Intermittent bowel obstruction due to a retained wireless capsule endoscope in a patient with a small bowel carcinoid tumour. (1/37)

A 43-year-old man with a history of metastatic carcinoid disease is presented. The patient had symptoms of chronic intermittent abdominal pain two years after undergoing a wireless capsule endoscopy procedure. Radiological examinations revealed a retained capsule endoscope, and the patient underwent exploratory laparotomy with capsule retrieval. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case presentation of chronic, partial small bowel obstruction caused by unrecognized retention of a capsule endoscope.  (+info)

Suprapapillary needle puncture for common bile duct access: laboratory profile. (2/37)

BACKGROUND: [corrected] Biliary cannulation to perform endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography may be difficult due to technical reasons and often is necessary to perform papillotomy, where complications as pancreatitis and perforation may occur AIM: To show minimal complications by a new model of biliary access by means of the suprapapillary needle puncture and its laboratory profile. PATIENTS AND METHODS: After the approval of the protocol by the Scientific Ethics Committee of the institution a free and informed consent was signed by all patients participating in the study. From July 2003 to August 2004, fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 30 patients were selected for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, using the suprapapillary puncture technique. All patients remained hospitalized, fasting and with basal hydroelectrolytic replacement, were clinically followed up and samples for the determination of serum amylase, lipase and C-RP (C-reactive protein) were collected before and 4 h, 12 h and 24 h after the procedure and reevaluated 60 days after the procedure. Laboratory parameters were submitted to statistical study using analysis of variance for repeated measurements. Multiple comparisons were made based on Wald's statistics RESULTS: The technique was successful in 93.4% (28/30) of the patients. No statistically significant difference regarding to the laboratory profile were observed. Complications related to the technique of papillary puncture occurred in 1/28 patients by not using the guide wire and in 1/28 where mild hemorrhage after dilation of the papillary fistula occurred. Regarding complications related to therapeutic procedures, there were 2/28 retroduodenal perforations, with one (1/30) following unsuccessful puncture and another due to the passage of Dormia's basket through the dilated fistula path. All patients submitted to diagnostic puncture and evaluated 60 days after the procedure presented with the major duodenal papilla of normal aspect. The patients with dilation of the suprapapillary fistula showed the fistula continuing to drain clear bile CONCLUSION: Suprapapillary puncture allows investigative and therapeutic procedures without significant increases in amylase, lipase and C-RP. Patients submitted to diagnostic puncture present complete recovery of the papilla, while dilation of the fistula maintains it pervious later on, but without complications.  (+info)

Capsule endoscopy retention as a helpful tool in the management of a young patient with suspected small-bowel disease. (3/37)

Capsule endoscopy is an easy and painless procedure permitting visualization of the entire small-bowel during its normal peristalsis. However, important problems exist concerning capsule retention in patients at risk of small bowel obstruction. The present report describes a young patient who had recurrent episodes of overt gastrointestinal bleeding of obscure origin, 18 years after small bowel resection in infancy for ileal atresia. Capsule endoscopy was performed, resulting in capsule retention in the distal small bowel. However, this event contributed to patient management by clearly identifying the site of obstruction and can be used to guide surgical intervention, where an anastomotic ulcer is identified.  (+info)

Olympus capsule endoscopy for small bowel examination. (4/37)

The video capsule endoscope has been developed to allow for direct examination of the small bowel in a safe, noninvasive and well-tolerated manner. The Olympus capsule endoscope, recently developed, with technology based on a charge-coupled device (CCD) and with electronic enhancement of image quality, differs from the Given capsule by a high-resolution CCD and an external real-time image viewer (External Viewer) monitor. The most frequent indications for video capsule endoscopy of the small bowel are the diagnosis of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, angiodysplasia, Crohn's disease, celiac disease, hereditary polyposis syndromes, small bowel tumors. The following technical imaging review examines the current data and recent developments pertaining to diagnosis of small bowel lesions by video capsule endoscopy: indications, contraindications, diagnostic yield, spectrum of lesions.  (+info)

