There is developing interest in cave aerosols due to the increasing awareness of their impacts on the cave environment and speleothem; this paper provides the first attempt to synthesize the issues. Processes of cave aerosol introduction, transport, deposition, distribution and incorporation are explored, and reviewed from existing literature. Key issues of specific aerosol processes of distribution and production as well as cave location and morphology effects are highlighted through the presentation of preliminary monitoring data. This study identifies the strong relationship between cave ventilation, cave aerosols and their consequent spatial distribution. The contribution of cave aerosol deposition to speleothem geochemistry is modelled and evaluated using a mass balance framework. As an example, speleothem trace element data from Obir Cave (Austria) are compared with aerosol inputs to evaluate their significance. The mass balance study demonstrates that generally, under normal continuous ...
The diversity of cave crickets (Orthoptera, Rhaphidophoridae) remarkably differs between geographic regions in Anatolia. While only 4 species are distributed in northern Anatolia where Black Sea climate prevails, 14 species are found throughout southern and western Anatolia where the Mediterranean climate is dominant. However, no cave crickets were reported from the middle and eastern Anatolia where the continental climate is present. There is no data-based study on the distribution pattern of cave cricket species in Anatolia. This study aimed to reveal any possible relation between climatic conditions and distribution of cave crickets in three caves selected as representatives for three climate types present in Anatolia. Temperature and relative humidity in the ecological zones of the given caves and the surface were periodically measured by using data loggers. Our data show within cave variations in temperature and relative humidity among all three caves: (i) variations in temperature and ...
Situated on the coast about 3 miles south south east of Whithorn, the cave is well signposted and easy to find. The cave is either sign posted St Ninians Cave or Physgill. From the main road, a side road leads to Kidsdale and the car park for the cave. Fee 20p. Then a 1,5 mile walk to the cave takes one down the beautiful, wooded valley, bluebell lined, with a stream called Physgill. A short walk along the pebble beach, brings one to the cave which is 40 feet long, 15 feet high and 10 feet wide and formed along a fault line in the Lower Silurian greywacke. It is open to daylight. A torch is not required. The cave is traditionally associated with St Ninian who came from Ireland in the 8th century to convert the heathen Scots to Christianity. This is confirmed by the many stone crosses which were first discovered in the cave in 1871 and later in 1884 when the cave was excavated by Maxwell. Most of the stone crosses had been removed and are in the Museum at Whithorn. We did find a few small ones ...

Despite the lack of photosynthetically-fixed carbon, the Movile Cave ecosystem (43.825487 N; 28.560677 E, located near Mangalia, Romania and situated 21 m below ground) hosts a diverse range of invertebrates (worms, insects, spiders and crustaceans) that are adapted to life in the dark. Life within this ecosystem is supported by chemoautotrophic primary producers that derive energy from the oxidation of inorganic compounds such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and methane (CH4) that enter the cave with thermal fluids, analogous to hydrothermal vents [1, 2]. This hypogenic cave ecosystem, devoid of any input from the surface due to layers of impermeable clays and loess, has been isolated from the surface for ~ 5.5 million years and the majority of the invertebrate species present are endemic to Movile Cave and surrounding aquifers. Cave formation, features, and previous work on Movile Cave microbiology has been previously reviewed in detail [3]. Briefly, the pH (7.4) of lake water in the cave and the ...
In this process, Macalady and her team discovered a previously unknown form of biofilm growing in the oxygen-deficient portion of the lake. The cave explorers had seen these strange biofilms, says Macalady. So we asked them if they could get us a sample. The Frasassi cave system is located north of Rome and south of Venice in the Marche region. These limestone caves are like New Mexicos Carlsbad Caverns and Lechuguilla Cave, but in those caves, sulfur entered the caves from oil and gas reserves, while in Italy, the sulfur source is a thick gypsum layer below. Having sulfur in the environment allows sulfur-using organisms to grow. The researchers received about the weight of two paper clips of the strange rope to analyze. They reported the results of their DNA sequencing today (December 19) at the American Geophysical Union Conference in San Francisco. We did not retrieve any sequences for known methane-producing organisms or known methane oxidizers, says Macalady. The researchers did find ...
Caves are semi-closed ecosystems that experience the absence of sunlight and often, poor organic matter conditions due to physical isolation. Therefore, microbial activity is a crucial factor for sustaining life in caves. However, the heterogeneity of microbial diversity and community structure in relation to different types of habitats in karstic caves (e.g., drip water residue, mineral deposits, rock varnish) remains largely unknown. In this study, cave deposit samples in various morphology were analyzed to reveal its bacterial and archaeal diversity of Insuyu Cave in Burdur Province that is located in central Turkey. Illumina MiSeq sequencing of seven cave deposit samples (S1-S7) from the zones with a diverse array of environmental conditions revealed a total of four bacterial phyla including (1) Proteobacteria ranging from 80.20% to 98.72%, (2) Actinobacteria ranging from 0.23-13.03%, (3) Firmicutes ranging from 0.18 to 12.61% and (4) Bacteroidetes ranging from 0.00% to 3.80%, while none of ...

