Activities performed in the preparation of bibliographic records for CATALOGS. It is carried out according to a set of rules and contains information enabling the user to know what is available and where items can be found.
A general term covering bibliographical and bibliothecal classifications. It mostly refers to library CLASSIFICATION for arrangement of books and documents on the shelves. (Harrod's Librarians' Glossary, 7th ed, p85)
Acquisition, organization, and preparation of library materials for use, including selection, weeding, cataloging, classification, and preservation.
The area of bibliography which makes known precisely the material conditions of books, i.e., the full name of the author, the exact title of the work, the date and place of publication, the publisher's and printer's names, the format, the pagination, typographical particulars, illustrations, and the price, and for old books, other characteristics such as the kind of paper, binding, etc. It is also called analytical bibliography and physical bibliography. (Harrod's Librarians' Glossary, 7th ed)

Library cooperation: wave of the future or ripple? (1/39)

Little of the literature in library cooperation applies specifically to library service for the health sciences. Based on experience in and observations of the cooperation of health science libraries, this short lecture reviews aspects of general library cooperation, networks, and consortia. The effects on library operation of several cooperative activities are enumerated and cooperation management is discussed briefly.  (+info)

Cost-performance analysis of cataloging and card production in a medical center library. (2/39)

The unit cost of cataloging current English language monographs was studies and compared with the cost of purchasing catalog cards from a commercial source. Two hypotheses were proposed: (1) in-library costs for cataloging and card production are higher than those for the purchased-card method; (2) throughput time is faster for the in-library method. In addition, the data can be used to develop an analytical cost-performance model for administrative purposes. The data presented support the hypotheses. The model developed provides a mechanism for arriving at a cost for different levels of service and can be used to measure the performance of other alternative methods of cataloging. Implications for the use of CATLINE are discussed and suggestions for further studies are described.  (+info)

Building a medical history collection. (3/39)

The importance of a clearly defined policy for building a medical historical collection is stressed in relation to the type of library and to the financial possibilities for building the collection and for the proper housing, preservation, servicing, and bibliographic control of such a collection.  (+info)

Mechanization of library procedures in a medium-sized medical library: XVI. Computer-assisted cataloging, the first decade. (4/39)

After ten years of experimentation in computer-assisted cataloging, the Washington University School of Medicine Library has decided to join the Ohio College Library Center network. The history of the library's work preceding this decision is reviewed. The data processing equipment and computers that have permitted librarians to explore different ways of presenting cataloging information are discussed. Certain cataloging processes are facilitated by computer manipulation and printouts, but the intellectual cataloging processes such as descriptive and subject cataloging are not. Networks and shared bibliographic data bases show promise of eliminating the intellectual cataloging for one book by more than one cataloger. It is in this area that future developments can be expected.  (+info)

Computer-assisted cataloging: experiences at the UCLA Biomedical Library. (5/39)

The computer-assisted procedures developed in the UCLA Biomedical Library Cataloging Division have been in effect for approximately three years. The system utilizes a Delta Data System cathode ray tube terminal and cassette attachment for on or off-line input of data. Products of the system include catalog card sets arranged in filing order, a monthly Recent Acquisitions List, and computer-generated book catalogs. Planning, personnel, and equipment requirements are discussed, and preliminary cost figures for various parts of the system are given. Potential applications of the automated system on a regional level and in terms of the library's future automation plans are considered.  (+info)

The SUNY biomedical communication network: six years of progress in on-line bibiographic retrieval. (6/39)

The SUNY Biomedical Communication Network became operational in 1968 as the first on-line bibliograhpic retrieval service for biomedical literature. Since 1968, the SUNY/BCN has grown in size from nine to thirty-two medical and university libraries and has expanded its data base coverage to include the ERIC and Psychological Abstracts data bases in addition to the full ten-year retrospective MEDLARS data base. Aside from the continuous provision of an on-line searching system, the SUNY experience over the last six years has yielded valuable information in the following areas of: (1) monograph indexing and retrieval, (2) shared cataloging, (3) user interaction and education in on-line systems, and (4) member participation in Network policy-making processes. The continued success of the SUNY/BCN is evidence that it is possible to provide a high quality on-line bibliographic retrieval system at cost to academic institutions. SUNY's success in this effort is the result of centralized resource sharing and effective regional networking, combined with thoughtful planning by user advisory committees.  (+info)

A description of the catalog division project at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia Library. (7/39)

