ERYTHROCYTE size and HEMOGLOBIN content or concentration, usually derived from ERYTHROCYTE COUNT; BLOOD hemoglobin concentration; and HEMATOCRIT. The indices include the mean corpuscular volume (MCV), the mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC).
Red blood cells. Mature erythrocytes are non-nucleated, biconcave disks containing HEMOGLOBIN whose function is to transport OXYGEN.
The semi-permeable outer structure of a red blood cell. It is known as a red cell 'ghost' after HEMOLYSIS.
The senescence of RED BLOOD CELLS. Lacking the organelles that make protein synthesis possible, the mature erythrocyte is incapable of self-repair, reproduction, and carrying out certain functions performed by other cells. This limits the average life span of an erythrocyte to 120 days.

Iron supplemented formula milk related to reduction in psychomotor decline in infants from inner city areas: randomised study. (1/460)

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of unmodified cows' milk and iron supplemented formula milk on psychomotor development in infants from inner city areas when used as the main milk source. DESIGN: Double blind, randomised intervention trial. SETTING: Birmingham health centre. SUBJECTS: 100 infants, mean age 7.8 months (range 5.7 to 8.6 months), whose mothers had already elected to use unmodified cows' milk as their infant's milk source. INTERVENTION: Changing to an iron supplemented formula milk from enrolment to 18 months of age, or continuing with unmodified cows' milk. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Developmental assessments using Griffiths scales at enrolment and at 18 and 24 months. RESULTS: 85 participants completed the trial. There were no significant differences in haemoglobin concentration between the two groups at enrolment, but by 18 months of age 33% of the unmodified cows' milk group, but only 2% of the iron supplemented group, were anaemic (P<0.001). The experimental groups had Griffiths general quotient scores that were not significantly different at enrolment, but the scores in both groups declined during the study. By 24 months the decrease in the mean scores in the unmodified cows' milk group was 14.7 whereas the decrease in the mean scores in the iron supplemented group was 9.3 (P<0.02, 95% confidence interval 0.4 to 10.4). Mean subquotient scores were considerably lower in the unmodified cows' milk group at 24 months; significantly so for personal and social scores (P<0.02, 1.2 to 16.8 [corrected]). CONCLUSION: Replacing unmodified cows' milk with an iron supplemented formula milk up to 18 months of age in infants from inner city areas prevents iron deficiency anaemia and reduces the decline in psychomotor development seen in such infants from the second half of the first year.  (+info)

Stomatocytosis is absent in "stomatin"-deficient murine red blood cells. (2/460)

To examine the relationship between erythrocyte membrane protein 7. 2b deficiency and the hemolytic anemia of human hereditary stomatocytosis, we created 7.2b knock-out mice by standard gene targeting approaches. Immunoblots showed that homozygous knock-out mice completely lacked erythrocyte protein 7.2b. Despite the absence of protein 7.2b, there was no hemolytic anemia and mouse red blood cells (RBCs) were normal in morphology, cell indices, hydration status, monovalent cation content, and ability to translocate lipids. The absence of the phenotype of hereditary stomatocytosis implies that protein 7.2b deficiency plays no direct role in the etiology of this disorder and casts doubt on the previously proposed role of this protein as a mediator of cation transport in RBC.  (+info)

Evidence that microdeletions in the alpha globin gene protect against the development of sickle cell glomerulopathy in humans. (3/460)