Small bowel capsule endoscopy in 2007: indications, risks and limitations. (5/37)

Capsule endoscopy has revoluzionized the study of the small bowel by providing a reliable method to evaluate, endoscopically, the entire small bowel. In the last six years several papers have been published exploring the possible role of this examination in different clinical conditions. At the present time capsule endoscopy is generally recommended as a third examination, after negative bidirectional endoscopy, in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. A growing body of evidence suggests also an important role for this examination in other clinical conditions such as Crohn's disease, celiac disease, small bowel polyposis syndromes or small bowel tumors. The main complication of this examination is the retention of the device at the site of a previously unknown small bowel stricture. However there are also some other open issues mainly due to technical limitations of this tool (which is not driven from remote control, is unable to take biopsies, to insufflate air, to suck fluids or debris and sometimes to correctly size and locate lesions). The recently developed double balloon enteroscope, owing to its capability to explore a large part of the small bowel and to take targeted biopsies, although being invasive and time consuming, can overcome some limitations of capsule endoscopy. At the present time, in the majority of clinical conditions (i.e. obscure GI bleeding), the winning strategy seems to be to couple these two techniques to explore the small bowel in a painless, safe and complete way (with capsule endoscopy) and to define and treat the lesions identified (with double balloon enteroscopy).  (+info)

Esophageal capsule endoscopy. (6/37)

Capsule endoscopy is now considered as the first imaging tool for small bowel examination. Recently, new capsule endoscopy applications have been developed, such as esophageal capsule endoscopy and colon capsule endoscopy. Esophageal capsule endoscopy in patients with suspected esophageal disorders is feasible and safe, and could be also an alternative procedure in those patients refusing upper endoscopy. Although large-scale studies are needed to confirm its utility in GERD and cirrhotic patients, current results are encouraging and open a new era in esophageal examination.  (+info)

Colon capsule endoscopy. (7/37)

Wireless capsule endoscopy has become the first imaging tool for small bowel examination. Recently, new capsule endoscopy applications have been developed, such as esophageal capsule endoscopy and colon capsule endoscopy. Clinical trials results have shown that colon capsule endoscopy is feasible, accurate and safe in patients suffering from colonic diseases. It could be a good alternative in patients refusing conventional colonoscopy or when it is contraindicated. Upcoming studies are needed to demonstrate its utility for colon cancer screening and other indications such us ulcerative colitis. Comparative studies including both conventional and virtual colonoscopy are also required.  (+info)

Patency and Agile capsules. (8/37)

Small bowel strictures can be missed by current diagnostic methods. The Patency capsule is a new non-endoscopic dissolvable capsule which has as an objective of checking the patency of digestive tract, in a non-invasive manner. The available clinical trials have demonstrated that the Patency capsule is a good tool for assessment of the functional patency of the small bowel, and it allows identification of those patients who can safely undergo a capsule endoscopy, despite clinical and radiographic evidence of small-bowel obstruction. Some cases of intestinal occlusion have been reported with the Patency capsule, four of them needed surgery. So, a new capsule with two timer plugs (Agile capsule) has been recently developed in order to minimize the risk of occlusion. This new device stars its dissolution process earlier (30 h after ingestion) and its two timer plugs have been designed to begin the disintegration even when the device is blocked in a tight stricture.  (+info)

