Biodiversity of Clostridium botulinum type E strains isolated from fish and fishery products. (1/287)

The genetic biodiversity of Clostridium botulinum type E strains was studied by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) with two macrorestriction enzymes (SmaI-XmaI and XhoI) and by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis with two primers (OPJ 6 and OPJ 13) to characterize 67 Finnish isolates from fresh fish and fishery products, 15 German isolates from farmed fish, and 10 isolates of North American or North Atlantic origin derived mainly from different types of seafood. The effects of fish species, processing, and geographical origin on the epidemiology of the isolates were evaluated. Cluster analysis based on macrorestriction profiles was performed to study the genetic relationships of the isolates. PFGE and RAPD analyses were combined and resulted in the identification of 62 different subtypes among the 92 type E isolates analyzed. High genetic biodiversity among the isolates was observed regardless of their source. Finnish and North American or North Atlantic isolates did not form distinctly discernible clusters, in contrast with the genetically homogeneous group of German isolates. On the other hand, indistinguishable or closely related genetic profiles among epidemiologically unrelated samples were detected. It was concluded that the high genetic variation was probably a result of a lack of strong selection factors that would influence the evolution of type E. The wide genetic biodiversity observed among type E isolates indicates the value of DNA-based typing methods as a tool in contamination studies in the food industry and in investigations of botulism outbreaks.  (+info)

Repeated hand urticaria due to contact with fishfood. (2/287)

BACKGROUND: The etiology of urticaria is often difficult to determine. However, in case of repeated circumstance-connected urticaria, the reason may be easily clarifyable. CASE: A 51-year-old healthy woman repeatedly experienced occupational hand urticaria when handling fish food. An unexpected reason for the urticaria was found in that the fishfood contained histamine as a "contaminant". CONCLUSIONS: In fishfood batches, biological degradation can produce histamine and possibly other toxic substances that can lead to occupational health problems.  (+info)

Animal products, calcium and protein and prostate cancer risk in The Netherlands Cohort Study. (3/287)

Prostate cancer risk in relation to consumption of animal products, and intake of calcium and protein was investigated in the Netherlands Cohort Study. At baseline in 1986, 58,279 men aged 55-69 years completed a self-administered 150-item food frequency questionnaire and a questionnaire on other risk factors for cancer. After 6.3 years of follow-up, 642 prostate cancer cases were available for analysis. In multivariate case-cohort analyses adjusted for age, family history of prostate cancer and socioeconomic status, no associations were found for consumption of fresh meat, fish, cheese and eggs. Positive trends in risk were found for consumption of cured meat and milk products (P-values 0.04 and 0.02 respectively). For calcium and protein intake, no associations were observed. The hypothesis that dietary factors might be more strongly related to advanced prostate tumours could not be confirmed in our study. We conclude that, in this study, animal products are not strongly related to prostate cancer risk.  (+info)

Effects of replacing fish meal with soy protein concentrate and of DL-methionine supplementation in high-energy, extruded diets on the growth and nutrient utilization of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. (4/287)

Our objectives were to test the potential replacement of fish meal by soy protein concentrate (SPC) in high-energy, extruded diets fed to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and to evaluate the efficiency of DL-methionine supplementation of soy-based diets. Groups of trout (initial BW 103 to 106 g) were fed to visual satiety with isonitrogenous (6.6% DM) high-energy (22.8 MJ/kg DM gross energy), extruded diets, in which fish meal was progressively replaced with SPC (0, 50, 75, and 100%). Three 100% SPC diets were formulated to be either unsupplemented or supplemented with DL-methionine, so that total methionine content was .8 or 1.0% of DM. The quality of the SPC source used was assessed by measuring the antitryptic and antigenic activities and the concentrations of the isoflavones daidzein and genistein. Apparent digestibility of the diets was determined using the indirect method. A growth trial was conducted over 90 d at a water temperature of 18 degrees C. In addition to body composition analysis, plasma amino acid concentrations, anti-soy protein antibodies in the serum, and isoflavone concentrations in the bile were measured. The SPC source tested exhibited low antitryptic and antigenic activities, but it contained high concentrations of isoflavones (1,990 and 5,903 ppm for daidzein and genistein, respectively). Protein digestibility was high (92%) and was unaffected either the proportion of SPC in the diet or by DL-methionine supplementation. This was also true for the availability of amino acids, except phenylalanine. Digestibility of lipid and energy was reduced by 19% when SPC totally replaced fish meal. Growth rate was reduced when more than 50% of the dietary protein was of soy origin (daily growth coefficient of 3.2 and 2.1% for the control and the unsupplemented 100% SPC diet, respectively). The effect on growth was mainly explained by a general decline in feed intake (13.7 and 12.0 g DM x kg BW(-1) x d(-1) for the control and the unsupplemented 100% SPC diet, respectively) and in lipid and, thus, in energy digestibility. The DL-methionine supplementation partially reversed the depressive effects of high dietary SPC incorporation (+13% growth), mainly by enhancing intake. The negative effect of SPC incorporation either may be due to the high isoflavone concentration or to an interaction between the soy protein component and the dietary lipids.  (+info)

