Second-order belief attribution in Williams syndrome: intact or impaired? (1/247)

Second-order mental state attribution in a group of children with Williams syndrome was investigated. The children were compared to age, IQ, and language-matched groups of children with Prader-Willi syndrome or nonspecific mental retardation. Participants were given two trials of a second-order reasoning task. No significant differences between the Williams syndrome and Prader-Willi or mentally retarded groups on any of the test questions were found. Results contrast with the view that individuals with Williams syndrome have an intact theory of mind and suggest that in their attributions of second-order mental states, children with Williams syndrome perform no better than do other groups of children with mental retardation.  (+info)

Addiction: part II. Identification and management of the drug-seeking patient. (2/247)

The medications most often implicated in prescription drug abuse are opioid analgesics, sedative-hypnotics and stimulants. Patients with acute or chronic pain, anxiety disorders and attention-deficit disorder are at increased risk of addiction comorbidity. It is important to ask patients about their substance-use history, including alcohol, illicit drugs and prescription drugs. Patients who abuse prescription drugs may exhibit certain patterns, such as escalating use, drug-seeking behavior and doctor shopping. A basic clinical survival skill in situations in which patients exert pressure on the physician to obtain a prescription drug is to say "no" and stick with it. Physicians who overprescribe can be characterized by the four "Ds"-dated, duped, dishonest and disabled. Maintaining a current knowledge base, documenting the decisions that guide the treatment process and seeking consultation are important risk-management strategies that improve clinical care and outcomes.  (+info)

Justified deception? The single blind placebo in drug research. (3/247)

"Run-in" and "washout" periods involving the withholding of medication are widely used in drug research trials in pursuit of both patient safety and scientific reliability. Such no-medication periods can be justified ethically provided that they are apparent to patients, who can thereby properly consent to undergoing them. Less widespread, but still common, is the practice of "single blinding" no-medication periods, concealing them from patients by means of placebo. Whilst all placebos involve a measure of concealment, their use is typically justified in drug research trials (i) by their preserving the uncertainty generated by the random allocation of different treatments within a drug trial; and (ii) by the researchers openly declaring both the randomisation process and the chances of receiving placebo. In the single blind placebo "run-in" or "washout", neither of these conditions is met. This paper considers three possible defences of the practice of using single blind placebo "run-ins" or "washouts" and finds them all to fail; the practice appears ethically unjustified.  (+info)

A pill in the sandwich: covert medication in food and drink. (4/247)

The covert administration of medicines in food and drink has been condemned by some and condoned by others. We used questionnaires to ascertain the views of people caring for patients with dementia in institutions and in the community. In 24 (71%) of 34 residential, nursing and inpatient units in south-east England, the respondent said that medicines were sometimes given in this way. It was often done secretly and without discussion, probably for fear of professional retribution. Few institutions had a formal policy on the matter. Of 50 people caring for demented patients in the community, 48 (96%) thought the practice sometimes justifiable, but 47 believed that doctors should consult with carers before deciding. Even if, as most carers and some authorities believe, covert medication can be justified, the poor recording and secrecy surrounding the practice in institutions are cause for concern.  (+info)

Intuitions, principles and consequences. (5/247)

Some approaches to the assessment of moral intuitions are discussed. The controlled ethical trial isolates a moral issue from confounding factors and thereby clarifies what a person's intuition actually is. Casuistic reasoning from situations, where intuitions are clear, suggests or modifies principles, which can then help to make decisions in situations where intuitions are unclear. When intuitions are defended by a supporting principle, that principle can be tested by finding extreme cases, in which it is counterintuitive to follow the principle. An approach to the resolution of conflict between valid moral principles, specifically the utilitarian and justice principles, is considered. It is argued that even those who justify intuitions by a priori principles are often obliged to modify or support their principles by resort to the consideration of consequences.  (+info)

Medicine, lies and deceptions. (6/247)

This article offers a qualified defence of the view that there is a moral difference between telling lies to one's patients, and deceiving them without lying. However, I take issue with certain arguments offered by Jennifer Jackson in support of the same conclusion. In particular, I challenge her claim that to deny that there is such a moral difference makes sense only within a utilitarian framework, and I cast doubt on the aptness of some of her examples of non-lying deception. But I argue that lies have a greater tendency to damage trust than does non-lying deception, and suggest that since many doctors do believe there is a moral boundary between the two types of deception, encouraging them to violate that boundary may have adverse general effects on their moral sensibilities.  (+info)

