Cashew nut allergy is associated with a high risk of anaphylaxis. (1/11)

Cashew allergy is an evolving clinical problem. A retrospective chart review of 213 children with peanut or tree nut allergy was undertaken over a 42 month period. Anaphylaxis to cashew nut was more common than to peanut (74.1% v 30.5%). Children with cashew allergy are at risk of anaphylaxis.  (+info)

Nickel deficiency disrupts metabolism of ureides, amino acids, and organic acids of young pecan foliage. (2/11)

The existence of nickel (Ni) deficiency is becoming increasingly apparent in crops, especially for ureide-transporting woody perennials, but its physiological role is poorly understood. We evaluated the concentrations of ureides, amino acids, and organic acids in photosynthetic foliar tissue from Ni-sufficient (Ni-S) versus Ni-deficient (Ni-D) pecan (Carya illinoinensis [Wangenh.] K. Koch). Foliage of Ni-D pecan seedlings exhibited metabolic disruption of nitrogen metabolism via ureide catabolism, amino acid metabolism, and ornithine cycle intermediates. Disruption of ureide catabolism in Ni-D foliage resulted in accumulation of xanthine, allantoic acid, ureidoglycolate, and citrulline, but total ureides, urea concentration, and urease activity were reduced. Disruption of amino acid metabolism in Ni-D foliage resulted in accumulation of glycine, valine, isoleucine, tyrosine, tryptophan, arginine, and total free amino acids, and lower concentrations of histidine and glutamic acid. Ni deficiency also disrupted the citric acid cycle, the second stage of respiration, where Ni-D foliage contained very low levels of citrate compared to Ni-S foliage. Disruption of carbon metabolism was also via accumulation of lactic and oxalic acids. The results indicate that mouse-ear, a key morphological symptom, is likely linked to the toxic accumulation of oxalic and lactic acids in the rapidly growing tips and margins of leaflets. Our results support the role of Ni as an essential plant nutrient element. The magnitude of metabolic disruption exhibited in Ni-D pecan is evidence of the existence of unidentified physiological roles for Ni in pecan.  (+info)

Phylogeny and taxonomy of the North American clade of the Ceratocystis fimbriata complex. (3/11)

Ceratocystis fimbriata is a widely distributed, plant pathogenic fungus that causes wilts and cankers on many woody hosts. Earlier phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences revealed three geographic clades within the C. fimbriata complex that are centered respectively in North America, Latin America and Asia. This study looked for cryptic species within the North American clade. The internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) of the rDNA were sequenced, and phylogenetic analysis indicated that most isolates from the North American clade group into four host-associated lineages, referred to as the aspen, hickory, oak and cherry lineages, which were isolated primarily from wounds or diseased trees of Populus, Carya, Quercus and Prunus, respectively. A single isolate collected from P. serotina in Wisconsin had a unique ITS sequence. Allozyme electromorphs also were highly polymorphic within the North American clade, and the inferred phylogenies from these data were congruent with the ITS-rDNA analyses. In pairing experiments isolates from the aspen, hickory, oak and cherry lineages were interfertile only with other isolates from their respective lineages. Inoculation experiments with isolates of the four host-associated groupings showed strong host specialization by isolates from the aspen and hickory lineages on Populus tremuloides and Carya illinoensis, respectively, but isolates from the oak and cherry lineages did not consistently reveal host specialization. Morphological features distinguish isolates in the North American clade from those of the Latin American clade (including C. fimbriata sensu stricto). Based on the phylogenetic evidence, interfertility, host specialization and morphology, the oak and cherry lineages are recognized as the earlier described C. variospora, the poplar lineage as C. populicola sp. nov., and the hickory lineage as C. caryae sp. nov. A new species associated with the bark beetle Scolytus quadrispinosus on Carya is closely related to C. caryae and is described as C. smalleyi.  (+info)

Estimation of multilocus linkage disequilibria in diploid populations with dominant markers. (4/11)

