Effects of commercial air travel on patients with pulmonary hypertension air travel and pulmonary hypertension. (7/7)

BACKGROUND: Limited data are available on the effects of air travel in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH), despite their risk of physiologic compromise. We sought to quantify the incidence and severity of hypoxemia experienced by people with PH during commercial air travel. METHODS: We recruited 34 participants for a prospective observational study during which cabin pressure, oxygen saturation (Sp O 2 ), heart rate, and symptoms were documented serially at multiple predefined time points throughout commercial flights. Oxygen desaturation was defined as SpO2, <85%. RESULTS: Median flight duration was 3.6 h (range, 1.0-7.3 h). Mean +/- SD cabin pressure at cruising altitude was equivalent to the pressure 1,968 +/- 371 m (6,456 +/- 1,218 ft) above sea level (ASL)(maximum altitude 5 2,621 m [8,600 ft] ASL). Median change in Sp O 2 from sea level to cruising altitude was 2 4.9% (range, 2.0% to 2 15.8%). Nine subjects (26% [95% CI, 12%-38%]) experienced oxygen desaturation during flight (minimum Sp O 2 5 74%). Thirteen subjects (38%) reported symptoms during flight, of whom five also experienced desaturations. Oxygen desaturation was associated with cabin pressures equivalent to . 1,829 m (6,000 ft) ASL, ambulation, and flight duration(all P values , .05). CONCLUSIONS: Hypoxemia is common among people with PH traveling by air, occurring in one in four people studied. Hypoxemia was associated with lower cabin pressures, ambulation during flight, and longer flight duration. Patients with PH who will be traveling on flights of longer duration or who have a history of oxygen use, including nocturnal use only, should be evaluated for supplemental in-flight oxygen.  (+info)

An industrial gas turbine engine for electrical power production includes a high pressure spool and a low pressure spool in which the low pressure spool can be operated from full power mode to zero power mode when completely shut off, where the low pressure spool is operated at high electrical demand to supply compressed air to the high pressure compressor of the high pressure spool, and where turbine exhaust is used to drive a second electric generator from steam produced in a heat recovery steam generator. The high pressure spool includes a high pressure compressor with a inner compressed air flow path and an outer compressed air flow path in which a higher pressure supplies cooling to a turbine airfoil that is then discharged into a combustor of the engine.

I pump compressed air through my brew to agitate it and this does have a cooling effect but at 60 degrees less than before. I mixed the methoxide one quarter at a time into the brew mixing vigorously (compressed air) re-heated back to sixty degrees then repeated this process until all mixed together. I left the mix for one hour of compressed air agitation. Switched off and went home. Next day a perfect separation and amazingly low viscocity and Apple cider colour and beautiful glycerin at the bottom. Its presently sat in oak awaiting filtering...............I think I have cracked the method using effectively home made equipment. I agree there are many pitfalls but to me the temp was the main issue also the agitation method and patently titration is mega-important. If there is lots of white scummy soap at the top.....yes I have had that on batch two. Coherence properties of the photon pair generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion pumped by a multi-mode cw diode laser are studied with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Each photon of the pair enters a different input port of the interferometer and the biphoton coherence properties are studied with a two-photon detector placed at one output port. When the photon pair simultaneously enters the interferometer, periodic recurrence of the biphoton de Broglie wave packet is observed, closely resembling the coherence properties of the pump diode laser. With non-zero delays between the photons at the input ports, biphoton interference exhibits the same periodic recurrence but the wave packet shapes are shown to be dependent on both the input delay as well as the interferometer delay. We present our work on the implementation and calibration of a multisensor measuring system. The work is part of a large scale research project on optical measurement using sensor actuator coupling and active exploration. This project is a collaboration of researchers form seven institutes of the University of Stuttgart including photogrammetry, mechanical engineering and computer science. The system consist of optical sensors which can be manipulated in position and orientation by robot actuators, and light sources which control illumination. The system performs different tasks including object recognition, localization and gauging. Flexibility is achieved by replacing the common serial measurement chain by nested control loops involving autonomous agents which perform basic tasks in a modular fashion. In this study, an experimental and kinetic modeling investigation of propanal, n-butanal and n-pentanal pyrolysis and oxidation in two shock tube facilities was carried out. Blast-induced tinnitus, along with associated auditory impairment and traumatic brain injury, is a primary concern facing military service members. To search for treatment, we investigated the therapeutic effects of sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, given its vasodilatory effects and evidence suggesting its beneficial effects on noise-induced hearing loss. Rats were subjected to three consecutive blast exposures at 22 psi and were monitored for tinnitus using a gap-detection acoustic startle reflex paradigm. Hearing thresholds and detection were tested using auditory brainstem responses and prepulse inhibition, respectively. Blasted rats were either treated with sildenafil or tap water following blast exposure, while age-matched sham control rats were treated with sildenafil and no blast exposure. Our results showed that sildenafil did not effectively prevent acute tinnitus onset and hearing impairment. Instead, sildenafil significantly suppressed high-frequency tinnitus from 3 to 6 weeks