Comments on an obstructed death -- a case conference revisited: commentary 1. (7/247)

The paper comments on Scott Dunbar's "An obstructed death and medical ethics," arguing contra Dunbar that we should not view truth-telling to the terminally ill as primarily governed by principles of veracity and respect for autonomy. All such rules are of limited value in medical ethics. We should instead turn to an ethics deriving from the centrality of moral relationships and virtues. A brief analysis of the connections between moral relationships and moral rules is offered. Such an ethics would lower the value that philosophical fashion places on truth-telling and autonomy and leave decisions about truth-telling and the terminally ill more dependent on the circumstances of particular cases.  (+info)

An obstructed death and medical ethics -- a case conference revisited: commentary 2. (8/247)

The dilemma of whether or not a doctor should tell a patient dying of cancer the truth remains a difficult one, as the disagreement between the two previous writers shows. One favours giving priority to patient autonomy, the other feels the doctor's duty of beneficence should be the overriding principle governing such decisions. To this contributor it seems both approaches have something to offer. By being sensitive to what and how much the patient wishes to know and by learning from the insights provided by the study of medical ethics, doctors can learn how to make better moral decisions in this and in other areas. Both lying and truth-telling carry risks of harm to the patient. Learning to work with and balance these risks is part of clinical practice. So is minimising risks by clear thinking.  (+info)

In this webcast, we will explore how to effectively use cyber deception to hunt advanced threat actors and other threats. We will discuss the use of incident response automation, and specifically how deception orchestration can be used to deploy successful deception campaigns.Starting from the initial reconnaissance phase, cyber deception technology takes advantage of the critical stages through which all attackers must pass (infiltration and lateral movement) and creates a controlled path for them to follow. The most effective cyber deception solutions allow the organization to create deception stories and realistic environments for hunting cyber attackers.Deception orchestration takes this to the next level by integrating incident response automation into the existing deception platform. We will also introduce Cymmetrias community edition of their deception solution, MazeRunner, freely available for download. Webcast attendees will come away with an understanding of what cyber deception is, how to

Deception is the act of propagating a belief that is not true, or is not the whole truth (as in half-truths or omission). Deception can involve dissimulation, propaganda, and sleight of hand, as well as distraction, camouflage, or concealment. There is also self-deception, as in bad faith. It can also be called, with varying subjective implications, beguilement, deceit, bluff, mystification, ruse, or subterfuge. Deception is a major relational transgression that often leads to feelings of betrayal and distrust between relational partners. Deception violates relational rules and is considered to be a negative violation of expectations. Most people expect friends, relational partners, and even strangers to be truthful most of the time. If people expected most conversations to be untruthful, talking and communicating with others would require distraction and misdirection to acquire reliable information. A significant amount of deception occurs between some romantic and relational partners. Deceit ...
Academic integrity is an interdisciplinary concept that provides the foundation for every aspect and all levels of education. The term evokes strong emotions in teachers, researchers, and students-not least because it is usually associated with negative behaviors. When considering academic integrity, the discussion tends to revolve around cheating, plagiarism, dishonesty, fraud, and other academic malpractice and how best to prevent these behaviors. A more productive approach entails a focus on promoting the positive values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage (International Center for Academic Integrity, 2013) as the intrinsically motivated drivers for ethical academic practice. Academic integrity is much more than
Corruption is a serious problem in Mexico and the available information regarding the levels of academic dishonesty in Mexico is not very encouraging. Academic integrity is essential in any teaching-learning process focussed on achieving the highest standards of excellence and learning. Promoting and experiencing academic integrity within the university context has a twofold purpose: to achieve the necessary learnings and skills to appropriately perform a specific profession and to develop an ethical perspective which leads to correct decision making. The objective of this study is to explore the relationship between academic integrity and ethical behaviour, particularly workplace behaviour. The study adopts a quantitative, hypothetical and deductive approach. A questionnaire was applied to 1203 college students to gather information regarding the frequency in which they undertake acts of dishonesty in different environments and in regards to the severity they assign to each type of infraction. The
The sweeping LCS charter, in part, authorised them to prepare cover and deception plans on a world-wide basis, co-ordinate deception plans prepared by Commands world-wide, and watch over the execution of deception plans. Additionally, and more sweeping, they were not limited to strategic deception, but had authority to include any matter for a military advantage.[10] Cover and deception are intended to either create or reinforce a belief in ones opponent which influences the opponents behavior along certain lines. Cover induces belief that something true is false. Deception induces belief that something false is true. Cover conceals truth; deception conveys falsehood. Cover induces nonaction; deception induces action.[11] Since behavior is that which is to be influenced, the enemy does not have to actually believe what is being projected. It is only necessary that the enemy is so concerned that he must provide for it.[12] To influence behavior, the target of deception is the enemy commander, ...
Impression management, as one of the most essential skills of social function, impacts ones survival and success in human societies. However, the neural architecture underpinning this social skill remains poorly understood. By employing a two-person bargaining game, we exposed three strategies involving distinct cognitive processes for social impression management with different levels of strategic deception. We utilized a novel adaptation of Granger causality accounting for signal-dependent noise (SDN), which captured the directional connectivity underlying the impression management during the bargaining game. We found that the sophisticated strategists engaged stronger directional connectivity from both dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and retrosplenial cortex to rostral prefrontal cortex, and the strengths of these directional influences were associated with higher level of deception during the game. Using the directional connectivity as a neural signature, we identified the strategic deception with

