We describe the impact on emergency services of the worlds largest recorded and most severe thunderstorm asthma health emergency. The event was associated with a 41.7% increase in emergency service caseload and a dramatic increase in cases of acute respiratory distress.. Although some previous studies have described the influence of thunderstorm asthma on health services such as primary care facilities and emergency departments,71011121337 none have examined emergency medical services. These services are recommended as the first point of call for patients with out-of-hospital health emergencies, and understanding their use and the characteristics of patients presenting during such events can assist health planning. We found a 2.5-fold increase in demand for emergency medical services between 6 pm and midnight on the day of the event. This finding supports previous reports in which thunderstorm asthma has been associated with large and sudden spikes in emergency department and general practice ...

Summary: This community facthsheet explain epidemic thunder storm asthma. People who have asthma or hay fever can get severe asthma symptoms during pollen season when high grass pollen counts combine with a certain type of thunderstorm. When a large number of people develop asthma symptoms over a short period of time, this is known as epidemic thunderstorm asthma. Epidemic thunderstorm asthma events are uncommon and dont occur every year. In south-east Australia they can happen during grass pollen season from October through December. Thunderstorm asthma can affect those with asthma or hay fever - especially people who experience wheezing or coughing with their hay fever. Thats why its important for people with asthma or hay fever to know about thunderstorm asthma and what they can do to help protect themselves during grass pollen season ...

Anthropogenic climate change is a significant driver of change in marine ecosystems globally. To improve mechanistic understanding of the impact of climate-related stressors, experimental work on marine organisms has intensified in recent decades. A previous synthesis paper published nearly a decade ago established that Marine Climate Change Experiments (MCCEs) published from 2000-2009 were primarily laboratory-based…
The future state of a dynamical system is typically calculated by integrating a numerical model, and depends on parameters such as initial conditions, model errors, empirical parameters of the model, and possibly on lateral boundary conditions. Observations add new information that can be combined with model prediction to produce optimal values of dynamical system parameters and reduce their uncertainty. A mathematical methodology that can accomplish this is called data assimilation.. Data assimilation is fundamentally probabilistic since the uncertainty of dynamical system parameters can be described by a probability density function. Since dynamical models add valuable prior information, data assimilation is commonly based on Bayes theorem and thus represents a Bayesian inference. Data assimilation is also nonlinear since dynamical prediction models and observation operators can be highly nonlinear.. CIRA data assimilation research has the following goals:. ...
Human influence on the hydrologic cycle includes regulation and storage, consumptive use and overall redistribution of water resources in space and time. Representing these processes is essential for applications of earth system models in hydrologic and climate predictions, as well as impact studies at regional to global scales. Emerging large-scale research reservoir models use generic operating rules that are flexible for coupling with earth system models. Those generic operating rules have been successful in reproducing the overall regulated flow at large basin scales. This study investigates the uncertainties of the reservoir models from different implementations of the generic operating rules using the complex multi-objective Columbia River Regulation System in northwestern United States as an example to understand their effects on not only regulated flow but also reservoir storage and fraction of the demand that is met. Numerical experiments are designed to test new generic operating rules ...

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in the oceans biological carbon pump by providing an advective/mixing pathway for ~ 20% of export production. DOM is known to have a stoichiometry depleted in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) compared to the particulate organic matter pool, a~fact that is often omitted from biogeochemical-ocean general circulation models. However the variable C : N : P stoichiometry of DOM becomes important when quantifying carbon export from the upper ocean and linking the nutrient cycles of N and P with that of carbon. Here we utilize recent advances in DOM observational data coverage and offline tracer-modeling techniques to objectively constrain the variable production and remineralization rates of the DOM C / N / P pools in a simple biogeochemical-ocean model of DOM cycling. The optimized DOM cycling parameters are then incorporated within the Biogeochemical Elemental Cycling (BEC) component of the Community Earth System Model and validated against the ...

