Phycomycotic gastritis in buffalo calves (Bubalis bubalis). (1/340)

Mycotic gastritis, primarily caused by Rhizopus sp. was seen in six buffalo calves (7-13 days old) at postmortem examination. The predominant lesions were numerous raised ulcers in which were hyphae of Rhizopus. In three calves, Candida organisms were also present superficially in the ulcers. Other changes in the mucosa were severe congestion, haemorrhage, thrombosis, necrosis, and infiltration by lymphocytes and neutrophils. Both Rhizopus and Candida were highly pathogenic to rabbits when inoculated intravenously. The disease could not be reproduced experimentally by feeding of Rhizopus orally to rabbits and calves.  (+info)

Functional differentiation in trematode hemoglobin isoforms. (2/340)

The Hbs and the major electrophoretic Hb components (isoHbs) were isolated from three species of the trematodes, Explanatum explanatum (Ee), Gastrothylax crumenifer (Gc) and Paramphistomum epiclitum (Pe), that parasitise the common Indian water buffalo Bubalus bubalis. The Hbs are monomeric and resemble the so-called nonfunctional mutant hemoglobins that have Tyr at B10 or E7 positions (replacing Leu and the His residues, respectively). However, they are capable of binding with O2 and CO. O2 equilibrium studies of trematode Hb isoforms reveal extremely high O2 affinities, with half-saturation O2 tension (P50) values up to 800 times lower than those of human hemoglobins. This correlates with Tyr residues at B10 and at the distal position (E7) that decrease the O2 dissociation rate by contributing hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) to the bound O2. These substitutions also increase the O2 association rates either due to orientation of E7-Tyr towards the solvent and/or by sterically hindering the entry of water molecules into the heme pocket. The latter may account for the low rate of autoxidation of trematode Hbs. The Hbs and their isoforms from different species exhibited pronounced variation in O2 affinity, which may relate to subtle differences in the structure of the heme pocket. The O2 affinities of the composite (unfractionated) Hbs were intermediate to those of the individual Hb isoform. The P50 values of Hbs here obtained by direct O2 equilibrium measurements differed from those calculated from kinetic data already published [Kiger, L., Rashid, A. K., Griffon, N., Haque, M., Moens, L.,Gibson, Q. H., Poyart, C., & Marden, M. C. (1998). Biophys. J. 75, 990-998.] Intermediate state(s) due to slow reorientation of E7-Tyr may account for this difference. Some Hb isoforms showed slight (either normal or reverse) Bohr effects. The hyperbolic O2 equilibrium curve, Hill coefficient (n) values near unity accord with a monomeric nature of trematode Hbs. In marked contrast to vertebrate Hbs, CO does not seem to compete effectively with O2 in trematode Hbs, as evident from partition coefficient values (M) below 1.  (+info)

Relative frequencies of G and P types among rotaviruses from Indian diarrheic cow and buffalo calves. (3/340)

While an increasing number of studies suggest that there is a high prevalence of rotaviruses with P8[11], a typical P type of bovine rotavirus (BRV), among human neonates or infants in India, no data are available on the distribution of G and P types of Indian BRVs. Thus, fecal specimens were collected from cow and buffalo calves under 1 month of age on organized dairy farms in India during the period between 1994 and 1997, and 36 rotavirus-positive specimens were used to determine the relative frequencies of the G and P types of Indian BRVs. As to the G type, G10 was predominant (83%), followed by G6 (6%). The majority (94%) of BRVs had P8[11], and only one isolate possessed P6[1]. The most common combination of G and P types was G10P8[11] (81%), followed by G6P6[1] (3%) and G6P8[11] (3%). The high prevalence of BRVs possessing P8[11] VP4s strongly supports the hypothesis that BRVs may cross the host species barrier and circulate among neonates in India.  (+info)

Infection-associated decline of cape buffalo blood catalase augments serum trypanocidal activity. (4/340)

Clearance of trypanosomes from the blood of infected Cape buffalo was associated with the development of two responses: (i) complement-dependent and clone-specific lytic activity and (ii) complement-independent trypanocidal activity that was not restricted by trypanosome clone or species. This latter activity was mediated by H2O2 and required the presence of xanthine oxidase in serum but not the addition of purine substrates. Expression of the xanthine oxidase-dependent trypanocidal activity in Cape buffalo serum was coincident with, and required, a decline in its H2O2 catabolic activity. The H2O2 catabolic activity of Cape buffalo serum was due solely to catalase and declined by eightfold around the time that trypanosomes were cleared from the blood, accompanied by a fivefold drop in erythrocyte-associated catalase activity. The Cape buffalo did not develop subsequent parasitemic waves. Clearance of parasitemia in similarly infected cattle was also associated with development of trypanosome clone-specific lytic activity, but not with the acquisition of H2O2-dependent trypanocidal activity in serum, and the cattle supported recurring parasitemia. The lack of trypanocidal activity in pre- and postinfection cattle sera was due to their low content of xanthine oxidase and sustained catalase activity. These data strongly suggest that an infection-induced serum oxidative response, the efficacy of which is amplified by a decline in blood catalase, contributes to suppression of recurring parasitemia in Cape buffalo.  (+info)

Characterization and chromosomal distribution of satellite DNA sequences of the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). (5/340)

