Overexpression of Ogg1 in mammalian cells: effects on induced and spontaneous oxidative DNA damage and mutagenesis. (1/58)

Chinese hamster ovary cell lines (AA8 and AS52) were stably transfected to overexpress hOgg1 protein, the human DNA repair glycosylase for 7,8-dihydro-8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG). In the transfectants, the repair rate of 8-oxoG residues induced by either potassium bromate or the photosensitizer [R]-1-[(10-chloro-4-oxo-3-phenyl-4H-benzo[a]quinolizin-1-yl)-carbo nyl ]-2-pyrrolidinemethanolplus light was up to 3-fold more rapid than in the parental cells. However, the improved repair had little effect on the mutagenicity of potassium bromate in the guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (gpt) locus of the OGG1-transfected AS52 cells. The steady-state (background) levels of DNA base modifications sensitive to Fpg protein, which include 8-oxoG, in cells not exposed to a damaging agent were not reduced by the overexpression of Ogg1 protein. Moreover, the spontaneous mutation rates in the gpt locus were similar in OGG1-transformed and vector-only-transformed cells. The results demonstrate the potential of Ogg1 protein to remove its substrate modifications from most of the chromosomal DNA. They indicate, on the other hand, that the Ogg1 protein alone may not be rate limiting for the repair of the residual substrate modifications observed in cells under normal growth conditions.  (+info)

Balancing the risks and benefits of drinking water disinfection: disability adjusted life-years on the scale. (2/58)

To evaluate the applicability of disability adjusted life-years (DALYs) as a measure to compare positive and negative health effects of drinking water disinfection, we conducted a case study involving a hypothetical drinking water supply from surface water. This drinking water supply is typical in The Netherlands. We compared the reduction of the risk of infection with Cryptosporidium parvum by ozonation of water to the concomitant increase in risk of renal cell cancer arising from the production of bromate. We applied clinical, epidemiologic, and toxicologic data on morbidity and mortality to calculate the net health benefit in DALYs. We estimated the median risk of infection with C. parvum as 10(-3)/person-year. Ozonation reduces the median risk in the baseline approximately 7-fold, but bromate is produced in a concentration above current guideline levels. However, the health benefits of preventing gastroenteritis in the general population and premature death in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome outweigh health losses by premature death from renal cell cancer by a factor of > 10. The net benefit is approximately 1 DALY/million person-years. The application of DALYs in principle allows us to more explicitly compare the public health risks and benefits of different management options. In practice, the application of DALYs may be hampered by the substantial degree of uncertainty, as is typical for risk assessment.  (+info)

Origin and distribution of potassium bromate-induced testicular and peritoneal mesotheliomas in rats. (3/58)

Tissue sections were examined from a 2-year bioassay of male Fischer 344 rats treated with potassium bromate administered in drinking water. All animals exhibiting peritoneal mesotheliomas also had mesotheliomas of the tunica vaginalis testis mesorchium (the reverse was not true), and the correlation of these 2 types of mesotheliomas was highly significant (r2 = 0.98). Mapping of the tunica vaginalis tumors at all time points and at all bromate concentrations revealed a pattern of increasing incidence of tumor formation on the mesothelium of the tunica vaginalis testis as a function of proximity to the mesorchial ligament. Thus, the mesorchium appears to be the major mesothelial target site for potassium bromate-mediated carcinogenesis. The frequency of occurrence of mesotheliomas by location was tunica vaginalis testis (25%), mesosplenium (20%), mesentery (10%), mesojejunum/mesocolon (8%), bladder (6.5%), mesogastrium (13%), liver serosa (5%), and kidney, small intestine, and rectum (1% each). A complete cross-section of the rat testis was prepared and used to construct a complete map of the mesothelium. Any attempt to determine the role of local dose and tissue susceptibility for the purpose of interspecies risk extrapolation must take into account the complex anatomy and physiology of this region of the visceral and testicular suspensory apparatus. Improved histologic approaches are needed for adequate assessment of this delicate suspensory system.  (+info)

