A developmental malformation of the heart characterized by a twisted but not defective atrioventicular connection. The abnormal rotation of the ventricular mass around its long axis results in the crossing of the inflow streams of the two ventricles. Other features include hypoplasia of the TRICUSPID VALVE and RIGHT VENTRICLE.
Lists of words, usually in alphabetical order, giving information about form, pronunciation, etymology, grammar, and meaning.
The pathologic narrowing of the orifice of the PULMONARY VALVE. This lesion restricts blood outflow from the RIGHT VENTRICLE to the PULMONARY ARTERY. When the trileaflet valve is fused into an imperforate membrane, the blockage is complete.
Backflow of blood from the RIGHT VENTRICLE into the RIGHT ATRIUM due to imperfect closure of the TRICUSPID VALVE.
The valve consisting of three cusps situated between the right atrium and right ventricle of the heart.
Procedures in which placement of CARDIAC CATHETERS is performed for therapeutic or diagnostic procedures.
A type of heart valve surgery that involves the repair, replacement, or reconstruction of the annulus of the MITRAL VALVE. It includes shortening the circumference of the annulus to improve valve closing capacity and reinforcing the annulus as a step in more complex valve repairs.
Impaired venous blood flow or venous return (venous stasis), usually caused by inadequate venous valves. Venous insufficiency often occurs in the legs, and is associated with EDEMA and sometimes with VENOUS STASIS ULCERS at the ankle.
A type of heart valve surgery that involves the repair, replacement, or reconstruction of the annuli of HEART VALVES. It includes shortening the circumference of the annulus to improve valve closing capacity and reinforcing the annulus as a step in more complex valve repairs.
Surgery performed on the thoracic organs, most commonly the lungs and the heart.
Developmental abnormalities in any portion of the VENTRICULAR SEPTUM resulting in abnormal communications between the two lower chambers of the heart. Classification of ventricular septal defects is based on location of the communication, such as perimembranous, inlet, outlet (infundibular), central muscular, marginal muscular, or apical muscular defect.
Small pumps, often implantable, designed for temporarily assisting the heart, usually the LEFT VENTRICLE, to pump blood. They consist of a pumping chamber and a power source, which may be partially or totally external to the body and activated by electromagnetic motors.
Developmental abnormalities in any portion of the ATRIAL SEPTUM resulting in abnormal communications between the two upper chambers of the heart. Classification of atrial septal defects is based on location of the communication and types of incomplete fusion of atrial septa with the ENDOCARDIAL CUSHIONS in the fetal heart. They include ostium primum, ostium secundum, sinus venosus, and coronary sinus defects.
Abnormalities in any part of the HEART SEPTUM resulting in abnormal communication between the left and the right chambers of the heart. The abnormal blood flow inside the heart may be caused by defects in the ATRIAL SEPTUM, the VENTRICULAR SEPTUM, or both.
Surgery performed on the heart.

A congenital abnormality in which organs in the THORAX and the ABDOMEN are opposite to their normal positions (situs solitus) due to lateral transposition. Normally the STOMACH and SPLEEN are on the left, LIVER on the right, the three-lobed right lung is on the right, and the two-lobed left lung on the left. Situs inversus has a familial pattern and has been associated with a number of genes related to microtubule-associated proteins.
A congenital defect in which the heart is located on the right side of the THORAX instead of on the left side (levocardia, the normal position). When dextrocardia is accompanied with inverted HEART ATRIA, a right-sided STOMACH, and a left-sided LIVER, the combination is called dextrocardia with SITUS INVERSUS. Dextrocardia may adversely affect other thoracic organs.
A congenital cardiovascular malformation in which the AORTA arises entirely from the RIGHT VENTRICLE, and the PULMONARY ARTERY arises from the LEFT VENTRICLE. Consequently, the pulmonary and the systemic circulations are parallel and not sequential, so that the venous return from the peripheral circulation is re-circulated by the right ventricle via aorta to the systemic circulation without being oxygenated in the lungs. This is a potentially lethal form of heart disease in newborns and infants.
Four CSF-filled (see CEREBROSPINAL FLUID) cavities within the cerebral hemispheres (LATERAL VENTRICLES), in the midline (THIRD VENTRICLE) and within the PONS and MEDULLA OBLONGATA (FOURTH VENTRICLE).