This paper describes the procedures used at the Library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia to divide its ninety-year-old dictionary card catalog. The division was necessitated by overcrowding, obsolete subject headings, and lack of a complete authority list which resulted in like materials being scattered throughout the catalog under several headings. Two catalogs were created: the historical-biographical catalog, representing all works published before 1950 and all works of historical or biographical nature; and the current catalog, containing all works published from 1950 on, excepting historical or biographical materials. The 1950- catalog was further divided into name and subject catalogs, and the subject section was revised according to MeSH. The project was completed in about two years. As a result, searching time has been much reduced, and the library is able to take advantage of the annual revisions of MeSH to update the subject catalog.  (+info)

Evolution of a processing system in a large biomedical library. (8/39)

The processing system used in the UCLA Biomedical Library is modest in size and still under development. Its origins date back to a batch mode serials control system begun in the mid-1960s. This was converted to an on-line system which currently has modules for check-in, updating and retrieval, claims, bindery preparation, and invoice information. Titles can be retrieved at the terminal by search of any word in the title, by subject heading, language, country of publication, and type of publication. The system is adaptable to network use and at present is shared with one other library. To the serials system has been added a computer-assisted cataloging and card production system. The latter utilizes serials nucleus software as well as design for data input and data storage. In-house listings and coding procedures overlap in a general way. Work is under way on further integration of the two processing subsystems and a feasibility study has been completed for addition of a subsystem for acquisitions which will combine and adapt features of the other two; for example, information retrieval characteristics from both, catalog coding and programs for acceptance of data, serials programs for claims, and other output programs. Cost benefits of the subsystems are described and discussed.  (+info)

Ive just created a group dedicated to Flash-Mob Cataloging. Flash-Mob Cataloging is when a horde of LibraryThing members descend on some small library with laptops and CueCat barcode scanners, catalog their books in LibraryThing, eat some pizza, talk some talk and leave them with a gleaming new LibraryThing catalog. Why do it? There are many small libraries that use LibraryThing as their online catalog-museums, organizations, churches, schools, synagogues, temples, even some embassies! Its an easy cheap solution to library automation. (More on organizational LibraryThing accounts here.) And having a flash-mob do the cataloging makes it easy and fun to do the data entry! Emphasis on the fun, trust me.. Weve done two so far (Rhode Island Audubon Society and St. Johns Church in Beverly MA), to great success. Both were in New England because, well, thats where the most LibraryThing employees are located. But the concept isnt limited by location! Anyone can organize one-hence, the new Flash-Mob ...

N2 - Background: It has recently been demonstrated that organism identifications can be recovered from mass spectra using various methods including base-specific fragmentation of nucleic acids. Because mass spectrometry is extremely rapid and widely available such techniques offer significant advantages in some applications. A key element in favor of mass spectrometric analysis of RNA fragmentation patterns is that a reference database for analysis of the results can be generated from sequence information. In contrast to hybridization approaches, the genetic affinity of any unknown isolate can in principle be determined within the context of all previously sequenced 16S rRNAs without prior knowledge of what the organism is. In contrast to the original RNase T1 cataloging method, when digestion products ...
Description: Cataloging and providing bibliographic control has recently been the center of several important discussions. Many of these discussions seem to focus on the practical aspects of costs, staffing and training of new staff. They also address the broader question of the need to follow cataloging standards. Libraries are raising the question of what services they should provide to users and what role libraries can play in providing bibliographic access without diminishing the value of the catalog. This presentation will contribute to this discussion by revisiting the question of the cataloging standards, and offering alternative approaches and ideas to cataloging. It will discuss innovative staffing solutions that can reduce the cost of cataloging and help overcome the problem of staffing and staff training ...
Seymour Lubetzky was born in a small village, in what is now known as Belarus, on April 28th, 1898. It was there that he studied literature and languages and worked as a teacher before immigrating to the United States in 1925. Lubetzky studied languages at UCLA, receiving his bachelors degree in 1931. In 1932, the University of California, Berkley awarded Lubetzky a masters degree in German languages and library science. After graduation, Lubetzky worked as a cataloger at UCLA and began regularly publishing articles on cataloging principles. In 1943, Lubetzky was hired at the Library of Congress to help process a backlog of books needing to be cataloged. His questioning of the existing cataloging system led to his publication of several articles including Rules for Descriptive Cataloging and Cataloging Rules and Principles. Principles from these articles carried into standards for the field and are still used in libraries across the world today, including the Library of Congress. Lubetzky ...