The Venerable Anthony is credited with founding the monastery when he settled in one of the caves that is now part of the Far Caves (also called the Caves of Theodosius). This occurred most probably in the year 1051 which is the traditional date for the foundation of the Kiev-Pechersk Monastery. As the community grew to twelve monks new cells were excavated. Among those who joined Anthony in the early years were Theodosius and the Venerable Barlaam. In 1057, Anthony, who desired a life of seclusion, named Barlaam as the first hegumen (abbot) and withdrew from the community to new cave in a hill that today is part of the Near Caves (also called the Caves of Anthony). During the early times when Theodosius was abbot (1062-1074), a wooden structure was built over the Far Caves and the brethren, whose number was reaching one hundred, moved out of the caves. As the monastery grew the need for rules that would govern the life of the community was recognized. Theodosius decided to use the statute of ...
The transition from the Middle Stone Age (MSA) to the Later Stone Age (LSA) in South Africa was not associated with the appearance of anatomically modern humans and the extinction of Neandertals, as in the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition in Western Europe. It has therefore attracted less attention, yet it provides insights into patterns of technological evolution not associated with a new hominin. Data from Border Cave (KwaZulu-Natal) show a strong pattern of technological change at approximately 44-42 ka cal BP, marked by adoption of techniques and materials that were present but scarcely used in the previous MSA, and some novelties. The agent of change was neither a revolution nor the advent of a new species of human. Although most evident in personal ornaments and symbolic markings, the change from one way of living to another was not restricted to aesthetics. Our analysis shows that: (i) at Border Cave two assemblages, dated to 45-49 and ,49 ka, show a gradual abandonment of the ...
Dos Ojos (from Spanish meaning Two Eyes; officially Sistema Dos Ojos) is a flooded cave system located north of Tulum, on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The exploration of Dos Ojos began in 1987 and still continues. The surveyed extent of the cave system is 82 kilometers (51 mi)[1] and there are 28 known sinkhole entrances, which are locally called cenotes.. Dos Ojos lies broadly parallel to and north of the Sac Actun cave system. Dos Ojos has remained in the top ten, if not the top three, longest underwater cave systems in the world since the late 1980s.[2] Dos Ojos contains the deepest known cave passage in Quintana Roo with 119.1 meters (391 ft) of depth located at The Pit discovered in 1996 by cave explorers who came all the way from the main entrance some 1,500 meters (4,900 ft) away. The deep passages include the Wakulla Room, the Beyond Main Base (BMB) passage, Jills room and The Next Generation passage. In August 2012 Dos ...
The Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, is a unique model system consisting of cave-adapted and surface-dwelling morphotypes which diverged ,1My ago. This remarkable natural experiment has enabled powerful genetic analyses of cave adaptation. Here, we describe the application of next-generation sequencing technology to the creation of a high-density linkage map. Our map comprises over 2200 markers populating 25 linkage groups constructed from genotypic data generated from a single genotyping-by-sequencing project. We leveraged emergent genomic and transcriptomic resources to anchor hundreds of anonymous Astyanax markers to the genome of the zebrafish (Danio rerio), the most closely related model organism to our study species. This facilitated the identification of 784 distinct connections between our linkage map and the Danio rerio genome, highlighting several regions of conserved genomic architecture between the two species despite ~150My of divergence. Using a Mendelian cave-associated trait as ...

The observations from the recent period revealed that the Western Carpathians, a part of the Carpathian mountain chain, is the northernmost region in Europe with the occurrence of the obligate cave fauna. The collembolan genus Pseudosinella Schäffer, 1897 is a polyphyletic taxon derived from the genus Lepidocyrtus Bourlet, 1839 from which it differs in reduced number of eyes. It covers about 350 species with predominantly Holarctic distribution of which about 39% are confined to caves. We studied the morphology and molecular traits to identify cave species of the genus Pseudosinella occupying the Western Carpathian caves and clarify their phylogenetic relationships. Based on morphological traits we hypothesized that Pseudosinella aggtelekiensis (Stach, 1929) and P. paclti Rusek, 1961 are descendants of the different phyletic lineages, the former species lacking morphologically related edaphic species. On the other hand, several species related to P. paclti were found in caves, superficial subterranean
Lets see, quick update. Wal Mart is not being built over the cave. The land is being sold to another company and the store is being built closer to I-75 however the permit is on hold in the DOT for a study that should take around a year. Wal Mart is going to build a green store there and it should be OK. The actual land that runs over the cave has been broken into three sites that will each have to be permitted seperately. The City of High Springs, the Santa Fe Springs working group, the NSS and a few individuals are monitoring the type of stores, permitting etc. Hopefully it will all come out all right. My main deal was to make sure everyone was aware of the cave, and took added precautions to protect the cave and Hornsby Springs. We have been successful in that and I am confident that we can work this out now. As a aside we have a better informed local governments, the public is more educated and some new laws are being voted in. A study is planned of the entire cave system that should be ...

