The sequence of transfers of matter and energy from organism to organism in the form of FOOD. Food chains intertwine locally into a food web because most organisms consume more than one type of animal or plant. PLANTS, which convert SOLAR ENERGY to food by PHOTOSYNTHESIS, are the primary food source. In a predator chain, a plant-eating animal is eaten by a larger animal. In a parasite chain, a smaller organism consumes part of a larger host and may itself be parasitized by smaller organisms. In a saprophytic chain, microorganisms live on dead organic matter.

Fusariotoxicosis from barley in British Columbia. I. Natural occurrence and diagnosis. (1/1326)

Clinical sickness was observed in domestic ducks, geese, horses and swine during October 1973. All species showed upper alimentary distress with mortalities occurring in the geese. Barley derived from a common source had been fed. Examination of the barley revealed invasion by Fusarium spp and detection of a high level of dermatitic fusariotoxins.  (+info)

Pathological changes in chickens, ducks and turkeys fed high levels of rapeseed oil. (2/1326)

Rations containing 25% of either regular rapeseed oil (36% erucic acid), Oro rapeseed oil (1.9% erucic acid), soybean oil or a mixture of lard and corn oil were fed to chickens, ducks and turkeys. The regular rapeseed oil ration caused growth depression, increased feed conversion and anemia in all species. All the ducks and some of the chickens fed the regular rapeseed oil ration died. These dead birds were affected with hydropericardium and ascites. No deaths in the turkeys could be attributed to the regular rapeseed oil ration but some turkeys fed this ration had degenerative foci characterized by infiltrations of histiocytic and giant cells in the myocardium. Severe fatty change in the heart, skeletal muscles, spleen and kidney was found at an early age in all birds fed the regular rapeseed oil ration. Less severe fatty change but no other lesions were found in birds fed the Oro rapeseed oil and soybean oil rations.  (+info)

A soluble form of the avian hepatitis B virus receptor. Biochemical characterization and functional analysis of the receptor ligand complex. (3/1326)

Avian hepatitis B virus infection is initiated by the specific interaction of the extracellular preS part of the large viral envelope protein with carboxypeptidase D (gp180), the primary cellular receptor. To functionally and biochemically characterize this interaction, we purified a soluble form of duck carboxypeptidase D from a baculovirus expression system, confirmed its receptor function, and investigated the contribution of different preS sequence elements to receptor binding by surface plasmon resonance analysis. We found that preS binds duck carboxypeptidase D with a 1:1 stoichiometry, thereby inducing conformational changes but not oligomerization. The association constant of the complex was determined to be 2.2 x 10(7) M-1 at 37 degreesC, pH 7.4, with an association rate of 4.0 x 10(4) M-1 s-1 and a dissociation rate of 1.9 x 10(-3) s-1, substantiating high affinity interaction of avihepadnaviruses with their receptor carboxypeptidase D. The separately expressed receptor-binding domain, comprising about 50% of preS as defined by mutational analysis, exhibits similar constants. The domain consists of an essential element, probably responsible for the initial receptor contact and a part that contributes to complex stabilization in a conformation sensitive manner. Together with previous results from cell biological studies these data provide new insights into the initial step of hepadnaviral infection.  (+info)

Localization of sympathetic, parasympathetic and sensory neurons innervating the heart of the Beijing duck by means of the retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase. (4/1326)

Sympathetic, parasympathetic and sensory neurons were labeled by injections of horseradish peroxidase into various regions of the heart in 33 Beijing ducks. Sympathetic postganglionic neurons innervating the heart were located in the paravertebral ganglia C15 (C16 is the last cervical segment in the duck) to T3, especially in the ganglion T1. The coronary sulcus and ventricle were more abundantly innervated by sympathetic neurons than the atrium. The left side of the heart was preferentially innervated by sympathetic postganglionic neurons in the left side of paravertebral ganglia but the right side of the heart were equally supplied from the right and left ganglia. Within the medulla oblongata, the number of labeled vagal preganglionic neurons in the nucleus ambiguus was much greater than that in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve. Labeled neurons of the nucleus ambiguus were found in many ducks injected into the coronary sulcus. Cardiac sensory neurons were observed in the dorsal root ganglia C15 to T2 (highest in the ganglion T1) and in the nodose and jugular ganglia of the vagus nerve. These labeled neurons probably form the afferent and efferent limbs of cardiac reflexes and control circulation in the Beijing duck.  (+info)

Estimating the effective number of breeders from heterozygote excess in progeny. (5/1326)

The heterozygote-excess method is a recently published method for estimating the effective population size (Ne). It is based on the following principle: When the effective number of breeders (Neb) in a population is small, the allele frequencies will (by chance) be different in males and females, which causes an excess of heterozygotes in the progeny with respect to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium expectations. We evaluate the accuracy and precision of the heterozygote-excess method using empirical and simulated data sets from polygamous, polygynous, and monogamous mating systems and by using realistic sample sizes of individuals (15-120) and loci (5-30) with varying levels of polymorphism. The method gave nearly unbiased estimates of Neb under all three mating systems. However, the confidence intervals on the point estimates of Neb were sufficiently small (and hence the heterozygote-excess method useful) only in polygamous and polygynous populations that were produced by <10 effective breeders, unless samples included > approximately 60 individuals and 20 multiallelic loci.  (+info)

