PAPER PRESERVATION--NEW HOPE FOR SURVIVAL. (1/4)

Crumbling paper in books and documents issued after 1860 was impossible to rehabilitate until recently. The W. J. Barrow Laboratory for several years has made exhaustive tests which show that deacidification offers a new means of ensuring survival of important texts and documents. Books now must be taken apart for the process, but spray deacidification may provide a less expensive treatment in the future. Librarians should be alert to the various methods developed in the Barrow Laboratory and should coordinate rehabilitation programs.  (+info)

Topics in library technology: binding techniques. (2/4)

The purpose of the library binding industry is to help the librarian maintain a valuable inventory of printed material for maximum use now and in the future. Standardization of approved materials and methods in the industry have encouraged manufacturers to develop materials and machinery for its use, and these, in turn, have enabled it to meet the increasing and changing needs of libraries with a uniform product of high quality and an economical and constantly improving service. The librarian, as custodian of the library's materials, must be the originator of the binding program and is the only one who knows the end use of each item, which is usually the factor that determines the selection of the most suitable binding.  (+info)

Preparation of a Mastership thesis. (3/4)

Effects of binding policy and other factors on the availability of journal issues. (4/4)

Random samples of journal issues, derived from a test set of 106 biomedical journal titles, were checked against the shelves of the Woodward Biomedical Library under circulating and noncirculating conditions. As well as circulation, binding procedures and duplication of sets were seen to affect availability. Indications are that the practice of binding journals upon completion of the volume may remove them from use at a time of peak demand. The usefulness of second sets of journals appeared to decline rapidly within a few years after publication. A change from circulating to noncirculating conditions may have increased availability certain journals by discouraging use.  (+info)

The current interest of investigators and clinicians in hypertension-related organ damage is well witnessed by a substantial number of papers devoted to this research area in the current issue of the journal.. In an unselected population cohort (the Finn-Home Study), Hänninen et al. (pp. 1136-1143) have found that signs of organ damage (electrocardiographic voltages, carotid intima-media thickness, pulse wave velocity) had significantly higher values in masked and sustained hypertension than in normotension, with white-coat hypertensive patients showing intermediate values. In another community sample from a different part of the world (South Africa), Booysen et al. (pp. 1124-1130) also found that among individuals with normal or high normal blood pressure those with or without organ damage (assessed by pulse wave velocity, estimated glomerular filtration rate, left ventricular mass) had similar clinic blood pressures, but different calculated aortic SBP. In an editorial commentary, Perlini and ...

The beginning was humble, to say the least: The people at Flash Reproductions told the people at Up Inc about a cool new bookbinding technique. Not too bad a pause this time, I suppose.. Been doing . . . not a lot. Apparently a lot of my productivity the past couple-few years has been trying to keep my internal monologue quiet. And now that Im on meds (anti-depressants) that are keeping the monologue under control, I dont feel the drive to knit/do leatherworking/printing/bookbinding to keep it quiet.. To be clear, the internal monologue is not "voices in the head" kind of thing, its more like a self-narration, occasionally a conversation with myself, that I assume most people have. Its been running all my life, but most of the time it was only occasional. But at some point it got . . . more and more so. And it got to the point where sometimes it Would. Not. Shut. Up. But because it has always been there, and got worse slowly, I didnt realize how noisy it had gotten. But now I have quiet in my head when I want it and thats really nice.. So, I havent been doing much to speak of. I got some new yarn and knitting patterns after ...

Recently, Knowles and Templeton exchanged vitriolic attacks in the pages of the journal Evolution (Knowles 2008; Templeton 2009). Earlier, Knowles and Maddison (2002; maybe someone can tell me why the article, pp. 2623-2635, is missing from the online journal issue here) published a simulation study sharply critical of the method in Molecular Ecology, and Templeton (2004) responded in kind. Criticized shortcomings of the method include an exceedingly high type I error rate in simulation studies (estimated to be ~20% by Templeton 2008, but as high as 75% in other analyses), and subjectivity in the agglomeration of nested clades and in the application of the methods inference key. Other detailed critiques of NCPA can be found in Beaumont and Panchal (2008) and in Nielsen and Beaumont (2009) (the latter even includes a fascinating discussion of the Forer effect as it might pertain to this method).. How do the readers of this blog perceive the current standing of NCPA? Furthermore, but on a much ...

