Seizures that occur during a febrile episode. It is a common condition, affecting 2-5% of children aged 3 months to five years. An autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance has been identified in some families. The majority are simple febrile seizures (generally defined as generalized onset, single seizures with a duration of less than 30 minutes). Complex febrile seizures are characterized by focal onset, duration greater than 30 minutes, and/or more than one seizure in a 24 hour period. The likelihood of developing epilepsy (i.e., a nonfebrile seizure disorder) following simple febrile seizures is low. Complex febrile seizures are associated with a moderately increased incidence of epilepsy. (From Menkes, Textbook of Child Neurology, 5th ed, p784)

PatientsLikeMe: Consumer health vocabulary as a folksonomy. (1/75)

PatientsLikeMe is an online social networking community. Subcommunities center on three diagnoses: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinsons Disease. Community members can describe their symptoms online in natural language, resulting in folksonomic tags available for clinical analysis and for browsing by other users to find patients like me. Forty-three percent of PatientsLikeMe symptom terms are present as exact (24%) or synonymous (19%) terms in the Unified Medical Language System Metathesaurus (National Library of Medicine; 2007AC). Slightly more than half of the symptom terms either do not match the UMLS, or are unclassifiable. A clinical vocabulary, SNOMED CT, accounts for 93% of the matching terms. Analysis of the failed matches reveals challenges for online patient communication, not only with healthcare professionals, but with other patients. In a Web 2.0 environment with lowered barriers between consumers and professionals, a deficiency in knowledge representation affects not only professionals, but consumers as well.  (+info)

How the Social Web Supports patient experimentation with a new therapy: The demand for patient-controlled and patient-centered informatics. (2/75)

The Internet is not simply being used to search for information about disease and treatment. It is also being used by online disease-focused communities to organize their own experience base and to harness their own talent and insight in service to the cause of achieving better health outcomes. We describe how news of a possible effect of lithium on the course of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) was acquired by and diffused through an on-line community and led to participation in a patient-driven observational study of lithium and ALS. Our discussion suggests how the social web drives demand for patient-centered health informatics.  (+info)

We describe an application ("Medline Publications")written for the Facebook platform that allows users to maintain and publish a list of their own Medline-indexed publications, as well as easily access their contacts lists. The system is semi-automatic in that it interfaces directly with the National Library of Medicine's PubMed database to find and retrieve citation data. Furthermore, the system has the capability to present the user with sets of other users with similar publication profiles. As of July 2008,Medline Publications has attracted approximately 759 users, 624 of which have listed a total of 5,193 unique publications.  (+info)

Web 2.0 and pharmacy education. (7/75)

New types of social Internet applications (often referred to as Web 2.0) are becoming increasingly popular within higher education environments. Although developed primarily for entertainment and social communication within the general population, applications such as blogs, social video sites, and virtual worlds are being adopted by higher education institutions. These newer applications differ from standard Web sites in that they involve the users in creating and distributing information, hence effectively changing how the Web is used for knowledge generation and dispersion. Although Web 2.0 applications offer exciting new ways to teach, they should not be the core of instructional planning, but rather selected only after learning objectives and instructional strategies have been identified. This paper provides an overview of prominent Web 2.0 applications, explains how they are being used within education environments, and elaborates on some of the potential opportunities and challenges that these applications present.  (+info)

And that is when, you realise that if he or she is the one for you or not, if you can stay with a person like that for your whole life or not. Of course lah, by that time both of you wouldnt be hesitate to fart in front of each other already.. In conclusion, dont get married too fast. =P. ----------------------------------------. Well, the thing I didnt know that is the same theory is applied to blogging. After this month, Im officially blogging for one year already. Its sad to say this but, be frank, I have already lost my passion for blogging already.. I used to blog daily, but now, I skip blogging more and more, my entries are getting shorter and shorter, and boring stuffs in my blog are getting more and more.. I thought that its because Im busy these days. Then I think about it again, yes, Im really busy these days. I have done a lot of things, moved to a new place, and a lot of things are still coming for me. But wait, do I really busy until I cant spare a little time out for ...

