A class of non-sedating drugs that bind to but do not activate histamine receptors (DRUG INVERSE AGONISM), thereby blocking the actions of histamine or histamine agonists. These antihistamines represent a heterogenous group of compounds with differing chemical structures, adverse effects, distribution, and metabolism. Compared to the early (first generation) antihistamines, these non-sedating antihistamines have greater receptor specificity, lower penetration of BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER, and are less likely to cause drowsiness or psychomotor impairment.

Electrophysiological and behavioral analysis of lip touch as a component of the food stimulus in the snail Lymnaea. (1/439)

Electrophysiological and video recording methods were used to investigate the function of lip touch in feeding ingestion behavior of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis. Although this stimulus was used successfully as a conditioning stimulus (CS) in appetitive learning experiments, the detailed role of lip touch as a component of the sensory stimulus provided by food in unconditioned feeding behavior was never ascertained. Synaptic responses to lip touch in identified feeding motoneurons, central pattern generator interneurons, and modulatory interneurons were recorded by intracellular electrodes in a semi-intact preparation. We showed that touch evoked a complex but characteristic sequence of synaptic inputs on each neuron type. Touch never simply activated feeding cycles but provided different types of synaptic input, determined by the feeding phase in which the neuron was normally active in the rhythmic feeding cycle. The tactile stimulus evoked mainly inhibitory synaptic inputs in protraction-phase neurons and excitation in rasp-phase neurons. Swallow-phase neurons were also excited after some delay, suggesting that touch first reinforces the rasp then swallow phase. Video analysis of freely feeding animals demonstrated that during normal ingestion of a solid food flake the food is drawn across the lips throughout the rasp phase and swallow phase and therefore provides a tactile stimulus during both these retraction phases of the feeding cycle. The tactile component of the food stimulus is strongest during the rasp phase when the lips are actively pressed onto the substrate that is being moved across them by the radula. By using a semi-intact preparation we demonstrated that application of touch to the lips during the rasp phase of a sucrose-driven fictive feeding rhythm increases both the regularity and frequency of rasp-phase motoneuron firing compared with sucrose applied alone.  (+info)

Interarticulator programming in VCV sequences: lip and tongue movements. (2/439)

This study examined the temporal phasing of tongue and lip movements in vowel-consonant-vowel sequences where the consonant is a bilabial stop consonant /p, b/ and the vowels one of /i, a, u/; only asymmetrical vowel contexts were included in the analysis. Four subjects participated. Articulatory movements were recorded using a magnetometer system. The onset of the tongue movement from the first to the second vowel almost always occurred before the oral closure. Most of the tongue movement trajectory from the first to the second vowel took place during the oral closure for the stop. For all subjects, the onset of the tongue movement occurred earlier with respect to the onset of the lip closing movement as the tongue movement trajectory increased. The influence of consonant voicing and vowel context on interarticulator timing and tongue movement kinematics varied across subjects. Overall, the results are compatible with the hypothesis that there is a temporal window before the oral closure for the stop during which the tongue movement can start. A very early onset of the tongue movement relative to the stop closure together with an extensive movement before the closure would most likely produce an extra vowel sound before the closure.  (+info)

Expression of mitogen activated protein kinases in labial salivary glands of patients with Sjogren's syndrome. (3/439)

OBJECTIVE: The expression of CD40 and CD40 ligand (CD40L) in mononuclear cells (MNCs) infiltrating the salivary glands of patients with Sjogren's syndrome (SS) has recently been reported. This study determined the expression of mitogen activated protein kinase (MAP kinase) superfamilies, which act as downstream effector molecules of CD40, in MNCs infiltrating labial salivary tissues in SS patients. METHODS: Six HTLV-I seronegative SS patients and 10 HTLV-I seropositive patients including five HTLV-I associated myelopathy (HAM) patients were examined. The expression of MAP kinase superfamilies in labial salivary glands was examined by immunohistochemistry containing the mirror section technique. RESULTS: Both active forms of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 were found in salivary infiltrating MNCs of SS patients. Only minimal expression of the active form of extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK) was observed in these tissues, however, co-expression of active JNK and active p38 was confirmed by the mirror section technique. Furthermore, these protein kinases were co-expressed in CD40(+) MNCs. No difference in expression levels of active JNK and p38 was found in patients who were positive or negative for anti-HTLV-I antibody. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that JNK and p38, but not ERK, function as downstream effector molecules of CD40 in salivary infiltrating MNCs in SS patients, and suggest that these molecules may be involved in the pathological process of chronic sialadenitis in SS.  (+info)