Feasibility study shows that a magnetic maneuverable capsule is safe and well-tolerated in the stomach of healthy volunteers. A study from researchers in Germany showed that magnetic maneuvering of a modified capsule endoscope in the stomach of healthy volunteers under clinical conditions is safe, well-tolerated, and technically feasible. Maneuverability of the capsule within the stomach was excellent and visualization of the gastric mucosa, the inner lining of the stomach, was satisfactory in the majority of subjects. Apart from a single experiment performed with a supervising flexible gastroscope, this was the first study to use the system in the stomach of healthy subjects. The study appears in the January issue of GIE: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).. Phase I: Participants swallow the tethered capsule endoscope (TCE) so that the distal end of the TCE enters the stomach. The TCE is then slowly withdrawn by the physician in order to visualize the gastroesophageal junction and the esophagus in a retrograde fashion until the upper esophageal sphincter is reached. The image acquisition process is repeated and the participant may be asked to swallow the TCE in up to 7 different positions with 2 swallows per position (no more than 20 swallows total ...
Capsule endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to detect digestive disorders. Capsule endoscopy is a method to record the images of digestive tract which can be further used in diagnosis of the intestinal diseases.
The title of this post might be stretching the truth since endoscopes have been around for quite a long while now, but the PillCam ESO 2 is different from the rest as it was specially designed to view the inner lining of the esophagus. Recently the FDA has stamped their mark of approval for the PillCam ESO 2, and this capsule endoscope from Given Imaging Limited of Israel will be marketed via InScope, a division of a Johnson & Johnson company. Getting the PillCam ESO 2 to work is dead easy - just swallow it and let the miniature cameras lined up on both ends to start snapping away.. A trio of sensor arrays are placed on the patients chest at strategic places, which are subsequently hooked up to a data recorder that is worn on a belt around the waist. When the capsule is swallowed, the patient must lie down, where he/she will then be raised in a series of inclinations within a period of 5 minutes. This will the PillCam ESO 2 to travel through the entire esophagus by riding those peristaltic ...
Physicians can now extract exam data without processing capsules post-ingestion with HIPAA-compliant cloud-based exam management systemSARATOGA, Calif. - September 7, 2017 - Today Silicon Valley medical device innovator CapsoVision, Inc. announced the full U.S. launch of CapsoCloud™, a groundbreaking exam management system that allows physicians to extract exam data from the CapsoCam Plus® small bowel capsule endoscope system without the need to process capsules post-ingestion.
Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) has been intensively researched recently due to its convenience for diagnosis and extended detection coverage of some diseases. Typically, a full recording covering entire human digestive system requires about 8 to 12 hours for a patient carrying a capsule endoscope and a portable image receiver/recorder unit, which produces 120,000 image frames on average. In spite of the benefits of close examination, WCE based test has a barrier for quick diagnosis such that a trained diagnostician must examine a huge amount of images for close investigation, normally over 2 hours. The main purpose of our work is to present a novel machine vision approach to reduce diagnosis time by automatically detecting duplicated recordings caused by backward camera movement, typically containing redundant information, in small intestine. The developed technique could be integrated with a visualization tool which supports intelligent inspection method, such as automatic play speed control. ...

The US Meals and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first capsule in August 2001 [1,two]. It had been subsequently replaced via the M2A Moreover capsule, that has now been renamed the PillCam SB. The PillCam is currently in its 3rd technology (PillCam SB3). This Model has an improved resolution along with a variable frame price. The frame amount raises to six frames for each next when it is actually shifting speedily, as while in the duodenal sweep, and slows to two frames for every next when going slowly but surely or when stationary ...

