Lymphocyte Specific Protein Tyrosine Kinase p56(lck)
This enzyme is a lymphoid-specific src family tyrosine kinase that is critical for T-cell development and activation. Lck is associated with the cytoplasmic domains of CD4, CD8 and the beta-chain of the IL-2 receptor, and is thought to be involved in the earliest steps of TCR-mediated T-cell activation.
A genus of the family CEBIDAE, subfamily CEBINAE, consisting of four species which are divided into two groups, the tufted and untufted. C. apella has tufts of hair over the eyes and sides of the head. The remaining species are without tufts - C. capucinus, C. nigrivultatus, and C. albifrons. Cebus inhabits the forests of Central and South America.

Cell Line, Transformed
Lymphocytes responsible for cell-mediated immunity. Two types have been identified - cytotoxic (T-LYMPHOCYTES, CYTOTOXIC) and helper T-lymphocytes (T-LYMPHOCYTES, HELPER-INDUCER). They are formed when lymphocytes circulate through the THYMUS GLAND and differentiate to thymocytes. When exposed to an antigen, they divide rapidly and produce large numbers of new T cells sensitized to that antigen.

Low oxygen inhibits but complex high-glucose medium facilitates in vitro maturation of squirrel monkey oocyte-granulosa cell complexes. (1/659)PURPOSE: The objectives of these in vitro maturation studies in primate cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were to evaluate the effect of a reduced-oxygen environment and to compare medium with a high-glucose concentration to medium with pyruvate but no glucose. METHODS: COCs were retrieved from squirrel monkeys stimulated with 1 mg of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) for 4-6 days. Experiment 1 examined maturation after 48 hr in 5% O2/5% CO2/90% N2 compared with 5% CO2/air. The medium was CMRL-1066 containing moderate glucose (5.5 mM) supplemented with 1 mM glutamine, 0.33 mM pyruvate, 0.075 IU/ml human FSH, 5 IU/ml human chorionic gonadotropin, 75 U penicillin G/ml, and 20% fetal bovine serum. Experiment 2 in 5% CO2/air, compared P-1 medium (pyruvate and lactate but no glucose) to Waymouth's medium (27.5 mM glucose), both with identical supplements. RESULTS: Only 3 (8%) of 37 COCs matured in 5% O2, while 39 (49%) of 80 matured in ambient O2. Fourteen (22%) of 64 complexes matured in P-1 medium, compared to 47 (49%) of 96 meiosis II oocytes in Waymouth's medium (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These are the first primate studies showing detrimental effects of reduced-oxygen culture on in vitro maturation. Additionally, maturation was enhanced with complex high-glucose medium suggesting that the predominant metabolism is aerobic glycolysis. (+info)
Endogenous thermoregulatory rhythms of squirrel monkeys in thermoneutrality and cold. (2/659)Whole body heat production (HP) and heat loss (HL) were examined to determine if the free-running circadian rhythm in body temperature (Tb) results from coordinated changes in HP and HL rhythms in thermoneutrality (27 degrees C) as well as mild cold (17 degrees C). Squirrel monkey metabolism (n = 6) was monitored by both indirect and direct calorimetry, with telemetered measurement of Tb and activity. Feeding was also measured. Rhythms of HP, HL, and conductance were tightly coupled with the circadian Tb rhythm at both ambient temperatures (TA). At 17 degrees C, increased HP compensated for higher HL at all phases of the Tb rhythm, resulting in only minor changes to Tb. Parallel compensatory changes of HP and HL were seen at all rhythm phases at both TA. Similar time courses of Tb, HP, and HL in their respective rhythms and the relative stability of Tb during both active and rest periods suggest action of the circadian timing system on Tb set point. Trigeminal nerve and brainstem catecholamine systems in cerebral vasospasm. (3/659)Cisternal blood injection in the rat and squirrel monkey produces a biphasic cerebral vasospasm, a decrease in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and an increase in glucose uptake (CMRglu) due to an anaerobic glucolysis actually representing a decrease in metabolism. Lesioning of the A2-nucleus, its ascending cathecolamine pathways or their projection site, the median eminence in the hypothalamus, prevents the occurrence of spasm. A unilateral postganglionic trigeminal lesion causes an ipsilateral constriction of the cerebral arteries while a preganglionic lesion does not affect the baseline arterial diameter. Both kinds of trigeminal lesions induce a global increase in glucose uptake of about 50% without influencing CBF. Following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) the decrease in CBF in both groups of lesioned animals is similar to that seen in controls. After SAH there is no further change in CMRglu in the animals with a preganglionic lesion, while in the postganglionically lesioned animals there is an additional increase in CMRglu of about 50% as compared to controls or animals with a preganglionic lesion. Treatment with the peptidergic substance P (SP) antagonist, spantide, or gammaglobulin against SP prevents or significantly reduces the degree of spasm and the changes in flow and metabolism normally seen post-SAH. The non-peptidergic neurokinins NK1 and NK3 antagonists do not influence flow and metabolism in SAH animals. The NK2 seems to change both flow and metabolism post-SAH in rats. (+info)
Effects of viewing distance on the responses of horizontal canal-related secondary vestibular neurons during angular head rotation. (4/659)Effects of viewing distance on the responses of horizontal canal-related secondary vestibular neurons during angular head rotation. The eye movements generated by the horizontal canal-related angular vestibuloocular reflex (AVOR) depend on the distance of the image from the head and the axis of head rotation. The effects of viewing distance on the responses of 105 horizontal canal-related central vestibular neurons were examined in two squirrel monkeys that were trained to fixate small, earth-stationary targets at different distances (10 and 150 cm) from their eyes. The majority of these cells (77/105) were identified as secondary vestibular neurons by synaptic activation following electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve. All of the viewing distance-sensitive units were also sensitive to eye movements in the absence