Over the past several years, use of capillary tubing as a means for chemical injection has become increasingly common. Capillary tubing can provide a cost-effective way of introducing soap, corrosion inhibitors or other chemicals within or below the production tubing. These small strings have proven effective as treatment conduits for a wide variety of reasons without damaging or interfering with the production string. One common use of capillary tubing has been for soap injection. The small stainless-steel line is installed down to the lower section of the wellbore to a depth where liquid accumulation is suspected. Soap is then injected, either intermittently or continuously, down the line and mixed with the wellbore liquid. The migrating gas agitates the liquid / soap mixture and forms foam. The viscosity of the foam helps to resist gas-liquid separation, allowing the liquid to be recovered at velocities below what is considered a critical velocity.
Two foot length of tubing can be cut off to any length (usually 2). With one end cut at a 45° angle, can be inserted 1/8 into Pocket CA top and into #312 top if it is cut down an additional 3/64. For thin CA. Tubing only. Tip NOT include.
In cases associated with very difficult materials, for example glass, the tubing must be warmed prior to it being curved to particular specs. When the process is not done properly, the tubes may fall or crimp, rending the piece useless. There is a high level associated with ability involved with little size tube twisting, specifically for specific kinds of materials.

The goal of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR), a representative of counter-current substrate diffusion geometry, in mitigating nitrous oxide (N2O) emission. Two laboratory-scale reactors with the same dimensions but distinct biofilm geometries, i.e., a MABR and a conventional biofilm reactor (CBR) employing co-current substrate diffusion geometry, were operated to determine depth profiles of dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrous oxide (N2O), functional gene abundance and microbial community structure. Surficial nitrogen removal rate was slightly higher in the MABR (11.0 ± 0.80 g-N/(m2 day) than in the CBR (9.71 ± 0.94 g-N/(m2 day), while total organic carbon removal efficiencies were comparable (96.9 ± 1.0% for MABR and 98.0 ± 0.8% for CBR). In stark contrast, the dissolved N2O concentration in the MABR was two orders of magnitude lower (0.011 ± 0.001 mg N2O-N/L) than that in the CBR (1.38 ± 0.25 mg N2O-N/L), resulting in distinct N2O ...

This work addresses the development and assessment of a fiber optical viscometer using a simple and low-cost long-period fiber grating (LPFG) level sensor and a capillary tube mechanism. Previous studies of optical viscosity sensors were conducted by using different optical sensing methods. The proposed optical viscometer consists of an LPFG sensor, a temperature-controlled chamber, and a cone-shaped reservoir where gravitational force could cause fluid to flow through the capillary tube. We focused on the use of LPFGs as level sensors and the wavelength shifts were not used to quantify the viscosity values of asphalt binders. When the LPFG sensor was immersed in the constant volume (100 mL) AC-20 asphalt binder, a wavelength shift was observed and acquired using LabVIEW software and GPIB controller. The time spent between empty and 100 mL was calculated to determine the discharge time. We simultaneously measured the LPFG-induced discharge time and the transmission spectra both in hot air and AC-20
We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a compact micro-displacement sensor with high sensitivity based on a long-period fiber grating (LPG) with an air-cavity. The sensor head is obtained by composing an air-cavity with the ends of a LPG and a single mode fiber (SMF). The wavelength shift of the LPG has a linear relationship with the length of the air gap which agrees well with the theoretical analysis. The experimental results show that the sensitivity is ~0.22 nm/µm within the micro-displacement range of 0 to 140 µm.. ©2013 Optical Society of America. Full Article , PDF Article ...
A new method to control the free spectral range (FSR) of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is proposed and theoretically analyzed. As the refractive index
laser-irradiated fiber are presented. A Corning SMF-28 fiber was exposed from one side to focused pulses with durations of 100-500 ms. The cross-sectional form of the index modulation is asymmetric with changes concentrated on the side of the fiber facing the exposure. The longitudinal form is Gaussian-like with a wide top and extends approximately 100 μm from the center of the exposure. Relaxation of frozen-in viscoelasticity results in a maximum index modulation of ...
discrimination of different flow pattern changes within muscle. Three in vitro models were used: (i) bulk flow rate was varied within a single length of capillary tubing; (ii) at constant bulk flow, capillary volume was increased 3-fold by joining lengths of capillary in series, and compared to a single length; and (iii) at constant bulk flow, capillary volume was increased by sharing flow between a number of lengths of identical capillaries in parallel. The contrast medium for CEU was gas-filled albumin microbubbles. Pulsing interval (time) versus acoustic-intensity curves were constructed and from these, capillary volume and capillary filling rate were calculated. CEU estimates of capillary volume were not affected by changes in bulk flow. Furthermore, as CEU estimates of capillary volume increased, measures of capillary filling rate decreased, regardless of whether capillaries were connected in series or parallel. Therefore, CEU can detect a change in filling rate of the microvascular volume ...

