ...
Hartmann-shack method is widely used in adaptive optics system for wavefront sensing. A data processing system is used in the sensor for computing wavefront gradient, wavefront reconstruction and control. To get a wide control bandwidth, the system speed should be high enough and the time delay should be as short as possible. In this paper, a multiprocessor system for a 37-element Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor (H-S WFS) is presented. The main computation is completed by 4 processing modules in parallel, and the data acquisition, processing and communication are conducted in pipeline. The system can process video signal at 380 frames/sec and the time delay is less than 1/8 of frame period ...
LASIK which is customised according to the patients own optical (eye) aberrations is called custom-vue LASIK or wavefront guided LASIK.. What are optical aberration?. Optical aberration are the natural defects in the refractive state/mechanism of the eye due to which the patient cannot focus and see objects clearly. There are different types of optical aberrations. Lower order aberrations are rectified in a normal LASIK but for significant higher order aberrations, wavefront guided LASIK is required.. What is done in custom-vue LASIK or wavefront guided LASIK?. Firstly, the patients eyes are scanned to find out its optical aberrations. Then, this data is fed into the LASIK machine, where the computer generates the laser for rectifying these errors, according to the individual optical aberrations, during LASIK surgery.. Do all cases require custom-vue LASIK or wavefront guided LASIK?. This depends upon the type of optical aberrations present in ones eye. For lower order aberrations normal ...
We studied the age dependence of the relative contributions of the aberrations of the cornea and the internal ocular surfaces to the total aberrations of the eye. We measured the wave-front aberration of the eye with a Hartmann-Shack sensor and the aberrations of the anterior corneal surface from the elevation data provided by a corneal topography system. The aberrations of the internal surfaces were obtained by direct subtraction of the ocular and corneal wave-front data. Measurements were obtained for normal healthy subjects with ages ranging from 20 to 70 years. The magnitude of the RMS wave-front aberration (excluding defocus and astigmatism) of the eye increases more than threefold within the age range considered. However, the aberrations of the anterior corneal surface increase only slightly with age. In most of the younger subjects, total ocular aberrations are lower than corneal aberrations, while in the older subjects the reverse condition occurs. Astigmatism, coma, and spherical ...
Based on a simple eye model system, a high resolution adaptive optics retina imaging system was built to demonstrate the availability of using liquid crystal devices as a wave-front corrector for both low and high order aberrations. Myopia glass was used to introduce large low order aberrations. A fiber bundle was used to simulate the retina. After correction, its image at different diopters became very clear. We can get a root mean square(RMS) correction precision of lower than 0.049λ (λ =0.63μm) for over to 10 diopters and the modulation transfer function (MTF) retains 51lp/mm, which is nearly the diffraction limited resolution for a 2.7mm pupil diameter. The closed loop bandwidth was nearly 4 Hz, which is capable to track most of the aberration dynamics in a real eye.. ©2007 Optical Society of America. Full Article , PDF Article ...
Figure 6 shows preoperative (white bars) and postoperative (black bars) values of the RMS spherical aberration, for a 6.5-mm pupil. It appears as positive in all cases, because it is given in terms of the RMS corresponding to Z 4 0 and Z 6 0 . 29 Eyes are sorted by increasing myopic spherical error, as in Figure 5 . There is a dramatic increase in spherical aberration after LASIK in all but three eyes (1, 10, and 11). The spherical-aberration RMS increase ranged from 0.002 to 0.97 μm. Table 1 , row 5, shows the average increase of spherical aberration (by a factor of 3.99) in this group of eyes, which is highly statistically significant (P , 0.0001). For a 3-mm pupil, the RMS corresponding to spherical aberration increases by a factor of 7.48 on average, and this increase is again significant (P = 0.002). The increase of 4th order aberration terms (Table 1 , row 3) is mostly due to the increase in spherical aberration. The fact that the asphericity of the cornea changes with surgery (from a ...
An aspect of the present invention relates to a method of manufacturing an eyeglass lens, which comprises a step of conducting polishing processing of a non-optical surface of a semifinished lens, one surface of which is an optical surface and the other surface of which is the non-optical surface, to create an optical surface. The semifinished lens comprises an acrylic coating on an optical surface of a lens substrate, a surface of the acrylic coating having a contact angle relative to water of equal to or less than 90.degree., prior to the polishing processing, a protective film is adhered through an adhesive layer of the film to the surface of the acrylic coating, and the polishing processing is conducted by polishing a non-optical surface of the lens substrate in a state where the protective film surface is secured in a block jig.
The Shack-Hartmann or Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensors are particular forms of the Hartmann sensor and are the most commonly used in adaptive optics. The traditional Hartmann screen in the pupil is replaced by an array of small lenslets at a conjugate to an image of the pupil or deformable mirror. Each lenslet forms an independent image of the incoming wavefront. Shifts in the positions of these images can be shown by simple geometric optics to be proportional to the mean wavefront gradient over each lenslet. The measurement range or dynamic range of a conventional Shack-Hartmann sensor is normally limited by the sub-aperture size of the detector plane, in which each spot should remain. In order to overcome this restriction, several methods, such as modified unwrapped algorithm or a spatial-light modulator as a shutter, have been proposed. We first simulated the image forming of a conventional Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor for highly aberrated spherical aberrations through computer simulation, ...
Forty eyes of 40 patients were divided into group A (K max up to 60D) and B (K max from 61 to 75D). Eyes were also divided into two sub-groups according to the corneal astigmatism (cutoff value of 5D). For aberrometric and kappa distance measurements, OPDScan III was used. P dist (kappa distance) was defined as distance between the first Purkinje image and the center of the photopic pupil. Aberrometry was extracted from the central 5mm zone. Correlation between the change of kappa distance with the change of spherical aberration was also done. Right and left eyes were analyzed separately ...

