Occupational stress in human computer interaction. (1/23)

There have been a variety of research approaches that have examined the stress issues related to human computer interaction including laboratory studies, cross-sectional surveys, longitudinal case studies and intervention studies. A critical review of these studies indicates that there are important physiological, biochemical, somatic and psychological indicators of stress that are related to work activities where human computer interaction occurs. Many of the stressors of human computer interaction at work are similar to those stressors that have historically been observed in other automated jobs. These include high workload, high work pressure, diminished job control, inadequate employee training to use new technology, monotonous tasks, por supervisory relations, and fear for job security. New stressors have emerged that can be tied primarily to human computer interaction. These include technology breakdowns, technology slowdowns, and electronic performance monitoring. The effects of the stress of human computer interaction in the workplace are increased physiological arousal; somatic complaints, especially of the musculoskeletal system; mood disturbances, particularly anxiety, fear and anger; and diminished quality of working life, such as reduced job satisfaction. Interventions to reduce the stress of computer technology have included improved technology implementation approaches and increased employee participation in implementation. Recommendations for ways to reduce the stress of human computer interaction at work are presented. These include proper ergonomic conditions, increased organizational support, improved job content, proper workload to decrease work pressure, and enhanced opportunities for social support. A model approach to the design of human computer interaction at work that focuses on the system "balance" is proposed.  (+info)

Effects of VDT tasks with a bright display at night on melatonin, core temperature, heart rate, and sleepiness. (2/23)

The effects of performing video display terminal (VDT) tasks with a bright display (BD) at night on nocturnal salivary melatonin concentration, rectal temperature, heart rate, and sleepiness were examined. Seven healthy male adults performed exciting VDT tasks with a BD and a dark display (DD) and boring VDT tasks with a BD and a DD from 2300 to 0200. The light intensities of the BD and DD were 45 and 15 lx at each subject's eye level, respectively. The exciting VDT task with both BD and DD significantly suppressed the nocturnal decrease in rectal temperature and heart rate and the nocturnal increase in sleepiness. The BD significantly suppressed the nocturnal decrease in rectal temperature during both exciting and boring VDT tasks. The nocturnal salivary melatonin concentration was significantly suppressed by the combination of the exciting task and BD. The results suggest that performing an exciting VDT task with a BD suppresses the nocturnal changes in melatonin concentration and other physiological indicators of human biological clocks.  (+info)

Incidence of and risk factors for nodding off at scientific sessions. (3/23)

We conducted a surreptitious, prospective, cohort study to explore how often physicians nod off during scientific meetings and to examine risk factors for nodding off. After counting the number of heads falling forward during 2 days of lectures, we calculated the incidence density curves for nodding-off episodes per lecture (NOELs) and assessed risk factors using logistic regression analysis. In this article we report our eye-opening results and suggest ways speakers can try to avoid losing their audience.  (+info)

Nodding and napping in medical lectures: an instructive systematic review. (4/23)

A comprehensive, international systematic review, spanning more than 100 years of data collection, suggests that soporific lectures at medical meetings are common, annoying and persistent. Low lights and boring material are prominent risk factors for nodding off during presentations. Extreme remedial measures are warranted.  (+info)

Behavioural reactivation and subjective assessment of the state of vigilance--application to simulated car driving. (5/23)

The frequency of some behaviour (such as self-centred gestures) increases during a task that leads to the occurrence of low-vigilance episodes. These gestures can be useful in stimulating oneself. A study carried out in 20 adults has enabled us to state that motor activity (recorded with an actimeter) increases with the duration of a monotonous driving task and sleep deprivation. The analysis of the scores recorded using the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale has shown that drivers can assess the deterioration of their state of vigilance according to the actual sleep preceding the driving test. Finally, the joint analysis of the subjective and objective data revealed a co-variation of these two types of indices. We discuss the stimulatory function of the motor activity in a task leading to the occurrence of low-vigilance episodes by investigating, among other things, the use, conscious or not, of this type of activity.  (+info)

Determinants of daily smoking in Turkish young adults in the Netherlands. (6/23)

BACKGROUND: As little is known about the determinants of smoking in large ethnic minorities in the Netherlands and other Western European countries, we studied the determinants of smoking young adult offspring of Turkish migrants to the Netherlands. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of 439 Turkish adults (18-28 y) in 2003. Smokers were compared with never smokers for five groups of determinants: demographic and socioeconomic factors, behavioral and emotional problems, psychosocial factors, and cultural factors. Associations were measured by prevalence rate ratios. RESULTS: Prevalences for men were 51% for daily smoking, 12% for former smoking, and 38% for never smoking. For women they were 44%, 11%, and 47%, respectively. Without adjustment for other determinants, higher prevalence was associated with: emotional problems, boredom, life events, and being male; and, specifically among women, with low self-esteem and having children. The strongest determinants of daily smoking In multivariate models were alcohol use and demographic and socio-economic factors. Of the cultural factors only strong Muslim identification was associated with lower smoking prevalence. CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of smoking warrants action. Many of the well-known determinants of smoking in Western countries were also important among young adults from ethnic minorities. Women with children and people of a low educational level deserve special attention.  (+info)

Increases in impulsivity following smoking abstinence are related to baseline nicotine intake and boredom susceptibility. (7/23)