Coronary arteries in crisscross heart. (1/5)

Crisscross heart, or superoinferior ventricles, is a complex and often confusing congenital anomaly. We report a heretofore unreported presentation of "isolated" crisscross heart in situs inversus levocardia, which allows us to more clearly define the typical features of crisscross ventricles. The case of this 41-year-old woman, who had a peculiar coronary anatomy, underscores the concept that coronary artery anatomy is strictly related to the myocardial mass served. In complex congenital heart defects, development of an anterior descending artery is possible (as a primary artery, along with the circumflex and right coronary arteries) only if the ventricular septum develops properly and is aligned with the semilunar valves. We use the present case of crisscross heart to illustrate the spectrum of anomalies that can occur during formation of the cardiac apex; this spectrum ranges from a normal apex, to a diverted apex (as in dextroversion in situs solitus), to a crisscross anomaly.  (+info)

Echocardiographic segmental analysis in patients with an atrioventricular criss-cross. (3/5)

The aim of this study was to describe the echocardiographic characteristics of patients with an atrioventricular criss-cross who underwent segmental cardiac morphological analysis. The study involved five patients with a criss-cross heart (0.6% of the studies). The patients' average age was 6 years and 3 months. All patients presented with situs solitus. Three had a discordant atrioventricular connection and two had a concordant connection. In addition, four patients had a ventriculoarterial connection with a double-outlet right ventricle while one had a concordant connection. Two patients had superior-inferior ventricles. Other associated lesions included ventricular septal defect in all patients, pulmonary stenosis, persistent ductus arteriosus and atrial septal defect in three, pulmonary perforation in one, and a hypoplastic aortic arch in one. In these patients, segmental analysis can be carried out satisfactorily using transthoracic echocardiography.  (+info)

Comparative value of transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography in the assessment of congenital abnormalities of the atrioventricular junction. (4/5)

Information obtained from transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography (two-dimensional echocardiography with spectral Doppler and color flow imaging) was compared in 17 patients with major congenital abnormalities of the atrioventricular (AV) junction (10 discordant AV connections, 1 criss-cross connection, 5 absent right connections and 1 absent left connection). The findings by either technique were correlated with findings at cardiac catheterization (12 patients) and at surgery (5 patients). In two of six patients with an absent AV connection as defined by transthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal imaging demonstrated an imperforate AV valve. In 11 of 11 patients with a discordant or criss-cross connection, assessment of AV valve and ventricular morphology (by defining the chordal attachments of both AV valves) was possible with transesophageal echocardiography (3 of 11 patients by transthoracic echocardiography); chordal straddling was detected in 1 patient and excluded in 3 others with an associated inlet ventricular septal defect. Anomalous pulmonary venous connection (one patient), atrial septal defect (three patients) and subpulmonary stenosis (five patients) were better assessed by transesophageal imaging, and atrial appendage morphology could be demonstrated in all. The transesophageal technique was less useful in demonstrating the anterior subaortic infundibulum or aortopulmonary shunt (two patients). Although systemic ventricular function could be assessed by either method with use of short-axis M-mode scans, transesophageal pulsed Doppler interrogation of AV valve and pulmonary venous flow patterns provided clues to diastolic dysfunction of the systemic ventricle.  (+info)

A 1-month-old girl was referred at our Institution with a history of heart failure and cyanosis. We established diagnosis of multiple congenital heart disease with criss-crossed atrioventricular connections but concordant. This type of anomaly has a variety of presentations of high diagnostic complexity. The multiple lesions included double outlet of the right ventricle, right subaortic stenosis, ventricular septal defect, coarctation of the aorta with hypoplasia of the arch, and persistent patency of the arterial duct, established through echocardiography, angiocardiography and magnetic resonance. These findings prompted palliative surgery and correction of the aortic arch.. During the fourth week of gestation, a pair of anterior cardinal veins form that drain the cephalic part of the embryo and a pair of posterior cardinal veins form that drain the rest. Anterior and posterior cardinal veins join to form a short common cardinal vein (duct of Cuvier), which opens into the respective horns of sinus venosus. The proximal portions of the right anterior cardinal veins and right common cardinal vein form the RSVC. The left anterior cardinal veins normally obliterate to form the ligament of Marshall, whereas the left horn of the sinus venosus and adjacent portion of the left common cardinal vein form the CS. Persistence of the left anterior cardinal vein forms the left SVC, which always continues with the CS as the left common cardinal vein that is part of both the CS and left SVC. Flow of PLSVC blood into the CS results in its enlargement, and a dilated CS is often the first clue for the diagnosis of PLSVC during echocardiography. In 82% to 90% of cases, PLSVC is ...