The role of glutathione in DNA damage by potassium bromate in vitro. (4/58)

We have investigated the role of reduced glutathione (GSH) in the genetic toxicity of the rodent renal carcinogen potassium bromate (KBrO(3)). A statistically significant increase in the concentration of 8-oxodeoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) relative to deoxyguanosine was measured following incubation of calf thymus DNA with KBrO(3) and GSH or N-acetylcysteine (NACys). This was dependent on these thiols and was associated with the loss of GSH and production of oxidized glutathione. A short-lived (<6 min) intermediate was apparent which did not react with the spin trap dimethylpyrroline N-oxide. DNA oxidation was not evident when potassium chlorate (KClO(3)) or potassium iodate (KIO(3)) were used instead of KBrO(3), though GSH depletion also occurred with KIO(3), but not with KClO(3). Other reductants and thiols in combination with KBrO(3) did not cause a significant increase in DNA oxidation. DNA strand breakage was also induced by KBrO(3) in human white blood cells (5 mM) and rat kidney epithelial cells (NRK-52E, 1.5 mM). This was associated with an apparent small depletion of thiols in NRK-52E cells at 15 min and with an elevation of 8-oxodG at a delayed time of 24 h. Depletion of intra-cellular GSH by diethylmaleate in human lymphocytes decreased the amount of strand breakage induced by KBrO(3). Extracellular GSH, however, protected against DNA strand breakage by KBrO(3), possibly due to the inability of the reactive product to enter the cell. In contrast, membrane-permeant NACys enhanced KBrO(3)-induced DNA strand breakage in these cells. DNA damage by KBrO(3) is therefore largely dependent on access to intracellular GSH.  (+info)

Collaborative study of EPA Method 317.0 for the determination of inorganic oxyhalide disinfection by-products in drinking water using ion chromatography with the addition of a postcolumn reagent for trace bromate analysis. (5/58)

The development of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 317.0 is initiated to provide a sufficiently sensitive and fundamental technique for the compliance monitoring of trace levels of bromate in drinking water. After a comparative evaluation of Method 317.0 and elimination of a chlorite interference, this method is tested by a collaborative study in order to determine the precision and bias of the method and evaluate its potential role as a future compliance-monitoring method for inorganic disinfection by-products (DBPs) and trace bromate. This technique provides a practical method for future compliance monitoring for all of the inorganic oxyhalide DBPs including trace concentrations of bromate.  (+info)

Reaction of acylated homoserine lactone bacterial signaling molecules with oxidized halogen antimicrobials. (6/58)

Oxidized halogen antimicrobials, such as hypochlorous and hypobromous acids, have been used extensively for microbial control in industrial systems. Recent discoveries have shown that acylated homoserine lactone cell-to-cell signaling molecules are important for biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, suggesting that biofouling can be controlled by interfering with bacterial cell-to-cell communication. This study was conducted to investigate the potential for oxidized halogens to react with acylated homoserine lactone-based signaling molecules. Acylated homoserine lactones containing a 3-oxo group were found to rapidly react with oxidized halogens, while acylated homoserine lactones lacking the 3-oxo functionality did not react. The Chromobacterium violaceum CV026 bioassay was used to determine the effects of such reactions on acylated homoserine lactone activity. The results demonstrated that 3-oxo acyl homoserine lactone activity was rapidly lost upon exposure to oxidized halogens; however, acylated homoserine lactones lacking the 3-oxo group retained activity. Experiments with the marine alga Laminaria digitata demonstrated that natural haloperoxidase systems are capable of mediating the deactivation of acylated homoserine lactones. This may illustrate a natural defense mechanism to prevent biofouling on the surface of this marine alga. The Chromobacterium violaceum activity assay illustrates that reactions between 3-oxo acylated homoserine lactone molecules and oxidized halogens do occur despite the presence of biofilm components at much greater concentrations. This work suggests that oxidized halogens may control biofilm not only via a cidal mechanism, but also by possibly interfering with 3-oxo acylated homoserine lactone-based cell signaling.  (+info)

