Surgical treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis whereby the lung is totally or partially, temporarily or permanently, immobilized. The procedure was based on the popular concept that collapsing the affected portion of a tuberculous lung allowed the infected area to rest and thereby recover. At the beginning of the 20th century artificially induced pneumothorax (PNEUMOTHORAX, ARTIFICIAL) was popular. Later a variety of other techniques was used to encourage collapse of the infected portion of the lung: unilateral phrenic nerve division, PNEUMONOLYSIS, pneumoperitoneum (PNEUMOPERITONEUM, ARTIFICIAL), and THORACOPLASTY. Collapse therapy has declined since the advent of antitubercular chemotherapy. (Stedman, 25th ed; from Sabiston Jr, Textbook of Surgery, 14th ed, p1733-4)

Fatal mediastinal compression as a late complication of surgical plombage. (1/5)

Surgical plombage was used as a form of collapse therapy for pulmonary tuberculosis before the advent of reliable chemotherapy. A patient developed stridor, recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, and obstruction of the superior vena cava and eventually died as a result of haemorrhage into a large intrathoracic cyst, secondary to a polystan pack inserted 38 years previously.  (+info)

Late extrusion of pulmonary plombage outside the thoracic cavity. (2/5)

Treatment of late complications of plombage by simultaneous removal of plomb and decortication. (3/5)

Two patients with local complications of plombage were treated by removal of the plomb and decortication at a single operation. This provided immediate re-expansion of the lung and avoided the need for thoracoplasty.  (+info)

Collapse and reexpansion of lungs increase microvascular permeability in sheep. (4/5)

The pathogenesis of reexpansion pulmonary edema has not been well studied. We tested the hypothesis that both long term collapse and subsequent reexpansion of the lungs cause reexpansion pulmonary edema by increasing pulmonary microvascular permeability. We investigated lymph dynamics in 15 experiments on collapsed lung and 10 experiments after lung reexpansion in 14 unanesthetized sheep with chronic lymph fistulas. We found that 24-hr left lung collapse increased lymph flow through the caudal mediastinal lymph node from the baseline of 1.71 +/- 0.97 (mean +/- S.D.) g/15 min to 2.01 +/- 0.99 g/15 min, although 2-hr collapse did not affect lymph flow. The L/P ratio did not fall below baseline in either experiment. Pulmonary arterial pressure increased by only about 6 cmH2O both in 2-hr and 24-hr collapse. Reexpansion after 24-hr lung collapse also increased lymph flow from the baseline of 1.64 +/- 0.52 g/15 min to 3.20 +/- 0.79 g/15 min during the first 2 hr after reexpansion. The lymph-to-plasma protein concentration ratio did not fall below the baseline. Reexpansion after 2-hr collapse did not affect these variables. We conclude that both long term lung collapse and subsequent reexpansion lead to reexpansion pulmonary edema by increasing pulmonary microvascular permeability.  (+info)

Two forgotten pioneers. James Carson and George Bodington. (5/5)

James Carson, a Scot, graduated from Edinburgh in 1799. He settled in Liverpool where he became a successful and respected physician and where he also found time to pursue a longstanding interest in physiology and to conduct certain important experiments. He read a series of papers on these experiments and their import before the Literary and Philosophical Society of Liverpool of which the two most important were On the elasticity of the lungs and On lesions of the lungs. In the first he clarified the mechanics of respiration while in the second he suggested that this knowledge might be employed to produce temporary collapse of the lung as a therapeutic measure. Two attempts at a clinical trial were defeated by widespread pleural adhesions but the first recorded attempts at artificial pneumothorax had been made. George Bodington, a Warwickshire man, after serving a surgical apprenticeship studied at St Bartholomew's Hospital and obtained the licence of the Society of Apothecaries in 1825. He later practised near Sutton Coldfield where he was known as an acute observer and a thoughtful and fluent speaker. In 1840 he published an essay on the treatment and cure of pulmonary consumption in which he roundly condemned the current therapy and advocated instead fresh air in abundance, gentle exercise in the open, an adequate and varied diet, and a minimum of medicaments. Violently attacked by the reviewers he became discouraged about tuberculosis and devoted the remainder of his professional life to the care of the mentally ill.  (+info)