In general, most, but not necessarily all, patients want truthfulness about their health. Available evidence indicates that truth-telling practices and preferences are, to an extent, a cultural artefact. It is the case that practices among nurses and doctors have moved towards more honest and truthful disclosure to their patients. It is interesting that arguments both for and against truth-telling are established in terms of autonomy and physical and psychological harm. In the literature reviewed here, there is also the view that truth-telling is essential because it is an intrinsic good, while it is argued against on the grounds of the uncertainty principle. Based on this review, it is recommended that practitioners ought to ask patients and patients families what informational requirements are preferred, and research should continue into truth-telling in clinical practice, particularly to discover its very nature as a cultural artefact, and the other conditions and contexts in which truth-telling may

Over the past three years, President Obama has demonstrated his willingness to lie about anything and everything if it leads to the acquisition and retention of maximum power for himself and his cohorts. Obama follows a pattern of overloading the system with deception, making responses to every individual distortion impractical or outright impossible. While Obamas opponents spend their precious time addressing each new lie, Obama keeps the focus off the end-zone, and seizures of power previously unthinkable are accomplished. At some point, citizens grow weary of hearing that their leaders are out for their ill, that political policies are nothing more than grand deceptions. Who wants to believe that his president is a serial liar that seeks to impose full Socialism on the land of the free? A University of Toronto report based on two neural imaging studies that monitored brain activity has found individuals are more satisfied to get a reward from telling the truth rather than getting the same reward through deceit.. Our findings together show that people typically find truth-telling to be more rewarding than lying in different types of deceptive situations, says Prof. Kang Lee from the University of Toronto, whose research is partially funded Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).. The findings are based on two studies of Chinese participants using a new neuroimaging method called near-infrared spectroscopy. The studies are among the first to address the question of whether lying makes people feel better or worse than truth-telling.. The studies explored two different types of deception. In first order deception, the recipient does not know the deceiver is lying. In second order deception, the deceivers are fully aware that the recipient knows their intention, ...
Written By Matt.S February 10th 2016. We all know what deception is, dont we? Yep! Its telling lies to cover our backsides, or make us look impressive, or to gain something we are not entitled to. It is part of and number 9 on the list of the 10 Commandments God gave the Israelites (Exodus 20:16) (and still applies). So why is it so important to know about deception? There are numerous bible references to deception and there could be numerous studies done to cover just a few of these references. It is not my intention to look at all these references, but to focus on a specific area of deception mentioned in Matthew Chapter 24. Continue reading →. ...
While there is high value placed on honesty, a realistic look at human behavior reveals that deception is normal and story telling always involves dishonesty.
Wang, Cynthia, and A-k Leung. 2010. The cultural dynamics of rewarding honesty and punishing deception.. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. 36: 1529-1542.
Category 1: Biological and evolutionary basis of dishonesty. From a quick-and-dirty comparison of the evolutionary basis for symbiotic altruism and the cognitive neuroscience of dishonesty, one might conclude that altruism is to be found almost nowhere in the animal kingdom, whereas dishonesty exists almost everywhere in the human brain. The cases of altruism among that Trivers (1971) describes are few and far between, ranging from symbiotic cleaning between wrasse and grouper to warning calls in birds. In humans, altruism is elicited by rather extreme circumstances such as helping in times of danger and helping the sick, the wounded, or the very young and old (in addition to more commonplace but less costly exchanges of food, tools, and information). By contrast, Abe (2011) reports a widespread array of brain structures important for supporting deception, including the prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, amygdala, and basal ganglia. Intriguingly, Trivers posits that deception has ...
The language of deception is used against us every day and most of us dont even realize it has been done to us or realize the devastating effect it has on us. My task here is to expose some of the subtle deceptions hidden within the terminology we in the 9/11 truth movement use every day. My goal is to shine a light on the subtle deceptions that pass under our radar every day and to counter those deceptions with the language of truth.. First we have to consider how we in the 9/11 truth movement describe what happened to the World Trade Center (WTC)? The question is, should we say that WTC 1, 2, and 7 collapsed or should we say they were demolished and does it really matter all that much? At first glance it may not seem to be a particularly important question as to which word we use. I will expose however that it is, in fact, very important which word we use. Furthermore I want to reveal how and why the debate has been framed from the beginning by our opponents with the endlessly repeated ...