Low-intensity laser therapy is an effective treatment for recurrent herpes simplex infection. Results from a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study. (4/439)

Recurrent infection with herpes simplex virus is a common disease. Recently, alternative therapies have been introduced. Among those, low-intensity laser therapy mainly used for the acceleration of wound healing and in pain therapy has previously been shown to be of benefit in herpes zoster infections. In this study we evaluated the influence of low-intensity laser therapy (wavelength 690 nm, intensity: 80 mW per cm2, dose: 48 J per cm2) in 50 patients with recurrent perioral herpes simplex infection (at least once per month for more than 6 mo) in a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial design. Patients in the laser group received daily irradiations for 2 wk, whereas patients in the placebo group were sham-irradiated. After completion of the laser/sham treatment, patients were asked to return to the Department of Dermatology, University of Vienna Medical School at the time of recurrence. All except two patients completed the study and were monitored for 52 wk. The median recurrence-free interval in the laser-treated group was 37.5 wk (range: 2-52 wk) and in the placebo group 3 wk (range: 1-20 wk). This difference was found to be statistically significant (p < 0.0001; Wilcoxon's Rank Sum Test). In conclusion, we demonstrated that a total of 10 irradiations with low-intensity laser therapy significantly lowers the incidence of local recurrence of herpes simplex infection. Since this athermic phototherapeutic modality represents a safe, noninvasive treatment, it might be considered as an alternative to established therapeutic regimens in this indication.  (+info)

Functional roles played by the sympathetic supply to lip blood vessels in the cat. (5/439)

In the anesthetized cat we used laser-Doppler flowmetry to investigate the part played by cervical superior sympathetic trunk (CST) fibers in the control of blood vessels in an orofacial area (the lower lip). The blood flow increase (antidromic vasodilatation) elicited by inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) stimulation was not affected by ongoing repetitive CST stimulation over the frequency range examined (0.2-10 Hz), although reflex parasympathetic vasodilatation was attenuated. The vasoconstrictor responses elicited by IAN stimulation in some preparations were reduced in a frequency-dependent manner (at 0.2-1 Hz) during ongoing CST stimulation (and replaced by vasodilator responses). The vasoconstrictor response evoked directly by brief CST stimulation was attenuated, but not transformed to a vasodilator response, by ongoing CST stimulation. Thus in the cat lower lip 1) sympathetic stimulation attenuated one type of vasodilator response (parasympathetic-mediated vasodilatation), but not another (antidromic vasodilatation), and 2) ongoing sympathetic (CST) stimulation at low frequencies (<1 Hz) prevented further sympathetic-mediated vasoconstriction.  (+info)

Role of thalamic axons in the expression of H-2Z1, a mouse somatosensory cortex specific marker. (6/439)

In the H-2Z1 mouse line, postnatal expression of the lacZ containing transgene in the cerebral cortex is restricted to layer IV neurons of the somatosensory area. We have used H-2Z1 embryos in previous heterotopic transplantation experiments to investigate the chronology of determination of areal identity. From the onset of neurogenesis, the cortex was regionalized in domains fated to express or not the somatosensory area-specific transgene. Determination occured 1 day later. In the present study, we show that, in vivo, H-2Z1 expression coincides with invasion of the cortical plate by thalamic afferents. We therefore investigated the role of thalamic innervation in the onset of H-2Z1 expression. For this purpose, we examined the pattern of H-2Z1 expression in perinatal cortical explant, in reeler mutant and MaoA deficient mice, or in animals which had received neonatal lesions affecting the somatosensory cortex or the thalamocortical projection. We found that, around birth, a switch occurs in the control of H-2Z1 expression: whereas H-2Z1 expression developed autonomously in embryonic parietal cortex in the absence of thalamic fibers, a transient requirement for a thalamic axon derived signal was observed postnatally. This property has interesting implications for the plasticity of cortical areas in development and evolution.  (+info)