The 1966 movie "Fantastic Voyage" took us on a trip through the human body. Today, a device called the PillCam is capturing the essence of that travel. The PillCam, a small digital camera about the size of a large vitamin tablet, is allowing direct visualization of the small intestine. Until recently, the small intestine, a hollow tube nearly 18 feet long, has been a diagnostic black hole. Traditional endoscopy allows visualization of both ends, leaving the greater part in the middle unseen. The various radiological imaging technologies are less than perfect in diagnosing small bowel disorders.. The PillCam, manufactured by Given Imaging, appears to be filling part of the void with its unique ability to capture images of the small intestine as it transits.. To perform a study using the PillCam, there are no special recommended bowel preparations. Patients should drink clear liquids from noon the day before the procedure, and from 10 p.m. should be NPO (nothing by mouth) except for sips of water ...
By Jonathan J. Darrow. In January, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the PillCam COLON 2 as a minimally-invasive means of viewing the colon, a development that is sure to be welcomed by U.S. patients who currently undergo an estimated 14 million colonoscopies each year. While the approval represents a major step forward, the PillCam is unlikely to supplant current procedures just yet.. The colon has traditionally been examined via optical colonoscopy, a procedure perceived by many to be uncomfortable and embarrassing that involves insertion through the rectum of a 5-6 foot long flexible tube as part of an examination that can take 30 to 60 minutes. Air must be pumped in through the rectum in a process called "insufflation." Sedatives and pain medication are generally used to help relieve discomfort. In contrast, the PillCam COLON contains a power source, light source, and two tiny cameras encapsulated in an easy-to-swallow pill that produces no pain or even sensation as ...
The medical controversy over whether vaccines may be linked to a gradual increase in autism continues. At least two studies by British physicians have come to contradictory conclusions about whether there is a link between autism and immunization efforts. While a 1998 study of a dozen children found a correlation between the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism, another study published in June 1999 looked at some 500 children and found no association. Both studies have been criticized by the respective opponents of the debate.. Approximately 400,000 people in the United States, males more often than females, are autistic. The condition has been associated with encephalitis, rubella and epilepsy, and 75 percent of autistics have some degree of mental retardation, according to the CDC.. According to the U.S. Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services 20th Annual Report to Congress, the number of autistic students has risen from 5,415 in 1991-92, the first year autism ...

Capsule Endoscopy is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Eight sensors will be place on the patients abdomen. The sensors will be attached to a Data Recorder that will be worn in a belt around the patients waist. The patient will be instructed to swallow the Pill Cam with a small amount of water. The sensors on the patients abdomen will transmit photographs to the Data Recorder as it passes through the digestive tract. The patient will go home and perform normal daily activities but will not be allowed to remove the sensors or Data Recorder. After 8 hours the patient will return to the hospital to have the Data Recorder removed and the sensors. The patient will be instructed to check their stool for passage of the capsule and to report it to the Physician. If the patient does not observe passage of the capsule they must refrain from having an MRI. An X-ray must be performed to determine if the capsule has been passed before an MRI can be performed.. In total, 181 patients with OGIB were recruited into the study. After exclusion of 28 patients 153 patients were randomized and CapsoCam SV-1 (n=78) or PillCam SB 3 (n=75) was administered. CapsoCam SV-1 detected more cases of bleeding (31/79, diagnostic yield 39.7%) compared with PillCam SB 3 (26/75, diagnostic yield 34.6%, NS). Transit time of both capsules was not different. Evaluation time with PillCam SB 3 was superior to CapsoCam SV-1 (27 vs. 40 min, P=0.01). In total, 95% of the physicians were satisfied with each capsule system and evaluation software. The acceptance rate of the patients to retrieve the CapsoCam SV-1 was high. Adverse events/serious adverse events were 17.9%/1.3% with CapsoCam SV-1 and 16%/0% with PillCam SB 3. Rebleeding rate was 28.75% within 3 months ...
The team compared the base-case strategy of no screening for Barretts esophagus with 2 competing screening strategies.. The first strategy included esophageal capsule endoscopy followed by upper endoscopy if Barretts was suspected.. Within this strategy, esophageal capsule endoscopy was followed by upper endoscopy if there was poor visualization.. The second strategy was standard sedated endoscopy followed by upper endoscopy with biopsy.. The researchers obtained cost estimates from a third-party payer perspective.. For each strategy the team determined lifetime costs, life-years gained, and numbers of esophageal cancers detected.. The researchers also determined death rates from esophageal cancer, and procedural deaths.. The research team found that initial endoscopy followed by upper endoscopy was more expensive but more effective compared with the no screening strategy.. Assuming a theoretical cohort of 10,000 patients with GERD, initial endoscopy followed by upper endoscopy cost ...
In Oct 2007, the FDA authorised a second small bowel capsule (EndoCapsule). Its got comparable features for the PillCam SB, but includes a charge-coupled product chip in place of a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor chip. FDA acceptance was primarily based on a review of fifty one clients with suspected tiny bowel bleeding who swallowed equally the PillCam SB and the EndoCapsule 40 minutes aside in randomized purchase [6]. The products were comparable, centered on the detection of normal as opposed to abnormal and in diagnostic capability. This study also shown that a capsule does not often journey axially but may perhaps tumble. Furthermore, non-axial movement implies incomplete mucosal visualization, among the constraints of your technologies ...
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Given Imaging Ltd. GIVN, +0.89% said after the closing bell on Tuesday that an analysis published in Endoscopy concluded that capsule endoscopy is the best method for detecting small bowel disease non-invasively. Using a database of 24 prospective studies comparing the companys PillCam SB, a form of capsule endoscopy, with another mode of diagnosis -- including push enteroscopy and colonoscopy -- the analysis determined that PillCam identified pathology in 70% of exams, double the yield of comparative methods. When individual pathologies were counted, 90% of the pathologies detected by capsule endoscopy could not be identified by any other method. The lead author of the study was Blair Lewis, clinical professor of medicine and gastroenterology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Wireless capsule endoscopy for gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a modern technology that has the potential to replace conventional endoscopy techniques. Capsule endoscopy is a pill-shaped device embedded with a camera, a coin battery, and a data transfer. Without a locomotion system, this capsule endoscopy can only passively travel inside the GI tract via natural peristalsis, thus causing several disadvantages such as inability to control and stop, and risk of capsule retention. Therefore, a locomotion system needs to be added to optimize the current capsule endoscopy. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art locomotion methods along with the desired locomotion features such as size, speed, power, and temperature and compares the properties of different methods. In addition, properties and motility mechanisms of the GI tract are described. The main purpose of this review is to understand the features of GI tract and diverse locomotion methods in order to create a future capsule endoscopy compatible