of head movements. Some classes of eye movement-related vestibular units were more sensitive to viewing distance than others. For example, the average increase in rotational gain (discharge rate/head velocity) of position-vestibular-pause units was 20%, whereas the gain increase of eye-head-velocity units was 44%. The concomitant change in gain of the AVOR was 11%. Near viewing responses of units phase lagged the responses they generated during far target viewing by 6-25 degrees. A similar phase lag was not observed in either the near AVOR eye movements or in the firing behavior of burst-position units in the vestibular nuclei whose firing behavior was only related to eye movements. The viewing distance-related increase in the evoked eye movements and in the rotational gain of all unit classes declined progressively as stimulus frequency increased from 0.7 to 4.0 Hz. When monkeys canceled their VOR by fixating head-stationary targets, the responses recorded during near and far target viewing were comparable. However, the viewing distance-related response changes exhibited by central units were not directly attributable to the eye movement signals they generated. Subtraction of static eye position signals reduced, but did not abolish viewing distance gain changes in most units. Smooth pursuit eye velocity sensitivity and viewing distance sensitivity were not well correlated. We conclude that the central premotor pathways that mediate the AVOR also mediate viewing distance-related changes in the reflex. Because irregular vestibular nerve afferents are necessary for viewing distance-related gain changes in the AVOR, we suggest that a central estimate of viewing distance is used to parametrically modify vestibular afferent inputs to secondary vestibuloocular reflex pathways. Effects of viewing distance on the responses of vestibular neurons to combined angular and linear vestibular stimulation. (5/659)Effects of viewing distance on the responses of vestibular neurons to combined angular and linear vestibular stimulation. The firing behavior of 59 horizontal canal-related secondary vestibular neurons was studied in alert squirrel monkeys during the combined angular and linear vestibuloocular reflex (CVOR). The CVOR was evoked by positioning the animal's head 20 cm in front of, or behind, the axis of rotation during whole body rotation (0.7, 1.9, and 4.0 Hz). The effect of viewing distance was studied by having the monkeys fixate small targets that were either near (10 cm) or far (1.3-1.7 m) from the eyes. Most units (50/59) were sensitive to eye movements and were monosynaptically activated after electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve (51/56 tested). The responses of eye movement-related units were significantly affected by viewing distance. The viewing distance-related change in response gain of many eye-head-velocity and burst-position units was comparable with the change in eye movement gain. On the other hand, position-vestibular-pause units were approximately half as sensitive to changes in viewing distance as were eye movements. The sensitivity of units to the linear vestibuloocular reflex (LVOR) was estimated by subtraction of angular vestibuloocular reflex (AVOR)-related responses recorded with the head in the center of the axis of rotation from CVOR responses. During far target viewing, unit sensitivity to linear translation was small, but during near target viewing the firing rate of many units was strongly modulated. The LVOR responses and viewing distance-related LVOR responses of most units were nearly in phase with linear head velocity. The signals generated by secondary vestibular units during voluntary cancellation of the AVOR and CVOR were comparable. However, unit sensitivity to linear translation and angular rotation were not well correlated either during far or near target viewing. Unit LVOR responses were also not well correlated with their sensitivity to smooth pursuit eye movements or their sensitivity to viewing distance during the AVOR. On the other hand there was a significant correlation between static eye position sensitivity and sensitivity to viewing distance. We conclude that secondary horizontal canal-related vestibuloocular pathways are an important part of the premotor neural substrate that produces the LVOR. The otolith sensory signals that appear on these pathways have been spatially and temporally transformed to match the angular eye movement commands required to stabilize images at different distances. We suggest that this transformation may be performed by the circuits related to temporal integration of the LVOR. (+info)
Representational plasticity in cortical area 3b paralleling tactual-motor skill acquisition in adult monkeys. (6/659)The representations of the surfaces of the hand in the primary somatosensory cortical field, area 3b, were reconstructed in detail in seven owl monkeys and two squirrel monkeys trained to pick up food pellets from five wells of different sizes. From an early clumsy performance in which several to many retrieval attempts were required for each successful pellet retrieval, the monkeys exhibited a gradual improvement in digital dexterity as shown by significant decreases in mean numbers of grasp attempts/successful retrieval and corresponding standard deviations (e.g. 5.8 +/- 4.5 and 4.8 +/- 3.1 respectively, for the smallest well) between the first and last training sessions. All monkeys commonly used alternative, specific retrieval strategies involving various combinations of digits for significant time epochs before developing a highly successful strategy, which, once achieved, was rapidly stereotyped. For example, the numbers of digit combinations used during the first five versus the last five training sessions decreased from 3.3 +/- 0.7 to 1.8 +/- 0.6 for the smallest well. In both owl and squirrel monkeys, as the behavior came to be stereotyped, monkeys reliably engaged limited surfaces of the glabrous tips of two digits (in eight monkeys), or of three digits (in one monkey) in the palpation and manipulation of these small pellets for their location, capture, and transportation to the mouth. In cortical area 3b, the magnification of representation of these differentially engaged glabrous fingertip surfaces was nearly 2x larger than for the corresponding surfaces of other hand digits, or