There is a large variability in the severity of the clinical manifestations of sickle cell anemia (SSA), including renal involvement. Haplotypes in the beta-globin gene cluster associated with the geographical origin of the sickle mutation, as well as microdeletions in the alpha-globin genes, could provide an epigenetic influence on the heterogeneous outcome in SSA. It has been determined that the cause of progressive renal insufficiency in SSA is a glomerulopathy, clinically detected by the presence of macroalbuminuria (albumin excretion rate >300 mg/g creatinine). To investigate the role of the alpha-globin gene microdeletion and beta-globin gene cluster haplotypes on the degree of glomerular involvement, 76 adult SSA patients (hemoglobin SS) were studied to determine the relationship between these genetic markers and the development of sickle cell glomerulopathy. Macroalbuminuria was present in 22 (29%) of 76 adult SSA patients. The coinheritance of microdeletions in one or two of the four alpha-globin genes (alpha-thalassemia) was associated with a lower prevalence of macroalbuminuria (13%) versus patients with intact alpha-globin genes (40%, P = 0.01). By contrast, there was no association between albuminuria and beta-globin gene haplotypes (Central African Republic [CAR] versus non-CAR haplotypes). Patients with alpha-globin gene microdeletions had lower mean corpuscular volumes and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration than patients with all four alpha genes (86+/-2 versus 99+/-3 fl, and 33.9+/-0.2 versus 34.9+/-0.2%, respectively, P<0.05). There were no such hematologic differences between CAR and non-CAR beta-globin haplotypes. There were no differences in duration of disease (age), hemoglobin levels, reticulocyte index, and lactate dehydrogenase levels between those with and without glomerulopathy, but the mean arterial pressure was higher (87+/-1 mm Hg) in patients with intact alpha gene locus versus those with microdeletions (80+/-2 mm Hg, P<0.05). It is concluded that the coinheritance of microdeletions in the alpha-globin gene locus in SSA patients confers "renoprotection" by mechanisms not related to the degree of anemia or the severity of hemolysis, but could be related to a reduced mean corpuscular volume or to a lower erythrocyte hemoglobin concentration.  (+info)

The contribution of alpha+-thalassaemia to anaemia in a Nigerian population exposed to intense malaria transmission. (4/460)

The proportion to which alpha-thalassaemia contributes to anaemia in Africa is not well recognized. In an area of intense malaria transmission in South-West Nigeria, haematological parameters of alpha-thalassaemia were examined in 494 children and 119 adults. The -alpha3.7 type of alpha+-thalassaemia was observed at a gene frequency of 0.27. Nine and 36.5% of individuals were homozygous and heterozygous, respectively. P.falciparum-infection was present in 78% of children and in 39% of adults. The alpha-globin genotypes did not correlate with the prevalence of P. falciparum-infection. alpha+-thalassaemic individuals had significantly lower mean values of haemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, and mean corpuscular haemoglobin than non-thalassaemic subjects. Anaemia was seen in 54. 7% of children with a normal alpha-globin genotype, in 69.9% of heterozygous (odds ratio: 1.99, 95% confidence interval: 1.32-3.00, P = 0.001), and in 88.4% of homozygous alpha+-thalassaemic children (odds ratio: 7.72, 95% confidence interval: 2.85-20.90, P = 0.0001). The findings show that alpha+-thalassaemia contributes essentially to mild anaemia, microcytosis, and hypochromia in Nigeria.  (+info)

Nisoldipine improves the impaired erythrocyte deformability correlating with elevated intracellular free calcium-ion concentration and poor glycaemic control in NIDDM. (5/460)

AIMS: To explore the mechanisms underlying the impaired erythrocyte deformability (RBC-df) in diabetic patients, the relationship between erythrocyte intracellular free calcium-ion concentration ([Ca2+]i) and RBC-df, and the effects of Ca2+-channel blocker on [Ca2+]i and RBC-df were evaluated. METHODS: Forty-eight patients with NIDDM and 24 control subjects were enrolled in this study. [Ca2+]i was determined using fura-2, and RBC-df by filtration method expressed as Deformability Index (DI). Erythrocytes were treated with nisoldipine to evaluate the effects of a Ca2+-channel blocker. RESULTS: [Ca2+]i was significantly higher (82.6 (78.0-87.2) vs 76.6 (74.3-81.2) nmol lRBC-1, P<0.001), and DI was significantly lower (0. 14 (0.09-0.28) vs 0.22 (0.16-0.28), P<0.01) in NIDDM than in controls. There was a significant correlation between HbA1c and [Ca2+]i (r=0.38, P<0.01), between HbA1c and DI (r=-0.51, P<0.01), and between [Ca2+]i and DI (r=-0.42, P<0.01). Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed HbA1c and [Ca2+]i as independent determinants for the impaired RBC-df. Nisoldipine treatment in vitro significantly decreased [Ca2+]i, and significantly improved RBC-df. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate that the impaired RBC-df in NIDDM may at least partly be attributed to the elevated [Ca2+]i and poor glycaemic control. In addition, favorable effects of a Ca2+-channel blocker on both [Ca2+]i and RBC-df have been demonstrated.  (+info)