2) In the consultation exercise for the Land Use Concept Plans for Mui Wo Facelift conducted by the PlanD in 2007, the Mui Wo residents considered that it would be worthwhile to examine the feasibility of re-opening the Silver Mine Cave in Mui Wo. The Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) commissioned a consultancy study in 2010 to investigate the internal conditions of the mine caves as well as the technical issues involved and improvement measures needed if the mine caves were to open for public visits. The study completed in March 2012 and concluded that it was not desirable to open the upper cave for public visits in view of its geological conditions, natural habitats and environment, and the problems related to fire safety and confined space. As for the lower cave, it has become an important bat habitat. Visitors entering the cave would not only interfere with the lives of bats, the viruses and bacteria carried by the bats may also endanger human health. As such, the study ...
The Avshalom Stalactite Cave, located on the western slopes of the Judean Mountains in Israel, is a real natural museum (over 5000 square meters), in which numerous stalactites and stalagmites are displayed as exhibits. These growths reach about 4 m in length and resemble outlandish objects: huge cuts of fabric, coral reefs or grapes ... The special lighting installed in the cave further enhances the mystical effect, so that Avshalom looks like a ready-made set for some horror movie. Recall that stalactites and stalagmites are formed from water that mixes with limestone and flows down from the ceiling of the cave. For hundreds of thousands of years, drops of mineralized water freeze on the floor and ceiling, gradually forming tall columns and hanging growths. Avshalom Cave was discovered by accident in May 1968 during the excavation of construction rubble. After another explosion, the workers saw the entrance to the cave. The first impression was fantastic: the cave shimmered with all the colors of the
Diverse interpretations have been made of carbon isotope time series in speleothems, reflecting multiple potential controls. Here we study the dynamics of 13C and 12C cycling in a particularly well-constrained site to improve our understanding of processes affecting speleothem δ13C values. The small, tubular Grotta di Ernesto cave (NE Italy) hosts annually-laminated speleothem archives of climatic and environmental changes. Temperature, air pressure, pCO2, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and their C isotopic compositions were monitored for up to five years in soil water and gas, cave dripwater and cave air. Mass-balance models were constructed for CO2 concentrations and tested against the carbon isotope data. Air advection forces winter pCO2 to drop in the cave air to ca. 500 ppm from a summer peak of ca. 1500 ppm, with a rate of air exchange between cave and free atmosphere of approximately 0.4 days. The process of cave ventilation forces degassing of CO2 from the dripwater, prior to any ...

From KGW) Ive seen a couple of articles on preventative measures being taken here in the PNW to protect cave-dwelling bats. I mentioned it to an IZ friend earlier today; she is planning to visit Oregon Caves (in the Klamath Mountains of SW Oregon), and said they had warnings on their website asking visitors to not bring clothing, shoes or other gear that had been in eastern caves.. Lava River Cave is a heavily used, semi-developed lava tube, and the longest of its type known in the state. Its quite fun and not too demanding or hazardous. There are others I like better, but I havent visited any of them in years. Given the environmental services bats provide- especially insect control- please take time to consider and exclude any items that may have been in eastern caves from visits you make to any PNW caves, not just the heavily used ones that are mentioned in articles like the one above. Once this disease (a fungal infection referred to as white nose syndrome) gets established, it appears to ...
The system got its name from Ronald Greeley of NASA who named it during his study of lava tubes for the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries.[6] He based it on the first well known cave in the system: Horse Cave. Horse Cave was discovered in the early 1900s by a group of cowboys who, while tracking down some of their lost cattle, found the cave. In the process, the cowboys spooked a few horses who were taking shelter just inside the cave entrance.[7] However, the first known caves in the area may have actually been the Redmond Caves. During the 1870s an old stage road passed by their area.[8] Undoubtedly, though, many of the caves in the system were already known to prehistoric Native Americans, as attributed by archeological artifacts found within.[9]. In modern times, the caves of the system have been affected in different ways. Some caves are privately held, while others are under the jurisdiction of the city of Bend. The city of Bend holds 7 caves on their property, one of ...
Surfacing in a chamber of stalactites in Chandalier Cave, in Ngarol Island, Palau. This submerged cave system was formed when sea levels were much lower than they are today. Rainwater percolating through the limestone rock of the caves created numerous stalactices and stalagmites. When sea levels rose at the end of the last ice age, the entrance to the cave was submerged, leaving four main chambers containing air pockets where stalactites descend from the ceiling. - Stock Video Clip K003/4580
Artificial light influences the behavior of many nocturnal animals such as bats, which are very sensitive to all types of lighting.. Particularly critical is the illumination of natural caves in which bats roost. Cave illumination is widespread in tourist areas worldwide and disturbs the animals in their resting places. Researchers of the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (Leibniz-IZW) and the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology (MPIO) have now investigated how the illumination of bat caves affects the animals behavior and whether the color of light makes a difference on their flight and emergence activity. Although red light irritates the small mammals somewhat less than white light, from the researchers point of view neither the entrance nor the interior of bat caves should be illuminated if bats are present. The results are published in the journal Global Ecology and Conservation.. With two experiments the scientists tested how bats respond to the lighting of cave entrances ...
Archaeologists analyzing prehistoric paintings in Spain have discovered the earliest example of cave art.. El Castillo Cave in Cantabria on Spains northern coast was one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites investigated for the study. The earliest dates were a minimum of 40,800 years ago for a red disk, 37,300 years for a hand stencil, and 35,600 years for a club-shaped symbol. The red disk is at least 4,000 years older than anything previously found in Europe and arguably the oldest cave art anywhere.. These early dates have sparked an interesting debate. The paintings are from the transition period between Neanderthals and the arrival of modern humans. No cave art has been firmly attributed to the Neanderthals and scholars have long debated the level of their intelligence.. Researchers used uranium-series disequilibrium dates of calcite deposits overlying art in eleven caves to determine the dates. Like radiocarbon dating, this technique measures the change in radioactive isotopes. Unlike the ...
Q.. Evolutionists often use as a proof of their theory the intriguing case of fish that live in deep-water caves and that have lost their sight permanently, yet still function quite well. Are blind cave fish a good example of organic evolution in action?. A.. Found in the subterranean caverns of the world are rare, unique, and sometimes exotic creatures. Numerous varieties of bats, spiders, insects, and other curious creatures populate these damp, cool environments. Hidden from the Sun, weather, and intrusion of man, these caverns represent a truly intriguing habitat. Another animal also dwells in these cavernous environments-the cave fish. Restricted to the dark confines of the globe, cave fish possess unique qualities that differ from the surface varieties generally seen. The most remarkable distinction between cave fish and their surface counterparts is a loss of visionary processes. There are several other interesting differences, but this particular disparity is the most commonly referenced ...

