Abandonment of terminally ill patients in the Byzantine era. An ancient tradition? (1/196)

Our research on the texts of the Byzantine historians and chroniclers revealed an apparently curious phenomenon, namely, the abandonment of terminally ill emperors by their physicians when the latter realised that they could not offer any further treatment. This attitude tallies with the mentality of the ancient Greek physicians, who even in Hippocratic times thought the treatment and care of the terminally ill to be a challenge to nature and hubris to the gods. Nevertheless, it is a very curious attitude in the light of the concepts of the Christian Byzantine physicians who, according to the doctrines of the Christian religion, should have been imbued with the spirit of philanthropy and love for their fellowmen. The meticulous analysis of three examples of abandonment of Byzantine emperors, and especially that of Alexius I Comnenus, by their physicians reveals that this custom, following ancient pagan ethics, in those times took on a ritualised form without any significant or real content.  (+info)

Alexander Pope (1688-1744): his spinal deformity and his doctors. (2/196)

Alexander Pope was the towering figure of 18th century England. A poet and a wit he commanded unswerving loyalty from his friends and penetrating hatred from his enemies. His spinal deformity, either due to tuberculosis, trauma or congenital weakness, shaped his career. This brief report highlights the illness and the medical men who were involved in treating Alexander Pope.  (+info)

Michelangelo: art, anatomy, and the kidney. (3/196)

Michelangelo (1475-1564) had a life-long interest in anatomy that began with his participation in public dissections in his early teens, when he joined the court of Lorenzo de' Medici and was exposed to its physician-philosopher members. By the age of 18, he began to perform his own dissections. His early anatomic interests were revived later in life when he aspired to publish a book on anatomy for artists and to collaborate in the illustration of a medical anatomy text that was being prepared by the Paduan anatomist Realdo Colombo (1516-1559). His relationship with Colombo likely began when Colombo diagnosed and treated him for nephrolithiasis in 1549. He seems to have developed gouty arthritis in 1555, making the possibility of uric acid stones a distinct probability. Recurrent urinary stones until the end of his life are well documented in his correspondence, and available documents imply that he may have suffered from nephrolithiasis earlier in life. His terminal illness with symptoms of fluid overload suggests that he may have sustained obstructive nephropathy. That this may account for his interest in kidney function is evident in his poetry and drawings. Most impressive in this regard is the mantle of the Creator in his painting of the Separation of Land and Water in the Sistine Ceiling, which is in the shape of a bisected right kidney. His use of the renal outline in a scene representing the separation of solids (Land) from liquid (Water) suggests that Michelangelo was likely familiar with the anatomy and function of the kidney as it was understood at the time.  (+info)

The eye injury of King Philip II and the skeletal evidence from the royal tomb II at Vergina. (4/196)

The Royal Tomb II was discovered in Vergina, Greece, in 1977. It contained a male skeleton and a rich array of grave goods. Evidence of trauma supposedly in the orbital bones of the skull has been thought to correspond to an eye injury that King Philip II is historically known to have suffered. However, reexamination of the orbital morphology showed no evidence of such pathology. Therefore, the skeleton does not belong to Philip II. New skeletal evidence shows that the skeleton belongs to King Philip III Arrhidaeus. In this case, the tomb may well contain some of the paraphernalia of Alexander the Great.  (+info)

Marcel Proust (1871-1922): reassessment of his asthma and other maladies. (5/196)

Marcel Proust endured severe allergies and bronchial asthma from early childhood. Those who suffer from the frightening and recurrent pangs of asthma often become dependent on their parents particularly mother; Proust was no exception. In his time asthma was poorly understood by physicians who considered the illness to be a type of hysteria. Decades later, we now understand that the severe, poorly controlled, suffocating episodes of asthma were responsible for the complex persona that Marcel Proust had assumed.  (+info)

Effect of death of Diana, princess of Wales on suicide and deliberate self-harm. (6/196)

