The occurrence of amphibians in bromeliads from a southeastern Brazilian restinga habitat, with special reference to Aparasphenodon brunoi (Anura, Hylidae). (1/20)

Five species of anuran amphibians, all belonging to the family Hylidae, were collected at Praia das Neves, municipality of President Kennedy, southeastern Brazil. The species were represented by four genera: Scinax, Hyla, Aparasphenodon, and Trachycephalus. Four species (A. brunoi, Hyla albomarginata, Scinax altera, and S. cuspidatus) were found during the dry season (August 1999), and two (A. brunoi and Trachycephalus nigromaculatus) in the rainy season (February 2000). Aparasphenodon brunoi was the most abundant species in Praia das Neves. Some reproductive aspects and feeding habits of this hylid were investigated. Aparasphenodon brunoi was found mainly inside the bromeliad Aechmea lingulata, the largest plant analyzed. Fifteen specimens were collected during the dry season (August 1999) (11 males and 4 females). During the rainy season (February 2000), we collected 14 specimens (3 males, 10 females, and 1 juvenile). Sex-ratio was 1:1. Frogs ranged in snout-vent length from 31.2 to 69.3 mm. Females were larger than males. One female had 1,451 fully developed oocytes in her ovaries. The major groups of prey found in the stomachs were: Insecta, Myriapoda, and Arachnida. Blattodea, Orthoptera, Lepidoptera, and Hymenoptera (only ants) were the main food types in frequency, number, and weight. Aparasphenodon brunoi is a threatened species in many habitats of southeastern Brazil. Only natural vegetation protection may guarantee its survival during the immediate future.  (+info)

Aechmea pectinata: a hummingbird-dependent bromeliad with inconspicuous flowers from the rainforest in south-eastern Brazil. (2/20)

The pollination biology of Aechmea pectinata (Bromeliaceae) was studied in a submontane rainforest in south-eastern Brazil. This species has a mainly clumped distribution and its aggregated individuals are likely to be clones. From October to January, during the flowering period, the distal third of its leaves becomes red. The inflorescence produces 1-15 flowers per day over a period of 20-25 d. The flowers are inconspicuous, greenish-white coloured, tubular shaped with a narrow opening, and the stigma is situated just above the anthers. Anthesis begins at 0400 h and flowers last for about 13 h. The highest nectar volume and sugar concentration occur between 0600 and 1000 h, and decrease throughout the day. Aechmea pectinata is self-incompatible and therefore pollinator-dependent. Hummingbirds are its main pollinators (about 90 % of the visits), visiting flowers mainly in the morning. There is a positive correlation between the number of hummingbird visits per inflorescence and the production of nectar, suggesting that the availability of this resource is important in attracting and maintaining visitors. The arrangement of the floral structures favours pollen deposition on the bill of the hummingbirds. Flowers in clumps promote hummingbird territoriality, and a consequence is self-pollination in a broader sense (geitonogamy) as individuals in assemblages are genetically close. However, trap-lining and intruding hummingbirds promote cross-pollination. These observations suggest that successful fruit set of A. pectinata depends on both the spatial distribution of its individuals and the interactions among hummingbirds.  (+info)

Preliminary evidence of association between species of mosquitoes in Atlantic forest of Santa Catarina State, (Diptera: Culicidae). (3/20)

A positive coefficient of association (affinity) between Runchomyia reversa and Anopheles cruzii and high (0.38) index were observed, probably due to the similar breeding places (bromeliads) and to landing habits. Furthermore, a high (0.92) index of association between Oc. scapularis and Wyeomyia incaudata, with low coefficient of association was observed.  (+info)

Relationship between invertebrate fauna and bromeliad size. (4/20)

Several bromeliads species store water and organic substrates, allowing the establishment of phytotelmata and associated fauna on their leaves. In this study, we sampled 70 individuals of Vriesea sp. (Carriere) (Bromeliaceae), in rupestrian fields in the Serra de Ouro Branco-MG, Brazil. The relationships between invertebrate species richness and abundance and size of bromeliads were tested using multiple regression. We found 19 species associated with bromeliads, mainly Diptera larvae. The abundance of the phytotelmate fauna increased principally in relation to the volume of water in the bromeliad reservoir. Phytotelmata richness was affected principally by diameter of the reservoir. There was a significant relationship between the abundance and richness of invertebrates associated with leaves with diameter and height of the plant. Invertebrate richness was better explained by abundance of individuals. These results suggest that the increase of richness was attended by higher numbers of microhabitats and more space for colonization of bigger bromeliads. Additionally, there was more chance of sampling different species in locales with greater abundance of individuals.  (+info)

Plants that grow epiphytically are often adapted to hold water in a central cup or in leaf axils to maintain hydration given that they cannot access soil water. These bodies of water, called phytotelmata, are miniature temporary aquatic ecosystems. This water frequently contains a variety of microorganisms. The New Zealand native Collospermum hastatum (Colenso) Skottsb. (Asteliaceae) is known to hold water within the leaf axils; however, an assessment of algal communities within this habitat has never been undertaken. To remedy this lack of knowledge, water samples were obtained from the leaf axils of C. hastatum, with exotic bromeliads for comparison. Freycinetia banksii A.Cunn. and Astelia solandri A.Cunn. were also investigated, but did not contain sufficient water for further investigation. Urban bromeliads investigated had a wide range of organisms within the phytotelmata, including four genera of diatoms. No desmids were identified. Collospermum and Forest-sourced bromeliad water held a ...