Every blogging shortcut you attempt leads to long term headaches. Shortcuts do not exist. Maybe ego convinces you a short, quick route to success can be found but every attempt leads to long headaches. For example, imagine believing publishing short, value-less comments on 1000 blogs daily boosts your online profits. Your ego deduces this sweet short cut gives you massive exposure which boosts your blogging profits quickly and easily. But shortcuts never exist. You just set yourself up to experience long headaches. Why? Bloggers label your hasty comments as spam. Going forward, every single comment you publish - even legit comments 2-3 paragraphs long - lands in spam, meaning barely anyone ever sees your comments again. Talk about a long, hard, painful headache to experience. Nobody sees your comments. How can you network? How can you make friends? Plus, even if bloggers see your spam comments in their backoffice, bloggers avoid you like the plague, being turned off by your spammy, relationship
Remember the good old days when people were writing about the death of blogging thanks to social media tools? When they wrote, rather prolifically, about how Google Plus, Tumblr, LinkedIns Pulse, Facebooks Notes, Medium and a whole bunch of other platforms were just going to kill our own ability to have a personal Web Journal of sorts where we would be able to host our own thoughts, have conversations, learn and overall build, over time, strong online communities about topics we were all passionate about and that we would keep on writing about for years to come? Well, 21 years later, blogging is still alive and kicking, thank you very much! And on October 10th, 2015, I just made it through my 10th year blogiversary for http://elsua.net. Who knew… The Death of Blogging? Hummm, I dont think so!. Thing is this is not the first time I write about this very same topic, and Im pretty sure it wont be the last one either. Its also not the first time I share across the many benefits as to why ...
PART ONE - personal blogging. My experience of blogging is long on the Internet timescale-just over two years. I am not young or frivolous, I have a demanding professional job, Im a parent and a commuter, so I am always horrendously busy. Yet for those two years I have managed to quarry an hour or so in the evening to read blogs and, most nights, to write a post myself. Why, when I could be doing something more useful?. The answer, in my case, is simple. I am, like many of us, too busy for anything else. I have neither the time nor the energy to socialise in the evenings, and in any case want to see my children occasionally. I would like to have stimulating discourse with friends or like-minded people, and to find out and discuss new ideas and concepts. Before blogging, these aims seemed impossible to achieve. I dont want to spend what little leisure time I have passively sitting in front of a TV screen (somebody else deciding what information I receive), or asleep over an open book, which ...

News about blogs and blogging on the Internet. Commentary and archival information about Internet blogs and blogging from The New York Times.
Microblogging services such as Twitter are extremely popular. While they are commonly used by people who wish to reveal their names and friends to the world, some users, such as activists on the ground, may wish to be able to post without automatically revealing their identities or locations. An obvious approach is to use a low-latency anonymity system, such as Tor. However, low-latency systems fall prey to end-to-end timing attacks easily accomplished by an ISP or a government monitoring clients while also watching for posts to appear in real time on the microblogging site.. We present Ibis, a high-latency mix network designed specifically for microblogging. Ibis is an overlay network: the mix nodes can be microblogging clients that come online only sporadicly, and the intermediate encrypted messages are themselves posted as microblogged entries. We accomplish this through a novel cryptographic mix message format that uses only 47 bytes of overhead, while maintaining three-hop, 128-bit security ...
Why do they get so much attention? How do they keep producing such awesome blog posts? Why cant I do the same?. These questions used to bug me.. But as it turns out, theres no genius to it. In fact, writing a great blog post is more formulaic than it is artistic.. Its not about being innovative, creative and making something unique.. Quite the opposite.. Writing a killer blog post is about understanding the different elements - that when combined add up to something special. Taking what others have already figured out, and packaging it up in a way that captures your own personal touch.. You are just as qualified as anyone else to do it - you just need to get your hands dirty.. Ill save you some time though…. Ive been obsessing about it - gathering the best blog content I can find, and figuring out what makes it all so good. Why these blogs get more traffic, shares and engagement than all of ours.. The end result is the 21 elements in this blog post. All nicely packaged up with examples ...

Im hopeful that youll find something beneficial in reading whatever it is you read about; whether its a laugh, an idea, or a prayer. ...

Its been quite a journey! Whatever the politicians may say about not letting people fall out of the workplace, or that unemployment is bad for your health, for me, without that ten years of secure support I would never have managed to learn to live with my disability, let alone consider volunteering or working. The first few years I was in shock, then there were the years I had to learn to become an expert in Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and all the associated skills needed to manage an unpredictable, rare condition. In 2007 I started blogging as a way of reaching out to other disabled people in similar situations. In the back of my mind was always the vague idea that blogging would be a good way of discovering whether I had any talent as a writer, that maybe it might lead somewhere, but it was a fun and interesting hobby which helped with being so isolated. Gradually I started to learn more about disability, about communication and became more interested in the emerging social media platforms. ...