for the contralateral cortical representations of the same digit surfaces on the opposite hand. In parallel, cutaneous receptive field for area 3b neurons representing crucial digital tip surfaces were less than half as large as were those representing the corresponding surfaces of control digits. Receptive field overlaps were smaller on the trained fingertips than on control fingers. Moreover, the proportion of small overlaps was greater for the trained digits (76 +/- 7%) than for the other digits of the same hand (49 +/- 5.4%). There was still a simple, single--but apparently topologically expanded--representation of these differentially engaged skin surfaces in these monkeys. Thus, with very limited manual exercise over a total period of a few hours of practice at a skill played out in brief daily sessions over a several week long training period, the representations of skin surfaces providing information crucial for successfully performing a small-object retrieval behavior appeared to be substantially remodeled in the most 'primary' of the SI somatosensory cortical fields, cortical area 3b. By that remodeling, behaviorally important skin surfaces were represented in a much finer representational grain than normal. Some implications of these findings for motor skill acquisition are discussed. (+info)
Altered serotonin innervation patterns in the forebrain of monkeys treated with (+/-)3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine seven years previously: factors influencing abnormal recovery. (7/659)The recreational drug (+/-)3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "Ecstasy") is a potent and selective brain serotonin (5-HT) neurotoxin in animals and, possibly, in humans. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether brain 5-HT deficits persist in squirrel monkeys beyond the 18-month period studied previously and to identify factors that influence recovery of injured 5-HT axons. Seven years after treatment, abnormal brain 5-HT innervation patterns were still evident in MDMA-treated monkeys, although 5-HT deficits in some regions were less severe than those observed at 18 months. No loss of 5-HT nerve cell bodies in the rostral raphe nuclei was found, indicating that abnormal innervation patterns in MDMA-treated monkeys are not the result of loss of a particular 5-HT nerve cell group. Factors that influence recovery of 5-HT axons after MDMA injury are (1) the distance of the affected axon terminal field from the rostral raphe nuclei, (2) the degree of initial 5-HT axonal injury, and possibly (3) the proximity of damaged 5-HT axons to myelinated fiber tracts. Additional studies are needed to better understand these and other factors that influence the response of primate 5-HT neurons to MDMA injury and to determine whether the present findings generalize to humans who use MDMA for recreational purposes. Contribution of the cerebellar flocculus to gaze control during active head movements. (8/659)The flocculus and ventral paraflocculus are adjacent regions of the cerebellar cortex that are essential for controlling smooth pursuit eye movements and for altering the performance of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). The question addressed in this study is whether these regions of the cerebellum are more globally involved in controlling gaze, regardless of whether eye or active head movements are used to pursue moving visual targets. Single-unit recordings were obtained from Purkinje (Pk) cells in the floccular region of squirrel monkeys that were trained to fixate and pursue small visual targets. Cell firing rate was recorded during smooth pursuit eye movements, cancellation of the VOR, combined eye-head pursuit, and spontaneous gaze shifts in the absence of targets. Pk cells were found to be much less sensitive to gaze velocity during combined eye-head pursuit than during ocular pursuit. They were not sensitive to gaze or head velocity during gaze saccades. Temporary inactivation of the floccular region by muscimol injection compromised ocular pursuit but had little effect on the ability of monkeys to pursue visual targets with head movements or to cancel the VOR during active head movements. Thus the signals produced by Pk cells in the floccular region are necessary for controlling smooth pursuit eye movements but not for coordinating gaze during active head movements. The results imply that individual functional modules in the cerebellar cortex are less involved in the global organization and coordination of movements than with parametric control of movements produced by a specific part of the body. N2 - To more fully characterize brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in non-human primates, BAEPs were recorded from chronically implanted epidural electrodes in 10 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). The effects of stimulus intensity, repetition rate, and anesthesia (ketamine 20 mg/kg i.m.) on peak latencies and inter-peak intervals were evaluated. Monkey wave forms consisted of approximately 7 peaks (I-VII), each exhibiting similar latencies across sessions, with later peaks exhibiting greater variability. In some subjects, additional peaks (IIa, IIIa) and slow potentials were recorded. The slow potentials provided a substratum for peaks IV through VII. As with human, monkey peaks exhibited systematic changes in latency with changes in stimulus intensity or repetition rate. These shifts ...
Dilative cardiomyopathy leading to congestive heart failure in a male squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus)
A 17-year-old, 1-kg, colony-housed, male squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) developed clinical signs of congestive heart failure. The monkey presented with lethargy, increased heart and respiratory rates, and mild abdominal distention. The clinical history, laboratory analysis, and radiographic findings were consistent with heart failure due to dilative cardiomyopathy. Gross and microscopic examination of the heart confirmed a dilative cardiomyopathy. This is the first report describing congestive heart failure caused by dilative cardiomyopathy in a squirrel monkey. Spontaneous dilative cardiomyopathy may be infrequently observed in the squirrel monkeys because they are not routinely housed in the research environment during their advancing years ...

