This report presents a case of a patient with multiple tooth fractures in posterior teeth that were diagnosed several months following emergency intubation.. Although it is probably not a rare complication of general anesthesia, with a reported incidence that ranges from less than 1% to more than 12% of cases, its presented characteristics extremely varies among studies (de Sousa and Mourao 2015; Vogel et al. 2009; Adolphs et al. 2011; Burton and Baker 1987).. It had been reported that generally the incidence of tooth injuries caused by intubation increases with age. In addition it had been reported that elderly patients suffer more from tooth luxation or avulsion due to age related chronic marginal periodontitis and attachment loss, and in contrast, younger patients primarily suffer from tooth fractures (Vogel et al. 2009). However, in the current case an ...

Teeth are strong - and by practicing good home care with regular, professional cleanings and check-ups, youre working to keep them strong! But however diligent you may be at using these procedures, thus protecting your teeth cavities and erosion, we still cant guarantee that accidents wont happen. And, unfortunately, accidents can lead to fractured teeth.Fractured teeth are the second leading cause of tooth loss in adults, with the first being periodontal or gum disease.
The centre of a tooth contains connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves, collectively known as dental pulp. The areas of dental pulp within a root are called root canals. If this tissue dies or becomes damaged, toothache or an abscess may result. Traditionally these teeth were extracted but now a root canal treatment can be offered. Circumstances in which a root canal treatment may be recommended include decay, deep fillings, trauma, tooth fracture and infection.. Your dentist will take an x-ray to determine the health and location of the dental pulp. Your dentist will drill a hole through the top of your tooth to access the root canals. They will clean and shape the root canals with a dental file and wash with a sterilising solution. The root canals can then be filled with a permanent filling.. Some teeth requiring root canal treatment are so badly damaged they will require a crown. These teeth are also weaker than natural teeth and a ...
Common pediatric trauma can happen during falls, baseball injury, bicycle accidents and more. The trauma can vary from a simple lip laceration to a tooth fracture and even a fracture in the jaw bones. The goal of treatment is to save the permanent (adult) teeth.
Ahwatukee Animal Care Hospital 10855 South 48th Street Phoenix AZ 85044 Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen by veterinarians. Over 80% of dogs over the age of three years have active dental disease. However, few dogs show obvious signs of dental disease. Therefore, it is important to have annual dental examinations and professional cleanings to uncover this hidden and often painful condition. Tooth decay in dogs is not as common as it is in humans. Rather, the most common dental problems seen in dogs are fractured teeth and periodontal disease. Most tooth fractures occur when dogs chew on objects that are too hard, such as ice cubes, nylon chews, bones, antlers, and horse hoofs. Any chew toy or dental treat fed to a dog should have some give and bend upon compression in order to help prevent fractured teeth. Normally, the center of the tooth, called pulp, is ...

A method for assembling a population of ferrules to minimize the eccentricity of the fibers typically includes the steps of selecting a set of ferrules, determining the eccentricity of the ferrules, selecting a fiber, inserting the fiber within the ferrule bore, orienting the fiber within the ferrule, and securing the fiber in place. The result is a population of ferrules that can be mated with little or no insertion loss.

The potential of a plant species to acquire nutrients depends on its ability to explore the soil by its root system. Co-cultivation of different species is anticipated to lead to vertical root niche differentiation and thus to higher soil nutrient depletion. Using a qPCR-based method we quantified root biomass distribution of four catch crop species in vertical soil profiles in pure vs. mixed stands. Pure stands of mustard and phacelia robustly reached 70 cm soil depth, while oat preferably colonized upper soil layers, and clover developed the shallowest and smallest root system. Analysis of residual nitrate pools in different soil depths and correlation with root biomass showed that, besides rooting depth also root biomass determines soil nitrogen depletion. While occupying the same vertical niches as in pure stands, mustard and phacelia dominated total root biomass of the mix. In contrast, root biomass of clover and oat was severely suppressed in presence of the other species. Below-ground biomass
DISCUSSION. The mean fracture resistance results observed in the present study (Table 2) are higher than the mean bite force values reported by Lyons15 (1990) for canine teeth of approximately 22 kgf. In contrast, patients with bruxism presented a bite force of almost 26 kgf and the maximum bite force in the canine region ranged from 32 to 35 kgf.. In a study using the finite element method, Joshi, et al.13 (2001) observed that among all factors that interfere with the stress distribution pattern, post diameter and geometry contribute less to an increase or decrease of stresses in the tooth. In the present study, geometry was found to modify the stress distribution pattern (Figure 7), as demonstrated by Lewgoy, et al.14 (2003).. Posts do not reinforce debilitated teeth9, a fact that might be explained mechanically1,17. Cementation of a post during root treatment alters the load distribution pattern along its axis. The crack starts in the region of highest stress concentration (compressive or ...