The amino acid sequence of wood duck lysozyme. (6/1326)

The amino acid sequence of wood duck (Aix sponsa) lysozyme was analyzed. Carboxymethylated lysozyme was digested with trypsin and the resulting peptides were sequenced. The established amino acid sequence had the highest similarity to duck III lysozyme with four amino acid substitutions, and had eighteen amino acid substitutions from chicken lysozyme. The valine at position 75 was newly detected in chicken-type lysozymes. In the active site, Tyr34 and Glu57 were found at subsites F and D, respectively, when compared with chicken lysozyme.  (+info)

Residues critical for duck hepatitis B virus neutralization are involved in host cell interaction. (7/1326)

To date, no detailed analysis of the neutralization properties of duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) has been reported, and it is not clear whether any of the known neutralization epitopes correspond to the viral receptor binding site or to sequences involved in the cell entry pathway. We demonstrate here that antibodies directed against two overlapping peptides (amino acids 83 to 97 and 93 to 107), covering the sequences of most DHBV pre-S neutralizing epitopes, both inhibit virus binding to primary duck hepatocytes and neutralize virus infectivity. An extensive mutagenesis of the motif 88WTP90, which is the shortest sequence of the epitope recognized by the virus-neutralizing monoclonal antibody (MAb) 900 was performed in order to define the amino acids involved in these interactions. Single point mutations within this epitope affected neither virus replication nor infectivity but abolished virus neutralization by MAb 900 completely. Interestingly, mutants with two and three consecutive residue replacements (SIP and SIH) within this epitope retained replication competence but were no longer infectious. The loss of infectivity of SIH and SIP mutant particles was associated with significantly reduced binding to primary duck hepatocytes and could be rescued by trans complementation with wild-type pre-S protein. Taken together, these results indicate that each amino acid of the DHBV pre-S sequence 88WTP90 is critical for recognition by the neutralizing MAb 900 and that replacement of the first two or all three residues strongly reduces virus interaction with hepatocytes and abrogates infectivity. These data imply that the motif 88WTP90 contains key residues which are critical for interaction with both the neutralizing MAb and the host cell.  (+info)

Recombinant duck interferon gamma inhibits duck hepatitis B virus replication in primary hepatocytes. (8/1326)

Interferon gamma (IFN-gamma), which has been cloned in several mammalian species and recently in birds, plays a critical role in modulating immune system function. IFN-gamma and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) have been shown to be crucial in the pathogenesis of viral hepatitis and in the transient disappearance of hepatitis B virus (HBV) from the liver after adoptive transfer of HBV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes into HBV-transgenic mice. Similar studies in the natural animal hosts of related hepadnaviruses have been limited because the corresponding probes and recombinant cytokines were not available. For this reason, we initiated studies to clone and characterize cytokines from the duck, the natural host of the duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV). We describe here the cDNA cloning and initial characterization of the IFN-gamma homologue of ducks (DuIFN-gamma). The DuIFN-gamma cDNA codes for a predicted mature protein of 145 amino acids with a molecular mass of 16.6 kDa. The precursor protein has 67% identity with the previously cloned chicken IFN-gamma and 21 to 34% identity with mammalian IFN-gamma. Recombinant DuIFN-gamma induces the transcription of several IFN-inducible genes including IFN regulatory factor 1 and guanylate-binding protein, and it exhibits antiviral activity that protects duck cells from vesicular stomatitis virus-mediated lysis. Importantly, treatment of primary duck hepatocytes with recombinant DuIFN-gamma inhibits DHBV replication in a dose-dependent fashion. Time course analysis revealed that IFN-gamma treatment does not affect initial covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) conversion but inhibits the synthesis of progeny cccDNA by amplification.  (+info)