Lisa Nicole Carson will always be one of our faves. From her carefree attitude, natural hair and being an example of what a lot of black women look like, while in the eye of Hollywood, Carsons mere presence on television was ground breaking. But Carson was also dealing with bipolar disorder and the actress opened up to People Magazine about her mental health issues.. From the time I stepped away from show business [in 2001] until now, Ive been on a long, very complicated and challenging journey, said Carson. I didnt know if I was going to make it out.. When you lose your mind, its as traumatic as it sounds. Its not anything you can imagine happening to you, Carson stated.. Carson has dealt with several breakdowns, including one that was in the public eye, but now she says shes ready to get back to acting thanks to getting the right combo of medications. Carson also says she wants to help others who are dealing with bipolar disorder.. Its a risk for me to be open, Carson stated. I ...
Adam Alexander Carson (born February 5, 1975) is the drummer of the punk rock and horror punk band AFI. He and Davey Havok are the two original members left in the lineup. Carson also filled in as drummer for the psychobilly band Tiger Army. His drumming can be found on Tiger Armys Early Years EP as well as their debut album Tiger Army. Carson was also a member of Influence 13 - a band formed by Nick 13, Jade Puget (who joined AFI in 1998), Geoff Kresge (who left AFI in 1996), and two other friends. Adam Carson was raised in Ukiah, California, along with fellow AFI members Davey Havok and Jade Puget, and former members Geoff Kresge and Mark Stopholese. Carson acquired an interest in music as early as age three, by which time he had amassed a small collection of 45 records. As a toddler, Carson would also drag pots and pans out of his kitchen and assemble them into a drum set. Carsons aspirations to be a drummer in a band were realized when he was eight or nine years old. He recalls, I came ...

Abstract:Background: For several years, surgical therapies have been the mainstay for treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. However, due to higher complication rates and the advent of potent antituberculosis (anti-TB) medications, the use of surgical therapies has declined. With the increase in the incidence of drug-resistant tuberculosis and failure to achieve satisfactory cure rates with anti-TB medications, surgical treatment might be resurging. Case Report: We recently encountered a patient who had a successful plombage therapy for ...
American doctor Ben Carson (born 1951) overcame poverty, racism, and a violent temper to become a world-renowned neurosurgeon. In 1987, neurosurgeon Ben Carson successfully performed an operation to separate Siamese twins who were born joined at the head. It was a milestone in neurosurgery, but was far from the only noteworthy achievement of Carsons career. He also performed ground-breaking surgery on a twin suffering from an abnormal expansion of the head. Carson was able to relieve the swelling and remove the surplus fluid-all while the unborn twin remained in its mothers uterus. This too was a first, and in other instances Carson has performed operations which have greatly expanded scientific knowledge of the brain and its functions. His can-do spirit, combined with his medical expertise, has made him the surgeon of choice for parents with children suffering rare neurological conditions. If Carson seemed destined for any position when he was a child growing up on the streets of Detroit, he

A pediatric neurosurgeon who has become the darling of conservatives since speaking against nationalized healthcare is now under fire for comments he made about same-sex marriage. Dr. Benjamin Carson told Andrea Mitchell Reports on Friday that he would be willing to step down as commencement speaker at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine after faculty and students signed petitions asking that he not speak. I would say this is their day, and the last thing I would want to do is rain on their parade, Carson told Mitchell. Carson said in interview that he has not notified the university he won t be speaking. I am waiting for appropriate channels, he said. I don t think television is the appropriate channel. The petitions began after Carson told Fox News Channel s Sean Hannity, My thoughts are that marriage is between a man and a woman. It s a ...