Trait impulsivity and response inhibition have been shown to be related to smoking behavior. One measure of response inhibition - antisaccade performance, or the ability to inhibit looking at a novel stimulus - has been shown to be worsened by smoking abstinence, improved by nicotine administration and predictive of smoking cessation outcomes. However, relations between antisaccade performance and measures of trait impulsivity have not been extensively evaluated in smokers. In the present study, twelve dependent smokers (n=12) completed an eye tracking task following smoking as usual and overnight abstinence; and they completed baseline measures of trait impulsivity, smoking history and provided biological samples. As expected, overnight abstinence significantly increased antisaccade errors (p<0.002) while having no effect on prosaccade performance. Abstinence-induced increases in antisaccade errors were positively correlated with baseline plasma cotinine and Sensation Seeking Scale Boredom Susceptibility, and negatively correlated with IQ. These results suggest that smoking abstinence significantly increases errors of response inhibition and that the magnitude of this increase is related to trait impulsivity and nicotine intake variables.  (+info)

A comparison of three vulnerability models for the onset of substance use in a high-risk sample. (8/23)

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this prospective study was to compare the following three vulnerability models for early-onset substance use in a high-risk sample: the deviance proneness model, the negative affect regulation model, and a comprehensive model including both delinquency and negative affect. METHOD: The sample included 249 15- to 19-year-old adolescents (57% children of alcoholics) and their fathers, all of whom were seen at follow-up 5 years later. At both times of measurement, participants completed a clinical psychiatric interview and a battery of self-report questionnaires assessing temperament, negative affect, delinquency, and substance use. RESULTS: Although all of the models fit the data well, the deviance proneness model was parsimonious and provided the best fit. Delinquency played a significant mediating role, whereas negative affect did not. Moreover, negative affect and delinquency were not significantly related to one another. CONCLUSIONS: Results from this study suggest that the deviance proneness model may be a more useful theoretical framework than the negative affect regulation model or a comprehensive model when examining the onset of substance use, particularly in a high-risk sample.  (+info)

Most people try to avoid boredom. But is it good to never be bored? Dr. Mark Hawkins doesnt think so… Learn why boredom is actually healthy and valuable.
Across the Western humanities, boredom has typically been depicted as an individual failing. The 19th century German pessimist Arthur Schopenhauer defined boredom as the sensation of the emptiness of existence. French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre called it a leprosy of the soul.. But researchers studying boredom say it merits a more neutral reading. That feeling of having nothing to do - what Russian author Leo Tolstoy called the desire for desires - serves as a signal, a call to the body to shift gears, goes the current thinking.. Boredom is a sign that youre not meaningfully engaged in the world, says social psychologist Erin Westgate of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Researchers, including Westgate, have identified two paths to boredom: a loss of focus or a loss of meaning.. Certainly, many of us have lost the focus, or mental acuity, of the Before Times, Westgate says. In addition to a deadly pandemic that has brought city shutdowns and remote schooling, there have been ...
The research surveyed 2,067 adults from across Britain, and reveals that 27 percent of respondents feel they have been eating less healthily during lockdown, 50 percent of people state their habits have not changed and 22 percent say they have been eating more healthily than usual.. The survey looked at the reasons why those who say they are eating less healthily are doing so and, as well as boredom, stress and lack of motivation, 30 percent of people claim that not being able to go to the supermarket as often is making it difficult for them to eat healthily.. The research has been conducted in parallel with the launch of BNF Healthy Eating Week @ Home, a virtual event which aims to encourage people of all ages to take part in a range of key health challenges based on healthy eating, wellbeing and the benefits of physical activity, as well as trying out new healthy recipe ideas.. Analysing how our cooking and eating habits have changed since the lockdown began, the research suggests that 17 ...

Islands come and go - the ocean is. Why would I want to fill this boredom space with something to do? Is it not beautiful and perfect? It was its emptiness that scared me. On the whole a society always produces more than is necessary for its survival; it has a surplus at its disposal. It is precisely the use it makes of this surplus that determines it. So writes the rogue Surrealist Georges Bataille. This surplus may be gathered up and dispersed in spiritual quests or in making life over as a work of art. It can be squandered on bombs. Or it can be invested along the lines of strategic expansion or economic accumulation. This laying down of new lines, building from topic to topography to topology, only increases the surplus, and postpones and multiplies the problem: What to do with the idle capacities of a people? What to do with energies that so easily spill over into riot or revolt? Whats the good? Boredom is the ambivalent gift of the surplus. Boredom arises out of the absence of necessity, of a yes, a no, a straight line. Boredom demands new necessities, and if not granted them - produces its own. History is a struggle to wrest necessity from boredom. In ...
The two emotions, loneliness and boredom, are closely allied. They are also both characteristically modern. The Oxford English Dictionarys earliest citations of either word, at least in the contemporary sense, date from the 19th century ... Loneliness is not the absence of company, it is grief over that absence. The lost sheep is lonely; the shepherd is not lonely. But the Internet is as powerful a machine for the production of loneliness as television is for the manufacture of boredom. If six hours of television a day creates the aptitude for boredom, the inability to sit still, a hundred text messages a day creates the aptitude for loneliness, the inability to be by yourself. Some degree of boredom and loneliness is to be expected, especially among young people, given the way our human environment has been attenuated. But technology amplifies those tendencies. You could call your schoolmates when I was a teenager, but you couldnt call them 100 times a day. You could get together with your ...

What is boredom? To answer the question of boredom, we need to first consider what is missing in a child who repeatedly tells us they are bored. A child over the age of three should ideally show signs of wanting to do it myself with budding autonomy and independence becoming evident. They should also indicate an interest in learning about new and unknown things.. Kids who are thriving will often be able to shift into play or creative solitude when they are apart from their adults. Signs of vitality include having ones own ideas, initiative, intentions, and interests. Children should be known for their imagination and curiosity, all of which go missing when a child is characteristically bored.. According to Gordon Neufeld, the problem with kids who are bored is one of emergent energy (5). The bias that drives a child to become their own separate person or independent being is missing or subdued. The word boredom comes from the word to bore, indicating an internal void where energy should be ...

