Age as a constituent element or influence contributing to the production of a result. It may be applicable to the cause or the effect of a circumstance. It is used with human or animal concepts but should be differentiated from AGING, a physiological process, and TIME FACTORS which refers only to the passage of time.
Maleness or femaleness as a constituent element or influence contributing to the production of a result. It may be applicable to the cause or effect of a circumstance. It is used with human or animal concepts but should be differentiated from SEX CHARACTERISTICS, anatomical or physiological manifestations of sex, and from SEX DISTRIBUTION, the number of males and females in given circumstances.
The interchange of goods or commodities, especially on a large scale, between different countries or between populations within the same country. It includes trade (the buying, selling, or exchanging of commodities, whether wholesale or retail) and business (the purchase and sale of goods to make a profit). (From Random House Unabridged Dictionary, 2d ed, p411, p2005 & p283)
A republic in the Greater Antilles in the West Indies. Its capital is Santo Domingo. With Haiti, it forms the island of Hispaniola - the Dominican Republic occupying the eastern two thirds, and Haiti, the western third. It was created in 1844 after a revolt against the rule of President Boyer over the entire island of Hispaniola, itself visited by Columbus in 1492 and settled the next year. Except for a brief period of annexation to Spain (1861-65), it has been independent, though closely associated with the United States. Its name comes from the Spanish Santo Domingo, Holy Sunday, with reference to its discovery on a Sunday. (From Webster's New Geographical Dictionary, 1988, p338, 506 & Room, Brewer's Dictionary of Names, 1992, p151)

The unstable triatomic form of oxygen, O3. It is a powerful oxidant that is produced for various chemical and industrial uses. Its production is also catalyzed in the ATMOSPHERE by ULTRAVIOLET RAY irradiation of oxygen or other ozone precursors such as VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS and NITROGEN OXIDES. About 90% of the ozone in the atmosphere exists in the stratosphere (STRATOSPHERIC OZONE).
Statistical models which describe the relationship between a qualitative dependent variable (that is, one which can take only certain discrete values, such as the presence or absence of a disease) and an independent variable. A common application is in epidemiology for estimating an individual's risk (probability of a disease) as a function of a given risk factor.
Nitrogen oxide (NO2). A highly poisonous gas. Exposure produces inflammation of lungs that may only cause slight pain or pass unnoticed, but resulting edema several days later may cause death. (From Merck, 11th ed) It is a major atmospheric pollutant that is able to absorb UV light that does not reach the earth's surface.
Procedures for finding the mathematical function which best describes the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. In linear regression (see LINEAR MODELS) the relationship is constrained to be a straight line and LEAST-SQUARES ANALYSIS is used to determine the best fit. In logistic regression (see LOGISTIC MODELS) the dependent variable is qualitative rather than continuously variable and LIKELIHOOD FUNCTIONS are used to find the best relationship. In multiple regression, the dependent variable is considered to depend on more than a single independent variable.

Studies used to test etiologic hypotheses in which inferences about an exposure to putative causal factors are derived from data relating to characteristics of persons under study or to events or experiences in their past. The essential feature is that some of the persons under study have the disease or outcome of interest and their characteristics are compared with those of unaffected persons.
Studies in which subsets of a defined population are identified. These groups may or may not be exposed to factors hypothesized to influence the probability of the occurrence of a particular disease or other outcome. Cohorts are defined populations which, as a whole, are followed in an attempt to determine distinguishing subgroup characteristics.
Cause of Death
Interactional process combining investigation, discussion, and agreement by a number of people in the preparation and carrying out of a program to ameliorate conditions of need or social pathology in the community. It usually involves the action of a formal political, legal, or recognized voluntary body.

Permanent roads having a line of rails fixed to ties and laid to gage, usually on a leveled or graded ballasted roadbed and providing a track for freight cars, passenger cars, and other rolling stock. Cars are designed to be drawn by locomotives or sometimes propelled by self-contained motors. (From Webster's 3d) The concept includes the organizational and administrative aspects of railroads as well.
Emigration and Immigration
The maintenance of certain aspects of the environment within a defined space to facilitate the function of that space; aspects controlled include air temperature and motion, radiant heat level, moisture, and concentration of pollutants such as dust, microorganisms, and gases. (McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 4th ed)