While many major chicken companies, restaurant chains and food service providers are switching to chickens raised without antibiotics important for human medicine, Sanderson Farms seems to be moving in the opposite direction. Last summer, Sanderson Farms launched an outrageous advertising campaign claiming that raising chickens without using these drugs is only a marketing gimmick-a blatant and unacceptable deception. Leading health and medical organizations, and a vast scientific literature, have warned that livestock antibiotic use is indeed contributing to the problem of antibiotic resistance. In recent years, there has been growing evidence that antidepressants are only marginally effective compared to placebo for mild to moderate depression. In other words, although many people improve when they take antidepressant medications, almost as many get better with placebo pills. One possible solution to this problem would be to give patients a trail of a placebo prior to giving them an antidepressant, however there are ethical issues with doing this deceptively. New evidence from other placebo-responsive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome shows that people may benefit from placebos even if they know they are taking them. This study aims to determine whether giving placebos without deception to people with major depressive disorder followed by the option to switch to an antidepressant is an effective strategy. There will be 3 groups of subjects. The first group is a standard treatment arm and will receive duloxetine, an antidepressant. The second will be given a placebo with the ...
BOOK REVIEW (NEW AFRICAN) AIDS - THE DEATHLY DECEPTION EXPOSED! Excerpt: It is good to know that this epidemic which was going to wipe out Africa is just a big bubble of soap... It is time to come back to science and abandon magic thinking, Philippe said. AIDS is bringing to American researchers alone a whopping $1.3 billion a year. The money flows in because the world believes that HIV alone causes AIDS. lf the hypothesis is thrown out the window tomorrow, the money will dry up and the AIDS Establishment will become an emperor without clothes. Hundreds of thousands of highly-paid jobs linked directly or indirectly to the AIDS industry will go. And the Establishment knows it! So they will keep both the hypothesis and the illusion going for as long as they can. The so-called millions of AIDS cases in Africa forecast by the WHO, as Hodgkinson points out in his book, have more to do with the WHOs unworkable definition of African AIDS: Weight loss of more than 10%, chronic diarrhoea ...
Audio Under the Stars presents: Deception People will pay to be deceived; professional magic, politics, and the male enhancement industry are all based, to varying degrees, on that principle. This month, the Center for Documentary Studies summertime lawn series for listening to audio documentaries focuses on a dozen lies, including chat line fabrications and crimes gone wrong. In their midst: the classic Native American autobiography that was exposed as a Klansmans fiction and an account of how two Southerners escaped slavery by hiding in plain sight. You dont have to pay for these lies; admission is free. Dont forget the lawn chairs, blankets, and picnic basket.—Byron Woods