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common problem worldwide. The initial workup usually involves performing a bidirectional endoscopy. When negative, the small bowel could be the source of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding presenting as IDA. The next best diagnostic test is uncertain. Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is a non-invasive new technology that allows examination of the entire small bowel. Methods: We designed a randomized controlled pilot study to outline the challenges for conducting a full randomized controlled trial (RCT) to determine if WCE should be first-line investigation in such cases. 109 patients were enrolled; 55 intervention (WCE) & 54 controls (standard of care) (SC). Results: Two-years post-randomization there was no difference in anemia between the two groups. Conclusion: Few methodological hurdles for conducting a full RCT were identified ...

Laboratory professionals are comfortable with blood; after all, without it we wouldnt be able to perform many of the tests necessary for delivering quality healthcare to the people in our communities. We work with blood every day, often taking it from tubes lined with various kinds of anticoagulants to keep it from clotting, depending on the testing that we perform. But some of our patients already have trouble with clotting, due to bleeding and coagulation disorders. March is recognized as Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month, and the Hemophilia Federation of America is raising awareness on social media and educating the general public about the impact of these disorders.. Diagnosis and treatment of bleeding disorders, as with so many other disorders, begins in the lab. A patient who bleeds profusely from small injuries, or who is at familial risk for bleeding or clotting disorders, is sent for a blood draw and a coagulation workup. Basic coagulation testing usually starts with the collection of ...

During the early phases (phases 1 and 2), researchers assess safety, side effects, optimal dosages and risks/benefits. In the later phase (phase 3), researchers study whether the treatment works better than the current standard therapy. They also compare the safety of the new treatment with that of current treatments. Phase 3 trials include large numbers of people to make sure that the result is valid. There are also less common very early (phase 0) and later (phase 4) phases. Phase 0 trials are small trials that help researchers decide if a new agent should be tested in a phase 1 trial. Phase 4 trials look at long-term safety and effectiveness, after a new treatment has been approved and is on the market. ...