Researchers at the Nerja Caves have revealed that they have found evidence that the early cave dwellers had whale meat as part of their diet. An international team of scientists working at the Nerja Caves have found small barnacles, dated as being between 13,500 and 14,500 years old. These barnacles, live on the skin of whales so scientists have concluded that this is the earliest evidence of the use of cetaceans in European prehistory.. Between 13,500 and 14,500 years ago, the settlement of hunters and fishermen in Nerja were separated from the coast by about 2.5 miles. To survive, the community walked for hours to the shore and fished there and moved their prey, such as dolphins and seals, to the cave where they lived. However, when they found the remains of whales, they had to change their strategy, as shown by a study published in the journal Quaternary International. They took pieces of meat, fat and skin to the cave, but left the bones of the animal on the beach, says Jesus F. Jorda, ...
Cave - Solution cave features: Superimposed on the walls of cave passages are many small solutional sculpturings that record further details of water flow. Pockets of various sizes and kinds are cut back into the walls and ceiling. Some of these have ax-blade shapes and form where water seeping into the cave passage is mixed with the water already in the passage. If the seepage water and the passage water have the correct chemistry, corrosive water forms in the mixing zone and dissolves away the joint-controlled wall and ceiling pockets. Other wall and ceiling pockets are rounded kettle holes or circular cylinders that extend into
That sound of echoing dripping water will be heard in the first scene when you enter a cave but will disappear once it has been established that yes this is in fact a cave, only to be heard again when things get quiet and creepy. You will wonder why a huge dragon chooses to live in a cave full of human-sized passageways. Underground chasms will always be crossable by some kind of naturally formed rock-bridge which, despite having been there for thousands of years, will start to crumble slowly when you begin to walk across it. Cave lakes or cave pools are ALWAYS home to some horrible unknown creature.. ...

One of the well-known caves of Iran is located in Alborz Province, along the Karaj-Chalus route in the region of Gachsar. It is Yakh Morad Cave. There are many ice stalactites and stalagmites and other sediments that have created fascinating and unique forms in the heart of the cave. The history of this cave goes back to the second geological period. Some of the specialists believe that Yakh Morad Cave was formed about fifty million years ago under the sea.

