Teaching coin summation to the mentally retarded. (1/805)

A procedure to teach four mild and moderately retarded persons to sum the value of coin combinations was tested. Subjects were first taught to count a single target coin, and then to sum that coin in combination with coins previously trained. Five American coins and various combinations were trained. Modelling, modelling with subject participation, and independent counting by the subject constituted the training sequence. The subjects improved from a mean pretest score of 29% to 92% correct at posttest. A four-week followup score showed a mean of 79% correct. A multiple-baseline design suggested that improvement in coin-counting performance occurred only after the coin was trained. The results indicate that this procedure has potential for teaching the retarded to sum combinations of coinds in 5 to 6 hr of instruction.  (+info)

Equivalence class establishment, expansion, and modification in preschool children. (2/805)

Preschool children were taught four two-choice match-to-sample conditional discriminations with 10 arbitrary visual stimuli. For 6 participants, 2 of the 10 stimuli served as the sample, or conditional, stimuli in all discriminations. For 5 additional participants, the same pair of stimuli served as the discriminative, or comparison, stimuli in all discriminations. Equivalence classes were established with more participants in the latter group, replicating prior research with participants with retardation. Four participants, in whom equivalence classes were established and who were available for further participation, were exposed to new conditional discriminations without trial-by-trial feedback and involving some novel and some familiar stimuli. Consistent conditional responding was observed, and tests for inclusion of the novel stimuli in the original classes showed class expansion. Training to reverse the unreinforced conditional performances produced a reversal of class membership in 3 of 4 participants, an outcome not consistent with other studies. The results are discussed with respect to the interaction of class structure and size.  (+info)

Associations between an asthma morbidity index and ideas of fright and bother in a community population. (3/805)

There is a need for simple asthma outcome measures for primary care which are not only valid in terms of their relationship with lung function but also in terms of pragmatic psychological constructs. This study assesses the usefulness of adding items on the degree of 'bother' and 'fright' caused by the condition to a previously validated simple asthma morbidity index. A postal questionnaire survey comprising a simple asthma morbidity index and questions on 'fright' and 'bother' was conducted in one general practice in the north-east of England. Responses were obtained from 570 individuals. Of these, 184 (32%) reported low, 133 (23%) medium and 253 (44%) high morbidity. Twenty-nine per cent of respondents had felt frightened by their asthma in the previous 4 weeks. Both the 'fright' and 'bother' items were significantly associated with the morbidity index. The addition of 'bother' and/or 'fright' questions may improve both the content, construct and predictive validity of the morbidity index, but this needs to be established prospectively.  (+info)

Origins of theory of mind, cognition and communication. (4/805)

There has been a revolution in our understanding of infant and toddler cognition that promises to have far-reaching implications for our understanding of communicative and linguistic development. Four empirical findings that helped to prompt this change in theory are analyzed: (a) Intermodal coordination--newborns operate with multimodal information, recognizing equivalences in information across sensory-modalities; (b) Imitation--newborns imitate the lip and tongue movements they see others perform; (c) Memory--young infants form long-lasting representations of perceived events and use these memories to generate motor productions after lengthy delays in novel contexts; (d) Theory of mind--by 18 months of age toddlers have adopted a theory of mind, reading below surface behavior to the goals and intentions in people's actions. This paper examines three views currently being offered in the literature to replace the classical framework of early cognitive development: modularity-nativism, connectionism, and theory-theory. Arguments are marshaled to support the "theory-theory" view. This view emphasizes a combination of innate structure and qualitative reorganization in children's thought based on input from the people and things in their culture. It is suggested that preverbal cognition forms a substrate for language acquisition and that analyzing cognition may enhance our understanding of certain disorders of communication.  (+info)

Category learning and perceptual categorization in schizophrenia. (5/805)

The aim of this study was to evaluate category learning in schizophrenia on tests of perceptual abstraction. Participants learned to categorize simple geometrical shapes. The categories were either well-defined (discrete categories, or DCs) or ill-defined (graded categories, or GCs). In DCs, the cues defining category membership can be verbalized in an all-or-none fashion, while in GCs they cannot be defined unambiguously. Three types of learning were used successively: serial presentation of category-exemplars, verbal description, and feedback. After the serial presentation, schizophrenia patients showed a deficit for GCs (p<0.005) but not for DCs (p = 0.98). After the verbal definition of GCs, the difference between schizophrenia patients and controls diminished (p = 0.09). Finally, after the feedback learning of GCs, a significant difference was observed again (p<0.0001), suggesting that schizophrenia patients were impaired in this learning paradigm. The GC-learning impairment after the serial presentation displayed a relationship with the score of the cognitive component assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (r = -0.66). In conclusion, these results suggest that the perceptual stage of abstraction is impaired in schizophrenia. This impairment can be partially compensated by instructions via top-down verbal processes.  (+info)

Second-order belief attribution in Williams syndrome: intact or impaired? (6/805)

