PAPER PRESERVATION--NEW HOPE FOR SURVIVAL. (1/4)

Crumbling paper in books and documents issued after 1860 was impossible to rehabilitate until recently. The W. J. Barrow Laboratory for several years has made exhaustive tests which show that deacidification offers a new means of ensuring survival of important texts and documents. Books now must be taken apart for the process, but spray deacidification may provide a less expensive treatment in the future. Librarians should be alert to the various methods developed in the Barrow Laboratory and should coordinate rehabilitation programs.  (+info)

Topics in library technology: binding techniques. (2/4)

The purpose of the library binding industry is to help the librarian maintain a valuable inventory of printed material for maximum use now and in the future. Standardization of approved materials and methods in the industry have encouraged manufacturers to develop materials and machinery for its use, and these, in turn, have enabled it to meet the increasing and changing needs of libraries with a uniform product of high quality and an economical and constantly improving service. The librarian, as custodian of the library's materials, must be the originator of the binding program and is the only one who knows the end use of each item, which is usually the factor that determines the selection of the most suitable binding.  (+info)

Preparation of a Mastership thesis. (3/4)

A detailed account is given of the mechanics of converting the manuscript results from a period of research into a thesis that is also a first-class, readable book.  (+info)

Effects of binding policy and other factors on the availability of journal issues. (4/4)

Random samples of journal issues, derived from a test set of 106 biomedical journal titles, were checked against the shelves of the Woodward Biomedical Library under circulating and noncirculating conditions. As well as circulation, binding procedures and duplication of sets were seen to affect availability. Indications are that the practice of binding journals upon completion of the volume may remove them from use at a time of peak demand. The usefulness of second sets of journals appeared to decline rapidly within a few years after publication. A change from circulating to noncirculating conditions may have increased availability certain journals by discouraging use.  (+info)

Ive always loved books, as far back as I can remember. Even though the shock of my parents death ended my childhood early, and left me with only fragments and dreams of my pre-teen years, I do remember reading, reading, reading. Books were part of my life, too much so for my parents, who were intelligent but uneducated, and who wondered about my fascination with almost anything written. Often I was told to put down the book and go outside to play, or turn out the light and go to sleep. Even the black & white television given to me at Christmas when I was 8 (the year my sister was born . . . I suspect my parents splurged to offset my disquiet at having a sibling at last) couldnt take the place of the books I constantly checked out of the library.. I got lost in science fiction as a youth, first as a feast for my imagination, later as an escape from the harsh realities of my world. All through high school, where the demands my teachers made on my time and intellect were modest enough to be met ...

The current interest of investigators and clinicians in hypertension-related organ damage is well witnessed by a substantial number of papers devoted to this research area in the current issue of the journal.. In an unselected population cohort (the Finn-Home Study), Hänninen et al. (pp. 1136-1143) have found that signs of organ damage (electrocardiographic voltages, carotid intima-media thickness, pulse wave velocity) had significantly higher values in masked and sustained hypertension than in normotension, with white-coat hypertensive patients showing intermediate values. In another community sample from a different part of the world (South Africa), Booysen et al. (pp. 1124-1130) also found that among individuals with normal or high normal blood pressure those with or without organ damage (assessed by pulse wave velocity, estimated glomerular filtration rate, left ventricular mass) had similar clinic blood pressures, but different calculated aortic SBP. In an editorial commentary, Perlini and ...

This paper analyses a large public investment in a construction of a hydropower plant in Lesotho and its implications on the growth and debt sustainability. The paper employs an open economy dynamic general equilibrium model to assess the benefits of a large public investment through growth-enhancing increase in domestic energy supply and receipts from selling electricity abroad to ease the fiscal burden, which is often associated with big investment projects. During the transition (construction stage), various financing options are explored: increase in the public debt, increase in domestic revenue (fiscal adjustment), and combination. The calibration matches Lesothos data and it captures the projects main challenges regarding the project costs. Moreover, the key remaining issue is the agreement with South Africa to purchase sufficient amount of electricity to allow the potential plant to run at a high capacity. We find that, the project can lead to sizable macroeconomic benefits as long as ...
This paper discusses key findings of the 2004 Status Report on Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) for Niger. The report assesses economic and financial performance, as well as progress in implementing sectoral policies and strategies in 2004. Analysis of the economic and financial situation in 2004 confirms the vulnerability of Nigers economy to the vagaries of the weather, as reflected in a fluctuating rate of economic growth. The growth rate in 2004 was -0.6 percent, versus 3.8 percent in 2003, owing to a drop in agricultural output ...