If you come to Lockport, theres a tour through the caves, thats really interesting! The caves are actually a long tunnel, through which water from the Erie Canal locks was funneled, and that provided water power for factories above the caves. The tunnel goes through solid rock-they were built, I think, in the 1830s, maybe earlier, and how they did it, I cant imagine. They had to blast with dynamite, and if people were killed doing it, I can believe it. Partway through the tour, the guide turns off the lights (they have electricity to power lights in the caves), and you literally cant see your hand in front of your face. Jelle is investigating the sedimentological history of the Rising Star Cave system in the Cradle of Humankind, South Africa. his work will integrate lithological characteristics and facies associations of specific chambers in the cave system, with detrital zircon-based provenance studies, geochronologic and geochemical analyses. This extraordinary cave system has recently seen a lot of scientific and media attention due to the 2013 discovery of the largest concentration of hominid fossils ever recorded in a single location in Africa, belonging to the new species Homo naledi.. ...
Speleogenesis in confined settings generates cave morphologies that differ much from those formed in unconfined settings. Caves developed in unconfined settings are characterised by broadly dendritic patterns of channels due to highly competing development. In contrast, caves originated under confined conditions tend to form two- or three-dimensional mazes with densely packed conduits. This paper illustrates variations of solution (channel) porosity resulted from speleogenesis in unconfined and confined settings by the analysis of morphometric parameters of typical cave patterns. Two samples of typical cave systems formed in the respective settings are compared. The sample that represents unconfined speleogenesis consists of solely limestone caves, whereas gypsum caves of this type tend to be less dendritic and more linear. The sample that represents confined speleogenesis consists of both limestone and gypsum maze caves. The comparison shows considerable differences in average values of some parameters
The main target includes the ridge where steeply dipping Ordovician age quartzite is exposed over a strike length of approximately 850 meters. Geological mapping, geochemical sampling, and surveying identified a series of white quartzite outcroppings (Wonah Quartzite Formation) that form 2 lenses, the Central Zone that has been traced for approximately 500 m, and South Zone traced for 350 m along strike. The Central and South Zones consist of a highly competent quartzite unit that trends N to NNE, is approximately 50 meters in width, and has a steep east dip. There is an ESE trending fault between the Central and South Quartzite Zones that has an approximate 200 m sinstral, horizontal displacement. A total of 11 rock chip quartzite samples were taken from the Central & South Zones by MGX VP Exploration Andris Kikauka (P. Geo.) shortly after acquisition in 2015. Rock chip samples were analyzed by ALS Minerals, North Vancouver, BC, using Li Borate fusion, whole rock analysis ME-XRF-06 (XRF26), ...

This manuscript considers the hydrology and geochemistry of water resources within Timpanogos Cave National Monument in American Fork, Utah. In particular, data are presented for five cave pools within the Monument and the American Fork River that flows through the Monument. Two independent dye trace attempts in this study have not established a connection between the surface near the canyon rim at the south border of the Monument and the cave pools or the river. Ion chemistry of the pools reveals elevated sulfate concentrations. Analysis of sulfate and other reaction products suggests the possibility of combined carbonic and sulfuric acids as speleogenetic agents. Enrichment of 13C in dissolved inorganic carbon above expected values provides initial support of this hypothesis. The enrichment of sulfate in the cave pools when coupled with higher concentrations of fluorine, suggest increased interaction with bedrock influenced in the past by hydrothermal activity. This is especially relevant in pools

This undated photograph shows large (2 meter) paintings of horses at the Tito Bustillo Cave, Spain. These overlay earlier red paintings which, from uranium-series dating elsewhere in the cave, might be older than 29,000 years, making them the oldest cave paintings in Europe. The practice of cave art in Europe thus began up to 10,000 years earlier than previously thought, indicating the paintings were created either by the first anatomically modern humans in Europe or, perhaps, by Neanderthals. Our pill-popping culture and over-zealous livestock farmers typically take the blame for the widespread resistance of many harmful strains of bacteria to entire classes of antibiotics.. And the Food and Drug Administration took a bold move today with a new voluntary plan to help curtail the over-use of antibiotics in agriculture.. But the capacity to fend off antibiotics might actually be lodged deep in bacterias evolutionary history. A new study has uncovered dozens of species of bacteria in a 4 million-year-old cave that harbor resistance to both natural and synthetic antibiotics.. A team of researchers descended to 400 meters in distant, untrafficked reaches of Lechuguilla Cave in New Mexico to collect samples of bacteria. Few people have entered the caves deepest regions since its discovery in 1986, and surface water takes thousands of years to percolate through the nearby dense Yates Formation rock down to the cave. As a consequence, the area is a prime place to study naturally occurring ...
It is now known elite members of an ancient culture living around Africas deep and inaccessible Iroungou Cave in Gabon mutilated their faces by removing selected teeth, which changed the shape of their faces. But why? Around 28 peoples skeletons dating to the 14th-15th centuries AD were put to rest in Iroungou Cave, an unusual cave in Gabon, in west Central Africa. The discovery was first announced by a team of French and Gabonese researchers on Dec 18, 2018. At the time Richard Oslisly, who led the expedition financed by the National Agency of National Parks, said the discovery was unique in Africa, because human remains are almost non-existent in African soils. The reason human remains are so rare in Africa is because the soils are very acidic, so everything of human and animal origin decomposes very quickly. This is why the discovery of the 28 skeletons at the Iroungou Cave site is so important for archaeology. Now, the researchers new study demonstrates that these dead bodies showed ...