Magazine: New Age Journal Issue: November/December 1994 Title: Woman to Woman Author: Elaine Appleton At her innovative health center, where alternative medicine and the wisdom of the body are honored, Christiane Northrup, M.D., is launching a revolution in womens health care. Susan, a forty-two-year-old occupational therapist, was diagnosed with endometriosis when she was just thirteen years old, practically as soon as she began menstruating. "From day one," she says, "my menstrual cycle was very painful." She experienced so much cramping that her doctors told her--even at that young age--that she would eventually have a hysterectomy. "They made me feel I had this incredibly defective body," she recalls today, "this incredibly handicapping disease." Throughout her early teens and into adulthood, Susan continued to be plagued by her condition, in which the tissue that forms the lining of the uterus grows in other areas of the pelvis. By the time Susan turned thirty- nine, she was living with ...

I want to make a spin coater using a highly UNMODIFIED cd or dvd rom. Meaning I want to keep the laser mechanisms in place, and try to keep all the moving parts as free from nasty buildup and grime. The electronics will have to be replaced or bypassed, for sure. The couple times Ive seen spin coaters used, the dispensing didnt seem critical (i.e. scoop polymer onto disc during spin up) and the rotation seemed to even everything out. Does your protocol require baking the result, if so, better add some heat to the device right? References: Spin-Coating of Polystyrene Thin Films as an Advanced Undergraduate Experiment http://www.jce.divched.org/Journal/Issues/2003/Jul/abs806.html Abstract A simpler version of the well-established technique of spin-coating thin polymer films on glass slides is described. Washington, DC - A special supplemental issue to the journal Addiction was released today focusing on menthol flavored cigarettes ("menthols") and the significant harm associated with them. This Menthol Special Journal Issue, funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), includes 11 new studies focusing on the prevalence of menthol flavored cigarette use, cessation success rates among menthol cigarette users and factors that might influence smoking and quitting menthols. Key findings from the special supplement include data confirming disproportionately higher rates of menthol cigarette smoking among African Americans and young adults; and menthol smokers, particularly African Americans, are also less successful when they try to quit. Young adult non-daily smokers who smoke menthols demonstrate greater signs of nicotine dependence than those who smoke non-menthols.. This special ...

The books creator, Michael Hawley of MIT, challenged Acme Bookbinding of Charlestown, Mass, the worlds oldest book bindery. "Every page in this book is a masterpiece," notes Paul Parisi, president of Acme. "We built the permanent binding it deserves." Acme invented a hand-built binding that combines the strengths of Western-style stitched books with Asian-style fanfolding.. The book features 112 pages of spectacular images and showcases the variety of digital, photographic and printing techniques that Hawley used. Copies are printed on-demand (imagine warehousing a print run!) using a roll of paper longer than a football field and more than a gallon of ink. It takes a full twenty-four hours to print.. Copies may be bought for a mere $30,000. Stick a mast on it and you can raft your way around the world, just like Thor Heyerdahl, Kon-Tiki-style.. ...
Beka Wilmes Cotton Cotton has been grown, harvested, ginned, spun and woven by hand for thousands of years. During the Industrial Revolution Eli Whitney patented the first waster-powered cotton gin. This revolutionary new machine allowed daily output to increase by over 5,ooo%. Wash and wear finish for a cotton fabric is necessary to make it crease-free or wrinkle-free. In a similar way, mercerising, singeing, flame retardant, water repellent, waterproof, and anti-static finishing achieve various fabric properties desired by consumers. Finished Product Cotton fabrics consist mainly of terry cloth (towels and robes), denim (jeans), cambric (work uniforms), corduroy, seersucker, and cotton twill (commonly used in the place of denim). Non-textile items include fishing nets, coffee filters, paper, and bookbinding. Caring for your cotton is important, yet simple. Machine-wash and dry apparel; steam- or dry-clean - with caution - furnishings. In todays world, we use cotton more the any other fiber. ...

