The group of celestial bodies, including the EARTH, orbiting around and gravitationally bound by the sun. It includes eight planets, one minor planet, and 34 natural satellites, more than 1,000 observed comets, and thousands of lesser bodies known as MINOR PLANETS (asteroids) and METEOROIDS. (From Academic American Encyclopedia, 1983)
An order of mostly marine CRUSTACEA containing more than 5500 species in over 100 families. Like ISOPODA, the other large order in the superorder Peracarida, members are shrimp-like in appearance, have sessile compound eyes, and no carapace. But unlike Isopoda, they possess thoracic gills and their bodies are laterally compressed.

The ash, dust, gases, and lava released by volcanic explosion. The gases are volatile matter composed principally of about 90% water vapor, and carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen. The ash or dust is pyroclastic ejecta and lava is molten extrusive material consisting mainly of magnesium silicate. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 4th ed)
Wnt proteins are a large family of secreted glycoproteins that play essential roles in EMBRYONIC AND FETAL DEVELOPMENT, and tissue maintenance. They bind to FRIZZLED RECEPTORS and act as PARACRINE PROTEIN FACTORS to initiate a variety of SIGNAL TRANSDUCTION PATHWAYS. The canonical Wnt signaling pathway stabilizes the transcriptional coactivator BETA CATENIN.
Wnt Signaling Pathway
A complex signaling pathway whose name is derived from the DROSOPHILA Wg gene, which when mutated results in the wingless phenotype, and the vertebrate INT gene, which is located near integration sites of MOUSE MAMMARY TUMOR VIRUS. The signaling pathway is initiated by the binding of WNT PROTEINS to cells surface WNT RECEPTORS which interact with the AXIN SIGNALING COMPLEX and an array of second messengers that influence the actions of BETA CATENIN.
The intracellular transfer of information (biological activation/inhibition) through a signal pathway. In each signal transduction system, an activation/inhibition signal from a biologically active molecule (hormone, neurotransmitter) is mediated via the coupling of a receptor/enzyme to a second messenger system or to an ion channel. Signal transduction plays an important role in activating cellular functions, cell differentiation, and cell proliferation. Examples of signal transduction systems are the GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID-postsynaptic receptor-calcium ion channel system, the receptor-mediated T-cell activation pathway, and the receptor-mediated activation of phospholipases. Those coupled to membrane depolarization or intracellular release of calcium include the receptor-mediated activation of cytotoxic functions in granulocytes and the synaptic potentiation of protein kinase activation. Some signal transduction pathways may be part of larger signal transduction pathways; for example, protein kinase activation is part of the platelet activation signal pathway.

X-Ray Intensifying Screens
Screens which absorb the energy in the x-ray beam that has penetrated the patient and convert this energy into a light pattern which has as nearly as possible the same information as the original x-ray beam. The more light a screen produces for a given input of x-radiation, the less x-ray exposure and thus shorter exposure time are needed to expose the film. In most film-screen systems, the film is sandwiched between two screens in a cassette so that the emulsion on each side is exposed to the light from its contiguous screen.
The ginseng plant family of the order Apiales, subclass Rosidae, class Magnoliopsida. Leaves are generally alternate, large, and compound. Flowers are five-parted and arranged in compound flat-topped umbels. The fruit is a berry or (rarely) a drupe (a one-seeded fruit). It is well known for plant preparations used as adaptogens (immune support and anti-fatigue).

