Mucin expression and function in the female reproductive tract. (1/847)

Reproductive tract epithelia are characterized by the presence of a thick, apical glycocalyx. This glycoprotein coat is drastically reduced in the uterus of many species during the time of embryo implantation. Recent studies indicate that mucin glycoproteins constitute a large proportion of the apical glycocalyx. One of these mucins, Muc-1, has particularly important functions at the luminal surface of the uterus and other female reproductive tract tissues. Muc-1 appears to play a dominant role in maintaining a functionally non-receptive uterine surface with regard to blastocyst attachment. Conversion to a receptive uterine state is brought about by the concerted actions of ovarian steroid hormones that in several species also strongly modulate Muc-1 protein and mRNA expression. Muc-1 also appears to serve a general function in protecting reproductive tract mucosa since Muc-1 null mice are particularly prone to bacterial infection. Collectively, these studies indicate that mucins, including Muc-1, play important barrier roles in reproductive processes and protection from bacterial pathogenesis in the female reproductive tract.  (+info)

T cell-tropic simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) and simian-human immunodeficiency viruses are readily transmitted by vaginal inoculation of rhesus macaques, and Langerhans' cells of the female genital tract are infected with SIV. (2/847)

Intravaginal inoculation with T cell-tropic molecular clones of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) or simian-human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) or some dual-tropic strains of SIV or SHIV produced systemic infection in rhesus macaques. Vaginal inoculation with other dual-tropic molecular clones of SIV or SHIV did not infect rhesus macaques even after multiple inoculations. While in vitro measures of macrophage tropism do not predict which primate lentiviruses will produce systemic infection after intravaginal inoculation, the level to which a virus replicates in vivo after intravenous inoculation does predict the outcome of intravaginal inoculation. Another series of studies, using combined in situ hybridization and immunolabeling to simultaneously detect SIV RNA and identify the immunophenotype of infected cells, demonstrated that a large proportion (approximately 40% in some animals) of the SIV-infected cells in the vagina and cervix were Langerhans' cells. This is the first in vivo demonstration that Langerhans' cells in the genital tract are infected with SIV and that dendritic cells are significant reservoirs for lentiviruses.  (+info)

Mucosal vaccination strategies for women. (3/847)

Women were immunized orally, rectally, or vaginally with a recombinant cholera toxin B-containing vaccine to determine which of these mucosal immunization routes generate the greatest levels of antibody in the female genital tract and rectum. ELISA was used to measure concentrations of cholera toxin B-specific IgA and IgG antibody in serum and secretions before and after three immunizations. Each immunization route similarly increased specific IgG in serum and specific IgA in saliva. Only the vaginal route increased IgA antibodies in genital tract secretions and could be shown to induce a local IgG response. However, vaginal immunization failed to produce antibody in the rectum. In a similar fashion, rectal immunization elicited highest concentrations of locally derived IgA and IgG antibody in the rectum but was ineffective for generating antibody in the genital tract. The data suggest that local immunization may induce the greatest immune responses in the female genital tract and rectum of humans.  (+info)

Sexual function in women suffering from aortoiliac occlusive disease. (4/847)

OBJECTIVE: To describe the sexual function in women suffering aortoiliac occlusive disease (AIOD) and in an age-matched reference group. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-six women suffering from AIOD were included. Twenty were investigated before vascular intervention (untreated) and 16 different women after treatment (treated). Eighteen age-matched women served as a reference group. The patients answered a questionnaire including sexual, social and medical questions and a gynaecological examination was performed. RESULTS: Untreated patients with AIOD have a significantly impaired physical well-being compared to the other groups (p < 0.001). A negative effect of the vascular disease and its treatment on sexual life was experienced by 69% of treated compared to 40% affected among untreated (p = 0.05). Vulval sensibility was impaired in 44% of treated, 11% of untreated and 22% of reference patients. Defective anal sphincter function was found in 33% of treated, 17% of untreated and 6% in the reference group. Those differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Symptomatic AIOD in women is associated with a significantly impaired physical and sexual well-being. Though limited by size and methodology, the results indicate the possibility of iatrogenic nerve damage.  (+info)