If an injury causes a tooth to be completely knocked out of your mouth, it is important that you seek treatment immediately! It is important to keep the avulsed tooth moist. If possible, put it back into the socket. A tooth can be saved if it remains moist. You can even put the tooth in milk or a glass of water (add a pinch of salt). Root canal treatment may be necessary based upon the stage of root development. The length of time the tooth was out of your mouth and the way the tooth was stored may influence the type of treatment you receive and how successful the outcome.. ...
Understanding the risk for traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) and performing trauma first aid when they occur can encourage positive oral health outcomes.
The aim of the present study was to test the association between social vulnerability and the prevalence of traumatic dental injury (TDI). A population-based cross-sectional study was carried out with 1,556 schoolchildren aged 11 to 14 years in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The participants were examined for TDI using Andreasens criteria and those diagnosed with TDI were interviewed to determine the history of the injury. The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) was used for socioeconomic classification, which addresses environmental, cultural, economic, legal and security/survival dimensions. The Poisson regression model was used for the multivariate analysis, with the significance level set at 5%. The prevalence of TDI was 14.1%; 59.3% of the participants with TDI did not seek a dentist after the incident. Poorer environmental, economic and legal conditions were statistically associated with the occurrence of untreated TDI (p | 0.05) and all the five SVI dimensions were associated with seeking a

Something unusual is happening in the field of endodontics. While new products are continuously being introduced by the major manufacturers they are still sticking to themes that were espoused over 25 years ago, namely greater tapered instruments used in either continuous or interrupted rotation. The preparations these instruments make are being challenged in the literature as weakening the roots by literally taking too much dentin away during canal preparation and producing dentinal microcracks that under the forces of obturation, post placement and function can propagate into full blown vertical root fractures. Many of the designs introduced and accepted by the major opinion leaders in endodontics are being rejected because of their documented detrimental effects. Endodontists who at an earlier time praised the greater tapered shaping now look at these preparations as being excessive ...

There have been a number of epidemiological studies of maxillofacial fractures completed mostly in metropolitan cities of South Africa,8,10 but no ...
A fiber optic connector holder is sized to fit within an opening for mounting a fiber optic adapter. The fiber optic connector holder is configured to permit a fiber optic connector with a dust cap positioned about a ferrule and a polished end face of an optical fiber held by the ferrule to be inserted within and releasably held by the connector holder. A system for holding fiber optic connectors includes a fiber optic connector holder mounted within an opening in a bulkhead for mounting a fiber optic adapter. The fiber optic connector holder is configured to receive a fiber optic connector with a dust cap mounted about a ferrule and polished end face of an optical fiber held by the ferrule. A optical fiber connector may be held to a bulkhead when the fiber optic connector includes a dust cap mounted about a ferrule and a polished end face of an optical fiber held by the ferrule.
When performing capillary GC, it is critical to use the correct nut/ferrule combination. Improper nut/ferrule combinations can create dead volume (empty space that is not swept by carrier gas), resulting in poor chromatography (fronting peaks and/or band broadening).
One of the major problems of all-ceramic restorations is their probable fracture under occlusal force. The aim of the present in vitro study was to compare the effect of two marginal designs (chamfer and deep chamfer) on the fracture resistance of al
If a permanent tooth has been knocked out of its socket (avulsed), immediate attention is required. First, recover the tooth - and if its dirty, gently clean it off with water. Try not to touch the root portion of the tooth. Next, if possible, place the tooth back into its socket (making sure it is in the proper orientation), and apply gentle, sustained pressure to the area for five minutes. You can use a wad of wet tissue or gauze to help grasp and hold the tooth in place. Objectives : To determine the fit of ceramic inlays manufactured using a recently introduced CAD/CAM-system (Decim) and of two types of laboratory-made heat-pressed ceramics (IPS Empress and Opc).. Materials and methods : Extracted human premolars were prepared to receive mesio-occlusodistal (MOD) ceramic inlays, for which 10 Denzir, 10 IPS Empress, and 10 Opc were fabricated. The Denzir restorations were produced by the manufacturer of the CAD/CAM-system, and the IPS Empress and Opc by student dental technicians. Before luting the internal fit on the diestone models and on the premolars was determined using replicas. After luting on the premolars with a resin composite the marginal and internal fit were measured. The values were analyzed statistically using ANOVA and Scheffes test at a significance level of p,0.05.. Results : Before luting there were no significant differences ( p,0.05) in the internal gap width between the three systems studied when placed on their matching diestone models. ...