Analysis of population structure and organization with DNA-based markers can provide important information regarding the history and evolution of a species. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis based on allelic associations between different loci is emerging as a viable tool to unravel the genetic basis of population differentiation. In this article, we derive the EM algorithm to obtain the maximum-likelihood estimates of the linkage disequilibria between dominant markers, to study the patterns of genetic diversity for a diploid species. The algorithm was expanded to estimate and test linkage disequilibria of different orders among three dominant markers and can be technically extended to manipulate an arbitrary number of dominant markers. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm is validated by an example of population genetic studies of hickory trees, native to southeastern China, using dominant random amplified polymorphic DNA markers. Extensive simulation studies were performed to investigate the statistical properties of this algorithm. The precision of the estimates of linkage disequilibrium between dominant markers was compared with that between codominant markers. Results from simulation studies suggest that three-locus LD analysis displays increased power of LD detection relative to two-locus LD analysis. This algorithm is useful for studying the pattern and amount of genetic variation within and among populations.  (+info)

Airborne pollen of Carya, Celtis, Cupressus, Fraxinus and Pinus in the metropolitan area of Monterrey Nuevo Leon, Mexico. (5/11)

The concentration of pollen grains in the atmosphere over the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, was analyzed throughout a year from March 2003-February 2004, focused on the genus Carya, Celtis, Cupressus, Fraxinus and Pinus owing to their interest as etiological pollinosis agents in diverse regions of the world. A 7-day Hirst type volumetric spore and pollen trap was located on a building roof of the city at 15 m from ground level for continuous sampling. The total quantity of pollen recorded for the study period was 21,083 grains/m(3), corresponding to 49.75 % of the taxa of interest. February and March were the months with higher pollen amounts in the air with 7,525 and 2,781 grains/m(3), respectively, and amounted to 49 % of total year through pollen. Fraxinus was the genus which contributed to the largest amount of pollen with 28 % of total grains (5,935 grains/m(3)) followed by Cupressus with 13 % (2,742 grains/ m(3)). Celtis, Pinus and Carya contributed with 5.3 % , 2.7 % , and 0.6 % of total pollen, respectively. These results indicate that Fraxinus and Cupressus are present in the area in sufficient quantity to indicate likely involvement in the origin of allergic disorders in the human population.  (+info)

Chinese hickory (Carya cathayensis) has become one of the important economic forest crops in Zhejiang and Anhui Provinces in China. In May 2009, sporadic occurrence of leaf damage by anthracnose in C. cathayensis was observed in Linan city, Zhejiang Province. During May 2011, nearly 50% of Chinese hickory orchards in Zhejiang Province were affected by anthracnose disease. Symptoms were extensive with lesions on stems and leaves. Under wet conditions, orange masses of conidia were produced in acervuli in the center of lesions. Infected tissue samples were surface sterilized with 1.5% sodium hypochlorite for 1.5 min, plated on 2% potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated at 26°C in the dark for 1 week. Developing colonies were gray and contained masses of orange conidia. Conidia were hyaline, aseptate, straight with rounded or bulbous ends, and averaged 15.3 ± 1.7 μm long and 2.5 ± 0.8 μm wide. The ribosomal internal transcribed spacers ITS1 and ITS2 were amplified with primers ITS1/ITS4 ...