Purification of collagenase and specificity of its related enzyme from Bacillus subtilis FS-2. (5/287)

A collagenase in the culture supernatant of B. subtilis FS-2, isolated from traditional fish sauce, was purified. The enzyme had a molecular mass of about 125 kDa. It degraded gelatin with maximum activity at pH 9 and a temperature of 50 degrees C. The purified enzyme was stable over a wide range of pH (5-10) and lost only 15% and 35% activity after incubation at 60 degrees C and 65 degrees C for 30 min, respectively. Slightly inhibited by EDTA, soybean tripsin inhibitor, iodoacetamide, and iodoacetic acid, the enzyme was severely inhibited by 2-beta-mercaptoethanol and DFP. The protease from B. subtilis FS-2 culture digested acid casein into fragments with hydrophilic and hydrophobic amino acids as C-terminals, in particular Asn, Gly, Val, and Ile.  (+info)

Feeding value of an enzymatically digested protein for early-weaned pigs. (6/287)

Weanling pigs were used in a series of studies to determine the feeding value of an enzymatically digested protein product developed from a blend of swine and poultry abattoir by-products. The initial study used 156 pigs weaned at approximately 22 d of age to compare the product with menhaden fish meal in Phase II diets. The product supported equal growth rate, and there was no preference for diet exhibited based on inclusion level of the enzymatically digested protein product. The second study used 100 pigs weaned at approximately 21 d of age to compare the product with spray-dried animal blood cells in Phase II diets. The product supported a growth rate equal to that with the blood cells, and the combination of products enhanced growth rate (P<.05). The third study used 265 pigs to compare the product with spray-dried porcine plasma in a slope ratio growth assay. Results demonstrated a relative feeding value of 91% for the product over a 4-wk feeding period. The fourth study used 290 pigs to compare the product with spray-dried porcine plasma in Phase II diets; results demonstrated comparable growth performance. The final study used 180 pigs to compare the product with spray-dried porcine plasma in Phase I diets; results demonstrated comparable growth performance. These data indicate that the enzymatically digested abattoir by-product is a high-quality protein source for weanling pigs.  (+info)

Using microwave distillation-solid-phase microextraction--gas chromatography--mass spectrometry for analyzing fish tissue. (7/287)

A technique for the analysis of the volatile compounds from fish tissue employing microwave distillation-solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry is described. A qualitative listing of 174 compounds observed in the headspace is given, and a quantitative method for the determination of the off-flavor contaminants (2-methylisoborneol and geosmin) is presented. Borneol and decahydro-1-naphthol are used as the surrogate and internal standards, respectively. A linear calibration curve is obtained for 0.1 to 5 ppb with a recovery level of 60% at 2.5 ppb. Comparison of the instrumental method with a human flavor checker showed good agreement.  (+info)

Lactobacillus acidipiscis sp. nov. and Weissella thailandensis sp. nov., isolated from fermented fish in Thailand. (8/287)

Eleven strains of homofermentative, rod-shaped lactic acid bacteria and five strains of heterofermentative, sphere-shaped lactic acid bacteria were isolated from fermented fish (pla-ra and pla-chom) in Thailand. They were identified as new species and named Lactobacillus acidipiscis sp. nov. and Weissella thailandensis sp. nov., respectively, on the basis of phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences, DNA relatedness and phenotypic characteristics. The type strain of L. acidipiscis is FS60-1T (= PCU 207T = NRIC 0300T = HSCC 1411T = JCM 10692T = TISTR 1386T) and the type strain of Weissella thailandensis is FS61-1T (= PCU 210T = NRIC 0298T = HSCC 1412T = JCM 10695T = TISTR 1384T).  (+info)

