Assays to detect West Nile virus in dead birds. (1/3)

Using oral swab samples to detect West Nile virus in dead birds, we compared the Rapid Analyte Measurement Platform (RAMP) assay with VecTest and real-time reverse-transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. The sensitivities of RAMP and VecTest for testing corvid species were 91.0% and 82.1%, respectively.  (+info)

Identification of potentially human-pathogenic Enterocytozoon bieneusi genotypes in various birds. (2/3)

Enterocytozoon bieneusi was detected in 24 of 83 samples from birds of the orders Columbiformes, Passeriformes, and Psittaciformes. It was identical to or closely related to the Peru6 genotype, which was previously found in humans in Peru. Thus, various birds can be a significant source of environmental contamination by potentially human-pathogenic E. bieneusi.  (+info)

The emergence and spread of finch trichomonosis in the British Isles. (3/3)

 (+info)

Our surveillance and PME data identified annually recurring seasonal (late summer) epidemic mortality of passerines (predominantly greenfinches and chaffinches) in Britain due to finch trichomonosis since this was first observed in 2006 [12]. By using independent datasets, we identified substantial declines not only in the number of gardens that greenfinches visit (GBW data) but also in the number of individual greenfinches visiting each garden (GBFS data), declines that carry through into the wider breeding population (BBS/CBS data). Large numbers of dead finches were found in a high proportion of the finch trichomonosis incidents. Because we would predict considerable under-reporting of passerine carcasses due to their small body size [23,24], these data indicate large-scale site mortality; consequently, attributing the observed BBS/CBS greenfinch declines to epidemic mortality seems entirely plausible.. While mortality continued to occur in the chaffinch population beyond that reported in ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Nuclear and mitochondrial genes contain similar phylogenetic signal for pigeons and doves (Aves. T2 - Columbiformes). AU - Johnson, Kevin P.. AU - Clayton, Dale H.. PY - 2000/1. Y1 - 2000/1. N2 - Molecular systematic studies generally assume that gene trees are reasonable estimates of species trees. We tested the validity of this assumption in the pigeons and doves (Aves: Columbiformes) by comparing phylogenies derived from nuclear (β-fibrinogen intron 7) and mitochondrial (cytochrome b) genes. Trees derived from the two genes when analyzed separately contained many nodes in common. A partition homogeneity test revealed no significant incongruence between trees derived from the two genes; so, we combined nuclear and mitochondrial data in subsequent phylogenetic analyses. The resulting tree, which was highly resolved and generally well supported, contained a strong biogeographic component. The rate of nucleotide substitution for the nuclear intron was approximately six times ...

Ive read recently that Dawn dishsoap can be used to kill fleas. This product is used by rescuers to remove oil from various birds and sea life.. I have to find the instructions, but I believe that for cats, a small amount in warm water would work to bathe cats in. Then let it stay on a few minutes before rinsing off.. I havent tried it yet, and dont look forward to bathing my cat. But I was thinking about applying a solution around her neck, where she cant lick it, then rinsing.. Ive heard from several people that using food grade diatomatious earth has worked well. Follow directions, and dont inhale powder. At little on the cats bedding and other favorite spots kills fleas.. Since our weather has turned cold and rainy, my cat doesnt seem to have fleas. I never want to use any spot on products again, even if recommended by vets. They also recommend Hills Prescription foods, and one look at the label will tell you it has the same ingredients of the cheapest pet food, at a much higher ...

Detailed early plan of Haarlem. The translation of the title cartouche is as follows: Harlemum, or, as Hadrianus Barlandus writes, Herlemum, a renowned Dutch city, founded by an illustrious man who had the German name Lem; the city was therefore called Herr-Lems-Stadt in German. We say Harlemum in Latin, with the same meaning. Here there is a great market square, beautiful houses, an admirable church. The city is a charming location. Immediately after leaving the walls behind one, one enters a grove where various bird songs can be heard, and where there live timid deer, fleeing stags, hares, rabbits, in short all manner of wild animal. The translation of the text on the verso is as follows: The art of book printing is said to have been invented in Haarlem, as attested by various sources. But the first inventor of this art died before he had assembled all the things he needed for printing. His servant then travelled to Mainz and there began to practise the newly invented art