Learning how to enter into the flow has the potential to immediately improve the quality of your life and build your mind power. Csikszentmihalyi found that being in the flow actually increases your brain power, and that the longer you remain in flow, the more complex your mind power becomes.. The easiest way to understand how flow increases mind power is this: When you perform a task that is too easy, your mind wanders from your work, and you have low mental focus. When something is overwhelmingly too difficult, on the other hand, anxiety and frustration set in.. Neither boredom nor anxiety lead to good mental focus.. Most often we move in and out of flow without realizing it. Any stimulating activity that completely fills your conscious attention can put you there. But the minute you feel worry, boredom or insecurity creeping in, you are out of the flow.. Heres a reliable step-by-step method to create a state of flow in your life:. Step 1. View your task as a game. Like any serious game, ...
One of the reasons why many people turn to substance abuse in the beginning is that they feel bored. This is an emotion where people do not experience anything of interest in their surroundings. It is an uncomfortable mind frame that most people will experience from time to time. Those who experience too much boredom may complain that their life is unsatisfying. It opens the door for all sorts of negative thinking. The individual may begin to remember their years of substance abuse as a time of great excitement.. Those who give up an addiction will suddenly have plenty of time on their hands. This is because so much of the life of an addict is focused around obtaining and using their drug of choice. When these people become sober they will have huge gaps in their day with nothing to do. It is therefore vital that they find new things to do or else they risk experiencing boredom. The good news is that those who have been sober for a reasonable amount of time will often complain that they just do ...
A shadowy figure broke into my house, into my room, into my dreams. In that way dreams have of telling us whats going on I knew he was a burglar but he didnt seem interested in burgling anything. They hurt. I screamed.. The scream woke me up. I shuddered, shook my head at the horror of the nightmare and fell back into sleep - and back into the dream.. The cutting man was still there. Not a gloater, he was nothing like Hollywood Evil. Just a man with a grim task to do. His knife looked like a scalpel, blood ran from my cuts. Why was he doing this? Why didnt I fight back? If he was the thief the dream insisted he was, why didnt he just take something and go?. I woke up so quickly at my second scream the sound was still in my room. I was sweating, my heart raced. The cuts burned but I couldnt see ...
It is vital that individuals in recovery find new interests to fill up their time. These can be activities that they once enjoyed prior to becoming addicted or they can be something completely new. These new interests can provide real pleasure and give life purpose. The individual will usually be surprised that there are so many exciting choices available in recovery. They can even start to complain that there are not enough hours in the day to do all the things they want to do, and can now do once they are free from addiction.. A lack of willingness to find new interests in recovery is a bad omen. It could mean that the individual is on the path to relapse. Trying new things can be a bit intimidating, but without a willingness to do this, there is real danger of a return to old behaviors. This is why addiction therapists will spend a lot of time encouraging the client to find things to do with their time.. ...

Everyone has those Facebook friends who post almost everyday with new status updates and filtered selfies. Im not opposed to updating social media, but Im always curious about the other half of Facebook who are media silent. Could it be that those people are living busier, more adventurous lives than the people who are online more often? Or are they just finding more innovative ways to entertain themselves?. Some researchers and authors, like Graham Linehan, argue that while the internet successfully reduces boredom, the constant stream of information leaves no room for innovative or creative thinking. Linehan says, I have to use all these programs that cut off the internet, force me to be bored, because being bored is an essential part of writing, and the internet has made it very hard to be bored.. He visits youngsters in the surgery and burn units and, as part of the Reach Out and Read Program, reads to kids in the hospital waiting room.. The work, he said, keeps him active and motivated.. I come away from every shift with a smile on my face and in my heart, said Mittler, a 65-year-old Bexley resident. They minister more to me ...
Just got back from the mountains of North and South Carolina, a country of beautiful vistas, gorgeous waterfalls and (at this time of the year) bright autumn leaves. My husband and I stayed a couple of nights in Asheville, an oasis in the desert, in terms of being a bastion of progressivism in an otherwise conservative area. It also seemed to be one of the few places with a thriving economy. The rest of the region is horribly depressed right now, and I dont mean emotionally (although that may in fact be the case). Another area that seemed to be doing all right for itself was Cherokee, located in the Cherokee Indian Reservation. I only say that because my memories of Cherokee date from nearly twenty years ago when we lived in Charlotte. The only word that comes to mind when I think about the town back then is crummy. The town is still crummy, but maybe not as much as it was. Its still littered with more moccasin stores than you can shake a stick at, although we did see one old guy, dressed in ...