Natural Distribution of Squirrel Monkey Retrovirus Proviral Sequences in Primate DNAs | Microbiology Society
Summary 3H-labelled 70S RNA of squirrel monkey retrovirus (SMRV) hybridized to a high degree (> 52%) to the DNA of various tissues of two squirrel monkeys. Hybridization of the same probe to DNAs of other primates including New World monkeys (Woolly monkey, capuchin, owl monkey), Old World monkeys (rhesus, African green), apes (gibbon, chimpanzee), and human (A204 cells infected with MPMV) revealed no significant hybridization. Analysis of the kinetics of hybridization indicated that SMRV provirus was present in multiple copies in various squirrel monkey tissues (C 0 t ½ = 120 to 400) and in SMRV-infected A204 cells at a low number of copies (C 0 t ½ = 1500). These results demonstrate that SMRV is an endogenous virus of squirrel monkeys and the first isolated from a New World monkey.
Animals. Adult female squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) weighing between 0.5 and 0.7 kg were purchased from Worldwide Primates (Miami, FL) and quarantined for 1 month according to California State regulations. All care and treatments were carried out in accordance with the Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources (1996) and were approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at the Parkinsons Institute. Monkeys were housed in a room with a 13:11-h light/dark cycle with food given once daily and water ad libitum. Animals were divided into two treatment groups: control (n = 6) and paraquat-treated (n = 8). The paraquat group received one s.c. injection of 2.5 mg/kg paraquat dichloride hydrate (Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO) per week for 6 weeks and were euthanized 2 or 4 weeks after the final injection. This treatment paradigm was chosen for several reasons. We used a dose of 2.5 mg/kg paraquat because higher doses induced lung toxicity, as previously reported in other species ...