Topography of the lunar poles from radar interferometry: a survey of cold trap locations. (1/105)Detailed topographic maps of the lunar poles have been obtained by Earth-based radar interferometry with the 3.5-centimeter wavelength Goldstone Solar System Radar. The interferometer provided maps 300 kilometers by 1000 kilometers of both polar regions at 150-meter spatial resolution and 50-meter height resolution. Using ray tracing, these digital elevation models were used to locate regions that are in permanent shadow from solar illumination and may harbor ice deposits. Estimates of the total extent of shadowed areas poleward of 87.5 degrees latitude are 1030 and 2550 square kilometers for the north and south poles, respectively. (+info)
Lunar cycles in diel prey migrations exert a stronger effect on the diving of juveniles than adult Galapagos fur seals. (2/105)In our study of the development of diving in Galapagos fur seals, we analysed changes in diving activity and body mass trends over the lunar cycle. Based on previously observed lunar cycles in colony attendance patterns, we hypothesized a greater impact of prey migrations of deep scattering layer organisms on younger fur seals. Using electronic dive recorders, we determined that seals dived less and deeper on moonlit nights than at new moon, and incurred body mass losses. These changes in foraging over the lunar cycle correlate with the suppression of the vertical migration of prey by lunar light. All effects were more pronounced in juveniles than adult females, with greater relative mass loss during full moon, which must (i) negatively affect long-term juvenile growth rates, (ii) lengthen periods of maternal dependence, and (iii) contribute to the lowest reproductive rate reported for seals. This underlines the importance of studying ontogeny in order to understand life histories, and for determining the susceptibility of animal populations to fluctuations in food availability. (+info)
Iron isotope biosignatures. (3/105)The (56)Fe/(54)Fe of Fe-bearing phases precipitated in sedimentary environments varies by 2.5 per mil (delta(56)Fe values of +0.9 to -1. 6 per mil). In contrast, the (56)Fe/(54)Fe of Fe-bearing phases in igneous rocks from Earth and the moon does not vary measurably (delta(56)Fe = 0.0 +/- 0.3 per mil). Experiments with dissimilatory Fe-reducing bacteria of the genus Shewanella algae grown on a ferrihydrite substrate indicate that the delta(56)Fe of ferrous Fe in solution is isotopically lighter than the ferrihydrite substrate by 1.3 per mil. Therefore, the range in delta(56)Fe values of sedimentary rocks may reflect biogenic fractionation, and the isotopic composition of Fe may be used to trace the distribution of microorganisms in modern and ancient Earth. Explaining the moon illusion. (4/105)An old explanation of the moon illusion holds that various cues place the horizon moon at an effectively greater distance than the elevated moon. Although both moons have the same angular size, the horizon moon must be perceived as larger. More recent explanations hold that differences in accommodation or other factors cause the elevated moon to appear smaller. As a result of this illusory difference in size, the elevated moon appears to be more distant than the horizon moon. These two explanations, both based on the geometry of stereopsis, lead to two diametrically opposed hypotheses. That is, a depth interval at a long distance is associated with a smaller binocular disparity, whereas an equal depth interval at a smaller distance is associated with a larger disparity. We conducted experiments involving artificial moons and confirmed the hypothesis that the horizon moon is at a greater perceptual distance. Moreover, when a moon of constant angular size was moved closer it was also perceived as growing smaller, which is consistent with the older explanation. Although Emmert's law does not predict the size-distance relationship over long distances, we conclude that the horizon moon is perceived as larger because the perceptual system treats it as though it is much farther away. Finally, we observe that recent explanations substitute perceived size for angular size as a cue to distance. Thus, they imply that perceptions cause perceptions. (+info)
Solar wind record on the moon: deciphering presolar from planetary nitrogen. (5/105)Ion microprobe analyses show that solar wind nitrogen associated with solar wind hydrogen implanted in the first tens of nanometers of lunar regolith grains is depleted in 15N by at least 24% relative to terrestrial atmosphere, whereas a nonsolar component associated with deuterium-rich hydrogen, detected in silicon-bearing coatings at the surface of some ilmenite grains, is enriched in 15N. Systematic enrichment of 15N in terrestrial planets and bulk meteorites relative to the protosolar gas cannot be explained by isotopic fractionation in nebular or planetary environments but requires the contribution of 15N-rich compounds to the total nitrogen in planetary materials. Most of these compounds are possibly of an interstellar origin and never equilibrated with the 15N-depleted protosolar nebula. (+info)
Ecology of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in areas of Serra do Mar State Park, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. III. Daily biting rhythms and lunar cycle influence. (6/105)The ecology of mosquito species (Diptera: Culicidae) was studied in areas of the Serra do Mar State Park, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The influence of the lunar cycle and the daily biting rhythms of mosquito populations were analyzed. Systematized biweekly human bait collections were made in a silvatic environment for 24 consecutive months (January 1991 to December 1992). A total of 20,591 specimens of adult mosquitoes belonging to 55 species were collected from 545 catches. Sabethini species were captured exclusively during daylight periods, with the exception of Trichoprosopon digitatum, while members of Anophelinae predominated during nocturnal hours. Members of the subfamily Culicinae that were collected primary during nocturnal periods included Culex nigripalpus, Coquillettidia chrysonotum and Cq. venezuelensis while daytime catches included Psorophora ferox and Ps. albipes. Others members of culicines mosquitoes that were collected during both day and night included: Aedes serratus, Ae. scapularis and Ae. fulvus. Lunar cycles did not appear to influence the daily biting rhythms of most mosquito species in the area, but larger numbers of mosquitoes were collected during the new moon. Ae. scapularis were captured mainly during the full moon. (+info)
The effect of the full moon on general practice consultation rates. (7/105)BACKGROUND: The effect of the full moon on human behaviour, the so-called 'Transylvania hypothesis', has fascinated the public and occupied the mind of researchers for centuries. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to determine whether or not there was any change in general practice consultation patterns around the time of the full moon. METHOD: We analysed data from the fourth national morbidity study of general practice. The data set was split into two groups and analysed separately: consultations on ordinary weekdays and consultations on weekends and bank holidays. The data were split randomly into two equal sets, one for model building and one for model validation. The lunar cycle effect was assumed to be sinusoidal, on the grounds that any effect would be maximal at the time of the full moon and decline to the new moon, following a cosine curve (with a period of 29.54 days, the mean length of a lunar cycle). RESULTS: There was a statistically significant, but small, effect associated with the lunar cycle of 1.8% of the mean value [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.9-2.7%]. This equates to an average difference between the two extremes during the cycle of 3.6%. For this data set, this accounts for 190 (95% CI 95-285) more consultations on days at the peak of the cycle compared with those at the bottom of the cycle, or, put another way, about three consultations per practice. CONCLUSION: We can speculate neither as to what the nature of these moon-related problems may be, nor as to the mechanisms underpinning such behaviour. However, we have confirmed that it does not seem to be related to anxiety and depression. (+info)
Do animals bite more during a full moon? Retrospective observational analysis. (8/105)OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that the incidence of animal bites increases at the time of a full moon. DESIGN: Retrospective observational analysis. SETTING: Accident and emergency department at a general hospital in an English city. SUBJECTS: 1621 consecutive patients, irrespective of age and sex. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Number of patients who attended an accident and emergency department during 1997 to 1999 after being bitten by an animal. The number of bites in each day was compared with the lunar phase in each month. RESULTS: The incidence of animal bites rose significantly at the time of a full moon. With the period of the full moon as the reference period, the incidence rate ratio of the bites for all other periods of the lunar cycle was significantly lower (P <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The full moon is associated with a significant increase in animal bites to humans. (+info)

