Nevertheless, much past and recent work has focused on domestic national averages, neglecting both the growing importance of international trade on household carbon footprint and the variation between households of different income levels and demographics. Using consumer expenditure surveys and multi-country life cycle assessment techniques, this paper analyzes the global and distributional aspects of American household carbon footprint. We find that due to recently increased international trade, 30% of total US household CO2 impact in 2004 occurred outside the US. ASU is at the forefront of LCA research, and I was fortunate enough to take the Life Cycle Assessment for Civil Systems class with Dr. Mikhail Chester. This class allowed me to perform a preliminary life cycle assessment on microbial electrochemical cell (MXC) technology that SCEB is researching as part of a Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) project. Currently, forward operating bases (FOBs) receive all of their potable and non-potable water in tanker truck convoys that utilize a lot of fuel for transportation and are targets for insurgents in hostile areas resulting in casualties. We propose that MXCs can be used to treat wastewater onsite to produce non-potable water for reuse, thereby reducing the amount of water that must be shipped to the FOBs. My analysis allowed me to compare the status quo treatment systems with different MXC configurations. The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) reviews greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our fleets operations on an annual basis to understand our effect on Orange Countys vehicle air emission levels. Additionally, we review how overall emissions levels are affected when drivers shift from private vehicles to public transit. A reduction of congestion on our streets and freeways is expected when public transit is used. To quantify GHG emissions, the OCTA uses guidance from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). APTA has set standards for Quantifying Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Transit.