Kinetic spectrophotometric determination of thiocyanate based on its inhibitory effect on the oxidation of methyl red by bromate. (7/58)

A kinetic spectrophotometric method for measuring thiocyanate is described. The proposed method is based on the inhibitory effect of thiocyanate on the oxidation of Methyl Red by bromate in the presence of nitrite, which was monitored at 520 nm. The variables affecting the rate of the reaction were investigated and the optimum conditions were established. Thiocyanate can be measured in the range of 0.05-1.1 microg ml(-1) with a detection limit of 0.025 microg ml(-1). This method has been used to determine trace thiocyanate in urine and tap water samples.  (+info)

Sensitive kinetic-spectrophotometric determination of iodate in iodized table salt based on its accelerating effect on the reaction of bromate with chloride ion in the presence of hydrazine. (8/58)

A simple, precise, sensitive and accurate method was developed for rapid determination of trace quantities of iodate. The method is based on the accelerating effect of iodate on the reaction of bromate and chloride acid in the presence of hydrazine in acidic media. The decolorization of Methyl Orange with the reaction products was used to monitor the reaction spectrophotometrically at 525 nm. Iodate could be determined in the concentration ranges of 0.03 - 1.2 microg ml(-1). The relative standard deviation for ten replicate determinations of 0.3 microg ml(-1) of iodate was 1.65%. The proposed method was applied to the determination of iodate in table salts with satisfactory results.  (+info)

Potassium bromate (KBrO3) is a known prooxidant and carcinogen. Melatonin is a highly effective antioxidant. Indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) an indole substance, and propylothiouracil (PTU) an antithyroid drug, also reveal some antioxidative effects. The aim of the study was to evaluate KBrO3-induced lipid peroxidation in vitro in tissues collected from either control or melatonin-treated rats, and to compare potential preventive effects of melatonin, IPA and PTU.. Kidney, liver and lung homogenates from either the control or the melatonin-treated rats (0.0645 mmol/kg b.w., i.p., twice daily, for 10 days) were incubated in the presence of KBrO3 (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 mM). As prooxidative effect of KBrO3 was observed only in the control lung homogenates, they were then incubated in the presence of KBrO3 (10.0 mM) plus melatonin (0.01, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, 7.5 mM), or IPA or PTU (0.01, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 mM). Another characteristic that consumers like in bread is small, uniform air cells. If you look closely at the bread you will see that there are many small holes in it. Bromate helps the gluten form small, uniform holes in the bread. Without it the holes would be big, the bread more spongy, and butter would melt into the big holes instead of covering your toast evenly. 2. Pure potassium bromate is a toxic chemical. It has also been shown to cause cancer in mice. For a long time it had been thought that all the potassium bromate was destroyed in the dough proofing and baking process. In the 1980s more sensitive chemical tests were developed. These tests are capable of measuring a few part per billion. As an example, the state of Louisiana is about 160 billion square yards in size. One room about 38 feet long on each side (probably about the size of your classroom) would be one part in a billion, where the entire state of Louisiana is the billion. Hypobromous acid (HOBr), a similarly reactive oxidant, lysed red cells approx. 10-fold faster than HOCl. Therefore we compared the effects of these oxidants on thiols, membrane lipids and proteins to determine which reactions are associated with lysis. There was no difference in the loss of reduced glutathione or membrane thiols with either oxidant, but HOBr reacted more readily with membrane lipids and proteins. Bromohydrin derivatives of phospholipids and cholesterol were seen at approx. one-tenth the level of oxidant than chlorohydrins were. However, these products were detected only with high concentrations of HOCl or HOBr, which caused instant haemolysis. Membrane protein modification occurred at much lower doses of oxidant and was more closely correlated with lysis. SDS/PAGE analysis showed that band 3, the anion transport protein, was lost at the lowest ...
Bread and Butter issues in food safety. A recent study by CSE (Centre for Science and Environment) points to the presence of possible cancer-causing chemicals in the prepackaged breads. The specific chemical in question - Potassium Bromate has been used as an oxidising agent for breads and other bakery items like Pao, Bun and Pizza bread. Similarly, Potassium Iodate was also found in samples and is reported to be leading to thyroid disorders.. The results came to the fore when CSEs Pollution Monitoring Laboratory (PML) found residues in 84 percent of the 38 bread and bakery samples it had sourced from retailers In Delhi. The results show that major brands across categories have concentrations ranging from 0 to 22.54 parts per million (ppm) of the chemicals in the sample. Though the discovery was well within the mandated limit of 50 ppm for the chemical, the release of the report by CSE saw stocks of major bread manufacturing companies fall considerably. However, there seems to be more to the ...
It is astounding how much I do not know and even worse, how much I dont know that I dont know! There are many, many ingredients in our food that some say are controversial and some say are safe. For so many of these items, the best we can do is research and make the best decision for our own family.. Several years ago, I became aware that some flours contain bromate and some do not. It is called a "maturing agent". One of the reasons potassium bromate is added is to increase gluten strength. Some commercial bakers use bromated flour because it consistently produces a strong and springy loaf of bread. I make at least 3 loaves of bread each week and for the past few years, Ive use only unbromated flour and most whove had my bread will say its a pretty darned good loaf of bread.. Some foreign countries have banned bromate addition to flour. California requires very strict labeling if bromated flour (or bromate) has been used in baked goods. To varying degrees, other states have requirements ...