Full moon financial definition of full moon
Definition of full moon in the Financial Dictionary - by Free online English dictionary and encyclopedia. What is full moon? Meaning of full moon as a finance term. What does full moon mean in finance?
FULL MOON DECREASES SLEEP. Folklore has it that a full moon brings on strange happenings. Indeed, the terms lunatic and lunacy are derived from the Latin word luna which, in turn, refers to the moon. Among the many claims that have been made regarding the power of the full moon to affect human behavior is the claim that it interferes with sleep. However, this assertion has never before been tested by objective scientific study. (On the other hand, many marine animals have been shown to respond to the various phases of the lunar cycle.) Now, a newly published study suggests that humans may also respond to the moons phases, and that sleep may actually be significantly impaired when the moon is full. This new study appears in this current issue of the journal Current Biology.. The data for this clinical research study was collected from a prior sleep study that included 33 adult volunteers. Because this sleep study was conducted in a sleep laboratory where exposure to light (including ...
Wide Awake on a Full Moon | Mooncircles
Heres a lovely indoor Moon practice that begins as you drift off to sleep. Sleep is a neglected feminine art. The researchers all tell us that we need more than what were getting. But researchers speak to us like were logical machines. Were not. Were a chaos or a symphony of energy-especially during Full Moons. Its not unusual to have a little Full Moon insomnia. Many people-especially sensitives-feel like theyre being kept awake by the Moon.. Alas, this is not true. The Moon of course is not just that round orb in the sky, shes the Great Mother. She lives within us always. She lives to nourish, comfort, and soothe-not to keep us awake. She sends us our dreams for goodness sake! With each of her changing phases, she also sends us messages. During her Full Moons she reveals to us the balance (or imbalance) of Sun and Moon energy in our system. If were feeling wide awake, this is telling us theres too much SUN in our system. Theres too much active masculine energy circulating. The sky ...
Moon phase effect on investor psychology and stock trading performance | Emerald Insight
- This article aims to examine how investor moods and aggressiveness differ in their state and influence investor stock market performance associated with the moon phase. The mechanisms and impact of full moon gravity on investor stock trading performance are explored through an experimental approach and econometrics model. , - A time-series quasi-experimental study, using the full moon and new moon time periods, was coupled with a psychometric test of investors behaviours, administered through an online survey, similar to a pre-post experiment. Confirmation of the results was achieved by using an econometric model, adopted from Dichev and Janes. , - This research found that investor psychology is influenced by the full moon, but no effect was recorded during the new moon phase. Confirmed by the paired t-difference test, the small correlation, in addition to the quantitative model, the results show the full moon impacts market behaviour during its orbital phase. Consequently, the authors surmise that

Water in Lunar Highland Regolith. The potential distribution of water in lunar highland regolith near the lunar south pole. Estimates for the mass of water in the regolith hit by the LCROSS impactor are ~5 weight percent [e.g., Colaprete et al. (2010) Science 330, pp. 463-468]. That value corresponds to ~10 volume percent in a highland regolith breccia. If that water was distributed along grain boundaries within the regolith, it could look like the left panel, where the water is highlighted in blue. To better see the potential distribution of water ice, the water along grain boundaries is shown in the right panel without the regolith breccia. To further illustrate that distribution, a magnified view of a small region is shown as an inset. The thin distribution of water around the margins of grains is clearly evident in the inset. For illustration purposes, the Apollo 16 regolith sample 63507,13 was used as a proxy for highland regolith breccias near the lunar south pole. A 500-µm scale bar is ...

12 more moons found orbiting Jupiter
A group of astronomers from the Carnagie Institution for Science announced on Monday that they discovered 12 previously undiscovered moons orbiting Jupiter, including one the institution is calling an oddball.. The moons are not nearly the size of Jupiters largest moons, which are slightly larger than Earths moon in size. Instead, the natural satellites are at most two miles in diameter. Scientists werent intentionally looking for new moons around Jupiter. They were actually looking for large planetary bodies in the outer reaches of the solar system. Jupiter just happened to be in the sky near the search fields where we were looking for extremely distant Solar System objects, so we were serendipitously able to look for new moons around Jupiter while at the same time looking for planets at the fringes of our Solar System, Carnegies Scott Sheppard said.. Nine of the moons among the moons that are in Jupiters outer orbit. These moons orbit in retrograde. Two of the other moons spin in ...
Weird Science: Tidal Locking-Why the Man in the Moon Can Always See You | manoa.hawaii.edu/ExploringOurFluidEarth
Some people see a face in the lunar mare, which is commonly referred to as the man in the moon. Due to the gravitational effect of the earth on the moon, the moon and the earth are tidally locked. This means that it takes the same amount of time for the moon to rotate once about its axis as it takes for the moon to make one orbit around the earth. The moons rotation and orbital period are both just under four weeks. This synchronous (or same) rotation causes one side of the moon (the side with the man in the moon) to always face Earth (SF Fig. 6.7). This is called the near side of the moon. Most of the major moons in our solar system rotate synchronously with their planets.. ...

The game begins with main character inheriting a small amount of money and ramshackle farm covered in weeds. Over the course of the game the player must build a thriving farm, and become a friend of the citizens of Mineral Town. Throughout the game the player must balance between attending to the farm and interacting with other characters to maintain friendships. In order to begin with the story, the player must overcome the first obstacle of reestablishing the farm by getting rid of weeds and planting new crops. Once that is done a time frame of three years to completely rejuvenate the farm begins. Time passes while the player is outdoors, and pauses inside different buildings such as shops or barns and mines. Both the growing of crops and raising of livestock require daily attention and the expenditure of time. Player starts off with an assortment of rudimentary farming tools which can later be upgraded and refined to allow for a more efficient work rate, allowing more work to be done ...
A New Model for the Origin of the Moon | SETI Institute
The leading theory for the origin of the Moon is a giant impact with the young Earth. Recently, the hypothesis has been called into question by measurements that find that the Earth and Moon the same isotopic composition (isotopes of an element have slightly different masses). The isotopes of oxygen and titanium, for example, vary widely in the Solar System and are used to fingerprint different planets and meteorite groups. The data show that the Earth and Moon are isotopic twins, but the original giant impact model predicted that most of the Moon was made from the body that struck Earth, which should have had a different isotopic fingerprint.. Therefore, the original giant impact model has a major problem: it can match the mass of the Moon and the rotation rates of the Earth and Moon, but not the chemistry of the Moon. Today, tides between the Earth and Moon slow Earths rotation and push the Moons orbit further away, but the total angular momentum (see glossary) is conserved. Going back ...