The molecular basis for flowering was studied using an annual Long-day plant (LDP) A. thaliana[22, 63, 64], an annual Short-day plant (SDP) Oryza sativa[65, 66], a perennial poplar tree [17, 20] and a perennial hickory. The comparison of the flowering network across these four species may provide a better understanding of the regulatory pathways and molecular mechanisms regulating flowering.. Many major genes regulating flowering detected can be identical among all the four species by the common or homologs of the flowering genes (Additional file 10: Table S6). Several signal transduction, signal integration and floral organ development genes in this case have also been reported from the other three species [17, 20, 63-66]. In signal transduction stage, there are 48 hypothetical flowering or floral genes detected in hickory, including 12 SampleA specific genes, 19 SampleB specific genes and 21 common genes for SampleA and SampleB. The spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (AIV) (H5N1) underlines the potential for global AIV movement through birds. The phylogenies of AIV genes from avian hosts usually separate into Eurasian and North American clades, reflecting limited bird migration between the hemispheres. However, mounting evidence that some H6 sequences from North America cluster with Eurasian subtype H6 sequences calls the strict hemispheric divide into question. We conducted a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the extent and timing of cross-hemisphere movements by the H6 gene. Results suggested that Eurasian H6 subtype has invaded North America several times, with the first invasions occurring 10 years before the first detection of invading isolates. The members of the North American clade decreased from 100% in the 1980s to 20% in the 2000s among H6 isolates from North America. Unraveling the reasons for this large-scale gene movement between hemispheres might identify drivers of global AIV circulation.

Oak savanna is a fire-dependent, dynamic community characterized by spreading, open-grown trees and an herbaceous layer of sun-loving plants. The scattered trees or more dense groves of trees are mostly comprised of oaks. At Neal Smith NWR bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) is the dominant tree species interspersed with red oak (Q. rubra), black oak (Q. velutina), shagbark hickory (Carya ovata), and bitternut hickory (C. cordiformis). Trees that have grown in a savanna setting often have widely spreading branches, indicating they grew under conditions where they did not have to compete for light. The herbaceous vegetation, along with oak leaves, provides fuel for fire that is often slow and creeping, compared to the raging prairie fires. Historically, the grazing, browsing, and rubbing of bison and elk also provided disturbance in oak savannas and influenced the vegetation. Oak savannas often have open canopies, allowing dappled light to reach the ground layer. Savannas are mosaic communities with ...

Oak-hickory forests comprise 29% of the 31 million hectares of forest land in the Upper Midwest (IL, IN, IA, MI, MN, MO and WI). The oak species group is the most important aggregation of hardwoods in the United States. Oak decline and oak wilt are responsible for much of the observed oak deterioration and mortality in the midwestern forests. In addition, new exotic pathogens, such as Phytophthora ramorum (cause of Sudden Oak Death) and Raffaelea quercivora (cause of Japanese oak wilt), are potential threats to the health of oaks in these forests. Our oak disease research addresses both the need for early detection of any unintentionally introduced exotic pathogens and for new or refined management tools for well-established pathogens, such as Ceratocystis fagacearum (cause of oak wilt in the USA).. Hickories are an important component of many forest associations in the eastern United States, particularly various oak-hickory cover types. Sites impacted by hickory decline or dieback and mortality ...
Lophocampa caryae, the hickory tussock moth or hickory halisidota, is a moth in the family Erebidae, widely distributed in the eastern half of North America. Like most species in its family, the caterpillars acquire chemical defenses from their host plants, so they are potentially toxic or unpalatable, but this species is also venomous. The behaviour and aposematic coloration of the larvae suggests chemical protection in this stage, although they have not been analyzed for alkaloid or cardenolide content, nor have the adults.[citation needed] There is one generation per year. The larva, a caterpillar, is completely covered in long, hairlike setae arranged in spreading tufts. Most are white, but there are black tufts along the middle of the back, and four long black hair pencils, two near the front, and two near the back. These hairs cause itchy rashes (contact dermatitis) in many people, particularly those prone to allergies, and may resemble exposure to urushiol. They are microscopically barbed ...