Second-order mental state attribution in a group of children with Williams syndrome was investigated. The children were compared to age, IQ, and language-matched groups of children with Prader-Willi syndrome or nonspecific mental retardation. Participants were given two trials of a second-order reasoning task. No significant differences between the Williams syndrome and Prader-Willi or mentally retarded groups on any of the test questions were found. Results contrast with the view that individuals with Williams syndrome have an intact theory of mind and suggest that in their attributions of second-order mental states, children with Williams syndrome perform no better than do other groups of children with mental retardation.  (+info)

Analysis of activity preferences as a function of differential consequences. (7/805)

Individuals who do not possess the verbal skills to express meaningful choice in the absence of its consequences may have difficulty indicating their preference for protracted activities that are unavailable until some time in the future (e.g., taking a walk, riding a bike). When we examined the preferences of 4 individuals with developmental disabilities by showing them pictorial representations of various activities, their initial choices showed no clear preferences. In a subsequent condition, selecting a photograph resulted in brief access to the depicted activity. When selections produced differential consequences (i.e., access to the activity), clear preferences emerged. In addition, 3 individuals' preferences were later shifted to an initially less preferred but more socially desirable option by superimposing additional reinforcement contingencies for engaging in the less preferred activity. Results are discussed in terms of the conditions under which choice functions as an indicator of preference and how those conditions may be altered to improve the quality of choice making without limiting access to preferred options.  (+info)

The left hemisphere's role in hypothesis formation. (8/805)

In a probability guessing experiment, subjects try to guess which of two events will occur next. Humans tend to match the frequency of previous occurrences in their guesses. Animals other than humans tend to maximize or always choose the option that has occurred the most frequently in the past. Investigators have argued that frequency matching results from the attempt of humans to find patterns in sequences of events even when told the sequences are random. There is independent evidence that the left hemisphere of humans houses a cognitive mechanism that tries to make sense of past occurrences. We performed a probability guessing experiment with two split-brain patients and found that they approximated frequency matching in their left hemispheres and approached maximizing in their right hemispheres. We obtained a conceptual replication of that finding on patients with unilateral damage to either the left or right hemisphere. We conclude that the neural processes responsible for searching for patterns in events are housed in the left hemisphere.  (+info)

One of the areas of focus on object permanence has been how physical disabilities (blindness, cerebral palsy and deafness) and intellectual disabilities (Down syndrome, etc.) affect the development of object permanence. In a study that was performed in 1975-76, the results showed that the only area where children with intellectual disabilities performed more weakly than children without disabilities was along the lines of social interaction. Other tasks, such as imitation and causality tasks, were performed more weakly by the children without disabilities. However, object permanence was still acquired similarly because it was not related to social interaction. Some psychologists believe that while object permanence alone may not predict communicative achievement, object permanence along with several other sensorimotor milestones, plays a critical role in, and interacts with, the communicative development of children with severe disabilities.[27] This was observed in 2006, in a study ...
(Im)permanence: Cultures in/out of Time explores the interplay between permanence and impermanence in cultural and artistic practices in the West and elsewhere. This volume engenders questions of the transition from traditional and contemporary takes on permanence in art, the preservation of ephemeral artwork, permanence and impermanence as understood in the Western, East Asian, and American Indian cultures, and art forms and permanence.
The Coevolution of Antibodies for Concept Learning - We present a novel approach to concept learning in which a coevolutionary genetic algorithm is applied to the construction of an immune system whose antibodies can discriminate between examples and counter-examples of a given concept. This approach is more general than traditional symbolic approaches to concept learning and can be applied in situations where preclassified training examples are not necessarily available. An experimental study is described in which a coevolutionary immune system adapts itself to one of the standard machine learning data sets. The resulting immune system concept description and a description produced by a traditional symbolic concept learner are compared and contrasted.
An emerging class of theories of knowledge assumes that the representation and processing of concepts is achieved by reactivating multiple aspects of experience. Abstract concepts such as freedom and justice constitute a challenge for these theories because they have no clearly identifiable referent that we can experience. The Words As social Tools theory (WAT) posits that while both concrete and abstract concepts activate sensorimotor networks, the linguistic network is activated more by abstract than by concrete concepts given that the mode of acquisition of abstract concepts relies more on language. In this chapter we extend this argument and report results from an experiment with the Extrinsic Simon task suggesting that when we process abstract words we re-enact the experience of their acquisition and/or explain to ourselves their meaning.
The present survey develops a previous position paper, in which I suggested that the multimodal semantic impairment observed in advanced stages of semantic dementia is due to the joint disruption of pictorial and verbal representations, subtended by the right and left anterior temporal lobes, rather than to the loss of a unitary, amodal semantic system. The main goals of the present review are (a) to survey a larger set of data, in order to confirm the differences in conceptual representations at the level of the right and left hemispheres, (b) to examine if language-mediated information plays a greater role in left hemisphere semantic knowledge than sensory-motor information in right hemisphere conceptual knowledge, and (c) to discuss the models that could explain both the differences in conceptual representations at the hemispheric level and the prevalence of the left hemisphere language-mediated semantic knowledge over the right hemisphere perceptually based conceptual representations.
For children unable to live with their birth family, there are a number of permanence options for social work practitioners to consider. The newest of these is Fostering for Adoption (FfA), introduced into England and Wales by the Government in 2013. This Good Practice Guide considers its effect on the landscape of permanence planning, and on the children, carers and practitioners involved. Who are the children being placed? How have agencies and carers managed the complexities of this option? And can we identify best practice that has evolved in this field?. FfA is designed to reduce the number of moves a child may experience prior to being permanently placed, and to enable significantly earlier attachments between children and permanent carers. However, it can be complex in practice and, like concurrent planning, needs careful thought and organisation. ...

