Occupational stress in human computer interaction. (1/23)

There have been a variety of research approaches that have examined the stress issues related to human computer interaction including laboratory studies, cross-sectional surveys, longitudinal case studies and intervention studies. A critical review of these studies indicates that there are important physiological, biochemical, somatic and psychological indicators of stress that are related to work activities where human computer interaction occurs. Many of the stressors of human computer interaction at work are similar to those stressors that have historically been observed in other automated jobs. These include high workload, high work pressure, diminished job control, inadequate employee training to use new technology, monotonous tasks, por supervisory relations, and fear for job security. New stressors have emerged that can be tied primarily to human computer interaction. These include technology breakdowns, technology slowdowns, and electronic performance monitoring. The effects of the stress of human computer interaction in the workplace are increased physiological arousal; somatic complaints, especially of the musculoskeletal system; mood disturbances, particularly anxiety, fear and anger; and diminished quality of working life, such as reduced job satisfaction. Interventions to reduce the stress of computer technology have included improved technology implementation approaches and increased employee participation in implementation. Recommendations for ways to reduce the stress of human computer interaction at work are presented. These include proper ergonomic conditions, increased organizational support, improved job content, proper workload to decrease work pressure, and enhanced opportunities for social support. A model approach to the design of human computer interaction at work that focuses on the system "balance" is proposed.  (+info)

Effects of VDT tasks with a bright display at night on melatonin, core temperature, heart rate, and sleepiness. (2/23)

The effects of performing video display terminal (VDT) tasks with a bright display (BD) at night on nocturnal salivary melatonin concentration, rectal temperature, heart rate, and sleepiness were examined. Seven healthy male adults performed exciting VDT tasks with a BD and a dark display (DD) and boring VDT tasks with a BD and a DD from 2300 to 0200. The light intensities of the BD and DD were 45 and 15 lx at each subject's eye level, respectively. The exciting VDT task with both BD and DD significantly suppressed the nocturnal decrease in rectal temperature and heart rate and the nocturnal increase in sleepiness. The BD significantly suppressed the nocturnal decrease in rectal temperature during both exciting and boring VDT tasks. The nocturnal salivary melatonin concentration was significantly suppressed by the combination of the exciting task and BD. The results suggest that performing an exciting VDT task with a BD suppresses the nocturnal changes in melatonin concentration and other physiological indicators of human biological clocks.  (+info)

Incidence of and risk factors for nodding off at scientific sessions. (3/23)

We conducted a surreptitious, prospective, cohort study to explore how often physicians nod off during scientific meetings and to examine risk factors for nodding off. After counting the number of heads falling forward during 2 days of lectures, we calculated the incidence density curves for nodding-off episodes per lecture (NOELs) and assessed risk factors using logistic regression analysis. In this article we report our eye-opening results and suggest ways speakers can try to avoid losing their audience.  (+info)

Nodding and napping in medical lectures: an instructive systematic review. (4/23)

A comprehensive, international systematic review, spanning more than 100 years of data collection, suggests that soporific lectures at medical meetings are common, annoying and persistent. Low lights and boring material are prominent risk factors for nodding off during presentations. Extreme remedial measures are warranted.  (+info)

Behavioural reactivation and subjective assessment of the state of vigilance--application to simulated car driving. (5/23)

The frequency of some behaviour (such as self-centred gestures) increases during a task that leads to the occurrence of low-vigilance episodes. These gestures can be useful in stimulating oneself. A study carried out in 20 adults has enabled us to state that motor activity (recorded with an actimeter) increases with the duration of a monotonous driving task and sleep deprivation. The analysis of the scores recorded using the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale has shown that drivers can assess the deterioration of their state of vigilance according to the actual sleep preceding the driving test. Finally, the joint analysis of the subjective and objective data revealed a co-variation of these two types of indices. We discuss the stimulatory function of the motor activity in a task leading to the occurrence of low-vigilance episodes by investigating, among other things, the use, conscious or not, of this type of activity.  (+info)

Determinants of daily smoking in Turkish young adults in the Netherlands. (6/23)

BACKGROUND: As little is known about the determinants of smoking in large ethnic minorities in the Netherlands and other Western European countries, we studied the determinants of smoking young adult offspring of Turkish migrants to the Netherlands. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of 439 Turkish adults (18-28 y) in 2003. Smokers were compared with never smokers for five groups of determinants: demographic and socioeconomic factors, behavioral and emotional problems, psychosocial factors, and cultural factors. Associations were measured by prevalence rate ratios. RESULTS: Prevalences for men were 51% for daily smoking, 12% for former smoking, and 38% for never smoking. For women they were 44%, 11%, and 47%, respectively. Without adjustment for other determinants, higher prevalence was associated with: emotional problems, boredom, life events, and being male; and, specifically among women, with low self-esteem and having children. The strongest determinants of daily smoking In multivariate models were alcohol use and demographic and socio-economic factors. Of the cultural factors only strong Muslim identification was associated with lower smoking prevalence. CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of smoking warrants action. Many of the well-known determinants of smoking in Western countries were also important among young adults from ethnic minorities. Women with children and people of a low educational level deserve special attention.  (+info)

Increases in impulsivity following smoking abstinence are related to baseline nicotine intake and boredom susceptibility. (7/23)

Trait impulsivity and response inhibition have been shown to be related to smoking behavior. One measure of response inhibition - antisaccade performance, or the ability to inhibit looking at a novel stimulus - has been shown to be worsened by smoking abstinence, improved by nicotine administration and predictive of smoking cessation outcomes. However, relations between antisaccade performance and measures of trait impulsivity have not been extensively evaluated in smokers. In the present study, twelve dependent smokers (n=12) completed an eye tracking task following smoking as usual and overnight abstinence; and they completed baseline measures of trait impulsivity, smoking history and provided biological samples. As expected, overnight abstinence significantly increased antisaccade errors (p<0.002) while having no effect on prosaccade performance. Abstinence-induced increases in antisaccade errors were positively correlated with baseline plasma cotinine and Sensation Seeking Scale Boredom Susceptibility, and negatively correlated with IQ. These results suggest that smoking abstinence significantly increases errors of response inhibition and that the magnitude of this increase is related to trait impulsivity and nicotine intake variables.  (+info)

A comparison of three vulnerability models for the onset of substance use in a high-risk sample. (8/23)

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this prospective study was to compare the following three vulnerability models for early-onset substance use in a high-risk sample: the deviance proneness model, the negative affect regulation model, and a comprehensive model including both delinquency and negative affect. METHOD: The sample included 249 15- to 19-year-old adolescents (57% children of alcoholics) and their fathers, all of whom were seen at follow-up 5 years later. At both times of measurement, participants completed a clinical psychiatric interview and a battery of self-report questionnaires assessing temperament, negative affect, delinquency, and substance use. RESULTS: Although all of the models fit the data well, the deviance proneness model was parsimonious and provided the best fit. Delinquency played a significant mediating role, whereas negative affect did not. Moreover, negative affect and delinquency were not significantly related to one another. CONCLUSIONS: Results from this study suggest that the deviance proneness model may be a more useful theoretical framework than the negative affect regulation model or a comprehensive model when examining the onset of substance use, particularly in a high-risk sample.  (+info)

