Antimicrobial activities of synthetic bismuth compounds against Clostridium difficile. (1/518)

Clostridium difficile is a major nosocomial pathogen responsible for pseudomembranous colitis and many cases of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Because of potential relapse of disease with current antimicrobial therapy protocols, there is a need for additional and/or alternative antimicrobial agents for the treatment of disease caused by C. difficile. We have synthesized a systematic series of 14 structurally simple bismuth compounds and assessed their biological activities against C. difficile and four other gastrointestinal species, including Helicobacter pylori. Here, we report on the activities of six compounds that exhibit antibacterial activities against C. difficile, and some of the compounds have MICs of less than 1 microgram/ml. Also tested, for comparison, were the activities of bismuth subcitrate and ranitidine bismuth citrate obtained from commercial sources. C. difficile and H. pylori were more sensitive both to the synthetic bismuth compounds and to the commercial products than were Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus mirabilis, and the last three species were markedly resistant to the commercial bismuth salts. Testing with human foreskin fibroblast cells revealed that some of the synthetic compounds were more cytotoxic than others. Killing curves for C. difficile treated with the more active compounds revealed rapid death, and electron microscopy showed that the bismuth of these compounds was rapidly incorporated by C. difficile. Energy dispersive spectroscopy X-ray microanalysis of C. difficile cells containing electron-dense material confirmed the presence of internalized bismuth. Internalized bismuth was not observed in C. difficile treated with synthetic bismuth compounds that lacked antimicrobial activity, which suggests that the uptake of the metal is required for killing activity. The nature of the carrier would seem to determine whether bismuth is transported into susceptible bacteria like C. difficile.  (+info)

Pathological evaluation of the effects of intentional disocclusion and overloading occlusion in odontogenesis disorders in N-methylnitrosourea-treated hamsters. (2/518)

This study compares the effects of disocclusion and overloading occlusion on dental lesions. Ten-day-old Syrian hamsters were divided into 4 groups: group I, untreated animals; group II, animals whose hemilateral incisors were disoccluded; group III, N-methylnitrosourea (MNU)-treated animals; and group IV, MNU-treated animals whose hemilateral incisors were disoccluded. The ipsilateral maxillary and mandibular incisors were repetitively cut with diamond discs. The hamster is easier to anesthetize. Animals received a 0.2% solution of MNU (10 mg/kg body weight) intragastrically twice a week for 16 wk. All the cut mandibular incisors and the MNU-treated uncut mandibular incisors showed lack of iron deposition on the enamel surface. The eruption rate was significantly higher in the cut disoccluded incisors of groups II and IV (p < 0.05) and significantly lower in the uncut overloaded incisors of groups II and IV (p < 0.05). In the cut mandibular incisors of group IV, the degree of the disturbance of odontogenesis and the atypical proliferation of odontogenic epithelium were more prominent (p < 0.02), and the dental lesions occurred earlier. Histologically, the disturbed Hertwig's epithelial sheath and the Hertwig's epithelial sheath-like transformed U-shaped part and enamel organ seemed to lead to disturbances of amelogenesis and detinogenesis as well as to atypical proliferation of odontogenic epithelium nests. Thus, this method of disocclusion of the incisors of rodents may represent a useful model for the investigation of the effects of various agents on tooth formation over a short experimental period.  (+info)

Dentinal tubule occlusion with lanthanum fluoride and powdered apatite glass ceramics in vitro. (3/518)

To simulate hypersensitive dentin, the smear layer and dentinal plugs of bovine root dentin specimens were removed by immersion in 10% phosphoric acid, polishing with hydroxyapatite particles, and ultrasonic cleansing. The fluoride-tannic acid-lanthanum-apatite (FTLA) group was treated with acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) containing tannic acid followed by rubbing with a paste of lanthanum chloride (LaCl3) and powdered apatite glass ceramics. The treated specimens were immersed in a remineralizing solution that mimics saliva for 6 weeks. The SEM observations revealed that the treated surfaces of the FTLA group were completely covered with fine spherical compounds and the dentinal tubules were occluded with plugs to a depth of about 3 microns. Fluoride and lanthanum were detected to a depth of over 20 microns by EPMA observation. After the remineralization, the surface of FTLA-treated specimen did not have any opened tubules and showed a remarkable increase in the number of fine spherical deposits in the dentinal tubules. These results suggest that the reaction products produced by sequential treatment with acidic fluoride and LaCl3 and powdered apatite glass ceramics are able to effectively occlude dentinal tubules.  (+info)