Wild duck populations were investigated over a 4 year period for duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) infection and liver disease. It appeared that DHBV is endemic in wild migratory mallards from France and the U.S.A., although neither hepatocellular carcinoma nor viral DNA integration could be detected in liver samples examined. The follow up of natural infection indicated that wild mallards developed significantly higher serum titres to DHBV DNA than Pekin ducks. The results of experimental transmission demonstrated that such differences in viraemia were not related to the breed of ducks but to the virus isolate, since the wild mallard-isolated DHBV (DHBVwm) induced significantly higher viraemia in both mallard and Pekin ducklings compared to the domestic Pekin DHBV (DHBVp) isolate. The naturally infected mallard and Pekin ducks had only minor histological lesions of the liver compared with experimentally infected birds. There was no correlation between the intensity of viraemia and the severity of liver
I have ducks, geese, hens and bantams. The best laying ducks for eggs are khaki campbells, first thing though, do you like duck eggs, not everyone does, lots of other breeds of ducks are available but maybe lay a little less reliably or some very seasonally. Ducks do need somewhere to bath, even runner ducks, they do make muddy places muddier, they push their bills into the ground and can make a mess, they also do far more poo than chickens, I also have call ducks which are miniature, they lay eggs more seasonally but are less messy, but quite noisy. Only female ducks quack and they can be quite noisy at times. If you have a brook, you may find your ducks will take off downstream and you might have to go looking for them at times. Chickens are more reliable layers, you would have more people willing to take gluts of hens eggs as opposed to duck, the best layers are the hybrid hens (ginger ones) but most hens do lay quite well, the younger the hens, the more they lay, as they get older they drop ...
The natural reservoir of influenza A virus is waterfowl, particularly dabbling ducks (genus Anas). Although it has long been assumed that waterfowl are asymptomatic carriers of the virus, a recent study found that low-pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) infection in Bewicks swans (Cygnus columbianus bewickii) negatively affected stopover time, body mass and feeding behaviour. In the present study, we investigated whether LPAI infection incurred ecological or physiological costs to migratory mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) in terms of body mass loss and staging time, and whether such costs could influence the likelihood for long-distance dispersal of the avian influenza virus by individual ducks. During the autumn migrations of 2002-2007, we collected faecal samples (n=10918) and biometric data from mallards captured and banded at Ottenby, a major staging site in a flyway connecting breeding and wintering areas of European waterfowl. Body mass was significantly lower in infected ducks than in ...
Birds, in particular poultry and ducks, are a source of many infectious diseases, such as those caused by influenza viruses. These viruses are a threat not only to the birds themselves but also to poultry farming and human health, as forms that can infect humans are known to have evolved. It is believed that migratory birds in general play an important role in the global spread of avian influenza (AI). However, it is still debated how large this role precisely is and whether other modes of spread may be more important. The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is the worlds most abundant and well-studied waterfowl species. Besides being an important game and agricultural species, it is also a flagship species in wetland conservation and restoration. Waterfowl (Anseriformes: Anatidae) and especially ducks currently are the focal bird group in long distance dispersal of Avian Influenza in the wild, and the mallard has been identified as the most likely species to transport this virus.. In my thesis I ...
The Ducks had an early lead, gave up two goals in the span of 27 seconds and lost.. Sound familiar? Sounds like the entire season for this team, basically.. San Jose defeated the Ducks, 3-1, Wednesday at Honda Center, the first time the Sharks have beaten the Ducks in four meetings this season.. After Corey Perry had given the home team a 1-0 lead after one period, former Duck Brad Winchester and Benn Ferriero scored at 16:23 and 16:50, respectively, of the second to put San Jose up for good.. The Sharks (21-11-4) added a third goal (Joe Pavelski) midway through the third period.. The Ducks (10-22-6) are back in action at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Honda Center against the New York Islanders.. Summary Twelve influenza A viruses, antigenically related to the H0, H1 and Hsw1 subtypes, were isolated from cloacal samples of feral ducks in Canada. Antigenic comparisons showed that these viruses were most closely related to the recent Hsw1N1 isolates from man and pigs, whereas in vivo pathogenicity tests revealed differences between the Hsw1N1 viruses from the ducks and those from humans and pigs. Antigenic characterization of 94 additional influenza A viruses from the ducks showed four haemagglutinin subtypes (Hav1, Hav4, Hav5 and Hav7), an unclassified haemagglutinin, and six neuraminidase subtypes (N1, N2, Neq2, Nav1, Nav2 and Nav5) in various combinations, some of which are novel and have not previously been reported. Three of these duck influenza viruses possessed a haemagglutinin antigenically related to that of classical fowl plague virus. A much higher percentage of virus isolations were from juvenile ducks (18.5%) than from adults (5%). All of the ducks, from which viruses were isolated,
To make the public more aware of the hard duck life, SA organisation POND (Protect Our Native Ducks) is running a poster competition. Theyre inviting students to create a poster that asks the public to take better care of Australias native ducks. There are different age categories and prizes in each one. Get the comp details by clicking on the image.. POND brings together a range of people who all have one thing in common - a love for animals (well, ducks if you want to be really specific!) I didnt realise this until the info was jammed right under my nose, but ducks really have a LOT to worry about! Take a look at this.... 1) Hunters. As someone once said, The perils of duck hunting are great - especially for the duck. Ducks can still be shot at for fun in SA and some other states (boooo!), but it is banned in WA, NSW and Qld (yaaaay!) Ducks may be killed outright, have their necks broken by hunters after being injured, or if they get away injured, they can suffer a slow and painful ...
Application of Semen Quality Detected by Flow Cytometry in Muscovy Ducks Liang-Yuan Wei, Hsiu-Chou Liu, and Jeng-Fang Huang. The objective of present study was to assess the feasibility of sperm quality evaluation by flow cytometry in Muscovy drake (Cairina moschata). Fresh semen of Muscovy drakes was mixed with the semen stored 1-day at room temperature by ratios: 100%, 75%, 50%, 25% and 0%. The sperm membrane integrity and mitochondria function of the pooled semen was detected by flow cytometry, and the sperm motility, viability and morphology were investigated by microscopy. Six drakes were selected randomly to collect their semen and evaluate sperm quality by flow cytometry and microscopy. These semen was also artificially inseminated (AI) to female Muscovy ducks and female Kaiya ducks (Anas platyrhynchos). The correlation between these parameters of sperm quality and AI result was analyzed. The result of present study showed, flow cytometry not only distinguished sperm membrane ...
For the journey home you can make your ducks comfortable by putting them in a spacious straw lined box. A copy of James and the Giant Peach is optional but will make the time pass quickly. It can still be a little disorientating for them to be lifted out of the box and find themselves in totally new surroundings so here a few things you can do to make your new arrivals feel at home in your garden straight away. 1: You can give their energy levels a real boost by feeding them marmite on toast (or bread). Marmite is packed full of B-Vitamins and is good for ducks and humans alike. A slice on the first day for your ducks will keep the vet away. You can keep feeding them this as a routine, about once a week.. 2: Introduce your other pets slowly. Ducks usually get on great with dogs and cats, but it is best to wait a day or so until they are settled, before introducing them to the ducks.. 3: Finally, try mixing some probiotic yoghurt in with their layers pellets (see the feeding section ) to create a ...