The following is a complete chronology of the various line-ups of the multinational alternative rock music group Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (briefly Nick Cave - Man or Myth?[1] and later Nick Cave and the Cavemen)[2] formed in late 1983 in Melbourne, Australia, by five musicians, including several former members of the group The Birthday Party shortly after this bands demise, and is thus seen as its continuation. In addition to Melbourne, the band has resided in Berlin, Germany, São Paulo, Brazil, and London, UK. Touring members considered guests are listed here in non-bold type. ...
Personnel from the WKU Department of Geography and Geology and Center for Human GeoEnvironmental Studies (CHNGES) and Cave Research Foundations (CRF) International Section were invited to the island of Tongatatu, located within the Kingdom of Tonga, to provide resource management expertise for Anahulu Cave, the islands premier show cave. The cave, located on the east coast of the island, is extensively decorated and is most noted for its large, freshwater lake.. Dr. Pat Kambesis (CHNGES), Dr. Rick Toomey (CRF) and Dr. Elizabeth Winkler (CRF) conducted detailed cave survey, photodocumentation, resource and biologic inventory, and impact assessment of Anahulu Cave. They also instigated a clean-up of the commercial section of the cave system. Based on their field work, they determined that Anahulu Cave is flank margin cave. These types of caves form on limestone coastlines at the interface of a freshwater and saltwater lens.. During the survey the team documented a new section of the cave system ...
The limestone walls of the cave (referred to in the exhibition as canvases) are reconstructed in the exhibition as 1:10 scale fiberglass tubes, which give a sense of the caves folds, creases and stretches. Complementing this overview, a section of painted, life-sized replicas of selected panels from the cave surround the viewer, placed at their original height and angle. These quotes from the cave highlight how the dents and bulges of the caves surface have influenced the paintings forms.. The Lascaux paintings are what the bones and survival tools of the Cro-Magnon, (also part of the exhibition) cannot be: a vivid trace of how they saw and made things seen. The show emphasizes the commonality between the Lascaux painting and filmmaking and photography, at one point suggesting that the caves original users would have illuminated different parts of drawings with multiple heads to create a cinematic kind of experience. One panel allows you to compare the perspective of the image makers, ...

Tucked within the Phou Hin Boun National Protected Area in central Laos are the Kong Lor Caves. It is a river cave system that stretches for more than 7.4 kilometers, one of the longest in the world. You can take a boat trip through the caves with a guide, who can point out the stunning geological formations. The caves are quite dark, and you might get wet in certain conditions if water is dripping from the ceilings. Once you make your way through the winding cave waters, other popular things to do include walking through the tiny rural village of Kong Lor and enjoying some of the other outdoor activities in the national park. The best way to get to the caves is to stay in Vientiane and hire a bus. Kong Lor caves is about five hours from Vientiane, so you will want to plan an overnight trip.. ...
Stable-isotope analyses are valuable in karst settings, where characterizing biogeochemical cycling of carbon along groundwater flow paths is critical for understanding and protecting sensitive cave and karst water resources. This study quantified the seasonal changes in concentration and isotopic composition (d13C) of aqueous and gaseous carbon speciesâ€dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and gaseous carbon dioxide (CO2)â€to characterize sources and transfer of these species along a karst flow path, with emphasis on a cave environment. Gas and water samples were collected from the soil and a cave in northwestern Arkansas approximately once a month for one year to characterize carbon cycling along a conceptual groundwater flow path. In the soil, as the DIC concentration increased, the isotopic composition of the DIC became relatively lighter, indicating an organic carbon source for a component of the DIC and corroborating soil DIC as a proxy for soil respiration. In the cave, a positive ...
We provide sedimentological, geochemical, mineral magnetic, stable carbon isotope, charcoal, and pollen-based evidence from a guano/clay sequence in Gaura cu Muscă Cave (SW Romania), from which we deduced that from ~ 1230 BC to ~ AD 1240 climate oscillated between wet and dry. From ~ 1230 BC to AD 1000 the climate was wetter than the present, prompting flooding of the cave, preventing bats from roosting, and resulting in a slow rate of clay accumulation. The second half of the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) was generally drier; the cave experienced occasional flash flooding in between which maternity bat roosts established in the cave. One extremely wet event occurred around AD 1170, when Fe/Mn and Ti/Zr ratios show the highest values coincident with a substantial increase of sediment load in the underground stream. The mineral magnetic characteristics for the second part of the MWP indicate the partial input of surface-sourced sediments reflecting agricultural development and forest clearance in ...
If you are just now putting the finishing touches on your brand new man cave, you have two choices: rip everything out and start over, or open the windows. Many problems can be avoided by ensuring that your man cave is properly ventilated. Also, dont hang out down there for long periods when it still has that new house smell (thats the VOCs at work).. If you are still in the planning stages of building your dream man cave, youre in luck. The green building industry is going full steam ahead with safer, healthier products. There are plenty of manly no- or low-VOC choices, such as recycled carpeting and other green flooring.. The same goes for furnishings. Sofas and other home design products can off-gas VOCs like crazy. Find a manufacturer that does no- or low-VOC fabrication. There are choices to fit every cave instinct, from crazy modern to traditional.. Umm…when can we go back to calling them playrooms?. Image: The Doodler on flickr under creative commons.. ...
The Burnholt Cave entrance is an 8-foot-deep vertical drop, which has a ladder to descend, to a slope that leads south. This immediately opens into a breakdown-floored room about 25 feet in diameter and 25 feet high. There is a stream that exits the southwestern wall, flowing downstream, and the main way one is an more obvious passage leading south. This passage extends upstream for about 150 feet, becoming both stooping and wading. This was, at one time, the entirety of the known cave.. Burnholt is, however, a multi-leveled cave, and there is a steep mud climb that leads right off the stream passage to the upper level. This passage, in turn, leads south-southwest for almost 500 feet. There are a large number of formations, clay floors, pits that can be stepped across, and both an upper-upper and lower level.. The lower level that is accessed in this area is less than 150 feet long. It contains the stream, and has ceiling heights that vary between 4 and 12 feet.. The upper-upper level is ...
Dr Pike said: We see evidence for earlier human symbolism in the form of perforated beads, engraved egg shells and pigments in Africa 70-100,000 years ago, but it appears that the earliest cave paintings are in Europe. One argument for its development here is that competition for resources with Neanderthals provoked increased cultural innovation from the earliest groups of modern humans in order to survive. Alternatively, cave painting started before the arrival of modern humans, and was done by Neanderthals. That would be a fantastic find as it would mean the hand stencils on the walls of the caves are outlines of Neanderthals hands, but we will need to date more examples to see if this is the case. ...
http://encarta.msn.com/map_701516587/Slovakia.html). The ice cave is to be found in the Slovak Paradise, in the National Nature Reserve Stratena within the territory of the Slovak Paradise National Park close to Kosice. It was formed in Middle Triassic limestones by the former tributary stream of the Hnilec river, at three developmental levels. The cave length is 1,483 m. Ice filling occurs in the form of ground ice, ice „waterfalls, ice stalagmites and columns. The total volume of ice is 110,100 cubic meters with maximum thickness of 26.5 m. It ranks among the most important ice caves in the world, thanks to its character of glaciation. The cave is one of the most important winter refuges of bats - Myotis mystacinus and Myotis brandti in Slovakia. The cave was discovered in 1870, and open to the public as early as in 1871. Since 1887, it has been the first cave with electric illumination in that-time Hungary. Currently, 475 m of the cave are open to the public. ...