0002] Interest in roofing of increased solar reflectance has gained momentum in recent years as a way to reduce summer cooling costs and to mitigate smog-producing urban heat island effects. The EPA Energy Star Initiative requires steep-slope residential roofing (e.g. asphalt shingles) to have a minimum solar reflectance of 0.25 initially and a 3-year aged solar reflectance of at least 0.15. Low slope roofing according to Energy Star must have an initial solar reflectance of 0.65 and a 3-year aged solar reflectance of at least 0.50. EPA Energy Star thermal emittance requirement for roofing (regardless of type and age) is 0.75 minimum. Californias Title 24 Initiative requires 3-year aged reflectance minimums of 0.20 for steep slope roofing, 0.70 for low slope roofing, and similarly requires a thermal emittance minimum of 0.75. Conformance to these reflectance and emittance requirements is possible for many types of asphalt shingles. Standard shingles surfaced with light-colored roofing ...
The transverse thermal properties of the electrons photoemitted from GaAs determine the intrinsic beam emittance, an important quantity in applications such as polarized electron sources and high-brightness sources. In this paper, emittance measurements using the Illinois/CEBAF polarized electron source are described. The emittance was measured as a function of both the laser beam spot size and laser wavelength at low currents. The data was used to infer the transverse thermal energy of the electrons photoemitted from GaAs for wavelengths between 514 and 840 nm. Near the bandgap the transverse energy is {approximately}34 meV, a factor of 3 lower than that of the beam from a typical thermionic electron gun. 8 refs., 2 figs.

Traditional meta-analyses, however, are challenged by the complexity and diversity of experimental results. We illustrate how several key issues can be addressed via a multivariate, hierarchical Bayesian meta-analysis (MHBM) approach applied to information extracted from published studies. We applied an MHBM to log-response ratios for aboveground biomass (AB, n = 300), belowground biomass (BB, n = 205), and soil CO2 exchange (SCE, n = 544), representing 100 studies. The MHBM accounted for study duration, climate effects, and covariation among the AB, BB, and SCE responses to elevated CO2 (eCO2) and/or ...

Climate indices show large variability in CMIP climate predictions. In this presentation, we propose to weight multi-model climate simulations to reduce the uncertainty in climate predictions, and better estimate the future evolution of climate indices. The proposed methodology is based on advanced data science tools (i.e, data assimilation, analog forecasting, model evidence metrics), to accurately compute distances between current observations and simulated climate indices. This low-cost procedure is tested on a simplified climate model. The results show that the methods can be applied locally and is able to identify relevant parameterizations. ...
Most commonly, analyzed products are created using three-dimensional or four-dimensional (3DVAR, 4DVAR) variational data assimilation schemes. 3DVAR treats observations within some time interval about the target analysis time as occurring at the time of the analysis. 4DVAR uses the observations distributed about the target analysis time to estimate the value. (Very simplistically, think of a least squares fit of the observations.) An alternative 4DVAR approach is to use nudging where damped differences between the observations and the initial forecast guess, which is assumed to be perfect, are used to constrain the analysis toward the observations.. ...
This paper summarizes recent efforts on Observing System Evaluation (OS-Eval) by the Ocean Data Assimilation and Prediction (ODAP) communities such as GODAE OceanView and CLIVAR-GSOP. It provides some examples of existing OS-Eval methodologies, and attempts to discuss the potential and limitation of the existing approaches. Observing System Experiment (OSE) studies illustrate the impacts of the severe decrease in the number of TAO buoys during 2012-2014 and TRITON buoys since 2013 on ODAP system performance. Multi-system evaluation of the impacts of assimilating satellite sea surface salinity data based on OSEs has been performed to demonstrate the need to continue and enhance satellite salinity missions. Impacts of underwater gliders have been assessed using Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) to provide guidance on the effective coordination of the western North Atlantic observing system elements. OSSEs are also being performed under H2020 AtlantOS project with the goal to enhance and
Data assimilation refers to methods for updating the state vector (initial condition) of a complex spatiotemporal model (such as a numerical weather model) by combining new observations with one or more prior forecasts. We consider the potential feasibility of this approach for making short-term (60-day) forecasts of the growth and spread of a malignant brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme) in individual patient cases, where the observations are synthetic magnetic resonance images of a hypothetical tumor. We apply a modern state estimation algorithm (the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter), previously developed for numerical weather prediction, to two different mathematical models of glioblastoma, taking into account likely errors in model parameters and measurement uncertainties in magnetic resonance imaging. The filter can accurately shadow the growth of a representative synthetic tumor for 360 days (six 60-day forecast/update cycles) in the presence of a moderate degree of systematic model error