If a tooth is completely knocked out of your mouth, time is of the essence. The tooth should be handled very gently, avoiding touching the root surface itself. If it is dirty, quickly and gently rinse it in water. Do not use soap or any other cleaning agent, and never scrape or brush the tooth. If possible, the tooth should be placed back into its socket as soon as possible. The less time the tooth is out of its socket, the better the chance for saving it. Call a dentist immediately!. If you cannot put the tooth back in its socket, it needs to be kept moist in special solutions that are available at many local drugstores (such as Save-A-Tooth). If those solutions are unavailable, you should put the tooth in milk. Doing this will keep the root cells in your tooth moist and alive for a few hours. Another option is to simply put the tooth in ...

A gender selectable fiber optic connector is provided which can be readily converted between male and female configurations following assembly and polishing of the connector. The gender selectable fiber optic connector includes a housing, a ferrule operably connected to the housing such that a forward portion of the ferrule extends beyond the housing, and a shroud adapted to be mounted upon the forward portion of the ferrule such that the forward portion of the ferrule extends through a passageway defined by the shroud. In order to alter the gender of the fiber optic connector, the shroud has both male and female configurations. In this regard, the male configuration of the shroud includes at least one guide pin extending lengthwise through the passageway defined by the shroud for engaging a lengthwise extending alignment groove defined by the ferrule in order to produce a male fiber optic connector. In contrast, the female configuration of the shroud is free of guide pins such that mounting the female

Cox regression analysis revealed that fiber post retention significantly improved tooth survival (p , 0.001). Failure risk was lower in teeth restored with ...
A sound knowledge of mechanical properties of rocks at high temperatures and pressures is essential for modelling volcanological problems such as fracture of lava flows and dike emplacement. In particular, fracture toughness is a scale-invariant material property of a rock that describes its resistance to tensile failure. A new fracture mechanics apparatus has been constructed enabling fracture toughness measurements on large (60 mm diameter) rock core samples at temperatures up to 750-C and pressures up to 50 MPa. We present a full description of this apparatus and, by plotting fracture resistance as a function of crack length, show that the size of the samples is sufficient for reliable fracture toughness measurements. A series of tests on Icelandic, Vesuvian and Etnean basalts at temperatures from 30 to 600-C and confining pressures up to 30 MPa gave fracture toughness values between 1.4 and 3.8 MPa m1=2. The Icelandic basalt is the strongest material and the Etnean material sampled from the ...
Introduction: Orthodontic cases managed by extraction of maxillary central incisors are very uncommon, but certain conditions necessitate their extraction. This article reports a case of adolescent boy with a history of trauma to the maxillary incisors. Patient was treated with extraction of both the maxillary central incisors followed by space closure and lateral incisors substituting for central incisors.
At the present time, in Costa Rica did not exist a national research on dental trauma, an issue that has become a worldwide public health problem. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries of permanent maxillary incisors. Thus, 1 626 Costa Rican school students of 12 years old were evaluated. The national prevalence of children with at least one fracture was 20.17 %, males showed a higher prevalence than women (p < 0.05). Moreover, it was observed that the group of students with more than 6 mm of overjet had a higher prevalence of fractures (p < 0.05 ...