Due to the typical calendar year of school, and the nature of seasons, parents and children go through cycles of excitement, hope, boredom, and discouragement. However, most of these individuals are not aware that these cycles are normal and predictable. Let me be a bit more specific. At the start of the school year, most parents and children are excited for the year to begin. New clothes are bought, new teachers are met, a new binder is organized, and friends whom you have not seen for the entire summer are seen again. However, after period of time, the reality of the school year sets in. The newness wears off. Some boredom and discouragement sets in. This happens between the middle of October until the holidays. The holidays give a positive boost to many people because there are things to look forward to during the holiday break. In January, most children and parents are excited for school to begin. However, they are probably not as excited before. From the latter part of January until spring ...
Thanks to my menial day job, I spend a lot of time being bored. What I didnt know was that being bored can kill you, according to a study from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London. A longitudinal study was made of over 7,500 civil servants, ages 35-55, who were followed over 25 years. As it turns out, those who were bored more often were over 40 percent more likely to end up dead than those who werent bored.. Said Martin Shipley, one of the co-writers, The findings on heart disease show there was sufficient evidence to say there is a link with boredom. It is important that people who have dull jobs find outside interests to keep boredom at bay, rather than turn to drinking or smoking.. So, the next time youre sitting bored at work, pick up that pen and start spinning it. Better yet, start browsing through the archives of PopFi and keep yourself entertained so you dont end up dead! Its all about making your life more meaningful and ...
Veritas Vision A bit of boredom and a bit of spice marked Veritas CEO Gary Blooms opening speech here at the Veritas Vision conference.. The boredom charge may come off harsh, but the accusation is most certainly apt as Bloom spoke with massive Utility Now signs surrounding him on stage. The utility computing message is all well and good, but you have to wonder if its time hasnt passed.. For years, companies such as IBM, EMC, HP and Sun Microsystems have littered the collective mind of the IT industry with fanciful analogies comparing the delivery of processing power or storage with turning on a faucet and watching water trickle out. And here, about thirty minutes into Blooms keynote, the exec had the audacity to keep the water dream alive, walking the Veritas audience through the inner-workings of water delivery systems and all of their glory. Seriously, he did.. Given this staid performance, you might think Bloom hasnt heard the fluff charges surrounding utility computing. Not ...
It has often been said of the Civil War soldier that life consisted of moments of sheer terror followed by months of sheer boredom. For the garrisoned soldier, it tended more towards boredom. (A historical marker located in Clarksville in Montgomery County, Tennessee.)
Prisoner doctors tell of the fate of two Hungarian twins who arrived at Auschwitz late in 1943. Dr. Mengele was at the camp selection. The train arrived in the very early morning. Three sets of twins were found. They were taken to the experimental block. Dr. Mengele ordered the two Hungarian twins be placed in the examination room. The two Hungarian twins young men age 18 were described as extremely athletic and handsome. They had much body hair and were allowed to keep it for the first few weeks. The twins were showered and returned nude to the examination room. The examination started at the head . All parts of their heads were examined. The head examination took almost days. They were then completely X-rayed . The next part of the examination consisted of tubes being forced through their noses and into their lungs. They were then ventilated with a gas which caused them to cough so severely they had to be restrained. The sputum from the lungs was collected for examination ...
316 evano ~ 28 January 2006 at 10:21 PM. This may be duplicating something in one of the 311 comments before mine, but, I found this article (http://tinyurl.com/c9qwc) on the Center for Indidvidual Freedom (CFIF) site discussing freedom of speech issues regarding specialty and vanity plates. In 2002, when the article was published, the author reported, Texas has over 150 designs; Virginia more than 300. Not to be one-upped by its southern neighbor, Maryland has over 350 designs. At the Maryland MVA site, they have a listing (http://tinyurl.com/cq7jr) of all the plates you can get, with links to images of each one. There are hundreds! 25 for A, including the Annapolis Woodworkers Association, 56 for B, including the Baltimore Duckpin Bowlers Association. I only counted as far as F - 196 different plates in the first 6 letters of the alphabet. Id be hard-pressed to believe theres a state with more!. ...

Keep in mind that your patients may not admit to feelings of boredom or loneliness because they dont want to bother you, and they may believe the common misperception that hospitals are strictly for physical healing. As nurses, we recognize the importance of treating patients physical AND psychosocial needs. Including the risk for boredom in your care plan is no less important than any other psychosocial risk. Diversional activities can transform the hospital environment as well as change your patients state of mind. Make a difference by implementing an Activity Menu kit, or something similar, at your facility. Mrs. R chooses the art making and listening to music from the Activity Menu. She soon seems more positive and hopeful about her situation. She does not ring the call bell as frequently and participates more actively in her care. I have a couple of techniques to try to make the time pass. At the beginning of the workout I throw a towel over the display and ignore the time for as long as I can - I listen to the music or watch the TVs for distraction for as long as I can ignore the grind. If I find I cant ignore it anymore, I actually concentrate on the time more - Ill literally count down the seconds / minutes, usually by marking a minute and then counting footsteps or elliptical cycles or whatever. Ill figure out how many steps to a minute and then start to do the math in my head - OK, 10 minutes left, 80 steps per minute, 800 steps left, etc. Or Ill try to figure out exactly what the distance will be when I hit 30 minutes or some other calculation. Helps to distract from the time passing and since my pace is never super constant I have to keep updating it ...
While walking and hiking are certainly related activities, they are also quite different. Compared to walking on flat ground, hiking on uneven terrain increases the amount of energy your body uses by 28 percent, according to one University of Michigan study.. Hiking involves navigating varying ground slopes, and paths that go up, down and sideways. All of this requires slight shifts in the way your leg muscles work. This increases the amount of energy you use during your hike.. Because hiking is more physically demanding, it isnt without its share of risks. Its likely you will use muscles in your hips, knees and ankles you wouldnt normally use.. Hiking can help improve balance and stability, and protect you from falls. Using all those different muscles can also prevent overuse injuries, such as knee or hip pain, that comes from walking or running on level ground.. Time.com External Site, July 2017 ...
But as a friend, who is also native to Blacksburg, recently pointed out: there isnt anywhere in Blacksburg to buy underwear. An odd, yet valid point that perfectly illustrates a town, which continues to struggle balancing development with retaining the characteristics of a small college town.. Anyway, it is always nice to get away It is interesting how you can find so much more time when you are separated from the simple responsibilities of being in your own space! And, it is always nice to have someone cook for you and make coffee every morning!. Ahhhhh!. The kids also get a break from their norm with the added benefit of hugs from Grandma and ice cream every night after dinner.. I also love that my parents have never believed in subscribing to the latest and greatest in technology, so screens arent really an entertainment option. Playing Minecraft isnt even a distant thought. While we use screens some at home, I dont much agree with the idea of them and you might catch me dramatically ...
Episodes of compulsive skin picking in those suffering from Dermatillomania can be triggered by stress, anxiety, fear, or simply boredom. During moments of stress, anxiety, fear, boredom or paranoia, individuals afflicted with Dermatillomania pick at areas of the skin that they perceive to have some sort of flaw (i.e. blemishes, scabs etc.) even if there arent any imperfections that actually exist. Dermatillomania can result from an individual literally feeling uncomfortable in his/her own skin or being self-conscious about his/her skin. Dermatillomania leads to bleeding, scabbing, swelling and sometimes scarring which makes the skin look worse; this leads to more compulsive picking of the skin, thus making it a vicious cycle of self-harm. The areas that people with dermatillomania pick at most often are the face, mouth (interior), lips, back, shoulders, scalp, stomach, chest, and even fingers and toes. These regions of the body are the most easily accessible and thus receive the most abuse. ...