From Anthony Quinlan; Agronomist at ERA (Environmentally Responsible Agriculture) The usage of this type of product is certainly on the rise in many forms of agriculture, particularly in intensive horticulture and orchards/vineyards. The drive for this demand is mostly due to the increase in awareness of how fish products and products like it actually work in the soil and how they are applicable in a production system. As far as a comparative reference in terms of amounts used in agricultural systems at present - Im unsure and unaware of any data. But my experience in Australia and the US would point an exponential growth of these types of inputs. A lot of this is a direct result of information reaching the farmers on the benefits of using the products and perhaps more so of the damage that conventional products have on the soil. Rates would be in the order of 20-200L per hectare. Aquasate is a high quality material. Most commercial fish products on the market are fish emulsions - meaning that ...

Labelling rules require that where ingredients are highlighted in the name of the food, the amount of that ingredient must be declared as a percentage of the final product (QUID- quantitative ingredient declaration). Although the amount of an ingredient is calculated on a recipe basis, enforcement authorities usually check the declaration by analysis of the finished product.. The analysis determines the nitrogen (mainly on a fat free basis) of meat or fish ingredient, and converts this to a meat or fish content using a previously determined nitrogen factor. The Sub-committee oversees the determination of nitrogen factors for meat, poultry and seafood for use by both enforcement laboratories to check labelling and by industry to check their meat and seafood raw materials.. The Subcommittee has already produced reports on nitrogen factors for pork (1991), beef (1993), mutton and lamb (1995, 1996), chicken (2000), scampi (2000), turkey (2002) and cod fillet and mince blocks for coated fish products ...

The European Commission has officially warned Bangkok about dragging its feet in combatting illegal fishing, and the horrifying work conditions in the fisheries sector. Now an EU import ban on Thai fish products looms on the horizon. EURACTIV Germany reports. After a year of inactivity regarding the issue, officials in Brussels have noticed the first signs of reform from the military government in Thailand.. But scepticism remains high. In the coming weeks the Commission could issue Thailand with a red card, confirming that its efforts in combatting the illegal activity have been insufficient. This could lead to an EU embargo on Thai seafood products.. In April, the Commission issued a yellow card to Bangkok. After detailed analysis, the Commission warned that flaws in the monitoring, control and sanctioning systems relating to fisheries had led it to conclude that Thailand is not doing enough.. At the start of October, the Commission will decide on the next round of cards to be issued ...

I must admit we almost always ate a slight variation of the same thing: a soup - of which Hidden Paradise had a several variants and the chicken combo which had a sliced Teriyaki style and a sliced chicken cutlet. The cutlet was always cooked to order because breading gets soggy in minutes and it never was. The soup had noodles which I saw Wang Ye put into the boiling water. the Bok Choi in the soup was never over cooked as it still had that crunch. You bet, the shrimp was frozen and the crab was that crab like fish product. But for $5.99 I didnt expect anything else. And they always gave us a plate of fresh bean sprouts to eat while we waited. Our tea cup was always kept full. The Lins always seemed to appreciate us as customers. We ate lunch two or three times a week. It was, by my measure, great but I never strayed from what I ordered the first time. I guess I should have. Take care.. ...

The aim of this study is to overview what changes happened on the maritime field during the early Meiji period, how the compilation of Japan Fisheries linked to the changes, and when the Japan Fisheries was launched, completed and published. The trilogy of Japan Fishing Method, Japan Fishery Products, and Japans Useful Marine Products are called Japans Fishery. These were completed in 1895 for almost ten years since the compilation project was launched in 1886 at the Agricultural and Commercial Ministry. Japan Fishing Method selected, improved and recorded excellent fishing and fishing methods in various Japanese regions at that time whereas Japan Fisheries Products chose excellent fish products from various methods of manufacturing and recorded the enactment and sale of fishery products. Japans Useful Marine Products is not currently passed on, so it is not known what kind of useful marine products are recorded. However, it can be assumed that the classification method of the Japanese ...