Emigrants and Immigrants
Enumerations of populations usually recording identities of all persons in every place of residence with age or date of birth, sex, occupation, national origin, language, marital status, income, relation to head of household, information on the dwelling place, education, literacy, health-related data (e.g., permanent disability), etc. The census or "numbering of the people" is mentioned several times in the Old Testament. Among the Romans, censuses were intimately connected with the enumeration of troops before and after battle and probably a military necessity. (From Last, A Dictionary of Epidemiology, 3d ed; Garrison, An Introduction to the History of Medicine, 4th ed, p66, p119)
A set of statistical methods used to group variables or observations into strongly inter-related subgroups. In epidemiology, it may be used to analyze a closely grouped series of events or cases of disease or other health-related phenomenon with well-defined distribution patterns in relation to time or place or both.
Notification or reporting by a physician or other health care provider of the occurrence of specified contagious diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV infections to designated public health agencies. The United States system of reporting notifiable diseases evolved from the Quarantine Act of 1878, which authorized the US Public Health Service to collect morbidity data on cholera, smallpox, and yellow fever; each state in the US has its own list of notifiable diseases and depends largely on reporting by the individual health care provider. (From Segen, Dictionary of Modern Medicine, 1992)
The ratio of two odds. The exposure-odds ratio for case control data is the ratio of the odds in favor of exposure among cases to the odds in favor of exposure among noncases. The disease-odds ratio for a cohort or cross section is the ratio of the odds in favor of disease among the exposed to the odds in favor of disease among the unexposed. The prevalence-odds ratio refers to an odds ratio derived cross-sectionally from studies of prevalent cases.
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
An acquired defect of cellular immunity associated with infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a CD4-positive T-lymphocyte count under 200 cells/microliter or less than 14% of total lymphocytes, and increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections and malignant neoplasms. Clinical manifestations also include emaciation (wasting) and dementia. These elements reflect criteria for AIDS as defined by the CDC in 1993.
Healthy communities must also be sustainable communities. (1/132)The author contends that healthy communities must be both environmentally and socially sustainable, given that health depends on the quality of the built and natural environments, and that global change resulting from the industrial economy is affecting the web of life. He argues that suburban sprawl wastes scarce resources and disproportionately places those resources in the hands of suburban dwellers. Urban areas can be made more environmentally sustainable, especially with respect to energy consumption, which will help reduce air pollution and climate change and contribute in other ways to improved health. The city government's role in community health improvement. (2/132)Amid increasing pressures to address complex issues not traditionally assigned to localities, Healthy Cities is seen as a powerful model for community improvement and quality-of-life enhancements for individuals and organizations willing to think beyond the traditional local government management models and responsibilities. As a model for community-oriented government, it offers opportunities for fostering a return to "barnraising" concepts, civic responsibility, participation, tailoring solutions to local circumstances, and the transition of local government to governance models. Police as contributors to Healthy Communities: Aiken, South Carolina. (3/132)In Aiken, South Carolina, community policing has led to numerous innovative programs that have contributed to a healthy community. The MOMS and COPS (Managing Our Maternity System with Community Oriented Policing System) program has played a significant part in the county's 50% decrease in infant mortality since 1989 and contributed to Aiken's designation as an All-America City in 1997. Other programs include a mentoring program for at-risk teen girls; instant crime reporting with donated cellular phones; seminars for seniors to alert them to scams and common crimes; demolition of unsafe homes; free installation of smoke detectors; a child ID program; and parental education on child brain development. A park for all the people. (4/132)A small park in downtown Oakland, California, has been a focal point for community-building and neighborhood improvement. This effort embodies the Healthy Cities cooperative approach to promoting social justice and positive community change. The story of the revitalization of this park is a story of individual and personal actions that collectively have shaped policy and strategy to improve the quality of life in this city. (+info)
The pathology of planning. (5/132)A study of morbidity on a new housing estate reveals a higher prevalence rate of both physical and mental illness. Much of this is due to physical factors associated with the estate which could have been avoided in the light of previous experience had more attention been given to detail. The proposals embodied in the management arrangements for the reorganised National Health Service should provide the machinery to prevent these faults recurring. (+info)
Root shock: the consequences of African American dispossession. (6/132)Urban renewal was one of several processes that contributed to deurbanization of American cities in the second half of the 20th century. Urban renewal was an important federal policy that affected thousands of communities in hundreds of cities. Urban renewal was to achieve "clearance" of "blight" and "slum" areas so that they could be rebuilt for new uses other than housing the poor. Urban renewal programs fell disproportionately on African American communities, leading to the slogan "Urban renewal is Negro removal." The short-term consequences were dire, including loss of money, loss of social organization, and psychological trauma. The long-term consequences flow from the social paralysis of dispossession, most important, a collapse of political action. This has important implications for the well-being of African Americans. It also raises important questions about the strength and quality of American democracy. (+info)
Biological consequences of land use. (7/132)The primary goals of land-use planning are enunciated. A plea is made for consideration of the total biosphere and not just its separate components. The environmental impact statement process is reviewed and some suggestions made for its strengthening. Moves for international adoption of this process are noted, as well as the concept of eco-development currently under examination by UN agencies. (+info)
Land use and transportation issues in environmental control. (8/132)Analyses have been made of the effects of environmental controls and planning at regional, subarea, and project levels. The results obtained at the regional level are reviewed for a proposed highway development around Baltimore, Md. The findings for both short-term and long-term effects of alternative transport policies are summarized in respect of population and employment, economic indicators, traffic and travel, air quality, water and solid waste, noise, and environmentally sensitive areas. Problems at subarea and project levels are briefly considered. (+info)

