Haplometra cylindracea (Zeder, 1800) (Trematoda:Plagiorchiidae): variation in the dates of cercarial shedding for overwintering Galba truncatula. (6/21)

Natural infections of Galba truncatula with Haplometra cylindracea were followed from 2001 to 2009 to determine if their characteristics were similar when snails came from water collections frequented by Bufo bufo or by frogs and newts for their egg-laying. Snail samples were collected from both types of sites to count shed cercariae for three days and also free cercariae when snails were dissected. In sites only frequented by B. bufo, cercarial shedding occurred earlier than in those colonized by frogs and newts (March instead of April-May). In contrast, the number of cercariae shed during three successive days was significantly higher in May. This variation in the dates of cercarial shedding might be due, either to a synchronism between cercaria-releasing snails and the presence of the definitive host (tadpoles) in water collections, or to an earlier infection of overwintering snails in autumn by H. cylindracea miracidia in the case of toad-frequented sites.  (+info)

Advanced temperature modulation techniques now allow for the elimination of fever as well as controlled hypothermia. However, as demonstrated in this study, shivering is frequently encountered (64%), and the severity of shivering as measured by the BSAS is strongly associated with graded increases in systemic metabolism. The application of therapeutic normothermia or hypothermia has not been shown to improve outcome after cerebrovascular injury, and the metabolic consequences of shivering may prove to be a limiting step in demonstrating the benefits of therapeutic temperature modulation. A scale that can simply and reliably detect and quantify shivering can be used as an end point for antishivering interventions and may play an important role in minimizing the day-to-day complications of cerebrovascular patients undergoing therapeutic temperature modulation in the intensive care unit.. Previous reports have considered shivering to be a binary event;8-10 however, the metabolic impact of shivering ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Role of growth hormone in regulating T‐Dependent immune events in aged, nude, and transgenic rodents. AU - Davila, D. R.. AU - Brief, S.. AU - Simon, J.. AU - Hammer, Robert E. AU - Brinster, R. L.. AU - Kelley, K. W.. PY - 1987. Y1 - 1987. N2 - Growth hormone (GH) appears to play a major role in a reciprocal axis that has been postulated between the thymus and pituitary glands. Our previous studies showed that thymic structure, as well as T‐cell proliferation and IL‐2 synthesis, could be restored in aged female Wistar‐Furth rats by the implantation of GH3 pituitary adenoma cells. These cells secrete GH and some prolactin. We have now used three different approaches to determine whether GH affects a variety of immune events in vivo in both old and young rodents, and whether GH3 cells can directly affect progenitor T‐cells in nude rats that congenitally lack a thymus gland. To test the effects of GH in aged rats, 750 μg of pituitary‐derived ovine GH was injected 2× ...
Background: There is increasing recognition of complex interrelations between the endocrine functions of bone and fat tissues or organs. Objective: The objective was to describe nonmechanical and mechanical links between metabolic factors, body composition, and bone with the use of graphical Markov models. Methods: Seventy postmenopausal women with a mean ± SD age of 62.3 ± 3.7 y and body mass index (in kg/m2) of 24.9 ± 3.8 were recruited. Bone outcomes were peripheral quantitative computed tomography measures of the distal and diaphyseal tibia, cross-sectional area (CSA), volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), and cortical CSA. Biomarkers of osteoblast and adipocyte function were plasma concentrations of leptin, adiponectin, osteocalcin, undercarboxylated osteocalcin (UCOC), and phylloquinone. Body composition measurements were lean and percent fat mass, which were derived with the use of a 4-compartment model. Sequences of Regressions, a subclass of graphical Markov models, were used to ...

In this study, we monitored the response of murine astrocytes and microglia after in vitro exposure to several Trichobilharzia regenti derived stimulants. Apart from its importance as the causative agent of cercarial dermatitis in humans [11], T. regenti is of a high interest just due to neuropathological manifestation of bird and mammalian infections [16]. However, the immune response in the CNS of infected mice has so far been described only by histopathological or immunohistochemical methods [17, 20, 21]. Since tissue inflammation correlating with presence of the parasite and axonal damage was observed in infected mice as early as seven dpi [17], we primarily focused on detection of proinflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide. These factors are known to be produced by activated astrocytes and microglia and may contribute to pathological processes [26-29].. Trichobilharzia regenti schistosomula appear in the murine CNS as soon as two dpi and persist there up to 3-4 weeks being localized ...
Within the recent resurgence of brachytherapy as treatment for prostate cancer, many new devices have been conceived in the preparation of surgical brachytherapy equipment. Specifically, this work encompasses the automated preparation of preloaded surgical brachytherapy applicators or needles through the loading of radioactive seed elements and benign spacer elements. While traditionally a manual operation, current device methodology in this application revolves around semi-automatic mechanical interaction within the element loading procedure. Mechanical interaction can subject elements to damage, specifically seed elements due to thin metallic construct. Damage to elements within a loading system can result in failure of the performed brachytherapy treatment causing potential harm to the patient. Hesitancy in acceptance of these mechanical separation element loading devices can be attributed to the failure nature of these devices. This work seeks to solve the current issue of element damage ...