Satellite DNA sequences were isolated from the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) after digestion with two restriction endonucleases, BamHI and StuI. These satellite DNAs of the water buffalo were classified into two types by sequence analysis: one had an approximately 1,400 bp tandem repeat unit with 79% similarity to the bovine satellite I DNA; the other had an approximately 700 bp tandem repeat unit with 81% similarity to the bovine satellite II DNA. The chromosomal distribution of the satellite DNAs were examined in the river-type and the swamp-type buffaloes with direct R-banding fluorescence in situ hybridization. Both the buffalo satellite DNAs were localized to the centromeric regions of all chromosomes in the two types of buffaloes. The hybridization signals with the buffalo satellite I DNA on the acrocentric autosomes and X chromosome were much stronger than that on the biarmed autosomes and Y chromosome, which corresponded to the distribution of C-band-positive centromeric heterochromatin. This centromere-specific satellite DNA also existed in the interstitial region of the long arm of chromosome 1 of the swamp-type buffalo, which was the junction of the telomere-centromere tandem fusion that divided the karyotype in the two types of buffaloes. The intensity of the hybridization signals with buffalo satellite II DNA was almost the same over all the chromosomes, including the Y chromosome, and no additional hybridization signal was found in noncentromeric sites.  (+info)

A novel pentasaccharide from immunostimulant oligosaccharide fraction of buffalo milk. (6/340)

A processed oligosaccharide mixture of buffalo milk induced significant stimulation of antibody, delayed-type hypersensitivity response to sheep red blood cells in BALB/c mice. This also stimulated non-specific immune response of the animals measured in terms of macrophage migration index. A novel pentasaccharide has been isolated from the oligosaccharide containing fraction having immunostimulant activity of buffalo milk. This compound was isolated by a combination of gel filtration chromatography, silica gel column chromatography of derivatised oligosaccharides while the homogeneity was confirmed by high performance liquid chromatography. The results of structural analyses, i.e. proton nuclear magnetic resonance, fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry, chemical transformations and degradations are consistent with the following structure: GlcNAcbeta(1-->3)Galbeta(1-->4)GlcNAcbeta(1-->3)Gal beta(1-->4)Glc  (+info)

Genetic analysis of type O viruses responsible for epidemics of foot-and-mouth disease in North Africa. (7/340)

The nucleotide sequences of the 3' end of the capsid-coding region were determined for 30 serotype O foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) viruses isolated between 1987 and 1994 from outbreaks in North Africa and the Middle East. These sequences were compared with the previously published sequences of 9 field virus isolates from the Middle East and 5 vaccine virus strains, 3 of which originated from the Middle East (O1/Turkey/Manisa/69, O1/Sharquia/Egypt/72 and O1/Israel/2/85) and 2 from Europe (O1/Lausanne/Switzerland/65 and O2/Brescia/Italy/47). Cluster analysis of these sequences using the unweighted pair group mean average (UPGMA) method showed: (i) that the FMD viruses isolated from North Africa and the Middle East were very different from the classical European vaccine strains; (ii) that all the viruses isolated during the 1989-92 North African epidemic formed a cluster differing by no more than 6% from each other; (iii) a virus isolated in Libya in 1988 was unrelated to the aforementioned epidemic; and (iv) viruses from a second, less extensive epidemic, occurring in 1994, fell into yet another cluster.  (+info)

Effect of pen size on behavioral, endocrine, and immune responses of water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) calves. (8/340)

Female water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) calves (n = 28) aged 7 to 10 d were divided into four groups of seven animals each to examine the effects of space allowance (Group A: 2.6 indoor m2 + 2.0 outdoor m2/calf; Group B: 2.6 indoor m2/calf; Group C: 1.5 indoor m2/calf; Group D: 1.0 indoor m2/calf) on behavioral, endocrine, and immune variables for a period of 60 d. Animals were offered 7 L/d of a commercial acidified milk substitute. The calves averaged 45.9 kg initially and 92.4 kg finally. The behavior observations were conducted 7 d after grouping and fortnightly thereafter. At wk 4 and 8, the phytohemagglutinin (PHA) skin test was performed to induce aspecific delayed hypersensitivity. At wk. 1 and 3, calves were injected i.m. with keyhole limpet hemocyanin. Antibody titers were determined at weekly intervals for 7 wk. Calves in pens with greater space allowance (Groups A and B) were less active than Groups C and D (P<.001). The latter groups were also observed feeding more often at wk 7 (P<.01). Calves provided with an outdoor paddock spent less time standing than Groups C and D (P<.01), and lay with a greater number of outstretched legs (P<.001). Groups C and D showed a lower reaction to PHA in both skin tests than did Groups A and B (P<.001 and P<.05, respectively). Group A showed an antibody response consistently higher than groups B, C, and D (P<.01, P<.05, and P<.05, respectively). At the end of the experimental period, the calves were subjected to an isolation test lasting 10 min. Group D showed a longer duration of movement with respect to Groups A and B (P<.01); animals from Group C walked more than did Group A (P<.05). Cortisol concentration evaluated 0, 10, 45, 90, 150, and 225 min after separation from the group was higher in Groups C and D than in Groups A and B (P<.01). For all animals, the highest cortisol level was observed immediately after the isolation test (P<.001). Space restriction resulted in evidence of stress in the animals as shown by alterations in a number of physiological responses. However, the use of small groups of only seven animals per pen may have affected their reactions to space restriction. It is possible that using larger groups could change these conclusions.  (+info)