Urban sprawl - Wikipedia
Whether urban sprawl does increase problems of automobile dependency and whether conversely, policies of smart growth can reduce them have been fiercely contested issues over several decades. An influential study in 1989 by Peter Newman and Jeff Kenworthy compared 32 cities across North America, Australia, Europe and Asia. The study has been criticised for its methodology but the main finding that denser cities, particularly in Asia, have lower car use than sprawling cities, particularly in North America, has been largely accepted although the relationship is clearer at the extremes across continents than it is within countries where conditions are more similar. Within cities, studies from across many countries (mainly in the developed world) have shown that denser urban areas with greater mixture of land use and better public transport tend to have lower car use than less dense suburban and ex-urban residential areas. This usually holds true even after controlling for socio-economic ...
Fat City: Questioning the Relationship Between Urban Sprawl and Obesity
Downloadable (with restrictions)! Author(s): Eid, Jean & Overman, Henry G & Puga, Diego & Turner, Matthew A. 2007 Abstract: We study the relationship between urban sprawl and obesity. Using data that tracks individuals over time, we find no evidence that urban sprawl causes obesity. We show that previous findings of a positive relationship most likely reflect a failure to properly control for the fact the individuals who are more likely to be obese choose to live in more sprawling neighbourhoods. Our results indicate that current interest in changing the built environment to counter the rise in obesity is misguided.

Accessory Dwelling Units, such as this one in Northern California, can provide affordable housing and rental income for homeowners. Photo via Forbes.. Creating affordable rental housing in a community is often a long and arduous process. One strategy to combat this is for cities to allow the creation of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) through amended zoning codes. ADUs, also known as granny flats are small apartments built on a property with a preexisting home as the primary structure. Units typically function as studio apartments and tend to accommodate one or two people. ADUs can allow for seniors to age in place, provide homeowners with extra rental income, and fill a gap in affordable rental units.. ...

Congratulations to America: Huge Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction | Newgeography.com
Trying to design subdivisions for high density, transit oriented developments (smart growth) is an insult to the design process itself. Architectural design is both an art and a science. However, its predominately (in my view) an art, since people choose where they want to live based mostly on emotional factors. For example, people dont want to live in towering 5 story smart growth condos next to screeching light rail trains. Instead, they prefer a half acre with a private yard in the suburbs, next to large parks with biking trails. Fewer otherwise talented folks will enter the architectural and planning professions, knowing that they must comply with state mandated high density standards ... that make it impossible to use ones creative process to design spacious, green suburbs ... since the new standards require clearcutting all trees and building 30 three story townhomes per acre with no yards.. Second, trying to reduce VMTs (vehicle miles traveled) through compact urban design (smart ...

Latham Circle store is welcomed, opposition rises in Ballston Spa The retailer is building what will become the first anchor store at the Shoppes at Latham Circle, the former site of Latham Circle Mall, a 180,000-square-foot supercenter with a full grocery store. In Ballston Spa, the discount chain wants to build a supercenter at routes 50 and 67 but it has faced some heated opposition from Smart Growth Ballston. Earlier this month, Smart Growth Ballston announced the results of a survey that said between 65 and 70 percent of respondents opposed big-box store development. Darren Dopp, a partner in Patricia Lynch Associates public relations firm who works with Wal-Mart, said the area where the chain proposes to build has an auto parts store and a dollar store being built next to the site and an Agway store around the corner. Despite the public opposition, with competing pro and con signs on residents lawns, Wertz said the chain has listened to neighbors views. Besides building its traditional
Urban Sprawl And Obesity
Downloadable! In the U.S., urban sprawl and the rise in obesity rates have been two powerful trends during the latter half of the 20th century. Previous empirical work has found that obesity rates are influenced by labor market outcomes that are fundamentally shaped by the spatial pattern of developed land. We examine these potential linkages in an urban spatial model augmented to include time allocation and weight. Residents maximize utility defined over housing, weight, and food subject to a fixed time budget allocated to commuting, calorie expenditure, and work. We examine how weight is affected by commuting distance, food prices, and the rate of calorie expenditure; how a reduction in transportation costs affects weight throughout the city; and how initial weight affects location decisions. We identify, and explore the significance of, the conditions under which weight gain is associated with common features of sprawl.