The mallard Anas platyrhynchos is a reservoir species for influenza A virus in the northern hemisphere, with particularly high prevalence rates prior to as well as during its prolonged autumn migration. It has been proposed that the virus is brought from the breeding grounds and transmitted to conspecifics during subsequent staging during migration, and so a better understanding of the natal origin of staging ducks is vital to deciphering the dynamics of viral movement pathways. Ottenby is an important stopover site in southeast Sweden almost halfway downstream in the major Northwest European flyway, and is used by millions of waterfowl each year. Here, mallards were captured and sampled for influenza A virus infection, and positive samples were subtyped in order to study possible links to the natal area, which were determined by a novel approach combining banding recovery data and isotopic measurements (delta H-2) of feathers grown on breeding grounds. Geographic assignments showed that the ...

Endothelin receptor B subtype 2 (EDNRB2) is a seven-transmembrane G-protein coupled receptor. In this study, we investigated EDNRB2 gene as a candidate gene for duck spot plumage pattern according to studies of chicken and Japanese quail. The entire coding region was cloned by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Sequence analysis showed that duck EDNRB2 cDNA contained a 1311bp open reading frame and encoded a putative protein of 436 amino acids residues. The transcript shared 89%-90% identity with the counterparts in other avian species. A phylogenetic tree based on amino acid sequences showed that duck EDNRB2 was evolutionary conserved in avian clade. The entire coding region of EDNRB2 were sequenced in 20 spot and 20 non-spot ducks, and 13 SNPs were identified. Two of them (c.940G|A and c.995G|A) were non-synonymous substitutions, and were genotyped in 647 ducks representing non-spot and spot phenotypes. The c.995G|A mutation, which results in the amino acid substitution of
Thirty six domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) were examined to observe the occurrence of ecto and endoparasites. Altogether seven species of ectoparasites namely Anaticola crassicornis, Lipeurus caponis, Goniocotes hologaster, Menopon gallinae, Menacanthus stramineus, Holomenopon leucpxanthum and Dermanyssus gallinae were observed and identified. L. caponis showed the highest prevalence both in male and female (100%). Mean intensity of A. crassicornis in female ducks was the highest (14.5 ± 2.36) followed by L. caponis (12.5 ± 3.21). The lowest mean intensity was of G. hologaster (2.5 ± 1.41) in male ducks. Prevalence of D. gallinae was higher in male (62.5%) than in female (40%). The maximum percentage of ectoparasites was recovered from wing feather (38.62) followed by trunk (23.85) and skin (23.44). Among the endoparasites, the occurrence of cestodes (77.78%) was the highest with the topmost intensity (51.43 ± 4.88). The highest prevalence was of Hymenolepis columbae and Hymenolepis ...

WASTE. Handicapped ducks cannot sit in their own waste. A handicapped duck needs to be able to move well-enough to get themselves out of their own waste. Alternatively, they need enough help from caregivers to prevent urine burns and loss of butt feathers from urine/feces burns. A duck that has missing feathers and raw, red skin from urine or feces burns that cannot be fixed within days needs to be euthanized.. ANKLE/FOOT HEALTH. Special-needs ducks that sit a lot may get ankle/leg/foot sores. This can happen, just like a sore keel. But it needs to be fixed and their environment changed to prevent it from happening again within days. PAIN. Pain is a tough one. A new rescue in pain should receive vet-prescribed metacam and/or pain medication until they are comfortable. Watch for fluffed feathers, sick-looking eyes and/or shaking. Those are all bad signs of pain. Chronic pain from arthritis is pretty common in older ducks. I have some gimpy rescued ducks with bad joints who limp. My advice is to ...
Back to our NSA we decided to keep ducks to help maintain our dedication to not using pesticides to control bugs like the harlequin beetle, stink bug, cucumber beetle and bean beetle. Ducks also produce wonderful manure that they automatically add back to the soil through walking and foraging deeply with their bills. The water they bath in can be directly applied to crops for an immediate fertilizer boost. Not only that but they lay delicious rich eggs, containing high levels of Omega 3s and vitamins foraged from the garden; not from medicated feed in cages. Ducks, unlike chickens, are easy to train and herd; show a duck once or twice and they will remember! One example is in southeast Asia; Indian Runner ducks in the thousands are herded from rice paddy to another by the community of farmers to eat bugs, lay manure and eggs. Then herded to the next paddy and finally to a large outdoor pen for the night. This has been done for centuries. At our garden not only will we be using them ...