Saimiri has a complicated taxonomic history, and there is continuing disagreement about the number of valid taxa. Despite these controversies, one point of consensus among morphologists has been that the eastern Amazonian populations of squirrel monkeys form a single terminal taxon, Saimiri sciureus sciureus (Linnaeus, 1758). This group is distributed to both the north and south of the middle to lower Amazon River and in the Marajó Archipelago. However, a recent molecular study by Lavergne and colleagues suggested that the Saimiri sciureus complex (comprised of S. s. sciureus sensu lato, S. s. albigena, S. s. macrodon, and S. s. cassiquiarensis) was paraphyletic. The discordance between morphological and molecular studies prompted us to conduct a new multidisciplinary analysis, employing a combination of morphological, morphometric, and molecular markers. Our results suggest the currently recognized taxon S. s. sciureus contains two distinct species, recognized by the Phylogenetic Species ...

Abstract We report a trial in squirrel monkeys of 2 recombinant Plasmodium vivax malaria vaccine candidates based on the circumsporozoite (CS) protein. One recombinant (NSI81 V20), produced in Escherichia coli, contains the repeat region of the CS protein. The other (VIVAX-1) recombinant is yeast-derived and contains the entire repeat domain and part of the surrounding N-terminal and C-terminal regions. Both antigens were administered with alum and muramyl tripeptide as adjuvants. No formulations caused toxic side effects. Both antigens, when administered with alum, induced high levels of sporozoite antibodies in all animals. Another group of animals was immunized with irradiated sporozoites alone. Upon challenge, a few immunized animals did not develop detectable parasitemia and others developed parasitemia only after a prolonged prepatent period. Monkeys immunized with irradiated sporozoites had higher levels of antibody but no increased protection. There was no correlation between protection and

The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene | Experimental Leptospirosis in Monkeys*
Summary Adult cebus (Cebus sp.), patas (Cercopithecus patas), rhesus (Macaca mulatta), and vervet (Cercopithecus aethiops) monkeys were found susceptible to experimental infection with Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae (as evidenced by febrile response, weight loss, antibody production, and recovery of leptospires from hemoculture of some of the animals), although they did not show frank illness. Vervets were similarly susceptible to infection with L. canicola, L. mini georgia, and L. pomona. Leptospiruria was uncommon. Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) given L. icterohaemorrhagiae had in contrast clinically acute leptospiral disease, sometimes fatal, with pronounced icterus and minimal hepatic lesions accompanied by markedly increased indirect bilirubin and normal transaminase levels. The findings suggest that hemolysis may be a significant factor in the early development of jaundice in these animals. In some of the primates tested, the tendency of leptospiral agglutinins to disappear within a few
The present study compared interactions among dopamine D1-like agonists and partial agonists with cocaine on the locomotor stimulant effects of cocaine, as well as the discriminative-stimulus effects of cocaine, and effects of cocaine on rates of responding. Cocaine alone produced a dose-related stimulation of locomotor activity in Swiss-Webster mice and a dose-related increase in the proportion of responses on the cocaine-appropriate response key in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) trained to discriminate cocaine (0.3 mg/kg i.m.) from saline. None of the D1 dopaminergic agents fully reproduced these effects, with SKF 77434 producing marginal stimulation of locomotor activity and SCH 23390, SCH 39166, and SKF 77434 producing some, although incomplete substitution for cocaine in monkeys discriminating cocaine. The D1 dopamine antagonists SCH 23390, SCH 39166, and A-69024 dose-dependently shifted the cocaine dose-effect curve for locomotor activity to the right and decreased the efficacy of ...

Lets Talk Primates: Male squirrel monkeys made to see in living color
Why do humans see in all three colors? There isnt a certain answer. Multiple hypotheses have been proposed. Peter Lucas, my former professor, believes our ability to see reds was advantageous in helping our ancestors see young red leaves, which are especially nutritious, against a background that is mostly made up of shades of green (Lucas et al., 1998). Our closest living relatives, chimpanzees and gorillas, consume a diet mainly composed of leaves. Or perhaps we see reds because red fruit is often ripe and therefore we can distinguish ripe fruit against a green background (Allen, 1879; Mollon, 1989; Fleagle, 1999). Yet, if this were the complete answer, wouldnt we expect New World Monkeys, who consume fruit, to see red wavelengths? Another hypothesis suggests that our ability to see shades of red occurred so that male Old World Monkeys could more easily discern the sexual swellings of females that were in estrous (Liman and Innan, 2003 ...