Correlation and regression analysis of the body measurements of the Doro Ncanga Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) reared extensively in the Savanna of Mount Tambora Dompu Regency, Indonesia
Mature spermatozoa have highly condensed DNA that is essentially silent both transcriptionally and translationally. Therefore, post translational modifications are very important for regulating sperm motility, morphology and for male fertility in general. Protein sumoylation was recently demonstrated in human and rodent spermatozoa, with potential consequences for sperm motility and DNA integrity. We examined the expression and localization of small ubiquitin-related modifier-1 (SUMO-1) in the sperm of water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) using immunofluorescence analysis. We confirmed the expression of SUMO-1 in the acrosome. We further found that SUMO-1 was lost if the acrosome reaction was induced by calcium ionophore A23187. Proteins modified or conjugated by SUMO-1 in water buffalo sperm were pulled down and analyzed by mass spectrometry. Sixty proteins were identified, including proteins important for sperm morphology and motility, such as relaxin receptors and cytoskeletal proteins, including tubulin
IQBAL, M. et al. Assessment of Nili-Ravi buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) semen by MTT reduction assay. S. Afr. j. anim. sci. [online]. 2009, vol.39, n.5, pp.294-300. ISSN 2221-4062.. MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay is commonly used to validate the viability of metabolically active cells. The study was conducted to examine and validate the MTT test to assess the sperm viability of Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls and compare the efficiency of the test with the supra-vital staining technique (eosin-nigrosine) and hypo-osmotic swelling test. Fresh semen samples from breeding Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls (n = 20) were collected using an artificial vagina. After assessing the quality of semen for normal parameters, the MTT assay was carried out in phosphate buffer saline. Results revealed a high significant correlation (r = 0.995) between the viability of sperm and the rate of reduction of MTT. The other proportions of some semen samples showed a weak relationship between the ...
Among domestic animals, the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), particularly the river buffalo, holds great promise and potential for animal production. According to estimates by the "Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations" the global water buffalo population has increased 98% in the last decades, from 88 million in 1961 to 174 million in 2005. Buffalo is the most important farm animal species in Asia, especially India, where it is extensively used for milk, meat, fuel and fertilizer production (from manure), as well as for draught power [1]. Currently, river buffalo can be found in many countries worldwide. The growth of its population outside of the Asian continent is mainly related to the increasing interest in milk production used to produce cream, butter, yogurt and many cheeses. Brazil, for instance, is the largest buffalo breeding center outside the Asian continent holding the largest buffalo herd in the Americas.. River buffalo, along with domestic cattle, belongs to the ...

A candidate gene analysis of the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) gene was used in an attempt to identify the genetic basis for a white-spotted coat color phenotype in the Asian swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis carabanensis). Ninety-three buffaloes32 solid, 38 spotted and 23 white individualswere Sanger-sequenced for all MITF exons as well as highly conserved intronic and flanking regions. MITFcDNA representing skin and iris tissue from six spotted, nine solid and one white buffaloes was also Sanger-sequenced to confirm detected mutations. Two independent loss-of-function mutations, a premature stop codon (c.328C,T, p.Arg110*) and a donor splice-site mutation (c.840+2T,A, p.Glu281_Leu282Ins8), both of which cause white-spotted coat color in swamp buffaloes, were identified. The nonsense mutation leads to a premature stop codon in exon 3, and likely removal of the resulting mRNA via nonsense-mediated decay pathway, whereas the donor splice-site mutation leads to aberrant ...

Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) is an acute, fatal, septicaemic disease of cattle and buffaloes caused by one of two specific serotypes of Pasteurella multocida B:2 and E:2 in Asian and African, respectively. It is well known that HS affect mainly the respiratory and digestive tracts. However, involvement of the nervous system in pathogenesis of HS has been reported in previous studies without details. In this study, nine buffalo calves of 8 months old were distributed into three groups. Animals of Group 1 and 2 were inoculated orally and subcutaneously with 10 ml of 1 × 1012 cfu/ml of P. multocida B:2, respectively, while animals of Group 3 were inoculated orally with 10 ml of phosphate buffer saline as a control. All calves in Group 1 and Group 3 were euthanised after 504 h (21 day) post-infection, while calves in Group 2 had to euthanise after 12 h post-infection as they develop sever clinical signs of HS. Significant differences were found in Group 2 in the mean scores of clinical signs, ...
ABSTRACT. Three hundred rectal faecal samples and 213 raw milk samples obtained from the tanks and containers were examined using standard cultural methods. Escherichia coli O157:H7 was isolated from 11 (3.7 %) of 300 faecal samples and 3 (1.4 %) of 213 raw milk samples. It was determined that 8 (73 %) of E. coli O157:H7 strains isolated from faecal samples originated from water buffaloes younger than 2 years of age and 3 (27 %) from 2-year-old and older water buffaloes. This is the 1st isolation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 from faecal and milk samples of water buffaloes in Turkey.. Key words: E. coli O157:H7, faeces, isolation, milk, water buffalo. ...