As it stand searching on Google for recursive keyword like that is hard, so I ask here. I understand this can be done in excel, but I believe something like this is typical and has been done by IT people in large corporation where they have a lot software (custom made or not).. Especially for cataloging command-line software, as this executable has no gui and often no help file accompanied. Once you have 1000+ of them in one directory (within your %PATH% lookup) after a while you started to forget which command to do this? what is the correct syntax?. So I want to know software that address above issue, with fields like software name exe name version description syntax (for command-line) and so on.. Clarification: yes, most fields can be queried from PE image, as for other field I dont mind filling it manually as it may be contextual case. The closest google could give me is app called SoftCAT free, but Im not satisfied.. ...
Although epithelial ovarian cancers (EOCs) are initially treated with platinum-based chemotherapy, EOCs vary in platinum responsiveness. Cataloging antineoplastic agents according to their effectiveness against platinum-resistant and platinum-sensitive EOC cell lines is valuable for development of therapeutic strategies to avoid platinum inefficacy and to exploit platinum sensitivity. TOV-21G devoid of FANCF expression, OV-90 and SKOV-3 were employed as examples of platinum-sensitive, platinum-intermediate and platinum-resistant cell lines, respectively. Antineoplastic agents examined included mitomycin C, doxorubicin, etoposide, gemcitabine, chlorambucil, paclitaxel, triapine and X-rays. Their effectiveness against cell lines was analyzed by clonogenic assays. Cytotoxic profiles of mitomycin C and carboplatin were similar, with mitomycin C exhibiting greater potency and selectivity against TOV-21G than carboplatin. Cytotoxic profiles of doxorubicin, etoposide and X-rays overlapped with that of ...
A data set catalog structure eliminates the requirement for base catalog/data volume synchronization in a multi-processing environment while enabling the operating efficiency directly addressing the data volumes. The catalog is distributed between a keyed sequential base catalog and, on each data volume, an entry sequential volume data set. Catalog information which must be synchronized with application data sets is stored in volume records in the volume data set. A method for opening a users data set having a key comprises the steps of obtaining from the base catalog a direct pointer associated with the key to the volume record for the user data set; accessing the volume record (relative byte address) addressed by the pointer; comparing the key of the user data set with the key of the accessed volume record; if the keys do not compare, key searching the volume data set to locate the volume record containing correct key and rewriting the direct pointer in the base catalog to address the correct volume

Another close relative of the aphids, Daktulosphaira vitifoliae, has also caused extensive damage as a destructive pest. The grape phylloxeran (D. vitifoliae), originally native to eastern North America, feeds on the roots of Vitis vinifera grapes, stunting the growth of or killing its vines. In the late 19th century, after the species was accidentally introduced to Europe by botanists collecting American vine specimens, a phylloxera epidemic destroyed most of the wine grape vineyards on the continent. The species, a member of the Phylloxeridae family, remains a pest to worldwide commercial vineyards to this day ...

The miniaturization of the current technology of storage media is hindered by fundamental limits of quantum mechanics. A new approach consists in using so-called spin-crossover molecules as the smallest possible storage unit. Similar to normal hard drives, these special molecules can save information via their magnetic state. A research team from Kiel University has now managed to successfully place a new class of spin-crossover molecules onto a surface and to improve the molecules storage capacity. The storage density of conventional hard drives could therefore theoretically be increased by more than one hundred fold. The study has been published in the scientific journal Nano Letters. ...