In the current investigation, a prototype for the remote assessment of cognitive skills, the remote neuropsychological assessment (RNA) model, was proposed, and the development and validation of a computerized, Internet-based neuropsychological assessment measure was undertaken to demonstrate the utility and effectiveness of this untapped model of assessment delivery. The Remote Neuropsychological Assessment-Category Test (RNA-CT), a test of abstract concept formation administered via the World Wide Web (WWW), was developed and contrasted with a conventional, non-computerized version of the measure---the Booklet Category Test (BCT). Traditional and novel measurement variables from both measures were compared in a randomized group design of normal college-educated subjects in an attempt to demonstrate equivalence between the conventional assessment and RNA model. Comparison of the equivalence between administration types suggests significant convergence for total error, subtest error variables, and

He will explain how to recognize image oxidation-the most common kind of deterioration-and how to distinguish it from effects of poor fixing and washing. Much has been learned on this topic in the last 25 years, some of it quite surprising. For example too much archival washing can actually cause a print to fade. He will show examples and offer advice on housing and display.. ...

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content: The Permanence of Masks Christopher Origer On the boundary ofyour town it stands, a palisade ofconscientious signs bolted to posts or nailed to trees. Maybe youve read such messages of tolerance and hope elsewhere, in big cities and smaU towns across the country : The City ofBrotherly Love. The Good Neighbor City. Maybe you remember skimming the messages on roadside signs that are attributed to faceless individuals: A Good Place to Live says no one in particular. Such signs possess a direct, simple-hearted appeal that welcomes the weary travelerjust arriving at the front gates. Sometimes the sponsors can be found on the sign-the local chamber ofcommerce, the local churches, the fraternal organizations with their lions, closed circles, and other symbols suggesting unity. Judging by appearances, most of these signs are maintained. Like an epigraph , the message they present is an imphcit promise, suggesting what one may hope to ...

The Encyclopedia of World Problems and Human Potential was initiated in 1972 following a collaboration between two international non-profits, the Union of International Associations (UIA) and Mankind 2000. It is the result of an ambitious effort to collect and present information on the problems humanity is confronted with, as well as the challenges such problems pose to societies values, development strategies and concept formation. The online version of the resource is currently undergoing significant transformation, and the publishing model is changing in exciting new ways. The main points are:. ...
We strive to develop open-minded collaborators and articulate communicators at Gillispie. Every child and adult has to navigate working with others on a daily basis and the tools needed to be an effective collaborator and communicator are not ones students are born with. Skills like these need to be explicitly taught, practiced, and reflected upon just as any other subject in school. Through group projects, students have a platform that not only develops these skills but also helps them apply curriculum content in different ways. At the completion of a group project, reflection is key to strengthening childrens understanding. These reflection sessions allow students to share strategies, celebrate successes, and take on challenges with a fail forward mentality. This Design Thinking mindset is one that we encourage during all projects which are iterative in nature and ask students to look at failures as a springboard for learning and improvement.. The language used during reflection sessions ...
Annotation: Empirical qualitative research on childrens understanding of subject matter permits to capture the relative diversity of pupils interpretations concerning a particular theme. It is through the use of interview in the phenomenographical context that the authors try to identify the immediate understanding students statements enables them to distinguish five qualitatively homogenous types: wrongly structured, dogmatic, naive, acceptable, others. Coherency of statement, its meanigfulness and its relation to scientific interpretation provide a criterion. Quantification of statements revealed a high quotient of students misconceptions concerning photosynthesis which seems to be a general phenomenon in education.. ...
Its great to be a STEM teacher these days! We have a plethora of technology tools to help us improve teaching and learning in our classroom. One of the greatest tools for teaching science and math that I have used are online simulations. The following simulation products are my favorites and are similar in many ways. I use all of them in my classroom several times a week, and almost daily to help me bring abstract concepts to life for my students. I am a proponent of inquiry based learning. I allow my students to experiment with simulations and labs to allow them to experience the concepts they are learning about first hand. I love each of these simulation programs for the following reasons:. Great Interactive Simulations: They are vibrant, colorful, fun, and interactive. Students get to explore very abstract concepts by inquiring about how the simulation works, making hypotheses, testing hypotheses, and drawing conclusions from their observations.. Developmental Psychiatrists expound the theory that our intellect and personality develops in a series of stages. Our cognitive development occurs through a process where actions prompt thought processes, which influence the actions the next time around. Infants learn about object permanence, that a person or object still exists, even if the infant cannot see it. But it seems as adults we can believe in the make-belief. We can believe in a Deity - a creator and ruler of the universe and source of all moral authority; the Supreme Being. Something; a Someone that weve never really seen much less heard from. Sure, there is some positive psychology to be gained from Monotheistic religions; the extent of which is a matter of individuals and their private faith. Much has also been said about the psychology of religion and anxiety - our inevitable deaths elicits crippling existential anxiety. Our belief in the paranormal reduces our anxiety about death being the end. Such beliefs are protective - ...
In fairness to two year olds everywhere, kids are selfish little heathens because they have no concept of the other as themselves. They just figured out object permanence as in, when I hide the ball behind my back it doesnt cease to exist. Something as abstract as a social contract among humans is still a few years off. Adults on the other hand, understand what it is like to be hurt (emotionally or physically) and get the concept that hurting others isnt really good because you dont want THEM to hurt YOU. And not just in a we agree not to kill each other way, but in an understanding, compassionate, it sucks to get hurt so Im not gonna hurt others, kinda way ...