A More Objective Attitude Toward the Suburbs (Almost) | Newgeography.com
The title of Wimsatts original book, focusing on grafitti and hip-hop culture, has a ring reflective of the irrational and ideological condemnation that has been far too typical of some of the urban planning community. Wimsatt cites five myths about suburbs in a Washington Post opinion piece. To be charitable, he gets as many as four of them right. These include his discovery that suburbs are not white middle-class enclaves, that they can be cool, that they are not necessarily politically conservative, and that suburbanites care about the environment. However, Wimsatt still has some distance to go. His last myth suggests that suburbs are not the result of the free market. This general proposition is tenable, for example, given large lot zoning requirements, which have caused many urban areas to consume far more land than they would have if the market had been allowed to operate. The problem with Wimsatts free-market analysis is his acceptance of three additional myths.. Myth 1: Smart Growth ...

Sprawl, Justice, and Citizenship: The Civic Costs of the American Way of Life - Oxford Scholarship
Must the strip mall and the eight-lane highway define 21st century American life? That is a central question posed by critics of suburban and exurban living in America. Yet despite the ubiquity of the critique, it never sticks-Americans by the scores of millions have willingly moved into sprawling developments over the past few decades. Americans find many of the more substantial criticisms of sprawl easy to ignore because they often come across as snobbish in tone. Yet as this book explains, sprawl does create real, measurable social problems. This book is unique in two important ways. First, while it highlights the deleterious effects of sprawl on civic life in America, it is also evenhanded. The book does not dismiss the pastoral, homeowning ideal that is at the root of sprawl, and is sympathetic to the vast numbers of Americans who very clearly prefer it. Secondly, the books critique is neither aesthetic nor moralistic in tone, but based on social science. Utilizing a landmark 30,000-person survey,
A Photo Essay on School Sprawl | GIS in Educati...
Schools used to be the heart of a neighborhood or community. Children and not a few teachers could walk to class, or to the playground or ball field on the weekend. This was relatively easy to do, because the schools were placed within, not separated from, their neighborhoods. They were human-scaled and their architecture was not just utilitarian, but signaled their importance in the community. Now it has become hard to tell one from a Walmart or Target. What better way to demonstrate the concepts of urban sprawl, automobile-dependent city planning and economies of scale than by analyzing the very geographic context of our schools themselves? This is a very nicely arranged photo essay that most could spark conversation and would foster some discussion on how best to plan neighborhoods and spatially arrange the city. A Little Urbanity: January 2005
So said Geoffrey Anderson from the Environmental Protection Agency this afternoon at the Greensboro Historical Museum.. Anderson was in town to present the 2004 Smart Growth Award to the City of Greensboro for the Southside development. (Most of the credit for that project should go to Sue Schwartz, who is the citys chief neighborhood planner, and just an all-around great person. You rock, Sue! . . . ahem . . . now, back to what Mr. Anderson said.). What really struck me about Andersons talk was how un-regulatory it was. He started by noting how much smart growth in the US has been locally driven, and is not the result of state or federal mandates. Southside is a perfect example of that. Greensboro wanted to help a blighted area, came up with a novel development ordinance, and just got it done.. Anderson also noted that the market for this kind of development is already strong and is growing because of changing demographics in the U.S. Whereas traditional housing developments since the 1950s ...
External Assistance for Urban Development: A Scoping Study for Further Research
Cities are central to efforts in tackling poverty and vital to economic growth. This capacity to create positive change suggests that the urban development agenda would be a natural draw for the international development community. Homi Kharas, Laurence Chandy, and Joshua Hermias review what has been happening with external assistance for urban development and examine urban development in the broader context of changes in the global aid architecture.