The Ducks cant lose Wednesday. Not at home. Not against a Blues team going nowhere. Not when they need every point they can get.. Usually, were not big on calling out must-wins before a team is facing a game in which defeat would mark the end of its season.. But lets be honest. The Ducks cant lose Wednesday. Not after losing Sunday at home. Not with the Kings coming Saturday in L.A. Not while sitting 10th in a race where only the top eight matter.. Eggs have often been praised and villified as a food choice to be included in the average daily diet. The truth is that most healthy people can include eggs in their meals without experiencing any adverse effects. However, most people are unaware that eating duck eggs rather than chicken eggs is a much healthier choice for the following reasons:. 1) Duck eggs have the same taste as chicken eggs but have a much creamier, orange yolk consistency.. 2)Unlike chicken eggs, duck eggs have a high alkaline content and are noted as an anti-cancer food. This is a plus for cancer patients since cancer cells cannot multiply in an alkaline environment.. 3)Duck eggs stay fresher longer due to their thicker shell and have twice the nutritional value of a chicken egg. When refrigerated they can be kept a maximum of six weeks!. 4) Duck eggs contain more albumen that make pastries and cakes rise higher with a fluffier texture.. 5)Duck eggs have more Omega-3 fatty acids which is thought to promote healthy skin and ...
The current study was conducted to investigate the effect of zinc supplementation on the growth performance, intestinal morphology, and the transcription of the barrier function related genes in Pekin ducks. Seven-hundred and sixty-eight 1-day-old Pekin ducks were randomly assigned into six dietary treatments. Each treatment had eight replicates with 16 ducks per replicates. The ducks were fed either a corn-soybean meal basal diet or basal diets supplemented with 15, 30, 60, 120, and 240 mg zinc/kg from zinc sulfate. This experiment lasted for 5 weeks, and the jejunum sample were harvested at 14 and 35 days of age. Results have shown that diets supplemented with zinc significantly increased the duck body weight, average daily gain, and average daily feed intake in different period of experiment (P , 0.05); feed to gain ratio was decreased as the zinc level increased (P , 0.05). Zinc supplementation increased the villus height and decreased the crypt depth in jejunum of ducks (P , 0.05) at 14 and ...

Wild Ducks - The Chinese were the first to raise wild ducks domestically for food. Todays domestic wild ducks are descendants of either the Muscovy or Mallard species. Americas Long Island ducks are offspring of Peking ducks (a variety of Mallard) brought from China in the late 1800s. A young duck or duckling (usually under 8 weeks of age) has dark, tender meat and weighs about 3 1/2 to 5 pounds. A mature duck is usually over 6 months of age and has tougher meat.. Goose - Geese were farm-raised in ancient Egypt, China, and India. Todays goose weighs between 5 and 18 pounds. A young bird of either sex (goose is the female of the species; gander, the male) has tender meat, while a mature goose of either sex has tougher meat.. Guineafowl - This relative of the chicken and partridge, sometimes called a guinea hen or African pheasant, was thought to originate in Guinea, West Africa. A young guineafowl, about 11 weeks old, has tender meat, while a mature bird has tougher meat. Female guinea ...

Behaviour In central and north-west Europe this species is mainly sedentary (del Hoyo et al. 1992) although other populations are chiefly migratory (Madge and Burn 1988). Migratory populations arrive on their breeding grounds from late-April (Kear 2005a) where they breed in single pairs or loose groups (del Hoyo et al. 1992) with hundreds often nesting at the same site (although not colonially) (Kear 2005a). Once incubation has commenced (Madge and Burn 1988) the males gather in flocks (Madge and Burn 1988, Kear 2005a) to moult (moult migrations occurring in some areas) between late-June and early-September when they become flightless for 3-4 weeks (Scott and Rose 1996) (females moult their flight feather 1-2 months later) (Scott and Rose 1996). The autumn migration begins in September (Kear 2005a), with a segregation of the sexes occurring in autumn and winter due to the difference in the timing of the moult (Scott and Rose 1996). The return spring migration begins in late-February (Kear ...

The white-winged wood duck is mostly believed to be a close relative of the ubiquitous Muscovy duck (the only commonly domesticated duck species other than the mallard), hence the placement in the genus Cairina, but this may be wrong, as molecular evidence has suggested. It looks like a Muscovy duck, so Ill leave it where it is for the time being; I distrust DNA highly. Its an endangered species from south-east Asia, held in an enclosure known as Tropical Wetlands in the London Wetland Centre; the only thing that looks vaguely tropical about that part is a plastic Rafflesia that pigeons seem to like sitting (and crapping) on. There were white-winged wood ducks there when I first started visiting the Centre in 2005, then they vanished, being replaced by Comb ducks Sarkidiornis melanotos (indeed found in tropical Asia, but the Centre holds the South American subspecies, S. m. sylvicola). Last month I found the white-winged wood ducks back, and in greater numbers ...

