(+info)Tardigrades, also known as water bears or moss piglets, are not a medical term but rather a type of microscopic eight-legged creature (phylum Tardigrada) that inhabit diverse environments such as leaf litter, soil, and aquatic habitats. They have the ability to survive extreme conditions, including high radiation levels and temperatures, and low water availability through a process called cryptobiosis.
While tardigrades are not typically associated with human health or medicine, they have been used in some medical research as model organisms for studying stress tolerance and aging due to their unique abilities to survive harsh environments.
Osmometry is a laboratory technique used to measure the osmolarity or tonicity of a solution. Osmolarity refers to the number of osmoles (a unit of measurement for solute concentration) present in a given volume of solution, typically expressed as osmoles per liter (osm/L). Tonicity, on the other hand, is a measure of the effective osmotic pressure exerted by a solution, taking into account the presence of impermeable solutes.
In an osmometry experiment, a sample solution is placed in a chamber separated from a reference solution by a semi-permeable membrane that allows the passage of solvent (usually water) but not solute molecules. The membrane separates the two solutions, creating two distinct compartments.
As the solvent moves across the membrane to balance out the osmotic pressure difference between the two solutions, a change in volume occurs in one or both of the compartments. By measuring this volume change and knowing the initial volumes of the sample and reference solutions, the osmolarity or tonicity of the sample solution can be calculated using established formulas.
Osmometry is an essential tool in various fields, including biology, chemistry, pharmacology, and clinical medicine, as it allows researchers and healthcare professionals to study and understand the behavior of solutes and solvents under different conditions, evaluate the effects of osmotic pressure on cells and tissues, and develop and test medical treatments and therapies.
Arthropods are a phylum of animals characterized by the presence of a segmented body, a pair of jointed appendages on each segment, and a tough exoskeleton made of chitin. This phylum includes insects, arachnids (spiders, scorpions, mites), crustaceans (crabs, lobsters, shrimp), and myriapods (centipedes, millipedes). They are the largest group of animals on Earth, making up more than 80% of all described species. Arthropods can be found in nearly every habitat, from the deep sea to mountaintops, and play important roles in ecosystems as decomposers, pollinators, and predators.
I'm sorry for any confusion, but "Invertebrates" is not a medical term. It is a term used in biology to describe a vast group of animals that do not have a vertebral column or spinal cord. This includes creatures such as insects, worms, starfish, and shellfish, among many others. They are classified as invertebrates because they lack a backbone, which is a characteristic of vertebrates, or animals that include humans and other mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.

- Most of [the] tardigrade species were described from mosses and lichens - thus any cushion of moss seems to be interesting for people working on tardigrades," Arakawa told Live Science in an email. (livescience.com)
- More tardigrade-hunting is necessary to find out how tardigrades diversified and adapted over time, he said. (livescience.com)
- Cryptobiosis is the ability to basically dry itself out- when in the cryptobiotic state tardigrades can lose almost all of their water, a sort of tardigrade jerky. (jstor.org)

Malware8
- In a new threat advisory , the Bioeconomy Information Sharing and Analysis Center (BIO-ISAC) revealed that the first attack believed to be launched using this new malware dubbed "Tardigrade" occurred in the spring of this year. (techradar.com)
- At that time, Tardigrade was used in a cyberattack on a large biomanufacturing facility though a second facility was hit using the same malware just last month. (techradar.com)
- As reported by SiliconANGLE , Tardigrade is primarily used for espionage though the malware also causes other issues on the systems it infects including network outages. (techradar.com)
- The origins of the code used in Tardigrade is also up for debate as BIO-ISAC believes the malware is based on Smoke Loader though security researchers that spoke with Bleeping Computer claim that it is a form of the Cobalt Strike HTTP beacon as opposed to an entirely new malware strain. (techradar.com)
- Regardless of its origin, Tardigrade is quite dangerous and we'll likely find out more regarding this new malware as security researchers and even government agencies delve deeper into its code in an attempt to discover its true origins. (techradar.com)
- Dubbed Tardigrade by the Bioeconomy Information Sharing and Analysis Center (BIO-ISAC), the attacks used malware that can adapt to its environment, conceal itself, and even operate autonomously when cut off from its command-and-control server (C2), according to a recent advisory released by BIO-ISAC. (threatpost.com)
- According to BioBright, a biomedical and cybersecurity firm and BIO-ISAC member, researchers determined that the malware used in the Tardigrade attacks is a variant of the SmokeLoader family with metamorphic capabilities. (threatpost.com)
- Specifically, they doubted BioBright researchers' identification of an intserrs644.dll file submitted to VirusTotal as being the new Tardigrade malware/SmokeLoader variant. (threatpost.com)
