Integration, acceptance testing, and clinical operation of the Medical Information, Communication and Archive System, phase II. (1/21)

The Medical Information, Communication and Archive System (MICAS) is a multivendor incremental approach to picture archiving and communications system (PACS). It is a multimodality integrated image management system that is seamlessly integrated with the radiology information system (RIS). Phase II enhancements of MICAS include a permanent archive, automated workflow, study caches, Microsoft (Redmond, WA) Windows NT diagnostic workstations with all components adhering to Digital Information Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standards. MICAS is designed as an enterprise-wide PACS to provide images and reports throughout the Strong Health healthcare network. Phase II includes the addition of a Cemax-Icon (Fremont, CA) archive, PACS broker (Mitra, Waterloo, Canada), an interface (IDX PACSlink, Burlington, VT) to the RIS (IDXrad) plus the conversion of the UNIX-based redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID) 5 temporary archives in phase I to NT-based RAID 0 DICOM modality-specific study caches (ImageLabs, Bedford, MA). The phase I acquisition engines and workflow management software was uninstalled and the Cemax archive manager (AM) assumed these functions. The existing ImageLabs UNIX-based viewing software was enhanced and converted to an NT-based DICOM viewer. Installation of phase II hardware and software and integration with existing components began in July 1998. Phase II of MICAS demonstrates that a multivendor open-system incremental approach to PACS is feasible, cost-effective, and has significant advantages over a single-vendor implementation.  (+info)

Does the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale favor left hemisphere strokes? NINDS t-PA Stroke Study Group. (2/21)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) is a valid, reproducible scale that measures neurological deficit. Of 42 possible points, 7 points are directly related to measurement of language compared with only 2 points related to neglect. METHODS: We examined the placebo arm of the NINDS t-PA stroke trial to test the hypothesis that the total volume of cerebral infarction in patients with right hemisphere strokes would be greater than the volume of cerebral infarction in patients with left hemisphere strokes who have similar NIHSS scores. The volume of stroke was determined by computerized image analysis of CT films and CT images stored on computer tape and optical disks. Cube-root transformation of lesion volume was performed for each CT. Transformed lesion volume was analyzed in a logistic regression model to predict volume of stroke by NIHSS score for each hemisphere. Spearman rank correlation was used to determine the relation between the NIHSS score and lesion volume. RESULTS: The volume for right hemisphere stroke was statistically greater than the volume for left hemisphere strokes, adjusting for the baseline NIHSS (P<0. 001). For each 5-point category of the NIHSS score <20, the median volume of right hemisphere strokes was approximately double the median volume of left hemisphere strokes. For example, for patients with a left hemisphere stroke and a 24-hour NIHSS score of 16 to 20, the median volume of cerebral infarction was 48 mL (interquartile range 14 to 111 mL) as compared with 133 mL (interquartile range 81 to 208 mL) for patients with a right hemisphere stroke (P<0.001). The median volume of a right hemisphere stroke was roughly equal to the median volume of a left hemisphere stroke in the next highest 5-point category of the NIHSS. The Spearman rank correlation between the 24-hour NIHSS score and 3-month lesion volume was 0.72 for patients with left hemisphere stroke and 0.71 for patients with right hemisphere stroke. CONCLUSIONS: For a given NIHSS score, the median volume of right hemisphere strokes is consistently larger than the median volume of left hemisphere strokes. The clinical implications of our finding need further exploration.  (+info)

Distance communication transfer of HIV prevention interventions to service providers. (3/21)

Most acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) service providers are in countries with little access to scientific developments relevant to their programs. It is critical to transfer advances from the scientific arena to service providers on a global scale. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention organizations in 78 countries were randomized to receive either a control condition or a technology transfer condition with an interactive distance learning computer training curriculum and individualized distance consultation. Of 42 nongovernmental organizations in the technology transfer condition, 29 adopted the science-based program in their communities or trained other agencies to also use it. Advanced communication technologies can create a cost-effective infrastructure to disseminate new intervention models to service providers worldwide.  (+info)

Integrating RIS/PACS: the web-based solution at University Hospital of Ribeirao Preto, Brazil. (4/21)