Do you have a problem with pigeons?. Some people call pigeons rodents with wings and the reason for this is that they can not only make a big mess of your property, they can also spread germs and diseases.. Pigeons can carry many diseases, such as Cryptococcal Meningitis, Salmonella, Listeria, Viral Encephalitis and E. Coli. When pigeon droppings dry up, they become like a dust substance that can easily be inhaled in the air, creating a high chance of spreading diseases.. This Pigeon Repeller app plays the sounds of various birds of prey that pigeons are extremely scared of. Just play it nearby any pigeons and watch as they scatter and not return for quite some time!. This app works offline and a blast of around 2 minutes should scare the pigeons away for at least an hour, however, if they come back, play the app for a while longer, until they scatter and for a couple of minutes afterwards.. This app will not cure your pigeon problems in the long term. You should make sure your property is ...
Individuals should aim to adjust their parental behaviours in order to maximize the success of their offspring but minimize associated costs. Plasticity in parental care is well documented from various bird, mammal and fish species, whereas amphibians were traditionally assumed as being highly instinct-bound. Therefore, little is known about higher cognitive abilities of amphibians, such as strategic planning and behavioural flexibility. Dendrobatid frogs have evolved a remarkable diversity of parental behaviours. The most noticeable of these behaviours is tadpole transport, which is obligatory in almost all species. Nonetheless, there is limited knowledge about spatial and temporal patterns of tadpole transport and the possible existence of behavioural plasticity on the individual level. In this study, we investigated correlates of tadpole transport behaviour in a natural population of the dendrobatid frog Allobates femoralis during five years. Tadpole transport was predominantly observed during
GASTROINTESTINAL DISEASES OF BIRDS. James K Morrisey, DVM, DABVP (Avian). Diseases of the Oral Cavity. The oropharynx is a common site for a variety of lesions in birds. A thorough examination of the oral cavity is usually not possible in the awake parrot, however, a quick visual examination can be performed and the pet sedated if lesions are noted. Other species such as raptors, passerines, and columbiformes are more easily examined while awake. Clinical signs associated with oropharyngeal diseases vary, but may include halitosis, anorexia, inappetance, dysphagia, rubbing of the beak, or gaping.. Plaques or granulomas are a clinical sign common with several diseases including bacterial infections, yeast infections, hypovitaminosis A, parasitic diseases, and viral diseases. Cytology and culture of the lesion will help to determine the cause. Cytological samples may be collected by rubbing a sterile cotton-tipped applicator along the lesion and then rubbing the sample on a clean slide. Several ...

Backyard chickens can be infected because they may have contact with a wild bird. If you have chickens, keep an eye out for any of the symptoms and report it to public health.. A recent outbreak of bird flu in the United States has spread across 19 states and affected more than 30 million birds. California is one of the 19 states and has had two confirmed commercial poultry flocks infected with flu this year. In January, a turkey flock was found to be infected in Stanislaus County, and in February, a flock of chickens was infected in Kings County. The two outbreaks combined to involve more than 100,000 infected birds.. Dean Blumberg, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis Childrens Hospital, explains what bird flu is, how its spread and whether Californians are at risk.. What is bird flu?. Bird flu is the common name for avian influenza. The avian influenza virus is related to human influenza, but it primarily affects various bird species.. How is it spread?. In some ways, its ...
Isolations of genotype IX (gIX) Avian Paramyxovirus Type 1 (APMV-1) from various bird species have been more common recently, with isolates showing variable pathogenicity in different species of poultry. Here we sequenced the genome of a Muscovy duck origin gIX virus strain XBT14, and characterized the virulence and pathogenicity of this isolate in chickens and ducks. The genome sequence of strain XBT14 is 15192 nt in length, containing multiple basic amino acids at the cleavage site of fusion protein. The strain XBT14 shared 91.6% to 91.9% nucleotide identities with early-genotype viruses (such as genotype III and IV), while shared 85.3% to 85.9% nucleotide homologies to later genotype viruses (such as genotype VII). Pathogenicity tests showed that strain XBT14 could cause death in different duck breeds with mortality rate of 44.4% in Muscovy duck, of 25.9% in Sheldrake, and 11.1% in Cherry Valley duck, respectively. Similar mortality discrepancies were also observed in different ducks when ...
Here Durrell has his own zoo established, but is working on a tight budget so he outlines how it was set it up as a Trust to get people interested in wildlife conservation to help support the zoo. The book describes their work at the zoo with various wild animals- how they were cared for, dealing with illness and injury, their excitement and feeling of success when some of their animals bred for the first time in captivity: the rare white-eared pheasant, the tapir, Geralda baboon, a chimpanzee, a lioness that had problems giving birth, serval cats and civets. Most of the book though, is about his trips to foreign countries to collect new animals for the zoo. On one trip they had extra complications caused by taking along a film crew, hoping to educate the public about their work via a television program. The most memorable trip was one to Sierra Leone where they acquired leopards, various birds and other animals but the focus was on two types of colobus monkey- beautiful creatures with long ...

