A pilot study in the recovery and recognition of non-osseointegrated dental implants following cremation. (2/2)

Minimal dimensional changes in free standing dental implants when incinerated in a kiln to a temperature of 1125 degrees C have been reported previously. However, in the same study colour changes were observed between commercially pure titanium and titanium alloy type of implants, with speculation that this change may be a useful distinguishing tool in cases requiring forensic identification. The present study was instigated to determine what changes occur following cremation to bone-supported dental implants placed within mandibles of sheep. A selection of dental implants was photographed and radiographed. They were then surgically placed in sheep mandibles and the entire sheep heads cremated in a commercial cremator. There was detachment of the dental implants from the mandible, which could have implications for scene recovery. Following retrieval and re-irradiating of the implants, image subtraction evaluation of the radiographs was recorded using Adobe((R)) Photoshop.((R)) As with the previous study there was slight oxidation of the implant surfaces leading to minor alteration of the images. There was, however, no gold crust colour change in the commercially pure titanium. Photography within the retrieved implants revealed the batch number within the Straumann implant was still visible, which could significantly add weight to the identification of deceased persons.  (+info)

Note: Todays post is a little graphic in describing how cremation works. I recently wrote about the history of cremation in America and how its becoming more popular every year. However, an alternative form of cremation is gaining attention thats truly different. Resomation, bio-cremation and flameless cremation are a few of the buzzwords used, but…
When I started in this profession, in 1991-remember there was less use of the internet then-funeral homes and cemeteries relied on loyalty and location to promote their businesses. Funeral directors and cemeterians were all involved in the local rotary clubs and chambers of commerce to connect with their communities. Ive known a few funeral directors who even attended services at more than one church each week. Thats my memory of community outreach programs of that era.. In 1996 or 1997, I was working for Wilbert Corporate. One of our licensees in Minneapolis called me and said, Julie, come with me tomorrow night because one of my clients is having their first-ever cremation seminar for consumers. He and a Batesville representative were planning to talk about burial for cremation. I was so impressed with what I saw. That night, from 6-8pm, McReavy Funeral Home in Minneapolis had about 50 consumers come in, mainly couples, and the Batesville representative talked about cremation in general ...

Death and Cremation is an independent feature film starring Brad Dourif and Jeremy Sumpter, and is the first feature from Director Justin Steele. The films supporting cast includes Scott Elrod, Daniel Baldwin, Debbon Ayer, Sam Ingraffia, Staci Keanan, Kate Maher, Blake Hood and Madison Eginton. Death and Cremation is a suburban-set thriller in which the character of Stan (Brad Dourif) operates a crematorium and occasionally seeks to mitigate typical suburban problems with his own macabre style. Stan frequently rejects potential clients, turning away the Weaver family (played by Baldwin, Keanan, and Maher) when they inquire about funeral rates. During that encounter there is a strange lack of concern from Stan about any possible lost income. Stan is soon joined at his establishment by Jarod (Jeremy Sumpter), a Goth outcast who talks his way into an after-school job only to discover that Stans work involves more than just waiting for new business. Brad Dourif as Stan Jeremy Sumpter as Jarod ...

We are actually going to the cremation tomorrow. When Surya told us that we could watch this most significant rite of passage in the Balinese world of rituals and ceremonies, it definitely creeped out some members of our group-not so much the idea of being around death or a dead body, but the worry that wed be horribly gauche Western tourists gate-crashing a funeral. Surya explained that in Bali, cremation is a cause for celebration because the soul is liberated, and the more people that attend the cremation, the more honor is heaped on the family. That goes for tourists (even with cameras). Some wealthy families even advertise their cremations so that more people will come. There are aspects of the rites surrounding death that are private (like the washing of the body), but the march to the cremation grounds-and the cremation itself is a rowdy, celebratory public affair. Surya and Judy told us to wear our sarongs and temple scarves out of respect, and to be ready to go at 9:45 tomorrow ...

Once attendees considered the various aspects of green funeral practices and started to plot their positions along the continuum, they heard from cemeterians and a funeral director who have added them to their operations. Jody Herrington described her success in converting funeral home selection rooms to include green merchandise. She acknowledged how overwhelming it seems to offer yet more options in an already crowded space. Jody shared that her success was directly linked to the communities she has served and their green values. Incorporating local artists along with eco-friendly products and more familiar caskets can be appealing, but every community is unique. You know the communities you serve and should reflect that knowledge. Jody posed a challenging question for me to hear - Is cremation a fall back? At this point some of you are probably nodding your heads in recognition, but I didnt get it at first. Jody asserted that when faced with traditional burial caskets and merchandise, some ...

Christians preferred to bury the dead rather than to cremate the remains, as was common in Roman culture. The Roman catacombs and veneration of relics of saints witness to this preference. For them, the body was not a mere receptacle for a spirit that was the real person, but an integral part of the human person.[72] They looked on the body as sanctified by the sacraments[73] and itself the temple of the Holy Spirit,[74] and thus requiring to be disposed of in a way that honours and reveres it, and they saw many early practices involved with disposal of dead bodies as pagan in origin or an insult to the body.[75]. The idea that cremation might interfere with Gods ability to resurrect the body was refuted as early as the 2nd-century Octavius of Minucius Felix, in which he said: Every body, whether it is dried up into dust, or is dissolved into moisture, or is compressed into ashes, or is attenuated into smoke, is withdrawn from us, but it is reserved for God in the custody of the elements. In this regard, the archaeological study of cremation has much to offer.

Christians preferred to bury the dead rather than to cremate the remains, as was common in Roman culture. The early church carried on Judaisms respect for the human body as being created in Gods image, and followed their practices of speedy interment, in hopes of the future resurrection of all dead. The Roman catacombs and Medieval veneration of relics of Roman Catholic saints witness to this preference. For them, the body was not a mere receptacle for a spirit that was the real person, but an integral part of the human person.[82] They looked on the body as sanctified by the sacraments[83] and itself the temple of the Holy Spirit,[84] and thus requiring to be disposed of in a way that honours and reveres it, and they saw many early practices involved with disposal of dead bodies as pagan in origin or an insult to the body.[85]. The idea that cremation might interfere with Gods ability to resurrect the body was refuted by the 2nd-century Octavius of Minucius Felix, in which he said: Every ...
The Catholic tradition is more resilient than many realize when issues of human life and dignity are compelling.. For most of its history, the Church condemned cremation severely as a violation of the dignity of the human body and an attack on the central Catholic doctrine of the resurrection of the body. It felt so strongly on this issue that a Catholic funeral service was forbidden to all who would choose cremation. Even in those centuries, however, cremation was not only allowed but also considered a moral duty in times of Plague when infection and the lives of others were at issue.. Catholic doctrine forbidding usury or the taking of interest on money continued through its history. Usury is condemned in the Bible and it was affirmed by centuries of Catholic teaching. Yet, when it was clear that the new economic order of the modern period depended on usury for the financial health of the human family, the imputation of interest on money loaned was not only deemed permissible for the world at ...