AB - In the present work, a workflow on the development of a continuous protein crystallisation is introduced, with lysozyme as a model protein, from micro L screening experiments, to small scale batch crystallisation experiments in a shaking crystallisation platform, and to batch and continuous crystallisation experiments in an oscillatory flow platform. The lysozyme crystallisation investigated were for a concentration range from 30 to 100 mg/mL, shaking conditions from 100 to 200 rpm in the batch shaking crystallisation platform, and oscillatory conditions with amplitude (x) from 5 to 30 mm and frequency (f) from 0.1 to 1.0 Hz in the batch oscillatory flow crystallisation platform. We propose the use of the Reynolds number (Re) for scaling up of the process from the shaking batch to the continuous oscillatory flow platform. Additionally, it is shown that the nucleation rate increased with increase in concentration of initial lysozyme solution, or increase in shear rate, inducing smaller size ...

An intermediate higher refractive index overlay, deposited through Electrostatic Self-Assembly, is placed between the fiber cladding and the humidity sensitive film in order to increase the total effective refractive index of the coating. With this intermediate design, a three-fold improvement in the sensitivity was obtained. Wavelength shifts up to 15 nm against 5 nm were achieved in a humidity range from 20% to 80%.
The effect of biokinetics on nitritation was investigated in two biofilm geometries, the Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) and a conventional biofilm system. A 1D biofilm model was used and evaluated by global sensitivity analysis using the variance based Sobol method. The main focus was on the influence of key biokinetic parameters (maximum specific growth rates, oxygen and nitrogen affinity constants of AOB (ammonium oxidizing bacteria) and NOB (nitrite oxidizing bacteria)) and their ratios on nitritation efficiency in these geometries. This exhaustive simulation study revealed that nitritation strongly depends on the chosen kinetic parameters of AOB and NOB. The maximum specific growth rates (μmax,AOB and μmax,NOB) had the strongest impact on nitritation efficiency (NE). In comparison, the counter-diffusion geometry yielded more parameter combinations (27.5%) that resulted in high NE than the co-diffusion geometry (7.9%). The oxygen concentrations at the relevant biofilm interfaces ...
The paper conducts a research on a new type of long period fiber grating with a local micro-structured defect, we analyze and simulate its spectral characteristics by the coupled mode theory and transfer matrix method. Gaining this new type of long period fiber grating method is etching a long period fiber grating by the hydrofluoric acid (HF). This method will etch the local couple of long period fiber grating. The result shows that with the change of the etching depth, length and the position of the defect state, it will open a transmission window and break up into two transmission peaks in the spectra of the stop-band of long period fiber grating, the depth of the two transmission peaks have some relationship with the etching depth, length and the position of the defect state. When the corrosion depth is shallow, the depth of the left peak is higher than the right peak, with the increase of the corrosion depth, the depth of right peak gradually is increasing and over the left peak, the two ...
Protein crystallography uses X-ray diffraction techniques to determine the three-dimensional structures of proteins. Proteins are molecules with complex structure, and the diversity of the biological functions they express is determined by, and is dependent upon, the diversity of the tertiary structures they adopt, and upon the abilities of these structures to respond to other molecules by changes in shape and chemistry. At the present time, protein crystallography is the most widely applicable method of acquiring significant new structural data, and the detail it provides is unequalled by any other technique. Together with biochemical and chemical studies, the structural information acquired provides information upon which proposals concerning the molecular basis of biological activity can be based. The goal of the project described in this thesis is to optimize methods for crystallizing a copperhead phospholipase A2 enzyme both in its free state and complexed with an inhibitor. This thesis presents a