Two cases are described in which the systemic and pulmonary blood streams cross at atrioventricular level. One was examined pathologically, the other was diagnosed at cardiac catheterization by angiography. Both possessed situs solitus, but in one heart the right atrium was connected to a morphologic right ventricle on the left, whereas in the other it was connected to a left-sided morphologic left ventricle. In both cases transposition of the great arteries was present. The cases have been interpreted as representing rotation of embryonic d- and l-bulboventricular loops following septation.. In attempting to describe these heart difficulties in terminology were encountered which were partially overcome by combining the concepts of concordant and discordant atrioventricular relationships with those of transposition and malposition. However, to give an accurate interpretation of the hearts, it proved necessary to include a term indicating rotation of the bulboventricular loop following septation. ...

A psychoactive hallucinogen, it was declared a U.S. Schedule 1 controlled substance in 1967, and has been illegal in the country since. Though Canada, Mexico and other countries allow it for use in therapeutic clinics to help treat addiction to opiates and other drugs, it remains underground in the U.S., where well-intentioned, self-styled clinicians such as Mugianis make it their mission to crisscross the continent and treat the seemingly endless stream of word-of-mouth individuals asking for their help. In the earthquake and fire that leveled San Francisco on April 18, 1906, 3,000 people died (according to current estimates), about 100,000 people were left homeless, and refugee camps remained in parks for months afterward. In the October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, 11 people were killed in San Francisco alone, more than 1,000 houses and apartments were destroyed or heavily damaged, and about 2,000 people were forced to seek emergency shelter. More than four years in preparation, the 25-page Community Safety Element of the General Plan and an accompanying 69-page report are intended to educate the public about hazards and how to prevent or reduce the disruption they cause. While 234 of the buildings have been seismically retrofitted, often by means of huge steel beams that crisscross windows, 1,024 remain as safety risks, said Kelly Hayden, administrator of San Franciscos seismic loan program for those buildings. EQ-Top Seismic Wallpaper Developed by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), this product is a composite of strong and stiff glass fibers, interwoven to create durable, elastic panels. The fibers crisscross in various directions, so they are both strong and pliable, allowing coverage to distribute energy evenly when the walls shake during an earthquake. Standard wallpaper glue is not enough to keep walls standing in the event of seismic activity. Therefore, KIT began working with Bayers Material Science division to enhance the product. The result was a flexible, yet soft adhesive that contains water and polyurethane beads. The adhesive forms to the grooves in a walls masonry, and as the water evaporates it boosts the wallpaps strength. The fabric was tested in a model home in an earthquake simulator, where the seismic wallpaper allowed the building to remain standing with little damage. The building material is expected to cost more than regular wallpaper, but builders and homeowners ...

Climate change and chemicals like pesticides are driving the crisis.. By Alanna Mitchell, August 25 2014.. Birds are the planets superheroes, built for survival.. The ice of Antarctica doesnt faze them. Nor does the heat of the tropics. They thrive in the desert, in swamps, on the open ocean, on sheer rock faces, on treeless tundra, atop airless mountaintops, and burrowed into barren soil. Some fly nonstop for days on end. With just the feathers on their backs, they crisscross the hemisphere, dodging hurricanes and predators along the way, arriving unerringly at a precise spot, year after year. They have penetrated nearly every ecosystem on Earth and then tailored their own size, habits, and colors to each one, pollinating, dispersing seeds, controlling bugs, cleaning up carrion, and fertilizing plants. But for all their superhero powers, birds are in trouble.. Globally, one in eight-more than 1,300 species-are threatened with extinction, and the status of most of those is deteriorating, ...

