The effect of heavy drinking on social security old-age and survivors insurance contributions and benefits. (1/4)

This article estimates the effects of heavy alcohol consumption on Social Security Old-Age and Survivor Insurance (OASI) contributions and benefits. The analysis accounts for differential earnings and mortality experiences of individuals with different alcohol consumption patterns and controls for other characteristics, including smoking. Relative to moderate drinkers, heavy drinkers receive fewer OASI benefits relative to their contributions. Ironically, for each cohort of 25-year-olds, eliminating heavy drinking costs the program an additional $3 billion over the cohort's lifetime. Public health campaigns are designed to improve individual health-relevant behaviors and, in the long run, increase longevity. Therefore, if programs for the elderly are structured as longevity-independent defined benefit programs, their success will reward healthier behaviors but increase these programs' outlays and worsen their financial condition.  (+info)

A survey of registered nursing homes in Edinburgh. (4/4)

Between February and November 1984, 18 registered nursing homes in Edinburgh were visited and information was obtained about their 400 patients. Details of the facilities provided by these homes are presented here. Admission and biographical details were obtained for each patient and the dependency of the nursing home population was determined; 28% of the total population appeared to be independent in self-care, though there were large variations between homes. Forty-two patients (10.5%) were found to be receiving Department of Health and Social Security supplementary benefit. The characteristics of this group are compared with those of the rest of the nursing home population. The implications of these observations and recent legislative developments are discussed.  (+info)

"Old Age Assistance" is a term used in the United States that refers to a type of public assistance program that provides financial support to elderly individuals who are in need and have low income. These programs are typically administered by individual states, with funding coming from both state and federal sources. The main goal of Old Age Assistance is to help ensure that older adults have access to basic necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter.

The specific eligibility criteria and benefits provided under Old Age Assistance programs can vary from one state to another. However, in general, individuals who are age 65 or older and have limited financial resources may be eligible for assistance. This may include individuals who do not have enough income or assets to meet their basic needs, as well as those who are unable to work due to disability or other factors.

Old Age Assistance programs may provide a range of benefits, including cash assistance, medical care, and supportive services such as transportation and home-delivered meals. The goal of these programs is to help older adults maintain their independence and quality of life, while also providing them with the support they need to meet their basic needs.