Tolbutamide (TB; 1-butyl-3-p-tolylsulfonylurea) was used for metabolism studies with hepatocytes isolated from the rat, rabbit, dog, and squirrel monkey to validate their usefulness as models for comparative in vivo metabolism. Hepatocytes were prepared by whole liver or biopsy perfusion. TB (3 X 10(-4) M) was metabolized by each of the preparations over a 4-hr incubation period at rates ranging from 175.8 to 9.2 pmol/10(6) cells/min with the rates from hepatocytes from: rat greater than rabbit much greater than squirrel monkey greater than dog. The metabolite profiles determined in extracts of hepatocyte suspensions after 4 hr of incubation showed marked species differences. The major metabolite for the rat and squirrel monkey was 1-butyl-3-p-hydroxy-methylphenylsulfonylurea (73.2 and 46.7% of total metabolites, respectively). p-Tolylsulfonylurea and p-tolylsulfonamide were the major metabolites found in the dog (44.1 and 40.2%, respectively). Rabbit hepatocytes formed mostly ...

Staphylococcus simiae - Wikipedia
Staphylococcus simiae is a Gram-positive, coagulase-negative member of the bacterial genus Staphylococcus consisting of clustered cocci. This species was originally isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of South American squirrel monkeys, Saimiri sciureus, and found to be genetically similar to S. aureus, but more biochemically similar to S. piscifermentans. A draft genome of S. simiae was sequenced. Black-capped squirrel monkey - Wikipedia
A Black-capped squirrel monkey will typically reach sexual maturation at around 3 years of age for females and 5 years of age for males. The yearly reproductive cycle of mature Saimiri has been observed by several researchers to be affected by a number of environmental factors, including the cycles of rainfall and levels of illumination in their habitat. The mating season coincides with the dry season, and will typically result in a single infant being born to each mother. It has been suggested that adult female monkeys are more receptive to environmental cues for the mating season to begin, and the response in males is in part attributed to behavioural and scent cues from the females. During the mating season, males of the species will gain a large amount of subcutaneous upper body fat, leading to what is known as a fatted appearance. Males will also become more irritable and aggressive, fight more frequently for the purpose of achieving dominance within the troop, and engage in ...
Squirrel Monkey Adaptations by Shawn George on Prezi
It is shaped like its great ancestor, the squirrel monkey. Its body has a waxy covering so that water just slides off. The teeth are both sharp and flat. It is colored multiple shades of green to blend with the forest. Reproduction: The flying tree monkey can only reproduce when it is matured. This takes 7 years for males to mature and 5 years for females. They reprduce in fall, and the birth comes in spring. Social Strucute: The flying tree monkey travels in groups of 8-100. This increases the chances of its survival because if one monkeys sees food predator, then it alerts the whole pack. Locomotion: The flying tree monkey flies (glides) across the trees. It has very strong arms which help it grasp branches to swing on. Symbiotic Relationships: Mutalism-The flying tree monkey shares a mutalistic relationship with the mnoose. The moose guard the territory in change for food from the monkeys. Behavioral Adaptations The flying tree monkey uses tools (sticks and strands) to get insects from ...