A preliminary gene map for the Van der Woude syndrome critical region derived from 900 kb of genomic sequence at 1q32-q41. (7/439)

Van der Woude syndrome (VWS) is a common form of syndromic cleft lip and palate and accounts for approximately 2% of all cleft lip and palate cases. Distinguishing characteristics include cleft lip with or without cleft palate, isolated cleft palate, bilateral lip pits, hypodontia, normal intelligence, and an autosomal-dominant mode of transmission with a high degree of penetrance. Previously, the VWS locus was mapped to a 1.6-cM region in 1q32-q41 between D1S491 and D1S205, and a 4.4-Mb contig of YAC clones of this region was constructed. In the current investigation, gene-based and anonymous STSs were developed from the existing physical map and were then used to construct a contig of sequence-ready bacterial clones across the entire VWS critical region. All STSs and BAC clones were shared with the Sanger Centre, which developed a contig of PAC clones over the same region. A subset of 11 clones from both contigs was selected for high-throughput sequence analysis across the approximately 1.1-Mb region; all but two of these clones have been sequenced completely. Over 900 kb of genomic sequence, including the 350-kb VWS critical region, were analyzed and revealed novel polymorphisms, including an 8-kb deletion/insertion, and revealed 4 known genes, 11 novel genes, 9 putative genes, and 3 psuedogenes. The positional candidates LAMB3, G0S2, HIRF6, and HSD11 were excluded as the VWS gene by mutation analysis. A preliminary gene map for the VWS critical region is as follows: [see text] 41-TEL. The data provided here will help lead to the identification of the VWS gene, and this study provides a model for how laboratories that have a regional interest in the human genome can contribute to the sequencing efforts of the entire human genome.  (+info)

The physiologic development of speech motor control: lip and jaw coordination. (8/439)

This investigation was designed to describe the development of lip and jaw coordination during speech and to evaluate the potential influence of speech motor development on phonologic development. Productions of syllables containing bilabial consonants were observed from speakers in four age groups (i.e., 1-year-olds, 2-year-olds, 6-year-olds, and young adults). A video-based movement tracking system was used to transduce movement of the upper lip, lower lip, and jaw. The coordinative organization of these articulatory gestures was shown to change dramatically during the first several years of life and to continue to undergo refinement past age 6. The present results are consistent with three primary phases in the development of lip and jaw coordination for speech: integration, differentiation, and refinement. Each of these developmental processes entails the existence of distinct coordinative constraints on early articulatory movement. It is suggested that these constraints will have predictable consequences for the sequence of phonologic development.  (+info)

Van der Woude syndrome (VDWS) is a genetic disorder characterized by the combination of lower lip pits, cleft lip with or without cleft palate, and cleft palate alone (CP). The frequency of orofacial clefts ranges from 1:1000 to 1:500 births worldwide, and there are more than 400 syndromes that involve cleft lip with or without cleft palate. VWS is distinct from other clefting syndromes due to the combination of cleft lip and palate (CLP) and CP within the same family. Other features frequently associated with VWS include hypodontia in 10-81% of cases, narrow arched palate, congenital heart disease, heart murmur and cerebral abnormalities, syndactyly of the hands, polythelia, ankyloglossia, and adhesions between the upper and lower gum pads. The association between lower lip pits and cleft lip and/or palate was first described by Anne Van der Woude in 1954. The worldwide disease incidence ranges from 1:100,000 to 1:40,000. Van der Woude syndrome is inherited as an autosomal dominant disease ...
Van der Woude syndrome is a condition that affects the development of the face. Many people with this disorder are born with a cleft lip and/or a cleft palate. Affected individuals usually have depressions (pits) near the center of the lower lip, which may appear moist due to the presence of salivary and mucous glands in the pits. Small mounds of tissue on the lower lip may also occur. In some cases, people with van der Woude syndrome have missing teeth. Some People with van der Woude syndrome may experience delayed language development, learning disabilities, or other mild cognitive problems. This condition is caused by mutations in the IRF6 gene and is inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion ...