This study tested football players performance on the pitch against their performance on Twitter as explanations for Twitter popularity. Guided by network theory, social-identity theory, and basking in reflective glory and using data of all players of all teams in the Dutch premier league (Eredivisie), the multilevel models show that players with a Twitter account were more popular when they scored more goals, were non-Dutch, were on loan at another club, and were networkers actively following others on Twitter. The findings also show that context matters. Players under contract with a successful club receive an automatic bonus: Irrespective of their performance on the pitch or on Twitter, they automatically acquire more followers on Twitter. Players in general do not need to put a lot of effort into communicating on Twitter because sending tweets is unrelated to having more followers. Advertisers best options to reach larger and homogeneous audiences through football players are to choose ...

Ann Althouse and I filled in for a cancelled speaker on todays Socio-Legal Brown Bag, organized by Mark Suchman. We started with a mini-reprise of the Bloggership Conference, but participants in the brown bag were interested in why legal scholars seem to be more active bloggers than sociologists (for example).. One theory proposed was that law scholarship is closer to blogging in the sense that it is not peer reviewed; thus, blogging is more comfortable for legal scholars. A similar point was made by another participant, who suggested that law has fewer disciplinary conventions than sociology, so blogging would seem like a more natural extension of the job of a law professor. Ann suggested that law blogging may fourish because law professors like Lessig, Volokh, and Reynolds paved the way.. Just curious: is it true that legal scholars are over-represented in the blogosphere? That sounds right, but there seem to be lots of economists with blogs. And maybe people in other fields, too.. Anyway, my ...

Jane here from Dearauthor.com. We are running a viral blogging experiment to see if bloggers can have an affect on the real world market. This idea was inspired by Anne Frasiers blog entry about her dwindling print runs. (I cant find the exact post). The hand term is stolen from a famous Seinfeld episode where George tries to gain hand in his relationship by doing everything opposite to his instincts. (no original ideas here).. I chose Nalini Singhs Slave to Sensation because I really loved the book and because she is a new author without any significant exposure. Ms. Singh lives in New Zealand and will be doing limited promotional work outside the internet (ie no signings). Slave to Sensation is her first single title mass market. Shes written 5 category romances. I had never heard of her when she emailed me to ask if I would review her book.. The chances of Singh making it onto the USA Today bestseller list or any other list is not great. I wondered when I read Anne Frasiers blog post ...
Darren Rowse, now Problogger: On Sunday I preached a sermon at my local church. I used to do this weekly when I worked as a minister years ago - but its been a while since I had to do it (funnily enough I find it a lot more nerve wracking getting up in front of a couple of hundred people to speak than writing a post for tens of thousands!).. As I was preparing for preaching last week it struck me how similar my workflow for it was to putting together a blog post (although a blog post is usually a lot quicker in my experience).. This video identifies some of the stages I went through last week that are similar to how I go about writing many blog posts.. Read the transcription on Problogger. I thought this would be particularly interesting for those who are interested in #medialit.. ...
Lets break out of this self-imposed link blogging format for just one post… its not every day the biggest secret youve ever kept gets revealed on the front pages of the national press.. I have an admission to make about Belle de Jour.. Its time for me to admit that I solved the puzzle of her identity almost at the very start after she (as Belle) sent me the link to her new blog to add to the list of Updated UK Blogs. Sending the link to me implied somebody who knew quite a lot about how UK blogging worked at the time and I found it hard to believe that an escort that had starting blogging would use me to announce the blog to the world. Then, after BdJ proceeded to knock the ball out of the park in the blog writing department, I started to seriously consider if it was somebody I knew.. In late 2003 I was well placed to guess Belles identity. Id been blogging myself for three years at that point, I had met many London bloggers and briefly read most of the UK-written blogs during 2000 and ...
vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Blogging for lawyers is one of the most cost-effective - in fact generally effective - marketing tool that lawyers can use to generate new clients and business. But what if your blogging efforts could be increased by almost 50 per cent using some simple techniques that anyone can use?. The trick is to use SEO the right way and we found a case study that shows exactly what you can do to - in this case - boost blog traffic by 48.7 per cent.. That translates into a lot of extra traffic.. Its well worth reading or passing to your law firm SEO expert. Check it out right here.. And potential business.. So following the check list is something you need to do meticulously to achieve the results. But more than that, the results shown by the blog post on Backlinko subsequently - like just a few short weeks later - increased to 88.3 per cent.. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]. ...
I feel I have to add my 2 cents to the blogging tension currently going on. I never had one bad comment and never felt excluded by the blog-community. I also blog to keep track of what is happening and of course my blog moved from infertility and the drama that came with it to a pregnancy blog to a parenting blog. I dont know what else itll be turning into in the future but I like to think that it can be anything I like. One thing I certainly noticed is that I can now count on one hand the comments I may get any time I post. I have cyber friends who I know will stop by to see what happens in my side of the World and would live a message, and other who may just be reading and say nothing. I would hope that, should I need support at some point in the future that they will be there for me like in the past, but of course I dont know that. I do feel a bit sad at times, as if Ive lost friends. So Im not sure if its because the bloggers that once shared infertility and are now happily parenting ...