Microstructure and homogeneity of dental porcelain frits. (4/518)

The microstructure and homogeneity of three commercial dentin and incisal unfired porcelain frits (one conventional and two ultra-low fusing types, fused-to metal were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microspectroscopy, and wavelength- and energy dispersive X-ray microspectroscopy. The average contents of tetragonal and cubic leucite for the conventional and one of the ultra-low fusing type frits were 20.1-22.6 wt% and 0-2.6 wt%, respectively, whereas those of another of the ultra-low fusing type frits were about 11.5-11.6 wt% and 2.9-4.6 wt%, respectively. The conventional type frits seemed to be admixtures of three kinds of glass frits. One of the ultra-low fusing type frits seemed to be an admixture of four kinds of glass frits. Another ultra-low fusing frits seemed to be only one kind of glass frit dispersed with small size, less than 1 micron, leucite crystals. There were no remarkable differences in microstructure and homogeneity between dentin and incisal porcelain frits in each brand.  (+info)

Adhesion of adhesive resin to dental precious metal alloys. Part II. The relationship between surface structure of Au-In alloys and adhesive ability with 4-META resin. (5/518)

Adhesion of 4-META to Au-In alloy was improved by adding In equivalent to .15% of Au content. On the basis of the results of Au-In alloys analyzed by XPS, the present study investigated the reason why adhesion of the Au-In alloy was improved. The O 1s spectrum could be separated into three oxygen chemical states, In2O3, chemisorbed H2O, and physisorbed H2O. The amount of chemisorbed H2O decreased remarkably with increasing amount of In. It is considered that the poor adhesive ability of the pure gold and alloys containing only small amounts of In was due to the chemisorbed H2O molecules and insufficient indium oxide on the alloy surface. It was established that excellent adhesion requires an oxide with chemical affinity for 4-META to cover at least 50% of the alloy surface.  (+info)

Histochemical and immunohistochemical analysis of the mechanism of calcification of Meckel's cartilage during mandible development in rodents. (6/518)

It is widely accepted that Meckel's cartilage in mammals is uncalcified hyaline cartilage that is resorbed and is not involved in bone formation of the mandible. We examined the spatial and temporal characteristics of matrix calcification in Meckel's cartilage, using histochemical and immunocytochemical methods, electron microscopy and an electron probe microanalyser. The intramandibular portion of Meckel's cartilage could be divided schematically into anterior and posterior portions with respect to the site of initiation of ossification beneath the mental foramen. Calcification of the matrix occurred in areas in which alkaline phosphatase activity could be detected by light and electron microscopy and by immunohistochemical staining. The expression of type X collagen was restricted to the hypertrophic cells of intramandibular Meckel's cartilage, and staining with alizarin red and von Kossa stain revealed that calcification progressed in both posterior and anterior directions from the primary centre of ossification. After the active cellular resorption of calcified cartilage matrix, new osseous islands were formed by trabecular bone that intruded from the perichondrial bone collar. Evidence of such formation of bone was supported by results of double immunofluorescence staining specific for type I and type II collagens, in addition to results of immunostaining for osteopontin. Calcification of the posterior portion resembled that in the anterior portion of intramandibular Meckel's cartilage, and our findings indicate that the posterior portion also contributes to the bone formation of the mandible by an endochondral-type mechanism of calcification.  (+info)

EXAFS study of zinc coordination in bacitracin A. (7/518)

Bacitracin is a dodecapeptide antibiotic produced by Bacillus sp. The antibacterial activity depends upon the peptide binding a divalent metal. Hitherto, the exact coordination of the cation has not been established. In particular the role played by the sulphur and nitrogen atoms of the thiazoline ring of bacitracin A has not been clear. Here the coordination of Zn2+ by bacitracin A has been studied using extended X-ray absorption fine structure. The experimental data are consistent with a model in which zinc is coordinated by one oxygen and three nitrogen atoms with the sulphur atom of the thiazoline ring not being directly involved in the zinc coordination.  (+info)

Plastic migration from implanted central venous access devices. (8/518)