Naturally, we dont want our beloved animals going into adoptive homes where they will be mentally or physically abused or neglected. Since statistically this is more often the case when small children are involved, we give preference to homes with mature adults. On the other hand, I cant imagine a child growing up without animal companions. And what happens when we adopt to a perfect young couple who decide at a later date to add human babies to their family? Do we want these adopters to get rid of their bunnies? Certainly not. In fact, we feel we have made an error in judgement when a past adopter calls to say, I want to return the bunny now that Im pregnant.. This is a disillusioning encounter, offset only by the numerous photos we get of toddlers and bunnies from parents who have have cared enough to work things out in spite of the inconvenience. These parents are giving their children more than a collection of toys. By placing value on relationships with living things, they are laying ...
The chart gives a rough sense of how zones could be divided up. As with all things, context matters, and various enterprises dont always fit into a neat little box. For example, on our farm, the woodlot is not zone 4 but zone 1; we harvest mushrooms there almost daily in the growing season, as well as raise ducks, tap trees for syrup, and host kids programs in the woods. On other farms, the woodlot may only be visited in the winter or spring for firewood harvesting.. The big picture. Zooming back to have a look at the whole list, it is likely that a few of the items will be the main challenges for you on your land. The degree to which others have been decided for you in the past also comes into play here; some sites are a clean slate while others already have established infrastructure and patterns of use. Especially in the latter case, its worth considering making changes if the previous owners decisions dont match with your own.. In my experience, the most critical elements that rise to ...
Long-term Ink Permanence. The big surprise came a couple of weeks after I made the test sheets. Experimenting with a drawing Id done earlier, I realized that the ink that had washed previously was now permanent. Curious, I went back to the test sheets and made a new waterbrush mark (shown on the left side of the test sheets) on each of the original lines. Most still responded in the same way as before, but the Zebra Double-Sided Brush Pen, the Kuretake No. 55, the two Kuretake Fudegokochi pens (regular and super-fine) and the Pentel Fude Touch Brush Sign Pen all diminished in solubility. In fact, the two Fudegokochi and Pentel pens were essentially waterproof after the passage of those weeks, showing no solubility at all.. Since I generally finish a sketch in one sitting and wash lines immediately after making them, the delayed permanence is not a factor I would consider as long as I knew an ink was soluble to begin with. But if you make a line drawing first and continue working on it quite a ...

Part of the difference lies in the permanence and commitment of the deacon. Yes, any layperson could go start a school. Then, five years from now, the layperson might say, Im tired of this, Im going to go do something else. Theres a permanence involved with being a deacon that you cant just walk away from.. Second, as Ive said, the deacon ought to be focused outside the parish, not just on the parish itself.. And third, a deacon has to present the totality of what the church believes. A layperson can focus all of his or her energy on whatever issues they want to focus on. You have that freedom. But as an ordained person, you have a responsibility to do the best you can to present all of it.. When I was deacon director for the Archdiocese of Washington in the mid-90s, I had a guy come in for the initial interview. I said, What do you see yourself doing as a deacon that youre not already doing as an involved layman? He said, Preaching. I said, Whats your first homily about? He ...