Twelve New Moons Discovered Orbiting Jupiter - SpaceRef
Gareth Williams at the International Astronomical Unions Minor Planet Center used the teams observations to calculate orbits for the newly found moons.. It takes several observations to confirm an object actually orbits around Jupiter, Williams said. So, the whole process took a year.. Nine of the new moons are part of a distant outer swarm of moons that orbit it in the retrograde, or opposite direction of Jupiters spin rotation. These distant retrograde moons are grouped into at least three distinct orbital groupings and are thought to be the remnants of three once-larger parent bodies that broke apart during collisions with asteroids, comets, or other moons. The newly discovered retrograde moons take about two years to orbit Jupiter.. Two of the new discoveries are part of a closer, inner group of moons that orbit in the prograde, or same direction as the planets rotation. These inner prograde moons all have similar orbital distances and angles of inclinations around Jupiter and so are ...
SVS: 2017 Eclipse and the Moons Orbit
Solar eclipses can only occur at New Moon, when the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun. But not every New Moon produces an eclipse. The Moons orbit is slightly tilted, and as seen in this animation, the tilt causes the Moons shadow to miss the Earth during most New Moons-about five out of six, in fact. As the Earth-Moon system orbits the Sun throughout the year, the Moons orbital tilt changes direction relative to the Sun. Sometimes the up side of the orbit is facing the Sun, and sometimes the down side. Twice a year, for about a month, whats facing the Sun is the line dividing the up and down sides. This is the line of nodes, the intersection of the Earth-Moon plane and the ecliptic or Earth-Sun plane. A solar eclipse can only occur at a New Moon that falls within one of these month-long eclipse seasons. Thats when the Moon is close enough to the ecliptic to actually come between the Earth and the Sun. In
science based - How can a moon have an ever-changing face? - Worldbuilding Stack Exchange
Possibly there could be intelligence of some sort on the moon and their activities can make a big visual change in the appearance of large sections of the moon during short periods.. Possibly they are artists trying out various paint patterns to see which make the moon look best.. Perhaps they move countless millions of large vehicles of various colors around on the moon, arranging them in various patterns as part of some sort of dance.. Maybe they are trying to send a message to the natives of the planet and thus making an ever changing series of patterns on the moon.. A century or so ago an astronomer believed that some tiny changes of color he observed on the moon were the results of vast hordes of insects moving around. So possibly on your moon thick areas of vegetation spring up, changing the color of vast regions, and then vast wandering hordes of insects travel toward them, changing the face of the moon as they move. When the insects arrive at the forest or meadow or swamp their color ...

The Moons Influence on Personality | Metaphorical Platypus
In natal astrology, the moon rules over the emotional side of life, childhood, motherhood, security, and the domestic sphere.. The three most important influences in the natal horoscope are the sun, moon, and ascendant (rising sign).. The moon position is critical to interpersonal relationships, because it reflects the inner self that is shown only to those closest. Emotional reactions, motherhood, childhood, and feelings of security and belonging (or lack thereof) are all influenced by this lunar sign.. The Moon Rules over the Emotional Side of Life. The position of the moon provides information about an individuals innermost needs - in other words, what is required to bring contentment, peace, satisfaction, security, and a sense of belonging, as well as how the inner self can best be expressed.. While the sun sign guides actions, reactions are influenced by the moon sign. The moon sign indicates how a person will experience and express feelings, and how she will respond to any stimuli that ...

Indian landing module ready for touchdown on moon surface - Texomashomepage.com
NEW DELHI (AP) - The landing module of Indias unmanned moon mission separated from the orbiter on Monday ahead of its planned touchdown on the moons south polar region this weekend, the space agency said.. All the systems of the orbiter and the lander are healthy, the Indian Space Research Organization said in a statement.. Mondays maneuver removed the lander from the orbiters top, where it had been sitting since the mission took off from southern India on July 22. The module has reached a distance of about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the moons surface, the space agency said.. It will attempt Indias first moon landing on a relatively flat surface on Saturday to study previously discovered water deposits. The roughly $140 million mission is known as Chandrayaan-2, the Sanskrit word for moon craft.. Chandrayaan-1 orbited the moon in 2008 and helped confirm the presence of water. Space agency chairman Dr. K. Sivan has said that landing on the lunar surface involves a lot of technical ...

N2 - Several remote observations have indicated that water ice may be presented in permanently shadowed craters of the Moon. The Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) mission was designed to provide direct evidence (1). On 9 October 2009, a spent Centaur rocket struck the persistently shadowed region within the lunar south pole crater Cabeus, ejecting debris, dust, and vapor. This material was observed by a second shepherding spacecraft, which carried nine instruments, including cameras, spectrometers, and a ...
Daily Galaxy: NASA --Earths Gravitational Tidal Forces Shaping the Moon
In August, 2010, researchers using images from LROs Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) reported the discovery of 14 cliffs known as lobate scarps on the moons surface, in addition to about 70 previously known from the limited high-resolution Apollo Panoramic Camera photographs. Due largely to their random distribution across the surface, the science team concluded that the moon is shrinking. These small faults are typically less than 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) long and only tens of yards or meters high. They are most likely formed by global contraction resulting from cooling of the moons still hot interior. As the interior cools and portions of the liquid outer core solidify, the volume decreases; thus the moon shrinks and the solid crust buckles.. Now, after more than six years in orbit, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) has imaged nearly three-fourths of the lunar surface at high resolution, allowing the discovery of over 3,000 more of these features. These globally distributed faults ...
NASAs orbiting space-broadband probe LADEE beams back Moon snaps • The Register
But the pictures release is important as now LADEE can begin its primary missions: sniffing the chemical composition of the Moons negligible atmosphere, testing out a super-fast space broadband system, and hopefully solving a mystery that has had NASAs boffins baffled for nearly 50 years.. Apollo 17 was NASAs last mission to the Moon and the only one that actually included a geologist on the landing team; Harrison Schmitt. He drew pictures of a mysterious glow from the Moons surface at sunrise, as though the Suns light was being scattered by dust floating free of the lunar surface.. The atmosphere on the lunar surface is primarily made up of argon, helium and sodium, but is one hundred trillionth to that of Earth at sea level - a science lab would consider the atmosphere on the Moon to be a pretty good vacuum. As such, it shouldnt be thick enough to support enough dust particles to cause the sunrise.. Lunar dust has some unusual and rather annoying properties. The Moons surface is ...
Moon - New World Encyclopedia
Recently, the Giant Impact hypothesis has been considered the most plausible scientific hypothesis for the Moons origin, when compared with other hypotheses such as coformation and condensation. The Giant Impact hypothesis holds that the Moon was formed from the ejecta of a collision between a very early, semi-molten Earth and a planet-like object the size of Mars. The material ejected from this impact is thought to have gathered in orbit around Earth and formed the Moon.. This hypothesis is bolstered by two main observations: First, the Moons composition resembles that of the Earths crust, and it has relatively few heavy elements that would have been present had it formed by itself out of the same material as the Earth. Second, radiometric dating indicates that the Moons crust formed between 20 and 30 million years after that of Earth, despite its smallness and associated larger loss of internal heat. In addition, the hypothesis is supported by the observation that the Moon and Earth have ...