Detection of human herpesvirus 8 in cervicovaginal secretions and seroprevalence in human immunodeficiency virus type 1-seropositive and -seronegative women. (5/847)

Epidemiologic studies suggest that human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) may be sexually transmitted. To study the potential for HHV-8 transmission through cervicovaginal (CV) secretions, the presence of HHV-8 DNA was investigated by nested polymerase chain reaction in the cellular fraction of CV secretions from 36 human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-seropositive and 29 HIV-1-seronegative women. The same patients were tested for antibodies to two defined HHV-8 antigens (latency-associated nuclear antigen and open-reading frame 65-encoded structural protein) and for HHV-8 DNA in their peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The findings were compared with the rate of HHV-8 detection in semen samples of 20 HIV-1-infected men. HHV-8 DNA was detected in the CV samples from only 1 HHV-8-seropositive AIDS patient, in 3 PBMC samples (1/29 HIV-1-seronegative patients, 1/3 AIDS patients with Kaposi's sarcoma, and 1/19 AIDS patients), and in 1 of 20 semen samples. HHV-8 infection was more common in HIV-1-infected than uninfected women. Thus HHV-8 DNA is only rarely detectable in CV secretions and semen of HHV-8-infected individuals.  (+info)

The oestrous cycle of the brown lemur, Lemur fulvus. (6/847)

Examination of vaginal smears and observations of the colour and tumescence of the genitalia and discharge of mucus of 9 brown lemurs indicated that the oestrous cycle lasted for 30 days and that cycles occurred between September and July. The timing of cycles of females housed in visual isolation differed from that of females able to see other lemurs, indicating that the oestrous cycle in this species can be influenced by different housing conditions.  (+info)

Sperm transport and storage in the agile antechinus (Antechinus agilis). (7/847)

This study was an examination of the timing of ejaculation and the dynamics of sperm transport in the female reproductive tract of the agile Antechinus (Antechinus agilis) and the relationship of these parameters to single and multiple matings. Mating in this species is characteristically long compared with that of other mammals, lasting for up to 8-12 h during which time the pair remain locked together. After the first hour of mating, only approximately 40% of males had ejaculated, but by the third hour all males had ejaculated. The total number of spermatozoa extracted from the female tract remained at approximately 30 x 10(3) spermatozoa per side over the next 9 h of copulation. After completion of male/female access (12 h), approximately 56% of spermatozoa extracted were located in the lower isthmic region of the oviduct where specialized sperm storage crypts are located. The number of spermatozoa extracted from the female reproductive tract did not decline over the next 3 days, but there was a change in the distribution of spermatozoa with an increase in the proportion of extracted spermatozoa stored in the lower isthmus (approximately 76%). However, 7 to 14 days after mating, only approximately 30% of the stored spermatozoa ( approximately 9.4 x 10(3) spermatozoa per side) were still present in the isthmus. When females were mated with a second male on a consecutive day, the sperm numbers extracted from the tract were about twice that deposited during single mating, with sperm transport to the lower isthmus occurring over a similar time frame. Although the occurrence of extended copulations in the wild has not yet been confirmed, these laboratory results suggest that similar periods of copulation are likely, since completion of the ejaculation process requires at least 3 h. The extended copulation in A. agilis reduces the possibility of an early second mating, which might interfere with the normal transport and crypt colonization of spermatozoa through competition.  (+info)

Molecular cloning of cDNA for equine follistatin and its gene expression in the reproductive tissues of the mare. (8/847)

A cDNA clone encoding equine follistatin was isolated from an equine ovarian cDNA library. Out of 1.2 x 10(5) independent clones screened, one positive clone was isolated and its cDNA sequence determined. The isolated clone, named EQ-FS-1, contained a complete open reading frame encoding 344 amino acid residues. The similarity of its deduced amino acid sequence to these of other mammalian species was greater than 95%. Although its expression level varied among the tissues examined, follistatin mRNA was detected in the equine uteroplacental tissues, follicles and corpora lutea by Northern blot analysis. In situ hybridization revealed that the expression of follistatin mRNA in the equine follicle was restricted exclusively to granulosa cells. When the expression pattern of follistatin mRNA in the equine uteroplacental tissues from mid- to late-pregnancy was examined, it was shown that its expression level tended to decrease after mid-pregnancy. These results suggest that follistatin acts in the reproductive tissues of the mare in maintaining pregnancy.  (+info)