The old argument I can get all this on the web doesnt hold water for me much more these days. I love the feel of printed pages; the ability to scribble notes and highlight; the freedom to rip out pages and tape them to the wall. Case in point: I read most of this issue during a flight to Seattle last week.. Second, .net recently underwent a redesign of the mag itself. Bold colors, solid typography, and beautiful illustrations enhance the already compelling content. It feels the way Id expect a web design magazine to feel. Needless to say, the overall package - content and presentation - makes for an engaging read.. But above all, perhaps the biggest surprise came as I stumbled on pages 34-38 (How to redesign a website) only to find my name in print. I had completely forgotten that Jason Walsh interviewed me a few weeks ago regarding website redesigns. (Hence, the complementary copy.) Included are several quotes from our conversation.. How about where the magazine falls short? Only a few ...
Hows your summer going?. A variation of this question was posed to me three times, in quick succession, one afternoon very recently. I had not yet left for the summer and was working steadily to finish all the tasks left to do before I could begin my break.. Nursing a deep resentment for still being at work while most colleagues were on the golf course, at their cottage or otherwise relaxing, my reaction to this question each time was to launch into what tasks I still had yet to do and a litany of reasons why it was taking so long for me to complete those tasks, this year in particular.. I saw a similar glazed-over look that was a cross between boredom and disinterest in the eyes of each person as I spoke to them. If we had still been children, one of them surely would have rubbed their index finger and their thumb together in front of my face declaring it was the worlds smallest violin playing and that it was playing just for me.. If it had just been this one day, I could chalk it up to ...
CONSIDER THE SITUATION AND SETTING It is important to examine the situations in which a childs behaviors are problematic. Gifted children typically do not exhibit problems in all situations. For example, they may be seen as ADHD-like by one classroom teacher, but not by another; or they may be seen as ADHD at school, but not by the scout leader or music teacher. Close examination of the troublesome situation generally reveals other factors which are prompting the problem behaviors.. By contrast, children with ADHD typically exhibit the problem behaviors in virtually all settings including at home and at school though the extent of their problem behaviors may fluctuate significantly from setting to setting , depending largely on the structure of that situation. That is, the behaviors exist in all settings, but are more of a problem in some settings than in others.. In the classroom, a gifted childs perceived inability to stay on task is likely to be related to boredom, curriculum, mismatched ...
Nasiba has always aspired to higher education. Yet, in her home country in Central Asia, her physical disability restricts her opportunities, and limited accessible spaces pose a constant challenge. Homebound and without external stimulation, she sank into boredom and depression. When Nasiba came across the online school for social entrepreneurship, she found an outlet. The Digital Storytelling course taught her to use blogging to share her ideas and experiences. A natural writer, Nasiba created a personal blog and began exchanging stories with people across the region. With a platform to make global connections, the school brought a social element to her life. Like Nasiba, people living with disabilities routinely face institutionalized discrimination and social exclusion. Indeed, the United Nations reports that persons with disabilities make up the worlds largest and most disadvantaged minority. To confront these barriers, EF facilitates diverse capacity-building programs on the ground in ...
An optokinetic drum -also called catford drum- is a rotating instrument to test vision in which individuals are seated facing the wall of the drum. The interior surface of the drum is normally striped; thus, as the drum rotates, the subjects eyes are subject to a moving visual field while the subject remains stationary, this phenomenon is called optokinetic Nystagmus. The speed of the drum and the duration of the test may be varied. Control groups are placed in a drum without stripes or rotation. After exposure to the rotating drum, subjects are surveyed to determine their susceptibility to motion sickness. A study in which the optokinetic drum was used to test the symptoms of the sopite syndrome showed increased mood changes in response to the visual cues, though these effects were compounded by other environmental factors such as boredom and lack of activity.[1] ...
Montreal, QC, Canada. Based upon your very brief description, I suspect your cat is suffering from psychogenic alopecia, or feline trichotillomania. Many experts believe that the syndrome is related to obsessive compulsive disorder in people.. Cats with psychogenic alopecia groom themselves excessively. This leads to bald patches on the skin. The overgrooming may occur in response to stress, boredom, or mild allergic stimulation from fleas or other allergens. The bald patches most often start on the abdomen and then spread to the rear aspects of the thighs, then up the back from the base of the tail.. Any person who suspects her cat is suffering from psychogenic alopecia should see a vet to confirm the diagnosis and rule out medical causes of hair loss such as severe allergies, parasite infestation, and autoimmune disease.. Cats with psychogenic alopecia may benefit from a stable home environment and increased enrichment (this can be accomplished through training, increased activity, and altered ...