The explosion of the Internet and social media has literally put the world at our fingertips, revolutionizing the way people connect and share information. However, for all the positives social media provides, it can also open the door to deception, potentially wreaking havoc on peoples lives both personally and professionally.
In this riveting, action-packed adventure, Michael Jason Shaw poses as an SS major and infiltrates the German military in order to stop the development of the V-5 rocket, the most dangerous weapon ever built. Its all part of a top-secret Nazi scheme called the Omega Deception, a devious plot to cripple the U.S. This suspense-filled story takes readers on a journey into the heart of evil as Shaw courageously confronts the SS and comes to peace with Gods plan for his life.
Another reason for rejecting God (choosing atheism), is a willing acceptance of satanic deception. The angel Lucifer (luminous one) fell and became Satan (adversary) due to his desire to supplant God. This was Lucifers single-minded obsession. He not only rejected God by attempting to supplant Him, but he urged humans to do likewise. Satan urged Eve to choose against God for her own self-fulfilment: He said to the woman, Did God actually say, You shall not eat of any tree in the garden? And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. But the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. (Genesis 3:1-5 ESV). The tactic is clear: firstly, question Gods statements, then, contradict Gods ...

Background Placebo treatment can significantly influence subjective symptoms. However, it is widely believed that response to placebo requires concealment or deception. We tested whether open-label placebo (non-deceptive and non-concealed administration) is superior to a no-treatment control with matched patient-provider interactions in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Methods Two-group, randomized, controlled three week trial (August 2009-April 2010) conducted at a single academic center, involving 80 primarily female (70%) patients, mean age 47±18 with IBS diagnosed by Rome III criteria and with a score ≥150 on the IBS Symptom Severity Scale (IBS-SSS). Patients were randomized to either open-label placebo pills presented as
The camp was carefully excavated, and the documentary shows how technology and conventional field archaeology can uncover this part of the Holocaust.. The archaeology is combined with the testimonies of the survivors to create a complete history of the Holocaust at Sobibor that was nearly hidden. The film includes interviews with some of the survivors, some of the bystanders, and some of the scholars working to document the history of this extermination camp located on the eastern border of Poland with the Ukraine.. Out of the almost 500 who got away on that day, 50 survived the war. This documentary features the stories of some of the rebels who escaped and the researchers who are still searching to reclaim an almost lost history of rebellion, deception, and triumph during the Holocaust.. ...

Legally relevant lying is an intentional attempt to convince another of the truth of a proposition the liar believes to be false. Delusion is an unintentional product of impaired reality testing that occurs in a range of psychiatric conditions and psychological states, some of which could be clinically subtle, since deception, truth and delusion differ in the intent rather than reality testing criterion. Deception and delusion are influenced by the degree of congruence between subjective and objective reality and are probably mutually exclusive. Thus, a delusion could lead to an objectively false statement, that could nevertheless be subjectively true and indistinguishable from truth by its psychophysiological (i.e., the polygraph) signature. This article presents a relevant case as a starting point of an examination of the current and future role of neurophysiological (i.e., functional brain imaging) measurements in the detection of deception. The authors incorporate the recent data on functional brain
On Truth, Justice, and the (Modern) American Way. No man can serve two masters. Many physicians have tried to do just that in the form of serving their patients interests, as well as the interests of insurors. More evidence of the vanity of this practice was published recently (Archive of Internal Medicine, October 25, 1999, pp. 2263-2270). Many physicians sanction the use of deception to secure third-party payers approval of medically indicated care (p. 2263).. In some cases, more than half of the physicians would indicate that they would deceive the third party. Physicians whose practices were predominantly in managed care markets were more likely to practice deception. A minority of physicians would not practice deception in any circumstances.. Though it is much disputed among Christians, I take the position that not all untruth constitutes the sin of lying, just as not all killing is murder, not all sexual intercourse is incest, and not all taking is stealing. Just a question, isnt most warfare is based on deceptions?. In a naive way, yes. Then again isnt most human activity based on deception in this sense? Did you tell the interviewee on your last job interview all your faults? Isnt that a lie of omission?. So, whta makes it different from Islam?. The motives and reasons for the lies. We didnt lie to Hitler about our troop locations because we had decided to invade Germany to convert, tax, or kill non-Americans. We werent plotting against their very existence. Nor did we believe we had an infallible deity telling us to either exterminate or control them. We were simply defending ourselves against Hitlers aggression against us, our friends, and other innocents.. Because it was stated in the Quran?. Yes, in part that is also why. When you think you are lying for God you are already on poor ethical footing. Very poor footing. What if my infallible God tells me to lie to you and kill you if you dont knuckle under to the beliefs of one of my ...