BACKGROUND: The death of the Princess of Wales in 1997 was followed by widespread public mourning. Such major events may influence suicidal behaviour. AIMS: To assess the impact of the Princess's death on suicide and deliberate self-harm (DSH). METHOD: Analysis, using Poisson regression, of the number of suicides and open verdicts ('suicides') in England and Wales following the Princess's death compared to the 3 months beforehand, and the equivalent periods in 1992-1996. Similar analysis on DSH presentations to a general hospital. RESULTS: Suicides increased during the month following the Princess's funeral (+17.4%). This was particularly marked in females (+33.7%), especially those aged 25-44 years (+45.1%). Suicides did not fall in the week between the death and the funeral. Presentations for DSH increased significantly during the week following the death (+44.3%), especially in females (+65.1%). Examination of case notes suggested that the influence of the death was largely through amplification of personal losses or exacerbation of existing distress. CONCLUSIONS: The death of a major public figure can influence rates of suicidal behaviour. For DSH, the impact may be immediate, but for suicide it may be delayed.  (+info)

Deafness and liver disease in a 57-year-old man: a medical history of Beethoven. (8/196)

Ludwig van Beethoven had a number of medical conditions, including deafness and chronic liver disease, for which there are contemporary descriptions. An autopsy was performed on the day after his death. Physicians and historians have tried to reinterpret original sources to determine the causes of his deafness and systemic illnesses. We have reviewed the differential diagnoses that have been proposed by otologists and physicians. Clinical and post-mortem findings point to renal papillary necrosis and liver cirrhosis of unknown aetiology. In the absence of further histological examination, there is no definitive answer to the cause of his deafness and gastro-intestinal symptoms.  (+info)

Celebrity Cultures in Canada is an interdisciplinary collection that explores celebrity phenomena and the ways they have operated and developed in Canada over the last two centuries. The chapters address a variety of cultural venues-politics, sports, film, and literature-and examine the political, cultural, material, and affective conditions that shaped celebrity in Canada and its uses both at home and abroad. The scope of the book enables the authors to highlight the trends that characterize Canadian celebrity-such as transnationality and bureaucracy-and explore the regional, linguistic, administrative, and indigenous cultures and institutions that distinguish fame in Canada from fame elsewhere. In historicizing and theorizing Canadas complicated cultures of celebrity, Celebrity Cultures in Canada rejects the argument that nations are irrelevant in todays global celebrityscapes or that Canada lacks a credible or adequate system for producing, distributing, and consuming celebrity. The explosion of media and the contraction of the world 1 improved conditions for celebrity. Two other factors, internal to celebrity itself, also changed, one having to do with process, the other with content. Celebrities were discovered by marketers. Whitefield and Washington had not pursued their careers for the money, and famous entertainers, such as the great actors from the days of the Globe Theater on, had made money only for themselves and their companies. What was new in the nineteenth century was the impresario of the career of others, the figure whose profession was promoting celebrity. The American archetype was Phineas Taylor Barnum. After several unsuccessful careers (a stint in journalism was cut short by a libel suit), Barnum took up showmanship. His first great attraction was a fraud: Joice Heth, a black woman whom he billed as more than 160 years old and as George Washingtons nurse. When Heth died in 1836, it was discovered that she had been no older than 70. Barnum kept ...

In his youth, Dostoevsky enjoyed reading Nikolai Karamzins History of the Russian State, which praised conservatism and Russian independence, ideas that Dostoevsky would embrace later in life. Before his arrest for participating in the Petrashevsky Circle in 1849, Dostoevsky remarked, "As far as I am concerned, nothing was ever more ridiculous than the idea of a republican government in Russia." In an 1881 edition of his Diaries, Dostoevsky stated that the Tsar and the people should form a unity: "For the people, the tsar is not an external power, not the power of some conqueror ... but a power of all the people, an all-unifying power the people themselves desired."[121]. While critical of serfdom, Dostoevsky was skeptical about the creation of a constitution, a concept he viewed as unrelated to Russias history. He described it as a mere "gentlemans rule" and believed that "a constitution would simply enslave the people". He advocated social change instead, for example removal of the feudal ...

