The intracellular transfer of information (biological activation/inhibition) through a signal pathway. In each signal transduction system, an activation/inhibition signal from a biologically active molecule (hormone, neurotransmitter) is mediated via the coupling of a receptor/enzyme to a second messenger system or to an ion channel. Signal transduction plays an important role in activating cellular functions, cell differentiation, and cell proliferation. Examples of signal transduction systems are the GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID-postsynaptic receptor-calcium ion channel system, the receptor-mediated T-cell activation pathway, and the receptor-mediated activation of phospholipases. Those coupled to membrane depolarization or intracellular release of calcium include the receptor-mediated activation of cytotoxic functions in granulocytes and the synaptic potentiation of protein kinase activation. Some signal transduction pathways may be part of larger signal transduction pathways; for example, protein kinase activation is part of the platelet activation signal pathway.

Anaphylaxis to cashew nut was more common than to peanut (74.1% v 30.5%). Children with cashew allergy are at risk of anaphylaxis.  (+info)

Nickel deficiency disrupts metabolism of ureides, amino acids, and organic acids of young pecan foliage. (2/11)

The existence of nickel (Ni) deficiency is becoming increasingly apparent in crops, especially for ureide-transporting woody perennials, but its physiological role is poorly understood. We evaluated the concentrations of ureides, amino acids, and organic acids in photosynthetic foliar tissue from Ni-sufficient (Ni-S) versus Ni-deficient (Ni-D) pecan (Carya illinoinensis [Wangenh.] K. Koch). Foliage of Ni-D pecan seedlings exhibited metabolic disruption of nitrogen metabolism via ureide catabolism, amino acid metabolism, and ornithine cycle intermediates. Disruption of ureide catabolism in Ni-D foliage resulted in accumulation of xanthine, allantoic acid, ureidoglycolate, and citrulline, but total ureides, urea concentration, and urease activity were reduced. Disruption of amino acid metabolism in Ni-D foliage resulted in accumulation of glycine, valine, isoleucine, tyrosine, tryptophan, arginine, and total free amino acids, and lower concentrations of histidine and glutamic acid. Ni deficiency also disrupted the citric acid cycle, the second stage of respiration, where Ni-D foliage contained very low levels of citrate compared to Ni-S foliage. Disruption of carbon metabolism was also via accumulation of lactic and oxalic acids. The results indicate that mouse-ear, a key morphological symptom, is likely linked to the toxic accumulation of oxalic and lactic acids in the rapidly growing tips and margins of leaflets. Our results support the role of Ni as an essential plant nutrient element. The magnitude of metabolic disruption exhibited in Ni-D pecan is evidence of the existence of unidentified physiological roles for Ni in pecan.  (+info)

Phylogeny and taxonomy of the North American clade of the Ceratocystis fimbriata complex. (3/11)

Ceratocystis fimbriata is a widely distributed, plant pathogenic fungus that causes wilts and cankers on many woody hosts. Earlier phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences revealed three geographic clades within the C. fimbriata complex that are centered respectively in North America, Latin America and Asia. This study looked for cryptic species within the North American clade. The internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) of the rDNA were sequenced, and phylogenetic analysis indicated that most isolates from the North American clade group into four host-associated lineages, referred to as the aspen, hickory, oak and cherry lineages, which were isolated primarily from wounds or diseased trees of Populus, Carya, Quercus and Prunus, respectively. A single isolate collected from P. serotina in Wisconsin had a unique ITS sequence. Allozyme electromorphs also were highly polymorphic within the North American clade, and the inferred phylogenies from these data were congruent with the ITS-rDNA analyses. In pairing experiments isolates from the aspen, hickory, oak and cherry lineages were interfertile only with other isolates from their respective lineages. Inoculation experiments with isolates of the four host-associated groupings showed strong host specialization by isolates from the aspen and hickory lineages on Populus tremuloides and Carya illinoensis, respectively, but isolates from the oak and cherry lineages did not consistently reveal host specialization. Morphological features distinguish isolates in the North American clade from those of the Latin American clade (including C. fimbriata sensu stricto). Based on the phylogenetic evidence, interfertility, host specialization and morphology, the oak and cherry lineages are recognized as the earlier described C. variospora, the poplar lineage as C. populicola sp. nov., and the hickory lineage as C. caryae sp. nov. A new species associated with the bark beetle Scolytus quadrispinosus on Carya is closely related to C. caryae and is described as C. smalleyi.  (+info)

Estimation of multilocus linkage disequilibria in diploid populations with dominant markers. (4/11)