Lip reconstruction may be required after trauma or surgical excision. The lips are considered the beginning of the oral cavity and are the most common site of oral cancer. Any reconstruction of the lips must include both functional and cosmetic considerations. The lips are necessary for speech, facial expression, and eating. Because of their prominent location on the face, even small abnormalities can be apparent. The upper and lower lips include the vermilion border. This is the juncture between the lighter skin and the redder tissue (vermilion) that we commonly call the lip. This tissue is red because the skin is thin and underlain by large numbers of capillaries. The vermilion is different both from the oral mucosa and from regular skin, as it includes a cornified stratum corneum and lacks salivary glands, unlike the oral mucosa, but is thinner and more vascularised than regular skin, and lacks both hair follicles and sweat glands. The pattern of the vermilion border defines the areas of the ...

Augmentation of the upper lip is one of the most commonly done non-surgical facial enhancement procedures. This can usually be successfully done through the use of a variety of different hyaluronic acid-based injectable fillers. Despite their popularity and frequency of use, however, injectable fillers can not solve all aesthetic upper lip concerns. A thin upper lip with little vermilion height often does not respond well to volume addition alone and is prone to result in the dreaded duck lip look where most of the filler volume comes horizontally forward rather than increasing vertical vermilion height.. Surgical lip augmentation offers a better result in the thin upper lip because it can alter the location of the vermilion-cutaneous junction…the one anatomic feature by which lip size and shape is mainly judged. Soft, healthy pink lips lend a fresh look to your face. If youre looking for juicy, luscious lips, read on.. Generally, when we meet someone, the first thing we tend to notice is their face and lips. Soft and healthy lips can adorn your face like nothing else can. But our lips are the most sensitive part of our body and require a little TLC.. Most of us are lusting after beautiful pink plumped up lips, but what we dont know is that our lips are like a sponge. When exposed to moisture, they absorb water and plump up. When dehydrated, they dry out and shrink. Also, the skin on our lips is unlike skin anywhere else on the body. It is thinner and has no oil glands, which can result in red, rough and chapped lips. If you are suffering from any of these afflictions, simply follow these seven steps:. Get watered ...
Saliva tends to further dry out the moisture on your rather than add to them.Dermatologists hence advise us not to lick the lips to keep them wet because in the process you are further drying them out and this can lead to darkening of the lips. Even the habit of biting lips should be avoided as there is the risk of damaging them, instead keep a moisturizing lip balm handy for application as it protects and conditions your lips.. Licking your lips and lip balm is an idiosyncrasy that a lot of people suffer from. This is a reaction to nervousness or stress. This might calm your nerves at that moment but the long term damage it does to your lips is quite harsh. It leaves them dry, chapped and even bleeding at time. The best way to avoid this is to first stop using flavored lip balms and secondly to make a conscious effort to adopt other means of relieving stress.. I have several theories:. 1) Its an easy structure to evaluate.. 2) Many parents and practitioners are confused about the difference between a normal labial frenulum and a lip tie. Ive written about that previously. 3) The procedure and the recovery are relatively easy. The stretching exercises for the lip are well-tolerated and the reattachment rate is extremely low. Wouldnt it be great if such a simple lip procedure took care of so many problems? I do think that the upper lip plays a role in normal breast-feeding. With a lip tie, the child has difficulties flanging the upper lip, and this can cause muscular tension that can make opening the mouth widely very difficult. The result is a shallow latch, a small mouth (baby cant open widely), nipple pain and nipple trauma. In my experience, if a baby comes to my office with breastfeeding problems and has a tie, 99% of the time that child will have a tongue tie. They may also have a lip tie (about 50-60% of ...
The skin of the lip, with three to five cellular layers, is very thin compared to typical face skin, which has up to 16 layers. With light skin color, the lip skin contains fewer melanocytes (cells which produce melanin pigment, which give skin its color). Because of this, the blood vessels appear through the skin of the lips, which leads to their notable red coloring. With darker skin color this effect is less prominent, as in this case the skin of the lips contains more melanin and thus is visually darker. The skin of the lip forms the border between the exterior skin of the face, and the interior mucous membrane of the inside of the mouth. The lip skin is not hairy and does not have sweat glands. Therefore, it does not have the usual protection layer of sweat and body oils which keep the skin smooth, inhibit pathogens, and regulate warmth. For these reasons, the lips dry out faster and become chapped more easily. The lower lip is formed from the mandibular prominence, a branch of the first ...