This study seeks to investigate the correlation between boredom proneness, symptom severity, and hallucination proneness in an inpatient population at a New York State psychiatric hospital. Students working on this research study will have the opportunity to gain hands-on intensive clinical and research experience on an inpatient unit, working with patients who are suffering from severe mental illness. Student volunteers should have a strong interest in clinical psychology, psychopathology (particularly schizophrenia/psychosis), boredom, and clinical assessments. Assisting in this project will involve clinical interviewing and administering self-report questionnaires to patients currently on an inpatient unit. We will be re-administering these measures to the same subjects again two weeks later. Students will be trained to interview using the SANS/SAPS as a guide, and will be given detailed information and instructions regarding the self-report questionnaires (Launay-Slade Hallucination ...

On the whole a society always produces more than is necessary for its survival; it has a surplus at its disposal. It is precisely the use it makes of this surplus that determines it." So writes the rogue Surrealist Georges Bataille. This surplus may be gathered up and dispersed in spiritual quests or in making life over as a work of art. It can be squandered on bombs. Or it can be invested along the lines of strategic expansion or economic accumulation. This laying down of new lines, building from topic to topography to topology, only increases the surplus, and postpones and multiplies the problem: What to do with the idle capacities of a people? What to do with energies that so easily spill over into riot or revolt? Whats the good? Boredom is the ambivalent gift of the surplus. Boredom arises out of the absence of necessity, of a yes, a no, a straight line. Boredom demands new necessities, and if not granted them - produces its own. History is a struggle to wrest necessity from boredom. In ...

The two emotions, loneliness and boredom, are closely allied. They are also both characteristically modern. The Oxford English Dictionarys earliest citations of either word, at least in the contemporary sense, date from the 19th century ... Loneliness is not the absence of company, it is grief over that absence. The lost sheep is lonely; the shepherd is not lonely. But the Internet is as powerful a machine for the production of loneliness as television is for the manufacture of boredom. If six hours of television a day creates the aptitude for boredom, the inability to sit still, a hundred text messages a day creates the aptitude for loneliness, the inability to be by yourself. Some degree of boredom and loneliness is to be expected, especially among young people, given the way our human environment has been attenuated. But technology amplifies those tendencies. You could call your schoolmates when I was a teenager, but you couldnt call them 100 times a day. You could get together with your ...

One of the reasons why many people turn to substance abuse in the beginning is that they feel bored. This is an emotion where people do not experience anything of interest in their surroundings. It is an uncomfortable mind frame that most people will experience from time to time. Those who experience too much boredom may complain that their life is unsatisfying. It opens the door for all sorts of negative thinking. The individual may begin to remember their years of substance abuse as a time of great excitement.. Those who give up an addiction will suddenly have plenty of time on their hands. This is because so much of the life of an addict is focused around obtaining and using their drug of choice. When these people become sober they will have huge gaps in their day with nothing to do. It is therefore vital that they find new things to do or else they risk experiencing boredom. The good news is that those who have been sober for a reasonable amount of time will often complain that they just do ...
A shadowy figure broke into my house, into my room, into my dreams. In that way dreams have of telling us whats going on I knew he was a burglar but he didnt seem interested in burgling anything. All he did was cut me. Over and over he cut me: slices to my ears, stabs on my face, cuts to my arms and hands… painful small cuts, the kind that, added up to 10,000, cause death. Oh, those cuts. They hurt. I screamed.. The scream woke me up. I shuddered, shook my head at the horror of the nightmare and fell back into sleep - and back into the dream.. The cutting man was still there. Not a gloater, he was nothing like Hollywood Evil. Just a man with a grim task to do. His knife looked like a scalpel, blood ran from my cuts. Why was he doing this? Why didnt I fight back? If he was the thief the dream insisted he was, why didnt he just take something and go?. I woke up so quickly at my second scream the sound was still in my room. I was sweating, my heart raced. The cuts burned but I couldnt see ...
It is vital that individuals in recovery find new interests to fill up their time. These can be activities that they once enjoyed prior to becoming addicted or they can be something completely new. These new interests can provide real pleasure and give life purpose. The individual will usually be surprised that there are so many exciting choices available in recovery. They can even start to complain that there are not enough hours in the day to do all the things they want to do, and can now do once they are free from addiction.. A lack of willingness to find new interests in recovery is a bad omen. It could mean that the individual is on the path to relapse. Trying new things can be a bit intimidating, but without a willingness to do this, there is real danger of a return to old behaviors. This is why addiction therapists will spend a lot of time encouraging the client to find things to do with their time.. ...
Everyone has those Facebook friends who post almost everyday with new status updates and filtered selfies. Im not opposed to updating social media, but Im always curious about the other half of Facebook who are media silent. Could it be that those people are living busier, more adventurous lives than the people who are online more often? Or are they just finding more innovative ways to entertain themselves?. Some researchers and authors, like Graham Linehan, argue that while the internet successfully reduces boredom, the constant stream of information leaves no room for innovative or creative thinking. Linehan says, "I have to use all these programs that cut off the internet, force me to be bored, because being bored is an essential part of writing, and the internet has made it very hard to be bored.". Last year psychologists at the University of Central Lancashire conducted an experiment to study boredom and creativity. Two groups were picked for the study. One group was given a tedious task ...

Just got back from the mountains of North and South Carolina, a country of beautiful vistas, gorgeous waterfalls and (at this time of the year) bright autumn leaves. My husband and I stayed a couple of nights in Asheville, an oasis in the desert, in terms of being a bastion of progressivism in an otherwise conservative area. It also seemed to be one of the few places with a thriving economy. The rest of the region is horribly depressed right now, and I dont mean emotionally (although that may in fact be the case). Another area that seemed to be doing all right for itself was Cherokee, located in the Cherokee Indian Reservation. I only say that because my memories of Cherokee date from nearly twenty years ago when we lived in Charlotte. The only word that comes to mind when I think about the town back then is "crummy". The town is still crummy, but maybe not as much as it was. Its still littered with more moccasin stores than you can shake a stick at, although we did see one old guy, dressed in ...

