Image-based high-throughput plant phenotyping in greenhouse has the potential to relieve the bottleneck currently presented by phenotypic scoring which limits the throughput of gene discovery and crop improvement efforts. Numerous studies have employed automated RGB imaging to characterize biomass and growth of agronomically important crops. The objective of this study was to investigate the utility of hyperspectral imaging for quantifying chemical properties of maize and soybean plants in vivo. These properties included leaf water content, as well as concentrations of macronutrients nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and sulfur (S), and micronutrients sodium (Na), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), boron (B), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn). Hyperspectral images were collected from 60 maize and 60 soybean plants, each subjected to varying levels of either water deficit or nutrient limitation stress with the goal of creating a wide range of variation in the chemical properties

SIAMS inspection focuses on the impact of the Church schools Christian vision on pupils and adults. This involves looking at the schools Christian vision, the provision the school makes because of this vision and how effective this provision is in enabling all pupils to flourish. Church schools will employ a variety of strategies and styles appropriate to, and reflective of, their particular context in order to be distinctively and effectively Christian in their character and ethos. SIAMS inspectors therefore do not look for a set template of what a Church school should be like, but rather take the particular context of the school into account and base their evaluation on the outcomes rather than the process.. The Evaluation Schedule has one inspection question: how effective is the schools distinctive Christian vision, established and promoted by leadership at all levels, in enabling pupils and adults to flourish? This is explored through seven strands:. ...

My work is at the interface between behavior, ecology and evolutionary biology with a central focus on the extent to which populations are at adaptive equilibria with respect to their physical and biotic environments. These questions are pursued through genetic analyses of fitness-linked traits, through species optimum and game theoretic analyses and simulations, and through field manipulations and breeding experiments. Current work on the desert spider, Agelenopsis aperta, involves a quantitative genetic study of the effect of competitive interactions among conspecifics on the joint evolution of aggressiveness and body size. Aggressiveness is a social trait that is both a characteristic of an individual and of the environment. The results of a breeding experiment presented in Riechert and Johns (2005) suggested that while such factors as metabolic rate and assimilation efficiency are heritable, their effects on an individuals phenotype are overridden by behavioral aggressiveness which also is ...

Farmers in Bangladesh now have ways to lessen the damage that sheath blight can do to their rice crops. Sheath blight is a serious disease and difficult to detect. Due to better methods of detection, improved varieties of rice that are more resistant to blight (but still have good eating and cooking qualities), and simple biological control methods, farmers in the Comilla, Gazipur, Bogra and Rajshahi districts are already reaping better rice harvests. Agricultural organisations in Bangladesh use the new molecular techniques to detect rice sheath blight and develop better varieties. This will help combat the disease and make a major contribution to raising the countrys food production by a quarter within five years-an important government goal. Limnology is the study of inland waters - lakes (both freshwater and saline), reservoirs, rivers, streams, wetlands, and groundwater - as ecological systems interacting with their drainage basins and the atmosphere. The limnological discipline integrates the functional relationships of growth, adaptation, nutrient cycles, and biological productivity with species composition, and describes and evaluates how physical, chemical, and biological environments regulate these relationships.. The word limnology is derived from the Greek limne - marsh, pond and Latin limnaea - thing pertaining to a marsh. Stated simply, limnology is the study of the structural and functional interrelationships of organisms of inland waters as their dynamic physical, chemical, and biotic environments affect them.. Freshwater ecology is the study of the structure, function, and change of organisms in fresh waters as affected by their dynamic physical, chemical, and biotic environments. Saline waters (, 0.3% or 3 g per ...
Soil microorganisms and plants are key players in the production and breakdown of organic matter, and together control global biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. TER, the Division of Terrestrial Ecosystem Research, aims to advance our fundamental understanding of how plants and soil microorganisms respond to, and in turn shape, their abiotic and biotic environment, and to determine the consequences for the functioning of Earths ecosystems.. Primarily dedicated to basic research, TER addresses pressing environmental issues, such as the impact of climate and land-use change on ecosystem functioning and the role of soils in the global carbon cycle and in food security. In doing so, we work on scales from µm (i.e. the scale at which microbes operate) to the biosphere (i.e. where plant and microbial processes become evident), and in ecosystems spanning the Arctic tundra to tropical rainforests. We integrate this scale of thinking with state-of-the-art methods, including stable ...