SEBASTOPOL, Ca) - In 1979, a headless torso wrapped in a burlap sack was found in an Idaho cave, and now, more than 40 years later, that victim has been identified.Joseph Henry Loveless, who murdered his wife with an ax, was last seen before he escaped from jail in 1916, after sawing through the bars using a saw hed hidden in his shoes.Loveless was identified by the DNA Doe Project, a nonprofit volunteer organization that uses forensic genealogy to identify previously unidentified deceased people.Several groups had attempted to crack the case before the DNA Doe Project stepped in. In 1991, limbs were discovered in the same cave where the torso was initially found.Researchers and students from Idaho State University searched and excavated the cave in 2015, but Lovelesss head was never found.Investigators had little to go on in 1979. The sheriff at the time believed the remains to be of a gambler from the turn of the century, based on his clothing. Because of the odor and presence of flesh, the ...

Pseudoscorpions are one of the most diverse of the smaller arachnid orders but there is relatively little information about the distribution of these tiny animals, especially in Neotropical caves. Here we map the distribution of the Pseudoscorpiones in Brazilian caves with record of 12 families and 22 genera, total 313 caves from 13 states. Among them, two families (Atemnidae and Geogarypidae) with three genera (Brazilatemnus Muchmore, 1975, Paratemnoides Harvey, 1991 and Geogarypus Chamberlin, 1930) are recorded for the first time in cave habitat as well as other seven genera previously unknown for Brazilian caves (Olpiolum Beier, 1931, Pachyolpium Beier 1931, Tyrannochthonius Chamberlin, 1929, Lagynochthonius Beier, 1951, Neocheiridium Beier 1932, Ideoblothrus Balzan, 1892 and Heterolophus Tömösváry, 1884) but these genera are from families already recorded in this habitat, and have their distributional ranges expanded for all other previously recorded genera. We present these data in maps,

The entrance to the secret area is through a cave at the back of the large lake. However, the cave was barred off to prevent the Graffiti from inside pouring out. Shadow Mario broke the barrier when he ran inside, which ended up polluting the entire lake. In order to get to the cave, Mario has to make use of several lily pads to traverse the lake, as trying to swim in the lake will deal damage to Mario. The lily pads will start to disintegrate as soon as Mario stands on one, so the player has to quickly move from one pad to the next in order to avoid falling in the water and make it to the cave. Just before the cave, there are a few logs the player can use to to climb to the entrance, which has a box with the Turbo Nozzle in it. Collecting this nozzle will unlock it for this level. Upon entering the cave, Shadow Mario will appear to take F.L.U.D.D. away. Mario will then be brought to an area with a series of moving platforms. The red and blue ones flip alternatively and the white cubes move and ...