Automated, closed loop method and system for monitor and control of semiconductor fabrication processing are described. Optical emissions spectrometer (OES) data readings from a fabrication plasma chamber are statistically analyzed and a novel pattern model (based on Markov random fields) is used in combination with a selective stochastic relaxation technique to identify gaseous species within the chamber from the OES readings. Wavelength and intensity information is also employed to accurately estimate relative concentration levels of identified gases within the chamber. The unique statistical analysis approach described allows real-time monitor and control of physical processing within the fabrication chamber. Several practical algorithms are set forth, including techniques for OES peak identification, peak sharpening, gas identification, and physical processing control.
M. M. R. F, E. E. K and R. W. D.-The data presented in the attached Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show that the two viscometers yield values of about the same precision and reproducibility. To compare the results from the two different instruments, an average rate of shear must be assigned to the capillary type of viscometer. Values ranging from 0.5 to 0.66 of the maximum rate of shear at the capillary wall have been used as the average rate of shear. This basis appears adequate for the present comparisons given in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Considering all the variables involved, the differences in equipment and in techniques, and the number of experimental points covered in the two studies, the agreement between the two instruments is good; the maximum difference is about 6 percentage units in viscosity decrease. The agreement between the two instruments is poorest at +210 F with both oils. The best agreement for oil No. 104 is at 150 F and for oil No. 103 at 100 F. ...
Viscometers have an additional source of broadening beyond mixing (see band broadening correction for details). When a sample enters the second stage of the capillary bridge, it creates a differential pressure that shows up as the viscometer signal. The volume of one arm of the bridge is about 30 µL. Because the sample flow is split in the bridge, the detected elution volume is thus approximately 60 µL for a viscometer. Contrast this with the , 1 µL detection volume of a light scattering or concentration detector.. An initially sharp peak will therefore be broadened by approximately 60 µL for the viscometer alone, without even taking into account the broadening due to mixing. This makes the band broadening correction essential for determining intrinsic viscosity accurately, since intrinsic viscosity is calculated by taking the ratio of the viscometer and concentration peaks.. ASTRAs powerful band broadening correction accounts for the type of broadening present in viscometers, as well as ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Experimental evidence for reduced chain segment mobility in poly(amide)-6/clay nanocomposites. AU - Miltner, Hans E.. AU - Rahier, Hubert. AU - Pozsgay, András. AU - Pukánszky, B.. AU - Van Mele, Bruno. PY - 2005. Y1 - 2005. N2 - Poly(amide)-6/clay nanocomposites are investigated by means of modulated temperature differential scanning calorimetry. The importance of polymer-filler interaction is explored by comparing nanocomposites based on untreated and organically modified clay. During quasi-isothermal crystallization experiments, an excess contribution is observed in the recorded heat capacity signal due to reversible melting and crystallization. The magnitude of this excess contribution depends on the nanocomposite investigated. We suggest that it is directly related to the segmental mobility of the polymer chains in the interphase region. As such, the magnitude of this excess contribution can be used to quantify the efficiency of the polymer-clay interaction. Depending on ...
A method for interpreting transient electromagnetic survey data includes measuring transient response of a medium over a plurality of switching events. The measured transient response to a first one of the current switching events is modeled. Transient response to the model for at least one current switching event prior in time to the at least a first current switching event is calculated. The calculated transient response is summed with the first event measured response and the sum is compared to the electromagnetic survey measurements. The model is adjusted and the calculating summed transient responses is repeated until a difference between the summed calculated responses and the survey measurements falls below a selected threshold.