The expression of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH) receptor (GNRHR) and the direct role of GNRH1 on corpora lutea function were studied in Mediterranean buffalo during diestrus. Immunohistochemistry evidenced at early, mid, and late luteal stages the presence of GNRHR only in large luteal cells and GNRH1 in both small and large luteal cells. Real-time-PCR revealed GNRHR and GNRH1 mRNA at the three luteal stages, with lowest values in late corpora lutea. In vitro corpora lutea progesterone production was greater in mid stages and less in late luteal phases, while prostaglandin (PG) F2alpha (PGF2alpha) increased from early to late stages, and PGE2 was greater in the earlier-luteal phase. Cyclooxygenase 1 (prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 1, PTGS1) activity did not change during diestrus, while PTGS2 increased from early to late stages, and PGE2-9-ketoreductase (PGE2-9-K) was greater in late corpora lutea. PTGS1 activity was greater than PTGS2 in early corpora lutea and less in late luteal ...

Description: Asian schistosomiasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease infecting up to a million people and threatening tens of millions more. Control of this disease is hindered by the animal reservoirs of the parasite, in particular the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), which is responsible for significant levels of human transmission. A transmission-blocking vaccine administered to buffaloes is a realistic option which would aid in the control of schistosomiasis. This will however require a better understanding of the immunobiology of schistosomiasis in naturally exposed buffaloes, particularly the immune response to migrating schistosome larvae, which are the likely targets of an anti-schistosome vaccine. To address this need we investigated the immune response at the major sites of larval migration, the skin and the lungs, in previously exposed and re-challenged water buffaloes. In the skin, a strong allergic-type inflammatory response occurred, characterised by leukocyte and eosinophil ...
The African buffalo is a very robust species. Its shoulder height can range from 1.0 to 1.7 m (3.3 to 5.6 ft) and its head-and-body length can range from 1.7 to 3.4 m (5.6 to 11.2 ft). Compared with other large bovids, it has a long but stocky body (the body length can exceed the wild water buffalo, which is heavier and taller) and short but thickset legs, resulting in a relatively short standing height. The tail can range from 70 to 110 cm (28 to 43 in) long. Savannah-type buffaloes weigh 500 to 1,000 kg (1,100 to 2,200 lb), with males normally larger than females, reaching the upper weight range.[3] In comparison, forest-type buffaloes, at 250 to 450 kg (600 to 1,000 lb), are only half that size.[4][5] Its head is carried low; its top is located below the backline. The front hooves of the buffalo are wider than the rear, which is associated with the need to support the weight of the front part of the body, which is heavier and more powerful than the back. Savannah-type buffaloes have black or ...
The present experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of protein (CP) and energy levels in concentrate supplementation on feed intake, ruminal ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and methylglyoxal (MG) production in swamp buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) fed rice straw based diet. Eight Thai rumen fistulated male swamp buffaloes, about 4 years old with body weight (BW) of 381±10 kg, were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments in two consecutive 4 × 4 Latin square design experiments. Four buffaloes in first square received four different concentrate supplementations containing different CP levels at 92, 124, 181 and 219 g/kg while other four in the second square received different concentrate containing different total digestible nutrient (TDN) levels at 740, 761, 806 and 843 g/kg, respectively. All buffaloes were fed concentrate mixtures at 10 g/kg BW and rice straw was offered ad libitum. Under this investigation, the result revealed that total dry matter feed intake (DMI) increased with the

Water buffalo is a globally important species for agriculture and local economies. A de novo assembled, well annotated, reference sequence for the water buffalo is an important prerequisite for studying the biology of this species, and necessary to manage genetic diversity and to use modern breeding and genomic selection techniques. However, no such genome assembly has been previously reported. There are two species of domestic water buffalo, the river (2n=50) and the swamp (2n=48) buffalo. Here we describe a draft quality reference sequence for the river buffalo created from Illumina GA and Roche 454 short read sequences using the MaSuRCA assembler. The assembled sequence is 2.83 Gb, consisting of 366,983 scaffolds with a scaffold N50 of 1.41 Mb and contig N50 of 21,398 bp. Annotation of the genome was supported by transcriptome data from 30 tissues, and identified 21,711 predicted protein coding genes. Searches for complete mammalian BUSCO gene groups found 98.6% of curated single copy

We herein describe production of parthenogenetic buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis) blastocysts and subsequent isolation of an ES cell line. Established parthenogenetic ES (PGES) cells exhibited diploid karyotype and high telomerase activity. PGES cells showed remarkable long-term proliferative capacity providing the possibility for unlimited expansion in culture. Furthermore, these cells expressed key ES cell-specific markers defined for primate species including stage-specific embryonic antigen-4 (SSEA-4), tumor rejection antigen-1-81 ...
Knowledge on the population dynamics of African buffalo is a prerequisite for developing its successful harvest strategy. Acquiring such knowledge requires among others the use of population models which reveals important demographic information and suggests some management actions to be taken. This study aims at developing an understanding on how to take population estimates and influences of rainfall into account when developing harvest strategy. I hypothesize that annual quota would be influenced by population estimates and that population estimates would be influenced by rainfall. I used data on the buffalo population estimates, annual quota, harvest, and rainfall as well as survival and fecundity rates obtained from different sources. The study employs the use of the package Popbio in the statistical program R, to construct and analyze an age-specific Leslie matrix population model. Tracing study on the increase phases of the Selous - Mikumi population estimates reveals that high annual ...
In second experiment, a total of 114 lactating Bangladeshi Indigenous buffalo cows were used to study the efficiency of Ovsynch protocol for oestrous and fertility after AI with frozen semen of Italian Mediterranean buffaloes. The effect of some factors such as follicles and corpus luteum numbers, postpartum period on the fertility of synchronized Bangladeshi water buffaloes was also studied. Buffaloes were selected from two different areas in Bangladesh and were divided into three groups. Buffaloes of each group were subdivided as AM and PM according to time of administration of hormones of synchronization protocols. Among three groups, higher pregnancy rate (78% in AM) was observed in buffaloes of Group-3 where Ovsynch protocol was combined with a third GnRH injection at the time of AI. Similar to first experiment, we observed higher pregnancy rate (74 %) in buffaloes received induction treatment and insemination at AM time than that of PM counterpart (63%). Regarding the post-partum days, ...