Memphis - May 27, 2015 - Officials from Ducks Unlimited, the worlds largest nonprofit wetlands and waterfowl conservation organization, reacted to the final rule announced today clarifying which wetlands, rivers and streams in the United States will be protected by the Clean Water Act.. Because this new rule has broad implications for many bodies of water that are important to North Americas waterfowl, Ducks Unlimited will be reviewing how potential changes might affect our waterfowl, their habitats and our agricultural partners, said Ducks Unlimited CEO Dale Hall. We strongly supported using science as the foundation for the new rule, and we were encouraged to see that all of the longstanding exemptions for normal agricultural practices appear to remain in place.. Given the complexities of this rule, Ducks Unlimited will need time to review and analyze the complete rule and the accompanying information in order to fully understand the implications to waterfowl habitat and our conservation ...

Playing their second straight game without injured center Ryan Getzlaf, the Ducks offense didnt suffer nearly as much as their defense in Dallas.. Loui Erikssons hat trick, including a short-handed goal that opened the scoring, sent the Ducks to their third loss in their last four games. Erikssons second goal was the back-breaker - draped by Sheldon Brookbank, he flung a one-handed shot weakly between the legs of Jonas Hiller that somehow eldued the Ducks goalie at 6:19 of the second period.. Exactly 30 seconds after that goal tied it at 2, Stephane Robidas point shot angled in off the stick of Ducks defenseman Nick Boynton, and the Stars would not trail again.. Saku Koivu scored twice, and Dan Sexton added a pair of assists, in a losing effort for the Ducks. Mike Brown scored his career-high fifth goal for the Ducks, who got 37 saves from Hiller.. Forward Todd Marchant left the game midway through the second period and did not return.. ...

Isolations of genotype IX (gIX) Avian Paramyxovirus Type 1 (APMV-1) from various bird species have been more common recently, with isolates showing variable pathogenicity in different species of poultry. Here we sequenced the genome of a Muscovy duck origin gIX virus strain XBT14, and characterized the virulence and pathogenicity of this isolate in chickens and ducks. The genome sequence of strain XBT14 is 15192 nt in length, containing multiple basic amino acids at the cleavage site of fusion protein. The strain XBT14 shared 91.6% to 91.9% nucleotide identities with early-genotype viruses (such as genotype III and IV), while shared 85.3% to 85.9% nucleotide homologies to later genotype viruses (such as genotype VII). Pathogenicity tests showed that strain XBT14 could cause death in different duck breeds with mortality rate of 44.4% in Muscovy duck, of 25.9% in Sheldrake, and 11.1% in Cherry Valley duck, respectively. Similar mortality discrepancies were also observed in different ducks when ...

To develop a clinically applicable brachial plexus nerve block technique for perioperative analgesia in birds, 8 adult female mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) were anesthetized and used in several local anesthetic trials with bupivacaine (2 or 8 mg/kg) or a combination of lidocaine (15 mg/kg) and epinephrine (3.8 μg/kg) perineurally; equal volumes of saline were administered as control treatments. Both axillary and dorsal approaches to the brachial plexus were evaluated. With the axillary approach, radial and ulnar compound nerve action potentials (CNAP), sensory nerve ...
Improving the Quality of Minimal Disease Muscovy Duck Herd for Biomedical Purpose Liang-Yuan Wei, Hsiu-Chou Liu, and Jeng-Fang Huang. The objective of this study was to set up a minimal disease Muscovy duck herd and establish the embryonic eggs and duckling supply system for research, development and production of waterfowl vaccine. The minimal disease Muscovy duck herd (L305) has been selected from L302G13 (white Muscovy duck LRI 1) for 10 generations and were raised in a high bio-security duck house. The antibody of goose parvovirus (GPV), Muscovy parvovirus (MDPV) and duck hepatitis virus (DHV) was monitored when the ducks were 12, 24 and 40weeks by serum neutralization (SN) and virus neutralization (VN). After improving the bio-security measures and intensive disinfection, the antibody titer of monitored diseases had decreased. These embryonic eggs can produce over one million doses of live parvovirus vaccines ...
1. Fish and ducks often belong to the same local food web, and several studies indicate that there is a general negative effect of fish on breeding ducks. This pattern has so far been addressed mainly within the framework of competition for common invertebrate prey, while predation by large fish as a force behind settlement and abundance patterns in ducks remains largely unknown. This is the first study to address the effect of fish predation on breeding ducks, isolated from that of competition, and the first experiment to explore the ability of ducks to identify and avoid lakes with high risk of fish predation. 2. We used a before-after control-impact design and 11 naturally fishless lakes. Waterfowl on the lakes were surveyed during the breeding season of 2005. Large adult pike (Esox lucius) were added to two lakes in early spring 2008, and waterfowl surveys were repeated on all 11 lakes. 3. Pike introduction did not affect the number of pairs on lakes during the nesting season in any of three ...

