Vitamin E
A generic descriptor for all TOCOPHEROLS and TOCOTRIENOLS that exhibit ALPHA-TOCOPHEROL activity. By virtue of the phenolic hydrogen on the 2H-1-benzopyran-6-ol nucleus, these compounds exhibit varying degree of antioxidant activity, depending on the site and number of methyl groups and the type of ISOPRENOIDS.
Tocopherols
A collective name for a group of closely related lipids that contain substitutions on the 2H-1-benzopyran-6-ol nucleus and a long hydrocarbon chain of isoprenoid units. They are antioxidants by virtue of the phenolic hydrogen. Tocopherols react with the most reactive form of oxygen and protect unsaturated fatty acids from oxidation.

Zalcitabine
A dideoxynucleoside compound in which the 3'-hydroxy group on the sugar moiety has been replaced by a hydrogen. This modification prevents the formation of phosphodiester linkages which are needed for the completion of nucleic acid chains. The compound is a potent inhibitor of HIV replication at low concentrations, acting as a chain-terminator of viral DNA by binding to reverse transcriptase. Its principal toxic side effect is axonal degeneration resulting in peripheral neuropathy.

Alpha Particles
Neutrons
Electrically neutral elementary particles found in all atomic nuclei except light hydrogen; the mass is equal to that of the proton and electron combined and they are unstable when isolated from the nucleus, undergoing beta decay. Slow, thermal, epithermal, and fast neutrons refer to the energy levels with which the neutrons are ejected from heavier nuclei during their decay.

A novel push-pull Diels-Alder diene: reactions of 4-alkoxy- or 4-phenylsulfenyl-5-chalcogene-substituted 1-phenylpenta-2,4-dien-1-one with electron-deficient dienophiles. (1/16)
5-(phenylselenenyl)- and 5-(phenylsulfenyl)-4-ethoxy-1-phenyl-2,4-pentadien-1-ones (2) and (3) underwent [4+2] cycloaddition with N-methyl and N-phenylmaleimides and successive isomerization to give the 7-benzoyl-3a,4,5,7a-tetrahydro-1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-diones 5, 8 and 9 in good yields. The 4-ethoxy group on the 2,4-pentadien-1-one was found to be effective to facilitate the cycloaddition with dienophiles. We also performed other [4+2] cycloadditions of 2,4-pentadien-1-ones with DMAD or naphthoquinone. (+info)Redox catalysts as sensitisers towards oxidative stress. (2/16)
The predominance of oxidative stress in many tumour cell environments provides a means to selectively target these cells via protein oxidation. The zinc fingers of transcription factors utilise cysteine thiols for structural zinc coordination. Redox control of DNA binding regulates transcription and therefore the overall rates of proliferation, apoptosis and necrosis in the carcinoma. We report here the adverse effects of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) mimics towards zinc finger motifs and PC12 cell survival. Nanomolar catalyst concentrations facilitated H2O2-induced oxidation of an Sp1 transcription factor fragment. In PC12 cells GPx catalysis triggered a significant increase in cell death, correlating with severity of oxidative stress. As a consequence, we conclude that GPx mimics are potential chemotherapeutic agents. (+info)Synthesis and properties of benzo[a]phenoxazinium chalcogen analogues as novel broad-spectrum antimicrobial photosensitizers. (3/16)
The goal of this investigation was to develop improved photosensitizers for use as antimicrobial drugs in photodynamic therapy of localized infections. Replacement of the oxygen atom in 5-(ethylamino)-9-diethylaminobenzo[a]phenoxazinium chloride (1) with sulfur and selenium afforded thiazinium and selenazinium analogues 2 and 3, respectively. All three dyes are water soluble, lipophilic, and red light absorbers. The relative photodynamic activities of the chalcogen series were evaluated against a panel of prototypical pathogenic microorganisms: the Gram-positive Enterococcus faecalis, the Gram-negative Escherichia coli, and the fungus Candida albicans. Selenium dye 3 was highly effective as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial photosensitizer with fluences of 4-32 J/cm2 killing 2-5 more logs of all cell types than sulfur dye 2, which was slightly more effective than oxygen analogue 1. These data, taken with the findings of uptake and retention studies, suggest that the superior activity of selenium derivative 3 can be attributed to its much higher triplet quantum yield. Post-transition metal
Aluminium sometimes is[77] or is not[3] counted as a post-transition metal. It has a well shielded [Ne] noble gas core rather than the less well shielded [Ar]3d10, [Kr]4d10 or [Xe]4f145d10 core of the post-transition metals. The small radius of the aluminium ion combined with its high charge make it a strongly polarizing species, prone to covalency.[78] Aluminium in pure form is a soft metal (MH 3.0) with low mechanical strength.[79] It has a close-packed structure (BCN 12) showing some evidence of partially directional bonding.[80][n 10] It has a low melting point and a high thermal conductivity. Its strength is halved at 200 °C, and for many of its alloys is minimal at 300 °C.[82] The latter three properties of aluminium limit its use to situations where fire protection is not required,[83] or necessitate the provision of increased fire protection.[84][n 11] It bonds covalently in most of its compounds;[88] has an amphoteric oxide; and can form anionic aluminates.[60] Aluminium forms Zintl ...