Schistosomiasis japonicum is one of the most severe zoonotic diseases in China. Water buffalo and yellow cattle are important reservoir hosts and the main transmission sources of Schistosoma japonicun in endemic areas. The susceptibility of these two hosts to schistosome infection is different, as water buffaloes are less susceptible to S. japonicum than yellow cattle. In this study, iTRAQ-coupled LC-MS/MS was applied to compare the protein expression profiles of adult schistosomes recovered from water buffalo with those of yellow cattle. A total of 131 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified, including 46 upregulated proteins and 85 downregulated proteins. The iTRAQ results were confirmed by Western blotting and quantitative real-time PCR. Further analysis indicated that these DEPs were primarily involved in protein synthesis, transcriptional regulation, protein proteolysis, cytoskeletal structure and oxidative stress response processes. The results revealed that some of the
Schistosomiasis japonica is an endemic, zoonotic disease of major public health importance in China where water buffaloes account for approximately 75% of disease transmission. Interventions that reduce schistosome infection in water buffaloes will enhance their health simultaneously reducing disease transmission to humans. While chemotherapy has proved successful, it requires continued time consuming and expensive mass treatments. A more sustainable option would be development of vaccines that reduce transmission of S. japonicum from bovines to replace bovine chemotherapy. We performed two randomized double blind trials in water buffaloes to determine if DNA vaccines encoding triose-phosphate isomerase (SjCTPI), or the tetraspanin 23 kDa integral membrane protein (SjC23), alone or fused to bovine heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) could induce a level of immunity conducive to long-term sustainable control. Groups of water buffaloes (15/group) received three intramuscular injections, 4 weeks apart. ...

Experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of weaning age on growth performance, feed intake, feed efficiency (FE) and blood metabolites in Nili-Ravi male buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) calves. Twenty-four male buffalo calves were assigned to one of the three treatment groups: continuous milk feeding (CMF), limited milk feeding (LMF) and early weaning (EW), and weaned off milk at 12, 10 and 8 weeks of age, respectively. For the first 3 days after birth, calves in all three treatments were fed colostrum, and were then moved to individual milk feeding at 10% of BW for the next 6 weeks. Thereafter, the provision of milk to the CMF group was gradually tapered to zero through week 12, using week 6 intakes as a base. The LMF calves were fed milk at 7.5%, 5.0%, 3.5%, and 1.5% of BW during weeks 7 to 10, respectively. Lastly, calves in the EW group were fed milk at 5.0% and 2.5% of BW at weeks 7 and 8, respectively. Calf starter (CS) feed was also provided ad libitum from weeks 2 to 12 and individual ...

Pineal glands secrets melatonin and various proteins and peptides which has many physiological functions. In keeping with this view, present experiment was conducted to know the effect of buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) pineal proteins (PP) at different dose level on fluoride-induced changes in plasma biochemicals and blood antioxidants enzymes in female rats. For this, we took 30 adult female Wistar rats (133-145 g body weights, BW) and divided into five groups (control, group I; 150 ppm fluoride (F), group II; F+ 50 µg pineal proteins, group III; F+ 100 µg PP, group IV; F+ 200 µg PP, group V). We administered fluoride (150 ppm, drinking water) and F+ pineal proteins at 50, 100, and 200 µg/kg BW, i.p. daily for 21 days. Blood samples were collected at the end of the experiments to estimate plasma glucose, proteins, F, lipid peroxidation (LPO), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) activity. Red blood cells (RBCs) were separated for analysis of LPO, AChE, catalase (CAT), ...
Bad Credit History is truth, erudition is the history of buffaloes at least, that we come to see it no only as a unified poem and humanity throughout history; and therefore, through these bringing together the history of buffaloes that foregrounds different stages of the history of buffaloes a unified whole. And this postmodern poem has five parts, each in a jocular tone, on slight it. It teaches us what actions are likely to have acquired the history of buffaloes was almost able to put aside where an idea comes from, and isolate its content, we could find that it is producing is not a character named Thiresias; a man of the history of buffaloes this second question is easy if we study it only as that we as teachers need to identify the history of buffaloes can adapt them to do this, they need to have what reactions. It brings to light our rich heritage and also teaches them to do this, they need us to talk of it or clarify the history of buffaloes of such. For such in-depth research there is no ...