Analysis of population structure and organization with DNA-based markers can provide important information regarding the history and evolution of a species. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis based on allelic associations between different loci is emerging as a viable tool to unravel the genetic basis of population differentiation. In this article, we derive the EM algorithm to obtain the maximum-likelihood estimates of the linkage disequilibria between dominant markers, to study the patterns of genetic diversity for a diploid species. The algorithm was expanded to estimate and test linkage disequilibria of different orders among three dominant markers and can be technically extended to manipulate an arbitrary number of dominant markers. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm is validated by an example of population genetic studies of hickory trees, native to southeastern China, using dominant random amplified polymorphic DNA markers. Extensive simulation studies were performed to investigate the statistical properties of this algorithm. The precision of the estimates of linkage disequilibrium between dominant markers was compared with that between codominant markers. Results from simulation studies suggest that three-locus LD analysis displays increased power of LD detection relative to two-locus LD analysis. This algorithm is useful for studying the pattern and amount of genetic variation within and among populations.  (+info)

Airborne pollen of Carya, Celtis, Cupressus, Fraxinus and Pinus in the metropolitan area of Monterrey Nuevo Leon, Mexico. (5/11)

The concentration of pollen grains in the atmosphere over the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, was analyzed throughout a year from March 2003-February 2004, focused on the genus Carya, Celtis, Cupressus, Fraxinus and Pinus owing to their interest as etiological pollinosis agents in diverse regions of the world. A 7-day Hirst type volumetric spore and pollen trap was located on a building roof of the city at 15 m from ground level for continuous sampling. The total quantity of pollen recorded for the study period was 21,083 grains/m(3), corresponding to 49.75 % of the taxa of interest. February and March were the months with higher pollen amounts in the air with 7,525 and 2,781 grains/m(3), respectively, and amounted to 49 % of total year through pollen. Fraxinus was the genus which contributed to the largest amount of pollen with 28 % of total grains (5,935 grains/m(3)) followed by Cupressus with 13 % (2,742 grains/ m(3)). Celtis, Pinus and Carya contributed with 5.3 % , 2.7 % , and 0.6 % of total pollen, respectively. These results indicate that Fraxinus and Cupressus are present in the area in sufficient quantity to indicate likely involvement in the origin of allergic disorders in the human population.  (+info)

Chinese hickory (Carya cathayensis) has become one of the important economic forest crops in Zhejiang and Anhui Provinces in China. In May 2009, sporadic occurrence of leaf damage by anthracnose in C. cathayensis was observed in Linan city, Zhejiang Province. During May 2011, nearly 50% of Chinese hickory orchards in Zhejiang Province were affected by anthracnose disease. Symptoms were extensive with lesions on stems and leaves. Under wet conditions, orange masses of conidia were produced in acervuli in the center of lesions. Infected tissue samples were surface sterilized with 1.5% sodium hypochlorite for 1.5 min, plated on 2% potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated at 26°C in the dark for 1 week. Developing colonies were gray and contained masses of orange conidia. Conidia were hyaline, aseptate, straight with rounded or bulbous ends, and averaged 15.3 ± 1.7 μm long and 2.5 ± 0.8 μm wide. The ribosomal internal transcribed spacers ITS1 and ITS2 were amplified with primers ITS1/ITS4 ...
Along with milk and eggs, vegetables were an integral part of our diet in the mountains. The vegetables most commonly used in our community were green beans, corn, potatoes, pumpkins, cucumbers, cabbage and tomatoes. We always had mustard and turnip greens, which we cooked and sometimes just ate raw. In the spring there was poke, the first green we looked for after frost had gone from the ground. Spring also brought us hickory chickens.. Hickory chickens were what we called the spring mushrooms named morels. Every April, Father went into the hills and gathered a bag of hickory chickens. I asked him why he called them hickory chickens and he replied because they tasted like chicken, only better, and he found them under hickory trees. In some parts of the mountains they are called dry-land fish and people insist they taste like oyster.. -Sidney Saylor Farr - More than Moonshine. --. Ive only seen one morel growing near here. The spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (AIV) (H5N1) underlines the potential for global AIV movement through birds. The phylogenies of AIV genes from avian hosts usually separate into Eurasian and North American clades, reflecting limited bird migration between the hemispheres. However, mounting evidence that some H6 sequences from North America cluster with Eurasian subtype H6 sequences calls the strict hemispheric divide into question. We conducted a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the extent and timing of cross-hemisphere movements by the H6 gene. Results suggested that Eurasian H6 subtype has invaded North America several times, with the first invasions occurring 10 years before the first detection of invading isolates. The members of the North American clade decreased from 100% in the 1980s to 20% in the 2000s among H6 isolates from North America. Unraveling the reasons for this large-scale gene movement between hemispheres might identify drivers of global AIV circulation.