And every blogger (or excuse me, ARTIST) approaches their craft in a different way. Some work in the wee hours of the morning, others in the way more fun hours of the night. Some do it as a hobby, some do it professionally, and others do it to complain about their estranged family members or to share erotic Harry Potter fan fiction or whatever. Blogging is a diverse game, yall ...
Let me tell you a few stories about how I have nearly stopped blogging. Some of these stories you may know; others I have not talked about before. The events behind these stories have all hinged on Englands illiberal and antiquated approach to defamation laws. Those laws must change and here is why.. Writing a blog, surprisingly, is not without its serious risks. Hobbies like skiing, diving or playing rubgy can leave you badly injured or even killed. Blogging a weekly article on a subject of your interest can also leave you with a ruined life.. In the case of blogging, that risk comes from English libel laws that expose writers to the real danger that they may be financially ruined.. When you chose to write about a subject that inevitably questions, even tangentially, the beliefs, motives and business practices of others, then you lay yourself open to some very serious consequences - and there is only so much you can do to protect yourself.. I write about superstitious medical beliefs. I do not ...
Black-cheeked lovebirds are considered the most endangered of all the African parrot species. Avian experts advocate for captive black-cheeked lovebirds to be placed into well-managed breeding programs to ensure species survival because this species is so endangered in the wild.
It is generally the case that couples with thriving, strong relationships have well-developed emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence describes a persons ability to be aware of, control, and express emotions in a healthy manner. In other words, it is the capacity to handle relationships appropriately and empathetically. In a partnership, emotional intelligence translates into the ability to be in touch with your own emotions as well as those of your partner.. A persons capacity for empathy and ability to talk about emotions in a healthy and loving way are both components of emotional intelligence. In a partnership or marriage, emotional intelligence may be seen in many areas. It is sustained over the course of a lifetime and is vital for making love last.. The following are eight key areas where emotionally intelligent couples practice loving well.. 1. Friendship. At the core of a good relationship is friendship. Emotionally intelligent couples stand the test of time because they are ...
September 2nd, 2019 at 10:52 AM As someone who has been an abuse survivor, I had to focus everything on my past partner. Getting into see therapy will be the first step to fixing this mindset. However, due to my past relationships, it is making my much healthier one suffer. I wouldnt call it codepedent because frankly, I hate spending time together all the time. However, it does it tiring when your partner will talk bad about you to others when you say you need me time but you asking for the same is you being controlling and abusive. So I believe there are some fine lines that are really important and vary in everything relationship. Codependency and what me time is for every couple isnt going to be the same.. ...
We bloggers have additional reason to hate Word. Blog posts or (God forbid) key snippets of HTML or Javascript used to enhance blog posts and templates, if composed or filtered through Microsoft Word, will acquire all sorts of deviant code. It looks vaguely like [o:p] - I dare not render it precisely, even by way of demonstration, because of this five-character strings potential to wreak technological havoc. If youre lucky, the Word-contaminated post wont render in your blogging platforms preview function, and you know better than to mash the publish button. If youre unlucky, it looks good enough on your screen, and your decision to publish then destroys a bunch of RSS feeds and XML scripts that power other peoples blogs and websites ...
So this past Friday (February 19th) was my blogs 11 year anniversary. I published my first post here back in February 19th 2005, a really odd post which I find hilarious now since my blog has become what it is today. If I had known my blog would end up here I would have probably posted something a bit less… crude. But, what I just realized a few moments ago is that this February also marks the 13th anniversary of my first post on my first blog ever. Back in 2003 me and a few friends launch a blog called Qhate and my first post there was published on February 6th, 2003. At that time we were the first blog based in Kuwait and unlike my early posts on 248AM, I actually enjoy reading my old stuff on Qhate. For those of you who dont know, Qhate started off as a war blog in which we were posting about life in Kuwait during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. So reading through my old posts there just takes me back in time during the volatile period. If youve never gone through some of the posts there you ...