Carson was born in Denver, Colorado, to Odie and Olivia Head, who played music professionally under the pseudonym Thompson.[1] They met in Nebraska while working for radio station KMMJ, moved to Colorado and eventually to Springfield, Missouri to join the KWTO music staff. By then, they were better known by their stage names, Shorty and Sue. Shorty Thompson was perhaps best known around the Ozarks as a member of radio and television mainstay the Tall Timber Boys.[2] Wayne Carson wanted to pick up a guitar when he was about 14, after hearing a recording by Merle Travis. Even so, he was quickly taken by the newer sound of rock n roll. He lived in several cities, including Denver, as a young man leading bands, and moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1962.[2] He initially used his parents stage name, becoming known and credited as Wayne Carson Thompson, before dropping the last name and adopting the name Wayne Carson.[1] In the mid-1960s he returned to Springfield, where he began working with ...

Industry attacks backfire. When Silent Spring appeared in 1962, the chemical industry attacked her data, her analysis, her personality, and her scientific credentials. The chemical industry sponsored articles promoting pesticide use and anonymous attacks on Carson, foreshadowing the computer trolls who now attack important environmental articles. A pro-industry review referred to her as a hysterical woman, typical of the sexist attacks.. Carson biographer Linda Lear reports in Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature, that former Secretary of Agriculture and Mormon fundamentalist Ezra Taft Benson suggested to President Dwight Eisenhower in a letter that since Carson was attractive but unmarried, she was probably a Communist.. Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home with dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper, and low self-esteem appeared to preclude the realization of that dream until his mother, with only a third-grade education, challenged her sons to strive for excellence. Young Ben persevered and today is an emeritus professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and he has directed pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Childrens Center for over 29 years. He became the inaugural recipient of a professorship dedicated in his name in May 2008. He is now the Emeritus Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D. and Dr. Evelyn Spiro, R.N. Professor of Pediatric Neurosurgery, having retired on June 30, 2013.. Some career highlights include the first separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head in 1987, the first completely successful separation of type-2 ...
Minneapolis based artist Michael Carson captures the fleeting moments of stylish modern day people. While there is a sense of immediacy in painting them, there is also a timelessness in their 40s and 90s-esque glamour. His subjects fashion is one of the ways that Carson injects himself into his works; patterns in clothing and the interiors of rooms are particularly prevalent, reflecting his interests in design and fashion. One cant help but think of Mad Men when looking at his oil paintings of smoking swingers and business men after work. We usually find them lounging in bars, clubs, backstage fashion shows, and dance studios, earning the artist comparisons to French painter Edgar Degas. Carson, however, likes to think of himself as a figurative painter more than an impressionist. In his statement, he shares, my work is first and foremost figurative studies… Seeing how the work evolves, the subtle and the drastic differences, and looking forward to the future is what keeps me painting. I ...
That comment is rather strange, considering that no one, not Planned Parenthood, not medical researchers, is deliberately killing babies for their tissue. Carson has to know that. But of course, as a GOP candidate, he has to explain away his past activity by making a distinction between what he did, and what Planned Parenthood is accused of doing.. There is one point about the whole Planned Parenthood/fetal tissue issue that Gunter doesnt touch, and someone should call Carson, and the other GOP candidates out on it. Women are going to have abortions. Regardless of your position on the matter, thats a fact.. Those aborted fetuses can be buried, or otherwise disposed of, or they can be used to help, living, breathing human beings, who are suffering from a variety of diseases and medical conditions. What is so wrong with that? ...
Carson Optical was founded in 1990 by Richard Cameron. A former banker, disheartened with Wall Street, Cameron started in his mothers Long Island basement importing and exporting a wide array of products between the US and Japan. Cameron realized early on that Carson needed to focus on products that really improved the overall customer experience. This overall philosophy is still what drives Carson today, and has allowed the company to thrive in an industry often dominated by larger marketing driven competitors.
The full video of the forum can be viewed on Facebook or on C-Span.. I personally have had the opportunity to come in contact with people who are in their teens and having neurological issues. Young people who played high school ball…Individuals who never even got to the NFL.. So The issue, while we focus on the NFL, is more widespread than anyone knows. Carson now devotes much of his time to raising awareness of TBI. He has said he would not allow his 8-year-old grandson to play football.. After the forum, Carson acknowledged his disappointment that head trauma in football, like so much in Washington these days, has become a partisan issue. Rep. Frank Pallone, a New Jersey Democrat who organized the forum along with Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, said Republicans had no interest in convening a formal hearing on the subject. And several members denounced President Donald Trump for his recent suggestion that the NFL is less enjoyable since the league began taking steps to address player ...