In Mendoza in Argentina they have nets to protect the vines against hail. In Burgundy they prefer to launch silver nitrate rockets in to the clouds. The effect is that the hail grains become smaller and fall more slowly to the ground. Hopefully. This is not a system that works all the time. The term Single Cell Thunderstorm as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as This type of thunderstorm develops in weak vertical wind shear environments. On a hodograph, this would appear as a closely grouped set of random dots around the center of the graph. They are characterized by a single updraft core and a single downdraft that descends into the same area as the updraft. The downdraft and its outflow boundary then cut off the thunderstorm inflow. This causes the updraft and the thunderstorm to dissipate. Single cell thunderstorms are short-lived. They only last about 1/2 hour to an hour. These thunderstorms will occasionally become severe (3/4 inch hail, wind gusts in the excess of 58 miles an hour, or a tornado), but only briefly. In this case, they are called Pulse Severe Thunderstorms. . ...

Always having the thoughts of ALS in the back of our minds, never knowing if or when, caused us to do and experience things most wait until retirement years to enjoy. So looking back dealing with ALS at a young age instilled valuable lessons in both of us as to what is really important, David said.. Unfortunately their fears became a reality when Bonita started showing signs of muscle weakness. She was diagnosed with ALS in March of 2014, at the age of 65. David said as the disease progressed Bonita never lost her will to keep fighting. He became her full time caretaker tackling it head on.. Regardless of being imprisoned within her body, unable to do even the simplest task, she always managed to smile, that quirky little smile I fell in love with 50 years ago, David said. Her smile reinforced her love for me. Her body had failed but not her mind, so I became her arms and legs, we became one in each other.. And you may wonder how after 50 years together and now taking on the role of ...