Abstract. Proving "good" lower bounds on the size of the arithmetic formulas computing an explicit polynomial is one of the central themes in the study of algebraic complexity. But the best known lower bound on the size of an arithmetic formula computing an explicit polynomial is quadratic in the number of variables, due to Kalorkoti [SIAM J. Comp. 1985]. There hasnt been any progress on that front in the last 32 years. But in a surprising result, Raz [J. ACM 2013] showed that for any n and d where d is sub-logarithmic in n, constructing explicit tensors of high enough rank would imply superpolynomial lower bounds for general arithmetic formulas. We first give a new and arguably simpler proof of this connection. We do this by showing a structured depth reduction to depth four for arithmetic formulas. This is a simpler proof of the depth reduction results of Agrawal and Vinay [FOCS 2008], Koiran [TCS 2012], and Tavenas [MFCS 2013]. We also extend the result of Raz to homogeneous formulas. In ...

Ecosystems have a history of disturbance that influences the current composition of the ecosystem. Self-organization capacity in concert with natural selection and evolution results in an ecosystem that reflects past conditions and disturbances. Some organisms are more successful in relative stable conditions; some can only compete successfully in dynamic and ever-changing conditions. Disturbances (e.g., fires, floods, tides, seasons, and plate tectonics) periodically introduce forces that reset ecosystem structure at varying temporal and spatial scales. If a disturbance occurs that creates a large change in the abiotic or biotic environment, an ecosystem can cross a threshold which makes it unable to recover to its previous state. Examples include loss of soil fertility that cannot be restored, changes in water table levels that lead to desertification or wetland development, loss of a keystone species, and introduction of new diseases or species.. Human-managed systems typically lose ...

Source: The Times of India, New Delhi, November 22, 2009.. Switch to dual fuel next yr: The switch to dual fuel for vehicles, consisting of hydrogen and CNG, will happen by next year. "In the next 12-15 months, we expect the commercial usage of dual fuel across vehicles," said Pawan Goenka, president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and president of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M). Goenka was speaking on the sidelines of todays 4th Environment Friendly Vehicles Conference. The fuel mixture would consist of 10-15 per cent of hydrogen and the balance contributed by CNG. The move, spearheaded both by SIAM and the government, is aimed at reducing the emission of noxious oxides by CNG fuelled vehicles, and for better fuel combustion. Currently, around 2 million vehicles powered by CNG fuel operate in the country out of which Delhi has the highest population of CNG vehicles. Nucleic acid sequencing methods, which determine the order of nucleotides in DNA fragments, are rapidly progressing. These processes yield large quantities of sequence data--some of which is dynamic--that helps researchers understand how and why organisms function like they do. Sequencing also benefits epidemiological studies, such as the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of genetic and/or contagious diseases. Advanced sequencing technologies reveal valuable information about the time evolution of pathogen sequences. Because researchers can estimate how a mutation behaves under the pressure of natural selection, they are thus able to predict the impact of each mutation--in terms of survival and propagation--on the fitness of the pathogen in question. These predictions lend insight to infectious disease epistemology, pathogen evolution, and population dynamics. In a paper published earlier this month in the SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, Ryosuke Omori and Jianhong Wu develop an ...

The name Siem Reap literally means "Siam Defeated". These days, however, the only rampaging hordes are the tourists heading to the Angkor Archaeological Park. This once quaint village has become the largest boomtown and construction site in Cambodia. It is quite laid-back and a pleasant place to stay while touring the temples. It is a nice compromise between observing Cambodian life and enjoying the amenities of modern services and entertainment, thanks to a large expatriate community. Since Siem Reap is a major tourist destination, prices in some instances are higher than elsewhere in Cambodia. Expect to receive almost constant offers for motodop and tuk-tuk rides, along with everything else which drivers may be able to offer to you.
When getting nostalgic about our childhood, we may remember hopscotch, hide-and-go-seek or hanging out on the monkey bars. In I Declare War, a small brigade of 13-year-old kids instead concern themselves with the regulations of war. But as in real life, the rules are far too easily broken.Opening to an innocuous battle of team against team, fearless leader PK (Gage Munroe) is looking to take his side to victory once again. He is a skilled tactician, never content with anything less than success. But when a coup places power-hungry Skinner (Michael Friend) into the opposition post, the film takes a brutal turn.Soon, PKs best friend Kwon (Siam Yu) is taken hostage, while soldiers from both sides begin dropping like flies. The firefight becomes entirely real-kids begin unleashing live rounds, rather than the water balloons that were used previously. Each child brings with them a different objective-a wish to avenge fallen leaders, right past wrongs, or simply make friends. The battle inevitably ...