The BZ reaction is an example of a chemical oscillator, a system which instead of arriving at a steady state transitions between two different chemical states (which two states have two different colors, whence the waves above). Boris Belousov discovered it in the 1950s when he happened to mix together potassium bromate, cerium(IV) sulfate, propanedioic acid and citric acid in dilute sulfuric acid (hell, why not?); he made two attempts to publish his findings, but was rejected from peer-reviewed journals because he couldnt explain why the oscillations occurred ...

The etiology of WDPM has not been clearly elucidated. It has been suggested that proliferative lesions might be related to local trauma, herniorrhaphy, or a long-term hydrocele.17 A relationship between asbestos exposure and mesotheliomas of the tunica has been postulated. Only one case of WDPM of the tunica vaginalis in the literature had a history of asbestos exposure7 and one had a history of a household contact with exposure.4 Our case had no asbestos exposure like the rest majority of reported cases. In addition to asbestos, potassium bromate in drinking water has been shown to increase the risk of MM of the tunica vaginalis in an animal model.15 SV40 is a DNA monkey virus that has been associated with MM and has been implicated in mesotheliomas of the pleura. SV40 contaminated polio vaccines produced between 1955 and 1978 are postulated to have been the route of virus transmission from monkeys to humans. Many studies have demonstrated the presence of SV40 in pleural mesotheliomas through ...

Chemical waves in a Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reagent. This is a well-mixed solution of citric acid, potassium bromate and a cerium sulphate catalyst. If the local relative concentrations in the reagent are altered, for example by the impact of a dust particle on the surface, the equilibrium of the reaction is disturbed. The reaction then oscillates between oxidation and reduction. The oscillation propagates through the solution as a concentration front (yellow lines), caused by the dynamic coupling between the propagation rate of the reaction and the rates of diffusion of the reagents. Such chemical waves may be modeled using chaos mathematics. This image is part of a series.. ...