Red cell indices and discriminant functions in the detection of beta-thalassaemia trait in a population with high prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia. (6/460)

Red cell indices and discriminant functions were studied in 463 heterozygous beta-thalassaemics (337 without iron deficiency, 126 with iron deficiency) and 195 patients of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) to ascertain their utility in the detection of betathalassaemia trait (BTT). Majority of traits in both groups had an elevated RBC count (> or = 5.0 x 10(12)/L). The counts were significantly higher than of patients with IDA, only 4.6% of whom had this degree of erythrocytosis. Mean Hb concentration was significantly higher in traits as compared to iron deficient subjects (p < 0.0001). Mean MCV and MCH were significantly (p < 0.0001) lower in traits more so in those with ID as compared to patients of IDA. MCV < 80 fl and MCH < 27 pg were found to be sensitive markers in the detection of traits even in the presence of ID. Of the four discriminant functions studied MCSQ was found to be most sensitive in detection of BTT and it identified 97.9% traits. DF of England and Fraser was most specific for BTT being < 8.4 in only 6.2% patients with IDA. Detection of erythrocytosis especially in the presence of mild anaemia and calculation of discriminant functions derived from red cell indices were found to play an important role in screening for BTT even in the presence of ID and helped identify those patients who required further laboratory evaluation.  (+info)

Factors determining the percentage of hypochromic red blood cells in hemodialysis patients. (7/460)

Factors determining the percentage of hypochromic red blood cells determines iron status in hemodialysis patients. BACKGROUND: Determination of the percentage of hypochromic red blood cells (RBC; %HYPO) has been advocated as a sensitive index of functional iron deficiency during erythropoietin (EPO) therapy in hemodialyzed patients. METHODS: The significance of %HYPO in chronic renal failure was evaluated in 64 chronically hemodialyzed patients. The linear correlation was determined between %HYPO and 13 variables, including age, sex, weight, C-reactive protein (CRP), ferritin, transferrin (Tf), Tf saturation, soluble Tf receptor (sTfR), serum iron (SI), urea, parathormone, dialysis dose (Kt/V), dose of EPO administered (EPO), and absolute reticulocyte count. Multiple regression analyses were then performed to select the parameters that jointly provide the best prediction of %HYPO. RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed significant correlations between %HYPO and iron parameters (sTfR, Tf saturation, SI, and ferritin, in decreasing order), EPO, reticulocyte count, and CRP. Multivariate analysis yielded an equation showing that the variation of %HYPO is essentially associated with the combined changes in sTfR, CRP, and EPO dosage. CONCLUSIONS: %HYPO is a meaningful and inexpensive parameter that reflects the integrated effects of iron stores, inflammation, and erythropoietic stimulation on iron availability in hemodialyzed patients. Among iron exchange parameters, sTfR is the best predictor of %HYPO, followed by Tf saturation, SI, and ferritin.  (+info)

Influence of age, alcohol consumption and abstinence on the sensitivity of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin, gamma-glutamyltransferase and mean corpuscular volume. (8/460)