The main element that distinguishes the reception of the Neolithic from that of the Paleolithic is that the first was never revealed: in its megalithic version, it was always part of the landscape and, such as, it was perceived, known, and interpreted according to specific and changing legends and fictions as a remote, albeit totally enigmatic, origin. In her talk, Maria Stavrinaki will focus on moments of the uses of the Neolithic after its identification as a specific prehistoric period, which prehistorians radically cut off from the Paleolithic. Starting from the 1930s and the uses of the Neolithic by British modernism, she will explore the latters ideological ambivalence towards internationalism, machinism, and the masses. The comparison to the Neolithic of American artists of the 1960s and 1970s such as Robert Morris and Robert Smithson serve as counterpoint. Then, concentrating on some discourses and practices developed in reaction to Hiroshima, she explores the ways that theoreticians and

Dual coding is the idea that the combination of verbal association (spoken or written) and visual imagery results in better learning. Well-designed graphic illustrations contribute to depicting models clearly, representing abstract concepts and revealing underlying knowledge structures that help learners make the required connections to enable learning to take place.. Thats not to say we should populate teaching resources with superfluous illustrations - which in any case often contribute to resources becoming dated prematurely - but that we should focus instead on pairing text with carefully chosen graphics that will support learning by presenting examples and depicting overarching ideas or concepts and explaining how these ideas and concepts connect.. In short, we should avoid illustrations that merely liven up, add colour or add fun to a resource and use instead diagrams, tables, photographs or drawings that will serve a pedagogical purpose whenever possible. If the answer to the ...

By tradition, Buddhists are accustomed to sitting in concentration at the feet of an image of the Buddha, although according to their belief nothing really does exist which cannot be reasonably understood. There seems to be no logical explanation for this custom, which obviously appears to contradict the principle of rejecting all interpretations of abstract concepts, nevertheless, this paradox does certainly reveal a deep mystical teaching. In fact, while sitting in attunement with the Buddha-image, the devotees feel profoundly inspired by that very atmosphere of inner Peace received through the impressions of an enlightened Buddha, impressions which become reality for those whose deep concentration merges with the idea of enlightenment ...
Chain-Node Model (Figure. 1) is a brand new Complex Modeling Concept incorporating its detailed structure description with universal applicability. Instead of treating complex as a whole while ignoring their basic composition and structure, Chain-Node Model view complex as a construction of it basic Parts. Just as its name implies, our model includes two components: Chain and Node. As a correspondence to natural polymer chains, each Chain consists of an arrangement of its basic unit, Part, whose concept has been greatly extended and includes but not limited to Biobrick Parts. The Node component is not a natural correspondence but an abstract concept to describe binding states of two or more parts: each binding will create a Node. The abstract nodes may continue to bind with other parts or nodes to form a tree structure. However, parts or nodes in bound states are not allowed to bind again. With help of chains and nodes, it is possible to model any complex with arbitrary architecture. Simple and ...
Montessori students have the chance to learn both academically, and with more tactile activities with a focus on sensory-motor activities. They can develop their cognitive powers by focusing on what they can touch, taste, see, hear and smell.. The Montessori system can be used by children of all ages. In the elementary years, a child has the chance to learn a lot through the Montessori system as they learn and grow. They can develop an understanding of the world and learn how to learn so that as they grow older they have a framework with which to approach more abstract concepts, and to understand not just facts and figures, but how to organise them, and how to approach the world while understanding things like justice, freedom and equity.. Critical thinking is one of the best parts of the Montessori method. A child that starts at a Montessori kindergarten will learn to question the what, how and why of every issue, so that they can build their own approach to learning, and not simply learn by ...
My theory is, actual real-world adaptation makes the problem of global warming too real. Its one thing when adaption is an abstract concept describing something we may do in the future. But when it actually comes down to spending tens of billions of dollars on flood defenses, planned retreat from parts of the coastline, restoring wetlands, lowering levees, hardening the power grid, and beefing up the first responder network -- well, if you start spending that kind of money (hundreds of billions for starters, talking about the US alone), people might get to wondering why this global warming stuff is so gosh darned expensive and getting more so. And that might lead them to ask when we are going to stop adding to the bill by spewing billions of tons of CO2 into the air ...