The very existence of self-deception remains subject to debate, despite its apparently normative nature, & the effort devoted towards its explication.
Abstract: Background: Infection-associated encephalopathies such as Reyes syndrome have been one of the major public health problems in many countries. The not dissimilar neuropsychiatric adverse reactions, including deaths, observed with Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate: OP) have been another current problem especially in Japan. Methods: Among the cases with neuropsychiatric adverse reactions to Tamiflu on which I was consulted, those cases in which medical charts, autopsy records and/or prescription certificates were available were analyzed and described. In order to obtain a complete view of the spectrum of neuropsychiatric adverse reactions attributed to Tamiflu and of existing knowledge of the causal relationship, adverse reaction case reports and accounts of personal experiences were collected using PubMed, Japonica Centra Revuo Medicina, the websites of MHLW, PMDA and FDA and other Internet sources. Information on animal toxicity and clinical trial findings was derived from the texts of ...

Self over truth, man over God-can a Christian be so deceived? Evidently- Paul referred to the Galatian church as having been bewitched (Gal 3:1), and Jesus warned that a prominent sign of the days before His coming would be an increase in deception (Mt 24:14). To confront the pro-gay theology, then, is to confront a deceptive element of our time- the tendency to subjugate objective truth to subjective experience.. That is one reason confrontation is not enough to change a heart. Being knowledgeable enough to dismantle all the gay Christian movements claims will not be enough to persuade a homosexual to repent. The heart, having been hardened through deception or rebellion or both, has to be softened. And that is the work of God alone. Ours is to simply speak the truth, trusting Him to quicken it to our hearers.. To that end, this three-part series will address the pro-gay theology by dividing its arguments-or tenants-into three categories: social justice arguments, general religious ...

In the course of their investigation, the authors learned that SIL had a big debt to institutions and individuals associated with the Rockefeller family.... Colby and Dennett found the Rockefeller connection particularly intriguing, and went on to investigate the Rockefeller familys financial interests in the commercial and industrial development of the Brazilian Amazon. In 1941, Nelson Rockefeller was named by president Roosevelt to the post of coordinator of the Office of Interamerican Affairs (CIAA), which ran intelligence and propaganda operations against the Nazis in Latin America. In one of its many flagrant violations of the separation between church and state, SIL assisted the CIAA in its Intensive Language Program for American and Latin American military officers and gathered intelligence on native peoples. As coordinator of the CIAA, Nelson acquired invaluable information about Latin Americas untapped natural resources, especially mineral reserves, information that ended up in his ...
If there was a Nobel prize for nonsense, and honest judges, this would win hands down. The truth is that in cancer we have a perfect example, before our very eyes and affecting our loved ones and at least 1 in 3 of us, of the ONLY creative process available to Darwinian evolution, random mutation. And it is a process involving loss of information, loss of control and, untreated, leads to death. If Darwinian evolution were true, random mutations would have to produce new things that worked better. Intelligent design theory states that random mutations in previously healthy cells will mess them up. And this is what we find. Nothing in biology makes sense without intelligent design. ...