According to the Southern Appalachian Forest Coalition, there was no logging here above 3,680 feet, leaving impressive montane-oak hickory and high elevation red oak forests. Head down the Moccasin Trail from the park office and youll quickly be surrounded by some of the largest existing trees of their kind. Bay trees, sweet gums, persimmons and pawpaws all reach heights youve not seen before; bald cypress with trunks 10 feet in diameter and poplars reaching 130 feet are not uncommon, as are 100-foot-high Atlantic white cedars.. Pisgah National Forest. Snooks Nose Trail. This trail begins below 1,800 feet in elevation, and within a mile and a half reaches the 3,200-foot mark, above which no logging took place (overall elevation gain on this 3.9-mile trail is just under 3,000 feet). An in vitro fertilization example may help to clarify this point. Assume that a woman from Dr. Millers hometown of Hickory has successful in vitro fertilization in a medical center in Charlotte, North Carolina, 64 miles distant. An egg and sperm unite in a Petri dish, leading to a unique new genetic complement. Can the woman announce to her neighbors that she is pregnant? Should her obstetrician in Hickory begin providing prenatal care? Her fertilized ovum resides in a different city. Clearly, not until the fertilized ovum successfully implants in her uterus (or elsewhere) is she pregnant. Similarly, with in vivo fertilization in the fallopian tubes, a woman is not pregnant until the ovum implants ...

The blog Neuroself, written by Peter Freed, who is, I think, a psychiatrist as well as a psychotherapist, is always interesting for anyone who is fascinated by the human mind. He has live-blogged the US Presidential and Vice-Presidential debates, and very interesting its been. He has been looking at the body language to try to learn about the state of mind of the candidates and, as or more importantly still, to try to predict how the audience will react to the paralinguistic communication. Most of what was said wasnt especially interesting or memorable in itself, but the behaviour of the candidates, the impression their bodies left, will be remembered and may influence voting. (I didnt watch any of the debates, Im quoting my sources ...

My bipedal co-blogger- and co-personality- has the idea that a hedgehog is little more than an an interesting and attractive thing to have around. You can almost hear his brain creaking as he tries to work out why I do what I do. Humans assume that if you cant see it it doesnt exist, so here in the country he says things like look at that nice juicy beetle over there, why dont you eat it?. If I could speak homsap Id say, Cos its poisonous, you idiot, and Ive known that since it was fifty yards away. But its a tricky idea to express when your common communicative vocabulary consists of sticking your nose in the air and scratching your ear with your hind leg. Oh, and playing with socks, of course. Hes never, ever going to get the sock thing, yknow. I could just stop doing it, but it becomes a habit after a while. Maybe I should carry a white stick, see if he gets the point. So anyway he keeps shoving this beetle in front of me and expecting me to eat the thing. Its just like the one ...

At about 16:05 eastern time, a Cessna 310C lost engine power and crashed in the ensuing forced landing at Reidsville Municipal Airport. The pilot and four passengers suffered minor injuries, but the airplane was destroyed. The flight had originated earlier in the day at Niagara Falls, N.Y., and had made a fuel stop in Hickory, N.C., departing about 14:15. All four fuel tanks had been topped off at Hickory. The pilot took off on the main (tip) tanks, cruised on the inboard tanks until they were nearly empty, then switched back to the main tanks. After about 20 minutes, the engines began to surge and lose power. The pilot diverted to Reidsville but could not make the runway. The pilot said the...

SNOWED IN?. Its that time of the year again. The cold wind is blowing in, theres frost on your windshield, the ground is slick and snow can be as high as your knees. We all have fun memories that involve snow and the Christmassy feel. This year, our earliest sign of snow appeared on December 4, 2016, much earlier than anticipated. Ice and snow can be challenging for everyone, particularly seniors. How can you stay healthy and safe this holiday season? Here are a few tips that we think are key:. 1. Fall prevention: Per Dr. Wang from the Stanford Hospital, falls are the leading cause of death in women and men over the age of 65. It is imperative that you stay safe. Watch out for black ice; sometimes, especially on sidewalks, it is difficult to see or notice black ice on the floor. To avoid this, wear shoes that have traction soles and update your prescriptions for glasses, if possible, to prevent falls and increase the firm grip on the ground.. 2. Keep warm: According to CDC, hypothermia is ...