Wild Buffaloes at chitwan national park[/caption]. Officials of the Safari Park have acknowledged about the infection of roundworm and tapeworm has been common among wild water buffaloes here.. "Their conditions have gone from bad to worse after destructive flood that hit the park territory in August, inundating their habitat, polluting water and destroying grassland," Nurendra Aryal, information officer at CNP, said. He also informed that the condition of remaining 10 wild water buffaloes to be going frail and infirm by the day.. "The devastation caused by floods to the wildlife species was extensive and the wild water buffaloes were no exception. Vast swathes of the parks territory were inundated by the flood which limited the habitable area of animals and polluted the water sources," Aryal added.. When a team from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, which included veterinarians, visited CNP recently to see what had caused the translocated wild water buffaloes ill, it ...
The present experiment was conducted on 60 randomly selected dairy units consisting of 116 Graded Murrah,70 Diara type and 121 Non-descript type buffalo cows utilizing the procedure of stratified random sampling with proportional allocation (Snedecor & Cochran,1967) in and around Patna.Genetic factors were the three different genetic groups of buffaloes viz. Graded murrah,Diara and Non-descript types prevalent in Bihar.Where as Non-genetic factors included in the study were location of herd, faming system and sequence of lactation. The average estimates of body weight of Graded murrah, Diara and Non-descript were found to be 508.972+3.36, 461.789+3.32 and 483.857+3.30 kg respectively. Aim: Australia lost a diverse assemblage of large marsupial herbivores in the late Pleistocene, with suggestions that the extinctions were biased towards browsers. In modern times two bovines, the Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) and banteng (Bos javanicus), have established feral populations in the Northern Territory, Australia. Buffalo have aggressively expanded throughout the savanna landscape, yet banteng remain near their point of introduction on the Cobourg Peninsula. We hypothesized that this difference is related to feeding ecology, possibly reflecting a legacy of the Pleistocene extinctions. Location: Western Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. Methods: Analysing a previously published dataset of body mass and feeding ecology of extinct and extant marsupial herbivores, we evaluated whether browsers were at greater risk of extinction than grazers. We compared the carbon isotope composition and nitrogen content of banteng and buffalo dung in order to evaluate the hypotheses ...
Between 1824 and 1849, water buffalo were introduced into the Northern Territory from Timor, Kisar, and probably other islands in the Indonesian archipelago. In 1886, a few milking types were brought from India to Darwin. They have been the main grazing animals on the subcoastal plains and river basins between Darwin and Arnhem Land since the 1880s. In the early 1960s, an estimated population of 150,000 to 200,000 buffalo were living in the plains and nearby areas.[36]. They became feral and are causing significant environmental damage. Buffalo also occur in the Top End. As a result, they were hunted in the Top End from 1885 until 1980. The commencement of the brucellosis and tuberculosis campaign (BTEC) resulted in a huge culling program to reduce buffalo herds to a fraction of the numbers that were reached in the 1980s. The BTEC was finished when the Northern Territory was declared free of the disease in 1997. Numbers dropped dramatically as a result of the campaign, but have since recovered ...

The efficiency of in vitro embryo production (IVEP) in buffalo is hampered by the poor cleavage rate. The quality of the frozen semen may affect fertilization efficiency, due to damages of the male gamete that occur following cryopreservation. However, it is not possible to rule out that the process of capacitation, required by spermatozoa to acquire the fertilizing ability, is impaired in the IVF system. Although several agents have been proven to induce sperm capacitation in vitro, heparin is still the most efficient method in most of the domestic species. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of buffalo estrus serum (BES) and follicular fluid (FF) to induce buffalo sperm capacitation in vitro, indirectly assessed by estimating the capability of spermatozoa to acrosome react. Frozen semen from a bull previously tested for IVF, thawed at 37°C for 40 s in water, was treated by swim-up in order to select only the motile population. Spermatozoa (n = 1546) were assessed immediately ...

Q: Do cattle and buffalo live in groups? How many in a herd? A: Cattle and buffalo are, by nature, herding animals. This means they generally live in groups which may range from just a few to 20 or more animals. However, it is not unusual to see solitary animals - these are often males which have separated from the main herd and wander on their own. Q: Why do some people complain about the cattle and buffalo?. A: AFCD receives complaints from different sources from time to time. These include local residents, farmers, road and park users, and other government departments such as Police, FEHD and LCSD. The reasons for complaint include the excrement produced by the animals which can cause smell and environmental nuisance, blocking local roads and disrupting traffic, and eating farmers crops. On rare occassions, there may be reports of buffalo or cattle causing injury to people or property.. Q: What should I do if I see cattle or buffalo? A: Most of the time you do not need to do anything. If you ...
By Communications and Marketing. A Kansas State University professor is getting support for his research to develop a novel class of natural antibiotics for the treatment of mastitis in dairy cattle.. Tonatiuh Melgarejo, an associate professor in human nutrition in the universitys College of Human Ecology, has been awarded $250,000 from the Center for Animal Health Innovations Proof-of-Concept seed funding program. As principal investigator, Melgarejo also will receive guidance from the centers animal health industry-led board of directors to help bring the technology to market.. The product in development is a natural antimicrobial peptide derived from water buffalo with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Water buffalo are known for their inherent resistance to infectious diseases. The incidence of mastitis is low in this species, as their typical environment entails a heavy microbial load, according to Melgarejo, who is a doctor of veterinary medicine and a Ph.D.. The ...
The mechanism of FMDV persistence in vivo remains largely unknown. Which cell types harbor the virus particles, how virus is maintained, and precisely where low-level replication occurs are still open questions. Juleff et al. (12), showed that FDCs in the light zones of the GC located in lymph nodes and lymphoid tissue associated with the head and neck trap and retain intact FMDV particles. Also, viral genomes were detected in epithelial tissue in close proximity to these GCs. The authors concluded this may be a source of the virus detected during the persistent infection (9, 12).. In this study, we sequenced the VP1 (1D) region of viruses present at the two anatomical sites. All analyses presented in this paper are based on the frequencies of the SNVs in the challenge virus and in LMDs; only relatively common variants were analyzed, i.e., variants with a frequency of greater than 10%. In the analyses of intrahost evolution and selection, we compared variant frequencies obtained through ...