Due to the typical calendar year of school, and the nature of seasons, parents and children go through cycles of excitement, hope, boredom, and discouragement. However, most of these individuals are not aware that these cycles are normal and predictable. Let me be a bit more specific. At the start of the school year, most parents and children are excited for the year to begin. New clothes are bought, new teachers are met, a new binder is organized, and friends whom you have not seen for the entire summer are seen again. However, after period of time, the reality of the school year sets in. The newness wears off. Some boredom and discouragement sets in. This happens between the middle of October until the holidays. The holidays give a positive boost to many people because there are things to look forward to during the holiday break. In January, most children and parents are excited for school to begin. However, they are probably not as excited before. From the latter part of January until spring ...
Veritas Vision A bit of boredom and a bit of spice marked Veritas CEO Gary Blooms opening speech here at the Veritas Vision conference.. The boredom charge may come off harsh, but the accusation is most certainly apt as Bloom spoke with massive "Utility Now" signs surrounding him on stage. The utility computing message is all well and good, but you have to wonder if its time hasnt passed.. For years, companies such as IBM, EMC, HP and Sun Microsystems have littered the collective mind of the IT industry with fanciful analogies comparing the delivery of processing power or storage with turning on a faucet and watching water trickle out. And here, about thirty minutes into Blooms keynote, the exec had the audacity to keep the water dream alive, walking the Veritas audience through the inner-workings of water delivery systems and all of their glory. Seriously, he did.. Given this staid performance, you might think Bloom hasnt heard the fluff charges surrounding utility computing. Not ...

Prisoner doctors tell of the fate of two Hungarian twins who arrived at Auschwitz late in 1943. Dr. Mengele was at the camp selection. The train arrived in the very early morning. Three sets of twins were found. They were taken to the experimental block. Dr. Mengele ordered the two Hungarian twins be placed in the examination room. The two Hungarian twins young men age 18 were described as extremely athletic and handsome. They had much body hair and were allowed to keep it for the first few weeks. The twins were showered and returned nude to the examination room. The examination started at the head . All parts of their heads were examined. The head examination took almost days. They were then completely X-rayed . The next part of the examination consisted of tubes being forced through their noses and into their lungs. They were then ventilated with a gas which caused them to cough so severely they had to be restrained. The sputum from the lungs was collected for examination ...

316 evano ~ 28 January 2006 at 10:21 PM. This may be duplicating something in one of the 311 comments before mine, but, I found this article (http://tinyurl.com/c9qwc) on the Center for Indidvidual Freedom (CFIF) site discussing freedom of speech issues regarding specialty and vanity plates. In 2002, when the article was published, the author reported, "Texas has over 150 designs; Virginia more than 300. Not to be one-upped by its southern neighbor, Maryland has over 350 designs." At the Maryland MVA site, they have a listing (http://tinyurl.com/cq7jr) of all the plates you can get, with links to images of each one. There are hundreds! 25 for "A", including the Annapolis Woodworkers Association, 56 for "B", including the Baltimore Duckpin Bowlers Association. I only counted as far as "F" - 196 different plates in the first 6 letters of the alphabet. Id be hard-pressed to believe theres a state with more!. ...
I have a couple of techniques to try to make the time pass. At the beginning of the workout I throw a towel over the display and ignore the time for as long as I can - I listen to the music or watch the TVs for distraction for as long as I can ignore the grind. If I find I cant ignore it anymore, I actually concentrate on the time more - Ill literally count down the seconds / minutes, usually by marking a minute and then counting footsteps or elliptical cycles or whatever. Ill figure out how many steps to a minute and then start to do the math in my head - OK, 10 minutes left, 80 steps per minute, 800 steps left, etc. Or Ill try to figure out exactly what the distance will be when I hit 30 minutes or some other calculation. Helps to distract from the time passing and since my pace is never super constant I have to keep updating it ...
But as a friend, who is also native to Blacksburg, recently pointed out: there isnt anywhere in Blacksburg to buy underwear. An odd, yet valid point that perfectly illustrates a town, which continues to struggle balancing development with retaining the characteristics of a small college town.. Anyway, it is always nice to get away It is interesting how you can find so much more time when you are separated from the simple responsibilities of being in your own space! And, it is always nice to have someone cook for you and make coffee every morning!. Ahhhhh!. The kids also get a break from their norm with the added benefit of hugs from Grandma and ice cream every night after dinner.. I also love that my parents have never believed in subscribing to the latest and greatest in technology, so screens arent really an entertainment option. Playing Minecraft isnt even a distant thought. While we use screens some at home, I dont much agree with the idea of them and you might catch me dramatically ...
Keep in mind that your patients may not admit to feelings of boredom or loneliness because they dont want to "bother" you, and they may believe the common misperception that hospitals are strictly for physical healing. As nurses, we recognize the importance of treating patients physical AND psychosocial needs. Including the risk for boredom in your care plan is no less important than any other psychosocial risk. Diversional activities can transform the hospital environment as well as change your patients state of mind. Make a difference by implementing an Activity Menu kit, or something similar, at your facility. Mrs. R chooses the art making and listening to music from the Activity Menu. While walking and hiking are certainly related activities, they are also quite different. Compared to walking on flat ground, hiking on uneven terrain increases the amount of energy your body uses by 28 percent, according to one University of Michigan study.. Hiking involves navigating varying ground slopes, and paths that go up, down and sideways. All of this requires slight shifts in the way your leg muscles work. This increases the amount of energy you use during your hike.. Because hiking is more physically demanding, it isnt without its share of risks. Its likely you will use muscles in your hips, knees and ankles you wouldnt normally use.. Hiking can help improve balance and stability, and protect you from falls. Using all those different muscles can also prevent overuse injuries, such as knee or hip pain, that comes from walking or running on level ground.. Time.com External Site, July 2017 ...

The old argument "I can get all this on the web" doesnt hold water for me much more these days. I love the feel of printed pages; the ability to scribble notes and highlight; the freedom to rip out pages and tape them to the wall. Case in point: I read most of this issue during a flight to Seattle last week.. Second, .net recently underwent a redesign of the mag itself. Bold colors, solid typography, and beautiful illustrations enhance the already compelling content. It feels the way Id expect a web design magazine to feel. Needless to say, the overall package - content and presentation - makes for an engaging read.. But above all, perhaps the biggest surprise came as I stumbled on pages 34-38 ("How to redesign a website") only to find my name in print. I had completely forgotten that Jason Walsh interviewed me a few weeks ago regarding website redesigns. (Hence, the complementary copy.) Included are several quotes from our conversation.. How about where the magazine falls short? Only a few ...
We often talk about being bored, but is it actually it? Or is it more likely that were talking about being agitated and anxious instead?

It took way longer than I wouldve liked, but finally (and I type that with a massive sigh of relief), we have internet again.. The last week and a half/two weeks of our life seriously dragged on endlessly. The first four days were the most brutal, especially for the kids who complained relentlessly about their boredom, even though the parents were working hard to entertain them. We bothered Grandma and overstayed our welcome on more than one occasion just so that we could get a few minutes break from the constancy of their complaining.. By day five, we had kinda started to relax about it, it wasnt so overwhelming. The kids had finally realized that they were going to have to deal with their boredom and eventually the boys spent more and more time consumed in their lego sets and Kaeidyn picked up some yarn and started finger knitting again.. I dont think we truly went a full two weeks without internet, because we were able to check in on it when we went places with WiFi, but it was still a ...