Garry Trudeau, who does the Doonesbury cartoon, takes a cheap shot at bloggers. It is fairly obvious that the journalist establishment is becoming threatened by the fear of competition which challenges them on the one issue they cant deal with, the truth. Trudeau is married to Jane Pauley, an expert at the trivial nonsense that now passes for journalism. Her most recent show was so bad that nobody watched it and it was cancelled. People now have options, and are no longer prepared to put up with watching distracting irrelevancies which are used to hide the truth. Trudeau, whose cartoon used to be important, has taken on the nice-but-stupid persona of his wife, and Doonesbury is now a sad shadow of what it was twenty years ago. It is curious that Trudeau insinuates that bloggers are somehow mentally ill, when Pauley herself boasts of being completely insane. You have to wonder if Trudeau was nagged into this cartoon and is taking his subtle revenge ...

So Ive been in this pit, worrying and trying to figure out if I should continue to blog about our journey through cancer and chemo or if enough is enough already, until last night when Daves Nana called to check on him. He had his fifth round of chemo on Monday (most of you didnt know because I didnt tell). We talked for a few minutes and she gave me the perspective I needed to resolve my wallowing two-fold. First, she told me, I asked the kids [the ones who live near her] if you had posted anything on the Internet or whatever you do, but they said you hadnt. Nana is 90, if youll remember - it was her birthday party we missed the day after Dave had surgery. Even she is looking to the Internet for information, though she doesnt have a computer of her own. Then, when I reluctantly told her that Dave wasnt home because he was playing golf (yes, two days after chemo), she responded with laughter and, Thats wonderful! That made my day that even though he feels bad hes playing golf ...
Its hard sometimes to know how much to share on this blog. Its a fine line between writing about issues that are relevant to people who are grieving and giving away too much about my private life and that of my family. But I wrote a book. In it, I felt it necessary to be as completely honest about difficult things, things we dont like to talk about, in order for that book to be authentic, to help others going through what I went through. I know from emails that I have received from grieving people that my honesty has been the most important aspect of my book. My honesty is what has helped others through their own difficult times ...

We have all seen the claims on blogs, in articles and on places like You Tube that running shoes weaken muscles and that is why we should not be using the big bulky motion controlling running shoes. The claims are made quite regularly and with a certain amount of assertiveness that you would have to believe that those making the claims actually have some evidence to back up the claims, but they dont.... Something funny has happened both times Ive moved abroad: I become way more active online, especially with social media. Partly it has to do with the fact that Im visiting a lot of really cool places that I want to share. But even more than that, its for myself… it is the easiest way to feel like Im still connected to everyone at home. I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook which is 90% hate and 10% appreciation for Facebook Messenger because that is how I often communicate overseas. Social media makes me feel like Im still keeping in touch with people, even when I barely am. It makes me feel involved, even when Im a billion miles away.. Blogging does too, but it takes more time and thoughtfulness, and recently, Ive been taking that time and doing other things with it. Ive been going on more micro-adventures and meeting new people……..and watching a lot of Game of Thrones……. (I started it two weeks ago and Im on season 5, so.) Not blogging felt good for a few weeks. And ...
My apologies that Ive been very quiet here on Georneys recently. My travel and work schedule were extremely hectic during the past month… plus I was working on a couple of scientific papers related to my PhD thesis research. However, life is a bit calmer now, so hopefully Ill catch up on some blogging soon! I want to share some more pictures from my trip to Australia, amongst other things.. Ill start with a few pictures from my recent trip to Namibia. Recently, I had the good fortune to spend a couple of weeks in the Sperrgebiet in Namibia doing some fieldwork on behalf of De Beers. I do not blog about my industry work here on Georneys (unless the work is published and thus in the open domain), so I cant share the details of my trip. However, I can share a few pictures of some of the tourist attractions that I saw during my field work.. Sperrgebiet means Prohibited Area in German (the Germans colonized Namibia, so some German words and town names are still found in the country). The ...