BACKGROUND: This is the first reported study of histologically confirmed migration from intravenous access devices in children. METHODS: The capsules from around intravenous access devices were examined by light microscopy to determine the extent of the foreign body response; energy dispersive x ray analysis was performed to document the elemental content of the foreign material. RESULTS: A fibroconnective tissue capsule was found around all the samples. Elemental silicon was found in six of 13 tissue samples, and a foreign body giant cell reaction was seen in three of these. CONCLUSIONS: The pseudocapsule that surrounds an implanted vascular access device often has residual foreign material, including silicone.  (+info)

An alkaline hydrolysate of Bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki HD1 (Btk) parasporal crystals was administered at 25 micrograms ml-1 (f.c.) to isolated, short-circuited, midguts of tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) larvae. The short-circuit current (s.c.c.), a precise measure of K+ active transport, was inhibited by 78% in 10 min in Btk-treated midguts as compared to controls. The elemental concentrations of K, together with Na, Mg, P, S, Cl and Ca, as well as the water content, were determined by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPXMA) in the muscle cells, columnar cells and goblet cells, as well as in the extracellular goblet cavity and the bathing media. The average K concentration in the goblet cell cavity was 129 mmol/kg wet wt in control midguts but only 37 mmol/kg wet wt in Btk-treated midguts. Immobilized cells of a Citrobacter sp. can remove heavy metals from wastewaters by deposition ofmetals with enzymatically liberated phosphate. Nickel is not removed effectively by this technique, but Ni2+ can be intercalated into cell-bound, crystalline HUO2PO4 previously deposited enzymatically. This technique for efficient removal of Ni from solution has been generically termed microbially enhanced chemisorption of heavy metals(MECHM). The use of strontium-to-calcium (Sr/Ca) ratios in otoliths is becoming a standard method to describe life history type and the chronology of migrations between freshwater and seawater habitats in teleosts (e.g. Kalish, 1990; Radtke et al., 1990; Secor, 1992; Rieman et al., 1994; Radtke, 1995; Limburg, 1995; Tzeng et al. 1997; Volk et al., 2000; Zimmerman, 2000; Zimmerman and Reeves, 2000, 2002). Scanning electron microscopy of lung tissue, ashed at low temperature, and obtained from an insulation worker who had died of pleural mesothelioma, showed the presence of numerous inorganic particles and fibres. A regional variation in fibre concentration in different tissue samples was found, and the size distribution of naked fibres and asbestos bodies was determined. Abstract Cryosections of human red blood cells infected by Plasmodium falciparum were analyzed by energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis to determine the elemental composition of the parasites and their red cell hosts separately. The effects of two antimalarial drugs, qinghaosu and chloroquine, on potassium, sodium, and phosphorus concentrations were studied. Malarial infection causes a decrease in potassium concentration and an increase in sodium concentration in the host red cells. The drastic change in the cation composition, however, occurs only in red cells infected by late stage parasites (late trophozoite and schizont). Red cells infected by early stage parasites (ring stage) show only small changes in sodium concentration. Furthermore, the noninfected red cells in parasitized cultures show no difference in composition from those of normal red cells. Zinc (Zn2+) plays a pivotal role in many fundamental cellular processes. Zinc homeostasis is coordinated by zinc import, export and distribution. Both free and chelated zinc are stored in different intracellular spaces, forming a dynamic pool of coordination and interactions. Objective: Evidence suggests that abnormal iron metabolism is associated with Parkinson disease (PD), with raised iron levels found in pathologically affected areas in PD. It is unknown if this elevated iron is actually associated with neurons or reactive glia, and we therefore addressed this issue by determining if raised iron was present in single dopaminergic neurons.. Refractory-based high entropy alloys (HEAs) of the 2nd-generation type are new intensively-studied materials with a high potential for structural high-temperature applications. This paper presents investigation results on microstructural evolution and phase formation in as-cast and subsequently heat-treated HEAs at various temperature-time regimes. This paper describes an innovative process for the production of ferrochromium alloy via segregation reduction of chromite at 1300 °C in the presence of calcium chloride. Both charcoal and petroleum coke were used as the reductant. Individual polycrystalline ferrochrome carbide particles were produced, with their particle size and shape resembling that of the starting carbon particles. Interactions among calcium chloride, clinochlore, and chromite resulted in the formation of Ca-bearing chromite, wadalite, and gaseous chlorides. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) recently commissioned the development of a suite of over fifty well-characterized planetary analogue materials. These materials are terrestrial rocks and minerals that are similar to those known or suspected to occur on the lunar or martian surfaces. These include: Mars analogue sedimentary, hydrothermal, igneous and low-temperature alteration rock suites; lunar analogue basaltic and anorthositic rock suites; and a generic impactite rock suite from a variety of terrestrial impact structures. Representative thin sections of the materials have been characterized by optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). With ever more challenging (T,p) environments for cementing applications in oil and gas wells, there is a need to identify the fundamental mechanisms of fracture resistant oil well cements. We report results from a multi-technique investigation of behavior and properties of API class G cement and silica-enriched cement systems subjected to hydrothermal curing from 30 °C to 200 °C; including electron probe microanalysis, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry analysis, electron microscopy, neutron scattering (SANS), and fracture scratch testing. The results provide a new insight into the link between system chemistry, micro-texture and micro-fracture toughness. In previous evaluations, of GTA welding stainless steel plates the surfactant content in the workplace has been assumed to be in a state of equilibrium. However surfactant concentration usually had to be adjusted in order to achieve agreement between the weld pool shapes in experiments and those in simulations. In this study a physiochemical approach to the redistribution of surfactant at the surface and in the bulk is presented for the first time. Sulphur was considered as a represenative surfactant. The model allows surfactant molecular transport via convection, diffusion, and sorption. It is shown that sulphur atoms accumulate at the surface at stagnation points, affecting the coefficient of surface tension and thus the final weld pool shape. Abstract A potent (Na,K)-ATPase inhibitor purified from Sigma Grade* ATP has been identified as vanadium using electron probe microanalysis and confirmed by microwave-induced emission spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Sodium orthovanadate (Na3 VO4) is identical with the purified inhibitor with respect to ultraviolet absorbance, migration on thin layer chromatography, and inhibition of (Na,K)-ATPase. The (Na,K)-ATPase is in-inhibited 50% by 40 nM Na3 VO4 under optimal conditions (28 mM Mg2+) and the inhibition is 100% reversible by millimolar concentrations of norepinephrine. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multi-organ autosomal recessive disease of fluid-transporting epithelia, due to a mutation in the gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. CFTR is a cAMP-regulated Cl-channel involved in various regulatory processes. Salt and water transport depend on CFTR and the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC), operating in concert with the paracellular pathway through the tight junctions (TJ). Electron probe and ion probe are the two most used instruments for in situ analysis of halogens in geological materials. The comparison of these two methods on widely distributed glass standards (example: MPI-DING glasses, Jochum et al., G-cubed, 2006) provides a basis for establishing laboratory method, independent geochemical data sets for these elements. We report analyses of F, S, and Cl concentrations in three geological glass samples (EPMA) and 10 referenced standards (EPMA and SIMS). Furthermore, F and Cl absolute abundances have been determined independently for three of the standards (KL2-G, ATHO-G, and KE12), via heavy ion elastic recoil detection analysis (HIERDA), to certify the accuracy of the cross-calibration EPMA-SIMS. Field observations, petrography, electron microprobe analysis (EPMA), geothermometry, and geochemical analyses (ICP-MS and XRF) of the fluorspar deposit associated with the Late Cretaceous alkaline igneous-carbonatite complex at Okorusu (Namibia) have identified two previously unrecognized types of carbonatites, namely pyroxene and pegmatitic carbonatites. These carbonatites exhibit interesting textural characteristics, with the pyroxene carbonatite exhibiting occasional bands of diopside alternating with coarse-grained calcite-rich bands, and pegmatitic carbonatite having the same mineralogy but much coarser texture. Both types of carbonatites are closely spatially associated. Ülvospinel exsolution lamellae were recognized in magnetite crystals within the pyroxene and pegmatitic carbonatite. The crystal structure and chemical composition of a crystal of Mg(Mg,Cr,Si)2O4 post-spinel phase synthesized in the model system MgCr2O4-Mg2SiO4 at 16 GPa and 1600 °C have been investigated. The compound was found to crystallize with a distorted orthorhombic calcium-titanate (CaTi2O4) structure type, space group Cmc21, with lattice parameters a = 2.8482(1), b = 9.4592(5), c = 9.6353(5) Å, V = 259.59(1) Å3, and Z = 4. The structure was refined to R1 = 0.018 using 345 independent reflections. The loss of the inversion center is due to the ordering of cations at the octahedral sites: Cr is mainly hosted at the M1 site, whereas Si at the M2 site. Such an ordered distribution induces a distortion thus provoking a change in coordination of Mg, which becomes sevenfold-coordinated instead of the usual eightfold coordination observed in post-spinel phases. The new mineral, vanadoallanite-(La), found in the stratiform ferromanganese deposit from the Shobu area, Ise City, Mie Prefecture, Japan, was studied using electron microprobe analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Vanadoallanite-(La) is a rare-earth element-rich monoclinic epidote-supergroup mineral with simplified formula CaLaV3+AlFe2+(SiO4)(Si2O7)O(OH) (Z = 2, space group P21 /m) characterized by predominantly V3+ at one of three octahedral sites, M1. The crystal studied shows large V (∼8.4 V2O3 wt.%), Fe (∼13.8 Fe2O3 wt.%; Fe2+/total Fe = 0.58) and Mn (∼8.8 MnO wt.%) contents. A small amount of Ti is also present (∼1.3 TiO2 wt.%). The mineral formed as a sublimate from the volcanic gases and is associated with cristobalite, arcanite, thenardite, barite and native gold. The Deccan Traps, a 65 million-year-old continental flood basalt province located in western India, is the result of one of the largest short-lived magmatic events to have occurred on Earth. The nature and composition of its mantle source(s), however, have been difficult to resolve due to extensive assimilation of continental crust into the ascending Traps magmas. To circumvent this issue, using high-precision electron microprobe analysis, we have analyzed olivine grains from MgO-rich (up to 15.7 wt.%) lavas that likely erupted before substantial crustal assimilation occurred. We compare olivine, pyroxene and plagioclase mineral chemistry and He-O-Os isotope compositions with bulk rock major- and trace-element abundances and 187Os/188Os for both bulk-rocks and mineral separates. Segregation of P and Mo to prior austenite grain boundaries in a 2.25Cr1Mo steel subjected to neutron irradiation and ageing is examined using field emission gull scanning transmission electron microscopy (FEGSTEM) with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The steel samples are irradiated and aged at around 270 and 400 degrees C, respectively. The irradiation dose rate and dose are about 1.05 x 10(-8) dpa s(-1) and 0.032 dpa for 370 degrees C-irradiation, and 1.75 x 10(-8) dpa s(-1) and 0.13 dpa for 400 degrees C-irradiation. The FEGSTEM results indicate that, during 270 degrees C-irradiation, there is no irradiation effect for P segregation and some effect for Mo segregation with the Mo boundary concentration decreasing. Mineralogy and mineral chemistry data collected on unusual boninite samples (U1439C 15R-1, U1439C 25R-1) recovered during IODP Expedition 352 demonstrate highly variable mineral chemistries that suggest complex crystallization histories. The samples include early-crystallized olivines with embayed and reacted margins, some of which also show zoning (Fo87 cores; Fo77 rims), and large, euhedral pyroxene crystals, with clinoenstatite to pigeonite cores (En86 Fs12 Wo2, to En69 Fs12 Wo19), and augite rims (En43 Fs17 Wo40). Cr-rich spinels were found to be enclosed in both olivines and pyroxenes. These spinels show elevated Al2O3 and MgO contents (≈8-12%), suggesting early high pressure crystallization. Tea plants (Camellia sinensis) are well known for their ability to accumulate high concentrations of aluminium (Al). Aluminium distribution in tea leaves has been previously estimated on a qualitative basis using energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDXMA). However, no comprehensive studies have been earned out to quantitatively determine the distribution of Al, especially in young leaves which are used for the manufacture of commercial tea. Cuttings of C. sinensis var. sinensis grown in acidic soil were collected and young and old leaves were used for analysis. Total Al concentrations in young and old leaves were 380 and 6866 μg·g-1, respectively. The leaves were freeze-fractured and the quantitative distribution of Al and other elements such as Mg, Ca and K was determined using EDXMA. We performed complex physiological and metagenomic analyses to determine which microorganisms are the main driving agents responsible for self-purification of the mine waters and identify metabolic processes responsible for the observed features. SEM and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis showed accumulation of heavy metals on the mat surface, whereas, sorption experiments showed that neither microbial mats were completely saturated with heavy metals present in the mine waters, indicating that they have a large potential to absorb significant quantities of metal. The metagenomic analysis revealed that Methylococcaceae and Methylophilaceae families were the most abundant in both communities, moreover, it strongly suggest that backbones of both mats were formed by filamentous bacteria, such as Leptothrix,