Duration of abstinence before blood test, alcohol consumption and age was examined in 177 male alcohol-dependent patients as factors influencing serum carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT), serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). The strongest influence on all markers was the factor 'duration of abstinence before blood test'. In patients who had been abstinent for >4 days before the blood test, the markers had low sensitivities (GGT, 33%; CDT, 14%; MCV, 42%), whereas in patients with < or = 4 days of abstinence the markers had reasonably good sensitivities (GGT, 72%; CDT, 56%; MCV, 48%). GGT was more sensitive than CDT (P < 0.05) and MCV (P < 0.001). The combined use of CDT and GGT had sensitivity of over 90%. Mean alcohol consumption in the 30 days prior to the blood test had a significant effect on CDT and GGT, but not on MCV. Age did not have a clear effect on CDT and GGT. For MCV, a significant and linear increase with age was shown. We conclude that GGT is the most sensitive of these three markers. Using GGT and CDT combined, sensitivity can be enhanced to over 90%. The period of abstinence before the blood test has a strong influence on CDT and GGT. If a longer period of abstinence is suspected, MCV should also be measured, in order to detect evidence of earlier heavy drinking.  (+info)

Background: Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a biomarker for cardiovascular disease(CVD). RDW is associated with sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) in adults. To date, no study has evaluated this association in children. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between RDW and SB and PA levels of children and adolescents. Methods: This observational study included data from participants aged 12-20 years in the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). SB and PA were measured using accelerometers. Activity levels were classified into intensity categories. Sex specific multivariable regression analyses (adjusted for covariates) were used to explore the associations between SB, PA and RDW. Results: The study included 2143 children and adolescents (1080 boys and 1063 girls). In the fully adjusted regression model for boys, SB was positively associated with RDW (β =0.116,P=0.004) while moderate PA was negatively associated with RDW (β =-0

Objective: To examine the association between elevated levels of red cell distribution width (RDW) and cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in HIV-patients. Methods: Cross-sectional study including all asymptomatic HIV-outpatients under follow-up during 2007. Patients completed a questionnaire about CVRF, underwent a physical examination, and an 8-hour fasting blood analysis. Elevated RDW was defined as ≥75th percentile. Patients with and without an elevated RDW were compared. Results: 666 patients (79.3% men) were included: mean age 44.7 years, mean CD4 506/mm3 and 87.5% on antiretroviral therapy (85.3% with undetectable viral load). Mean RDW was 13.7% (range: 7.7% - 33.6%; 75th percentile, 14.1%). The prevalence per quartile of MS was 15.7%, 9.3%, 18.8% and 16.6% and of patients with CVRF > 20% was 8.4%, 4.0%, 4.4%, and 6.4%, respectively (p > 0.05); 23.4% of the patients had an elevated RDW (>14.1%). The top percentile of RDW was associated with AIDS (OR 1.6; 95%
Background: Higher red cell distribution width (RDW) is an independent predictor of greater morbidity and mortality in the general population and in myocardial infarction, coronary disease, heart failure (HF), and other patient sets. We aimed to study the predictive ability of RDW and change in RDW (ΔRDW) for length of stay (LOS) and 30-day outcomes for HF exacerbations.. Methods: Electronic query of Intermountain Healthcare medical records identified patients (N=6,414) with a primary diagnosis of HF who were discharged in 2004-2013, had RDW measured within 24 hours after admission, and had RDW tested at least once more during the same hospitalization. ΔRDW was calculated as the last RDW within 24 hours prior to discharge minus the first RDW. All patients were aged 65 years or older and were discharged alive and not to hospice.. Results: Average age was 78.9±7.8 years and 50.2% were female. Median LOS by ΔRDW quartiles was Q1: 4.1, Q2: 3.4, Q3: 3.6, and Q4: 4.7 days (p-trend,0.001), and by ...
Aim: Although the relationship between red cell distribution width (RDW) and hypertension has been well documented, there is an absence of data on the association between RDW and preeclampsia. Body mass index (BMI), the prevalent indicator of obesity, is not easily grasped by patients nor physicians. Waist circumference (WC) is correlated to obesity, is better understood and has a stronger relationship to the metabolic syndrome. We compiled WC, complete blood count (CBC) parameters as well as other pertinent data of 6766 25-55-year-old US volunteers sampled in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, in the years 2005-2010. To determine reference intervals of typical US patients visiting their clinician, we used minimal exclusion criteria. We compiled hemoglobin, red blood cell count, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), red cell distribution width (RDW), platelet count, mean platelet volume, and counts of white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. In addition, we also compiled serum C reactive protein and serum iron. The three major US races were ...
The third step in working up an anemia is to assess red cell size (i.e., volume - the mean corpuscular volume [MCV], normal range ca. 80-100 femtoliters) and size distribution (the red blood cell distribution width [RDW], a measure of circulating red cell size variability, attempts to quantitate the older descriptor for size heterogeneity:anisocytosis). An abnormal MCV can be very helpful in narrowing the likely source of anemia. Conversely, a normal MCV cannot be taken to rule out those sources typically associated with microcytosis (MCV, 80) or macrocytosis (MCV,100).. Microcytic anemias (MCV , 80) are invariably due to defects in hemoglobin production. This occurs because of iron deficiency (by far the most common), thalassemia, sideroblastic anemias, or, uncommonly, the anemia of chronic inflammation. Thalassemia trait usually presents with profound microcytosis and mild to moderate anemia (MCV, 70, Hct, 30), in iron deficiency the MCV rarely falls below 80 until the anemia is significant ...

Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a hematological parameter usually measured with every complete blood count. Its place in daily practice is mainly in the differential diagnosis of anemia, but nowadays, researchers are focused on different approaches for the erythrocytes changes in function and morphology.. Sepsis and its most advanced form, septic shock, induces profound disturbances into organ systems function and morphology. The red blood cells physiology and structure are directly and indirectly altered by these im balances produced in sepsis. RDW was studied in many diseases, like acute heart failure, acute stroke, inflammatory bowel diseases, chronic lung diseases and cancer, but also in sepsis. Its changes are seen to be mainly associated with prognosis. Higher values of RDW are correlated with mortality and severity of illnes in septic and all-cause critically ill patients. RDW was studied also as an independent variable in different predictive scores and some studies suggest ...
Treat iron deficiency in a menstruating woman. The most appropriate treatment is oral ferrous sulfate. Iron deficiency can result from blood loss or malabsorption in addition to increased iron use. Women of reproductive age may lose enough iron through normal menstrual blood loss to become iron deficient in the absence of uterine or gastrointestinal disease. Patients with mild iron deficiency may note fatigue, lack of sense of well-being, irritability, decreased exercise tolerance, and headaches before symptoms of overt anemia occur. This patient has signs and symptoms of iron deficiency, likely secondary to menstrual blood loss. The peripheral blood smear in patients with iron deficiency is remarkable for microcytic, hypochromic erythrocytes, with marked anisopoikilocytosis (that is, abnormalities in erythrocyte size and shape). The variation in the size of erythrocytes is quantified in the red blood cell distribution width (RDW) measurement. An increased RDW is most often associated with a ...
Supplementary MaterialsS1 Checklist: PRISMA 2009 checklist. belonged to Group A, 9 research belonged to Group B and 17 studies belonged to Group C. Among these included studies, RDW was assessed as a continuous variable (per 1% increase) in 16 studies, like a binary variable in CTSD 8 studies, and as a categorical variable in 8 studies. In addition, AUCs (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve) of RDW for predicting mortality were reported in 25 studies. All studies were published between 2011C2015. The qualities of included 32 studies were moderate or high. Conclusion The present systematic review indicates the increased RDW is definitely significantly associated with a higher mortality rate in an non-cardiovascular emergency. The low cost and readily accessible of this laboratory variable may strengthen its usefulness in daily practice in the future. Systemic inflammatory response is closely related to the development and prognosis of liver failure. This study aimed to establish a new model combing the inflammatory markers including neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) with several hematological testing indicators to assess the prognosis of patients with hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF). A derivation cohort with 421 patients and a validation cohort with 156 patients were recruited from three hospitals. Retrospectively collecting their clinical data and laboratory testing indicators. Medcalc-15.10 software was employed for data analyses. Multivariate analysis indicated that RDW, NLR, INR, TBIL and Cr were risk factors for 90-day mortality in patients with HBV-ACLF. The risk assessment model is COXRNTIC = 0.053 × RDW + 0.027 × NLR + 0.003 × TBIL+ 0.317 × INR + 0.003 × Cr (RNTIC) with a cut-off value of 3.08 (sensitivity: 77.89%, specificity: 86.04%). Correlation analysis between the hematological parameters mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) for thalassemia screening in large population was discussed. A total of 4920 peripheral blood samples of reproductive age persons were collected from Guangdong province of China. The hematological parameters MCH and MCV values of samples were first measured, and then the DNA analyses for thalassemia were conducted. All samples were composed by 4463 non-thalassemia and 457 thalassemia, and among 457 thalassemia samples, 311 were α-thalassemia, 133 were β-thalassemia, and 13 were α & β-thalassemia. In accordance with non-thalassemia, thalassemia, α-thalassemia, β-thalassemia, α & β-thalassemia and the entire group itself, a total of six sample groups were divided. The corresponding correlation coefficients between the measured MCH and MCV values for the six sample groups were 0.880, 0.968, 0.966, 0.962, 0.980 and 0.965 respectively. For the thalassemia carriers, highly
The essential features of X-linked sideroblastic anemia include the following: (1) a hypochromic microcytic anemia and 2 discrete populations of red blood cells, one microcytic and the other normocytic; (2) marrow ringed sideroblasts, particularly prominent in the late erythroid precursors; (3) a variable hematologic response to pharmacologic doses of pyridoxine; and (4) systemic iron overload secondary to chronic ineffective erythropoiesis. The age of clinical onset of the disorder can vary from in utero to the ninth decade. Whereas males are preferentially affected, females may present with clinically severe anemia. More commonly, female carriers of the disease have an increased red blood cell distribution width and sometimes erythrocyte dimorphism ({18:Fleming, 2002 ...
Red blood cell indices are blood tests that provide information about the hemoglobin content and size of red blood cells. Abnormal values indicate the presence of anemia and which type of anemia it is. Blood profiles Haematology values are shown in Table 4. There was no significant change to the blood profile with T. bicornis infection, i.e. no significant change in haematocrit, red blood corpuscles (RBCs), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) or platelets (PLTs) (Table 4). There was a slight elevation in white blood corpuscles count (WBC) (leucocytosis) in infected animals, but the difference was not significant (P = 0.068; Mann-Whitney non-parametric test). DISCUSSION The prevalence of T. bicornis in the KNP white rhinoceros population is similar to that reported in Zululand (northern part of KwaZulu-Natal)1. The RLB hybridisation assay was not able to detect B. bicornis in any of the samples. These could be either true negative results or due to a very low B. bicornis parasitaemia which was below the detection limit of the test. Blood smears of a debilitated black rhinoceros in KNP showed erythrocytes ...