Integration of a Radiology Information System (RIS) and a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) reduces the risk of inconsistent data by reducing interfaces among databases that contain largely redundant information. Furthermore, RIS/PACS integration is the basis for a filmless radiology facility. Web technology is based on international standards and supplies the main features for the RIS/PACS integration task based on a client/server model. This article presents a web-based system developed to manage and distribute images and diagnostic information within the University Hospital of Ribeirao Preto (HCRP) at the University of Sao Paulo.  (+info)

Security of patient and study data associated with DICOM images when transferred using compact disc media. (5/21)

The transmission of patient and imaging data between imaging centers and other interested individuals is increasingly achieved by means of compact disc digital media (CD). These CDs typically contain, in addition to the patient images, a DICOM reader and information about the origin of the data. While equipment manufacturers attach disclaimers to these discs and specify the intended use of such media, they are often the only practical means of transmitting data for small medical, dental, or veterinary medical centers. Images transmitted by these means are used for clinical diagnosis. This has lead to a heavy reliance on the integrity of the data. This report describes attempts to alter significant patient and study data on CD media and their outcome. The results show that data files are extremely vulnerable to alteration, and alterations are not detectable without detailed analysis of file structure. No alterations to the DICOM readers were required to achieve this; changes were applied only to the data files. CDs with altered data can be readily prepared, and from the point of view of individuals viewing the images, function identically to the original manufacturer's CD. Such media should be considered unsafe where there is a potential for financial or other gain to be had from altering the data, and the copy cannot be cross-checked with the original data.  (+info)

Disseminating cardiopulmonary resuscitation training by distributing 35,000 personal manikins among school children. (6/21)

BACKGROUND: Because most cardiac arrests occur at home, widespread training is needed to increase the incidence of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by lay persons. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of mass distribution of CPR instructional materials among schoolchildren. METHODS AND RESULTS: We distributed 35,002 resuscitation manikins to pupils (12 to 14 years of age) at 806 primary schools. Using the enclosed 24-minute instructional DVD, they trained in CPR and subsequently used the kit to train family and friends (second tier). They completed a questionnaire on who had trained in CPR using the kit. Teachers also were asked to evaluate the project. The incidence of bystander CPR in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the months following the project was compared with the previous year. In total, 6947 questionnaires (19.8%) were returned. The 6947 kits had been used to train 17,140 from the second tier (mean, 2.5 persons per pupil; 95% confidence interval, 2.4 to 2.5). The teachers had used a mean of 64 minutes (95% confidence interval, 60 to 68) for preparation and a mean of 13 minutes (95% confidence interval, 11 to 15) to tidy up. Incidence of bystander CPR in the months after the project did not increase significantly compared with the previous year (25.0% versus 27.9%; P=0.16). CONCLUSIONS: CPR training can be disseminated in a population by distributing personal resuscitation manikins among children in primary schools. The teachers felt able to easily facilitate CPR training. The incidence of bystander CPR did not increase significantly in the months following the project.  (+info)

Carcinogenicity evaluations and ongoing studies: the IARC databases. (7/21)

Many thousands of chemicals are produced industrially and many more occur naturally. Information on the toxicology of these chemicals is often minimal or absent. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has published evaluations of the carcinogenic risk to humans of over 700 chemicals, groups of chemicals, and complex mixtures as a regular series of monographs. A database has been created containing summaries of all the relevant epidemiological, animal carcinogenicity, and other relevant biological data for each chemical or mixture evaluated. Additional databases have been created for ongoing epidemiological studies of cancer in humans and for long-term carcinogenicity studies in rodents, as well as a database containing information on genotoxic and related effects of chemicals. Some of these databases have been published in print form. IARC now plans to publish them electronically, together with other databases, in the form of a CDROM (compact disk, read-only memory). The objective will be to make the entire IARC database of cancer information as widely available as possible in an integrated format conducive to efficient and combined exploitation of all the component databases.  (+info)

A holder for temporarily storing and displaying compact discs has a front, a back and a disc-receiving base sloping downward from the back to the front. The disc-receiving base has molded pockets or slots for receiving and vertically supporting the compact discs. Each pocket has a lead-in for quick drop-off of a disc and for guiding it to a trough at the bottom. The trough contacts the flat sides of the disc but does not touch the information containing regions on the programmed side. Three bumps extend inward from the walls of the trough for orienting the disc at a rearward leaning angle to enhance visual identification and to prevent the discs from tilting forward and becoming dislodged. Effective disc orientation is achieved by providing a straight slot, with no bumps, that is molded at the desired angle of disc tilt or inclination. The pockets have openings that are wider than the thicknesses of standard compact discs. The pockets are arranged in staggered rows to offset the discs and to allow for