Microwave energy is used to join high dielectric loss Si-SiC to Si-SiC with Al foil as an interlayer. Rapid heating with moderate applied pressure has led to excellent bond strength in a short time. The joining was successfully achieved in about 5 minutes at 1250 deg C and 1.2 MPa axial pressure in a single mode microwave cavity without damaging the samples. The joined specimen interfaces were examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The diffusion paths of Al were also detected with electron microprobe image mapping. Average fracture strength of the joined specimen was shown to be comparable to the original material strength using the four point bending fracture test. Stresses developing in a planar waveguide resulting from the different thermal expansion coefficients of the substrate and the three glass layers (buffer, core and cladding) were analyzed using a finite element method. It can be shown that mainly the thermal expansion of the overcladding determines the birefringence in the finished waveguide. Based on that result, recipes for an overcladding made with the flame-hydrolysis-deposition-(FHD)-process were devised. We demonstrate the absence of birefringence in a commercial waveguide layer overclad with this glass. The high doping levels required for the cladding to have a thermal expansion coefficient sufficient for this raises concerns about the moisture sensitivity of such a glass. Apatite crystals from two types of samples were analyzed by electron microprobe for 15 major and trace elements: (1) apatite in H2O- and S-saturated experimental charges of the 1982 El Chicho??n trachyandesite and (2) apatite in volcanic rocks erupted from 20 volcanoes. The SO3 contents of the experimental apatite increase with increasing oxygen fugacity (fo2), from ???0.04 wt% in reduced charges buffered by fayalite-magnetite-quartz (FMQ), to 1.0-2.6 wt% in oxidized charges buffered by manganosite-hausmanite (MNH) or magnetite-hematite (MTH). The extent of variation in elemental concentrations in different parts of the tooth, differences between species and individuals, and whether variation in elemental concentrations can provide information about dentine deposition mechanisms were assessed. No consistent patterns in elemental deposition in different parts of the tooth were found, but there were differences in concentrations between and within species. A new, non-destructive X-ray fluorescence technique for quantitative estimation of elemental content in biological tissues has been developed. Technical and instrumental characteristics of the ITRAX X-ray spectrometer have been evaluated in relation to the properties of biological samples, i.e., human hair fibers. Thus, attenuation variations of the fluorescent X-rays in the hair bulk mass were demonstrated by analysis of sulfur, calcium, and zinc in a virgin part near the root of one hair fiber with elliptical cross section. By rotation of the hair fiber and successive analyses made of the same part of the hair fiber, the results showed that concentrations of elements varied as functions of the diameter of the analyzed hair volume. The role of sodium chloride (NaCl) particles and ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) particles on the initial atmospheric corrosion of copper and zinc was investigated under in situ and ex situ conditions using microgravimetry, FTIR spectroscopy, ion chromatography, scanning electron microscopy with x-ray microanalysis and the scanning Kelvin probe. In Turner syndrome (TS) one X-chromosome is missing or defective. The amelogenin gene, located on the X-chromosome, plays a key role during the formation of dental enamel. The aim of this study was to find support for the hypothesis that impaired expression of the X-chromosome influences mineral incorporation during amelogenesis and, indirectly, during dentinogenesis. Primary tooth enamel and dentin from girls with TS were analysed and compared with the enamel and dentin of primary teeth from healthy girls. Qualitative and quantitative changes in the composition of TS enamel were found, in addition to morphological differences. Higher frequencies of subsurface lesions and rod-free zones were seen in TS enamel using polarized light microscopy. Similarly, scanning electron microscopy showed that the enamel rods from TS teeth were of atypical sizes and directions. The results are correlated with the coercivity of the magnets. The investigations revealed an identical microstructure in various Nd15Fe77B8 magnets, supplied by different producers. Besides the hard magnetic boride phase Nd2Fe14B, a soft magnetic boride phase close to Nd2Fe7B6 and a Nd-rich sintering aid phase were detected in the sintered magnets. In cast magnets additional Fe-phases occurred. Along grain boundaries a thin layer of the Nd-rich sintering aid phase was found. Here we report the first evidence on the reduced voltage and energy fade of LMR cathode by improving the atomic level spatial distribution of the chemical species. LMR cathode (Li[Li0.2Ni0.2M0.6]O2) prepared by co-precipitation and sol-gel methods are dominated by R-3m phase and show significant Ni-segregation at the surface of the particles.