Cromakalim (INN) is a potassium channel-opening vasodilator. The active isomer is levcromakalim. It acts on ATP-sensitive potassium channels and so causes membrane hyperpolarization. It can be used to treat hypertension as it will relax vascular smooth muscle to lower blood pressure. Hyperpolarisation of smooth muscle cell membranes pulls their membrane potential away from the threshold, so making it more difficult to excite them and thereby cause contraction. Reaction of 4-cyanophenol (4-Hydroxybenzonitrile) with 2-hydroxy-2-methyl-3-butyne under PTC probably proceeds to initial formation of a propargyl carbocation. The course of the reaction can be envisaged by assuming that this then attacks the aromatic ring; the resulting allylic cation can then capture the adjacent phenol oxygen and thus form the observed product (3). Treatment of that product with aqueous NBS leads to the addition of the elements of hypobromous acid and formation of the bromohydrin (4) as a mixture of the trans ...
Hypobromous acid addition to steroid dienes I-VI proceeds in four steps. The reaction commences by the attack on more reactive endocyclic double bond from the α-side yielding intermediary diaxial bromohydrins XXVIII, XXXIV, XL, XLIV, L and LVI via corresponding α-bromonium ions. The 10β-vinyl group of the bromohydrins then reacts with a second equivalent of the reagent forming transient 19-epimeric bromonium ions. The ions generated from I, II, V and VI are cleaved intramolecularly by the hydroxyl group, in accordance with the Markovnikov rule, giving rise to 19-epimeric dibromo epoxides XXXIa and XXXIIa, XXXVII and XXXVIII, LIIIa and LIVa, LIX and LX. By contrast, the ions generated from III and IV are cleaved in an anti-Markovnikov manner to yield dibromo epoxides XLII, XLVII and XLVIII. Products due to formation of a new C-C bond were not observed. The reaction mechanism and differences in the behaviour of the dienes I-VI are discussed.. ...

Gravimetry is a highly precise quantitative analytical techniquie. It provides very little room for instrumental error and does not require a series of standards for calculation of an unknown. We offer a wide range of gravimetric reagents used for precipitation of the analyte. The precipitate can then be collected by filtration, washed, dried to remove traces of moisture from the solution, and weighed. The amount of analyte in the original sample can then be calculated from the mass of the precipitate and its chemical composition.

The invention concerns a procedure for keeping and taking into use an analytic reagent or another substance used in analyses, and a reagent package to be used in the procedure. The package consists of a gas-tight sachet or of a combination consisting of several sachets, where the sachets comprises at least one flexible wall and a blank for forming a discharge aperture. The blank may consist of a hermetically sealed flexible tube extending into the interior of the sachet or a bar-like member with openings defined therein that extend into the sachets. The taking into use of the substance packed in the sachet is then accomplished by opening the flexible tube or the openings in the bar-like member and connecting the tube or the openings to the analyzer with an outward gas-tight connection. The substance is thereafter drawn from the sachet into said apparatus in one or several steps so that the sachet will collapse in connection with the discharge. Thanks to the gas-tight sealing of the sachet and of the

Eosinophil peroxidase and myeloperoxidase use hydrogen peroxide to produce hypobromous acid and hypochlorous acid. These powerful oxidants may damage the lungs if they are produced as part of the inflammatory response in asthma. The aim of this study was to determine if peroxidases generate hypohalous acids in the airways of individuals with stable asthma, and if they affect lung function. Sputum was induced from patients with mild to moderate asthma and from healthy controls. Eosinophil peroxidase, myeloperoxidase, chlorinated and brominated tyrosyl residues, and protein carbonyls were measured in sputum supernatants. Eosinophil peroxidase protein was significantly elevated in asthmatic subjects whereas myeloperoxidase protein was not. There was significantly more 3-bromotyrosine (Br-Tyr) in proteins from the sputum of asthmatics compared to controls (0.79 vs. 0.23 mmol Br-Tyr/mol Tyr; medians p , .0001). Levels of 3-chlorotyrosine (0.23 vs. 0.14 mmol Cl-Tyr/mol Tyr; medians p = .11) and ...
Photocatalysed degradation of a fungicide derivative, thiram has been investigated in aqueous suspensions of titanium dioxide as a function of irradiation time under a variety of conditions. The degradation kinetics were studied under different conditions such as pH, catalyst concentration, substrate concentration, different types of TiO2 and in the presence of electron acceptors such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), potassium bromate (KBrO3) and ammonium persulphate (NH4)2S2O8 besides molecular oxygen. The degradation rates were found to be strongly influenced by all the above parameters. The photocatalyst, Degussa P25 was found to be more efficient as compared to other photocatalysts tested. All the electron acceptors markedly enhanced the degradation of the compound under investigation. The efficiency of degradation was found to be slower under sunlight as compared to the artificial light source. The degradation products were analyzed by GC-MS technique and probable pathways for the formation of ...