Van der Woude syndrome (VWS) is the most common syndromic form of cleft lip and palate. It is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by pits and/or sinuses of the lower lip, cleft lip, cleft palate and uvular anomalies. Other findings may include ankyloglossia and hypodontia. VWS1 (MIM 119300) and VWS2 (MIM 606713) are caused by mutations in the IRF6 and GRHL3 genes, respectively. IRF6 codes for interferon regulatory factor 6 and GRHL3 codes for grainyhead-like protein 3 homolog.. The Van der Woude syndrome NGS panel consists of two genes: GRHL3 and IRF6.. Copy number variation (CNV) analysis of the Van der Woude syndrome genes is also offered as a panel. Additionally, CTGT offers a comprehensive test (both NGS and CNV panels) for these genes. Panel genes are also offered as individual sequencing and deletion/duplication tests, unless otherwise indicated.. Read less ...

Labial salivary gland biopsy (LSGB) is the most important diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of Sjögrens syndrome (SS), but its diagnostic value is rarely studied. This study assessed the sensibility and specificity of LSGB, and the clinical profiles of patients who were referred for biopsy. Retrospective analysis of the histopathological reports from LSGB and medical report data from patients who underwent LSGB between 2008 and 2011 was conducted. About 290 biopsies were performed and 74 were excluded due to insufficient clinical data. Of the 216 patients, 0.46% was carrier of hepatitis C virus, 30.1% had primary SS (pSS), and 8.8% had secondary SS (sSS). Of the samples, 94.3% presented dryness symptoms, 51.6% experienced dryness only, 42.7% had systemic manifestations, and 66.9% presented low unstimulated salivary flow and/or Schirmers test. LSGB was necessary in 67.6% to confirm the presence of SS based on the American-European Consensus Group 2002 criteria (AECG). Based on specialists opinion,

Introduction: Traumatic lip injuries present major challenges in terms of reconstructive options and the outcome of surgical management. The aetiology of lip injuries includes human bite as interpersonal violence. Bite wounds are always considered to be complex injuries contaminated with unique polymicrobial inoculum. A classification of facial bite injuries has been included and the surgical management of these lesions has also been discussed. We report a rare bite injury on the lower lip that resembled an ulcerative process. Case presentation: A 30-year-old African man presented with a severe tissue defect on his lower lip to a Dental and Oral Department in Tanzania. He explained that 12 days ago he had been involved in a fight and someone had bitten his lower lip. An orofacial examination confirmed a serious loss of lip tissue that resembled a chronic ulcerative process. Accurate assessment of the lesion was made by a thorough evaluation of some parameters such as size, depth, presence of ...