Abstract: We first point out several flaws in the recent paper {\it [R. Shefi, M. Teboulle: Rate of convergence analysis of decomposition methods based on the proximal method of multipliers for convex minimization, SIAM J. Optim. 24, 269--297, 2014]} that proposes two ADMM-type algorithms for solving convex optimization problems involving compositions with linear operators and show how some of the considered arguments can be fixed. Besides this, we formulate a variant of the ADMM algorithm that is able to handle convex optimization problems involving an additional smooth function in its objective, and which is evaluated through its gradient. Moreover, in each iteration we allow the use of variable metrics, while the investigations are carried out in the setting of infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. This algorithmic scheme is investigated from point of view of its convergence properties. Eupatorium serotinum, also known as late boneset or late thoroughwort, is a fall-blooming herbaceous plant native to North America. Eupatorium serotinum ranges throughout most of the eastern United States, found in every coastal state from Massachusetts to Texas and inland as far as Minnesota and Nebraska. There are reports of one small population in the Canadian Province of Ontario, and other reports of the species on the south side of the Río Grande in northern Mexico. Like other members of the genus Eupatorium, Eupatorium serotinum is about one to two meters (40-80 inches) tall and has inflorescences containing a large number of tiny white flower heads with 9-15 disc florets but no ray florets. Eupatorium serotinum grows in open sites (either dry or moist), and can hybridize with Eupatorium perfoliatum and other members of the genus Eupatorium. Unlike wind-pollinated plants in this genus, E. serotinum is pollinated by insects. "Eupatorium serotinum". NatureServe Explorer. NatureServe. ...

Siams Rama I (r. 1782-1809) began demanding obeisance from the Malayan rulers of Kedah, Patani, Kelantan, and Terengganu, and this provoked rebellions by Patani in 1789, 1791, and 1808. Needing food-producing land, in 1800 Penangs Lt. Governor George Leith gained more Kedah territory and renamed it Province Wellesley. Immigrants came to Penang, and free trade was allowed until 1802. Penang became the fourth British presidency after Bengal, Bombay, and Madras in 1805. Yet justice was handled informally by local leaders until a British court was established in 1807. Kedahs Sultan Ahmad (r. 1803-21) was installed by Siam, and in 1816 Bangkok ordered him to help them punish Perak for refusing to send tribute. In 1821 the Siamese army invaded Kedah and drove Sultan Ahmad to take refuge at Penang with the British, whom he criticized for not defending his state. The British had demolished the Melaka fort in 1809, but they did not restore the port to the Dutch until 1818.. Stamford Raffles was a ...

SIAM J. Computing 28 (2): 652-673, 1998. This paper presents an algorithm that finds multiple short paths connecting two terminals in a graph (allowing repeated vertices and edges in the paths) in constant time per path after a preprocessing stage dominated by a single-source shortest path computation. The paths it finds are the k shortest in the graph, where k is a parameter given as input to the algorithm. The k shortest paths problem has many important applications for finding alternative solutions to geographic path planning problems, network routing, hypothesis generation in computational linguistics, and sequence alignment and metabolic pathway finding in bioinformatics. Although there have been many papers on the k shortest paths problem before and after this one, it has become frequently cited in those application areas. Additionally, it marks a boundary in the theoretical study of the problem: prior theoretical work largely concerned how quickly the problem could be solved, a line of ...