In contrast to male genitalia that typically exhibit patterns of rapid and divergent evolution among internally fertilizing animals, female genitalia have been less well studied and are generally thought to evolve slowly among closely-related species. As a result, few cases of male-female genital coevolution have been documented. In Drosophila, female copulatory structures have been claimed to be mostly invariant compared to male structures. Here, we re-examined male and female genitalia in the nine species of the D. melanogaster subgroup. We describe several new species-specific female genital structures that appear to coevolve with male genital structures, and provide evidence that the coevolving structures contact each other during copulation. Several female structures might be defensive shields against apparently harmful male structures, such as cercal teeth, phallic hooks and spines. Evidence for male-female morphological coevolution in Drosophila has previously been shown at the post-copulatory

N2 - Objectives: To study the distribution of glycoconjugates in the epithelia of various regions of the human female reproductive tract and to examine whether lectins can be used as specific probes to define cell populations in the human female reproductive tract. Design: Nineteen fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled lectins, which recognize different oligosaccharide structures, were applied to frozen sections of human fallopian tubes (distal and proximal segments) and endometrium. The differential binding patterns of the lectins to the epithelia were evaluated under fluorescent microscopy. Results: Four of 19 FITC-labeled lectins tested demonstrated distinct binding patterns along the reproductive tract. Arachis hypogaea (PNA) and Ricincus communis II selectively reacted with epithelial cells ...
Background: We have previously demonstrated intrinsic anti-HIV activity in cervicovaginal lavage (CVL) from HIV-infected women with high CD4 counts and not on antiretroviral therapy. However, the impact of HIV disease progression on CVL innate immune responses has not been delineated. Methods: CVL from 57 HIV-infected women not on antiretroviral therapy were collected by washing the cervicovaginal area with 10 ml of sterile normal saline. We characterized subject HIV disease progression by CD4 count strata: >500 cells/μl, 200-500 cells/μl, or ...

We examined mating behaviour in the harpacticoid copepod Tisbe battagliai Volkmann-Rocco, 1972, in particular the process of delivering spermatophore seminal contents to the female urosome. Labelling using 4′6′ diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) coupled with two-photon confocal laser scanning microscopy successfully visualised the spermatophore and female internal reproductive system. Sections of the female urosome were imaged to examine seminal fluid stores. The female tissues were found to auto-fluoresce as red emission under green excitation, requiring no additional tissue labelling. DAPI-labelled seminal fluid stores were identified within the female reproductive system. The details observed agreed with previous descriptions of copepod reproductive anatomy and of spermatophores. Specimens cultured under pH 8.10 and a simulated ocean acidification scenario (pH 7.67) were compared for changes in reproductive anatomy and spermatophore size and site attachment. No differences were observed in

Eurotophobia is a specific (or isolated) phobia, centered on non-social key factors. Isolated phobias tend to have some previous trauma (often in childhood and often physically injurious) as a root cause; a fear of bees may stem from an injury in childhood, for instance.. Upbringing can also play a role, such as parental warnings about a direct threat (such as snakes can bite and kill you) which is especially notable in cases where a threat is more imminent. (An allergy to bees or peanut butter, for instance, would naturally reinforce a real medical concern.). It is thought that genetics and hereditary factors may play a role in specific phobias, especially those related to a danger of injury. (A primal fight or flight reflex may be more easily triggered in those with a genetic predisposition, for instance.). By contrast, social phobias (like a fear of body odor or touch) are less well-understood, are driven by social anxiety, and are broadly labeled as social anxiety disorder.. In all ...