This study investigated relationships between hostility, Zuckermans sensation seeking, and Eysenck and Eysencks personality scales within a prison population, to explore whether they could be conceptualized in terms of two socialized and unsocialized sensation seeking factors. Participants included 79 incarcerated adult male offenders (age range = 18- 62). Findings support the distinction between socialized and unsocialized sensation seeking and suggest that these factors represent more overarching personality factors. Psychoticism was a clear marker of the more broad impulsive, unsocialized sensation seeking factor, rather than representing a supertrait in its own right. This factor was also represented by lie, disinhibition, and boredom susceptibility scales. Findings relating to hostility also supported such a reformulation, as unsocialized scales did cluster together to predict the unsocialized hostility factor, whereas unsocialized scales did not. The results demonstrate the need for a ...
The Sensation Seeking Scale is one of the most common psychological instrument for measuring sensation seeking. It was created in 1964 by Marvin Zuckerman, at the University of Delaware. Zuckerman created the scale with the purpose of better understanding personality traits such as neuroticism, antisocial behavior, and psychopathy. This has gone through a few iterations and is currently on its 1978 version: SSS-V. There are 4 different aspects (subscales), which are: Thrill and Adventure Seeking (TAS), Disinhibition (Dis), Experience Seeking (ES), and Boredom Susceptibility (BS). Each subscale contains 10 items, making a total of 40 items. Zuckerman has proposed that these traits come from a psycho-biological interaction. The first Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS) was created by Martin Zuckerman and others in 1964. This was considered Form I and Form II was similar, though slightly revised. Analysis and use of these two forms showed that there was more than one dimension to sensation seeking ...
noinclude>{{:ArticleSchool}},/noinclude> == Definition == The term learn drive is essential for proving the inefficiency of [[Problem of Schooling, schooling]]. {{Important note,The learn drive is a natural tendency of the brain to seek new information. The learn drive is generated by a guidance system hard-wired in the brain. This guidance system activates the reward centers upon detecting novel patterns in memory storage.}} == Terminology == I purposefully avoid the term curiosity, which is often used in psychology. Without precise understanding of the mechanisms of the learn drive, my whole reasoning against the present school system would collapse. The need for a simple and precise term will become clearer when I explain why I do not want to employ other established terms that might easily be misconstrued. Terms such as curiosity, novelty seeking, boredom susceptibility, openness to experience, need of cognition, and intellectual engagement are often used in various contexts to ...
Friedmans "fundamental theorem" of biomedical informatics states that the combination of human intelligence and information resources is more powerful than human intelligence alone. Realizing the potential benefits of this combination requires careful attention to the design and evaluation of user interfaces that will help users maximize the utility of information resources. Harry Hochheiser, PhD uses techniques of contextual inquiry and prototyping to develop bioinformatics interfaces for the FaceBase project. In collaboration with Steve Handler, MD, PhD, Dr. Hochheiser is exploring human-computer interaction issues related to geriatric care, including evaluation of drug delivery systems (with support of the PA Department of Aging) and the re-engineering of rounding reports. Claudia Mello-Thoms, PhD uses eye-tracking and cognitive techniques to study the behavior of radiologists in analyzing images. Other HCI related efforts include Rebecca Crowleys evaluations of medical tutoring systems, ...
Activity theory holds that the human mind is the product of our interaction with people and artifacts in the context of everyday activity. Acting with Technology makes the case for activity theory as a basis for understanding our relationship with technology. Victor Kaptelinin and Bonnie Nardi describe activity theorys principles, history, relationship to other theoretical approaches, and application to the analysis and design of technologies. The book provides the first systematic entry-level introduction to the major principles of activity theory. It describes the accumulating body of work in interaction design informed by activity theory, drawing on work from an international community of scholars and designers. Kaptelinin and Nardi examine the notion of the object of activity, describe its use in an empirical study, and discuss key debates in the development of activity theory. Finally, they outline current and future issues in activity theory, providing a comparative analysis of the theory ...
The limited efficiency of current air traffic systems will require a next-generation of Smart Air Traffic System (SATS) that relies on current technological advances. This challenge means a transition toward a new navigation and air-traffic procedures paradigm, where pilots and air traffic controllers perform and coordinate their activities according to new roles and technological supports. The design of new Human-Computer Interactions (HCI) for performing these activities is a key element of SATS. However efforts for developing such tools need to be inspired on a parallel characterization of hypothetical air traffic scenarios compatible with current ones. This paper is focused on airborne HCI into SATS where cockpit inputs came from aircraft navigation systems, surrounding traffic situation, controllers indications, etc. So the HCI is intended to enhance situation awareness and decision-making through pilot cockpit. This work approach considers SATS as a system distributed on a large-scale with

The aim of this study was to test whether personality traits of impulsivity, sensitivity to punishment and reward, and sensation seeking were associated with adults with ADHD and to test whether these measured traits were aspects of the clinical phenotype or instead predisposing personality risk factors for ADHD. Our results suggest that high impulsivity traits, hypersensitivity to reward and susceptibility to boredom are part of the clinical phenotype of adults with ADHD, rather than personality traits harbouring an increased risk for the disorder, as unaffected first-degree relatives did not show a similar pattern of traits. Moreover, results also show that in this study adults with ADHD are not more indifferent to punishment or more sensation seekers than their relatives and controls. These results could not be explained by nonspecific confounds such as age since it was not statistically different between groups. A limitation of the study may be the difference in IQ between ADHD and control ...

Lethargy is a state of tiredness, weariness, fatigue, or lack of energy. It can be accompanied by depression, decreased motivation, or apathy. Lethargy can be a normal response to inadequate sleep, overexertion, overworking, stress, lack of exercise, improper nutrition, boredom, or a symptom of a disorder. It may also be a side-effect of medication or caused by an interaction between medications or medication(s) and alcohol. When part of a normal response, lethargy often resolves with rest, adequate sleep, decreased stress, physical exercise and good nutrition. Many smokers try to quit smoking but fall back into the same habit for various reasons. Anyone that has been through this kind of experience may attest that it almost feels like a rollercoaster. The experience itself is not pleasant when one thinks about the dangers of smoking. As such, it is important to understand why most smokers go into a relapse so that you can kick the habit on your first try or become successful if it is another attempt. But, before delving into that, one might ask why quitting smoking seems so hard?. Well, smoking tobacco slowly turns into a physical addiction over time. The nicotine rush from cigarettes provides a temporary and addictive high. Cutting off nicotine consumption causes the body to experience physical withdrawal symptoms and cravings. At the same time, the feel good effect of nicotine makes smoking a psychological habit. As a result, smokers may be accustomed to taking a few puffs as a way of dealing with depression, stress, anxiety, or even boredom. ...