Hypochromic anemia is a generic term for any type of anemia in which the red blood cells (erythrocytes) are paler than normal. (Hypo- refers to less, and chromic means color.) A normal red blood cell will have an area of pallor in the center of it; it is biconcave disk shaped. In hypochromic cells, this area of central pallor is increased. This decrease in redness is due to a disproportionate reduction of red cell hemoglobin (the pigment that imparts the red color) in proportion to the volume of the cell. Clinically the color can be evaluated by the Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH) or Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC). The MCHC is considered the better parameter of the two as it adjusts for effect the size of the cell has on its color. Hypochromia is clinically defined as below the normal MHC reference range of 27-33 picograms/cell in adults or below the normal MCHC reference range of 33-36 g/dL in adults. Red blood cells will also be small (microcytic), leading to substantial ...
What is it? Mean corpuscular hemoglobin (abbreviated as MCH) is an estimate of the amount of hemoglobin in an average red blood cell. Hemoglobin is a substance in the blood that carries oxygen to the cells in the body from the lungs. High hemoglobin content is often referred to as hyperchromia, and low content, hypochromia.…
and monitored for changes in the blood profile using a haematological analyser. A chronic infection lasting between 48 and 112 days was observed. Microcytic hypochromic anaemia, which was characterized by a decline in packed cell volume (PCV), red blood cell (RBC) numbers, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCH) developed at an early stage, and persisted throughout the infection. The mean platelet counts declined significantly from 3 x 105/μl (day 0 post infection) to 6.8 x 104/μl (day 7 post infection) and remained low in all the animals. However, the mean platelets volume rose during the course of the infection. An initial decline in total white blood cell (WBC) counts occurred between day 0 and 7 (3.1 x 106/μl) and remained low up to day 35 post infection (3.5 x 106/μl). This was followed by an increase in WBC counts, principally associated with increased lymphocyte numbers. It is concluded that microcytic hypochromic anaemia, thrombocytopaenia ...