City council members were also given a tour of the police department, and were able to participate in a simulation training to gain a better understanding of what police officers experience daily; along with the type of training they receive.. The Sandy City Police Department is led by Thacker, and as of August of this year consists of 111 sworn police officers, eight animal service officers, 26 full and part-time civilian support staff and around 60 part-time school crossing guards and two part-time contract positions.. Its a good reminder of what we go through. All of our city council was surprised at the experience: if citizens understood it, theyd have a different perspective of the police, Councilman Steve Fairbanks, a former police officer for Salt Lake City, said. What you see on the television is an erroneous depiction of policemen; its boredom accentuated by minutes of terror, that you have to react as a result of good training. Thats what it takes, and we demand training of our ...
Many of us clinicians spend our lives telling patients to take lamo, lamo sas (deep breaths) as we auscultate the chest. This is a wonderful feeling when you are fresh out of medical school, but after a while you get a bit weary of this exhortation. Lucky, then, is the young physician who early on realises that some medical research activity may rescue him from boredom. Ashish Lohani (pic, right) conducted a cough research almost three years ago at the Everest Base Camp in the Khumbu and is one of those fortunate physicians involved in research.. Amazingly, cough in the mountains is the single most common medical problem that trekkers and mountaineers face. Year after year for almost 10 years, reports from the Everest Base Camp Clinic reveal that hacking persistent cough is very common in climbers. And despite the fact that this problem is rampant, not much is known about the mechanism and cause of this Khumbu cough. It seems that the higher you go the more you are likely to have persistent, ...
It is a truly exciting moment when having taken early retirement, the initial feeling of joy and permanent holiday has passed on and thoughts suddenly come to what can I do now to fill the day. No need for boredom in my house. I have waited all these years to start making things. I have started slowly and gently, no need to go like a bull in a china shop after all - having worked for over 45 years, another few weeks of prepping wont be a problem.. There are several craft, hobby and habidashery stores opened in my area of late. This is indeed an inspiration and really thrilling. In a day and age when everything is easily replaced and thus disposable, it is fabulous to get back to basics and try to replicate the skill and dedication my own grandmother exerted whenever she took up her trusty needles, crochet hook or did battle with her Frister & Rossman sewing machine!. ...
Cough Syrup predates Young the Giant, when the band was known as The Jakes. The song appeared on the bands 2008 Shake My Hand EP, received regular airplay on KROQs Locals Only radio program, and won a Best Song nomination at the 2009 OC Music Awards.[3][4]. Lead vocalist Sameer Gadhia explained that Cough Syrup was written at a time when the band was unsigned, had no money and didnt really know what to do with [themselves]. The group, he continued, felt somewhat oppressed by the universal expectation of what to do in Orange County...in suburbia in general. I think we really yearned to break out of that and do something a little bit different. Gadhia said the song is kind of a cry for help to break free, not necessarily from oppression, but the common symptoms of suburbia like boredom, normality and homogeneity. Bassist Payam Doostzadeh, in a 2011 interview, said that with Cough Syrup being the oldest song in Young the Giants catalog, its kind of hard for us to play it. ...
The worst cases of separation anxiety present an unlivable disaster for the pet owner. The animal becomes destructive, soils the house, and vocalizes loudly and unabashedly. Its important to be able to tell separation anxiety vs boredom, read for ways to diagnose separation anxiety and how to treat it.
Exercise will be necessary to help you burn extra calories and fat, and it will tone up your muscles so that you will look fantastic once the pounds start coming off. It is very important to find activities that you enjoy. If you hate running, you arent going to be motivated to do it. Try a new class at the gym, take a walk through a different neighborhood, or buy a new exercise DVD. Change your routine frequently to challenge different muscles and stave off boredom. Even when you dont feel like getting up and moving, do it anyway. Exercise releases endorphins which will relieve stress and make you feel happier. Be careful not to overdo it, though, as training too hard can damage your body which will then slow your progress.. ...

We see the use of pharmakeia in passages like Gal. 5:20 where one of the works of the flesh (acts of the sinful nature) is witchcraft or sorcery (depending on the translation). Drugs were part of witchcraft. Pharmakeia was only part of sorcery, it literally means the act of administering drugs. [20]. In the context of Galatians, pharmakeia refers to sinful activity. It is the practice of witchcraft, involving drug abuse. It is the non-medical use of drugs that is one of the acts of the sinful nature. We must get this clear. People may say the reasons they use drugs are: boredom, to get kicks, or to escape, but the ultimate motive lying behind all other seeming motives is a self-satisfaction of the inner, depraved desires. This reveals that a drug experience is essentially selfish because it directs one entirely into oneself.. Galatians 5: 17 makes it clear that drug abuse is being in total opposition to the work of the Holy Spirit, For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the ...
Another one of the main reasons as to why people lack the energy and motivation to work out on a daily basis is because they find it a boring and horrible way to spend their time. Many people just dont like to do certain physical activities because they are boring, and they would much rather be doing something else. The elliptical machine, the treadmill, and the stationary bike can all be very boring, and not to mention lifting weights, that can be a downright nightmare for some.. The trick to getting over this boredom and the hate of certain exercises is to preoccupy yourself when doing them. Its a great idea to listen to your favourite music or even watch some television as you exercise, and thats something that you can do at home or at the gym too. Another really great way to make your workout a little less boring and painful is by finding a good workout buddy. Working out alone is never fun, and having somebody with you is very motivating to do more, not to mention that you have someone ...
The use of illegal drugs affects all of us. Newspaper articles, radio shows, debates in parliament and our own experience repeatedly tell us that street drugs are a serious problem. Still, we might try drugs out of curiosity, because of peer pressure, to combat boredom, or because it seems cool.