Tooth resorption is a process by which all or part of a tooth structure is lost due to activation of the bodys innate capacity to remove mineralized tissue, as mediated via cells such as osteoclasts. Types include external resorption and internal resorption. It can be due to trauma, infection, or hyperplasia. Internal resorption is an unusual condition where the dentin and pulpal walls begin to resorb centrally within the root canal. The first evidence of the lesion may be the appearance of a pink-hued area on the crown of the tooth; the hyperplastic, vascular pulp tissue filling in the resorbed areas. This condition is referred to as a pink tooth of Mummery, after the 19th century anatomist James Howard Mummery. The cause can sometimes be attributed to trauma to the tooth, but other times there is no known cause. If the condition is discovered before perforation of the crown or root has occurred, endodontic therapy (root ...
The restoration of anterior teeth is frequently a demanding mission. Patients generally have high expectations for the anterior region, which makes the emotional side of treatment especially important. When this involves discolored endodontically treated teeth, consensus can hardly ever be found as to the chosen approach. Bleaching with direct composites is undoubtedly the most conservative choice for these cases. However, this may require more maintenance (touch-up bleaching and repairs) in the long term, which is an important issue for adult patients. On the other hand, bonded porcelain veneers represent a more high-end option, as they recover the original biomechanics of the intact tooth, allow an optimal masking of the substrate, remain stable, and have a reasonable biological cost when compared to full-coverage crowns. This strategy is explained in this article and documented with a clinical case. We describe treatment planning based on the biomimetic concept, taking into consideration ...
Results: Approximately 36% (n = 325) recalled the occurrence of dental trauma, but only 23.8% (n = 216) of children had visible signs of dental trauma to the permanent incisors (girls [18.8%], boys [29.9%], OR = 0.54; 95% CI 0.40- 0.74; p = 0.000). The maxillary central incisors were commonly injured (69.5%). The most frequent types of injuries were the enamel fracture (59.0%), craze lines (16.3%), and enamel and dentin fracture (13.4%). Tooth avulsion was seen in 0.7%. No significant association was found between dental trauma and increased overjet of > 3 mm (p = 0.328), but a tendency was identified for overjet > 5 mm (OR = 1.51; 95% CI 0.89-2.58; p = 0.060). The relationship between DT and lip coverage was statistically significant (OR = 1.63; 95% CI 1.18-2.25; p = 0.003). Violence (30%) and fall (22.7%) were the main causes of DT ...

This article has a couple of flaws. The SAT test does NOT measure intelligence, at best it measures reasoning skills to a specific set of problems. It was designed to test how well students would do in a college setting. So therefore you are using a test that showed students would do poorly in college and trying to equate it to their intelligence level, which any psychologist would tell you is difficult and requires numerous tests to get even close. Second off, you are measuring this against people who PASSED college. Therefore they defied the odds and did well in college despite the SATs prediction that they would not do so… Perhaps it does not do so well at measuring this?. Second, the SAT is notoriously culturally and ethnically biased. An aboriginal for instance would do very poorly on the SAT, but your 1600 SAT student would die in the outback after 20 min… Not because either of them is stupid, but because they are out of their element. The SAT was designed by rich academics from New ...
The investigation was concerned with the study of the mechanisms of crack propagation in plain concrete when subjected to static, high sustained or high repeated compressive loads. The objectives were: (1) to study the nature of progressive crack growth of concrete under such loading conditions, and (2) to formulate a conceptual model which describes crack extension at a given stress, as well as the manner in which failure of concrete takes place. The first objective was accomplished by developing a technique which allowed continued observation of progressive crack growth on the surface of plain concrete prisms under load. Strains were recorded throughout the life of each specimen. The effect of the load history, the maximum stress level, and the surface condition of the specimen on the nature of crack growth were investigated. On the basis of the study of surface crack growth and the examination of failed specimens it was possible to formulate a conceptual model which explains the failure ...
Replacing both missing maxillary interior teeth is particularly challenging, especially in compromised sockets. The case report describes the management of an 18-year-old female patient, who suffered avulsion of both maxillary central incisors at 7 years of age. The multidisciplinary implant technique, called Immediate Dentoalveolar Restoration (IDR), included extraction of the injured teeth and a single procedure for immediate implant placement and restoration of the compromised sockets after root fracture and peri-apical lesion development were detected during orthodontic treatment. Successful esthetic and functional outcomes and reestablishment of the alveolar process after bone reconstruction were observed during the 3-year follow-up period. The predictable esthetic outcomes and soft and hard tissue stability that can be achieved following IDR are demonstrated. ...