Obviously, I have not been able to keep up with blogging as much lately. Things in my life have gotten more and more busy since 2008 and 2011 looks to increase that trend. In addition, my comfort level with being Gluten Free has also grown to the point where the thirst for knowledge has leveled off. Ive pondered this many times since starting Gluten Free Raleigh in 2008 and have finally decided to open this blog up to other authors. Being Gluten Free is being part of a community - a community that is always there for the newest members. This blog has been a vehicle for that community to educate and spread awareness for Celiac Disease and Gluten Free living. Rather than shut this blog down because I cannot pay it the attention is deserves, Ive decided to take this step. I will still contribute from time to time, but adding additional bloggers will allow for this blog to continue to serve its original intended purpose. In all the cities and towns internet speed is very good, wi-fi is offered in a lot of places and life goes on at a rather hurried pace. Here things are slightly different. Our internet currently runs at less than dial-up speed and thats on a good day. Were limited on options as to how we connect to the internet and have to use a dongle which to be frank is absolutely pants! We curently use a M-tel homebox which is supposed to supply our internet and home phone service via wireless and works very much like a mobile phone. Of course that is when it wants to work - the internet is usually ok (apart from being slow) but does get affected by the weather, the phone part rarely works and people get tired of trying to ring us and to be honest I understand why. We also have pre-paid mobile phones with the same company and they work great if you want to stand in the middle of the field with one leg in the air, shouting like a lunatic because the person calling cant hear you and freezing your backside ...