One was a large-conductance (maxi) K+ channel which was activated by intracellular calcium and/or depolarizing membrane voltages, and the other was a smaller-conductance K+ channel which exhibited at least two conductance levels and displayed pronounced inward rectification. Barium blocked both channels, but tetraethylammonium chloride and quinidine selectively blocked the larger K+ channel. The large K+ channel did not appear to open under resting conditions but could be activated by application of the muscarinic agonist, carbachol. The smaller channels were open under resting conditions but the gating was not ...
A bacterial infection has killed more than 1,000 mallard ducks this December alone! The officials say that the cause of it might not be avian flu! The birds were found dead along a single creek in southern Idaho.. The ducks were found to have been killed by lesions in the lungs and hemorrhage in the heart wall, leading to the conclusion that they died of a bacterial infection, Dave Parrish, regional supervisor for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game informed.. But again, the state wildlife biologists and U.S. Department of Homeland Security investigators not ruling out any cause of the deaths is sure to raise a question on the infection, kicking up fear and panic in the region!. ...

A comprehensive study using virological and serological approaches was carried out to determine the occurrence of avian paramyxoviruses (APMVs) and avian influenza viruses (AIVs) in live healthy mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) in addition to caged birds, wild birds (other than waterfowl), and poultry. Thirty-three viruses were isolated from 321 tracheal and cloacal swabs from mallard ducks and were characterised as: 6 AIV (two H5N2 and four H4N6), 10 APMV-1, and 17 APMV-4. Of 335 serum samples tested for AIV antibodies, 109 (32.5%) sera were positive by nucleoprotein-blocking ELISA (NP-B-ELISA). Serum samples (315) were examined for antibody to APMV-1, -2, -3, -4, -6, -7, -8, and -9 by the haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. The largest number of reactions, with titres up to ≥1/64, was to APMV-1 (93.1%), followed by APMV-6 (85.1%), APMV-8 (56%), APMV-4 (51.7%), APMV-7 (47%), APMV-9 (15.9%), APMV-2 (13.3%), and APMV-3 (6.0%). Duck is susceptible to many pathogens, such as duck hepatitis virus, duck enteritis virus (DEV), duck tembusu virus, H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) in particular. With the significant role of duck in the evolution of H5N1 HPAIV, control and eradication of H5N1 HPAIV in duck through vaccine immunization is considered an effective method in minimizing the threat of a pandemic outbreak. Consequently, a practical strategy to construct a vaccine against these pathogens should be determined. In this study, the DEV was examined as a candidate vaccine vector to deliver the hemagglutinin (HA) gene of H5N1, and its potential as a polyvalent vaccine was evaluated. A modified mini-F vector was inserted into the gB and UL26 gene junction of the attenuated DEV vaccine strain C-KCE genome to generate an infectious bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) of C-KCE (vBAC-C-KCE). The HA gene of A/duck/Hubei/xn/2007 (H5N1) was inserted into the C-KCE genome via the mating-assisted genetically integrated

Boron (B) and selenium (Se) sometimes occur together in high concentrations in the environment and can accumulate in plants and invertebrates consumed by waterfowl. One hundred twenty-six pairs of breeding mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were fed diets supplemented with B (as boric acid) at 0, 450, or 900 ppm, in combination with Se (as seleno-DL-methionine) at 0, 3.5, or 7 ppm, in a replicated factorial experiment. Ducklings produced received the same treatment combination as their parents. Boron and Se accumulated in adult liver, egg, and duckling liver. In adults, B and Se caused weight loss, and B decreased hemoglobin concentration, egg weight, and egg fertility. Both B and Se reduced hatching success and duckling weight, and B reduced duckling growth and duckling production, and caused several alterations in duckling liver biochemistry. Duckling survival was not reduced by B or Se, and neither B nor Se had...
YAKIMA - State and federal wildlife-diagnostic centers have confirmed an outbreak of avian cholera near the Tri-Cities, where more than 1,200 dead ducks have been reported in the past week. The disease was confirmed in dead ducks found near Burbank, Wash., and tested by the USGS National Wildlife Health Center and the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab. The birds tested negative for avian influenza, a different disease fatal to waterfowl and other birds.. Avian cholera is caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida and is one of the most common diseases among ducks, geese and other wild North American waterfowl, said Katie Haman, a wildlife veterinarian at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Humans are not at a high risk for infection with the bacterial strain causing avian cholera, though infections in humans are possible, Haman said. We advise people to avoid handling sick or dead birds, and to report any they find.. Reports can be filed online ...