Calcium iodates are inorganic compound composed of calcium and iodate anion. Two forms are known, anhydrous Ca(IO3)2 and the hexahydrate Ca(IO3)2(H2O). Both are colourless salts that occur naturally as the minerals called lautarite and bruggenite, respectively. A third mineral form of calcium iodate is dietzeite, a salt containing chromate with the formula Ca2(IO3)2CrO4. Lautarite, described as the most important mineral source of iodine, is mined in the Atacama Desert. Processing of the ore entails reduction of its aqueous extracts with sodium bisulfite to give sodium iodide. Via a comproportionation reaction, the sodium iodide is combined with the iodate salt to produce elemental iodine. Calcium iodate can be produced by the anodic oxidation of calcium iodide or by passing chlorine into a hot solution of lime in which iodine has been dissolved. Calcium iodate can also be used as an iodine supplement in chicken feed. Calcium iodate is used in the manufacture of disinfectants, antiseptics, and ...
The kinetics of iodate formation during chlorination of iodide-containing waters is a key factor in the formation of iodoorganic compounds. In contrast to bromate, iodate is considered to be non-toxic. A strategy to reduce the formation of potentially toxic iodoorganic compounds could be to ensure the rapid conversion of iodide to iodate. The observed kinetics of oxidation of iodide by chlorine cannot explain the conversion of iodide to iodate typically observed in water treatment. It has been demonstrated in this study that the formation of bromine by oxidation of bromide during chlorination enhances the oxidation of iodide to iodate. The kinetics of oxidation of iodide by bromine were determined to be relatively fast. Oxidation of iodide by bromine was found to depend on the pH, where a maximum of the reaction rate occurred at pH 9.6, which is the mean of the two pKa values of the main species involved in the limiting reaction (HOBr and HOI). The rate was controlled by the reaction of HOBr + ...
In the present work, a simple and rapid method for determination of iodate is described. Iodometric reaction between iodate, excess iodide, and acid has been used, and the iodine liberated is allowed to react with variamine blue (VB) dye in the presence of sodium acetate to yield a violet-colored species. A calibration curve was obtained in the concentration range of 2 to 30 μg of iodate in a final equilibration volume of 10 mL. The effect of different interfering anions on determination of iodate was also studied. The developed method was applied to iodate determination in various iodized salt samples obtained from local markets in and around Pune city, India. The amount of iodate in various table salt samples was in the range of 10 to 25 ppm.

An olefin polymerization and copolymerization catalyst active in the presence of an alkyl aluminum cocatalyst is prepared by mixing, in the presence of a solvent, particles of a silica or alumina material having reactive surface groups, and a complex of the general formula (MgR2)m (AlR3 )n where R and R are alkyl groups and m/n is between about 0.5 and 10, inclusive, to form a hydrocarbon insoluble reaction product which is then mixed, in the presence of a solvent, with a titanium, vanadium or zirconium halide, oxyhalide or alkoxyhalide, followed by evaporation of the solvent.
Ion Chromatography is especially suited for the separation of inorganic ions, metal complexes and low molecular weight organic species. It is used intensively in environmental analysis. It was one of natures own defense mechanisms that provided the inspiration for the approach now taken by the team of scientists working under Professor Dr. Wolfgang Tremel of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry at JGU. Certain enzymes found in brown and red algae produce halogen compounds that have a biocidal potential. It is assumed that these are synthesized by the algae to protect them against microbial attack and predators. The chemists at Mainz University decided to mimic this process using vanadium pentoxide nanoparticles. According to their article published in Nature Nanotechnology, vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanoparticles have "an intrinsic biomimetic bromination activity […] which makes them a practical and cost-efficient alternative for conventional chemical biocides." Vanadium pentoxide functions as a catalyst so that hydrogen peroxide and bromide combine to form small quantities of hypobromous acid, which is highly toxic to many microorganisms and has a ...
The stabilities and speciation of the halamines in water are difficult to characterize experimentally. We provide theoretical estimates of aqueous standard free energies of formation for inorganic chloramines, bromamines, and bromochloramines, based on high-accuracy theoretical standard free energies of formation in gas phase combined with quantum chemical estimates of Henrys law constant. Based on comparisons between several theoretical and experimental datasets, we assign an error of 1.1-1.2 log unit for equilibrium constants of several reactions leading to halamines in water. The reactions of ammonia with HOCl or HOBr that lead to dichloramine, trichloramine, and tribromamine are found to be thermodynamically more favorable than was previously believed. The newly reported equilibrium data also allow us to propose rate constant values for some hydrolysis and disproportionation reactions of dichloramine, monobromamine, and bromochloramine. Finally, theoretical results indicate aqueous acid