Cassini Spacecraft Snaps Pictures of Saturns Geyser-Spouting Moon - 80beats : 80beats
The Cassini spacecraft that has been busily exploring Saturn and its moons swooped to within 30 miles of the tiny moon Enceladus yesterday, and has already begun sending back images of the fissures near the moons south pole. The icy moon, which is about 310 miles wide, has tantalized scientists with geyser-like eruptions of icy water vapor that were first spotted in 2005…. The eruptions produce a halo of frozen water vapor and gas that replenishes Saturns E-ring as Enceladus circles the planet [SPACE.com].. The Cassini took images of the fissures, which scientists call the moons tiger stripes, in the infrared spectrum as well, to gain further information about the temperatures in the vents; previous studies had shown temperatures there can reach a relatively balmy -135 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 200 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the rest of the moon. While the material sprayed out of the fissures consists of frozen water vapor, scientists disagree on whether an internal ocean of ...
Full moonlight-induced circadian clock entrainment in Coffea arabica | BMC Plant Biology | Full Text
It is now well documented that moonlight affects the life cycle of invertebrates, birds, reptiles, and mammals. The lunisolar tide is also well-known to alter plant growth and development. However, although plants are known to be very photosensitive, few studies have been undertaken to explore the effect of moonlight on plant physiology. Here for the first time we report a massive transcriptional modification in Coffea arabica genes under full moonlight conditions, particularly at full moon zenith and 3 h later. Among the 3387 deregulated genes found in our study, the main core clock genes were affected. Moonlight also negatively influenced many genes involved in photosynthesis, chlorophyll biosynthesis and chloroplast machinery at the end of the night, suggesting that the full moon has a negative effect on primary photosynthetic machinery at dawn. Moreover, full moonlight promotes the transcription of major rhythmic redox genes and many heat shock proteins, suggesting that moonlight is perceived as
Jupiters Moons Orbiter - Universe Galaxies And Stars Section.
Scientists are keen to explore Europa, one of Jupiters moons, because it seems to have vast oceans of liquid water which could be a home for life. New analysis of the surface has found the presence of Hydrogen peroxide and strong acids which could kill life. The scientists who discovered it are unsure if these corrosive chemicals are just a light dusting on the surface of the moon, or a large component of its ice-covered oceans. Another problem with the search for life is the discovery that the ice might be much thicker than previously thought - perhaps as thick as 10 to 30 km - which would make exploring very difficult.. Far from being a haven of ice and water and an ideal spot for the search for alien life, Jupiters Moon Europa may be a corrosive hotbed of acid and peroxide. That is the conclusion of researchers who met last week to prepare for NASAs proposed Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter, an ambitious mission to study Jupiters moons.. Almost all the information we have about Europa comes from ...

Radar Reveals Two Moons Orbiting Asteroid Florence - SpaceRef
Radar images of asteroid 3122 Florence obtained at the 70-meter antenna at NASAs Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex between August 29 and September 1 have revealed that the asteroid has two small moons.. It also confirmed that main asteroid Florence is about 4.5 km (2.8 miles) in size. Florence is only the third triple asteroid known in the near-Earth population out of more than 16,400 that have been discovered to date. All three near-Earth asteroid triples have been discovered with radar observations and Florence is the first seen since two moons were discovered around asteroid 1994 CC in June 2009.. Animated sequence of radar images of asteroid Florence obtained on Sep. 1, 2017 using the 70-m antenna at the Goldstone Deep Space Communications complex.. The sizes of the two moons are not yet well known, but they are probably between 100 - 300 meters (300-1000 feet) across. The times required for each moon to revolve around Florence are also not yet known precisely but appear to be ...