Camera calibration plays a critical role in 3D computer vision tasks. The most commonly used calibration method utilizes a planar checkerboard and can be done nearly fully automatically. However, it requires the user to move either the camera or the checkerboard during the capture step. This manual operation is time consuming and makes the calibration results unstable. In order to solve the above problems caused by manual operation, this paper presents a full-automatic camera calibration method using a virtual pattern instead of a physical one. The virtual pattern is actively transformed and displayed on a screen so that the control points of the pattern can be uniformly observed in the camera view. The proposed method estimates the camera parameters from point correspondences between 2D image points and the virtual pattern. The camera and the screen are fixed during the whole process; therefore, the proposed method does not require any manual operations. Performance of the proposed method is evaluated
Camera calibration is one of the fundamental photogrammetric tasks. The standard procedure is to apply an iterative adjustment to measurements of known control points. The iterative adjustment needs initial values of internal and external parameters. In this paper we investigate a procedure where only one parameter - the focal length is given a specific initial value. The procedure is validated using the freely available Damped Bundle Adjustment Toolbox on five calibration data sets using varying narrow- and wide-angle lenses. The results show that the Gauss-Newton-Armijo and Levenberg-Marquardt-Powell bundle adjustment methods implemented in the toolbox converge even if the initial values of the focal length are between 1/2 and 32 times the true focal length, even if the parameters are highly correlated. Standard statistical analysis methods in the toolbox enable manual selection of the lens distortion parameters to estimate, something not available in other camera calibration toolboxes. A ...

Flame chemiluminescence tomography (FCT), which combines computerized tomography theory and multidirectional chemiluminescence emission measurements, can realize instantaneous three-dimensional (3-D) diagnostics for flames with high spatial and temporal resolutions. One critical step of FCT is to record the projections by multiple cameras from different view angles. For high accuracy reconstructions, it requires that extrinsic parameters (the positions and orientations) and intrinsic parameters (especially the image distances) of cameras be accurately calibrated first. Taking the focus effect of the camera into account, a modified camera calibration method was presented for FCT, and a 3-D calibration pattern was designed to solve the parameters. The precision of the method was evaluated by reprojections of feature points to cameras with the calibration results. The maximum root mean square error of the feature points position is 1.42 pixels and 0.0064 mm for the image distance. An FCT system ...

Based on a new scientifically-engineered approach, we conjecture that adequate quantities of specific classes of nutrients (chemical agents) to accompany cholesterol intensive meals disentangles precipitation, hinders blockade, and effectively reduces buildup of plaques on inner arterial walls. Specific chemical agents lead to formation of low-frequency vibrating boundary layers at the arterial walls. The axes of these differential vibrations are positioned orthogonal to the arterial walls. Once vibrations reach resonance at the quantum level, they obstruct plaques precipitation and clinging at the cellular level by resonance bioportation magnificative channeling between the two levels. The resonance creates the physical equivalence of perturbative "slip-zone" on the inner arterial walls. Additionally, arterial resonance in specific modes, can act as a mechanical harmonic hammer that could also destabilize excessive clotting (thrombosis). In this paper, we develop and state below the theoretical ...

Winner of the CRIME WRITERS ASSOCIATION DEBUT DAGGER AWARD and the AGATHA AND DILYS AWARD - "A wickedly clever story, a dead-true and original voice" - Laurie R. King It is the summer of 1950-and at the once-grand mansion of Buckshaw, young Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison, is intrigued by a series of inexplicable events: A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Then, hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath. For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. "I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasnt. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life ...

In 1995 the ST-ECF introduced, along with the CADC, the re-calibration on-the-fly (OTF) of archived HST exposures. By making use of the best current calibration software and reference files, OTF guarantees that archive users always retrieve from ST-ECF and CADC archives the current best products (i.e., calibrated data). Pushing the concept further, ST-ECF and CADC are working in the direction of providing the astronomers with an active archive system, able to relieve the astronomers of time consuming and boring tasks, therefore increasing the productivity of archive researchers. In this framework the ST-ECF embarked upon a project aimed at building associations of WFPC2 exposures, recovering the otherwise lost information of which observation strategy (e.g., CR-SPLIT, dithering) a WFPC2 proposer decided to employ. When looking at an association the archive users immediately see what the shifts between all the exposures were without having to compute them manually. Upon request the archive system ...

CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles, Pradeep Teregowda): We propose a flexible new technique to easily calibrate a camera. It only requires the camera to observe a planar pattern shown at a few (at least two) different orientations. Either the camera or the planar pattern can be freely moved. The motion need not be known. Radial lens distortion is modeled. The proposed procedure consists of a closed-form solution, followed by a nonlinear refinement based on the maximum likelihood criterion. Both computer simulation and real data have been used to test the proposed technique, and very good results have been obtained. Compared with classical techniques which use expensive equipment such as two or three orthogonal planes, the proposed technique is easy to use and flexible. It advances 3D computer vision one step from laboratory environments to real world use. The corresponding software is available from the authors Web page.
An imaging device is calibrated using a flat, featureless surface and uniform illumination, relying on the effect of off-axis illumination and vignetting on the reduction of light into the camera at off-axis angles. The effect of the tilt of the camera is also considered. These effects are used to extract intrinsic camera parameters including focal length, principal point, aspect ratio and skew.
Camera calibration is one of the most basic and important processes in optical measuring field. Generally, the objective of camera calibration is to estimate the internal and external parameters of object cameras, while the orientation error of optical axis is not included yet. Orientation error of optical axis is a important factor, which seriously affects measuring precision in high-precision measurement field, especially for those distant aerospace measurement in which object distance is much longer than focal length, that lead to magnifying the orientation errors to thousands times. In order to eliminate the influence of orientation error of camera optical axis, the imaging model of camera is analysed and established in this paper, and the calibration method is also introduced: Firstly, we analyse the reasons that cause optical axis error and its influence. Then, we find the model of optical axis orientation error and imaging model of camera basing on its practical physical meaning. ...

One of the reasons that I originally became so obsessed with photography was my attraction to colour. I grew up spending my summers in Ibiza, which if youve ever been to, youll know that the island is the epitome of "colourful." Everywhere you look there is bursting colour; bright orange soil, deep green olive trees, turquoise sky and sea. Add to that the colourful array of fashion that people who live or spend time on the island wear, and youve got a feast for the eyes.. Im originally from Switzerland, which isnt actually known for being very colourful at all. I think its the stark contrast between the two places that got me so excited about capturing bright colour in my images.. From the moment I had a camera in my hand, Ive hardly ever shot in black and white. An image comes to life for me far more when there is colour involved. When people ask me why, I truly do believe that my attraction to colour is so deep rooted in my upbringing. In a strange way, maybe I felt quite starved of ...

1 ABSTRACT Currently, digital audio source such as a compact disk (CD) and a digital audio tape (DAT) has come to be mounted in cars to complement the sophisticated audio system . To mount these new functions in the limit set space, however, the conventional source such as the FM/AM tuner must be built more compact and lightweight. On the other hand, to view the FM/AM tuner perspective from the standpoints of set design and manufacture, there are various problems such as given below. Set variations are flung from those for the U.S.A. and Europe to those for Japan. It is difficult, if not impossible, to design the set designer for each of these set variations because of the limited designer availability. Also, amid the tendency for world production base to be spread and increasingly numerous, high quality level is of the utmost importance for audio sets no matter where are manufactured. In the age of globalization English as a lingua franca is crucial to many areas of professional and private life, including teaching and learning in higher education, science and research, language pedagogy, business, and tourism. ELF research over the last 15 years or so has studied communication via ELF in all these domains, and has shown that countless ELF speakers across the world not only use this means of communication for a vast number of different purposes, but also shape it in the process. This research has also brought about new theoretical developments as it has necessitated a quite radical rethinking of deeply entrenched ideas and attitudes concerning the notions of community, competence, effective communication and language use and language learning.. What has, however, only been given fairly scarce attention so far are the kinds of translingual, intercultural interaction where the power differential between the communicating parties is very great, and where the outcomes of ...