And that might lead them to ask when we are going to stop adding to the bill by spewing billions of tons of CO2 into the air ...
Partiality arises when an arbitrator somehow favours one of the parties, or when he is prejudiced in relation to the subject matter of the dispute.. Impartiality means freedom from favouritism or bias either by word or by action, and a commitment to serve all parties as opposed to a single party 11. Impartiality is a more abstract concept than independence in the sense that it implies a state of mind, which is difficult to measure and quantify.. Impartiality has been especially studied in relation to judges. Fairness and impartiality must be both subjectively present and objectively demonstrated to the informed and reasonable observer. The trial will be rendered unfair if the words or actions of the judge give rise to a reasonable apprehension of bias to the informed and reasonable observer. Judges must be particularly sensitive to the need not only to be fair but also to appear to all reasonable observers to be fair.. The apprehension of bias must be a reasonable one held by reasonable and ...
This course covers basic epidemiologic methods and concepts, including study design, calculation and interpretation of measures of disease frequency and measures of effect, sources of inaccuracy in experimental and observational studies, causal inference, and an introduction to the statistical evaluation and interpretation of epidemiological data. Students will discuss historical examples and recent studies in order to apply their understanding of abstract concepts and specific quantitative methods to the interpretation and critique of published work.
Time is an abstract concept; it is something which governs events, and the passage of which happens even in the absence of clocks and watches. People with FAS/E are largely unaware of time. It has little meaning for them and is not a valid method for negotiating a day, week, month, or year. Our culture works on time; it controls, to a very large extent, everything we do. The person with FAS/E who does not grasp the concepts involved, even if able to tell time , is still unable to internally structure time in a way which would allow for its use. The implications for independent function are not to be underestimated. Adults with FAS/E {not to mention children as well} do not keep appointments. They do not follow through on instructions. They do not remember when a meal time is; never mind when they or the child last ate. They do not show up for work on time, and do not come back from lunch on time. They seem oblivious to the days of the week and seasons of the year all sequential cycles of time. ...
Mans biological classification reveals his relationship to simpler organisms. However in the smallest subdivision, species, man stands alone. But ultimately he is related even to the tiny ameba. Man is a vertebrate of the mammal class, of the pimate order, genus Homo, and species Sapiens. Being a primate means that he has stereoscopic, or three-dimensional, vision and a pair of hands with grasping fingers and flat fingernails. As a member of the genus Homo, he has an erect posture, with one strong finger (thumb) opposing the other four. An being Sapiens as species means that he has well-developed frontal lobes and motor and sensory capacities for producing and understanding a complex language which entails abstract concepts. ...

Concept maps were used in 21 schools of the MIUR Pilot Project Le parole della scienza with the participation of 6,000 Italian children to promote meaningful learning. The experience with concept maps described in this paper refers to scientific language teaching to 4-5 year old children in kindergarten. In 2003-2004 school year 56 children built concept maps in two different classes. Children produced a total of about 180 maps on their notebooks regarding manipulation experiences with the following objects: pumpkin, nest, papier-mâché, vintage, cement, water, orange, sand. Another significant aspect of the experience in Falconara Alta is the creation of concept maps with drawings, following manipulation and clinical conversation with the teacher. Concept maps proved useful because they stimulated and facilitated childrens reflection on experience and experience organization, making meanings and knowledge emerge in children. The comparison and sharing of learning favored the development of ...
Between seven and ten months, babies brains experience a huge cognitive stride and they develop something called object permanence. Basically, object permanence is the notion that even though something is not physically present, it still exists. Prior to this stage, babies could only conceptualize what was physically in front of them. Cover a four-month-olds favorite toy with a blanket, and they might look at you briefly but quickly move on to something else. Cover a nine-month-olds favorite toy with a blanket and they will likely try to pick up that blanket to retrieve their toy. How cool is this!?. I also get nerdy and excited when hearing about the development of separation anxiety because it is a sign of a healthy attachment relationship between parent and child. This is the time when babies start to think, Ok, that babysitter can feed me, bathe me, and put me to bed, but Id much prefer my mom so Im going to go ahead and cry to let everyone know.. As your baby begins to grasp this ...
Separation anxiety is common for infants between the ages of eight and fourteen months and occurs as infants begin to understand their own selfhood-or understand that they are separate persons from their primary caregiver. Infants oftentimes look for their caregivers to give them a sense of comfort and familiarity, which causes separation to become challenging.[34] Subsequently, the concept of object permanence emerges-which is when children learn that something still exists when it cannot be seen or heard, thus increasing their awareness of being separated from their caregiver. Consequently, during the developmental period where an infants sense self, incorporating object permanence as well, the child also begins to understand that they can in fact be separated from their primary caregiver. They see this separation as something final though, and dont yet understand that their caregiver will return causing fear and distress for the infant. It is when an individual (infant, child, or otherwise) ...
The purpose of this study is to examine relationships among pre-service science teachers conceptual knowledge of electric current, motivational beliefs, and self-regulation. One hundred and twenty-seven students (female = 107, male = 20) enrolled in the science education program of a public university in Ankara participated the study. A concept map technique was used to determine students conceptual knowledge level of electric current. To determine students motivational beliefs and self-regulation, a scale developed by Velayutham, Aldridge, and Fraser (2011) was first translated into Turkish and adapted to Turkish culture and then used as a measurement tool. Results showed that students motivational beliefs were positively associated with their self-regulation, and students task value, self-efficacy, and self-regulation were positively related with students conceptual knowledge of electric current. These results show that students motivational beliefs and self-regulation have

A concept map is a visual organizer that can enrich students understanding of a new concept. Using a graphic organizer, students think about the concept in several ways. Most concept map organizers engage students in answering questions such as, What is it? What is it like? What are some examples? Concept maps deepen understanding and comprehension.
A concept map can clarify even the most complicated ideas by presenting information in an easy-to-understand visual format. This nervous system concept map example shows the components that make up the human nervous system, along with their various roles. The present study analyses self-regulatory perspectives related to healthy eating behaviour. The research aims to examine the ideas that children and adolescents have about their own self-regulation and what aspects are important in order to resist food temptations. This study it is included in a major European research project named TEMPEST http-//tempestproject.eu/. The qualitative method concept mapping was used. To the sample composed by 100 individuals of both genders, aged between 12 and 17 years old, were applied the three stages of concept mapping process. The students belonged to different schools of districts of Leiria and Santarem, in Portugal. Two classes were selected with students between 12 and 14 years old, one with a low socio-economic status and other with a high socio-economic status. At the same time, two other classes were selected with students with ages between 14 and 17 years and with the same socio-economic status features. Socio-economic status was defined according to ...