Carson was raised in a rural area of Pennsylvania, where she gained her love for wildlife and nature. Later, she studied at the Pennsylvania College for Women until graduating in 1929, and then at Johns Hopkins University. Before serving her post in 1936 at the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Carson taught for five years at the University of Maryland. During this time, she composed and published her first book. Thereafter, her lifes work and writing helped to forge a national consciousness about the environment and wildlife conservation. She is credited posthumously for influencing President Richard M. Nixons formation of the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970, and for the rise of ecofeminism in the U.S.. Carson was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1960 and, after being weakened by her treatment over the next four years, she suffered a fatal heart attack on April 14, 1964. That final year of her life, however, was a testament to her accomplishments as a writer and advocate. In ...
Carson, in his first speech in the state as a candidate, was asked by a voter about the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), the federal mandate that fuel refiners blend a certain volume of ethanol and biodiesel into their gasoline and diesel supplies.I dont particularly like the idea of government subsidies for anything because it interferes with the natural free market, Carson said, according to The Des Moines Register.. Therefore, I would probably be in favor of taking that $4 billion a year we spend on oil subsidies and using that in new fueling stations for 30 percent ethanol blends, he added.. The federal government used to subsidize blender pumps, or gas station pumps that dispense fuel mixed with ethanol, but lawmakers barred the funding in the 2014 farm bill. President Obama proposed new spending on ethanol infrastructure in his 2016 budget, but the proposal has come under fire at the Capitol.. Ending oil subsidies, as Carson proposed, is usually an idea supported by Democrats, but their ...

WALLACE: But let me, if I may - if I may, let me just focus on the military component. Because obviously, after the slaughter of over 100 people, while all of those are important components, the military component is the most immediate one. And you have said that you would, as president try to create an international coalition militarily to go after ISIS. How would you put that together? Who would you call first?. CARSON: Well, what I was just explaining is, you know, how we use the resources that we have. You know, that includes some of our special ops people working in conjunction with an effective fighting force there. Those are the kinds of things that will create enthusiasm, as we begin to take back the land, take back the areas and damage their image throughout the world.. WALLACE: But who would you call first, specifically, to put together an international military coalition?. CARSON: My point being that if we get out there and we really lead and it appears that were making progress, ...

For economic reasons, we do not recommend adding a biomass system at this time. ...

Originally, this building functioned as the Carson City Post Office, Land Office, Weather Bureau and U.S. District Court. It included Carson Citys first and only clock tower, which rises approximately 106 feet above street level. In 1908, the restrooms were upgraded; in 1935, an elevator was installed, the first in Carson City. Then in 1955, a brick loading dock was added to the rear, the lobby was enlarged and the chimney was removed. In 1971, the building ceased to function as the Post Office, which moved to a new building two blocks to the northeast. In 1972, an extensive interior renovation was completed to accommodate the State Library. Very few modifications have been made on the exterior, so the buildings appearance is much the same today as it was over 100 years ago. The wood window and door frames, cast iron columns, safes manufactured by National Safe and Lock Company and the clock tower are all original. Today, the Nevada Commission on Tourism is the main occupant of the building. ...

As a newly-minted resident physician in New York during the late 1980s, I first learned from afar about a certain distinguished neurosurgeon from Baltimore named Benjamin Solomon Carson. Although medical journal articles are the traditional way for most medical doctors to get the latest news about breakthroughs and advances in the field, I became acquainted with Dr. Carsons early contributions to medicine and humanity during a morning ritual known to all doctors as morning rounds.. There I was, on morning bedside rounds during a pediatric rehabilitation residency-training rotation at Albert Einstein-Kennedy Institute Hospital, when my supervising attending physician boldly announced that medical history had been dramatically made. A pair of twins joined at the head (conjoined twins) had been masterfully separated by a pioneering Johns Hopkins physician after a 22-hour grueling and history-making surgical procedure.. The neurosurgeon was Dr. Ben Carson, a young and talented member of the ...

