Molecular pain, a new era of pain research and medicine. (1/15)

Molecular pain is a relatively new and rapidly expanding research field that represents an advanced step from conventional pain research. Molecular pain research addresses physiological and pathological pain at the cellular, subcellular and molecular levels. These studies integrate pain research with molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, modern electrophysiology and neurobiology. The field of molecular pain research has been rapidly expanding in the recent years, and has great promise for the identification of highly specific and effective targets for the treatment of intractable pain. Although several existing journals publish articles on classical pain research, none are specifically dedicated to molecular pain research. Therefore, a new journal focused on molecular pain research is needed. Molecular Pain, an Open Access, peer-reviewed, online journal, will provide a forum for molecular pain scientists to communicate their research findings in a targeted manner to others in this important and growing field.  (+info)

Hospital staff and patient recognition toward opening of medical services market, and factors in selecting a foreign hospital. (2/15)

PURPOSE: The objectives of this study are to compare the hospital employees' and patients' recognition and attitudes toward the opening of the medical services market, to analyze the differences between hospital employees and patients on the factors in selecting a foreign hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study collected and analyzed data using systematic questionnaires that were self-administered by employees and outpatients to compare their recognition of the opening of the medical services market and the factors involved in selecting a foreign hospital. RESULTS: Employees exhibited a higher level of recognition than the patients. Reasons for agreement were to ensure the right of selection for both the employees and patients. Reasons for disagreement, however, were split between the two groups: degraded public characteristics of medical services, for employees; and expensive medical fees, for patients. The most urgent task to prepare for the opening of the medical services market is the improvement of the diagnosis and treatment technologies for employees, and improvement of the services provided by hospital staff for patients. CONCLUSION: Korean hospitals shall need to improve their diagnosis and treatment technologies and provide medical services of high quality in order to compete with foreign hospitals.  (+info)

miRNA is a set of small, non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression post transcription. These molecules have an impact on a wide range of biological functions such as cell cycle control, stem cell differentiation, immune modulation, viral replication, and metabolic control. As the aforementioned processes are involved in the pathology of various diseases, tests performed on miRNAs help in disease treatment. Moreover, miRNAs can be easily manipulated than proteins, thus making them more useful for clinical diagnostics and therapeutics applications. The global miRNA tools and services market was valued at $146 million in 2015 and is expected to reach $620 million by 2022, growing at a CAGR of 23.4% during the forecast period. It is expected to witness significant growth owing to the rise in incidence of cancer, auto-immune, and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, miRNA molecules possess specific properties, such as higher tissue and organ specificity; and ability to cross the ...

To qualify for a concealed carry license under House Bill 183, Illinois residents would have to have a valid Firearm Owners Identification card, be 21 years old and complete eight hours of training. Licenses would cost $50 and last for five years. From that fee, $20 would be designated to fix the states flawed system of reporting mental health records. A recent audit found that county officials were often not submitting such records to the state. The Illinois State Police, which currently issues FOID cards, would issue carry licenses. The state police would be required to notify local law enforcement if a resident of their jurisdiction applies for a license. The local police could object to applications, but the ultimate decision would be made by the state police. The Illinois State Police are in favor of the measure. "Everything that you find in this bill are things that the Illinois State Police can do," said Illinois State Police Lt. Darrin Clark ...

Submitted to the State Journal-Register. September 25, 2015. To the Editor:. Patients born between the years 1945-1965 should be screened for hepatitis C. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say so, as does the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Both of these public health entities have published clinical guidelines identifying baby boomers as being most at risk for this blood condition that in some cases leads to chronic liver disease and death.. Earlier this year, members of the General Assembly passed legislation mandating physicians offer a hepatitis C screening to all patients born during the high-risk years. The Illinois State Medical Society believes that legislating any medical guideline, of which there are more than 7,500, is inappropriate, because guidelines evolve and change; what represents the state of the art today may seem like ancient medicine in a few short years. Codifying treatments into law requires the government to change the law when medical ...

Inflammation, trauma or nerve injury trigger low-level activity in C-fibres and may cause long-lasting hyperalgesia. Long-term potentiation (LTP) at synapses of primary afferent C-fibres is considered to underlie some forms of hyperalgesia. In previous studies, high- but not low-frequency conditioning stimulation of C-fibres has, however, been used to induce LTP in pain pathways. Recently we could show that also conditioning low-frequency stimulation (LFS) at C-fibre intensity induces LTP in vitro as well as in the intact animal, i.e. with tonic descending inhibition fully active. In the slice preparation, this form of LTP requires a rise in postsynaptic Ca2+-concentration and activation of Ca2+-dependent signalling pathways. Here, we investigated the signalling mechanisms underlying this novel form of LTP in vivo. We found that the signal transduction pathways causing LFS-induced LTP in vivo include activation of neurokinin 1 and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors, rise of [Ca2+]i from intracellular stores
Painful Diabetic Neuropathy (PDN) affects more than 25% of patients with type 2 diabetes; however, the pathogenesis remains unclear due to lack of knowledge of the molecular mechanisms leading to PDN. In our current study, we use an animal model of type 2 diabetes in order to understand the roles of p38 in PDN. Previously, we have demonstrated that the C57BLK db/db (db/db) mouse, a model of type 2 diabetes that carries the loss-of-function leptin receptor mutant, develops mechanical allodynia in the hind paws during the early stage (6-12 wk of age) of diabetes. Using this timeline of PDN, we can investigate the signaling mechanisms underlying mechanical allodynia in the db/db mouse. We studied the role of p38 in lumbar dorsal root ganglia (LDRG) during the development of mechanical allodynia in db/db mice. p38 phosphorylation was detected by immunoblots at the early stage of mechanical allodynia in LDRG of diabetic mice. Phosphorylated p38 (pp38) immunoreactivity was detected mostly in the small- to

Within the systems and synthetic biology fields, the groups findings reveal an additional layer of regulation with which viruses co-evolve with coding-genes and interlace pathways in their hosts.. "The study also presents a mechanism for synchronizing initiation of gene expression in synthetic gene circuitry," stated Kathrin Bohn-Wippert, a postdoctoral researcher and first author of the paper, "Genetic coupling of viral-host gene expression presents migratory challenges in HIV therapies" (10.1038/NCOMMS15006), appearing in Nature Communications. "Specifically, in this framework of viral-host genetic coupling we found that the HIV and human CXCR4 promoters are co-regulated and co-expressed. CXCR4 is a chemokine receptor involved in one of the major migratory pathways throughout our body.". "We have demonstrated, for the first time, that the virus co-expresses with the receptor in order to control infected cell migration and its importance in HIV shock and kill eradication strategies ...

I want the press to have a sense of immediacy vital to a small-ish, specific contemporary reading audience that seeks literature with a what I call a visceral-mystical aesthetic-work that seeks a way to engage the big questions by examining the particular leaky, fleshy, grotesque difficulties, embarrassments, and traumas of being embodied.. co•im•presss closest influences are Action Books, Black Ocean, Noemi Press, Spork, Birds of Lace, Fence, and Tarpaulin Sky. The editorial perspective of the journal Mandorla: New Writing from the Americas is also a significant influence (Roberto Tejada, Kristin Dykstra, and Gabriel Bernal Granados, editors). I worked on production and marketing/distribution for Mandorla from 2009 to 2013 via Illinois State Universitys Publications Unit, and through that work, I also learned of its forerunner in spirit, El Corno Emplumado / The Plumed Horn (Margaret Randall and Sergio Mondragon, editors; there is a really great documentary on The Plumed Horn, too).
