Teaching coin summation to the mentally retarded. (1/805)

A procedure to teach four mild and moderately retarded persons to sum the value of coin combinations was tested. Subjects were first taught to count a single target coin, and then to sum that coin in combination with coins previously trained. Five American coins and various combinations were trained. Modelling, modelling with subject participation, and independent counting by the subject constituted the training sequence. The subjects improved from a mean pretest score of 29% to 92% correct at posttest. A four-week followup score showed a mean of 79% correct. A multiple-baseline design suggested that improvement in coin-counting performance occurred only after the coin was trained. The results indicate that this procedure has potential for teaching the retarded to sum combinations of coinds in 5 to 6 hr of instruction.  (+info)

Equivalence class establishment, expansion, and modification in preschool children. (2/805)

Preschool children were taught four two-choice match-to-sample conditional discriminations with 10 arbitrary visual stimuli. For 6 participants, 2 of the 10 stimuli served as the sample, or conditional, stimuli in all discriminations. For 5 additional participants, the same pair of stimuli served as the discriminative, or comparison, stimuli in all discriminations. Equivalence classes were established with more participants in the latter group, replicating prior research with participants with retardation. Four participants, in whom equivalence classes were established and who were available for further participation, were exposed to new conditional discriminations without trial-by-trial feedback and involving some novel and some familiar stimuli. Consistent conditional responding was observed, and tests for inclusion of the novel stimuli in the original classes showed class expansion. Training to reverse the unreinforced conditional performances produced a reversal of class membership in 3 of 4 participants, an outcome not consistent with other studies. The results are discussed with respect to the interaction of class structure and size.  (+info)

Associations between an asthma morbidity index and ideas of fright and bother in a community population. (3/805)

There is a need for simple asthma outcome measures for primary care which are not only valid in terms of their relationship with lung function but also in terms of pragmatic psychological constructs. This study assesses the usefulness of adding items on the degree of 'bother' and 'fright' caused by the condition to a previously validated simple asthma morbidity index. A postal questionnaire survey comprising a simple asthma morbidity index and questions on 'fright' and 'bother' was conducted in one general practice in the north-east of England. Responses were obtained from 570 individuals. Of these, 184 (32%) reported low, 133 (23%) medium and 253 (44%) high morbidity. Twenty-nine per cent of respondents had felt frightened by their asthma in the previous 4 weeks. Both the 'fright' and 'bother' items were significantly associated with the morbidity index. The addition of 'bother' and/or 'fright' questions may improve both the content, construct and predictive validity of the morbidity index, but this needs to be established prospectively.  (+info)

Origins of theory of mind, cognition and communication. (4/805)

There has been a revolution in our understanding of infant and toddler cognition that promises to have far-reaching implications for our understanding of communicative and linguistic development. Four empirical findings that helped to prompt this change in theory are analyzed: (a) Intermodal coordination--newborns operate with multimodal information, recognizing equivalences in information across sensory-modalities; (b) Imitation--newborns imitate the lip and tongue movements they see others perform; (c) Memory--young infants form long-lasting representations of perceived events and use these memories to generate motor productions after lengthy delays in novel contexts; (d) Theory of mind--by 18 months of age toddlers have adopted a theory of mind, reading below surface behavior to the goals and intentions in people's actions. This paper examines three views currently being offered in the literature to replace the classical framework of early cognitive development: modularity-nativism, connectionism, and theory-theory. Arguments are marshaled to support the "theory-theory" view. This view emphasizes a combination of innate structure and qualitative reorganization in children's thought based on input from the people and things in their culture. It is suggested that preverbal cognition forms a substrate for language acquisition and that analyzing cognition may enhance our understanding of certain disorders of communication.  (+info)

Category learning and perceptual categorization in schizophrenia. (5/805)