Demeanor. Throughout my career as a trial consultant, Ive written and presented seminars on Demeanor, Deception and Credibility. This months column is adapted from an earlier paper in conjunction with an ABA Section of Litigation Annual Meeting presentation. Im sharing this knowledge with WLALA over several months.. Jurors use intuition in judging demeanor, deception, and credibility in their daily lives. Since jurors bring life experiences with them to court, understanding perceptions of truthfulness and lying behavior is critical. Whole books are written on the topic of lying [i],[ii] and a television series, Lie to Me, spawned from the work of Dr. Paul Ekman, the renown psychologist in the area of human emotion and lying. Social scientists study lying behavior, but knowing the myths that jurors believe is crucial. This column focuses on perceptions of behavior and suggests ways to enhance witness credibility.. The first being the one I understand the most, the ones who leave the religion, because of what it preaches about homosexuality, and also often for other reasons, like the misogyny you mentioned, or the fact that the whole thing seems a bit far fetched. This is the group that I believe the Atheist Camel originally thought all openly gay people who were born into a Christian home belonged to. This would be great if it were true, but heres the thing: I whole-heartedly believe that there are certain people who, at least in certain points in their lives, need a religion to cling to. I dont understand these people completely, since I am not one of them, and it seems that you dont either. If you are one of these people who feel like they do still need to stay a Christian, you do it in one of two ways: you keep the religion and faith and find a gay friendly church, or you try to get red of the gay. Those people are the ones who go to those pray the gay away camps. I think that when the ...
Governments, individuals, and industry all bear some responsibility for global warming. But fossil fuel companies are substantial contributors to the problem, and therefore must take responsibility for their actions.. There are several steps fossil fuel companies should take. An essential first action is for fossil fuel companies to stop disseminating climate disinformation, either directly or through trade associations and other industry groups. This should include severing ties with organizations like the American Legislative Exchange Council.. Fossil fuels companies should also fully disclose the financial and physical risks of climate change, invest in low-carbon and renewable energy resources, support policies to shift away from fossil fuels, publicly disclose their direct and indirect political spending, and pay for their share of the costs of climate-related damages and climate preparedness.. ...
The saturation of access to celebrities has made it possible to separate the puppets from their handlers, to tangle their strings and see their blank-eyed duplicity fall limply to the ground, allowing us to howl with laughter as the puppeteers scramble to regain control over the marred image that results. Whether through Twitter overshares or viral videos of our once-revered puppets drunkenly singing into a cheeseburger, the awkwardness and pain of those exposed nerves of truth have become the soul of new media. They are the life force of that lumbering circus giant, reality TV. To see this high-wire moment of scrambling to maintain the puppet, literally borne out in an improv puppeteer performance last night on The Celebrity Apprentice was mind-blowing. And meta: Trump is nothing more than an aggrandized puppet master to this sad and downtrodden cavalcade of B-list celebrities. The Celebrity Apprentice is his chance to snatch these puppets from the hands of their puppeteers/handlers/managers ...
It has happened again! In the wake of the latest rounds of ISIS terror attacks in Bangladesh, authorities in the country have again started denying the existence of any ISIS terror network there. Rejecting any ISIS involvement in terror attacks in Bangladesh as propaganda, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal poses the question: Why will the ISIS come here? One wonders if leaders in any terror-infested country would ever ask a similar question! We know ISIS is a global terrorist outfit waging a total war against everyone, Muslim or non-Muslim.. Its noteworthy, politicians and law-enforcers in Bangladesh either cry wolf about impending terror attacks in the country; or they cry hoarse denying the existence of any international terrorist group in the country. One recalls as to how the Governments alarmist statements about the existence of al Qaeda operatives in Bangladesh led to the cancellation of a scheduled road-trip from Dhaka to its outskirts by the visiting US President Bill Clinton, in ...