Concomitant immunity is a phenomenon in which a tumour-bearing host is resistant to the growth of an implanted secondary tumour. Metastases are considered to be secondary tumours that develop spontaneously during primary tumour growth, suggesting the involvement of concomitant immunity in controlling the rise of metastases. It has been demonstrated that B-1 cells, a subset of B-lymphocytes found predominantly in pleural and peritoneal cavities, not only increase the metastatic development of murine melanoma B16F10, but also are capable of differentiating into mononuclear phagocytes, modulating inflammatory responses in wound healing, in oral tolerance and in Paracoccidiose brasiliensis infections. Here, we studied B-1 cells participation in concomitant immunity during Ehrlich tumour progression. Our results show that B-1 cells obtained from BALB/c mice previously injected with Ehrlich tumour in the footpad were able to protect BALB/c and BALB/Xid mice against Ehrlich tumour challenge. in ...
Residents of Lakeshore will no longer find fluoride in their tap water.. Town council unanimously decided Monday to stop adding it at the Stoney Point water treatment plant, effective immediately.. Mayor Tom Bain says peoples teeth should be fine.. There is no need for any concern … theres plenty of fluoride in toothpaste.- Tom Bain, Lakeshore mayor. There is no need for any concern. Council had a report from our administrative group that recommended doing that, based on the fact that if youre using toothpaste, theres plenty of fluoride in the toothpaste and in fact there could be health concerns if a person gets too much fluoride, Bain said.. However, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Allen Heimann said fluoride should not be taken out of public water.. I think it would be beneficial for all of the water be fluoridated, he said. It is still recognized as an effective public initiative.. Heimann said fluoride in water is more effective than toothpaste because water is routinely ...

A method in one example implementation includes receiving information related to a network access attempt on a first computing device with the information identifying a software program file associated with the network access attempt. The method also includes evaluating a first criterion to determine whether network traffic associated with the software program file is permitted and then creating a restriction rule to block the network traffic if the network traffic is not permitted. The first criterion includes a trust status of the software program file. In specific embodiments, the method includes pushing the restriction rule to a network protection device that intercepts the network traffic associated with the software program file and applies the restriction rule to the network traffic. In more specific embodiments, the method includes searching a whitelist identifying trustworthy software program files to determine the trust status of the software program file.

This paper presents a new approach to the improvement of informal settlements through limited physical interventions. The main argument in this research is that the benefits of the transformation of urban fabric should be evaluated by a deeper level of interaction between spatial configuration and socio-economic dynamics. The theoretical foundation of this claim is driven from previous research that indicate the significant role of spatial configuration in the gradual self-improvement of informal settlements. A direct implication of such findings is that limited physical interventions as a design method can be used to facilitate the self improvement of informal settlements by increasing their spatial integration to the whole of the city. Furthermore, the transformation of strategically located unplanned areas can also create a positive impact on the urban areas that surround them.. Download the full paper. ...

Brown ditch drains wetlands between three parallel ridges of sand dunes near the East Unit of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Poter County, Indiana. Dune and lacustrine sands form a surficial aquifer that is the source of base flow to the ditch. Profiles established in July and August 1982 show that the average streambed slope of the ditch in the Lakeshore (0.19 percent) is six times that of the upstream east reach in the adjacent town, The Pines (0.03 percent). Although the ditch contains debris and vegetation, the reach in the Lakeshore seems to convey all the base flow it receives. In contrast, the upstream east arm contains several ponded sections where flow is sluggish. Digital model simulations show that dredging to form a uniformly graded streambed and eliminate ponding in the upstream east arm of the ditch south of The Pines could lower the water table 0.2 to 2.0...