Increase Intrinsic Cognitive Load (Signal):. The cultivation of attention (improved working memory performance) can actually be made easier by increasing the difficulty of our work (increased signal). When the challenge of what we are doing matches our skill, it is easier to become engaged. Increased engagement has been correlated with higher levels of productivity, quality and well-being. Too little difficulty for our skill level (think EMR clicks, pre-authorization paperwork, or self-editing reports/charts) causes fatigue and boredom. This is often relieved by seeking out distractions. When our work is above our skill level (under-prepared for a lecture), we become anxious and overwhelmed-both of which are also relieved by distractions. The degree of difficulty of our professional work is especially relevant to the current practice of medicine. In a 1992 study Survey finds Low Office Productivity linked to Staffing Imbalances, economist Peter Sassone found that technological advances allowed ...
It is remarkable to find how many people eat out of boredom, sheer habit, or to the accompaniment of a newspaper, a book, or a heated business discussion. Many succumb to the habit of eating at a "minute" diner, fast food restaurant or lunch counter, gulping their food and running a "hoof and mouth" race with Father Time. (He always wins.). Others are trained from childhood to stuff themselves-"finish your plate" (An old relic of primitive days when food scarcities or the uncertainties of a next meal or a next day were constantly present). Some call this "scavenger eating;" many children acquire this habit by imitating their parents who are imitating their parents who may have been raised under food scarcity circumstances.. Many men and women rarely vary the selection and choice of foods out of sheer inertia, indifference, or lack of attention. So they try to make up in quantity what they lack in quality, seeking satisfaction from calories instead of from quality and contrast. They are often the ...

We talked to the trainer some more. Since the door of the wire crate is loose, its almost like its just ASKING to be pushed open-- ya know, now she knows she can get it open and so shell keep trying to bust out. The trainer really didnt feel like it was a crating issue per se (not an oh crap, Im in a box help! issue), and more like a boredom/wanting to be where everyone else is issue. So I think for the time being, well continue to use the wire crate at night, as its in our bedroom and she sleeps in it pretty well now-- a little fussy sometimes, but getting into a routine. Then well put the pet porter in the same room as Robins crate out in the rest of the house and use it when were gone during the day. Digiciv was a remarkable experience because it taught me to learn in a whole new way. The focus of a civilizations course is the history of civilization and at times I feel like a normal civ course would have been easier. In my other civ course, the grade was decided by three written exams that hurt my hand and the lectures beat my brain with boredom. However, I didnt have to do hardly anything, and I got the grade. Digiciv has taught me to keep on learning and to spread my knowledge. Education is not about stuffing my head with soon-to-be irrelevant facts just to dump them on a paper and forget them; education is about learning to make a difference in the world through whatever path I choose. I cant say that I have mastered all the historical content discussed in the course, but Ive learned how to skim works and decide if its worthwhile to share.. ...
The feelings many people get when they hold a sleeping baby in their arms are ones of warmth, comfort and happiness. Doll therapy can be a very therapeutic activity for those with dementia who dont have actual babies in their lives.. Many of the behaviors that we see in those with dementia - pacing, agitation, boredom, sadness - are related to the idea that they dont have a feeling of purpose. Providing a doll to someone with dementia (especially mothers, but this works with males and non-mothers as well) brings out the natural desire and ability to express affection, to nurture and to care for someone.. Doll therapy has been associated with a number of benefits, including a reduction in episodes of distress, an increase in general well-being, improved appetite and more engagement with others around them. Of the three I mentioned, repetition is the most straight forward form of learning. The teacher administers a task and the student repeats the task until they are comfortable recalling the information. Unfortunately repetition can be one of the least engaging forms of learning. An exercise decreases in strength as the student looses interest. Think back to the boredom of elementary math class where you had to repeat problems over and over. I spent many days wanting to bang my head against the desk to prevent the numbing effects of multiplication tables. To break the monotony of repetition an incentive based assignment can be devised. The teacher harnesses the students own desire for the reward to motivate them to complete the task. In a tutoring situation for younger children candy, or any sweet treat, could represent numbers in the students daily problems. If the student successfully multiplies the red jelly beans by the green jelly beans eight out of ten times then they get to eat one bean. ...
Therapeutic interventions focused on the traditional specific adaptations to imposed demand (SAID) principle57 should be adhered to when developing therapeutic intervention plans with proper flexibility in programmatic sequence based on the patients physical (eg, muscle soreness or inflammation) and mental responses (eg, fatigue or boredom). A multifactorial approach to PT allows individuals to focus on the wide array of potentially contributing factors that often lead to overuse injuries; dosage, technique, fatigue, activation patterns, asymmetries, performance outcomes, anatomical alignments, neurological demands, etc.58-60. Modalities and bracing are often used as an adjunct to rest and PT, but limited studies have examined their use in adolescents. Their risks and benefits have been inferred from studies in the adult population and are based on use in clinical practice. Ice and heat are commonly used following injury. Oral acetaminophen may be helpful for short-term pain relief. Several ...
Binge eating is a form of habit that we usually do like biting our nails, hair twirling or finger tapping. Emotional eating is often triggered by boredom, anger, stress and even when you are feeling happy. People who are prone to emotional eating tend to feel like eating is their only way to fill up their needs. Most people who are under stressed do not realize that they are munching and working at the same time. If that is how we deal certain situation in our lives, I believe it can lead to weight gain and affects our health. Many people asked me about how to overcome their cravings in binge eating. Well, I would say that it is not an easy thing to do. It requires self-awareness and discipline in order to overcome the habit.. Finally, I have come up these basic tips on how to overcome emotional eating. Keep in mind that these tips may not work on some people; however you can choose whatever tips that can help you become a better person. These are by far the simplest form of advice on how to ...
Nervous Energy. When stressed or anxious, many people become "orally fidgety." Sometimes this leads to nail biting or teeth grinding, and often it leads to eating when not hungry. Many people, out of nervousness or boredom, just munch on chips or drink soda to give their mouths something to do.. Childhood Habits. Many of us have comforting childhood memories that revolve around food. Whether your parents used to reward you with sweets, fix your boo-boos with an ice cream cone, or make your favorite meal (or take you out to one) to celebrate your successes, youd probably be in the vast minority if you didnt develop some emotionally based attachments to food while growing up. When in times of stress, few things can be as powerfully comforting or rewarding as your favorite food. Because many people dont develop more effective coping strategies, this type of emotional eating is very common: people eat to celebrate, eat to feel better, eat to deal with the stress of being overweight.. Stuffing ...
Considerable attention has been focused on the importance of physical activity in improving the diabetic state in obese, non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients. Because this patient population tends to be sedentary, this challenge requires an active effort involving the patient and health-care providers. The latter may be a team including physician, dietitian, nurse practitioner, and physical therapist. Programs must be individualized. The patient must be a full partner in developing plans and goals. Plans should represent the patients interests, should blend into the daily schedule, and should avoid boredom. Programs are adapted to the patients physical condition and are graduated in duration and intensity. Motivation is stimulated through education and is reinforced both by self-monitoring techniques and monitoring by providers. Such programs add a new dimension to both physical and psychological well-being.. ...
These two thoughts have really kept me on track the last few weeks. Instead of alternating between boredom, depression, and insanity stuck in the house with Erin, Ive tried to reframe the experience (my more humble self must admit that Im not always successful). Anyway, the last two days have been a sweeter elixir for my efforts. Erin is making headway. Believe me, its slow headway and I have to practice patience (repeatedly). Shes frail, weak, and still full of sputum. Her ribs show, her arms are sticks. She still cant leave the house and go very far under her own locomotion. But shes better. We went to Jacksons house yesterday and hung our feet in the hot tub for a while. We sat outside in the best part of the evening contemplating the extraordinary number of birds collecting around our yard to tell us about the arrival of spring. We chuckled our way through The Rachel Maddow Show. She called me over at one point and told me, "I need help. My nose is running again." I brought her a box ...
A factor, in the context of this study, is defined as an influence that existed prior to the change and therefore influenced the teacher to initiate the change process. Flagging Student Interest "Flagging Student Interest" influenced the teachers decision to maintain or change the current curriculum. The participants described a process whereby a lack of student interest in a subject initiated change. The students needs tailored the new curriculum and once a new curriculum was implemented the students enthusiasm provided the impetus for the ongoing change process. Stein, McRobbie, and Ginns (1999) proposed that before teachers fully embrace the new beliefs and practices of the technology curriculum, they need to experience the value through the changes in student learning. In this project the students change from boredom with the traditional program, to a positive response to the technology curriculum, has encouraged the teachers to rethink their attitudes to existing curricula. Drinking games (DGs) participation is prevalent among college-attending emerging adults. Research also suggests that student-athletes play DGs more frequently than non student-athletes, but what motivates student-athletes to participate in DGs is not well understood. Using data from a larger longitudinal study with Division III female athletes, we examined the test-retest reliability and minimal detectable change of the revised 7-factor Motives for Playing Drinking Games (MPDG) measure, and explored how its subscales were related to DGs behavior across two annual timepoints (n = 49). Results indicated that the MPDG shows adequate test-retest reliability over a one year period among student-athletes. Controlling for age and general alcohol consumption, conformity motives were positively associated with DG consumption at timepoint 1, whereas the DG motives of enhancement/thrills and boredom were positively related to DG consumption at timepoint 2. Implications for future research directions on ...