The unique literary structure is apparent in the first chapter that has the narrator pointing out that a self-help book is an oxymoron because you wouldnt be reading a how-to get rich book if you knew how to get rich. This is followed by musings on the circuitous nature regarding the self-help, self-improvement, and religious genres and right in the middle of the paragraph the protagonist is introduced as being so sick he could die. The next sentence suddenly shifts to conjure images of Western goods found in most American households: chocolate, sneakers, remotes, scooters before switching to make clear that this a poor boy in Asia has hepatitis E, a deadly virus transmitted by ...fecal-oral. Yum. The parents cant take him to the doctor and it is unclear if he will live. The narrator then shifts to the mothers thoughts and fathers thoughts in humorous observations on life. The mothers boredom of doing the same job over and over captures a universal truth: But done for hours and days and ...
The revolt hovering in the air reveals immense dissatisfaction with the forms of existence offered by capitalism, whether in their more sophisticated and alluring variations or in the others, more prosaic and familiar, evidenced by precariousness, mass unemployment and poverty, by boredom, suffering and oppression. We recognize in the revolt a possibility which encompasses a range of possibilities: separation, secession, subtraction from that mode of production and that governance; development in common of new forms of life on the basis of cooperation and sharing; formation of a power, a material force, a war machine capable of reclaiming spaces, instruments, bodies and knowledge from the Empire, by letting our desires trace a line of flight. Far from hiding our weaknesses and limitations, we are well aware of them and know too well that much remains to be done, that it is already late and yet still too early, that there are many things to learn and many more to invent. This is not a program, a ...

As Charlie Palillo once said a long time ago after the Rockets blew a 20-point 4th quarter lead in the playoffs: Well have to dig deep into the adjective drawer tonight. Fortunately, theres not enough time tonight to go through all the possibilities.. Dynamo games have always been, in a certain way, a drama. Whether the team wins or loses, Robertson Stadium fans are usually emotionally engaged and leave the stadium either ecstatic, depressed, or feeling lucky. By the end of the game tonight, however, the Dynamo were so bad they became not drama, but comedy.. The endless string of misplayed passes. The inopportune trapping with feet of clay. The narcoleptic defense, appearing to need a siesta after a two-martini lunch. The launching of 30-yard passes directly at the head of Revolution defenders. The apparent team boredom at actually trying to win headers. The countless offsides.. And the finishing-oh, the finishing. When Stuart Holden missed his penalty in the 80thish minute, it seemed to ...
Miriams next chapter is on morning sickness and emotions. This covers a myriad of topics, most of which are helpful. However, there was one section in here which was so funny (unintentionally, Im afraid) that I have to mention it. It is called boredom and morning sickness - a list of things to do when one is kept at home by morning sickness - things such as make beaded barrettes or belts with a kit, writing a childs storybook for the babys third or fourth birthday, complete with pictures, Knitting or embroidering, Organizing a photo album, etc. What on earth??? If, like I was, you are in bed with morning sickness, you are in NO condition to even think about activities! That is just about as practical as giving a list of things to do when youre home with severe food poisoning. When I was at home in bed, I was either throwing up or sleeping. Period. Origami never crossed my mind. If youre feeling well enough to do these things, I dont think you need to be in bed!! Of course, ...
They are also very emotionally sensitive. White cockatoos and african greys are at the top of the list of birds with a tendency to pluck feathers (especially bad cases, at least among toos, can even self-mutilate and chew up their own skin and flesh), macaws second place. They dont do well with change, boredom, unstable routines or -household, and there are many other reasons birds may pluck. But there is also the question of individual personality there, and how the bird was raised. In short: Parent-raised birds (and ironically, wild-caught ones) do better in captivity than hand-raised ones. Their development gets stunted easily if theyre hand-raised, in a way most other animals arent, since we humans dont know how to raise them in their way, and commercial hand-feeding often means the baby is weaned many months too early ...
As usual, circus owner Mr. Boomschimdt has problems. Oh, not just the usual circus problems of trying to find enough food for elephants and rhinos, and convincing your rather vain lion to skip the elaborate hair styling and ribbons for a bit, but new problems. First, his newly acquired Martians are bored. Very bored. Second, one of the Martians has vanished, and although thats somewhat helping with the boredom problem, he now has not only bored Martians to deal with, but worried bored Martians. It can be a dangerous combination for any circus.. X-Files fans will of course know one way to keep aliens entertained: Have them join a baseball team. By mostly sheer coincidence (maybe; while reading this I wondered if the X-Files writers had ever read this book), Freddy comes up with the same idea.. My only love sprung from my only hate..... William Shakespeare - Romeo and Juliet. The flight deck was austere and silent. Vila reclined languorously on the flight couch, fast asleep after a bout with some adrenaline and soma. Cally meditated at her position, eyelids half-closed. Dayna brooded in silence, flicking a switch or two at her console just to relieve the interminable boredom. Tarrant paced back and forth between Zens blank countenance and the flight couch. The only sound was Vila increasingly sonorous snoring.. The Liberators course was set for the eighth sector, where a good deal of nothing lay. For three eternal days, hardly anyone spoke, and for three eternal days, Avon had taken leave of all his functions aboard the Liberator and secluded himself in his cabin. It was only three long days ago that he had gunned down his lover whom hed thought long dead. The whole ship seemed to have taken on mourning and the attitude of a wake. Even Orac was silent.. Tarrant abruptly ceased ...