Citrus Diseases Exotic to Florida: Citrus Tristeza Virus Stem Pitting (CTV-SP) 3 Vein chlorosis caused by Citrus tristeza virus-Stem Pitting (CTV-SP). As with decline isolates, CTV-SP isolates can be transmitted by budding and grafting. Long distance movement of CTV-SP to different countries or different areas within a region is usually via the movement of the infected budwood or nursery stock. CTV-SP is also transmitted by several species of aphids. The brown citrus aphid (Toxoptera citricida) is considered the most efficient vector, but the melon aphid (Aphis gossypii) and the spirea aphid (A. spiraecola) can also transmit the CTV-SP virus. The patterns of spread vary according to the type of aphids involved. CTV-SP problem often increases rapidly after the brown citrus aphid becomes established in a new area and it seems that CTV-SP isolates are transmitted more often by brown citrus aphid as compared to other aphids. CTV can be transmitted experimentally by stem slash inoculation of citrus ...
The melon (or cotton) aphid, Aphis gossypii, is distributed throughout most of the world. It has been reported to feed on 220 different crops, including many important vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes, cucurbits) and ornamentals (chrysanthemum, cineraria, begonia, hollyhock, Easter lily). It also infests many weed hosts such as amaranth, milkweed, lambs quarters, and grounsel. Melon aphid infestations can reduce crop vigor, yield, and quality. It is known to vector at least 50 plant viruses, some of which are important in vegetable crops ...
The standard view of adaptation to larval crowding in fruitflies, built on results from 25 years of multiple experimental evolution studies on Drosophila melanogaster, was that enhanced competitive ability evolves primarily through increased larval feeding and foraging rate, and increased larval tolerance to nitrogenous wastes, at the cost of efficiency of food conversion to biomass. These results were at odds from the predictions of classical K-selection theory, notably the expectation that selection at high density should result in the increase of efficiency of conversion of food to biomass, and were better interpreted through the lens of α-selection. We show here that populations of D. ananassae and D. n. nasuta subjected to extreme larval crowding evolve greater competitive ability and pre-adult survivorship at high density, primarily through a combination of reduced larval duration, faster attainment of minimum critical size for pupation, greater time efficiency of food conversion to ...
Our results suggest that individual differences in competitive ability may be explained by two sources of behavioural variation: a heritable personality trait (exploration behaviour) and a repeatable cognitive trait (innovative problem-solving). In males, competitive ability was itself repeatable and correlated positively with both dominance rank and exploration behaviour, but negatively with problem-solving performance. The repeatability of competitive ability was assessed over a short time period, and only among those individuals that visited the feeder on consecutive days. The stability of competitive ability over longer time periods and in different social or physical conditions is unknown, though we note that exploration behaviour and problem-solving performance are repeatable in our population over years [41,50], suggesting that competitive ability may also be stable over longer time periods. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that a repeatable measure of competitive ability ...
Conclusions and Recommendations. The study revealed that three viruses, TMV, begomovirus and TEV, were associated with viral disease outbreaks in tomato in Trinidad in 2003. The other viruses tested for (CMV, PVY, PLRV, and TSWV) were not detected, which indicates that that they were absent, occurred at too low a frequency or in titers too low to be detected by the sampling and/or testing method employed in this study. As this survey was conducted only in the dry season and in a single year (2003), a role for the other viruses in tomato viral disease in Trinidad cannot be ruled out. The results indicated an overall high incidence of begomovirus infection. This suggests that begomovirus(es) may be the most important viral pathogen in tomato in Trinidad. As there no detected weed hosts of begomovirus (PYMTV) detected in Trinidad (16), it is likely that infected tomato plants are the primary inoculum source for begomovirus. This is also supported by a failure to detect virus infection in ...
Boneset, also known as Thoroughwort, Agueweed, Indian Sage, and Feverwort, has historically been known for its role as a folk remedy. Boneset was used by Native Americans to treat a variety of ailments including sore throat, fever, chills, irregular menstrual cycle, epilepsy, gonorrhea, kidney trouble, and to induce vomiting, to cure snakebites, to expel worms (Innvista 2007), and to treat colds and flu, especially in the eastern United States (Klenner 1971, Innvista 2007). Usually, a tea with a very bitter taste would be made from the Eupatorium perfoliatum. When consumed the results were an overnight cure of the disease. Farmers commonly had a supply of dried boneset on hand in order to treat their cold or flu (Klenner 1971). Boneset is said to be antiviral, antibacterial, anti-parasitic, a sweat promoter, a febrifuge, a decongestant, a mild laxative, a mucous membrane tonic, an immunostimulant, a smooth muscle relaxant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, a mild emetic, a peripheral circulatory ...