There is some debate as to how safe it is to give multiple vaccinations at one time. Similar to the controversy with human vaccinations, there is a percentage of people (both the general public and in the veterinary community) who believe that vaccinations against multiple illnesses at one time can be detrimental to your dogs health. These people believe that puppies immune systems are not matured until 6 months of age. Before this, puppies are protected by their mothers antibodies. A mother dogs antibodies last for varied periods of time depending on the disease and the individual dog. This means that six-week-old puppies receiving the DHPP vaccination may still be protected by their mothers antibodies. Maternal antibodies render a vaccination ineffective because they fight the injected illness rather than promote the development of antibodies in the puppys own body. To be effective, vaccines must be given after maternal antibodies are no longer present in a puppys system so the puppy ...

The recognition that the majority of ACS evolve from only mildly to moderately obstructive atherosclerotic plaques led to an appreciation of nonmechanical factors contributing to the clinical manifestations of coronary artery disease.1 2 3 Our finding that an unusual subset of T lymphocytes, CD4+CD28null T cells, is expanded in patients with UA but not in patients with SA suggests that these cells are involved in the acute events complicating otherwise stable and slowly progressive coronary disease. This T-cell population breaks several rules that apply to classic CD4 helper T cells.21 CD4+CD28null T cells contain monoclonal T-cell populations that persist over time at a large clonal size. Sequence homologies of TCR β-chains isolated from clones of multiple patients support the notion that these clones are expanded in response to exogenous antigen(s) common to patients with UA. CD4+CD28null T-cell clonotypes are accumulated in lesions with plaque rupture, suggesting that they are involved in ...

Long ago, along the Wisconsin shoreline, a mother bear and her two cubs were driven into Lake Michigan by a raging forest fire. The bears swam for many hours, but eventually the cubs tired and lagged behind. Mother bear reached the shore and climbed to the top of a high bluff to watch and wait for her cubs. Too tired to continue, the cubs drowned within sight of the shore. The Great Spirit Manitou created two islands to mark the spot where the cubs disappeared and then created a solitary dune to represent the faithful mother bear.. ...

Masindi Port is a town in Uganda. Masindi Port is in Kiryandongo District in western Uganda on the western banks of the Victoria Nile, approximately 197 kilometres (122 mi), by road, northwest of Kampala, Ugandas capital and largest city. This is approximately 39 kilometres (24 mi), by road, south of Kiryandongo, the district capital. The coordinates of the town are 1°4154.0N, 32°0440.0E (Latitude:1.6983;, 32.0778). Masindi Port was a busy river boat docking station during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Steamboats were a major mode of transport on the Nile River. Because of the Karuma Falls and the Murchison Falls on the Victoria Nile between Lake Kyoga and Lake Albert, steamboats could not navigate that part of the Nile. Passengers would travel by boat from Lake Victoria, down the Victoria Nile into Lake Kyoga. They would then disembark at Masindi Port and travel by land to Butiaba, a port on Lake Albert, where they would resume their water journey downstream the Nile. With the ...