Atmosphere of Titan, Saturns Moon - Windows to the Universe
Titan is the only moon in our Solar System with a significant atmosphere. Titans atmosphere consists mostly of nitrogen, and is so thick that the atmospheric pressure at the moons surface is about 60% greater than Earths atmospheric pressure.. Titans atmosphere also has a significant amount of methane. Bombardment of the methane by solar ultraviolet radiation has produced trace amounts of numerous other hydrocarbons. These organic molecules create several layers of smog-like haze in the moons atmosphere, obscuring views of Titans surface.. The Cassini spacecraft has observed clouds in Titans atmosphere near the moons poles. Temperatures are so cold (-178 C, -288 F) on Titan that methane is a liquid at the surface. Scientists believe that methane and ethane may fall as rain and snow from the clouds in Titans atmosphere onto its frigid surface. This image shows the predicted structure of Titans atmosphere. New results from the Huygens probe will likely revise our knowledge of the ...
Hubble Views Three Moons Transiting the Face of Jupiter
Taken with Hubbles Wide Field Camera 3 in visible light, these new images capture the rare occurrence of three of Jupiters largest moons (Europa, Callisto, and Io) racing across the banded face of the gas-giant planet.. These so-called Galilean moons, named after the 17th century scientist Galileo Galilei, who discovered them with a telescope, complete orbits around Jupiter with durations ranging from 2 days to 17 days. They can commonly be seen transiting the face of Jupiter and casting shadows onto its cloud tops. However, seeing three moons transiting the face of Jupiter at the same time is rare, occurring only once or twice a decade.. The Hubble image on the left shows the beginning of the event, which took place on January 24, 2015. From left to right, the moons Callisto and Io are above Jupiters cloud tops. The shadows from Europa, Callisto, and Io are strung out from left to right. Europa is not visible in this image.. Near the end of the event, approximately 42 minutes later ...

The Astrology of Hurricanes and Noreasters: Irene, Snowtober and Frankenstorm | Astrology Explored
Astrology Explored). The Hunters Moon, the full moon of in the sign of Taurus, brings more than its signature orange glow to the moon. This year, Hurricane Sandy, dubbed the Frankenstorm, a 900 mile mega storm travels up the east cost, kicking up storm surge, flooding areas along the eastern seaboard of the United States. The storm is due to hit land, somewhere around Atlantic City, New Jersey sometime Monday night. With winds reaching up to 76 miles per hours, weather forecasters are looking forward to landfall to weaken the hurricane force winds. However the worst effects may yet be felt with the full moon high tide threatening to bring record high storm surges in coastal areas. Power outages are widespread and expected to grow through out the night. Weather forecasters have worked overtime to make predictions on the severity of the storm. Comparisons are being made to Hurricane Irene in terms of size and the speed and force of the winds. What does astrology have to say about these ...
Eclipsing a Moon | NASA Solar System Exploration
Saturns moon Enceladus is partially eclipsed by the planet in this Cassini spacecraft view which also features the moon Titan in the distance. Cassini flew by Enceladus, shown in the center of the view, at a distance of about 16,000 miles (26,000 kilometers). The terminator between the day and night sides of Enceladus (313 miles, or 504 kilometers across) can be seen on the far left of the moon, while the shadow of the eclipsing planet runs across the bottom. Titan (3,200 miles, or 5,150 kilometers across) is in the bottom right of this image and is about 684,000 miles (1.1 million kilometers) from the spacecraft. See Titan in Eclipse to see Titan eclipsed by the planet. This view looks toward the Saturn-facing sides of Enceladus and Titan. North is up. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera on Oct. 1, 2011. The view was obtained at a Sun-Enceladus-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 29 degrees. Scale in the original image was 2 miles (3 kilometers) per pixel

Cassini Probe Detects a Wispy Oxygen Atmosphere on Saturns Moon Rhea - 80beats : 80beats
When the news comes from Saturns moons, the source is typically Titan-with its hazy atmosphere and frigid surface lakes of methane-or Enceladus-with its plumes of water ice. Last week, however, word came that Rhea, the second-largest Saturnian satellite, has some surprises of its own.. In Fridays edition of Science, a study by Ben Teolis and colleagues confirmed that during a pass of the moon in March, when the ever-reliable Cassini spacecraft cruised over Rheas pole at an altitude of just 60 miles, it directly sampled tiny amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide there.. This really is the first time that weve seen oxygen directly in the atmosphere of another world, said Andrew Coates, at UCLs Mullard Space Science Laboratory, a co-author of the study. [The Guardian]. Other atmospheres known to exist throughout the solar system, like that of Titan as well as Jupiters moons Europa and Ganymede, were discovered and studied from afar. Rheas, however, is so thin that this direct pass through ...
Some Scientists Deem Saturn Moon Titan Dry - Redorbit
LOS ANGELES -- Scientists peering through a ground-based telescope say the surface of Saturns planet-sized moon Titan appears dry and not awash in oceans of liquid hydrocarbons as is commonly believed. Titan - one of two moons in the solar system known to have a significant atmosphere - has long baffled scientists because its surrounded by a thick blanket of nitrogen and methane. Scientists have speculated that the atmospheric methane probably came from seas of liquid methane and ethane. But telescopes and orbiting spacecraft have yet to turn up evidence of a global ocean of methane on Titan. In the latest study, scientists using the Keck II telescope in Hawaii failed to see any reflections of sunlight that would indicate a body of liquid on the frozen moon during several viewings in 2003 and 2004, said lead researcher Robert West of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Results appear in Thursdays issue of the journal Nature. The latest Earth-based observations were focused on Titans ...
Subsurface ocean discovered on Saturns moon Dione | Science | AAAS
reports. (Three ocean worlds orbit Jupiter, three orbit Saturn, and Pluto could also belong to the club.) The discovery is thanks to gravity data from a flyby by NASAs Cassini spacecraft, which also discovered the subsurface oceans of two others of Saturns moons, Titan and Enceladus. The researchers who reported this finding in Geophysical Research Letters say Diones ocean has existed since the moons origin, which increases the chances that microbial life is thriving in its waters.. *Correction, 6 October, 4:02 p.m.: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Saturn has seven moons. It also incorrectly stated that a subsurface ocean was in definite existence on Dione. The article has been corrected. ...
The Large Picture Blog: Quadruple Saturn Moon Transit Snapped by Hubble
Saturns comparatively paper-thin rings are tilted edge on to Earth every 15 years. Because the orbits of Saturns major satellites are in the ring plane, too, this alignment gives astronomers a rare opportunity to capture a truly spectacular parade of celestial bodies crossing the face of Saturn. Leading the parade is Saturns giant moon Titan - larger than the planet Mercury. The frigid moons thick nitrogen atmosphere is tinted orange with the smoggy byproducts of sunlight interacting with methane and nitrogen. Several of the much smaller icy moons that are closer in to the planet line up along the upper edge of the rings. Hubbles exquisite sharpness also reveals Saturns banded cloud structure. -- HubbleSite ...
Russia calls investigation into whether US moon landings happened
The increasingly tense relationship between the United States and Russia might be about to face a new challenge: a Russian investigation into American moon landings.. In an op-ed published by Russian newspaper Izvestia, Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the governments official Investigative Committee, argued that such an investigation could reveal new insights into the historical space journeys.. According to a translation by the Moscow Times, Markin would support an inquiry into the disappearance of original footage from the first moon landing in 1969 and the whereabouts of lunar rock, which was brought back to Earth during several missions.. We are not contending that they did not fly [to the moon], and simply made a film about it. But all of these scientific - or perhaps cultural - artifacts are part of the legacy of humanity, and their disappearance without a trace is our common loss. An investigation will reveal what happened, Markin wrote, according to the Moscow Times ...
Moon jellyfish - Dallas World Aquarium
Description: Ninety-five percent or more of the weight of the Moon jellyfish is water; it has no brain, eyes or heart. The whitish color of its bell or moon-shaped dome often shows shades of blue, pink or purple - color believed to depend on its diet. The four horseshoe-shaped reproductive organs can be seen in the middle of its dome. Fringe-like tentacles are around the dome. The tentacles are lined with stinging cells (nematocysts) that can be used to sting prey. The jellyfish is also coated with a sticky mucous that collects prey. The feeding tube is short and stout, with four long oral arms with frilly margins around the mouth. They move about and stay at the top by pulsations of the bell.. Size: The Moon jellyfish ranges between 2-15 inches (5-38 cm) in diameter, with average diameter being about seven inches (17.8 cm) and three inches (7.6 cm) tall.. Behavior: Moon jellyfish tend to live alone but water currents and wind may tend to steer them in groups called blooms. They swim ...