Sexually transmitted diseases constitute major health issues and their prevention and treatment continue to challenge the health care systems worldwide. Animal models are essential for a deeper understanding of the diseases and the development of safe and protective vaccines. Currently a good predictive non-rodent model is needed for the study of genital chlamydia in women. The pig has become an increasingly popular model for human diseases due to its close similarities to humans. The aim of this review is to compare the porcine and human female genital tract and associated immune system in the perspective of genital Chlamydia infection. The comparison of women and sows has shown that despite some gross anatomical differences, the structures and proportion of layers undergoing cyclic alterations are very similar. Reproductive hormonal cycles are closely related, only showing a slight difference in cycle length and source of luteolysing hormone. The epithelium and functional layers of the endometrium

The mammalian female reproductive tract is an organ system that is composed of the oviducts, uterus, cervix and vagina. The primary role of this organ system is reproduction, i.e. the continuation of the species. The female reproductive tract organs are also a significant concern for womens health and disease, notably infertility and cancer. Some diseases of the female reproductive tract are caused by abnormalities that occur in the female fetus during embryogenesis. These include Müllerian agenesis and vaginal septum, which can prevent normal reproduction (Gidwani and Falcone, 1999). Agenesis of the female reproductive tract has been estimated to occur in one in 4000 to 20,000 women (Kim and Laufer, 1994). It is also suggested that deregulation of embryonic genes is observed in some types of cancers in several organs (Peifer and Polakis, 2000; Chi and Epstein, 2002; Ruiz i Altaba et al., 2002). Most studies of the female reproductive tract are focused upon its biology in adults. Thus, the ...
Cunnilingus is an oral sex act performed by a person on a females genitalia (the clitoris, other parts of the vulva or the vagina). The clitoris is the most sexually sensitive part of the human female genitalia, and its stimulation may result in female sexual arousal or orgasm. Cunnilingus can be sexually arousing for participants and may be performed by a sexual partner as foreplay to incite sexual arousal before other sexual activities (such as vaginal or anal intercourse) or as an erotic and physically intimate act on its own. Like most forms of sexual activity, oral sex can be a risk for contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs/STDs). However, the transmission risk for oral sex, especially HIV transmission, is significantly lower than for vaginal or anal sex. Oral sex is often regarded as taboo, but most countries do not have laws which ban the practice. Commonly, heterosexual couples do not regard cunnilingus as affecting the virginity of either partner, while lesbian couples ...
A detailed study of the female reproductive system in the nematode orders Dorylaimida and Enoplida showed that the structure of ovary and oviduct was largely similar, whereas that of the uterus varied, depending on the species. The wall of the ovary at the germinal end is formed by many small cells; the oviduct consists of a single row of disc-like cells without a distinct central lumen. The oviduct starts closer to the germinal end of the ovary in enoplids, about the middle of the ovary in mononchs and closer to the end where the eggs ripen in dorylaims. A spermatheca is always absent. Trichodorids (usually considered as dorylaims) show such important dissimilarities in the structure of the female reproductive system that their current position within the Dorylaimida and even within the Enoplia becomes questionable.
An Indiana University study published in the September issue of the International Journal of Sexual Health found that women who feel more positively about womens genitals find it easier to orgasm and are more likely to engage in sexual health promoting behaviors, such as having regular gynecological exams or performing vulvar self-examinations.. These are important findings about body image, said Debby Herbenick, associate director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion in the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Our culture often portrays womens genitals as dirty and in need of cleaning and grooming. Some women may have had greater exposure to such negative messages or may be more susceptible to their impact.. Herbenicks study created a scale for measuring mens and womens attitudes toward womens genitals. Such a scale, she wrote in the study, could be useful in sex therapy, in medical settings to help better understand decision-making that goes into gynecological ...