Identifying causal variants and genes from human genetic studies of hematopoietic traits is important to enumerate basic regulatory mechanisms underlying these traits, and could ultimately augment translational efforts to generate platelets and/or red blood cells in vitro. To identify putative causal genes from these data, we performed computational modeling using available genome-wide association datasets for platelet and red blood cell traits. Our model identified a joint collection of genomic features enriched at established trait associations and plausible candidate variants. Additional studies associating variation at these loci with change in gene expression highlighted Tropomyosin 1 (TPM1) among our top-ranked candidate genes. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated TPM1 knockout in human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) enhanced hematopoietic progenitor development, increasing total megakaryocyte and erythroid cell yields. Our findings may help explain human genetic associations and identify a novel genetic

A 5 week repeated dose toxicity of Jatropha tanjorensis leave powder was carried out in rabbits. Forty animals, male and female, were administered feed mash plus ground J. tanjorensis leaf powder in graded concentrations of 0, 5, 10 and 25%. All rabbits survived at the end of the study and results showed no significant alteration in average body weight in the treatment groups when compared with the control group. The haemoglobin, hematocrit, platelets and platelet cell distribution width in the female group, showed significant increase between the control and the treated groups. This is an indication of an improved bone marrow function. No severe histopathologic indicator was recorded ...
Wherever we are in the world there never seems to be enough money for healthcare provision. So the key is to make what resources we have go as far as possible. Any laboratory test that we request should always be preceded by the questions Why are we making the request, what are the possible results and what decisions might those results lead us to make? Then we should ask Have we gained all possible information from that test?. A simple examination of the blood (with an Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate / ESR) is probably the best example of this approach. It may appear very limited but a great deal of information can be obtained about systemic disease. Most hospitals and health centres have the facilities for these tests.. The commoner blood count and blood film abnormalities can be considered under the headings of chronic disorders, infections and diseases of the various systems. (Primary haematological diseases are excluded from the present discussion).. ...

(Standard deviation of RBC. volume/mean MCV) X 100. The normal value for RDW is 11.5% to 14.5%. The standard deviation of red cell volume is derived from size histogram data that plot red cell size after a large number of red cells has been analyzed by the instrument. The usefulness of the RDW is that in many cases the RDW will become abnormal earlier in the anemia process than the MCV Because many anemias (like iron deficiency anemias) develop over a period of time, this parameter may provide a sensitive indicator of red blood size change16 before the red cell indices become overtly abnormal.. The final item in the CBC is a platelet count. Information regarding ...