with great interest. We agree that full visualisation and imaging of the entire length of the small bowel is unsatisfactory at present and that capsule endoscopy (CE) is a novel technique and can be considered as a promising new approach for the diagnosis of obscure disease located in the small bowel.. The authors diagnosed Crohns disease (CD) in 12 of 17 patients with clinically suspected CD according to the findings of CE. The authors state that the majority of diagnostic lesions were located in the distal ileum. At least one colonoscopy had been performed prior to CE in 15 of 17 patients. Unfortunately, the investigators do not report whether or not they were able to explore the terminal ileum in all of these patients. Hence the important question arises of which endoscopic and histological findings had been observed in the terminal ileum of these 15 study patients prior to CE, and whether this clinical information may have affected the interpretation of the CE findings in this ...

The majority of patients had symptoms of diarrhoea (80%) and abdominal pain (83%),while 33% (n=86) had weight loss. Raised inflammatory markers were present in 65% (n=172) and 18% (n=47) were iron deficient. Nine per cent (n=25) of patients were on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). 94% of patients had colonoscopy prior to CE with TI biopsies in 60% (n=159). Although 20% (n=31/159) were macroscopically abnormal, 18 patients had normal TI histology with 13 showing non specific changes. Small bowel radiology was performed in 90% (n=239) prior to CE where 87% (n=207) were normal and 13% showed non-specific small bowel changes. CE was suggestive of Crohns disease with the presence of ulcers (,3), oedema, petechiae and erythema in 17% (n=45). On logistic regression, abdominal pain (p=0.01), diarrhoea (p=0.002) and hypoalbuminaemia (p=0.014) were predictive of Crohns disease on CE. ...

A self-guiding, self-centering endoscope system provides for the advance of a head of the endoscope through the lumen of an internal organ with minimal discomfort to the patient in which use of anesthesia is substantially eliminated. The guiding system is implemented through an algorithm controlled computer processing of 136 coordinate sectors of an electronic mask applied to a video output of the endoscope camera. This output is digitized by a video processing unit and fed into a computer module in which the algorithm compares derived gray scale values of the sectors with a pre-set gray scale parameter to differentiate between levels of varying reflectivity within and upon the walls of the lumen to, thereby, ascertain the best path for the head of the endoscope. Through the use of X- and Y-axis servo-amplifiers and motors, a real time correction of the position of the endoscope head is obtained relative to the center of the lumen.

Registration of pre-clinical images to physical space is indispensable for computer-assisted endoscopic interventions in operating rooms. Electromagnetically navigated endoscopic interventions are increasingly performed at current diagnoses and treatments. Such interventions use an electromagnetic tracker with a miniature sensor that is usually attached at an endoscope distal tip to real time track endoscope movements in a pre-clinical image space. Spatial alignment between the electromagnetic tracker (or sensor) and pre-clinical images must be performed to navigate the endoscope to target regions. This paper proposes an adaptive marker-free registration method that uses a multiple point selection strategy. This method seeks to address an assumption that the endoscope is operated along the centerline of an intraluminal organ which is easily violated during interventions. We introduce an adaptive strategy that generates multiple points in terms of sensor measurements and endoscope tip center ...

An endoscope deflection control is described whereby enhanced one-hand control of the tip of a polydirectionally deflectable endoscope is obtained. The deflection control is mounted external to the head of the endoscope in such manner that convenient single-hand manipulation of deflection control wheels mounted on the head provides tip deflection in either a freewheeling deflection mode or an incremental mode characterized by discrete stable incremental tip deflections. Single-hand operation of the endoscope deflection control is obtained by locating incremental deflection position elements in a compact structure which is wholly or partly external to the head while the control wheels remain within manipulatable reach of the single hands fingers. The deflection control wheels are under continuous control by the operator whose single hand may rotate either or both wheels in either mode and selectively, at any time, with the fingers of the same hand, may switch either or both control wheels into either of