This group was called insecurely attached, and avoidant. As the article notes, "an intense-personal interest in celebrities was best predicted by low levels of security and closeness with parents." Being a celebrity comes with a lot of cool stuff - money, mansions, private jets, Twitter followers by the millions. Not included, however, is guaranteed immunity from accident or illness. Celebrity can also be dangerous, with stunts, stage shows and dodging paparazzi. And if a star is sidelined, the big paycheck can turn into big losses. Here are five celebrities who probably wished they had disability insurance. Lady Gaga is the MVP of celebrity mishaps. A concussion on stage didnt stop her from finishing a concert. Gaga has vomited while performing...on more than one occasion. And, those shoes have publicly tripped her up over and over again. The saturation of access to celebrities has made it possible to separate the puppets from their handlers, to tangle their strings and see their blank-eyed duplicity fall limply to the ground, allowing us to howl with laughter as the puppeteers scramble to regain control over the marred image that results. Whether through Twitter overshares or viral videos of our once-revered puppets drunkenly singing into a cheeseburger, the awkwardness and pain of those exposed nerves of truth have become the soul of new media. They are the life force of that lumbering circus giant, reality TV. To see this high-wire moment of scrambling to maintain the puppet, literally borne out in an improv puppeteer performance last night on The Celebrity Apprentice was mind-blowing. And meta: Trump is nothing more than an aggrandized puppet master to this sad and downtrodden cavalcade of B-list celebrities. The image and legend of Santa Claus is something that has been built over centuries and stems from a historical character, St. Nicholas. Nicholas was a third-century figure born in the then-Greek and now-Turkish village of Patara. When his wealthy parents died early in his life, Nicholas used his inheritance to follow the Christian teachings he had learned. He gave everything he had inherited to aid the sick and the suffering.. Promoted to Bishop of Myra as a young man, he suffered persecution, exile, and imprisonment under the anti-Christian Roman emperor Diocletian. Upon his release, Nicholas attended the Council at Nicaea in A.D. 325. Though his name does not appear on all existing lists of attendees, his presence is corroborated on the oldest existing Greek list, as well as five others. Many of the most accurate legends of Nicholas involve him saving innocents and the unjustly persecuted from prison. When he died on December 6, A.D. 343, legend says that an unusual liquid substance called ...

Johnson claims that "two of his [Darwins] grandparents and his father can reasonably be classified as geniuses". Although he amends that sweeping statement and says that whether Robert actually "was a genius is a matter of opinion, but he was certainly remarkable", he quickly returns to it. Robert was a doctor, and his "genius" is found in his "immediate, physical contact with the patient, on first diagnosis, on visits, and at every point in the course of the condition". Erasmus was an "imaginative genius", Josiah an "empirical genius", and Robert an "intuitive genius". Darwin was the "progeny" of genius, Johnson says, and so "had access to a gene pool of the highest possible quality" (while critical of Darwin, Johnson nevertheless uses Darwinian language). Fortunately for the reader, after the first chapter, genius is quickly dropped in favour of luck. "Throughout his long life, Darwin was an extremely lucky man," Johnson says. "Of all the great scientists in history, he was the most favored ...

MS Caribbean Princess is a modified Grand Class cruise ship owned and operated by Princess Cruises, with a capacity of over 3,600 passengers, the largest carrying capacity in the Princess fleet until June 2013 when the new Royal Princess, another Princess ship superseded its record. She has 900 balcony staterooms and a deck of mini-suites. She was the first modern cruise ship with an outdoor theater, which Princess bills as "Movies Under The Stars".[citation needed] Caribbean Princess is slightly larger than the other ships in her class (Star Princess, Golden Princess, and Grand Princess), due to the addition of an additional deck of cabins called the Riviera deck. Another difference is that, being initially designed to cruise the Caribbean year-round, there is no sliding roof over the pool area for shelter in poor weather. On March 12, 2012, Caribbean Princess suffered an issue to her port side propulsion engine, which required her to return to her home port of San Juan, Puerto Rico after a ...

I laid the blame on my Jordanian VCR operator (the one carrying the field recorder) who was too bloody slow to keep up; thus causing the cable to stretch across the neck of, and almost garrote, said prince. The Saudi prince didnt really count as a celebrity as theyre endemic in the region, but the Jordanian VCR operator had shared a boarding ...

These two A+ list celebrities/singers used to be very good friends. Never great friends, but the older of the two was willing to pass on her torch to what she thought was a worthy successor.