INTRODUCTION Phytotelmata are aquatic micro-environments formed by accumulation of water in any part of the body of plants such as leaves, flowers, stems or trunks (Frank & Lounibos, 1983). The communities of organisms that live in them are composed mainly of insects, immature stages of Diptera being dominant (Fish, 1983). The fact that phytotelmata are easy to handle small pools of water which allow to design experiments in natural conditions could account for the various studies carried out on them. Furthermore, some phytotelmata are important habitats that produce mosquito vectors of human diseases (Frank et al., 1988; OMeara et al., 1995). The phytotelmata of Argentina have not been explored in depth, and only a few studies related to the invertebrate community living therein have been published. The first one was conducted in the subtropical region of Corrientes province, regarding the Bromeliaceae Aechmea distichantha Lemaire (Torales et al., 1972); it described the physical and chemical ...

Do you want the good news or the bad news? We now have 8821 names on the International Bromeliad Cultivar Register of which 4366 are Neoregelia. If you wanted to buy one of these plants how lucky would you be? Many of the older ones would be very difficult to find. With many of the newer ones you could try contacting the hybridist but even then you could have problems. Let me explain.. In the good-old-days, Nurseries printed Catalogues and advertised their wares in various Newsletters and Journals. However, as Herb Plever from New York already pointed out these Catalogues are becoming few and far between and yet plants, especially hybrids, are still sold and purchased around the world.. Ever since I became Registrar in 2000 I have tried to point out the advantages of registering hybrids if only to give some way of identification compared to the names that just occur in Catalogues, which for want of a term I have always called Nurserymen s Names or NN for short. If mentioned in a Bromeliad ...

Pups should be separated when theyre fairly large (maybe, say, when theyre 75-80% the height of the parent), ideally when theyve produced some roots of their own, with a clean knife (or you can just pull them apart, sometimes). Although some bromeliads will continue to offset for a long time, if you take off the pups (My oldest Aechmea fasciata has produced five offsets after two years post-flower, and I have a couple Guzmania lingulatas that have each produced six. In all three cases, the parent plants still seem healthy and functional and are not necessarily finished yet.), I have never tried re-potting a parent Vriesea splendens, so Im not sure if this would work to produce more pups, but I sure as hell intend to try when my large one starts to offset ...

The bust consists of two pieces: the bust itself and the ponytail. My only criticism of this piece is the fact that there is no means provided to display the bust. While this is clearly indicated in the description of the piece: This bust does not include a base or a stand, it is decidedly a bump- in-the-road for the miniaturist who wants to get straight to painting. Personally, its neither here nor there for me, especially as I tend to rework/replace the pedestal portion of all my busts. But to a relatively inexperienced miniaturist, this could be a deal-breaker after the fact. Jessica is now in the oven with her newly added pedestal: hopefully it will be a done-deal before the lunch break. . . ...

The brain picks up that you are under stress, for example. It then commands the kidneys to release cortisol to increase awareness and ready you for the fight-or-flight response. But there is a twist. Modern research, of which Antonio Damasio also writes in his book Descartes Error, has revealed that the very hormones that the brain releases, influences the brain that changes your behaviour. Testosterone increases risk-taking behaviour and, together with cortisol is one of the most powerful drugs known to the human brain.. How does this explain booms and busts? According to a US psychiatrist, an increasing number of traders are being prescribed anti-depressants. The anti-depressants effectively numbs the traders to the effects of too much risk; to know when to fight of flee, causing them to take ever larger risks. Consequently, the Dot Com Bubble grew larger than it should have, and its aftermath more widespread than could have been predicted. We can only assume that the next bubble will be even ...
There was a healthy colony of a Callicostella sp. There are apparently about 100 species of Callicostella, a tropical genus found mainly in Africa and Central and South America, with one species known from Australia. Growing on bromeliads, its tempting to speculate it might a be a new world species, but it would seem an impossible task to determine which plant or from which source the original imported material came in on and it seems the chances of naming the species are small. Next, I tackled the front which was not at all straightforward. I started with a 10 on top (shoulders and armholes) and then I did a Full Bust Adjustment. I used the technique in Pattern Fitting With Confidence by Nancy Zeiman which is unlike anything Ive seen on the web, but I figured Id give it a try. Essentially, she has you increase the bust dart according to cup size and increase the length of the front to account for the change in dart size. So, I traced a size 10 and cut it out, then followed the FBA instructions from the book, and cut that pattern piece out. That was all relatively easy. Then, I ran into something of a wall. Briefly, moving the side seam out by three inches at the waist gave me something that looked like the bust and the waist couldnt connect without creating some funky shape. I decreased the amount I added to the waist by half because I thought that if I didnt sew down the center box pleat past the bust, I would end up having extra room from that. Eventually, I was ...

Bromeliads are plants that are adapted to various climates. Foliage takes different shapes, from needle-thin to broad and flat, symmetrical to irregular, spiky to soft. The foliage, which usually grows in a rosette, is widely patterned and coloured. Leaf colours range from maroon, through shades of green, to gold. Varieties may have leaves with red, yellow, white and cream variations. Others may be spotted with purple, red, or cream, while others have different colors on the tops and botecies Tillandsia cyanea have a fragrance resembling that of clove spice. One study found 175,000 bromeliads per hectare (2.5 acres) in one forest; that many bromeliads can sequester 50,000 liters (more than 13,000 gallons) of water.[6] A wide variety of organisms takes advantage of the pools of water trapped by bromeliads. A study of 209 plants from the Ecuadorian lowlands identified 11,219 animals, representing more than 300 distinct species, many of which are found only on bromeliads. Examples include some ...