Objective: Capsule endoscopy is a novel investigation for diagnosing small bowel diseases. However, its interpretation is highly subjective and the potential variability may compromise its accuracy and reliability. Here we studied the potential inter-observer variations on the interpretation of capsule endoscopy. Method: Two residents and one specialist in gastroenterology independently reviewed 58 capsule endoscopy studies in the same sequential order. The gastric transit time, small bowel transit time, and the most significant small bowel lesion were independently recorded. The consensus transit time was determined by the joint review of the three gastroenterologists. The gold standard for small bowel diagnoses was based on final surgical, endoscopic findings or consensus diagnosis. Results: Clinically significant and relevant small bowel lesions were found in 32 (55%) cases by consensus review. The overall mean accuracy in determining gastric emptying time, small bowel transit time and ...

An endoscopy is a procedure where a gastroenterologist (a doctor who specialises in the digestive system and liver) uses a special camera to inspect the gastrointestinal tract. An endoscopy may be a gastroscopy (which looks inside the beginning of the gastrointestinal tract), a colonoscopy (which looks inside the large bowel), or both. See our fact sheet Endoscopy - colonoscopy.. A gastroscopy looks at the oesophagus, the stomach and first part of the small bowel, also known as the duodenum. This is done by using a long flexible tube that has a light and a camera on the end, known as a gastroscope.. A capsule endoscopy is another way of looking at the gastrointestinal tract, in particular the small bowel (small intestine). This involves swallowing a capsule, which is the size of a large jellybean. The capsule contains a camera, which takes photos of the inside of the gastrointestinal tract over a period of 8-12 hours.. ...
The meta-analysis by Triester and colleagues shows that capsule endoscopy is clearly superior to push enteroscopy and small bowel barium radiography for identifying diagnostic abnormalities in patients with OGIB. This was also true for "clinically important findings," defined as lesions definitely or probably the source of bleeding, as determined by the authors of each included study. This is not surprising, as capsule endoscopy has a farther reach and thus will detect lesions farther in the small intestine than push enteroscopy, and small bowel radiography will not detect superficial lesions of the small intestine, the most common sources of OGIB. Little difference, however, existed between capsule endoscopy and push enteroscopy in detecting tumors, arguably the most important lesion causing OGIB. A diagnostic test is only as good as the management to which it leads. In the opinion of this reviewer, a definitive therapeutic procedure (e.g., surgery) is necessary for OGIB only if a tumor is ...
The Heidelberg test is like a window into the digestive system. It tells us about food absorption and digestion by obtaining an accurate measurement of the pH balance of the stomach. The Heidelberg pH Capsule is a high-frequency radio transmitter and pH sensor encapsulated within a special polyacrylate (plastic) covering. The capsule is about the size of a multi-vitamin and is designed to be swallowed. It measures and transmits the pH levels in the digestive system and the re-acidification time of the stomachs parietal cells. The Heidelberg Capsule system is one of the most valuable tools a doctor can have for safely and accurately determining disorders of digestion. Mal-absorption, stomach gas, belching, bloating, flatulence and irritable bowels can be addressed more thoroughly when the pH of the stomach is monitored. This test will accurately diagnose a patient who may have hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid), hyperchlorhydria (high stomach acid), achlorhydria (no stomach acid), pyloric ...
0077] Description has been made on the treatment instrument for endoscope which includes a puncture needle, a puncture needle and a tube body, or a puncture needle and a fitted body. The treatment instrument for endoscope is not limited to a single treatment instrument. Any treatment instrument for endoscope is possible if it can be inserted through the channel 23 and can project from a distal end portion 22 of an insertion portion 21. For example, a sheath having multiple lumens inside, and a sheath including multiple treatment instruments inserted in lumens can be given as examples of the treatment instrument for endoscope of the present embodiment. For example, a sheath which includes a treatment instrument having a cutting function, in addition to a puncture needle and a tube body, can be also preferably used as one treatment instrument for endoscope of the present embodiment as a whole. In the case of using a ring-shaped high-frequency snare, that is, a high-frequency snare having a ...