Visual depictions of female genitalia differ depending on source. Med Humanit 36(2):75-9.. Very little research has attempted to describe normal human variation in female genitalia, and no studies have compared the visual images that women might use in constructing their ideas of average and acceptable genital morphology to see if there are any systematic differences. The objective of the present work was to determine if visual depictions of the vulva differed according to their source so as to alert medical professionals and their patients to how these depictions might capture variation and thus influence perceptions of normality. A comparative analysis was conducted by measuring (a) published visual materials from human anatomy textbooks in a university library, (b) feminist publications (print and online) depicting vulval morphology and (c) online pornography, focusing on the most visited and freely accessible sites in the UK. Post hoc tests showed that labial protuberance was significantly ...
The mechanics of human sexuality or mechanics of sex, or more formally the biomechanics of human sexuality, is the study of the mechanics related to human sexual activity. Examples of topics include the biomechanical study of the strength of vaginal tissues and the biomechanics of male erectile function. The mechanics of sex under limit circumstances, such as sexual activity at zero-gravity in outer space, are also being studied. Pioneering researchers studied the male and female genitals during coitus (penile-vaginal penetration) with ultrasound technology in 1992 and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 1999, mapping the anatomy of the activity and taking images illustrating the fit of male and female genitals. In the research using MRI, researchers imaged couples performing coitus inside an MRI machine. The magnetic resonance images also showed that the penis has the shape of a boomerang, that one third of its length consists of the root of the penis, and that the vaginal walls wrap snugly ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - An innovative ovipositor for niche exploitation impacts genital coevolution between sexes in a fruit-damaging Drosophila. AU - Muto, Leona. AU - Kamimura, Yoshitaka. AU - Tanaka, Kentaro M.. AU - Takahashi, Aya. PY - 2018/9/26. Y1 - 2018/9/26. N2 - Limited attention has been given to ecological factors influencing the coevolution of male and female genitalia. The innovative ovipositor of Drosophila suzukii, an invading fruit pest, represents an appealing case to document this phenomenon. The serrated saw-like ovipositor is used to pierce the hard skin of ripening fruits that are not used by other fruit flies that prefer soft decaying fruits. Here, we highlight another function of the ovipositor related to its involvement in genital coupling during copulation. We compared the morphology and coupling of male and female genitalia in this species to its sibling species, Drosophila subpulchrella, and to an outgroup species, Drosophila biarmipes. These comparisons and a surgical ...