Non-optical devices and modifications do not use lenses to magnify images. Instead, they increase lighting levels, improve contrast, decrease the effects of glare, or increase print size to make objects and print more easily visible. Examples include high-intensity table or floor lamps, large print reading materials, electronic video magnifiers, and iPads and tablets. Absorptive lenses are sunglasses that filter out ultraviolet and infrared light, reduce glare, and increase contrast. Non-optical devices can also be used in combination with magnifiers and other low-vision optical devices.. Clocks and timers with large numerals, writing guides, needle threaders, large print or talking watches, large print and tactile labels, and talking pill bottles are examples of such equipment.. ...
What many experts are just now beginning to look at is the effects of different wireless systems on each other and how they mix and magnify each other. So if you have wifi on, that creates a very strong blanket signal which will then magnify the signals from other devices such as your computer, the mouse, cordless phones, cell phones, etc. You should also check to see if you are near any communications antennas, or cell towers... those can really amp up everything in your house. I used to be located within 200 feet of a major cell tower installation with more than 50 antennas on the roof of a nearby building, with a straight shot into my living room. I had no idea about any of this, but quickly got up to speed through research and talking to the nations 3 leading experts on EMF. I also discovered that my 4 close neighbors all recently put in wifi systems - all zapping my apartment. Within a few years of this daily exposure, I began to develop serious physical problems that continued to worsen ...

Every eye possesses a number of aberrations. However, in a KC patients eye, there are approximately five to six times the numbers of high-order aberrations (HOAs) than in a healthy eye. Using this technology to detect and assess the HOAs, it was found that in a KC cornea, it is possible to detect at a very early stage a much higher value of vertical coma aberrations compared with a normal eye. By using this technology, it is possible to study and understand the characteristics of the quality of the image on the retina, thereby understanding its impact on the patients visual quality ...
Digital reproductions of any size made from images scanned from film or taken by an electronic camera are optimally sharpened in a system-wide operation. The images are captured by an imaging device having an electronic imager and subsequently reproduced in a reproduction device, both imaging and reproduction devices having respective modulation transfer functions. Initially, the imaging device modulation transfer function and the reproduction device modulation transfer function are stored in separate devices. After an image is captured with the imaging device, a system modulation transfer function is generated from the imaging device modulation transfer function and the reproduction device modulation transfer function. Then a sharpening function is generated from the system modulation transfer function and the sharpening filter function is applied to the image captured by the imaging device in order to sharpen the image.

Lastly, Ill show you some transfocal bokeh images.. There are two important aspects to bokeh. It seems most people, when they hear the word, think immediately of the look of parts of the scene that are for out of focus. Thats a good thing to think about when buying, selecting, or using a lens, but the, ahem, focus, of todays post is going to be on another aspect of bokeh: the characteristics of the lens in reddering subjects that are nearly in focus. The way the lens handles the change from sharply in focus to definitely out of focus is important in the look that the camera and lens give to three-dimensional subjects closer than landscape distances.. The MTF Mapper returns information about the line spread function (LSF), which can be thought of as the radial component of the point spread function (PSF).* The PSF defines the image-forming behavior of the lens. Looking at the PSF yields the same information as looking at the modulation transfer function; the difference is that the PSF is in ...

In the Journal of Refractive Surgery from the August of 2018 issue, the article written by Rohit Shetty M.D. Et. al titled Wavefront-Guided LASIK Has Comparable Ocular and Corneal Aberrometric Outcomes but Better Visual Acuity Outcomes Than SMILE in Myopic Eyes compares Wavefront Guided LASIK (WFG) with small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).. In this study, 48 SMILE eyes were completed and 58 WFG LASIK eyes were completed. The eyes were re-tested at the one month and 3 month post-operative periods using corneal topography and anterior aberration assessment. Both WFG LASIK and SMILE had comparable safety and efficacy. However, it was noticed that more WFG LASIK eyes had achieved an uncorrected distance vision of 20/16 after surgery than SMILE eyes. WFG LASIK and SMILE had similar aberrometric outcomes but WFG has better postoperative visual acuity. The experience was small pupil size, internal aberrations and wound healing can enable similar outcomes with both procedures.. Here at ...

1} Discovery of the fact that certain strains of each species of these bacteria can be mixed without harmful effect to the properties of either is a discovery of their qualities of noninhibition. It is no more than the discovery of some of the handiwork of nature, and hence is not patentable. The aggregation of select strains of the several species into one product is an application of that newly discovered natural principle. But however ingenious the discovery of that natural principle may have been, the application of it is hardly more than an advance in the packaging of the inoculants. Each of the species of root nodule bacteria contained in the package infects the same group of leguminous plants which it always infected. No species acquires a different use. The combination of species produces no new bacteria, no change in the six species of bacteria, and no enlargement of the range of their utility. Each species has the same effect it always had. The bacteria perform in their natural way. ...