I think they could not have responded as effectively had they not had the opportunity to meet with those leaders, Canavor said. For example, with Smart City Jakarta, they got a chance to see and visit all of the new, modern technology sites, which allowed them to experience it all real-time.. Toward the end of the program, the students collaborated with counterparts from Harvard University, the University of Chicago and BINUS University Indonesia to present a concrete proposal on inclusive smart growth to the leaders and stakeholders.. Canavor said that this collaboration was part of an effort to build the students ability to collaborate with people from different backgrounds.. The goal of this trip was to provide five promising undergraduate Georgetown students from different backgrounds and majors a unique learning experience focused on honing their cultural intelligence skills: the ability to cross divides and thrive in diverse cultures, Canavor said.. America Walks Twitter Chat with Ron Sims on January 20 | AmericaWalks
Cities need to ask citizens if their communities are walkable. That doesnt happen right now. - Ron Sims You say the issue of walkable communities is a civil rights issue. Can you explain what you mean?. Communities of a color are seldom beneficiaries of walkable investment.. Poor communities and communities of color seldom receive the paths and wide sidewalks needed for safe walking.. At the 2015 National Walking Summit you challenged us to turn walking advocates into a movement. How do we build a successful movement?. Movements require us to make alliances with smart growth and healthy community programs.. Walking advocates need to educate the health care system on the benefits of walkable communities.. People need to meet with health care leaders in your communities- doctors, hospitals, clinics, insurance companies.. When you talk to health care professionals, tell them why they should do this and where in the community it should be done.. What are the two major things that the walking ...
Exploring Application of Spatial Analysis in Urban and Public Policy Research | Population Studies and Training Center | Brown...
Add to calendar. Costa will present his research using historical GIS data to investigate the relationship between transportation policy decisions and the formation of São Paulos peripheral area. The paper uses Granger causality models and data on transportation and urban development to measure the co-development of these factors in the city between 1881 and 2013. Findings confirm the hypothesis that the peripheral urban sprawl of São Paulo is related to road transportation deployment. Evidence shows that mass transit investments have historically been followed by significant building densification in surroundings. Costas research explores how critical juncture decisions made during the 1930s prioritized road development while mass transit plans remained on the drawing board. Trolleys and railways stimulated land development in the early twentieth century, but over time the city moved forward, and the mass transit network was no longer capable of following São Paulos urban sprawl. Californias Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) Review Panel releases its recommendations | NRDC
I had the honor of serving on the Panel, which concluded its work in December of 2010. The final recommendations were released this week. See: news release, recommendations, full list of documents. California is a leader among states in the nation to curb carbon pollution with strong near- and long-term emission reduction goals under its landmark law AB32, and supportive policies to promote energy efficiency, renewable energy, clean cars, low carbon fuels and smart growth, as well as its emissions performance standard for new baseload power. The states goals are realistic but ambitious. A number of tools and technologies will be needed for these goals to be met, and the Panels job was to examine the potential role of CCS more closely, identify barriers to its development and make recommendations for how to overcome them, if appropriate.. The Panel agreed that CCS is an important tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and that the technology exists to do this safely and effectively today. ...

Urban Development Ministry Wants Separate City Buses for Women
Cities with over 1 million population should consider providing separate city buses for women, the Ministry of Urban Development said.
Despite public misgivings, some planners and community activists say attached homes are exactly what the region needs. Without higher-density development, housing wont keep up with the rising population, they say. An ongoing housing shortage could escalate already-soaring home prices, locking low-and middle-income residents into a lifetime of renting.. The region needs more compact housing development, more vertical housing development, said Lynne Baker, who co-chairs the Housing Action Network.. There is more profit motive for estate homes, but the real demand is at the other end, for multifamily, said Baker, who is with the Endangered Habitats League.. Changing building patterns wont be easy, said Michael McLaughlin, planning director for the San Diego Association of Governments. The California tax structure makes it more profitable for cities to favor retail and commercial construction over residential projects, he said. Even with development impact fees, jurisdictions dont get enough ...
Houstons urban sprawl increased rainfall, flooding during Hurricane Harvey
Houstons urban landscape directly contributed to the torrential rainfall and deadly flooding experienced during Hurricane Harvey in August 2017, according to Princeton and University of Iowa researchers. The researchers report in the journal Nature Nov. 15 that Houstons risk for extreme flooding during the hurricane-a category 4 storm that caused an estimated $125 billion in damage and killed 68 people-was 21 times greater due to urbanization.