Guinea pigs are generally hardy, healthy animals but are susceptible to certain diseases. They cannot make their own vitamin C and require supplementation or they may develop scurvy. Guinea pigs get various tumors, particularly skin and mammary tumors. Guinea pigs also get abscesses (accumulations of pus and bacteria) in lymph nodes, skin, muscles, teeth, bones, and internal organs. They are very prone to development of urinary calculi that form in the bladder, kidneys, or ureters which may become lodged, causing a life-threatening obstruction. In addition, guinea pigs often are affected by ringworm and can get fleas and lice. Barbering is a problem, usually associated with boredom, in which the guinea pig chews or barbers its own hair or the hair of its cage-mate. Pododermatitis, or bumblefoot, in which sores develop on the bottom of the feet from pressure, is common in overweight animals housed on wire-bottomed or dirty cages that abrade the feet.. The halfway houses or the sober houses are recovery homes for people who are newly recovered addicts and are trying to normalize themselves by reintegrating into the society. They are made to live a clean and a sober life and are accountable for their self, while they live here. Various studies have found out that the addicts who are in the recovering stages, living in halfway houses are at a lower risk of relapse, as compared to the others who are not. The ones who tend to merge with the society immediately, cannot benefit much in life, as their benefits would increase while living in the halfway houses.. The halfway houses are not entirely free, or are not exactly cheap, but are expensive in some cases. But expecting a free halfway house is not possible. The sole purpose of a halfway house to make sure that people who need support and help, get it so that they can easily transition into a better life, a life of productivity, minus the substances. They should become not only healthy and wise ...
EMG signal based research is ongoing for the development of simple, robust, user friendly, efficient interfacing devices/systems for the disabled. The advancement can be observed in the area of robotic devices, prosthesis limb, exoskeleton, wearable computer, I/O for virtual reality games and physical exercise equipments. Additionally, electromyography (EMG) signals can also be applied in the field of human computer interaction (HCI) system. This paper represents the detection of different predefined hand motions (left, right, up and down) using artificial neural network (ANN). A backpropagation (BP) network with Levenberg-Marquardt training algorithm has been utilized for the classification of EMG signals. The conventional and most effective time and timefrequency based feature set is utilized for the training of neural network. The obtained results show that the designed network is able to recognize hand movements with satisfied classification efficiency in average of 88.4%. Furthermore, when ...

We address the estimation of human poses from a single view point in images and sequences. This is an important problem with a range of applications in human computer interaction, security and surveillance monitoring, image understanding, and motion capture. In this work we develop methods that make use of single view cameras, stereo, and range sensors.; First, we develop a 2D limb tracking scheme in color images using skin color and edge information. Multiple 2D limb models are used to enhance tracking of the underlying 3D structure. This includes models for lateral forearm views (waving) as well as for pointing gestures.; In our color image pose tracking framework, we find candidate 2D articulated model configurations by searching for locally optimal configurations under a weak but computationally manageable fitness function. By parameterizing 2D poses by their joint locations organized in a tree structure, candidates can be efficiently and exhaustively localized in a bottom-up manner. We then ...
There are two reasons for this obscurity: First, halfway houses are generally privately operated and dont report data the way world facilities are required to; second, the term halfway house is widely used to refer to vastly different types of facilities. Obesity is associated with functional impairment, institutionalization, and increased mortality risk in elders. Dynapenia is defined as reduced muscle strength and is a known independent predictor of adverse events and disability. The synergy between dynapenia and obesity leads to worse outcomes than either independently. We identified the impact of dynapenic obesity in a cohort at risk for and with knee osteoarthritis on function. We identified adults aged ≥ 60 years from the Osteoarthritis Initiative. Obesity was defined as a body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2. Dynapenia was classified using the lowest sex-specific tertile of knee extensor strength. Participants were grouped according to obesity and knee strength: dynapenic obesity; dynapenia without obesity; obesity without dynapenia; and no dynapenia nor obesity. Four-year data was available. Self-reported activities of daily living (ADL) were assessed at follow-up. Outcomes of gait speed, 400 m walk distance, Late-life Disability and Function Index
Results Those selected to be offered an accelerometer were older, more likely to be retired and to have a limiting longstanding illness than participants not in the accelerometry subsample. Seven-day accelerometer wearers were older (OR 1.02, 95% CI 1.02 to1.03) though less likely to be retired (0.77, 0.62 to 0.97) or otherwise economically inactive (0.62, 0.49 to 0.78) or live in a deprived area (0.78, 0.62 to 0.96), and more likely to be ex- (1.42, 1.14 to 1.78) or never-smokers (1.37, 1.13 to 1.67), and to have been moderately physically active in the past month (1.45, 1.20 to 1.75) or met the physical activity recommendations (1.45, 1.17 to 1.79). Four- to seven-day wearers were also older (1.01, 1.01 to 1.02), less likely to be retired (0.77, 0.62 to 0.95) or otherwise economically inactive (0.60, 0.50 to 0.73), but were more likely to have a limiting longstanding illness; differences in self-reported activity were less marked.. ...
Biofeedback sound: Jean-Baptiste Barrière. Brain Factory is an art installation that allows the audience to give a shape to human abstractions through Brain Computer Interaction (BCI), and then to convert the resulting form into a physical object. The work examines the human specificity through abstract constructs such as CREATIVITY, COGNITION, and EMOTION. The project articulates the relationship between thought and matter, concept and object, humans and machine.. Brain Factory uses Electroencephalography (EEG) data captured by BCI. As a brain activity is unique, we developed a novel calibration process of the individual data readings and associated emotional responses within a framework of binary outcomes. This is key for a real-time feedback - a biofeedback - between the virtual generative processes and the brains associated response. The calibrated communication between machine and human enables the reification, materialisation and the sublimation (conversion of matter into data) of ...
Epidemiological observations (1,2), as well as in vitro and interventional studies (3-5) suggest that lutein may play a role in AMD. A recent study, the Lutein Antioxidant Supplement Trial or LAST, evaluated the effects of lutein and lutein combined with antioxidants on atrophic AMD. Results from the trial were reported at the meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) in May, 2002 (6). Methods: This study enrolled 90 veterans with atrophic AMD in a prospective, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial that involved repeated visual measures over a 12 month period. Volunteers received 10 mg of lutein alone, 10 mg of lutein along with antioxidants*, or a placebo. The LAST study used a clinical evaluation protocol that was previously validated in a pilot case series. Several tests were used to detect and follow the disease in a serial manner. One, the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) assessment measures the least amount of contrast needed to detect a visual ...