The Leekers hosted Trevors Tournament on June 25at the ball field complex on the west edge of town. We may assume that there are some things, many things, which children need to learn, and which a significantly large number cannot learn directly from their families. Which doesnt mean they cant learn them at home or elsewhere. The modern world should have changed completely the way education is carried out, but a combination of lack of imagination, the desire of governments to monopolise the minds of the young, and the demands of teachers unions, have meant that little has changed. It is simply not necessary to herd children into buildings and environments that are often unpleasant, to waste many hours a day throughout their entire childhood being instructed in things they do not need to know, and failing to learn the things they do. Attention is invariably focused, and the law tends to encourage it, or even require it, on those children who cannot or do not want to ...

Most of the Southern Flying Squirrels range is east of the Mississippi River, but it occurs west of the river in central Texas, and as far south as Honduras, in Central America. Like the Northern Flying Squirrel, it has a gliding membrane (patagium) and a flattened tail. Flying squirrels are nocturnal and are much smaller than most tree squirrels, which are diurnal. Although primarily associated with hardwoods, especially oaks and hickories, Southern Flying Squirrels inhabit forests of diverse types, and even live in cities and suburbs. A natural cavity or old woodpecker hole in a live or dead tree is the typical nest site. Where the ranges of the two species of flying squirrels overlap, it appears the Southern Flying Squirrel may out-compete its larger relative. Also known as: ...
The Çankırı Basin is one of the largest Cenozoic basins in Central Anatolia, Turkey and contains possible economic hydrocarbon and evaporite reserves. Gypsum is the dominant mineral in the evaporite-bearing Pliocene deposits of the Çankırı Basin. In claystones, the abundance of smectite, dolomite, illite/mica and chlorite in association with minor amounts of mixed-layer chlorite-smectite, mica-vermiculite, amphibole, serpentine, quartz and feldspar together indicate an alkaline environment. Minor kaolinite is also present in some clay samples. Smectite is both detrital and authigenic. Palynological analysis revealed the existence of a mixed forest (Pinus, Cathaya, Tsuga, Cedrus, Abies, Quercus, Ulmus, Juglans, Pterocarya, Acer, Carya, Carpinus, Fagus) dominated by Pinus with a widespread herbaceous understory (Poaceae) interspersed sparsely with open areas occupied by Asteraceae. This flora reflects warm-temperate and humid climatic condition. δ13C analyses have shown that the vegetation ...

This study examines a genome-wide dataset of 678 Short Tandem Repeat loci characterized in 444 individuals representing 29 Native American populations as well as the Tundra Netsi and Yakut populations from Siberia. Using these data, the study tests four current hypotheses regarding the hierarchical distribution of neutral genetic variation in native South American populations: (1) the western region of South America harbors more variation than the eastern region of South America, (2) Central American and western South American populations cluster exclusively, (3) populations speaking the Chibchan-Paezan and Equatorial-Tucanoan language stock emerge as a group within an otherwise South American clade, (4) Chibchan-Paezan populations in Central America emerge together at the tips of the Chibchan-Paezan cluster. This study finds that hierarchical models with the best fit place Central American populations, and populations speaking the Chibchan-Paezan language stock, at a basal position or separated ...
It has been estimated that about 1.1% of the population of the United States, over three million Americans, have peanut or tree nut allergies. The peanut is actually not a nut at all but is a legume, more closely related to beans and peas. While not the most common form of allergy, peanuts are the number one cause of fatal anaphylactic reactions triggered by food allergies in the United States. The proportion of children who have nut allergy also appears to be on the increase and, while some people are only allergic to one type of nut, others have multiple nut allergies. It is not an allergy that people usually outgrow. These factors combine to give nut allergy a higher profile than some other types of allergic conditions.Nut allergies are more common in adults than children, despite the fact that food allergies are generally more prevalent in children. When children develop a food allergy it is usually during the first two years of life. Once they have reached three years of age it is accepted ...