In the orginal instructions, she uses two sizes of tubing - one that goes directly on the dowel, othe other, a larger size that slips over the first tubing. It is the largest tubing that gets the genes. This allows you to demonstrate things such as crossing over, etc. I skipped the larger tubing, because my classes dont go into that kind of detail. As a result, I could have skipped the tubing altogether and just painted the stripes on the dowels, but I didnt consider that at the time ...

Significant caveats of the current MSI field are the need to process samples for MS analysis, increased turnaround time and limited utility of the technique to assess processed tissue specimens. To enrich the influence of MSI in the clinic, there is a desire for direct, real-time and rapid analysis of unprocessed samples. More recently, atmospheric pressure ambient ionisation MS has gained noteworthy interest for routine clinical use due to significant advantages over other MS techniques, including simpler sample preparation, simpler instrumentation, and analysis in real time in an open environment and at atmospheric pressure, which made the in vivo analysis of tissues using MSI a feasible and attractive option. Since these early experiments in the past decade, more than 40 ambient ionisation techniques have now been described in the literature.138 139 Please refer to recent reviews for a summary of common ambient and non-ambient ionisation methods for MSI.138 139 Rapid evaporative ionisation MS ...

An initial tranche of results from day-to-day use of a robotic system for setting up 100 nl-scale vapour-diffusion sitting-drop protein crystallizations has been surveyed. The database of over 50 unrelated samples represents a snapshot of projects currently at the stage of crystallization trials in Oxford research groups and as such encompasses a broad range of proteins. The results indicate that the nanolitre-scale methodology consistently identifies more crystallization conditions than traditional hand-pipetting-style methods; however, in a number of cases successful scale-up is then problematic. Crystals grown in the initial 100 nl-scale drops have in the majority of cases allowed useful characterization of X-ray diffraction, either in-house or at synchrotron beamlines. For a significant number of projects, full X-ray diffraction data sets have been collected to 3 Šresolution or better (either in-house or at the synchrotron) from crystals grown at the 100 nl scale. To date, five structures ...

Chemical probes of PTP activity are needed to gain a more complete understanding of their involvement in many physiological pathways and disease states. Two examples of inhibitory chemical probes for PTPs are Pmp, phosphonomethylphenylalanine, and F2Pmp, phosphono(difluoromethyl)phenylalanine. These mimics were synthesized by novel routes so that they were appropriately protected for solid phase peptide synthesis. Pmp was incorporated into two peptides for CD45 and HePTP inhibition studies. F2Pmp was incorporated into nine peptides for crystallization experiments. A very useful chemical probe of PTP activity, called pCAP, was synthesized, incorporated into peptides and used as a substrate to determine PTP subsite specificity in multiply phosphorylated peptide sequences. All three of the above mentioned probes are mimics of phosphotyrosine. Nitrosylating reagents are extremely useful inhibitory chemical probes that are not based on phosphotyrosine. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and a peptide-based ...
Here we introduce a new ambient ionization technique named laser assisted paper spray ionization mass spectrometry (LAPSI MS). In it, a 532 ± 10 nm, ≤10 mW laser pointer was shone on a triangularly cut paper along with high voltage, to effect ionization. The analyte solution was continuously pushed through a fused silica capillary, using a syringe pump, at a preferred infusion rate. LAPSI MS promises enhanced ionization with high signal intensity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are normally not ionizable with similar ionization methods involving solvent sprays. LAPSI MS works both in positive and negative modes of ionization. A clear enhancement of signal intensity was visualized in the total ion chronogram for most analytes in the presence of the laser. We speculate that the mechanism of ionization is field assisted photoionization. The field-induced distortion of the potential well can be large in paper spray as the fibers comprising the paper are separated at tens of ...