These virtual exhibits, teaching resources, and digital maps offer teachers a valuable resource on the history of Scotland and Great Britain, although many of the materials offer insight beyond the history and borders of Scotland. The 15 exhibits are varied. Some links explore the history of Scotland through maps or profiles of famous Scottish writers (Burns, Stevenson, and a photographic exhibit of contemporary writers such as JK Rowlings). There are several histories of the book and bookbinding in Scotland, special exhibits on key events and people in the history of Scotland (Mary Queen of Scots, Churchill, and World War I), and an exhibit on the history of photography.. These digitized collections are well organized and easy to use. Several are specifically designed with the classroom teacher in mind. "Experiences of War" and "Churchill" come complete with teaching materials and activity sheets (designed for the British curriculum, but easily adaptable to fit any American curriculum). ...
In order that library materials may be organized for effective use, donations will be added to the general collection or, if applicable, to the Prince Edward Island collection. It is rarely practicable to maintain gifts as separate collections.. Popular works, either books or journals, are accepted as donations for leisure reading on a limited basis and as space allows. Such journal titles are neither catalogued nor bound, and they are not kept for longer than one year.. Tax Receipts. A tax receipt for in-kind gifts will only be provided if one is requested before or at the time of the delivery of the materials, and only if the materials are accompanied with an itemized list of the materials, including ISBN for materials that have one (books, some multimedia) and specific volume/issue/date information for journal issues.. Tax receipts will not be issued for donations with a total value under $100 for used materials, or under $25 for new materials.. In keeping with Revenue Canada stipulations, ...
The very nature of humanistic study and of the profession which conducts it has been the focus of much recent debate around the "crisis" in academia. This debate is by no means new. The turn into the new millennium sparked the conversation about knowledge production in the humanities into a firestorm of conferences, talks, presentations, articles, chapters and special journal issues by many humanities scholars seeking to define not only the question of what humanists do in the university, but also matters of professionalism, or how we produce and value our work. The debate constellates among a variety of needs but many of these are the same practical concerns that directly affect #alt-ac scholars in our current, shaky economy, namely: decreased enrollment in humanistic studies; limited opportunities for publishing and therefore promotion; and, finally, a glut of PhDs in a time of decreased numbers of faculty positions.. Two significant critiques are pertinent to discussion of humanistic study in ...

Breaking Through the Economic Barriers of Anesthesia Information Management Systems Anesthesia information management systems (AIMS) are being increasingly used to assist the delivery and documentation of anesthesia services. The major benefits of AIMS: to (1) reduce costs, (2) facilitate quality assurance and quality improvement processes, (3) increase the accuracy and completeness of the anesthesia record, and (4) improve adherence to recommended guidelines. The major drawback is cost. This article identifies 2 of the main elements of AIMS that exist in IT and data systems already present in a hospital. This project showed that it is possible to achieve 2 of the major benefits of an AIMS without the cost of purchasing one. ...
A team of researchers affiliated with several institutions in Japan has developed a way to create catenanes and a molecular trefoil knot out of para-connected benzene rings. In their paper published in the journal Science, the group describes their process and possible uses of their results. Jeff Van Raden, and Ramesh Jasti with the University of Oregon, have published a Perspective piece on the work done by the team in the same journal issue. In recent years, carbon-based materials such as graphene, fullerenes and carbon nanotubes have captured the imagination of scientists-such materials have a wide range of unique physical properties that make them useful for certain applications. Graphene, for example, is a zero-gap semiconductor. Scientists have also been looking at ways in which such structures can be formed. In this new effort, the researchers have found a way to get benzene rings to form into two kinds of catenanes, and also a trefoil knot. Catenanes are a type of molecular architecture ...

Not surprisingly researchers and their institutions commonly collaborate on press releases to promote news coverage of new medical studies, and many journals issue press releases independently.4 Press releases increase the odds that a study will receive news coverage5 and influence the content of eventual press coverage.6 Alarmingly, in the guise of original reporting, many press releases issued by academic institutions appear verbatim on newspapers and websites with nothing to notify readers that the text is nothing more than a press release.. Perhaps this would not be alarming if academic press releases reliably described research with appropriate circumspection and in terms easily comprehensible to lay readers. However, press releases commonly exaggerate the implications of study findings and offer quantitative information in formats that are prone to misinterpretation (eg, relative rather than absolute differences in treatment effects) without warning about study limitations.4 Thus, both the ...

Introduction. Critically discuss the adequacy of Humes constant conjunction thesis as an analysis of cause and effect. David Hume was an empiricist because he believed that nearly all our knowledge derives from experience. (Except for what he calls relations of ideas, such as the truths of geometry and arithmetic but has little to say about them) Hume does not only argue that our ideas derive from impressions i.e. sensory and emotional experiences but that the connections we make between ideas also derive from experience. Principally the most important principle of connexion between ideas is the notion of cause and effect. He believed that our knowledge of cause and effect is entirely derived from sense experience. Furthermore when we know that something is closely linked to something else. Humes constant conjunction thesis is the view that one event follows another. In other words, A is always followed by B. Hume gives the example that when you eat bread you know that it will be followed ...