The Baupiloten BDA initiated a participatory-installation as part of the exhibition "Find the Gap" celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Aedes-Architecture Forum in Berlin.. With the four questions: "Where do you most like to kiss?", "Where can you think particularly well?", "Where do you like to feel boredom - meaning to relax?", and "How would your extra-house look?" approached the seminar participants as "De- coders" the architectural dreams of people who are usually paid only little attention in this context: the young and old.. Lust, that state commonly known as "being in love," is a kind of madness. It is a distortion of reality so remarkable that it should, by rights, enable most of us to understand the other forms of lunacy with the sympathy of fellow-sufferers. And yet, as we all know, it is a madness that, however ferocious, seldom, if ever, lasts. Nor, contrary to the popular teaching on the subject, does lust usually give a way to "a deeper and more meaningful love." There are exceptions of course. Some spouses "love" forever. But, as a rule, if the couple is truly well matched, it gives way to a warm and interdependent friendship enhanced by physical attraction. Should they be ill-sorted it simply fades into boredom or, if they have the misfortune of being married in the interim, dull hatred. But, paradoxically, mad and suffering as one is, and the heat of the flame, few of us are glad as we feel that passion slip away. How many of us, re-meeting objects of desire who once burned a scar through seasons and even ...
Southern Guangdong province, which has 110 million people, ordered residents to wear face masks in public.. Other local governments have issued similar edicts across the country, prompting authorities to rush to ensure factories can churn out more masks.. Even more drastic measures have been taken in Wuhan, the industrial city in central China where the new coronavirus outbreak was first detected.. It - and several neighbouring cities in Hubei province - have been almost completely sealed off, with authorities grounding flights, halting trains and banning car travel for more than 50 million people.. - We try to stay home -. Some in China have coped with the boredom of being confined to their homes through wry social media posts.. Before I even get into any discussion at all regarding litter box training or re-training, it should be noted that bengals do NOT do well as single pets in homes. We have come to the realization after sending many single kittens home with clients, that bengals often react negatively to being without other animals when they leave our busy cattery full of friends and litter mates. Bengals are highly intelligent and social animals who require constant attention and play. Humans can meet many of a bengals needs, but not all. While bengals love their humans and love spending time with them playing fetch or cuddling in front of the TV, they especially thrive on "animal play" - chasing, wrestling, biting and grooming one another - things that a human can not replicate for them. We have had some success placing single bengals in homes where the owner is always home during the day and not away at work and where a cat wheel is provided to help deter boredom and burn off pent up energy that would ...
Many marine parks subject their mammals to hunger so they will perform for their food. Jumping through hoops, tailwalking and playing ball are trained behaviors that do not occur in the wild. Confined animals who abuse themselves (banging their heads against the walls) are creating stimuli which their environment cannot supply. Dolphins in captivity tend to develop stereotypical behaviors (swimming in a repetitive circle pattern, with eyes closed and in silence) because of boredom and confinement. This is equivalent to the swaying and pacing of primates, lions, tigers and bears confined in cages.. Wont you please help us and Say NO TO CAPTIVITY. ~RESORT WORLD FREE THE DOLPHINS.~. You can get through this day without drinking. The craving will pass. Do something else - take a walk, read a book, eat something, watch stupid reality tv, take a nap, work out, anything besides drinking for the next 30 minutes. It will pass - you know this - you quit drinking for 9 months and were a much happier version of yourself. You do not need alcohol to be happy. You do not need alcohol right in this moment to be happy. It is an illusion of happiness. It might relax you, make yo less uncomfortable around others, relieve your boredom, quiet those screaming voices in your head demanding alcohol...but it will not make you happy ...
teve is a 17-year-old with a scraggly goatee, a propensity to wear Grateful Dead T- shirts and a strange medical complaint. A few months earlier, in response to symptoms of clinical depression, I had placed him on Prozac, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, known as S.S.R.I.. Although he no longer complained of sadness, poor concentration and boredom, the problems that gave occasion to his being prescribed Prozac, he was now experiencing frequent disturbances of color and occasional moments when people he was looking at transformed into cartoonlike figures.. Unfortunately, I paid too little attention to his complaint and reflexively reached for my prescription pad to switch his medication from Prozac to Zoloft, the equivalent of switching from Coke to Pepsi, hoping that a different S.S.R.I. might solve the problem. Because these episodes werent particularly distressing to Steve, we agreed to see each other within a month. But my therapeutic intervention accomplished nothing, and, again, I ...
Looking at interests among working-class teenage girls in a technological high school in Romania, I use gossip as a (possible) key for "deciphering" the boredom associated with school experience, and for "translating" social information exchange into possible success models. The informative strain of gossip, as theorized by Rosnow and Fine (1976) can be related to one of the most important functions of language as argued by cognitivists: advertising ones own advantages as a friend, ally, or mate (Dunbar et al., 1997). I suggest that gossip is not merely idle talk among women, or a way of reasserting moral values and splitting people into my group versus the others. For working-class teenage girls it is a powerful tool to build the reputation they dream about, in order to defeat the institutional and cultural forces that forge and reproduce social immobility. Furthermore, the content of their gossip reflects the sources of what they perceive as good reputations. To achieve success, people ...
December 13th, 2007 at 8:37 pm In the aesthetic sphere, people make enjoyment the center of their lives.. Such an aesthetic response is characteristic of the Net surfer for whom information gathering has become a way of life. Such a surfer is curious about everything and ready to spend every free moment visiting the latest hot spots on the Web. He or she enjoys the sheer range of possibilities. For such a person, just visiting as many sites as possible and keeping up on the cool ones is an end in itself. The qualitative distinction that staves off levelling for the aesthete is the distinction between those sites that are interesting and those that are boring, and, thanks to the Net, something interesting is always only a click away. Life consists in fighting off boredom by being a spectator at everything interesting in the universe and in communicating with everyoane else so inclined. Such a life produces what we would now call a postmodern self - a self that has no defining content or ...
Although the ornamental pepper plant has a foul taste, many cats will chew or eat it out of boredom or curiosity. If your cat consumes any part of the plant, he may begin to exhibit symptoms of poisoning, including vomiting, diarrhea, shock, and seizures. - Wag! (formerly Vetary)
Summer is like the post-coital feeling - not everyone takes to it after the lovely splash of spring and the bygone chilly days. Though the post-coital session evokes warmth and a sense of fulfilment, it cannot compare to coitus itself. Period. The sweat and the addendum to it makes it a tad difficult for me but then there are some bright spots (literally and metaphorically) to summer. The appearance of water/musk melons, pepsi-colas and other summery delights alleviate the problem of post-spring/winter melancholia partially. Summer also signals the end of the semester and examination blues. I thought after becoming a teacher, I would be free from the end-of-term low tide but looks like the end always comes with a sting of boredom, a sense of forlornness and loneliness of having to bid adieu to a set of students with whom the year was spend in wanton abandon, endless gossip, conniving moments and of course some lessons. I will miss them and that feeling makes me a bit morose ...
The personal objects left behind by the Civil War soldier are small windows which allow us to get a brief glimpse into the most momentous part of his life. When I came across an item to use in this... More , book - what we might consider today as trivial - I tried to figure out why it was so important to him. In todays "world of disposable goods", who would take the time to meticulously inscribe their name or initials in such an inanimate object as a razor or soap dish? We may think it was done to prove ownership, maybe it could identify him if killed or wounded, or maybe it was just out of boredom. Some of these scenarios might be true, but I think it was much more than that. He knew the war would be scrupulously studied by future generations. Many of these veterans carefully packed away their menial possessions as a personal time capsule, hoping that someone in the future would find them and if only for a brief moment, remember their small part in American History., Less ...
ADHD is a Real Disorder Misrepresented by a Fake Book, claims Dr. Harold Levinson. By Cheryl K. Chumley-The Washington Times Monday, January 6, 2014. "Zero: Thats the percent of children suffering from attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, " neurologist Dr. Richard Saul said in his new book, ADHD Does Not Exist: The Truth About Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder. Moreover, he claims the stimulants prescribed cavalierly are dangerous and addictive. To justify his convictions, he reports that there are many other causes of impaired concentration other than ADHD, including simple boredom as well as psychological and neurological issues. The New York Post reported controversy is already generating and the books due out in February.. According to Dr Levinson, the underlying reason for the above presented statements by Saul is simply ingenious: to sell books using the medias desire to sell itself via drama and controversy. Tragically, the readers are left confused. And thus ...
I suppose if I heard about a bunch of 14-year-old kids in rural Kansas riding around doing something like this I might understand it. Ive been to rural Kansas, and while it certainly has a certain beauty I could also imagine it breeding a certain restlessness and destructive boredom in an adolescent hungry for social and intellectual stimulation. However, its much harder to understand something like this when the participants are a bunch of adults in one of the cultural capitals of the world, who have thousands of dollars of high-end bicycle equipment, and, at least in some cases, also have expensive educations and white-collar office jobs as well as access to all the socially and intellectually stimulating pursuits those assets afford them.. Could they not think of anything better to do with their bikes or themselves? Moreover, if any of these people actually have romantic partners, what kind of exchanges did they have with theirs the next morning?. "What did you do last night, honey?". "A ...
The Metacognition and Motivation thrust has two broad goals, 1) to develop a better understanding of how metacognitive processes and motivation interact with learner factors to influence robust student learning outcomes and 2) to test whether and how student learning environments can leverage improved metacognition and motivation to increase the robustness of student learning. Our research will focus on a small number of metacognitive abilities (e.g., help seeking, self-explanation, interpreting peer feedback, and interpreting textual descriptions of domain principles), and a broader range of affective and motivational variables including: challenge perception, boredom, frustration, performance goals, and off-task behavior. The Metacognition and Motivation thrust builds on the Coordinative Learning (CL) cluster, while bringing a significant shift of focus. The M&M thrust continues some of the work in the Coordinative Learning cluster that focused on the metacognitive aspects of coordinating ...