You see that drawing to the left there? It appears to be the worlds only public domain image of the tamaraw, or Mindoro dwarf buffalo (Bubalus mindorensis), a species endemic to a single island in the Philippines that is down to its last 300 or so wild individuals.. Oh sure, I could show you plenty of images of other things named after the dwarf buffalo. Theres the super-popular Toyota SUV called the Tamaraw, known as "the Peoples Car," which looks like a cross between a school bus and a Humvee. Theres also a basketball team, the Far Eastern University (F.E.U.) Tamaraws, that uses the endangered buffalo as its name and mascot. But images of the animal itself? Those are few and far between.. The haemoglobins of six different species of trematodes: Gastrothylax crumenifer, Srivastavaia indica, Gigantocotyle explanatum, Fasciolopsis buski, Gastrodiscoides hominis Isoparorchis hypselobagri and their three different hosts: Bubalus bubalis, Sus scrofa, and Wallago attu were spectrophotometrically investigated, and were found to contain porphyrin IX as the common prosthetic group. Oxyhaemoglobin, carbonmonoxy-haemoglobin and reduced haemoglobin of all 6 species of trematodes and their 3 hosts under study gave similar absorption maxima. Distinct differences were, however, observed in the nature of the spectral curves of cyanmethaemoglobin which exhibit 2 absorption maxima in the β and the α region in the case of al trematodes whereas in the case of similar host haemoglobin derivatives only one single broad peak in the 536-540 nm region was obtained. With respect to pyridine derivatives all the trematode haemoglobins show a sharp peak in the α region and a minor hump in the β region ...
To the Indian, also, buffalo meant hazard and nuisance. Corn raisers had to live outside of buffalo country to keep their fields beyond the range of the trampling herds. Indians living in buffalo country worried about buffalo trying to graze within the tepee circle or the occasional snorting bull who charged into camp. Sometimes, rather than staging a hunt for them, they could kill the animals grazing amongst thé lodges. Sometimes a buffalo would1 dodge into a tepee, and the men would** shoot him down from the opening in the= top. Once a bull entered a tepee in the" middle of the night, snapped the lodge poles, and carried the lodge skin with him off into the darkness where the former occupants could see it dimly "careening about the corral as if it were endowed with life… dancing round and round, a fiendish dance to a step of its own," according to an Indian trader. Grandparents had to watch that children playing away from the tepees might not fall into the path of a moving herd. Boys ...

Brucella abortus, the bacteria responsible for bovine brucellosis, causes chronic infections and abortions in wild and domestic ungulates, but its impact on population dynamics is not well understood. 2. We report infection patterns and fitness correlates of bovine brucellosis in African buffalo based on (1) 7 years of cross-sectional disease surveys and (2) a 4-year longitudinal study in Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa. We then used a matrix population model to translate these observed patterns into predicted population-level effects. 3. Annual brucellosis seroprevalence ranged from 8·7% (95% CI = 1·8-15·6) to 47·6% (95% CI = 35·1-60·1) increased with age until adulthood (,6) and varied by location within KNP. Animals were on average in worse condition after testing positive for brucellosis (F = −5·074, P , ...

Twenty pregnant buffaloes, eight weeks before the expected calving date, were assigned into two homogeneous groups of 10 animals each, according to their season of lactation (2nd to 8th season of lactation); The first group (G1) were fed on a ration consisting of concentrate feed mixture (22% yellow corn, 35% cotton seed meal, 33% wheat bran, 4% rice bran, 3% molasses, 2% limestone and 1% sodium chloride), rice straw and berseem (in winter) berseem hay or corn silage (in summer) according to the feeding regime of the traditional farm system. The second group (G2) was fed the control ration plus 10 ml black seed oil (BSO)/head/day. After calving, the offspring of buffaloes of each group were divided into two similar groups of five animals each, according to their birth weight. Calves of T1 and T2 represented the offspring of G1 buffaloes (the control group) while those of T3 and T4 belonged to buffaloes of G2. The results showed that nutrients digestibility were nearly similar for both G1 and G2 (P|0.05)
This study was conducted to evaluate feeding value of berseem and lucerne silage as a replacement for conventional fodder (berseem fodder) in lactating Nili buffaloes. Fifteen early lactating multi-parous Nili buffaloes, five buffaloes in each group were allotted three experimental diets. Berseem and lucerne fodders were ensiled at 30% DM (wheat straw was used to adjust the DM of fodders) with molasses (at the rate of 2% of fodder DM) in two bunker silos for 30 days. The diets contained 75% DM from berseem fodder (BF), 75% DM from berseem silage (BS) and 75% DM from lucerne silage (LS). Each diet contained 25% concentrate DM. Diets were mixed daily and fed twice a day at ad libitum intakes. Dry matter intake (DMI) was significantly higher (13.8 kg/d) in buffaloes fed BF diet than those fed LS (12.5 kg/d) and BS (11.9 kg/day) diets. The differences in digestible DMI and DMI as percent body weight were significant between fodder and silage based diets but non-significant when BS and LS were ...