Introduction: This study evaluated the influence of cast-gold posts on the diagnostic ability of a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) system in assessing longitudinal root fractures. In addition, the influence of gutta-percha and variations in voxel resolution were assessed. Methods: One hundred eighty endodontically prepared teeth were divided into 3 experimental and 3 control groups and placed in a dry human skull. The teeth in the experimental groups were artificially fractured. Certain experimental and control groups were filled with gutta-percha cones. Other experimental and control groups were filled with cast-gold posts. All the teeth were viewed by using a tomography scan with 2 voxel resolution protocols (0.3-mm and 0.2-mm). A calibrated examiner, blinded to the protocol, assessed the images by using the nominated scan software. Results: The kappa values obtained for intraobserver reproducibility were 0.84 and 0.93 for 0.3-mm and 0.2-mm voxel resolution, ...
Fractured teeth The two main types of crown fracture seen in veterinary medicine are complicated and uncomplicated. Both types require therapy; however treatment for each is often different. All teeth with direct pulp exposure (complicated crown fractures) should be treated with endodontic or exodontic therapy; ignoring them is NOT an option. Prior to tooth necrosis, the viable nerve is excruciatingly painful. Following tooth death, the root canal system will act as a bacterial super-highway creating not only local infection, but also a bacteraemia which has been linked to more serious systemic diseases. The owners of these patients will be reluctant to pursue therapy as "It does not seem to bother the dog". Fractured and/or infected teeth do bother the pet and they will act better following therapy. Veterinary patients are known for being stoic, and therefore lack of outward signs of oral pain ...

A ceramic inlay is the alternative to a conventional plastic tooth coloured filling (composite).. While with fillings deformable materials are introduced directly into the tooth, the indirect fillings (inlays) are produced outside of the mouth - in the dental laboratory.. The tooth is prepared for minimally invasive in the first session, moulded and temporized. The subsequent laboratory makes the ceramic inlay which in the second appointment is then glued in the tooth. Their advantage lies in the very long life, the biologically good compatibility and optimal aesthetics.. Often no difference to the natural tooth is visible.. ...

Upon occasion, when a live nerve becomes irritated (in this case due to the close proximity of the filling), it may become "sick" and forget its usual function of remaining inert and keeping the tooth hydrated. When this happens, it may start to eat away at the very tooth that it is supposed to be protecting. The image above shows a dark (radiolucent) area in the distal (back) root next to the furcation (where the two roots join together). This radiolucency represents a hole in the tooth structure at that point. The nerve simply ate away the tooth from the inside out. This hole is an example of internal resorption.. The reason that this defect is labeled internal/external resorption is that a second phenomenon can cause the same defect. This involves cells in the periodontal ligament which forget their usual function of supporting the root of the tooth. If this happens, these external cells may eat the same hole in the ...

In determining the fracture toughness of a test specimen, standards currently require either locally-measured load-line displacements or clip gage displacements. In order to measure these parameters, secondary sensors generally need to be installed and calibrated, which often comes at a higher cost. As crosshead displacements are automatically measured in most modern material test machines, use of the crosshead measurements alone would be less expensive. Although much criticism exists on the accuracy of this approach in determining CTOD values, the method can still prove sufficiently accurate for many applications. The current paper aims to assess the magnitude of the errors that arise from using the crosshead displacement in fracture mechanics testing of steels with the Single Edge Notched Bending (SENB) specimen geometry. The results show that for steels with sufficiently large toughness, the use of the crosshead displacement to calculate J and convert to CTOD produces results within 10% of ...

At issue is the mechanical strength of so-called "low-k" dielectric layers-electrically insulating films only a couple of micrometers thick that are interleaved between layers of conductors and components in microprocessor chips and other high-performance semiconductor devices. As IC features like transistors have gotten ever smaller and crammed more closely together, designers are preventing electrical interference or "cross-talk" by making the insulating films more and more porous with nanoscale voids-but this has made them more fragile. Brittle fracture failure of low-k insulating films remains a problem for the industry, affecting both manufacturing yields and device reliability. To date, there has been no accurate method to measure the fracture resistance of such films, which makes it difficult to design improved dielectrics.. NIST researchers believe they have found an answer to the measurement problem in a new adaptation of a materials test technique called nanoindentation. ...
Fatigue cracking in polycrystalline NiTi was investigated using a multiscale experimental framework for average grain sizes (GS) from 10 to 1500 nm for the first time. Macroscopic fatigue crack growth rates, measured by optical digital image correlation, were connected to microscopic crack opening and closing displacements, measured by scanning electron microscope DIC (SEM-DIC) using a high-precision external SEM scan controller. Among all grain sizes, the 1500 nm GS sample exhibited the slowest crack growth rate at the macroscale, and the largest crack opening level (stress intensity at first crack opening) and minimum crack opening displacements at the microscale. Smaller GS samples (10, 18, 42, and 80 nm) exhibited nonmonotonic trends in their fatigue performance, yet the correlation was strong between macroscale and microscale behaviors for each GS. The samples that exhibited the fastest crack growth rates (42 and 80 nm GS) showed a small crack opening level and the largest crack opening ...