The most important thing for libraries to focus on in order to maintain relevancy in the future is to maintain focus on how our core mission of connecting users to resources is unchanging amidst any technological or political changes. Librarians and library management need to address the ways in which librarians continue to accomplish the core goals of libraries in both traditional and new ways. As a profession we tend to get hung up on specific tasks or processes which become reified as what librarians do, when the tasks should be continually put in the context of our larger mission. This is true both of more technical aspects such as cataloging and metadata services which remain vital to creating access to resources, and to public facing services such as developing information literacy in all library uses that addresses the varied ways in which library users access and use information. Firenze University Press - Università degli Studi di Firenze - This bibliographic material is patrimony of our Laboratory of the Behavior Physiology. This research unit originated in 1972 by will of Aldo Giachetti (until 1990) and with the beginning of the activity of Corrado Bucherelli. In the early 1980s, with Carlo Ambrogi Lorenzini (until 2004), the cataloging became more capillary and systematic, to continue to this day. All the researchers who worked in our laboratory contributed to this collection (Giovanna Tassoni 1986-2000, Benedetto Sacchetti 1996-2002 and Elisabetta Baldi from 1991). The study of learning, memory and behavior requires to follow a broad spectrum of neuroscience topics, ranging from neuronal biochemistry to neuropsychology. The Authors idea of publishing this collection comes from believing that a such website, though not exhaustive, might be a useful and targeted tool for the selection of bibliographic material in the field of behavioral neuroscience. Abstract: What do searchers find when they look for literature on homosexuality? This question has profound implications for older as well as younger gays in their coming out, as well as in their subsequent identity development. Library records provide credible data to answer the question, since they represent relatively free sources of information, unlike data from bookstores, publishers, and some World Wide Web sites. The records of WorldCat, the worlds largest union database of library records, comprise over 30 million records listed in the Online Computer Library Center. For the purposes of the study, 18,757 records listed under Homosexuality, Gay Men, and Gays were downloaded; records for Lesbian and Lesbians were not examined. Findings of the study suggest that while there has indeed been considerable growth in terms of the quantity of gay literature produced since 1969, such gains maybe offset by the deteriorating quality of cataloging copy, which makes the experience of ...

The National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), a partnership between the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) and the Library of Congress, is a long-term effort to provide permanent, free access to historic newspapers selected and digitized by NEH-funded awardees in the United States. This program was created to build upon the United States Newspaper Program (USNP), another NEH & Library of Congress sponsored program geared toward locating, cataloging, and preserving microfilm newspapers published in the U.S. from the 18th Century to present. The NDNP extends the usefulness of the USNP digitized assets by incorporating newspapers published from 1836-1922 into a national digital newspaper resource, Chronicling America, where the digitized pages are made available. Walking Trees: Teaching Teachers in New York City Schools is a book by Ralph Fletcher. It was first published in 1990. It was published again in 1995 under a slightly different title Walking Trees: Portraits of Teachers and Children in the Culture of Schools. Walking Trees: Teaching Teachers in New York City Schools is the story of Ralph Fletchers introduction to the New York City school system as a teacher trainer in a writing staff development program. Brenda Miller Power in her review for Educational Leadership said Walking Trees is a wonder, she believes that Fletcher has done a superb job of cataloging in specific ways the difference between a burned-out teacher and a bad teacher and that its greatest contribution to our field may be that it helps us begin to ask more of the right kinds of difficult questions. Nancy E. Zuwiyya in her review for Library Journal said that Fletchers early encounters often prove frustrating, and his description of a typical uncooperative teacher as a ...

Child joined the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) after finding that she was too tall to enlist in the Womens Army Corps (WACs) or in the U.S. Navys WAVES.[5] She began her OSS career as a typist at its headquarters in Washington, but because of her education and experience soon was given a more responsible position as a top secret researcher working directly for the head of OSS, General William J. Donovan.[6][7][8] As a research assistant in the Secret Intelligence division, she typed 10,000 names on white note cards to keep track of officers. For a year, she worked at the OSS Emergency Rescue Equipment Section (ERES) in Washington, D.C. as a file clerk and then as an assistant to developers of a shark repellent needed to ensure that sharks would not explode ordnance targeting German U-boats. In 1944, she was posted to Kandy, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), where her responsibilities included registering, cataloging and channeling a great volume of highly classified communications for the OSSs ...

Two genome sequencing approaches will be used for characterization of the mutations conferring white pupae and temperature sensitive lethal. Through cataloging SNPs that are in common to each line, at expected frequency in each sex surrounding the QTL locus, a short list of putative causative mutations can be generated. These putative mutations will be screened using CRISPR/Cas9 targeted gene editing to validate, and additionally targeted in new tephritid species. Additionally, several distinct genomic methodologies will be employed to characterize the translocations present in the medfly genetic sexing systems. Four distinct chromosomal arrangements will be investigated, a wild type, a Vienna-7 line, and a Vienna-8 with or without D53 inversion (i.e. V8-D53+ and V8-D53-). For each, a single male file (containing the autosomal/Y translocation) will be prepared for one of three methods, optical mapping, a HiC contact map construction, and linked-read sequencing. ...
The Microbial Genomics Section (MGS) explores connections between microbes, microbial communities and human health. The MGS has an ambitious portfolio of projects focused on cataloging the bacterial and fungal diversity of human skin as it relates to both health and disease. Analysis of the relative abundance of bacterial and fungal marker genes has been used to generate both baseline characterizations of healthy individuals and testable hypotheses about the underlying causes of diseases like atopic dermatitis. Comprehensive studies employing metagenomic sequencing to capture pathway and abundance data across taxonomic kingdoms are now underway. In addition, a fruitful collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Centers Department of Laboratory Medicine has been established to examine outbreaks of clinically relevant hospital pathogens, focusing on carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, using high-resolution genome sequencing.. The Dan Markingson case is one of those that asks us all to re-examine our beliefs. Such cases can be a screen on which to project our pre-existing thoughts or it can be a new page. Whichever way you take it - the true drama of his suicide, the pictures of his childhood posted on the Internet, the anguish of his mother, the struggles of his champions - all add a layer of reality to the issues often seen from a greater distance. Tueday morning, I worked in a busy clinic seeing patients, and this case was sitting on the side of my mind. I had been trying to focus on what aspect was the most compelling to me. I knew it wasnt all the major controversies that immediately come to mind, things we could all list. Carl Elliot does a fine job of cataloging them in The Deadly Corruption of Clinical Trials. And it wasnt the absurdities that I [and everyone else] mentioned; allowing a patient declared incompetent to suddenly become competent to sign on to a trial; putting someone whose mind was filled with ...