The only Gulf of Maine fishes with which one might confuse an anchovy are young herring, smelt, or silversides, but it is easily distinguished from the former by the wide mouth, as just noted; by its much larger eye; by the relative positions of the fins with the dorsal wholly behind the ventrals instead of over them and with the latter originating close behind the tips of the pectorals when these are laid back against the body; and by its much longer anal fin. The lack of an adipose fin behind the dorsal is sufficient to separate anchovy from smelt at a glance, while the silversides (Menidia) have two dorsal fins instead of one. The anchovy has large, thin, easily detached scales and a deeply forked tail. This species may be distinguished from the striped anchovy by the fact that its anal fin originates under the front of the dorsal; by its more or less diffuse lateral band of silver; by its more numerous anal fin rays (24 to 27 contrasted with 20 or 21 for the striped anchovy), and by its ...

New Limit for Mercury in Predatory Fish. The amendments also include a new limit for mercury in predatory fish. Previously, the legal limit was 0.5 ppm (parts per million) of mercury for any fish or fish product. Some species of predatory fish that contain more than 0.5 ppm of mercury were not allowed in Singapore. Such fish accumulate a higher level of mercury due to the types of animals they prey on. Since predatory fish are less frequently consumed in Singapore compared to other species of fish, they are not considered to be a significant source of mercury to the average human diet. Therefore, AVA amended the Food Regulations to specify a maximum level of 1 ppm for mercury in predatory fish. This is aligned to requirements in major developed countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the European Union. The limit of 0.5 ppm for mercury in other fish and their products remains unchanged.. Plant Sterols, Stanols, and their Esters. Lastly, the amendments introduced changes to the ...
WD Caviar Green vs Black. Western Digital, or better known as WD, is one of the leaders in the Hard Drive industry. Western Digital has come out with many types of hard disks, and the more widely used ones are the Caviar Green and Black. Well, almost everyone is so confused when it comes to choosing WD Caviar Green and Black hard disks, as they have many differences.. Let us discuss some of the differences between WD Caviar Green and Black hard drives. When talking about their performance, the WD Caviar Blacks performance is better than the Greens. The WD Caviar Black is noisy, and also consumes more power. On the other hand, the WD Green is considered to be a hard drive for general use. The WD Green makes less noise, and has a more efficient power consumption rate.. Well, the WD Caviar Green hard drive starts at 86 mb/s, and comes to an end at 65 mb/s. Moreover, the WD Green has heavy NCQ optimisation, and is known to work well under many disk loads. On the other hand, the WD Black starts at ...
Myanmar will be able to export farmed marine products to the European Union (EU) starting from May 1, said U Thet Naing, deputy director of the Quality Control and Research Division of Fisheries Department.. Up until recently, the EU had only permitted imports of fish caught in the wild. From next week onwards, this will expand to include seven farmed fish, two prawn and one crab species.. These include the Rohu, Mrigal, Katla and Carfu fish species, river catfish, barbus fish, spotted prawn, white prawn and soft shell crab.. We have been trying to export farmed fisheries to the EU since 2014. It is a difficult process and only a few countries in Asia have permission to do so. Wild fish exports to the EU make up only 3 percent of total fisheries exports. If farmed fish products can be exported, Myanmar will be able to increase its total marine exports to the EU, said U Thet Naing.. Of the 23 factories which export fish caught in the world to EU, 17 will also be able to export selected farmed ...

Antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities of protein hydrolysates from Argentine croaker (Umbrina canosai) protein isolate (CPI) or Argentine croaker myofibrillar protein with different degrees of hydrolysis (DH: 10-20%) prepared using Alcalase or Protamex were determined. Results showed that an increase in the DH resulted in higher content of hydrophobic and aromatic amino acids (AAAs) and in a decrease in molecular weight (MW) distribution for all hydrolysates obtained. Furthermore, the enzyme and raw material used influenced the amino acid content and MW determined. Hydrolysates from CPI with a 20% DH by Alcalase had higher 2,2ʹ-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical scavenging activity, metal chelation, and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (p , 0.05). All hydrolysate samples decreased the pro-inflammatory capacity. In all the evaluated microorganisms, only seven were inhibited, most being Gram-positive. Alcalase was found to exert a considerable ...
Aquaculture or fish farming accounts for over 50% of the world market for fish products. As global populations continue to increase, wild populations of commercially captured fish can no longer support this demand. Aquaculture provides an efficient means of protein production. In the US great strides have been taken by the industry to insure best management practices for the sustainability, consistency, economic feasibility, food safety, and environmentally friendly ways for farmed fish and shellfish production.. ...
Lactobacillus sakei is an important food-associated lactic acid bacterium commonly used as starter culture for industrial meat fermentation, and with great potential as a biopreservative in meat and fish products. Understanding the metabolic mechanisms underlying the growth performance of a strain to be used for food fermentations is important for obtaining high-quality and safe products. Proteomic analysis was used to study the primary metabolism in ten food isolates after growth on glucose and ribose, the main sugars available for L. sakei in meat and fish. Proteins, the expression of which varied depending on the carbon source were identified, such as a ribokinase and a D-ribose pyranase directly involved in ribose catabolism, and enzymes involved in the phosphoketolase and glycolytic pathways. Expression of enzymes involved in pyruvate and glycerol/glycerolipid metabolism were also affected by the change of carbon source. Interestingly, a commercial starter culture and a protective culture strain

A molecular approach was developed to distinguish species of red snappers among commercial salted fish products. The specific fragments of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene, which were about 450bp, were obtained using the semi-nested polymerase chain reaction (semi-nested PCR). Subsequently, PCR arnplicons were sequenced, aiming to select restriction endonucleases that generated species-specific restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) profiles. Discrimination of red snappers Lutjanus sanguineus, Lutjanus erythopterus from Lutjanus argentimaculatus, Lutjanus malabarius and other morphologically similar fishes such as Lethrinus leutjanus and Pinjalo pinjalo was feasible by one restriction digestion reaction with three endonucleases Hae III, Sca I and SnaB I, however, for discrimination of L. sanguineus and L. erythopterus, another restriction digestion reaction with single restriction endonuclease Mae II was needed. The semi-nested PCR-RFLP was demonstrated to be reliable in species ...

If you read ingredient lists youll find sugars listed everywhere; from ketchup and mayonnaise to cold cuts and fish products. There is even a separate listing for sugar under the carbohydrate heading on nutrition labels. Most, although not all, of these sugars are the added variety.. And dont be fooled into thinking that certified organic sugar is any better for you-its not. This is just part of the deception.. Sugar is also hidden in many packaged, frozen, canned and otherwise processed food, sometimes not listed on the label. The ongoing name game with labeling is meant to deceive consumers, with food lobbyists petitioning governmental regulation so the products dont look so bad. It was not long ago, for example, that the only ingredient in peanut butter was listed as peanuts. But a sizable amount of sugar was added too. That particular loophole has been closed, but we usually only hear about these types of tricks after the fact, so beware of any packaged or prepared item. The same is ...

This study conducted to investigate the impact of raw material freshness on the quality and hygienic safety of anchovy fish sauce and suggest the importance of raw material freshness to make high-quality and hygienic anchovy fish sauce by measuring the chemical compositions and histamine. To devide the raw materials freshness levels, raw anchovy was left for 24 hours and was sampled every 4 hour(Group I-VII). As a result, the levels of VBN(volatile basic nitrogen) and histamine increased as time passed each contents were 16.29-87.65 mg/100 g and 6.14-1499.63 mg/100 g respectively. As fish sauce fermented for 18 months, the contents of VBN were 205.31-270.51 mg/100 g and histamine were 120.54-1707.22 mg/100 g, respectively. These results means the levels of VBN and histamine of raw materials are significantly associated with the hygiene of anchovy fish sauce. To investigate the reason of different contents of histamine at each fish sauce, bacteria from each groups were isolated and identified. ...

Now the caviar grader comes to taste the caviar. There are three factors that the caviar is graded on. Each element is worth a point. First is the size of the eggs. Eggs between 3.2 -2.4 mm in diameter are given a point. Next are the pop and the taste. If the eggs pop well between your tongue and the roof of your mouth, they get a point. Then the taste will also receive a point - or not. The caviar now should have a grade of 0-3, which will determine the grade it receives: Classic, Royal, and if it is a Royal grade and is light in color, is graded as an Imperial,. Each tin will get a color dot that indicates what grade of caviar is in the tin. Even though color can vary from golden to black, it has nothing to do with quality and taste. Color is purely a preference of the individual, explains Struffenegger. ...