and early 2000s, a new concept has been introduced to the analytical chemistry technique that is green analytical chemistry by which natural or unrefined reagents are used as replacement for highly refined or purified reagents [11] . Since then, the use of this method has widely spread and has been used for quantitative analysis of many materials [12] -[16] . In analytical chemistry, green chemistry concepts have led to simpler analytical processes that are lower in operational cost and more rapid in order to reduce energy consumption [17] [18] .. In this work we aim to use a mixture of potassium permanganate and Henna extract as a reagent for determination of cefadroxil spectrophotometrically. Henna (Lawsonia inermis Linn) is a plant which grows wildly in abandoned areas. The dye derived from green leaves of henna is used to decorate the body with intricate designs and the principle coloring matter is lawsone, 2-hydroxy-1, 4-naphthoqunone [19] . Lawsone is chiefly responsible for the colorant ...
During the ozonation of tetracycline (TC) in aqueous media at pHs 2.2 and 7.0, the effects of pH variations, protonation and dissociation of functional groups and variation in free radical exposure were investigated to elucidate the transformation pathway. Liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry detected around 15 ozonation products, and uncovered their production and subsequent degradation patterns. During ozonation at pH 2.2, the TC degradation pathway was proposed on the basis of the structure, ozonation chemistry and mass spectrometry data of TC. Ozonation of TC at the C11a-C12 and C2-C3 double bonds, aromatic ring and amino group generated products of m/z 461, 477, 509 and 416, respectively. Further ozonation at the above mentioned sites gave products of m/z 432, 480, 448, 525 and 496. The removal of TOC reached a maximum of approximate to 40% after 2 h of ozonation, while TC was completely removed within 4-6 min at both pHs. The low TOC removal efficiency might be due to ...

Inorganic iodide compounds are soluble in water and hygroscopic except a few inorganic iodides such as copper iodide. Their refractive indexes and specific gravities are higher than the corresponding chlorine and bromine analogues. The important iodides commercially are potassium iodide (KI), sodium iodide (NaI), hydrogen iodide (HI), and polyiodides. Potassium and sodium Iodide are used in photography and as analytical reagents. They are used in the measurement of the energy of gamma rays, by measuring the amplitude of pulses of light generated by electrons which are excited by the gamma rays. They are used as nutrition supplements to prevent goitre and other iodine deficiency in human body. They are used in organic synthesis as well. Potassium iodide has been used as a mucolytic agent. Potassium iodide is used as a heat stabilizer and a catalyst in synthetic fiber manufacturing. Hydriodic acid is the aqueous pale yellow solution of gas hydrogen iodide; the solution of 59% hydrogen iodide has ...
Drinking water disinfection byproducts suggests a possible connection to adverse health effects, including neurological diseases such as Alzheimers, a new study has warned.. University of Illinois scientists report the first identification of a cellular mechanism linked to the toxicity of a major class of drinking water disinfection byproducts.. "Im not implying that drinking disinfected water will give you Alzheimers," said Michael Plewa, lead scientist and professor of genetics in the U of I Department of Crop Sciences.. "Certainly, the disinfection of drinking water was one of the most significant public health achievements of the 20th century. But the adverse effects of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) that are unintentionally formed during this process are causing concerns as researchers unveil their toxicity.". More than 600 DBPs have been discovered. Although researchers know some DBPs are toxic, little biological information is available on the majority of these water contaminants. The ...