Research has found that declines in temporal information processing (TIP), the rate at which auditory information is processed, underlies the progressive loss of function across multiple cognitive systems in the elderly, including new learning, memory, perception, attention, thinking, motor control, problem solving, and concept formation. In a new study, scientists have found that elderly subjects who underwent temporal training improved not only the rate at which they processed auditory information, but also in other cognitive areas. The study is published in the current issue of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience. Our study showed for the first time significant benefits of temporal training on broad aspects of cognitive function in the elderly. The results were long-lasting, with effects confirmed 18 months after the training, says lead investigator Elzbieta Szelag, Professor, Head of Laboratory of Neuropsychology, Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology (www.nencki.gov.pl), and Warsaw ...

In proto-writing, used for inventories and the like, physical objects are represented by stylized or conventionalized pictures, or pictograms. For example, the pictorial Dongba symbols without Geba annotation cannot represent the Naxi language, but are used as a mnemonic for reciting oral literature.[1] Some systems also use ideograms, symbols denoting abstract concepts.. The term ideogram is often used to describe symbols of writing systems such as Egyptian hieroglyphs, Sumerian cuneiform and Chinese characters. However, these symbols are logograms, representing words or morphemes of a particular language rather than objects or concepts. In these writing systems, a variety of strategies were employed in the design of logographic symbols. Pictographic symbols depict the object referred to by the word, such as an icon of a bull denoting the Semitic word ʾālep ox. Some words denoting abstract concepts may be represented iconically, but most other words are represented using the rebus ...

I have a box of Christmas decorations that has sat unopened for over ten years. I have another box filled with holiday CDs and some two dozen videos. Ill load up my iPod with hours of joyful, nostalgic music and listen while I exercise and take my daily walks. Every evening, and on the more inclement afternoons, Ill watch a holiday movie and get lost in the story. What I cant do is make a connection between what I knew and whats happening now.. Its like object permanence in reverse - my disorder short circuits at the memory bank and the deficit costs me the fullness of the experience.. I cant keep a thing in mind for very long. When an experience is over, I can barely remember it, if at all. Medicine and therapy dont change this. Its a function of my schizophrenia, right in there with cognitive impairment and attention deficit, symptoms that sometimes get overlooked by the professionals.. Medicated, I may be more objective, but this phenomenon remains unaffected by the introduction of ...

Applications of Graph Transformations with Industrial Relevance Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2004, Volume 3062/2004, 90-105, DOI: 10.1007/978-3-540-25959-6_7 In this paper we discuss how tools for conceptual design in civil engineering can be developed using graph transformation specifications. These tools consist of three parts: (a) for elaborating specific conceptual knowledge (knowledge engineer), (b) for working out conceptual design results (architect), and (c) automatic consistency analyses which guarantee that design results are consistent with the underlying specific conceptual knowledge. For the realization of such tools we use a machinery based on graph transformations. In a traditional PROGRES tool specification the conceptual knowledge for a class of buildings is hard-wired within the specification. This is not appropriate for the experimentation platform approach we present in this paper, as objects and relations for conceptual knowledge are due to many changes, implied by ...

Whitehead and Nietzsche, indefatigable process philosophers, march to decidedly different philosophic drums. Yet at a striking junction, they cross paths. Both find human life and the temporal world of becoming plagued by an ultimate evil that is deeply involved with the nature of time -- in particular, with the essential passage of time and the temporal dimension of the past. Time threatens to devour human significance and the humanly good life.. But here the similarities end. At this crossroads, Whitehead and Nietzsche meet face to face, locked in a fundamental quarrel over the particular evil of times passage. For Whitehead, temporal process inevitably destroys worldly achievements. The temporal advance of the universe militates against any lasting permanence, against any realm of final, worldly being (PR 340/ 517). The destruction of a realm of permanence or being is precisely the evil of becoming and process, an evil which Whitehead refuses to accept as final. It must be overcome. Yet this ...