The aim of this study was to evaluate category learning in schizophrenia on tests of perceptual abstraction. Participants learned to categorize simple geometrical shapes. The categories were either well-defined (discrete categories, or DCs) or ill-defined (graded categories, or GCs). In DCs, the cues defining category membership can be verbalized in an all-or-none fashion, while in GCs they cannot be defined unambiguously. Three types of learning were used successively: serial presentation of category-exemplars, verbal description, and feedback. After the serial presentation, schizophrenia patients showed a deficit for GCs (p<0.005) but not for DCs (p = 0.98). After the verbal definition of GCs, the difference between schizophrenia patients and controls diminished (p = 0.09). Finally, after the feedback learning of GCs, a significant difference was observed again (p<0.0001), suggesting that schizophrenia patients were impaired in this learning paradigm. The GC-learning impairment after the serial presentation displayed a relationship with the score of the cognitive component assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (r = -0.66). In conclusion, these results suggest that the perceptual stage of abstraction is impaired in schizophrenia. This impairment can be partially compensated by instructions via top-down verbal processes.  (+info)

Second-order belief attribution in Williams syndrome: intact or impaired? (6/805)

Second-order mental state attribution in a group of children with Williams syndrome was investigated. The children were compared to age, IQ, and language-matched groups of children with Prader-Willi syndrome or nonspecific mental retardation. Participants were given two trials of a second-order reasoning task. No significant differences between the Williams syndrome and Prader-Willi or mentally retarded groups on any of the test questions were found. Results contrast with the view that individuals with Williams syndrome have an intact theory of mind and suggest that in their attributions of second-order mental states, children with Williams syndrome perform no better than do other groups of children with mental retardation.  (+info)

Analysis of activity preferences as a function of differential consequences. (7/805)

Individuals who do not possess the verbal skills to express meaningful choice in the absence of its consequences may have difficulty indicating their preference for protracted activities that are unavailable until some time in the future (e.g., taking a walk, riding a bike). When we examined the preferences of 4 individuals with developmental disabilities by showing them pictorial representations of various activities, their initial choices showed no clear preferences. In a subsequent condition, selecting a photograph resulted in brief access to the depicted activity. When selections produced differential consequences (i.e., access to the activity), clear preferences emerged. In addition, 3 individuals' preferences were later shifted to an initially less preferred but more socially desirable option by superimposing additional reinforcement contingencies for engaging in the less preferred activity. Results are discussed in terms of the conditions under which choice functions as an indicator of preference and how those conditions may be altered to improve the quality of choice making without limiting access to preferred options.  (+info)

The left hemisphere's role in hypothesis formation. (8/805)

In a probability guessing experiment, subjects try to guess which of two events will occur next. Humans tend to match the frequency of previous occurrences in their guesses. Animals other than humans tend to maximize or always choose the option that has occurred the most frequently in the past. Investigators have argued that frequency matching results from the attempt of humans to find patterns in sequences of events even when told the sequences are random. There is independent evidence that the left hemisphere of humans houses a cognitive mechanism that tries to make sense of past occurrences. We performed a probability guessing experiment with two split-brain patients and found that they approximated frequency matching in their left hemispheres and approached maximizing in their right hemispheres. We obtained a conceptual replication of that finding on patients with unilateral damage to either the left or right hemisphere. We conclude that the neural processes responsible for searching for patterns in events are housed in the left hemisphere.  (+info)

The research aims to examine the ideas that children and adolescents have about their own self-regulation and what aspects are important in order to resist food temptations. I have a box of Christmas decorations that has sat unopened for over ten years. I have another box filled with holiday CDs and some two dozen videos. Ill load up my iPod with hours of joyful, nostalgic music and listen while I exercise and take my daily walks. Every evening, and on the more inclement afternoons, Ill watch a holiday movie and get lost in the story. What I cant do is make a connection between what I knew and whats happening now.. The present study investigates the concept of SHAME from a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural perspective. This concept, overarching the field of negative self-eva-luative emotions, is operationalized through two lexical categories (shame and embarrassment) that are comparable in the languages under investigation. The usage of the adjectival exponents of these categories is analyzed in four communities of British English, American English, French and Polish. The study has two goals, one descriptive, the other methodological. Firstly, it aims to identify the conceptual structuring of the two lexical categories relative to their respective socio-cultural contexts. The result will be four sets of culture-sensitive usage profiles. Secondly, the study further advances corpus-driven quantitative methodology for the description of intersubjectively-grounded abstract concepts. The general term of proliferative GN can be used for mesangial proliferative which can be IgA predominant or could be a full house pattern with lupus nephritis.