Most people dont even realize they have had hail damage to their roof, siding, or fascia materials. The impact of hail damage can loosen, fracture or remove granules from your asphalt shingles, Hail can leave tiny to large pits in your siding and fascia as well. The granules protect the asphalt from sunlight and Ultra Violet Light (U.V.). The roofing asphalt will deteriorate very quickly once it has had hail impact and is exposed to the sun. This is the reason hail damaged roofing will prematurely fail. Hail damaged roofs may or may not show up immediately as visual damage to the inexperienced observer. In some cases, the effects may not be visible or apparent for about a year or two. The effects of a hailstorm void the shingle manufacturers warranty, as they cannot warrant against Acts of God such as hailstorms. This is why it is imperative that you have a trustworthy professional working in your best interest. Your Tower Roofing professional is expertly trained to:. ...
Figure 2: Probability distribution functions (PDFs) from combining anthropogenic radiative forcings. Three cases are shown: the total of all anthropogenic radiative forcings (block filled red curve); Long-lived greenhouse gases and ozone radiative forcings (dashed red curve); and aerosol direct and cloud albedo radiative forcings (dashed blue curve). Surface albedo, contrails and stratospheric water vapour RFs are included in the total curve but not in the others. Natural radiative forcings (solar and volcanic) are not included in these three PDFs. (IPCC AR4 Figure 2.20b). Greenhouse gases and ozone contribute warming of +2.9 Wm-2. The majority of this is from CO2 (+1.66 Wm-2). This warming is offset by anthropogenic aerosols, reducing the total human caused warming to 1.6 Wm-2. So surprisingly, the warming from CO2 actually exceeds the final total radiative forcing. If ever asked how much CO2 contributes to global warming, you could say all of it... and some! But a more appropriate response ...
Hansen et al. (2013) state: Burning all fossil fuels would produce a different, practically uninhabitable, planet. ... Our calculated global warming in this case is 16 °C, with warming at the poles approximately 30 °C. Calculated warming over land areas averages approximately 20 °C. Such temperatures would eliminate grain production in almost all agricultural regions in the world. Increased stratospheric water vapour would diminish the stratospheric ozone layer. More ominously, global warming of that magnitude would make most of the planet uninhabitable by humans. And they go on to explain the 35 °C wet bulb temperature problem, which actually comes from Sherwood and Huber (2010) below. ...
Several decades of scientific research have yielded significant advances in understanding the oceans role in regulating Earths climate. This summary covers some of the major points about abrupt climate change that are often misunderstood.
Abstract. The isotopic composition of carbon (Δ14C and δ13C) in atmospheric CO2 and in oceanic and terrestrial carbon reservoirs is influenced by anthropogenic emissions and by natural carbon exchanges, which can respond to and drive changes in climate. Simulations of 14C and 13C in the ocean and terrestrial components of Earth system models (ESMs) present opportunities for model evaluation and for investigation of carbon cycling, including anthropogenic CO2 emissions and uptake. The use of carbon isotopes in novel evaluation of the ESMs component ocean and terrestrial biosphere models and in new analyses of historical changes may improve predictions of future changes in the carbon cycle and climate system. We compile existing data to produce records of Δ14C and δ13C in atmospheric CO2 for the historical period 1850-2015. The primary motivation for this compilation is to provide the atmospheric boundary condition for historical simulations in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 ...
Aerosols are the tiny suspended particles in the atmosphere playing a major role in influencing the net radiation budget of the earth. The aerosols also affect cloud microphysics and those with land origin, possibly reduce the monsoon rainfall. Dynamic and diverse nature of the aerosols varies according to different locations. The aerosols originating due to desert dust, rural atmospheric situations, urban pollutants and marine areas have wide variations and display specific characteristics. Routine monitoring of aerosol events and their subsequent dispersal pattern are important in order to understand their role in climatic process. Hence, it is very important to study the aerosols and their retrieval strategy from the ocean colour remote sensing sensors. The satellite sensors provide platform for making observations covering large area as also their short-term and frequent repetivity. Ocean-colour sensors e.g. CZCS, SeaWiFS, MODIS, POLDAR, Oceansat-1 & 2 OCM have been used to study aerosols, apart
The major ions, sodium (Na+), calcium (Ca2+), and chloride (Cl−), deposited in central Antarctica and preserved in ice cores originate from both marine and continental sources. They provide important proxy records, helping to reconstruct past climatic processes. However, it is difficult to clearly separate the individual contributions from the two sources, particularly the continental one during glacial periods. On the basis of Na+ and Ca2+ records at an unprecedented resolution from the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) Dome C ice core back to the penultimate glacial period, mean ion mass ratios were deduced for the continental and the sea-salt aerosol body over East Antarctica. The sea-salt ion mass ratios are in the range predicted for both wind-induced bubble bursting of breaking waves on the open ocean and sea ice brine-derived aerosols, respectively, thus allowing no clear decision on the contribution of sea ice to the central Antarctic sea-salt aerosol. The ...