Editor,. We read, over and over again, that portions of our community are telling our City Council that for one reason or another, cell phone and/or wireless antennae should not be installed in their neighborhood. That is all well and good. However, if they do not belong in one neighborhood, they should really be excluded from the entire community. Plainly and simply stated, either we do without cell phones, iPhones, and their ilk, or we accept them. Palo Alto City Council, as you consider applications for future installations, please ask the question of those who oppose the application, should we allow this installation or require the removal of all such technology from Palo Alto?. Some should not be protected from blight and health risk while impacting their fellow citizens.. John Baum. El Cajon Way. Palo Alto. Sukkah policy. Editor,. Lee Daniel Kravetzs Strange Contagion: Inside the Surprising Science of Infectious Behaviors and Viral Emotions and What They Tell Us About Ourselves was born out of tragedy. A series of teen suicides among students and alumni of Palo Altos Gunn High School suggested an epidemic was underway. Kravetz, a new father and resident of Palo Alto, was concerned about his community. What was causing these students to commit suicide? Could the epidemic be stopped? How? These questions prompted Kravetz to explore the way emotions and behaviors are communicated in a society.. Kravetz learns that emotions are not terribly different from communicable diseases. We are highly suggestible creatures, and the emotions of others are easily transmitted. We catch everything from the goals of others around us to courage or bravery or fear to the host of feelings, positive or negative, that others around us bring into the room.. In fact, we are so susceptible to the spread of viral emotions that we dont really even ...
East Palo Alto greenlights pilot program to speed buses on University Avenue for 2021/22 - Transbay Coalition Website
The East Palo Alto city council has authorize an intelligent transit signal priority (iTSP) pilot program on University Avenue. The project will allow non-profit Sustainable Silicon Valley to implement transit signal priority, which involves extending the green light for buses, to five traffic signals between Bay Road and Woodland Avenue. This will speed up bus travel on SamTrans routes 280/281, as well as the Dumbarton U express bus that serves Stanford. University Avenue in East Palo Alto sees high levels of pass through traffic, as workers travel from the East Bay into Silicon Valley. Although traffic has lessened in the pandemic, it will likely return pending office reopening plans. Vehicle traffic results in increased greenhouse gas emissions and delays bus service, which has higher capacity than private single-occupancy vehicles. Speeding up buses reduces travel times for riders and increases bus reliability. These improvements can result in increasing the amount of service SamTrans can ...

N2 - Neuroimaging studies in stroke survivors have suggested that adaptive plasticity occurs following stroke. However, the complex temporal dynamics of neural reorganization after injury make the interpretation of functional imaging studies equivocal. In the present study in adult squirrel monkeys, intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) techniques were used to monitor changes in representational maps of the distal forelimb in the supplementary motor area (SMA) after a unilateral ischemic infarct of primary motor (M1) and premotor distal forelimb representations (DFLs). In each animal, ICMS maps were derived at early (3 wk) and late (13 wk) postinfarct ...
IBIMA Publishing Klebsiella Pneumoniae Infection in a Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri Sciureus) in Grenada, West Indies
Introduction. Klebsiella Pneumoniae is a Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod-to coccobacillus shaped, capsulated bacterium. This organism is a normal intestinal and oral commensal in many nonhuman primates, but infections from pathogenic strains can cause significant morbidity and mortality in these animals (Simmons and Gibson, 2012). Multisystemic abscesses due to invasive K. Pneumoniae strains have been reported in African Green monkeys in the United States recently (Twenhafel et al., 2008). Also, in the recent past, wild-caught and captive monkeys in the Caribbean Island of St. Kitts have been shown to harbor potentially pathogenic strains of K. Pneumoniae(Whitehouse et al., 2010). In all these contexts, international interest on this organism as a cause of disease in non-human primates exists. The present report deals with a fatal case in a pet squirrel monkey in Grenada, West Indies.. History and Methods. An 11 month-old female squirrel monkey brought from Trinidad was kept as a pet ...

Researchers have successfully used gene therapy to cure red-green color blindness in adult squirrel monkeys. Red-green color blindness is the most common single locus genetic disorder in humans. One in 12 men and 1 in 230 women are affected, while 1 in 6 women is a carrier of the inherited condition. Weve added red sensitivity to cone cells in animals that are born with a condition that is exactly like human color blindness, said Dr. William W. Hauswirth, an author of the study. Although color blindness is only moderately life-altering, weve shown we can cure a cone disease in a primate, and that it can be done very safely. Thats extremely encouraging for the development of therapies for human cone diseases that really are blinding. People who are colorblind feel that they are missing out, said Dr. Jay Neitz, one of the senior authors of the study. If we could find a way to do this with complete safety in human eyes, as we did with monkeys, I think there would be a lot of people who ...

Is Mixed-Species Living Cognitively Enriching? Enclosure Use and Welfare in Two Captive Groups of Tufted Capuchins (Sapajus...
Non-human primates have complex relationships with conspecifics and also other animals with whom they share their habitat in the wild. Some primates, such as capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella) and squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus), naturally associate, with the potential to act as both proximate and ultimate influences on each others behavior. There are a number of benefits to exhibiting such species in mixed communities in captivity, for instance the increased social complexity provides both environmental and social enrichment and appropriate cognitive challenges, ultimately enhancing their welfare in restricted captive enclosures. Monitoring how these species interact and utilize their available space is important for effective care and management. But despite this connection, there remains relatively little conclusive data on whether mixed groups of captive primates are cognitively enriching. This study examined patterns of space use in two mixed-species groups of Sapajus and Saimiri housed ...