Morris and his group continue to refine mathematical and statistical aspects of their techniques for extracting transient neurotransmitter fluctuations induced by drugs or behaviors from dynamic PET data. The end-product of these modeling/image processing techniques are minute-by-minute movies of neurotransmitter release in the brain. Recent papers by Morris et al., (Neuroimage 2010) and Normandin et al (Neuroimage 2012) and Sullivan et al (AJNMMI 2013) and Kim et al (Hum Brain Map 2014) demonstrate the work. The culmination of these theoretical developments resulted in a paper by Cosgrove et al (J Neurosci 2014) showing differences in brain responses of male and female smokers while smoking.. Current projects include a. relating occupancy of neuroreceptors by medications to medication ...
The ultimate goal of our research is to probe cellular structure of living biological tissues using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). For us, the most promising probes of tissue microstructure are diffusion and transverse relaxation. Our work includes a big portion of theoretical development towards understanding how features of cellular structure and function are reflected in the MRI signal. This research spans the range between physics-type experiments with artificial samples to real clinical measurements.. We also respond to the challenge of the ill-posed inverse problem of finding relevant microstructural features if living tissues given measured data. Our group possesses the necessary expertise in advanced data processing. We also focus on MR methods that could elucidate microstructural specifics. Measurement techniques developed in our group are tailored in agreement with theory to provide tractable experimental data.. In practical implementation, we develop global fiber tracking that ...
The research project SYN-TES aims at contributing to a theoretical development transforming the field of colour and light into a coherent field of research. This includes the identification of important problems and the development of theoretical and methodological tools for the trans-disciplinary understanding necessary to solving them. Special emphasis is put on the spatial interaction of colour and light in architecture.. The work has the form of seminars /workshops where colour and light specialists from different academic disciplines (six Nordic universities) and companies (light sources, paint, colorimetric standards, window glass) examine different aspects of the problem complex. Sub-projects deal with the epistemology and concepts of colour and light, with methods for analysing colour and light in existing architectural spaces and with the relationship between energy efficiency and light quality.. ...
The premise of Larrys poll, it seems, is that the MS is NOT a theory, but a school of thought, i.e., MS ::= collective beliefs of the cohesive and mutually self-congratulatory group of people who identify with the MS tradition-- all the folks who look to Mayr, Dobzhansky, Fisher, Darwin etc as their intellectual forebears. A more succinct definition given to me by a famous evolutionist is that neo-Darwinism means whatever we say it means. A theory has a logical structure, but a school of thought can hold any beliefs, including ones that it rejected previously. For instance, Allen Orr is obviously considered part of this school, yet his publications and his theoretical developments invoke a lucky mutation view rejected by Mayr, et al and understood to be anti-Darwinian. Orr and Coyne helped to bring down the micromutationist view that previous Darwinians saw as an integral part of Darwins legacy, but now Coyne is famous as a reactionary defender of Darwinism ...

Downloadable! Two of the anomalies of the exponentially discounted utility model are the magnitude effect (larger magnitudes are discounted less) and the sign effect (a loss is discounted less than a gain of the same magnitude). The literature has followed Loewenstein and Prelec (1992) in attributing the magnitude effect to the increasing elasticity of the value function and the sign effect to a higher elasticity for losses as compared to gains. We provide a simple, tractable, functional form that has these two properties, which we call the simple increasing elasticity value function (SIE). These functional forms underpin the main explanation of the magnitude and sign effects and may aid applications and further theoretical development.
Over the last 25 years, a life-course perspective on criminal behavior has assumed increasing prominence in the literature. This theoretical development has been accompanied by changes in the statistical models used to analyze criminological data. There are two main statistical modeling techniques currently used to model longitudinal data. These are growth curve models and latent class growth models, also known as group-based trajectory models. Using the well known Cambridge data and the Philadelphia cohort study, this article compares the two
Recent theoretical developments had laid down the proper mathematical means to understand how the structural complexity of search patterns may improve foraging efficiency. Under information-deprived scenarios and specific landscape configurations, Lévy walks and flights are known to lead to high search efficiencies. Based on a one-dimensional comparative analysis we show a mechanism by which, at random, a searcher can optimize the encounter with close and distant targets. The mechanism consists of combining an optimal diffusivity (optimally enhanced diffusion) with a minimal diffusion constant. In such a way the search dynamics adequately balances the tension between finding close and distant targets, while, at the same time, shifts the optimal balance towards relatively larger close-to-distant target encounter ratios. We find that introducing a multiscale set of reorientations ensures both a thorough local space exploration without oversampling and a fast spreading dynamics at the large scale. Lévy
