Three wishes and psychological functioning in boys with duchenne muscular dystrophy. (1/11)

This study examined Three Wishes (a projective technique commonly used with children) in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a fatal, progressive illness (n = 74). A reliable and parsimonious scoring system was developed to code wish type. Probands' responses were compared with unaffected siblings (n = 32) and a male comparison group (n = 43). Contrary to what was expected, the DMD group did not make significantly more health-related wishes than their siblings or the comparison group. Further, no association between health-related wishes and problem behaviors was observed in the DMD group. These findings indicate that, despite increased stressors, boys with DMD present wishes similar to those of their healthy peers.  (+info)

CHILDHOOD PSYCHOSIS OR MENTAL RETARDATION: A DIAGNOSTIC DILEMMA. I. PSYCHIATRIC AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS. (2/11)

A relatively large percentage of children seen at a mental retardation clinic demonstrated psychotic symptoms. The entire group with psychotic manifestations, 62 in all, were reviewed in order to clarify the diagnosis of childhood psychosis or mental retardation. The 1961 British criteria for childhood psychosis were used and are advocated by the authors. Childhood psychosis was the primary diagnosis in 38 cases, and psychosis secondary to brain damage in 24 cases. Onset of the condition under the age of three years and a poor prognosis for social recovery were characteristic of the entire group.Obvious emotional disorder was present in 21 mothers and 14 fathers. There was a continuum in terms of number of psychotic symptoms, level of intelligence and presence of organic signs. It is concluded that there is an overlap between the entities of childhood psychosis and mental retardation.  (+info)

Vocal cord dysfunction: dealing with aggressivity. (3/11)

QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY: Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is characterised by recurrent attacks of paradoxical adduction of the vocal cords during inspiration, accompanied clinically by dyspnoea attacks with inspiratory stridor lasting between minutes and hours. The aim of the study is to evaluate the self-perception of patients suffering from VCD and how they deal with aggressivity. METHODS: The Giessen Test (GT) and the Picture Frustration Test (PFT) were used on 6 patients with VCD. RESULTS: Five variables show significant differences between the patients with VCD and the values of the normative groups. VCD-patients show an idealized image of themselves, ie relaxed, open, sociable, and capable of devotion. They do not reject accusations against them by others and rarely make self-criticism. In conflicts they behave passively, thus blocking their expression of aggressivity. CONCLUSIONS: In many cases organic disposition and trigger stimuli are thought to be responsible for provoking dyspnoea attacks in VCD. However, the self-perception of patients and their way of dealing with aggressivity strongly suggests that psychosocial factors play a great role in the development of VCD. This requires not only symptom-orientated therapy but also psychological counselling.  (+info)

The brain--the organ of the psychic (the lesions/ the defense mechanisms). (5/11)

The article is based on the Leopold Szondi theory (March 11, 1893 - January 24, 1986), who was a Hungarian psychiatrist. He is known for the psychological tool that bears his name, the Szondi test. He developed a form of depth psychology that had some prominence in Europe in the mid-20th century, but has been ignored for the most part), the study seeks to correlate the szondian test results with the imagistic ones on a wide-range pathology. In the Neurosurgery Department, patients are investigated using modern exploration methods (MRI, CTscan, and computed EEG, etc.) in order to identify possible somatic lesions. The study's subjects selected during 2000-2004 from the patients admitted and investigated for neurosurgical conditions; they were divided into two subgroups, based on whether the organic lesions were or were not present (the independent variable). The exclusion criterion was a lesion due to external causes. Statistically meaningful there are seven types of Ego profiles, in relation with the lesion: the archaic ego [0 -], the inhibited ego [- +], the adaptive ego [- -], the narcissist ego [+ +], the identified ego [+/- 0], the fugitive ego [+/- -] and the possessed ego [0 +]. The nexus in the destiny's analysis description highlights the dialectic between the Ego's functions and the drived dangers when facing the demands of the concrete reality.  (+info)

The role of context and the interpersonal experience of loneliness among older people in a residential care facility. (7/11)

Older people are more prone to experience loneliness when living in residential care facilities. The purpose of this study was to explore older people's experiences of loneliness in the context of institutionalized care. A voluntary and convenience-based sample of 10 white South African older people (age range 62 to 82 years; three men and seven women) was drawn. Data on the subjective experience of loneliness were then gathered through the Mmogo-method, whereby drawings were employed to explore matters and issues of importance in the lives of older people that could be used to deal with loneliness. Data were analyzed thematically and visually as well as through the use of keywords in context. The results showed that older people experienced loneliness in terms of having unavailable interactions due to loss, and an absence of meaningful interpersonal interactions. Meaningful interpersonal interactions were described as when the older people had regular contact and a variety of interactions. Ineffective interpersonal styles (e.g. taking a controlling position in relationships and being rigid) elicited rejection and isolation, and were associated with a lack of confirmatory interpersonal relationships. It is recommended that greater emphasis should be placed on creating awareness of unhealthy group dynamics as well as on psychosocial interventions to develop group support. Interpersonal styles, either effective or ineffective, take place in a social context, which, in this research, was observed to be unsafe, lacking in care, and a non-stimulating environment.  (+info)

Projective techniques are psychological tests used in clinical and experimental settings to assess an individual's personality, emotions, and motivations by tapping into their unconscious thoughts and perceptions. These methods present ambiguous stimuli, such as inkblots or pictures, to the subject, who is then asked to describe or interpret them. The theory behind projective techniques posits that individuals will unconsciously project their inner experiences and feelings onto these ambiguous stimuli, revealing aspects of their personality that may not be accessible through more structured testing methods. However, it's important to note that the interpretation of results from projective techniques can be subjective and may vary based on the training and expertise of the practitioner.