October 20, 2003. EL CAJON - Majdolin Yonans eyelids are sunken, the sockets empty. But she can still picture her 2½-year-old daughter, Valantina, who died when bombs hit their apartment building in Mosul, Iraq.. Remembering how her daughter slept and played is an obsession for the 24-year-old, who lost both eyes in the late March war raid.. She cannot see the frightful condition of her own once-beautiful features, although she can feel the haphazard ridges of scars that crisscross her face from the 250 stitches required to repair shrapnel damage.. Majdolins unborn son, who was to be named David, did not survive an emergency Caesarean section at the Iraqi hospital where doctors saved her life.. When Wardiya Yonan first saw Majdolins image on the Al-Jazeera television network at midnight on April 1, she didnt recognize her younger sister.. The news broadcast showed a woman with eyes and forehead covered in bandages and her face darkened by black stitches.. I thought, Oh my God! God help ...

Understanding the effects of land use patterns on soil water and gas transport in the water-wind erosion crisscross region can provide guidance for high-efficiency use of limited soil and water resource in the ecological rehabilitation process on the Loess Plateau. To investigate the cha-racteristics of soil water and gas transport under different land use patterns and to study the relationships between soil saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), air permeability (Ka) and relative gas diffusivity (DP/D0), we collected soil samples (0-5 cm depth) from Caragana korshinskii land, abandoned land, alfalfa land, cropland, and bare land. Ks was measured by constant-head method. DP/D0 was measured by gas chamber method. Ka under field capacity (FC) was measured using the soil gas permeability meter. Results showed that soil bulk density (ρb) ranked as alfalfa land>bare land>abandoned land>C. korshinskii land >cropland, with that of abandoned land, bare land and alfalfa land being significantly ...

The myometrium is the middle layer of the uterine wall, consisting mainly of uterine smooth muscle cells (also called uterine myocytes), but also of supporting stromal and vascular tissue. Its main function is to induce uterine contractions. The myometrium is located between the endometrium (the inner layer of the uterine wall), and the serosa or perimetrium (the outer uterine layer). Myometrium has 3 layers: outer longitudinal smooth muscles, middle crisscrossing (figure of eight) muscle fibres, and inner circular fibres. Middle crisscross fibres act as living ligature during involution of the uterus and prevent blood loss. The inner one-third of the myometrium (termed the junctional or sub-endometrial layer) appears to be derived from the Müllerian duct, while the outer, more predominant layer of the myometrium appears to originate from non-Müllerian tissue, and is the major contractile tissue during parturition and abortion. The junctional layer appears to function like a circular muscle ...

Aging is, well, a totally natural process. When we happen to be in our younger years, not often do we tend to think of ourselves with a criss-cross of wrinkles on our face, grey hair, or even a bald head. However, as those younger years slowly look to be a passing cloud, aging seems like a worrisome curse almost naturally. We all definitely feel like going back to those great looks we possessed about a couple of years ago. We all want to look a lot younger than the present!. We turn to the Hollywood celebrities, who are known to largely extend their screen years, and keep looking younger as they age! We look for that likely secret that keeps them going, and if such procedures would also apply to our case.. The answer is, of course they would! If our dear celebrities on screens can benefit greatly from such procedures, it would definitely be fine for us too.. However, despite the fact that anti-aging care is possibly a good way to go about it, dont you think its a tad too expensive? In fact, ...
One of the most common and versatile is the foam pig which is cut or poured out of an open cell polyurethane foam into the shape of a bullet and is driven through pipelines for many reasons like to prove the inner diameter of the line, clean it, de water it, or dry it out. There are several types of pigs for cleaning in various densities from 2lb to 10lb foam and in special applications up to 20lb. Some have tungsten studs or abrasive wire mesh on the outside to cut rust, scale, or paraffin wax deposits off the inside of the pipe. Other types are fully or criss-cross coated in urethane, or there are bare polyurethane foam pigs with a urethane coating just on the rear to seal and assist in driving the pig. There are also fully molded urethane pigs which are great for liquid removal or batching several different products in one line.. Inline inspection pigs use various methods for inspecting a pipeline. A sizing pig uses one (or more) notched round metal plates as gauges. The notches allow ...

Passengers will log 220 million train rides during the 40-day travel season as they criss-cross the country to celebrate with their families, but just as making the trip home can be laborious -- often lasting one or two days -- so can simply acquiring a seat on the train, and every year complaints arise about the inefficiency or unfairness of the system, although an initiative allowing travelers to purchase tickets online aims to curb long queuing times. less ...