The Emerald Ash Borer has devastated eastern forests and woodlands. We have a friend who manages his woodlot for timber, and has a small ancient sawmill. He has dropped several hundred ash trees and has them up off the ground.. We only dealt with the few ash trees within impact distance of our house, by hiring that friend and his buddy, who is a professional tree cutter. They used a pulley and a hand winch to force the trees to fall away from the house. I had wanted to use the trunks, ash is a great wood for everything you can use wood for, but that is when my shoulders gave it up. So they just laid there.. We have hickory hardwood floors, mostly, with a walnut border. But there are two boards that turned out to be oak, and one that was ash, from the lumber company. You couldnt tell because hickory is so very different from board to board until we were sanding and finishing.. An ash floor would be a thing of beauty, or a set of kitchen cabinets, but of course now that tree is effectively ...

Another very interesting member of the mulberry family is the osage orange (Maclura pomifera). Native to the midwestern and southeastern United States, this species is also known as the hedge apple because it was planted in thicket-like hedge rows before the advent of barbed wire fences. The fruit is neither an orange nor an apple, although it approaches the size of those fruits. Like the breadfruit and jackfruit, it is a true multiple fruit composed of numerous separate ovaries, each arising from a separate female flower. In fact, the bumpy surface of the fruit is due to the numerous, tightly-packed ovaries of the female flowers. The black hairs on the surface of the fruit are styles, each arising from a separate ovary. The wood of osage orange was highly prized by the Osage Indians of Arkansas and Missouri for bows. In fact, osage orange is stronger than oak (Quercus) and as tough as hickory (Carya), and is considered by archers to be one of the finest native North American woods for bows. In ...
All non-African species belong to a clade that probably originated in Asia. Here, Bayesian and parsimony analyses produced congruent topologies. Of the four investigated European species, three are present also in Africa (E. major, E. fragilis, and E. campylopoda) and they belong to the basal grade/clade of African species. The European species Ephedra distachya has a broad distribution extending from Spain to Russia and China, but is absent in Africa. The two representatives of E. distachya included in this study are highly supported within one of the Asian clades. According to our results, Ephedra procera, which is generally considered a subspecies of E. major, is instead related to Ephedra equisetina. This finding should be further investigated with a more extensive species sampling. New World species are monophyletic and may have originated from within the Asian clade. They comprise two well-supported groups: a South American and a North American clade. Dry membranous bracts occur in the ...
Cerato-platanin (CP) is a 120 amino acids-long protein purified from the culture filtrate of Ceratocystis fimbriata (Ell. and Halst.) Davidson f. sp. platani Walter (Cfp), the causative agent of the canker stain of the plane trees (Pazzagli et al., 1999). CP contains 4 cysteines forming two S-S bridges, Cys20-57 and Cys60-115, and has a high percentage (40%) of hydrophobic residues. It is the founder member of the cerato- platanin family, and its N-terminal region is very similar to cerato-ulmin, a class II hydrophobin involved in the pathogenesis of Dutch elm disease (Del Sorbo et al., 2002). CP is located in the Cfp cell walls, and is early-detected in Cfp culture filtrates. In in vitro experimental conditions CP self-assembles, and interacts with the host plane leaves by eliciting phytoalexin synthesis, extended cell plasmolysis and crushing, and abundant starch accumulation in the chloroplasts (Bennici et al., 2005; Boddi et al., 2004; Pazzagli et al., 2005; Scala et al., 2004). cDNA ...

Azalea bushes thrive under the partial, filtered shade of pine, hickory and Oak, along with companion dogwood trees and camellia shrubs. Azalea plants prefer grown in partial shade ( 4 to 6 hours of sun but not during mid day ), and when planted next to buildings, the north side offers protection from cold damage. The flowers of the azalea plant last longer in filtered pine tree shade because of the cooling effect. Pine tree straw, pine cones, and pine tree bark make excellent mulch under azaleas because it both cools and acidifies the soil. When planting azalea bushes, the shrub should be put into a landscaped hole containing 1/2 soil & 1/2 organic matter, such as peat moss, leaf gro or pine bark. Azalea plants are very shallow rooted and do not do well in compacted or heavy clay soils ...
The fruit production tends to occur irregularly with some years producing larger crops than others (see mast year). Fruiting may begin when the tree is 4-6 years old, but large crops take 20 years. Total lifespan of J. nigra is about 130 years. Black walnut does not leaf out until late spring when the soil has warmed and all frost danger is past. Like other trees of the order Fagales, such as oaks, hickories, chestnuts, and birches, it is monoecious, with wind-pollinated catkins. Male and female flowers are in separate spikes, and the female flowers typically appear before the male on a single tree (dichogamy). As a consequence, self-pollination is unlikely. However, individual trees usually are not self-sterile; if they are not pollinated by neighboring trees, they may set self-fertilized seeds.[4] For maximum seed germination, the seeds should be cold-moist stratified for 3-4 months, although the exact time depends on the seed source.[4] The seedlings emerge in April or May and typically grow ...