Not everyone is considered a good candidate for the upper lip lift. Some of the features that should be present include: descent of the upper with hidden upper teeth when the mouth is parted, thinner upper lip than lower, and a flattened appearance of the lip. A common mistake is to perform a lip lift on a patient who has a elongated, but large upper lip. In such patients, it may be necessary to perform a mucosal resection to reshape the upper lip as it tapers to the corners to avoid a trout pout appearance. The other concern that is often pondered by the plastic surgeon is to whether or not a lip lift is a safe procedure in someone who has had a open rhinoplasty. In an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made along the columella, necessarily transecting the columellar artery. The columellar artery, along with the angular artery which enters the nose just above the nasolabial folds, feeds a large portion of the nose including the nasal tip. The lip lift incision should provide no risk for creating ...
Children born with clefting of the upper lip exhibit obvious disfigurement of the upper lip and nose. As illustrated below, primary lip surgery of the infant dramatically improves the severe deformity of the perioral and nasal region. It is widely recognized, however, that most patients require additional lip surgeries for an optimum esthetic result. Clinicians often disagree as to when this end point is reached since the decision for additional lip revision is based on subjective clinical assessments.. Facial morphology during function has a major impact on how a person is perceived in society and is known to be an important component of the esthetic outcome for cleft patients, but it has been particularly difficult to incorporate measures of lip function into the decision-making process. It is likely that the different surgical procedures for both primary lip closure and secondary lip revision could be improved if the effects of alternative surgical techniques on function were better ...

In 2008 - 2009 a lip implant made of solid silicone became available. This is basically the same material used to make a chin implant only smaller and more flexible. Like the chin implants it has memory in that if you twist it with your fingers and let go it immediately returns to its original shape. Unlike the chin implants which sit on top of stationary bone in the lips these implants are subject to a great deal of motion and deformational forces. The manufacturers were able to clear this through the FDA by basically stating it was the same as the chin implants. However an implant placed on the chin and immobile is quite different than the same type of implant placed in the mobile lips. It is like comparing apples with vegetables. If that was not the case the manufacturer would use the word lip in the supporting documentation, advertising and name of the product but has failed to do so. My initial concern was that the memory of the implant would cause it to push into the surrounding lip tissue ...

Shh signaling is a master regulator of the epithelial-mesenchymal interactions that drive orofacial development, but specific targets of the pathway in upper lip development had not been identified. In this study, we leveraged a mouse model of transient in utero inhibition of the Shh signaling pathway to investigate genetic and cellular drivers of lip morphogenesis and cleft lip pathogenesis. Whole-transcriptome expression profiling identified significant downregulation of canonical Shh pathway members, as well as multiple Fox family members during the initial pathogenesis of cleft lip. The defining feature of Fox transcription factors is a Forkhead, or winged-helix, DNA-binding domain. This family includes 44 genes in the mouse genome, with each having a close human ortholog (Jackson et al., 2010). Fox genes have been identified as targets of Shh signaling in diverse developmental contexts, including the gut and central nervous system, while GLI consensus binding sites have been identified in ...

With soft lips prepped you can apply lip makeup. Using a lip liner is a personal choice. If you opt to line your lips look for a lip makeup liner that matches your lip color. Avoid having a clear line around your lips which looks clownish. If you fill in the lips with lip liner before you apply lipstick it will help the lipstick to last longer. A touch of gloss to the lips gives the lips a fuller pouty appearance. Dab a little extra gloss in the middle of your bottom lip for a very pouty look.. Lipstick is always fun to play with but a little goes a long way. Lipstick has a shelve life of about two years. If it smells bad, feels dry and oily then throw the lip makeup out. High professionalism lip injections doctor in Santa Barbara and lip enhancement guides? How much blood is lost during tumescent liposuction? One of the benefits of this technique against the previous liposuction technique is the modest amount of blood loss. In the older techniques, significant blood volume was involved, and sometimes blood transfusions were part of the recovery. Is bruising the same during regular and tumescent liposuction? Bruising during tumescent liposuction is less compared to other techniques. First of all, the incisions size during the tumescent technique is minimal; between 1-3mm, these are non-sutured incisions called adits; this maintains these incisions open for about 48 hours and permits to drain out the remaining fluid. Also, with the vasoconstriction caused by adrenaline, the blood release under the skin is minimal, so the chances of bruising are minimized.. Botox doesnt actually erase wrinkles.