My sister, C, recently returned from about six months living abroad in Bhutan attending a school program and then she spent the summer wwoofing in Europe. I think she is incredibly brave and adventurous for embarking on these journeys and traveling the world on her own. Although I have a bit of the travel bug, I dont think I would have the courage to travel to foreign countries and just immerse myself in the cultures, like she did, especially in Bhutan. C wrote a wonderful, interesting blog cataloging her adventures, if you want to take a look, here. Most of my travel dreams are to see many of the beautiful National Parks in the western United States and to go back to Europe, maybe Italy, France, or Germany. A lot of my desires for traveling are driven by photography and food. I would love to photograph Yellowstone, Zion, Yosemite, Canyonlands, the list goes on. I think Italy is probably the highest on my list of foodie places to go, all the pasta, breads, mmm and gelato! Oh, plus I have to ...
Altogether, 16,697 artifacts weighing a total of 135 tons were returned to a watery grave at the bottom of the Savannah River, said Jim Jobling, project manager for the Conservation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University, which is tasked with cataloging, cleaning and preserving artifacts from the Civil War shipwreck. Anything I considered to be unique, I would say, I want this, I want this, Jobling said. I picked through everything. No unique stuff went back in the river.. The CSS Georgia was scuttled by its own crew to prevent Gen. William T. Sherman from capturing the massive gunship when his Union troops took Savannah in December 1864. Remains from the Confederate ironclad were salvaged during the summer and fall as part of a $703 million deepening of the Savannah harbor for cargo ships.. Based on sonar images of the murky riverbed, researchers knew they would fine big chunks of the ships armor, several cannons and large pieces of its engine.. What they hadnt expected were the ...

University of California, San Francisco. Viral Metagenomic Analysis of Plasma from CFS patients. Eric Delwart, Ph.D., University of California San Francisco and Blood Systems Research Institute is cataloging all the viruses, or virome, from 200 ME/CFS blood samples from the SolveCFS BioBank. He will look for novel viruses as well as compare those found to what is known in healthy blood samples. He will do this by using filtering the plasma to remove bacteria and human cells. The filtrate is treated with a cocktail of nuclease to digest non-viral capsid protected (mostly human and bacterial) nucleic acids. The RNA and DNA protected within viral capsids are then extracted and amplified in a non-biased way using random RT-PCR. The random amplification products are then deep sequenced using 454 pyrosequencing or Illumina sequencing. The resulting genetic information is then analyzed using a super-computer for similarities to known human and animal viruses in order to detect novel viral-like ...

One of the most creative pair in 20th century has to be Charles and Ray Eames. I had the pleasure to work on the Work of Charles and Ray Eames: A Legacy of Invention exhibition at Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2000. It was very cool to dig through LACMAs Eames collection. I remember going to LACMA West, which was the former May Department Stores building at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, and cataloging what was there. LACMA was lucky that Eames front office at the 901 Washington Boulevard in Venice was donated to them awhile back. The museum literally had everything lock, stock, and barrel.... down to clay flower pots. I knew whom Charles and Ray Eames were at the time but I would say I have much more appreciation of their craft today than back then. It was fun coming across this PBS documentary. Its about hour and a half long. If you are a Modernism fan or an architecture student, you owe yourself to watch this excellent documentary. Watch the Full Documentary ...