Want to be an explorer? Want to see places nobody has ever seen? You have three options: become an astronaut, become a deep-sea diver or become a caver.. The first isnt going to happen for a man my age and the second is expensive, so its a good thing I live in one of the best regions in the world to do the third. Cantabria in northern Spain has a large amount of karst, a type of stone that often has caves.. One of them is Luna Llena (Full Moon), which has yet to be fully mapped. In my fourth caving expedition in Spain I was part of a team that went to look for new passages. I was thrilled. Seeing unexplored parts of the subterranean world was one of the reasons I got into caving. I didnt think the payoff would come so quickly.. Luna Llena is at the bottom of an abandoned galena mine from the 1920s. The miners were blasting with dynamite one day and opened up a hole into an unknown cave. Its been regularly explored ever since but there are still many blank spots on its map.. The mineshaft ...
The cave site of Shanidar is located in the Zagros Mountains of Kurdistan in Iraq. It was excavated between 1957-1961 by Ralph Solecki and his team from Columbia University and yielded the first adult Neanderthal skeletons in Iraq, dating between 60-80 000 years BP. The excavated area produced nine skeletons of Neanderthals of varying ages and states of preservation and completeness (labelled Shanidar I - IX, or Shanidar 1 - 9). The tenth individual was recently discovered by M. Zeder during examination of a faunal assemblage from the site at the Smithsonian Institution. The remains seemed to Zeder to suggest that Neandertals had funeral ceremonies, burying their dead with flowers, and that they took care of injured individuals. One skeleton and casts of the others at the Smithsonian Institution are all that is left of the findings, the originals having been dispersed in Iraq.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Long accustomed to lifting mammoth bones from mudbanks and museum shelves and making sketches from cave art to gather details about Pleistocene animal anatomy, renowned paleobiologist and artist R. Dale Guthrie offers a fascinating and controversial interpretation of ancient cave art in his new book The Nature of Paleolithic Art.. This ancient art was made during the late Pleistocene, about 10,000 to 35,000 years ago, and has typically been the purview of art historians and anthropologists, many of whom view Paleolithic art as done by accomplished shaman-artists. This assumption may be true of a few of the best known and better-drawn images, but these are a small proportion of preserved Paleolithic art, Guthrie said. Using new forensic techniques on fossil handprints of the artists and examining thousands of images, I found that all ages and both sexes were making art, not just the senior male shamans, Guthrie said. These included hundreds of prints made as ocher, ...

In the midst of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer-these words by Albert Camus have resonated for me often this winter. I was on retreat with an interesting group of people in Boston over the weekend. Sitting and breaking bread and moving around with them in a beautiful, harmonious space that was once a harpsichord factory, I was very aware of the way the container of a retreat supports the effort to wake up and be present to our lives. Meditating with others who have come from different places heightens the awareness that our bodies have come from somewhere and not just Boston or New Hampshire or New York but from the distant past, from ancestors who have braved all manner of hardships. In the container of a retreat, supported by the energy and intention of others, the experience of sitting on a cushion and turning the attention inward is no small thing: it can feel like descending into a vast subterranean cave or series of caves full of forces and energies ...
In the darkest days of the 20th Century, as the shadow of the evil that was the Holocaust fell across Europe, the courage of one woman was the difference between life and death for a few Jewish families from a little Ukrainian village. Esther Stermer lived in that village with her six children until Nazi forces came in late 1941. More than a thousand Jews were rounded up and sent to camps, where most died. But Esther found another way. Along with her family, including her sons Saul and Sam Stermer, 92 and 86 today, Esther spent nearly a year and a half underground, living in the pitch black of two vast caves in Ukraine, along with 36 other Jews, to escape Nazi persecution. The secret is that we were in trouble, Sam Stermer told ABC News. But we never did give in. It is an astonishing story, one of strength and survival from the Holocaust, brought to light 70 years later in the documentary No Place on Earth. In October 2010, both Saul and Sam revisited the cave for the first time. Its a ...
Caves most enigmatic, elegant and sophisticated meld of words and music, at times more of an impressionistic jazz event than a rock album and a triumph for Warren Ellis as The Bad Seeds musical co-ordinator. Cave, meanwhile, is a stoic, aged observer of humanitys biologically-encoded foibles, watching the local girls of Waters Edge with a bible of tricks they do with their legs. But here I am, with an almost nine month old baby girl (shall I call her Cave Baby II?) and my eldest about to start school! Since I last blogged weve moved house and Ive reached the latter stages of NCT breastfeeding counselling training. With any luck, Ill get the last few assignments done before Christmas and Ill be officially up and running by early next year. I can step out of situations more now, and analyse more objectively why I react to things in the way I do. So, another baby! I wrote a lot on this blog about my journey back to fertility. My periods restarted when Cave Baby I ...