Hi Farmbuddy,. Did you know that most snail species are hermaphrodites i.e they possess both male and female reproductive organs? If you didnt know that, youre welcome!. Another fun fact is that even though these snails are hermaphrodites, they do not fertilize themselves but mate in a traditional way.. But what were really excited to tell you is; the fact that every snail has a female reproductive organ means every single one of them can lay eggs!. So dont be surprised when you see our snail farm bursting at the seams with a multitude of offsprings!. ...
Female Genital Mutilation (often referred to as FGM) describes a range of procedures during which the female genitals are partly or entirely removed or injured with the goals of inhibiting a womans sexual feelings. FGM is practiced predominantly in the northern half of Africa and parts of the Middle East. As a result of immigration, the practice has also spread to Europe, Australia and the United States. Some tradition-minded families have their daughters undergo FGM whilst on vacation in their home countries.. Amnesty International estimates that over 130 million women worldwide have been affected by some form of FGM, with over 3 million girls at risk of undergoing FGM every year. Among practising cultures, FGM is most commonly performed between the ages of four and eight. The procedure is often performed by people who have had no medical training, without anaesthetic sterilisation, or the use of proper medical instruments. It can lead to death through shock from excessive bleeding or to ...
Fungal infections are the most common cause of infections caused by the increase in the clitoris and the fungus Candida albicans, the female genitalia. Other types of infections or viruses that may affect the clitoris is herpes, and trichomoniasis vaginitis, as reported by eHow ...
Dear Readers,. Like fingerprints, genitalia are unique from person to person, including those who are intersex. Someone with an intersex condition could have external genitalia that are ambiguous or their genitalia might be different from their genetic sex. They could have female genitalia on the outside but be genetically male, they may have both testes and ovaries, or they may have some other combination where the lines between male and female organs are blurred. Also called disorders of sexual development (DSDs), these conditions can be due to genetic or hormonal irregularities. Sometimes DSDs are noticed at birth, while others may not be detected until puberty. Some people might simply ignore irregularities and never seek care, or they may never even realize they have discrepant genitalia. Its hard to say how common it is to have an intersex condition because every case of intersex is different. If you had to put a number on it, though, most estimates are around 1 in 2000 live births to 1 ...
Ok, lets get technical!. At my last workshop a mom asked me with honest humility what the difference is between the two V words. The other moms laughed with appreciation.. One picked up a book she recognized from the display table full of my favorite childrens books and said she only learned recently, when she read the book with her kids!. So, lets clear this up right now, cuz I know youre loath to Google it for fear of the search results youll get. (Pro tip - whatever you dont want to Google, just search the term on Wikipedia. You wont get wack-a-doo results or images you dont want to see - or targeted advertising for the next month.). Very little is known about which ion channels are in charge of detecting painful stimuli from the female reproductive tract; and how pain is transmitted via peripheral sensory nerves (innervating these organs) to the central nervous system, says Dr Castro Kraftchenko.. Also, little is known about how mechanical stimuli is detected and transmitted from female reproductive organs to the Central Nervous System.. This lack in knowledge provides a limiting factor for developing treatments for painful intercourse associated with endometriosis and vulvodynia.. The aim of our study is to fill this gap in knowledge. this study provides novel findings advancing the understanding of vaginal sensation that can be used to recognise and explore changes in states of chronic pelvic pain associated with endometriosis and vulvodynia.. When asked by a reporter whether she had a penis or not, Lady Gaga responded, My beautiful vagina is very offended by that question.. How much do you really know about the vagina? Sadly, most women dont know an awful lot about their own sexual anatomy. But, studies show the more you know about your lady bits, the more orgasmic you can be. So, that is reason enough to learn some interesting facts about the fabulous vagina.. 1. There are over 1000 nicknames for the vagina (and/or vulva) including down there, lady flower, beaver, honey pot, bearded clam, pink taco, doodiddle, coochie, fluff, cunt, pussy, snatch, gash, muff, fur burger, twat, quim, hooha, the bat cave and the love canal. The reason we have so many nicknames, is because many people are still ashamed to call it a vagina. Shame on you Oprah! Vajayjay, indeed.. 2. Colposcopy is the examination of the female genitals (cervix, vagina, or vulva) with an instrument called a colposcope. It is usually done to evaluate any lesions suspected of representing abnormal tissue growth or cancer. This may be an abnormal Pap smear or any lesion which does not resolve spontaneously in a reasonable amount of time as decided by the clinician. The colposcope is an instrument which permits magnification of lesions of the genital tract. A mild solution of acetic acid is applied to areas of the genital tract and abnormal areas turn white enhancing the quality of the colposcopic examination. All surface (epithelial) lesions become more distinct and structures including the cells on the wall of the cervix become more distinguishable using this method. After gross microscopic examination of the affected tissue for acetowhite changes and blood vessel patterns, tiny samples of tissue (biopsies) are removed and sent to pathology for histological (microscopic) evaluation. Colposcopy ...
The immune response to C. trachomatis not only is critical to the resolution of infection but also may be responsible for disease progression. Because of this dichotomy, it is imperative to understand the nature and substance of the anti-Chlamydiaimmune response and how it differs during a mild infection and during chronic inflammation with severe consequences. The precise mechanisms that lead to immunopathology and consequent organ dysfunction in humans remains largely unknown; however, identification of the antigens associated with immunopathology is a crucial step in understanding these processes. Ultimately the development of a safe and effective vaccine or a serological test to determine probable risk of developing disease sequelae will depend on understanding the interplay between chlamydial antigens and the host immune responses that evoke protection or pathology.. We have evaluated the human immune response to chlamydial Hsp10 and assessed the potential of that immune response to be a ...

Our observations constitute the first description of the functional morphology of penile eversion and ejaculation in birds. Eversion of the penis is explosive, occurring in approximately a third of a second in air, and less than half a second inside glass barriers. It is difficult to predict whether eversion inside of the female is faster or slower, because we do not know enough about how the female oviduct functions during intromission and the interactions between the male and female genitalia (see below).