Benjamin Solomon Carson had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home with dire poverty, horrible grades, a horrible temper, and low self-esteem, appeared to preclude the realization of that dream. But today he is the director of pediatric Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, a position he has held since 1984, when he was 33 years old. He is a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics.. In 1987, he gained worldwide recognition as the principal surgeon in the 22-hour separation of the Binder twins from Germany. This was the first time occipital craniopagus twins had been separated with both surviving. The procedure employed hypothermic arrest, the deliberate lowering of body temperature, and circulatory arrest, and sophisticated surgical reconstructive techniques for success. In 1997, Dr. Carson was the primary surgeon in the team of South African and Zambian surgeons that separated type-2 vertical craniopagus twins ...
All five paid staffers in the New Hampshire office of a pro-Ben Carson super-PAC have quit their jobs to volunteer for rival presidential candidate Ted Cruz, a state television station reported Monday.. We think it is important that our party…get behind a single conservative who can win, and we strongly believe that candidate is Ted Cruz, former super-PAC staffer Jerry Sickles told station WMUR. He added that his colleagues had been frustrated by the fact that Carson spent very little time campaigning in New Hampshire. Oddly, Carson appeared in Staten Island earlier this month.. The five former staffers had worked at the 2016 Committee, a super-PAC founded in 2013 to convince the retired neurosurgeon to run for president. Their decision to leave the Carson super-PAC comes less than two weeks after three of Carsons highest-ranking staffers, among them campaign manager Barry Bennett, stepped down from the campaign. Carson said in a statement that he had initiated the shake-up, but Bennett ...
After disposing of his paper, Carhart spent about two years riding line on his cousins Quarter Circle Heart Ranch and served as county clerk of Donley County. He also worked for a short time as a druggist with Jerome D. Stocking and later with B. H. White and Company, general merchants and ranch outfitters at Clarendon. In the spring of 1887, shortly before the Santa Fe Railroad reached the town of Panhandle in Carson County, White sent Carhart there with a stock of goods and a portable building to establish a mercantile store, of which Carhart took charge as manager. Later, after White sold the store, Carhart turned it into a thriving drug business with stock he had purchased from Stocking. Among other products he manufactured quality cigars, which he named after his daughters, Nina and Thelma. He also assisted Henry H. Brooks in establishing the Panhandle Herald. For eight years, beginning in 1889, Carhart served as postmaster, and in 1896 he succeeded Judge James C. Paul as treasurer of ...
Conservative_Utopia, I watched the Conversations From Penn State segment with Dr. Ben Carson which was done back in 2010 and he said many of the same things at the National Prayer Breakfast but of course not as in great a depth as the Penn State interview.. It was a great interview.. I noticed how over 133,000 people have seen it and some 10 low information viewers didnt like it.. Noticed how he talked about how it used to be common for him and other physicians and surgeons to take care of indigent patients but it is much more rare now because they have to fight the beauracracy which has gotten in the way. He also talked about how he used to do some 500 surgeries a year but has since cut back to a mere 300 to 350 a year - I am joking about cutting back low info readers - and that in the beginning he did so many because he was the pediatric neurosurgery department. I was glad to hear that his assistant, Dr. Carol James is still there with him and so many others from the beginning.. I think we ...

PHOENIX-A 30-year-old soldier from Arizona has been killed while serving in Afghanistan. Gov. Jan Brewers office says U.S. Army 1st Lt. Alejo Thompson was killed Friday in Parwan Province. Based at Fort Carson, Colo., he was assigned to the A Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. A native of Yuma, Thompson died of injuries sustained when his unit came under fire while on patrol. Brewer issued a statement Sunday and asked that people hold Thompsons family in their hearts as they gather for Mothers Day.