Author Summary Schistosomiasis japonica, a chronic human parasitic disease in the Peoples Republic of China, the Philippines and areas of Indonesia, is a zoonosis with over 40 different mammals, including a number of ruminants, that can act as reservoir hosts for the infection. Precise identification of the major infection reservoirs is important for the control of Schistosoma japonicum as their targeted treatment can prevent environmental contamination and transmission of the parasite, thus reducing the risk to humans. Current copro-parasitological techniques are generally unsatisfactory for identifying and quantifying S. japonicum eggs in ruminant feces due to the large volume of cellulosic debris present. The new approach we describe here, the FEA-SD technique, removes much of this material by sieving and centrifugation with ethyl actate and renders any remaining debris transparent by use of a potassium hydroxide (KOH) digestion, providing much improved visualization of eggs, enabling the collection
Wednesday December 12, 2007 Credits Barbara Damon-Day for her determination to spare other military families distress about possible health risks to their loved ones. Washington, D.C. (Wednesday, December 12, 2007)---U.S. Representative Tom Allen announced today that the House-Senate conference report on the defense authorization bill for Fiscal Year 2008 includes his amendment directing the Department of Defense to assess policies governing vaccinations given to military personnel. Representative Allen drafted the amendment in response to concerns about the possibility of serious health impacts from multiple vaccinations raised by one of his constituents, Barbara Damon-Day of Newcastle, Maine. Mrs. Damon-Day has been an outspoken advocate for such a policy assessment since her son, Captain Patrick Damon, died suddenly of undetermined causes in Bagram, Afghanistan during deployment with the 240th Engineer Group of the Maine National Guard. Compiled by Ryan Brady and Dick Verch, May 2007. (899kb pdf). The Chequamegon Bay area is among the best birding locations in Wisconsin. Situated along the south shore of Lake Superior, the bay is a unique landscape feature that forms a central point for a diversity of habitats, including open water, mudflats, coastal wetlands, open fields, pine barrens, and varied forest types. As a result, the bay area hosts a wide variety of bird species that depend on these habitats during the breeding, migration, and winter seasons. Abundant public lands and extraordinary natural beauty further provide visitors with unparalleled bird watching opportunities in this exceptional area of northern Wisconsin.. This checklist includes more than 300 bird species observed at least once in the Chequamegon Bay area since 1972. The list applies to areas of Ashland, Bayfield, and Iron Counties within a 40-mile radius of the city of Ashland, Wisconsin, and includes species observed by or reported to the authors.. ...
The State of Michigan Natural Rivers Program mandates certain development restrictions that are specific to the Huron River. The Huron River and its tributaries are public domain, and are subject to public trust protection. The 1970 Michigan Natural Rivers Act (Act 231) designated the stretch of river between Kent Lake Dam and Barton Pond (27.5 miles) as country-scenic river. This Natural Rivers District includes a protected zone of 400 feet on either side of the natural watermark. In this protected zone, development is strictly limited and the natural vegetation strip has been increased. On private lands within the District, zoning also requires extensive building structure and septic system set-backs on both the rivers main stem and the tributaries. In the Natural Rivers District of the Huron River, no new commercial, industrial, or extractive development is permitted within 300 feet of the river or its tributaries.. Sexual size dimorphisms are a common feature in living organisms. The broad horned flour beetle (Gnathocerus cornutus) exhibits a pronounced sexual size dimorphism of the mandibles. It has been shown that enlarged mandibles in males are used in regular fights among males. While this behaviour is well-studied, the developmental basis of exaggerated mandible growth in males is not understood to date. We will apply comparative transcriptomics in combination with a comprehensive developmental characterization of mandible growth to identify key candidate genes involved in this process. Subsequently, candidate genes will be functionally tested via gene knock-down using RNA interference (RNAi). ...
methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, Ecstasy) is a popular drug of abuse among young people that can induce adverse effects. However, these effects lack a specific pattern, as consumption quantities are not correlated with the initiation and severity of the injury. MDMA can cause drug-induced liver injury (DILI). Two suggested pathways that play ... read more a role in the onset of DILI are direct hepatotoxicity due to toxic metabolites and adverse immune responses. Therefore, we studied MDMA interactions with phase I and II enzymes and the possible alteration of immune events in several in vitro systems (human liver (THLE) cells transfected with individual CYP450, rat liver microsomes, human PXR-mediated CYP3A4-reporter gene assay, rat primary hepatocytes, HepG2, THP-1 and PBMC). Our data suggests that not only CYP2D6 but also CYP3A4 plays an important role in MDMA bioactivation. Furthermore,MDMA alone or in combination with other therapeutic drugs inhibited CYP3A catalytic activity. This ...

Patients lost to follow up (LTFU) from treatment are a major concern for tuberculosis (TB) programmes. It is even more challenging in programmes in urban informal settlements (slums) with large, highly mobile, impoverished populations. Kibera, on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya is such a community with an estimated population of 500,000 to 700,000. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), in collaboration with the Kenyan Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation (MPHS), operate three clinics providing integrated TB, HIV and primary health care. We undertook a retrospective study between July 2006 and December 2008 to determine the rate of LTFU from the TB programme in Kibera and to assess associated clinical and socio-demographic factors. Thanks to an innovative Defaulter Tracing Programme, patients who missed their appointments were routinely traced and encouraged to return for treatment. Where possible, reasons for missed appointments were recorded. LTFU occurred in 146 (13%) of the 1094 patients ...

Digestive physiology is one of the bottlenecks of octopus aquaculture. Although there are successful experimentally formulated feeds, knowledge of the digestive physiology of cephalopods is fragmented, and focused mainly on O. vulgaris. Considering that the digestive physiology could vary in tropical and sub-tropical species through temperature modulations of the digestive dynamics and nutritional requirements of different organisms, the present review was focused on the digestive physiology timing of O. maya and O. mimus, two promising aquaculture species living in tropical (22 - 30°C) and sub-tropical (15 - 24°C) ecosystems, respectively. We provide a detailed description of how soluble and complex nutrients are digested, absorbed and assimilated in these species, describing the digestive process and providing insight into how the environment can modulate the digestion and final use of nutrients for these and presumably other octopus species. To date, research on these octopus species has