A new approach of model parameter estimation is used with simulated measurements to recover both biological and economic input parameters of a natural resource model. The procedure efficiently combines time series of observations with a simple bioeconomic fisheries model to optimally estimate the model parameters. Using identical twin experiments, it is shown that the parameters of the model can be retrieved. The procedure provides an efficient way of calculating poorly known model parameters by fitting model results to observations. In separate experiments with exact and noisy data, we have demonstrated that the adjoint technique of parameter estimation can be an efficient method of analyzing bioeconomic data. Results of sensitivity analysis of the model parameters show that the environmental carrying capacity (e.g., habitat) is the most important input parameter in the model ...
The Institute of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (France) is planning the set-up of an automatic nuclear aerosol monitoring network over the French territory. Each of the stations will be able to automatically sample the air aerosol content and provide activity concentration measurements on several radionuclides. This should help monitor the French and neighbouring countries nuclear power plants set. It would help evaluate the impact of a radiological incident occurring at one of these nuclear facilities. This paper is devoted to the spatial design of such a network. Here, any potential network is judged on its ability to extrapolate activity concentrations measured on the network stations over the whole domain. The performance of a network is quantitatively assessed through a cost function that measures the discrepancy between the extrapolation and the true concentration fields. These true fields are obtained through the computation of a database of dispersion accidents over one year of
Recent studies have suggested that global mean surface temperature would remain approximately constant on multi-century timescales after CO2 emissions1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 are stopped. Here we use Earth system model simulations of such a stoppage to demonstrate that in some models, surface temperature may actually increase on multi-century timescales after an initial century-long decrease. This occurs in spite of a decline in radiative forcing that exceeds the decline in ocean heat uptake-a circumstance that would otherwise be expected to lead to a decline in global temperature. The reason is that the warming effect of decreasing ocean heat uptake together with feedback effects arising in response to the geographic structure of ocean heat uptake10, 11, 12 overcompensates the cooling effect of decreasing atmospheric CO2 on multi-century timescales. Our study also reveals that equilibrium climate sensitivity estimates based on a widely used method of regressing the Earths energy imbalance ...
conditions.. Okay, lets say that abrupt climate change occurs in the next 50 years (15-25% possibility? might be a good guess.) We know from paleoclimate evidence that our climate system historically works by tipping from one state to another in as little as ten years, is unstable, chaotic and most likely being forced closer to a tipping point by extra human CO2 forcing.. This CO2 forcing is expected to increase almost exponentially in the next 200 years.. So we can say with a 95% probability, that abrupt climate change *will* happen in the future (it always has)…the question is when?. Okay, if this happens, could it alone (without even other GW forces alone) cause the possible end of our civilization…that is a possible question that the Pentagon and others are investigating.. The scientific communtity is conservative, and treats this, correctly, as an extreme scenario (but so was the ozone hole which proved to be a near-worse-case scenario).. All right, so we get abrupt climate change (We ...
Greenhouse gas (GHG) additions to Earths atmosphere initially reduce global outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), thereby warming the planet. In select environments with temperature inversions, however, increased GHG concentrations can actually increase local OLR. Negative top-of-atmosphere and effective radiative forcing (ERF) from this situation give the impression that local surface temperatures could cool in response to GHG increases. Here we consider an extreme scenario in which GHG concentrations are increased only within the warmest layers of winter near-surface inversions of the Arctic and Antarctic. We find, using a fully coupled Earth system model, that the underlying surface warms despite the GHG addition exerting negative ERF and cooling the troposphere in the vicinity of the GHG increase. This unique radiative forcing and thermal response is facilitated by the high stability of the polar winter atmosphere, which inhibits thermal mixing and amplifies the impact of surface radiative ...

At the same time, BioEarth student Nergui is conducting regional analyses of
Abstract. Owing to their important roles in biogeochemical cycles, phytoplankton functional types (PFTs) have been the aim of an increasing number of ocean color algorithms. Yet, none of the existing methods are based on phytoplankton carbon (C) biomass, which is a fundamental biogeochemical and ecological variable and the unit of accounting in Earth system models. We present a novel bio-optical algorithm to retrieve size-partitioned phytoplankton carbon from ocean color satellite data. The algorithm is based on existing methods to estimate particle volume from a power-law particle size distribution (PSD). Volume is converted to carbon concentrations using a compilation of allometric relationships. We quantify absolute and fractional biomass in three PFTs based on size - picophytoplankton (0.5-2 µm in diameter), nanophytoplankton (2-20 µm) and microphytoplankton (20-50 µm). The mean spatial distributions of total phytoplankton C biomass and individual PFTs, derived from global SeaWiFS ...

Dr Dominique Thompson, a former GP and now an independent consultant in student health and wellbeing says her former practice, the Bristol Student Health Service, had its sexual health funding cut by £20,000 by the local authority. She points out that while this is not the sort of thing to provoke a public outcry, it will have long-term effects on the patients and on GPs.. The current generation will grow up without the public health advice and information campaigns and when they start to have problems it will be general practice that they will go to first.. GPs have started to see the impact already but the real problem with these cuts is the impact is insidious and will be seen down the line.. Local authorities claim they have little choice. The Local Government Association is limited in its response due to purdah rules in the run-up to this months local elections, but its community wellbeing board chair Councillor Izzi Seccombe said last year: [Taking] vital money away from the ...