Summary This report outlines pathomorphological findings of a study involving commercial mule ducks with confirmed influenza A(H5N8) infections after a series of outbreaks in Bulgaria. Examinations were carried out after performing necropsy on dead birds from three different age groups (up to 15; 20 to 30; and 40+ days of age) fattened in different farms. Among birds of all ages, gross lesions were present in form of lesions affecting the heart. Histologically, the myocardium exhibited severe intermyofibrillar oedema, moderate to massive haemorrhages, and degenerative changes. All lesions resulted in single or multiple, small to massive, myocardial infarctions. Other affected organs included brain, lungs, liver, spleen and pancreas. Nonpurulent lymphocytic encephalitis was found post mortem in ducks that had priorly shown clinical nervous signs. Among ducks of all ages, a viral antigen in the cardiomyocytes and the epithelium of air capillaries was found through immunohistochemical detection ...
Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) can cause severe disease in ducks, characterized by perihepatitis, pericarditis and airsacculitis. Although the studies of bacteria isolation and methods of detection have been reported, host immune responses to APEC infection remain unclear. In response, we systemically examined the expression of immune-related genes and bacteria distribution in APEC-infected ducks. Results demonstrated that APEC can quickly replicate in the liver, spleen and brain, with the highest bacteria content at 2 day post infection. The expression of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), avian β-defensins (AvBDs) and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) were tested in the liver, spleen and brain of infected ducks. TLR2, TLR4, TLR5 and TLR15 showed different expression patterns, which indicated that they all responded to APEC infection. The expression of AvBD2 was upregulated in all tested tissues during the 3 days of testing, whereas the expression of AvBD4, AvBD5, AvBD7 and AvBD9 were
In the 2001 season, senior quarterback Joey Harrington, a Heisman Trophy finalist,[citation needed] led the Ducks to its first 11-win season in program history and an outright Pac-10 championship.[63][64] The season was riddled with close games, 6 of which ended with a spread of one score or less, coining the nickname Captain Comeback for Harrington.[65][66] The only loss of the season came at home to the Stanford Cardinal.[66] The Ducks ended the 2001 regular season ranked No. 2 in both the AP and Coaches polls, but the BCS computer formula ranked Oregon No. 4, behind No. 2 Nebraska - which had lost to Colorado in its final regular season game - and No. 3 Colorado; this kept Oregon out of the national championship game.[67] The discrepancy caused the BCS committee to alter the ranking system for subsequent years to a formula which, if applied in 2001, would have placed Oregon in the national championship game.[68] The 2001 Ducks instead played at the Fiesta Bowl against Colorado. CHICAGO - Order restored.. The Ducks channeled their anger over being unable to put away Chicago in Game 2 by getting a healthy combination of stout defense, timely goals and more quality goaltending Thursday night in a 2-1 Game 3 victory over the Blackhawks to regain the edge in the Western Conference finals.. Patrick Maroon and Simon Despres scored to back another razor-sharp effort by goalie Frederik Andersen, who made 28 saves as the Ducks will take a 2-1 series lead into Game 4 on Saturday.. The Ducks regained the advantage with a workmanlike effort that often quieted the 22,160 in attendance at United Center. It was quite the response to a Game 2 triple-overtime defeat where they put 62 shots on Chicago goalie Corey Crawford but couldnt beat him.. Despres scored his first postseason goal in the final minute of the second period to break a 1-1 tie. The defenseman ripped a one-time shot into an opening left by Crawford after Cam Fowler and Ryan Getzlaf worked the puck around the perimeter ...

A female duck may choose a mate, but his buddies wont care. In some duck species, 40 percent of all copulations are forced upon females. Yet fewer than 5 percent of these species offspring are sired by undesirables. It turns out the female has a few tricks up her, well, vagina.. Patricia Brennan, a research associate in ecology and evolutionary biology, was the first scientist to examine the labyrinthine reproductive anatomy of duck females. It looks like an obstacle course, she says. (For more on her studies, see Birth Control for Ducks.). In many duck species, reproductive tracts are long and corkscrew-shaped.. In most bird species, the female reproductive tract is a simple tube tucked inside the birds cloaca, its single opening for reproduction and excretion. One-step RT-PCR was performed on the total RNA extracted from the same samples as in virus isolation to detect the H5 AI virus gene (SuperScript One-Step RT-PCR System; Invitrogen, Carlsbad, CA, USA). The 1:10 dilution of RNA templates was used for feathers. The primers used were H5-248-270F and H5-671-647R; the expected product was 424 bp (7). The sensitivity of RT-PCR was slightly higher than that of virus isolation except for the results with cloacal swabs (Table).. Immunohistochemical testing was performed to detect influenza virus nucleoprotein in the feather tissue by using a rabbit polyclonal antibody (ab22285; Abcam Ltd., Cambridge, UK). Virus antigens were detected in feather epidermal cells from days 3 through 6 pi, and in a few stromal cells in the feather pulp on days 3 and 4 pi (Appendix Figure, panel C).. From IDFG press release:. Ducks Died of Fungal Infection. State and federal officials have confirmed that about 2,500 mallard ducks found dead southeast of Burley, died of an acute fungal infection.. The official cause of death is acute aspergillosis, a respiratory tract infection caused by a fungus commonly found in soil, dead leaves, moldy grain, compost piles, or in other decaying vegetation.. Test results from University of Idahos Caine Veterinary Teaching Center in Caldwell confirmed the presence of the fungus in tissue samples taken from the ducks this week. The results confirm preliminary diagnoses at two other wildlife health labs in Washington and Wisconsin.. The fungus can cause respiratory tract infections in birds that inhale the spores. The most likely source of the spores for these ducks is moldy grain, but no specific site has been found as the source.. Waterfowl die-offs are common and many happen in the United States every year. During the past six months, 16 events each ...