To test the image permanence of prints that are stored in an album, we use an accelerated testing method similar to how the image permanence of silver-halide photo papers are measured when stored in dark places. Print samples are printed with the optical density of 1.0 (each Bk, C, M,Y). The samples are kept in a certain environment of high temperature and 50% humidity. The rate of the decrease in the optical density and rate of yellow discoloration are recorded. The recorded results are then converted to the length of time when print image is kept in an environment of 23℃/ 50% humidity. ,Criteria for estimation of print longevity, The point where monochromatic/ reflective optical density shows loss of 30% (starting density of 1.0). ...
|p style=text-indent:20px;|A non-constant eco-epidemiological model with SIS-type infectious disease in prey is formulated and investigated, it is assumed that the disease is endemic in prey before the invasion of predator and that predation is more likely on infected prey than on the uninfected. Sufficient conditions for both permanence and extinction of the infected prey, and the necessary conditions for the permanence of the infected prey are established. It is shown that the predation preference to infected prey may even increase the possibility of disease endemic, and that the introduction of new resource for predator could be helpful for it to eradicate the infected prey. Numerical simulations have been performed to verify/extend our analytical results.|/p|

Grounded cognition approaches to conceptual representations postulate a close link between conceptual knowledge and the sensorimotor brain systems. The present fMRI study tested, whether a feature-specific representation of concepts, as previously demonstrated for nouns, can also be found for action- and sound-related verbs. Participants were presented with action- and soundrelated verbs along with pseudoverbs while performing a lexical decision task. Sound-related verbs activated auditory areas in the temporal cortex, whereas action-related verbs activated brain regions in the superior frontal gyrus and the cerebellum, albeit only at a more liberal threshold. This differential brain activation during conceptual verb processing partially overlapped with or was adjacent to brain regions activated during the functional localizers probing sound perception or action execution. Activity in brain areas involved in the processing of action information was parametrically modulated by ratings of action ...
Hi Kjetil, Ive tried to read the three mails you posted in the IRC [1] http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-swd-wg/2007Jan/0069.html [2] http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-swd-wg/2007Mar/0049.html [3] http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-swd-wg/2007Apr/0015.html but have some problems understanding the link between them Could you confirm that [1] and [2] are related to the same problem, that is linking SKOS concepts (or tags interpreted as SKOS concepts) to resources denoting real entities? For instance, you would like to say that abstract concepts mythesaurus:henryVIIIConcept are related (by means of some reference link) to concrete things like myontology:henryVIIIPerson where henryVIIIPerson is an instance of foaf:Person This is related (but not equivalent) to the problem I raised in [4] http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-swd-wg/2007Jun/0077.html which says that some SKOS concepts could be associated to classes (i.e. set of instances) in an ontology. For example ...
All students need to learn academic language, defined by Zwiers (2014) as the set of words, grammar, and discourse strategies used to decode and encode complex ideas, higher-order thinking processes, and abstract concepts. Academic language in English class can include literary terms (used in literary and nonliterary contexts), morphology concepts, and terms that describe language, common metaphors, folkloric expressions, and English etymology. This may also include allusions to other text and idioms (which can be especially challenging for English language learners (ELLs)). Most students do not acquire academic language naturally but instead learn it as a result of instruction in school (Gee, 1989). Teaching academic language in English studies, especially to ELLs and speakers of nonstandard dialects of English, while maintaining an appreciation for language diversity helps motivate an appreciation for language generally, which becomes necessary in the study of diverse works of literature, ...

Below is the abstract of the paper: Understanding sequential information is a fundamental task for artificial intelligence. Current neural networks attempt to learn spatial and temporal information as a whole, limited their abilities to represent large scale spatial representations over long-range sequences. Here, we introduce a new modeling strategy called Semi-Coupled Structure (SCS), which consists of deep neural networks that decouple the complex spatial and temporal concepts learning. Semi-Coupled Structure can learn to implicitly separate input information into independent parts and process these parts respectively. Experiments demonstrate that a Semi-Coupled Structure can successfully annotate the outline of an object in images sequentially and perform video action recognition. For sequence-to-sequence problems, a Semi-Coupled Structure can predict future meteorological radar echo images based on observed images. Taken together, our results demonstrate that a Semi-Coupled Structure has ...
A mental metaphor is a strategy that consists of completing the representation of a concept with structural components of a correlating concept. Three issues were addressed here to deepen our understanding of this mechanism: the use of mental metaphors between abstract concepts, the simultaneous activation of multiple mental metaphors and the importance of the focus of attention on the relevant dimensions of a mental metaphor. In two experiments, participants made temporal or valence judgments (with their left or right hand) on verbs with a negative or positive meaning and conjugated in the past or future form, allowing for the simultaneous activation of the
In the simplest case of concept learning, one of the classes is referred to as positive (examples belonging to the concept) and the other as negative. For a classification problem with several class values, a set of rules is constructed for each class. When rules for class cj are constructed, examples of this class are referred to as positive, and examples from all the other classes as negative.. The covering algorithm works as follows. We first construct a rule that correctly classifies some examples. We then remove the positive examples covered by the rule from the training set and repeat the process until no more examples remain.. Within this outer loop, different approaches can be taken to find individual rules. One approach is to heur-istically search the space of possible rules top-down, that is, from general to specific (in terms of examples covered, this means from rules covering many to rules covering fewer examples). To construct a single rule that classifies examples into class ci, we ...