Whats the hardest thing about exercising at home? If youre anything like me, its simple lack of motivation. Before I became a mother, I belonged to a gym. No matter how ambivalent I felt, I knew all I had to do was get myself there and the instructor would take over. Even if I was planning a weight training session, just being at the gym surrounded by other fit and sweating bodies was enough to re-energize me. At home, Im more likely to be surrounded by piles of laundry and dishes waiting to be washed. Is it the same in your house? So what can you do when the motivation slips and you begin to feel that simply getting the house in shape presents enough of a challenge? The first thing to do is figure out whats causing the problem. Burnout, boredom and failure to see results would be the most likely culprits. Although its not impossible to suffer from more than one at a time, well deal with them one by one. Burnout happens when you overdo it. You dash headlong into fitness hoping to see ...
WHAT WAS IT ABOUT THE SECOND WORLD War that moved the troops to constant verbal subversion and contempt? What was it that made the Americans, especially, so fertile with insult and cynicism, calling women Marines BAMS (broad-assed Marines) and devising SNAFU, with its offspring TARFU (Things are really fucked up), FUBAR (Fucked up beyond all recognition), and the perhaps less satisfying FUBB (Fucked up beyond belief)? It was not just the danger and fear, the boredom and uncertainty and loneliness and deprivation. It was the conviction that optimistic publicity and euphemism had rendered their experience so falsely that it would never be readily communicable. They knew that in its representation to the laity, what was happening to them was systematically sanitized and Norman Rockwellized, not to mention Disneyfied. They knew that despite the advertising and publicity, where it counted their arms and equipment were worse than the Germans. They knew that their automatic rifles (First World ...
They are very social animals and can live with other guinea pigs. Male guinea pigs should not be housed together. If aggression is noticed, you need to separate your pigs right away. You may notice them engaging in "barbering" (chewing on each others hair); this is normally not an aggressive behavior. It can be caused by many things, such as boredom, excitement, or dietary deficiencies.. When housing multiple guinea pigs, the cage needs to be large enough for food dishes, toys, and still allow room for them to move around. The cage for a single guinea pig should be at least 24inch w X 18inch h. The cage should have a wire top and sides with a solid base; wire flooring can cause irritation to their feet. Wire sides allows plenty of airflow and ventilation in the cage. Guinea pigs should be housed where there are no drafts, chills, excessive heat, or sudden temperature changes. The base of the cage should be three inches high to keep the bedding in, yet still allows the pig to see whats going on ...
Hows your summer going?". A variation of this question was posed to me three times, in quick succession, one afternoon very recently. I had not yet left for the summer and was working steadily to finish all the tasks left to do before I could begin my break.. Nursing a deep resentment for still being at work while most colleagues were on the golf course, at their cottage or otherwise relaxing, my reaction to this question each time was to launch into what tasks I still had yet to do and a litany of reasons why it was taking so long for me to complete those tasks, this year in particular.. I saw a similar glazed-over look that was a cross between boredom and disinterest in the eyes of each person as I spoke to them. If we had still been children, one of them surely would have rubbed their index finger and their thumb together in front of my face declaring it was the worlds smallest violin playing and that it was playing just for me.. If it had just been this one day, I could chalk it up to ...
If you are looking for a quick fix, a magic needle - acupuncture will disappoint you. Acupuncture by itself will do very little to help you lose weight.. Successful weight loss takes nothing short of a complete life style change including a nutrient-dense diet, nutritional supplementation, smart efficient exercise, sufficient sleep and stress reduction.. But acupuncture can address just about every one of these aspects and greatly improve the results of a multi-faceted weight loss program. Lets take a closer look at what acupuncture has to offer.. 1. Acupuncture reduces food cravings and regulates appetite. Ear acupuncture is one of the most successful methods for addiction treatment, including food addiction and emotional eating where bingeing or constant nibbling serves to stuff down difficult emotions like sadness, anger, boredom and loneliness; or where sensations like pain, fatigue and thirst are mistaken for hunger.. Ear acupuncture stimulates the vagus nerve, the longest cranial nerve ...