Arcade Fire - Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) - Polkadot
Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) is the new video from Arcade Fire album The Suburbs. But this is not the point. Beyond the traditional video ( watch it below), you can find an interactive version at www.sprawl2.com (webcam and broadband recommended): just dance and move your arms in front of the screen, and the quicker you move, the faster the frames play. You slow down, the caracters in the video slow down. You freeze and the video starts to loop on the beat, creating a new choreography in the choreography. A great work of the director Vincent Morisset who says: For a long time, Ive been wanting to do an interactive project without any interface. Something really primitive and fun. A web experience free of clicks or buttons. Two years ago, Régine told me that they would probably be a dancy song on The Suburbs that could fit with the idea. It ended up being Sprawl II. What an amazing song!.. ...

Urban Studies / City Planning / Housing. SAMPLE:. Large metropolitan areas are attractive to many due to the economic, educational and cultural opportunities available in these areas. During much of the 20th century and especially during economic downturns and recessions large amounts of people abandoned rural areas in search of opportunities that were available in large cities. They rarely took into account the discomforts and negative effects of urban sprawl, they were in a sense blinded and consumed by the promise of a better life that large cities offered. As certain members of the population become economically stable they seek to improve their quality of life, this is when they begin to notice the both the pros and cons associated with big city living. If they have a successful career and are economically ...

About health and urban development. There is growing recognition that the built urban environment has a significant influence on peoples health; a clear relationship has been drawn between the urban environment and a range of chronic diseases such as overweight and obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. The mental health of populations is also impacted by the environment. The negative health impacts of air, water, and land pollution and contamination have long been understood. There is also increasing recognition of the importance of ecological sustainability to population health.. Missing Teeth: The Economic Impact of Holes in the Urban Fabric
There are several contributors to this kind of decline. Most notable is the mid-twentieth century deindustrialization of the region, which was ignited when manufacturing and heavy industrial firms started to look to the southern United States (and overseas) for cheaper labor. This, coupled with the improvements in transportation that made certain geographic advantages (such as Pittsburghs location on three rivers or Clevelands vital connection to Lake Erie and her networks) obsolete, forced many mills and factories to close between 1960 and 1990.. The second most important contributor to the urban decline witnessed over the last several decades is suburbanization, or urban sprawl. As the entire country progressively shifted from walking and using trains and streetcars to the personal automobile, the built environment followed suit. Engineers and planners alike teamed up to mold old cities and build new ones that would accommodate the automobiles every need, such as mobility (in place of ...

Description. This is a seminar about the ways that urban design contributes to the distribution of political power and resources in cities. Design, in this view, is not some value-neutral aesthetic applied to efforts at urban development but is, instead, an integral part of the motives driving that development. The class investigates the nature of the relations between built form and political purposes through close examination of a wide variety of situations where public and private sector design commissions and planning processes have been clearly motivated by political pressures, as well as situations where the political assumptions have remained more tacit. We will explore cases from both developed and developing countries. This is a seminar about the ways that urban design contributes to the distribution of political power and resources in cities. Analysis of Urban Development Patterns, 1991-2001 | Neptis Foundation
Reporting the location of intensification by municipality and by submetropolitan zones defined by their dominant era of development is useful, but greater precision can be achieved by mapping the location of intensification at a finer grain, and by using spatial statistics that indicate the degree to which intensification is clustered. Figures 3.4, 3.5, and 3.6 map the location of intensification at the sub-municipal level for each metropolitan region. The size of each pink circle represents the number of dwelling units accommodated through intensification during the study period. DAs vary in size according to the population density: they tend to be larger in lower-density areas near the edge of the built-up urban area and smaller in more densely populated areas. As a result, each circle on the maps representing 100 dwellings shown near the perimeter of the urbanized area may be the equivalent of five closely packed circles, each representing 20 dwellings, located in high-density areas such as ...

Neural correlates of individual differences in affective benefit of real-life urban green space exposure | Nature Neuroscience
Psychiatric morbidity is high in cities, so identifying potential modifiable urban protective factors is important. We show that exposure to urban green space improves well-being in naturally behaving male and female city dwellers, particularly in districts with higher psychiatric incidence and fewer green resources. Higher green-related affective benefit was related to lower prefrontal activity during negative-emotion processing, which suggests that urban green space exposure may compensate for reduced neural regulatory capacity. Tost et al. show that urban green space exposure improves well-being, particularly in people dwelling in relatively deprived areas and showing less prefrontal activity during emotion processing, a neural signature that is linked to mental health risk.