Using Survey Monkey (Palo Alto, CA), an online survey consisting of 13 questions was conducted in April 2012. Information about this on-going survey and the opportunity to participate was made available to all 27,000 students of the University of Innsbruck in Austria. A total of 2,013 students with a mean age of 24.5 years participated, with 66% of the respondents being female and 34% male. The students were from a wide variety of academic disciplines, and participation was anonymous and voluntary. The survey used parts of the original IARC [2011] press release as stimulus material. Participants were instructed to read the text from the original IARC press release: The WHO/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer associated with wireless phone use. The IARC [2011] did not quantitate the risk; however, one study of ...
Besides the immorality of Urban Renewal, it is also a monumental flop from the standpoint of the humanitarian purposes that were ascribed to it by the Thirteen-Thirteen lobbyists. During the nineteen-year period from its inception to the end of January 1968, Urban Renewal has depleted the nations housing supply by 315,451 units. Only 124,175 replacement dwellings were built, but 439,626 were demolished under Urban Renewal programming. During this period, $7.1 billion was spent on these projects. Over a million people and an uncounted number of small neighborhood businesses have been the victims of the federal bulldozer. Who weeps for them? Private land which Urban Renewal confiscates from hapless owners is divided by the bureaucrats between public and private interests. About 16 percent has remained tax exempt in public ownership (raising local taxes), while valuable acreage is sold at cut-rate prices to privileged interests which build high-rise office complexes and shopping centers rather ...
We have heard a lot about the possible health threats of e-cigarette use, particularly among teenagers. E-Cigarettes are also called vaporizers, due to their appearance plus some of the components they use to produce their nicotine liquid. They appear to be real cigarettes, however the ingredients and internal design will vary. Also, there is absolutely no smoke produced with one Electric Tobacconist of these devices. However, what folks do not realize is that the vapor from e-cigarette uses lots of the same harmful chemicals found in cigarette smoking. If you smoke, you know these harmful chemicals as long-term irritants. Actually, these chemicals have been linked to various cancers along with other illnesses. The same goes for vapors via e-cigs: long-term exposure can also cause cancer. The vapor from these devices also contains nicotine and other chemicals. Long-term smoking of any product containing nicotine can cause the lungs to become overworked and damaged. This is just what happens when ...
About 10 minutes into the Southampton versus Manchester semi final, the well known Dawkinist Jeremy Paxman introduced a round on Science, philosophy and religion. The three questions related to 3 of the Four horsemen of the New Atheists, Daniel Dennett, Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins. Shame there arent 4 questions in a round as Sam Harris, the fourth member of this group of aggressive anti-theist philosophers had to be left out. The questions were easy, I got them all and so did the team. The last one about Dawkins was gratuitously offensive, asking who had identified himself as a tooth fairy agnostic thus comparing the historically well attested Christian faith which provided the intellectual and moral base for western civilisation with a story told to small children. ...

I ran into a physician at the Arkansas Department of Health back in 2000, the then-head of the TB program, who also had problems wrapping his head around this. Physicians think of a case as a diagnosed individual, public health folks think of it as someone with the infection/disease, diagnosed or not (our patient is the population, not individuals, which is why veterinarians, trained with a herd focus, are often better epidemiologists than MDs/DOs). We had a TB case diagnosed in a junior high student in Forrest City, and the news led to people flocking for TB testing - we ended up doing population screening instead of only testing symptomatic cases. Because a lot of TB infections are asymptomatic, the number of DIAGNOSED cases rose dramatically. The doctor thought this meant we had a large increase in incidence and prevalence rates, and it took a lot to convince him that was wrong - the infections were ALREADY there, and the older estimates were too low because of the ascertainment bias ...

Moving back out and beyond the Great Arena, I just want to remind you once again not to be overwhelmed with fear at the extent and scale of manipulation and deception. Knowledge is power, and the initial reaction some may experience upon realising what is happening to our Humanity, can be a feeling of disempowerment. This is a natural reaction but please know that it is only the programed ego reacting and is temporary. I went through it myself. Everybody who is awakening and experiencing astonishment at the scale and genius of this deception and manipulation goes through this process to varying degrees. Then, if you once again rise above the drama and shift your perspective back up into the Higher Self and beyond into the Soul Essence, we can easily see that this has been the most amazing of challenges to test us using the best this Universe has to offer. Rise above the drama of the Great Arena and move beyond victimhood and into empowerment. Remember: we wanted this and we agreed to this! We ...

Hello. Well, in the spirit of anti-superstition, Ill forego any beliefs in a past life until I have more data. I doubt that is how itd work anyway. If a raindrop falls into the ocean, evaporates into the sky and is formed again, is it really the same water that made up the first one? Maybe we are all Hypatia, at least in part. I knew surprisingly little about Diderot for being a dabbler in philosophy. Just from what I read so far, I like him. His role in the French revolution and work to replicate the powers of production into a state of common abundance is certainly inspiring, although would probably cause deflation on a massive level.