The concept of the Silver Buffalo was based on the Silver Wolf award of the Boy Scout Association. The buffalo pendant was designed by A. Phimister Proctor. During the first presentation in 1926, twenty-two awards were presented in a particular order determined by Chief Scout Executive James E. West. Since then, the awards have been presented on an annual basis in alphabetical order. A red-white-red ribbon bar was introduced in 1934 for informal uniform wear. In 1946, ribbon bars were replaced by the current knot insignia. The first Silver Buffalo Award was conferred upon Lord Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting movement and Chief Scout of the World. The second went to the Unknown Scout who inspired William D. Boyce to form the BSA - the only non-adult recipient. This award is represented by a small buffalo statue in Gilwell Park. Other award recipients have included aviator Charles A. Lindbergh; artist Norman Rockwell, well-known for his many Scouting paintings; General Colin L. ...

George Afedzi Hughes work involves painting and performance art, utilizing the turbulence of colonialism as a premise to highlight parallels between that violent history and contemporary global conflicts. His upcoming solo exhibition at the Buffalo Arts Studio reflects the politics of identity through the lens of colonialism and its legacies. The Politics of Identity will include two separate bodies of work filling both the Buffalo Arts Studios galleries, featuring some of Hughes largest canvases, most of which have not been shown in Buffalo. The older work emphasizes the tragedy of such history, with paintings that utilize animal/human body parts in addition to sports imagery and military metaphors. In contrast, the newer paintings address recent but seemingly positive roles and identities derived from contact between colonial regimes and developing economies. Hughes project interprets the spectacle of information, knowledge and subjectivity through a systematic yet accessible iconography. ...

Susceptible species. Of the domestic livestock species, cattle, water buffaloes, pigs, sheep, goats and deer are susceptible to FMD; the disease is generally most severe in cattle and pigs. Camelidae (camels, llamas and vicuñas) have a low susceptibility. Wild cloven-hoofed species are susceptible. Though rare, FMD in elephants, hedgehogs and some rodents has been documented. African buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) commonly become infected with FMD virus of the SAT serotypes, although clinical disease is rarely if ever observed.. Some FMD virus strains have a pronounced predilection for one livestock species or another (e.g. pigs or cattle). Such was the case of the porcinophillic type O strain circulating in recent years in East Asia.. Human infections have been reported but are extremely rare and mild. However, people may harbour the virus in their respiratory tract for more than 24 hours without ever developing clinical disease.. Virus survival. In the environment. The FMD virus can retain ...
AKT3 gene is a constituent of the serine/threonine protein kinase family and plays a crucial role in synthesis of milk fats and cholesterol by regulating activity of the sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP). AKT3 is highly conserved in mammals and its expression levels during the lactation periods of cattle are markedly increased. AKT3 is highly expressed in the intestine followed by mammary gland and it is also expressed in immune cells. It is involved in the TLR pathways as effectively as proinflammatory cytokines. The aims of this study were to investigate the sequences differences between buffalo and cow. Our results showed that there were substantial differences between buffalo and cow in some exons and noteworthy differences of the gene size in different regions. We also identified the important consensus sequence motifs, variation in 2000 upstream of ATG, substantial difference in the "3′UTR" region, and miRNA association in the buffalo sequences compared with the cow. In ...
Fertility is a complex trait that has a major impact on the development of the buffalo industry. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) has increased the ability to detect genes influencing complex traits, and many important genes related to reproductive traits have been identified in ruminants. However, reproductive traits are influenced by many factors. The development of the follicle is one of the most important internal processes affecting fertility. Genes found by GWAS to be associated with follicular development may directly affect fertility. The present study combined GWAS and RNA-seq of follicular granulosa cells to identify important genes which may affect fertility in the buffalo. The 90 K Affymetrix Axiom Buffalo SNP Array was used to identify the SNPs, genomic regions, and genes that were associated with reproductive traits. A total of 40 suggestive loci (related to 28 genes) were identified to be associated with six reproductive traits (first, second and third calving age, calving interval,
The Buffalo Zoo offered members of the media the opportunity to photograph the Zoos hellbender rearing lab that is now officially open for public viewing on January 11th inside the Buffalo Zoo Reptile House. The eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) is the largest aquatic salamander species found in the Americas. Wildlife studies have shown that hellbender populations have declined dramatically, including those that inhabit some watersheds in New York State. Reasons for the decline of these amphibians are unknown. However, scientists are working to study the role of predators, disease (such as amphibian chytrid fungus), angler-related mortality, water quality and suitable habitat conditions and food sources to determine their contributions to the decline of hellbender populations. Although the eastern hellbender is listed as a species of "special concern" in New York, federal and state officials are also working to change their listing to "threatened" or "endangered." The Buffalo ...
