The consumption of a high-fat meal can induce postprandial lipemia and endothelial dysfunction. The authors assessed the impact of age and physical activity on metabolic and vascular outcomes following meal consumption in healthy adults. The authors recruited four groups: younger active (age 22.1 ± 1.4 years; n = 9), younger inactive (age 22.6 ± 3.7 years; n = 8), older active (age 68.4 ± 7.7 years; n = 8), and older inactive (age 67.7 ± 7.2 years; n = 7). The metabolic outcomes were measured at the baseline and hourly for 6 hr post high-fat meal consumption (12 kcal/kg; 63% fat). Flow-mediated dilation was measured at the baseline, 2 hr, and 4 hr postmeal. The total area under the curve for triglycerides was significantly lower in the more active groups, but did not differ based on age (younger active = 6.5 ± 1.4 mmol/L × 6 hr, younger inactive = 11.7 ± 4.8, older active = 6.8 ± 2.7, older inactive = 12.1 ± 1.7; p = .0004). After adjusting for artery diameter, flow-mediated dilation ...

Earlier this month the projections were for year-over-year increases of 4.5 and 4.6 percent, respectively. With only one month remaining in the marketing year, it appears that the domestic crush will exceed the USDA projection by 10 to 15 million bushels ...

PURPOSE: Since relatively little research is available to assess how strategies that differentially time meal consumption relative to exercise influence the degree of postprandial lipemia (PPL), the goal of this study was to compare postprandial responses to a standardized high fat meal consumed alone (M) versus the same meal consumed in conjunction with exercise (60% of VO2max for 50 min) performed either immediately prior to (EM) or two hours after (ME) meal ingestion.. METHODS: Twelve young, healthy male volunteers performed the three trials in random order. Blood samples were drawn after fasting and 1, 3, 5 and 7 hours after the test meal to determine plasma concentrations of triglycerides (TG), glucose and insulin. Blood was also obtained after exercise for the EM trial.. RESULTS: The area under the curve (AUC) for TG was 33% lower (p,0.05) for the EM trial in comparison to M, but no difference was detected between ME and M. The glucose AUC for M was significantly (p,0.05) higher for M than ...

What is most important about family mealtime is the conversations that can happen and connections that can be made. Typically, teens are spending less time with family and more time with peers, so family mealtime is a natural time to be together. Although it may be easier to establish family meals when children are younger, parents of teens should not give up on the idea if they have not had family meals in the past. The good news in the CASA survey was that among teens who reported infrequent dinners, 60% said they would like to have dinner with parents more often.. In a survey with teens and parents, CASA also explored what happens in the parent-teen relationship during family dinners. Teens who had frequent family dinners were more likely to report that they talked to their parents about day-to-day experiences compared to those teens who had infrequent family dinners. In addition, three-quarters of teens (75%) said they talk to their parents about whats going on in their lives at dinner, and ...

However, fasting is really a discipline, you should not just jump into it. Skipping a meal is not really fasting. Skipping a meal sometimes just happens, but fasting is planned with purpose. I recommend preparing at least 3 days before you actually stop eating, by eating increasing less raw foods, sprouts, juices, and broths, then fasting only one day and taking three days coming back off the fast by steadily increasing with the same types of foods. Next time trying 2 days, then 3. The third day is usually the most uncomfortable. If you feel confident with fasting 3 days then I would go to 5 days. After that you pretty much can do it for how long you wish. Around the 5th to 7th day, you usually feel pretty good and you dont feel a desire for food. I am talking here about a water only fast. If you do a fresh juice fast, then the discomforts that go with fasting are minimized. I also do juice fasts when I would like to fast, but life is demanding of me at the time. Juice fasting is a good way to ...

This prospective, multicenter, randomized clinical trial compared the efficacy and safety of a daily dose of glargine plus corrective doses with glulisine before meals against a standard basal-bolus regimen and SSI in general medical and surgical patients with T2D. We observed that treatment with basal plus and basal-bolus regimens resulted in similar improvements in glycemic control, and both regimens resulted in better glycemic control and in a lower number of treatment failures than did SSI treatment.. The association between hyperglycemia and increased risk of hospital complications is well established in both ICU and non-ICU patients (3,4,6,8,21-23). Recent clinical trials have also shown treatment with a basal-bolus regimen to be superior to SSI alone in the management of patients with T2D. The RABBIT 2 medical trial (9) reported that a BG target of ,140 mg/dL was achieved in two-thirds of patients treated with a basal-bolus regimen, whereas only one-third of those treated with SSI ...
Previous studies (Munsters & Saris, 2012; Smeets & Westerterp-Plantenga, 2008; Stote et al., 2007) on the relationship between meal frequency, body composition, and appetite have targeted sedentary or obese individuals. These studies were conducted using energy-balanced conditions for maintaining BW. Almost all these studies were short in duration, ranging from one to several days. Long-term dietary intervention studies have not been conducted, even on the general population. A very limited intervention study by Iwao et al. (1996) used a hypocaloric diet for weight loss in boxers. However, Schoenfeld et al. (2015) meta-analysis found a lack of significant impact of higher versus lower meal frequencies after sensitivity analysis on weight loss. Contrastingly, this study focused on the influence of meal frequency in athletes during weight gain. The diets were carefully monitored to maintain a positive EB, and the intervention period was much longer than in previous studies. Moreover, despite the ...

Some people with diabetes use a program called the exchange meal plan as a guide for what they eat each day. The exchange meal plan is really useful for people with diabetes who are overweight or who need to pay close attention to the balance of calories and nutrients they eat each day.. For this meal plan, foods are divided into six groups: starch, fruit, milk, fat, vegetable, and meat. The plan sets a serving size (amount) for foods in each group. And each serving has a similar amount of calories, protein, carbohydrate, and fat. This allows a person some flexibility in planning meals because they can exchange, or substitute, choices from a food list. The number of servings from each food group recommended for each meal and snack is based on the total number of calories that the person needs each day.. The other two types of meal plans help make sure that the amount of carbohydrates that a persons eating matches up with the insulin or other diabetes medicines he or she is taking. Focusing on ...