Quantity discrimination abilities are seen in a diverse range of species with similarities in performance patterns, suggesting common underlying cognitive mechanisms. However, methodological factors that impact performance make it difficult to draw broad phylogenetic comparisons of numerical cognition across studies. For example, some Old World monkeys selected a higher quantity stimulus more frequently when choosing between inedible (pebbles) than edible (food) stimuli. In Experiment 1 we presented brown capuchin (Cebus [Sapajus] paella) and squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) with the same two-choice quantity discrimination task in three different stimulus conditions: edible, inedible, and edible replaced (in which choice stimuli were food items that stood in for the same quantity of food items that were given as a reward ...

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy on Akodon spegazzinii
The species is intermediate in size for the Akodon boliviensis species group; it is smaller than A. polopi and A. sylvanus, but larger than A. boliviensis and A. caenosus. The more distantly related A. budini and A. simulator, which occur in the same area, are larger. Akodon spegazzinii is variable in coloration, ranging from light to dark and from reddish to yellowish brown. In general, animals in wetter, lower-lying areas are darker, and those in open, dry environments are paler. There is also variation within populations, and sometimes young mice are darker and lactating females are more reddish. The formerly recognized species Akodon tucumanensis corresponds to the dark, low-altitude populations, while A. leucolimnaeus and A. alterus represent more reddish, high-altitude animals.. The coloration of the upperparts is generally uniform, with some scattered darker hairs. There is a yellow ring around the eyes, which is more prominent than in A. sylvanus. The ...

The Lucky White Squirrels limited edition print set was originally produced as two 4x 8 panels for a squirrel themed art exhibition held at a Toronto gallery located across from a park where a resident population of albino squirrels live. Working with the punnet square and the network diagram this idiosyncratic info-graphic based artwork explains why seeing an albino squirrel is lucky. The first print, a network diagram, illustrates the mix of genes it would take to create albino progeny from a pair of squirrels each carrying the recessive gene for albinism. The second, in real numbers, illustrates squirrel for squirrel the 1:20,000 odds that this would occur. Purchaseable here for $60 ...

But despite their cute exterior, the animals can wreak havoc on their surroundings, devouring farmers crops, chewing into building wires, and stripping bark-damaging, if not killing, trees outright.. To halt the growth, birth control is the best option. But no squirrel is willing to take a daily pill, and no IUD is small enough. So how do you put a squirrel on birth control?. Thanks to decades of contraceptive research for species such as white-tailed deer, squirrel managers have two options. They can use vaccines to stop the rodents from making sex hormones. Or they can lower the squirrels cholesterol, the molecule from which sex hormones are made.. The major perk ...
FAQs - Scotts Wild Bird Food
While some birders are eager to feed the squirrels, others are not. Squirrels are attracted to many of the ingredients that are common in bird seed. Squirrels enjoy peanuts, black oil sunflower and corn, specifically. If you want to feed the birds but not the squirrels, here are some tips to help you: 1) Install a squirrel proof feeder - one that has a mechanism to prevent squirrels from accessing the feeder ports 2) Place your feeder in a location where it is hard for squirrels to jump onto it, from the bottom or from the top 3) Wrap a Slinky toy around the pole/shepherds hook that your feeder hangs off of - to prevent the squirrel from climbing up the pole, onto the feeder. 3) Use seeds that are less attractive to squirrels - such as nyjer, millet, milo and safflower seed - to deter squirrels. 4) Use exclusively finch feeders - with small ports - that are difficult for squirrels to use, and typically contain seeds that are less attractive to squirrels (such as nyjer seed, found in our ...
Pest advice for controlling Grey Squirrels
You also cannot use live capture traps to remove a grey squirrel from your property in order to release it elsewhere. As an invasive species, it is against the law to release a grey squirrel once caught.. Use of poisons (Warfarin only) - these are only to be used by pest professionals and can only be used inside buildings.. The poison is laid in strategic locations, usually in multiple feeding trays and then checked at regular intervals to assess if it has been successful.. It is important to be aware that these poisons can take a few days to work and, in this time, the squirrel may die out of reach. This can cause a bad smell!. Drey poking is especially effective in winter, when all the leaves are gone from the trees and the nests can be seen more clearly.. It involves a team of people clearing the squirrels from an area by disturbing the dreys and dispatching the emerging squirrels using an air rifle.. Other shooting methods may be employed, for example to clear a population residing in your ...