Detailed images from Jupiter moon Europa point to slush below surface The latest, most detailed pictures of the Jupiter moon Europa lend more support to the theory that slush or even liquid water lurks beneath the moons surface. Those pictures were presented and discussed by scientists from Brown University and NASA during a press briefing today on the Brown campus.. PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The most detailed images ever taken of the Jupiter moon Europa show more evidence for slush beneath the bright moons icy surface, say planetary scientists from Brown University and NASA who have analyzed data recently transmitted from the Galileo spacecraft.. Slightly smaller than Earths moon but many times brighter, Europas icy surface has intrigued scientists ever since the Voyager spacecraft missions flew through the Jupiter system in 1979. At -260° F, the moons surface temperature could deep-freeze an ocean over several million years, but some scientists are beginning to think that warmth from a tidal ...

Today is June 8, 2017 and I just finished listening to the Comey Hearing. This is just the beginning of the investigation. Only time will tell how it all turns out. This hearing is just before the full moon which is on June 9, 2017. This is starting out to be a very interesting full moon. It will activate more intense energy because Mars will be opposing Pluto by sign all month. Mars is now in Cancer and Pluto is in Capricorn. Cancer rules the home, family, food, and comfort, and Pluto rules the governments of the world. It is also considered the transformer, or the God of the Underworld. This is why all the hidden information that we have not been aware of is coming to the surface for all to see. This corruption has been going on for a very long period of time. ...

Explanation: Four moons are visible on the featured image -- can you find them all? First -- and farthest in the background -- is Titan, the largest moon of Saturn and one of the larger moons in the Solar System. The dark feature across the top of this perpetually cloudy world is the north polar hood. The next most obvious moon is bright Dione, visible in the foreground, complete with craters and long ice cliffs. Jutting in from the left are several of Saturns expansive rings, including Saturns A ring featuring the dark Encke Gap. On the far right, just outside the rings, is Pandora, a moon only 80-kilometers across that helps shepherd Saturns F ring. The fourth moon? If you look closely inside Saturns rings, in the Encke Gap, you will find a speck that is actually Pan. Although one of Saturns smallest moons at 35-kilometers across, Pan is massive enough to help keep the Encke gap relatively free of ring particles. After more than a decade of exploration and discovery, the Cassini ...

The existence of a relationship between two variables DOES NOT mean that one variable causes the other variable. For example, if you looked for a relationship between the number of points scored by a basketball team and the number of books checked out of a library on different days, you might find a significant relationship. This doesnt mean that the score of basketball games causes people to check out library books or that checking out library books causes the basketball team to score more points. The reason why these two activities vary in a similar fashion is completely unknown and untested. It just happens that the two measurements vary in a related fashion.. ...
Full Moon in Scorpio: Astrology of 5/15 - 5/21 - Monarch Astrology
The state of mind and body that blocks any awareness of the presence of greater being inevitably produces a special kind of suffering. It is this experiencing of this anguish that forces us to take stock of our life attitudes. This taking stock, if honestly carried out, brings us to so great a pitch of desolation that it forces us to the point where we can perceive, sense, and heed the call of our true essence towards which we now feel driven. If, in some propitious hour, we have been given this experience of Being, and if, through the failures of our world-ego and the suffering that results from them we have been brought to the great turning point, then at that moment we can find ourselves on the threshold of something new. Now without fail we just open ourselves to the mysterious, numinous content of moods and impulses which we can neither understand nor explain, still less translate into concepts, but in which we can, nevertheless, unmistakably sense something from beyond this world calling ...

Say what? How is Mercury, Jupiter etc. involved? The Moon crosses Earths shadow, thats it. Mercury has nothing to do with making the Moon enter the shadow, its pure orbital mechanics*. Oh, wait a minute; theres a hard core grand cross here is there. Hmmm, well, for some definition of cross that means not very much like a cross at all (see the diagrams above). You would expect that if Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Pluto are involved then you might expect that if you drew a line through the Sun, Earth and the Moon it should intersect some of these objects. Well, if you draw a line through Earth/Sun/Moon it, ummm, goes nowhere near these planets (see the diagrams above). Mercury and Pluto do align in the sense that they will be almost directly opposite each other as seen from earth, but on the 27th. On the 26th Mercury is over 2 degrees from the Earth/Sun/Moon axis, and Pluto is over 5 degrees from the Earth/Sun/moon axis ...

Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is a U.S. National Monument and national preserve in the Snake River Plain in central Idaho. It is along US 20 (concurrent with US 93 and US 26), between the small towns of Arco and Carey, at an average elevation of 5,900 feet (1,800 m) above sea level. The protected areas features are volcanic and represent one of the best-preserved flood basalt areas in the continental United States. The Monument was established on May 2, 1924. In November 2000, a presidential proclamation by President Clinton greatly expanded the Monument area. The National Park Service portions of the expanded Monument were designated as Craters of the Moon National Preserve in August 2002. It lies in parts of Blaine, Butte, Lincoln, Minidoka, and Power counties. The area is managed cooperatively by the National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The Monument and Preserve encompass three major lava fields and about 400 square miles (1,000 km2) of ...
Neptune at Opposition
Like commuters on a freeway, planets and moons face the constant threat of collision -- not with each other, but with the countless comets and asteroids that litter the solar system. A collision between Earth and an asteroid may have wiped out the dinosaurs, for example.. A moon orbiting the planet Neptune may have suffered an even more traumatic collision -- one that blasted the moon to bits. All thats left of it is a lumpy ring around Neptune.. Neptune actually has several rings. Unlike the brilliant rings of Saturn, though, theyre darker than chimney soot. They consist of small particles of rock and ice.. The most interesting is called the Adams ring. Its the farthest from the planet itself, and it consists of several clumps of material connected by a thin band of dust.. Its possible that the ring formed when a comet slammed into a small, rocky moon. The collision pulverized the moon, and the debris spread out to form a ring.. Although the gravity of Neptune and one of its moons are ...
The Stochastic Scientist: Quick and easy star measurement
Artists concept of an exoplanet and its moon transiting a sun-like star. Such a system could be used to directly weigh the star. Credit: David A. Aguilar (CfA). David Kipping, an astronomer at University College London has devised a new way to accurately measure stars. All it takes is a transiting planet with its own moon, and Keplers laws of motion.. Many exoplanets (planets that orbit stars other than our sun) have been found by using the transit method. Briefly, the planet is directly observed passing in front of its star. If that planet also has a moon, astronomers have the three data points they need to figure out the mass of the star. They can directly measure the orbital periods (time it takes to complete an orbit) of the moon and planet, the size of those orbits relative to the star, and the size of the moon and planet themselves relative to the star. Taken together, these data can be used to determine the size of the star. You need all three objects (star, planet and moon) for this ...

More Moon and Jupiter | StarDate Online
The crescent Moon and the planet Jupiter stage a nice encounter in the western sky this evening. Jupiter is below the Moon, and looks like a brilliant star. If you look carefully, you might notice a little color in Jupiter -- a hint of cream or ivory. The color comes from globe-encircling bands of clouds atop the giant planets atmosphere. The clouds are colored shades of white, tan, brown, and even orange by ammonia, sulfur, and other chemical compounds.
NASAs Intelligent Underwater Drones could Explore Jupiters Moon Europa
NASA scientists are developing artificial intelligence for underwater drones that could be used to understand Earths marine environments as well as track signs of life below the surface of icy oceans believed to exist on Jupiters moon Europa.. Get the Free Tracker App to find a Nintendo Switch in Stock. While satellites can study the ocean surface, their signals cannot penetrate the water and therefore robotic submersibles have become critical tools for ocean research.. Autonomous drones are important for ocean research, but todays drones dont make decisions on the fly, said Steve Chien, who leads the Artificial Intelligence Group at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California.. In order to study unpredictable ocean phenomena, we need to develop submersibles that can navigate and make decisions on their own, and in real-time. Doing so would help us understand our own oceans -- and maybe those on other planets, Chien said in a NASA statement.. If confirmed, the oceans on moons ...

Dont forget the moon - Page 2 - General Observing and Astronomy - Cloudy Nights
Page 2 of 2 - Dont forget the moon - posted in General Observing and Astronomy: The view of Sinus Iridum around its dawn, when the sunlit Jura Mountains extend out into the darkness far beyond the terminator, always elicits a Wow! from passersby on the sidewalk. Allergy-friendly Taste Buds: Molly Moons Ice Cream
Sometimes I feel sorry for my casein (milk protein) intolerant kids when I think of the blizzards, sundaes and frozen yogurts they have yet to devour. A place like Molly Moons makes it way easier to swallow. They had two vegan flavors at the Wallingford location. Strawberry Rhubarb sorbet and Vegan Coconut Chunk. The strawberry rhubarb was tangy in true rhubarb fashion. The Vegan Coconut Chunk reminded me of a blizzard. It had creamy coconut ice cream with shavings of coconut and chunks of Theos chocolate. It was solid like real ice cream and was packed full of morsels. I wish they had more flavors, but for what they have I need to give them some huge kudos. It was a delightful night out for dessert with the family, all because this place kept people like you and I in mind when coming up with decadent flavors. Id highly recommend it. They even have a new cookbook out! To find out more about Molly Moons go here ...

Tilt of uranus and its moons | Physics Forums - The Fusion of Science and Community
The main point of contention for me is that even if Uranus moons were splintered off of some larger object post-collison, it still wouldnt explain their rotations. Yes, its acceptable that a collision could knock Uranus on its side, but if the other object shattered, where in the laws of physics does it say that the peices of such an object would than follow the same, albeit strange, rotation? Im just not convinced... Furthermore, I cant seem to find any information about the rotations of the moons anywhere. Not online (at least not from credible sources) and not in texts. If anyone has some solid information, Id love to hear it ...