Quercus prinus. Although common on dry, rocky soils, chestnut oak grows best in well-drained coves and bottomlands. As with most white oaks, its growth is slow on almost all sites. It can form pure stands on poorer sites of hillsides and mountain slopes, but is most often mixed with other species such as hickories, other oaks, and even pitch pines. The tree is a source of tannin, which can be used in the making of leather goods.. Chestnut oak leaves are deciduous, roughly-oval but often wider near the apex, and roughly-toothed. The shiny acorn is 1 to 1.5 inches long.. ...
Our horticulturist found this Luna Moth (Actias luna) caterpillar feeding on the leaves of a river birch tree. He placed his hand behind the caterpillar for scale. The Luna Moth lays its eggs on a variety of deciduous trees including walnut, beech, persimmon, and hickory. Within two weeks, caterpillars hatch from the eggs to begin feeding. The caterpillar will go through a series of molts before reaching its largest size, about 2 ½ inches. Once the Luna Moth caterpillar has fed enough to reach this size, it spins a dark brown, silken cocoon in leaf litter laying on the ground. After a few weeks, the winged adult Luna Moth emerges as a beautiful, large, nocturnal moth with stunning pale green wings, pure white body, and two wavy tails (actually extensions of the wings). Adult Luna Moths can have a wingspan of four inches, and they lack mouthparts. The Luna Moths fly in spring and summer, never eating as adults, and instead serve the sole purpose of reproducing. Luna Moth females emit ...

The 405-acre Humbug Marsh Unit is a key part of the Conservation Crescent of the lower Detroit River (which includes the Humbug mainland, Calf Island, Gibraltar Bay, and Sugar Island). Humbug Marsh is a hotspot of biodiversity in this urban landscape. Humbug Marsh was designated as Michigans first Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 2010. Most of the habitat is influenced by poorly drained soils subject to prolonged flooding during wet seasons. There are a few naturally formed higher elevation ridges along the shoreline that create a truly unique landscape. Large oaks exceeding 150 years old are scattered about, with a mosaic of shagbark hickory, ash and elm growing across the unit. Early successional meadow-like habitats are kept open and support plants for polllinators - such as wildflowers, bee balm, mountain mint, ironweed, goldenrods, milkweed - to name a few. The coastal wetlands are dominated by bulrushes, grasses, cattail, phragmites, and ...

To add a subtle flavor to your turkey, try scattering apple or hickory chips around the briquettes or burners on your grill. This adds a smoky accent to your bird. Keep an eye on your turkey while it cooks. You need to check for flare-ups. A flare-up occurs when fat drips onto the grate and causes a flame to shoot up. This can cause burned spots on your turkey. Flare-ups can be doused by a quick squirt from a spray bottle of water. The chance of a flare-up occurring can be reduced by placing a drip pan underneath your turkey. This will also collect any juices that drip from the turkey so that you can use them to make gravy later, if you like ...

Not too long ago, the majority of field hockey sticks were made out of wood. Nowadays, they are still used in great numbers. Most of them are made of hickory or mulberry. Modern field hockey sticks are primarily made of fiberglass and composite materials. These are mainly used at World Championship and Olympic competitions, as well as collegiate and high school levels. The sticks made of composite materials produce more power when hitting the ball, and provide enhanced durability and flexibility.. Again, if you are a novice, start by using a wooden stick, as it can easily absorb the shock and provide you with the necessary flexibility. Once you have acquired some experience and skills, switch to composite sticks, which are stiffer and provide increased power. If you plan on advancing your career, make sure to keep using composite sticks, as they will last you much longer and help you produce much more power on every hit.. ...

Matt Capps, who has pitched seven seasons in the big leagues through 2011, went 9-1 in 2006 on a team that lost 95 games. He served as Pittsburghs closer for two and a half years. Now that the smells of saffron, seafood, and garlic are swirling around downtown Belmont with the recent opening of Mas Tapas Bar, you might think that hickory is history.. It took me five months to build the place, and two weeks to grow out of it, he says of his little eat-in, take-out hideaway that opened in November just a hundred ...