The goal of this paper was to present the results of a scoping review on the concept of vulnerability in connection with health care disparities. Moreover, we intended to identify what is known, in the existing literature, about the relationship between health care disparities and the co-existence of multiple aspects of vulnerability. The main finding of this scoping review is that the body of literature on vulnerability in health care research confirms the framework of our dynamic vulnerability model of health care disparities based on the ICL. Thus, the results suggest that high levels of vulnerability (due to the co-existence of multiple vulnerability aspects) would increase health care needs and would be associated to lower health care accessibility and quality. These findings are consistent with other research showing that the ICL phenomenon holds even under universal health insurance systems such as the UK and Canada, and it holds with greater force in countries without universal health ...

Purpose : Changes in eye growth that lead to myopia or hyperopia are associated with alterations in the circadian rhythms in eye length and choroidal thickness in animal models. Recent studies have shown that light at night has deleterious effects on human health via "circadian disruptions" in various physiological rhythms. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of 2-hour episodes of light at night on the rhythms in axial length and choroidal thickness, and on growth rate and refraction in the chick model. Methods : At 2 weeks of age, birds received light (700 lux) between 12:00 am and 2:00 am for 7 days (n=18; total light=14 hr). Age-matched controls had a continuous dark night (n=22; 14L/10D). Ocular dimensions were measured using high-frequency A-scan ultrasonography on the first day, and again on day 7 at 6-hr intervals for 24 hr, starting at noon. Measurements during the night used a photographic safe-light. These data were used to determine rhythm parameters of phase and ...
Numerous researchers have suggested that an aggressive behavioural style is more stable over time in boys than girls. This literature has recently been called into question by studies demonstrating that girls styles of expressing aggression may be different from boys, and that aggression may occur in different contexts for males and females across the life course. The present study explored longitudinal predictors of self-reported family violence and parenting styles in men and women with childhood histories that placed them at high-risk for various psycho-social problems. Three main questions are addressed: (a) Within a high-risk sample, to what extent can we use participants past histories of aggression and withdrawal to predict spousal and parental violence and parenting style? (b) Can we make the same predictions for both men and women? and (c) What are the developmental and current life variables that favor/hinder the development and practice of violence in the home and positive ...
A rotary encoder error compensation system for use in a marking device with a rotary encoder includes an error correction logic circuit and an error correction table linked to the error correction logic circuit. The rotary encoder is configured to generate an encoder signal indicating a detected position of a rotating element and has a known rotary encoder error. The error correction logic circuit receives the encoder signal from the rotary encoder. The error correction table includes normalized error correction values. The error correction logic circuit accesses the error correction table based on the detected position of the rotating element and the known rotary encoder error and obtains one of the normalized error correction values corresponding to the detected position of the rotating element and the known rotary encoder error.

On 2 June 1944, the ship was sealed and briefing commenced. On 5 June 1944, Threat departed Tor Bay with a minesweeping unit to take part in Operation Neptune, the assault phase of Operation Overlord. Threat helped clear the channels to be used by fire support ships in the Baie de la Seine. In the days that followed, Threat witnessed the sinking by mines of Glennon (DD-620), Tide (AM-125), and Rich (DE-695). On 8 June, while aiding the disabled USS Rich, Threat narrowly missed becoming the victim of a mine that sank the destroyer escort off Cardonet Bank.. A shore battery fired on Threat as she was running acoustic and magnetic sweeps off Cherbourg on 9 June. The doughty minesweeper returned the fire with her 3-inch gun, silencing two shore gun employments and exploding a small ammunition dump. Commander, Mine Squadron 7, later commended Threat for her performance that day and gave special praise to the smart ship-handling operations that those operations had entailed..