Finch trichomonosis, caused by Trichomonas gallinae, emerged in the Canadian Maritime provinces in 2007 and has since caused ongoing mortality in regional purple finch (Carpodacus purpureus) and American goldfinch (Carduelis tristis) populations. Trichomonas gallinae was isolated from (1) finches and rock pigeons (Columbia livia) submitted for post-mortem or live-captured at bird feeding sites experiencing trichomonosis mortality; (2) bird seed at these same sites; and (3) rock pigeons live-captured at known roosts or humanely killed. Isolates were characterized using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and iron hydrogenase (Fe-hyd) gene sequences. Two distinct ITS types were found. Type A was identical to the UK finch epidemic strain and was isolated from finches and a rock pigeon with trichomonosis; apparently healthy rock pigeons and finches; and bird seed at an outbreak site. Type B was obtained from apparently healthy rock pigeons. Fe-hyd sequencing revealed six distinct subtypes. The ...

After you have reported a dead bird, you will be contacted to determine the condition of the bird and if it is suitable to be picked up for West Nile virus testing. All dead bird reports are used for surveillance purposes and are extremely valuable to us even if the bird is not submitted for testing.. If you have not been contacted within 24 hours of your report, you may safely dispose of the dead bird in your trash.. Although there is no evidence that West Nile virus can be acquired by handling dead birds, it is best not to handle the dead bird with your bare hands. Use gloves, a shovel, or a plastic bag to place the bird in a trash bag for disposal.. Please DO NOT freeze dead birds.. Burns Bog is an ombrotrophic peat bog located in Delta, British Columbia, Canada. It is the largest raised peat bog and the largest undeveloped urban land mass on the West Coast of the Americas. Burns Bog was originally 10,000-12,000 acres (4,000-4,900 ha) before development. Currently, only 3,500 hectares (8,600 acres) remain of the bog. Burns Bog is habitat to more than 300 plant and animal species, and 175 bird species. Some of these animals are listed as endangered (i.e. red-listed) or vulnerable (i.e. blue-listed) under the BC Provincial Government Species at-risk designations. The bog is also a major migratory stopover for various bird species on the Pacific Flyway. Burns Bog regulates water as well. The bog prevents flooding, maintains cool water temperatures in nearby rivers, holds water, and releases water in dry conditions. Burns Bog is an estuarine bog since it is situated at the mouth of the Fraser River and next to the Pacific Ocean. It is the only estuarine raised peat bog formed ...

Crested Pigeons tend to breed any time of the year but mostly spring and summer. Their nest is normally in a platform of twigs located in a tree or a bush.. First the male begins his courtship dance by bobbing his head up and down and proceeds as it spreads and raises his tail and half expands its wings. Advertising a low coo he continues next to display his iridescent green feathers, tilting them to shimmer in the sunlight. Once a female is attracted, the male then proceeds to throw the female out of the nest until she returns enough times for the male to finally accept her. At the sign of acceptance, the female hops around dancing, this is a sign that the two are united. At this point, they begin to excessively caress each other in time spans of a half an hour at a time. From this point on, no other pigeon is allowed near the nest. This courtship display is a biological isolation mechanism indicating mating only between the same species. Once the female recognizes the male of the species there ...

An enormous pigeon of the southern lowland rainforests. Erect, mohicanlike crest is especially long at the back. Blue-gray body with maroon on shoulder and chest, up to the throat. Very large white patch can reach the edge of the wing. Has a deep-bellied appearance and twitches the tail nervously. Forages in small groups on the forest floor. Unmistakable and does not overlap with other crowned-pigeons. Call, loud 2-note booming, sounding like a beating heart.

Im claiming that youre not willing to put in the effort to get the answers. You counter that Im being priestly. You are wrong. Your premise is that economics is sufficiently unlike physics so that a layman is qualified to dismiss economics off hand if he can come up with a contradiction. Thats wrong.. Obligatory Physics Example. Any student of elementary kinematics knows the answer to the trick question: which object has more friction with the floor? A 1 kg cube with dimensions of 10 cm per side, or a 1 kg rectangular prism with base dimensions of 5 cm by 5 cm. The intuitive response is that the cube, having more in contact with the floor, has more friction. The correct answer, however, is that both objects have the same amount of friction, which is determined by mass times force of gravity times coefficient of friction. In fact, this principle is so widespread it borders on being common knowledge.. I, Joe Gearhead, notice one day that if this were true, then car tires should be made thinner ...