By itself that did not bother me. I like looking at pretty girls and nude pretty girls even more. But that was not the only reason I subscribed to Playboy. Unfortunately, almost every other feature that I did like in the magazine was also discontinued. I was an avid reader of the Jokes Page…no more jokes in the magazine. I also enjoyed the clever and well-drawn cartoons, many offering drawings of beautiful women that could not possibly exist outside of fantasy. Bye-bye cartoons. Another source of tongue-in-cheek humor were the Men and Women articles every month. Now those, too, are a thing of the past ...
I did not receive an absentee ballot for the recent revote of the school vote. Apparently none were sent? Or did you receive one and mine was omitted? I prefer to vote at home. I signed the paper for absentee ballots. The Secretary of state said it is up to me to enforce the election rules. It is up to me to ask the town clerk to explain, go to court if need be. No, my body cannot take any more of that. My vote was not counted. If you like that policy, carry on. Just dont presume to know all the reasons I do not want to vote out in public. I thought that is what absentee ballots were all about.. update 5.19.15 follow up post to front porch forum. Several issues back I inquired if others in Monkton did not receive absentee ballots for the town school budget re-vote. I got no response. I do not interpret that as apathy or a conspiracy against me, although I am sorely tempted to take the easy way out. It is stuck in my craw, the assistant town clerk (why did we need an assistant?) said we talked ...
There are economic studies that show that attractive people earn more money and, conversely, unattractive earn less money. Im pretty sure that Ive heard something along those lines before, but I had no idea they were called the beauty premium and the ugliness penalty. How wonderful and sad at the same time. But while these seem like pretty commonplace ideas, there is no real evidence as to why they exist. A new paper published in the Journal of Business and Psychology tested three of the leading explanations of the existence or the beauty premium and ugliness penalty: discrimination, self-election, and individual differences. To do this, the researchers used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health. This is a nationally representative sample that includes measurements of physical attractiveness (5-point scale) at four time points to the age of 29. People were placed into 5 categories based on physical attractiveness, from very attractive to very unattractive. They ...
If you are a true student you may wish to broaden your perspective some what. Consider the possibility that Dawson, Mottron and Gernsbacher might not have all the answers when it comes to autism. Try reading with an open mind the hundreds of studies all showing some improvement in abilities for autistic children in receipt of ABA. Try understanding what the evidence based standard of evaluation of such interventions means. And if you are truly open minded imagine for a moment that parents who live with, love and care for, their autistic children 24/7 might have more understanding of their own children than Ms Dawson, a total stranger, with markedly high communication abilities. Just try it as an exercise in intellectual growth. Or try it for the heck of it ...
Recent research published in Occupational & Environmental Medicine carried out by Swedish scientists has again highlighted the exposure of hairdressers to potentially hazardous chemicals, this time of carcinogenic and sensitising toluidines in hair dyes and hair-waving (perming) products. This is just the latest in a long line of news stories about chemicals in personal care…
Our colleagues in the medical industry operate differently. In many cases the physician that diagnoses the problem doesnt actually treat the problem. If I fall off a ladder and break my arm its likely that an ER doc is going to assign a differential diagnosis to the problem and order a radiograph thats read by a radiologist, who diagnoses the fracture. At that point, its likely that I would be referred to an orthopedic surgeon to treat the broken arm.. What you dont see very often in this multidisciplinary track of care is the patient being concerned that there is overtreatment going on. For one thing, its often very problem based. I wouldnt have shown up in the ER if my arm wasnt bent in a funny direction. For another thing, there are several clinicians that are coming to an agreement about the care youre going to receive. Thats a big difference from what typically happens in dentistry. Not that we dont refer to specialists, but its pretty rare that a patients diagnosis and ...
Since a wind turbine generates electricity from the energy in the wind, the wind leaving the turbine must have a lower energy content than the wind arriving in front of the turbine.. This follows directly from the fact that energy can neither be created nor consumed. If this sounds confusing, take a look at the definition of energy in the Reference Manual. A wind turbine will always cast a wind shade in the downwind direction. In fact, there will be a wake behind the turbine, i.e. a long trail of wind which is quite turbulent and slowed down, when compared to the wind arriving in front of the turbine. (The expression wake is obviously derived from the wake behind a ship). You can actually see the wake trailing behind a wind turbine, if you add smoke to the air passing through the turbine, as was done in the picture. (This particular turbine was designed to rotate in a counterclockwise direction which is somewhat unusual for modern wind turbines). Wind turbines in parks are usually spaced at ...
Anyone considering taking fish oil should first talk to their doctor who can recommend a therapeutic dose. Read the label to determine how much omega-3 is in each capsule as well as the recommended dosage. Doctor recommended brands are best, but in absence of a doctor recommendation, a reputable brand by an established, trusted, trustworthy company is best.. Fish oil is excellent for all round health and chiropractic patients taking the supplement can enjoy better health and better results from their chiropractic care.. Circumcision is a dangerous distraction in the fight against AIDS. There are six African countries where men are *more* likely to be HIV+ if theyve been circumcised: Cameroon, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, and Swaziland. Eg in Malawi, the HIV rate is 13.2% among circumcised men, but only 9.5% among intact men. In Rwanda, the HIV rate is 3.5% among circumcised men, but only 2.1% among intact men. If circumcision really worked against AIDS, this just wouldnt happen. We now have people calling circumcision a vaccine or invisible condom, and viewing circumcision as an alternative to condoms. The South African National Communication Survey on HIV/AIDS, 2009 found that 15% of adults across age groups believe that circumcised men do not need to use condoms ...
The program for the evening was presented by one Cindy Friedman, as lovely an individual as youd ever want to meet. Shes a fiber artist who does things like the piece to the left. There were two parts to her talk: The latter part was about her silk organza work and the process she uses to obtain these gorgeous results. It was fascinating. Equally interesting, however, was the first part of her presentation, which had to do with her efforts to introduce quilting to the people of Botswana. She taught us quite a bit about the health issues in that country: Her husband is an infectious disease physician who makes frequent trips to help reduce the rate of HIV and AIDS and other communicable diseases among the poor people who live there. Cindy has accompanied him on some of these trips and because she is the sort of person who would not want grass growing under her feet, she spends her time there working with local artists, helping them by bringing their art back to the United States to sell and ...
This has got me thinking about the value of being an expert versus being good in a lot of little things. I find it very difficult to focus on one or two things. I know this may not surprise anyone given my previous cheese tangent, but sometimes I feel like I have a little ADD, switching from one thing to the next. I think I see more value in getting somewhat proficient in a new skill than trying to squeeze the last ounce of perfection in a current skill such as blogging.. Ive often wondered about how this translates to my blogging in general. Regular readers know that I usually dont take time to find an image and put it into article. In fact, and I hate to admit it, but I dont proofread many of articles. While its easy to just say its Lazy being lazy, its really because Ive got a lot of other things going on. These other things often contribute to the very thing that I think get people to read my articles. For example, looking for investment properties is not quick or easy. However, ...
We all know how important it is to exercise. How it strengthens our bones, tones our muscles, and gets our blood pumping. Exercise even surpasses the physical realm and goes to the emotional one, boosting our moods and helping reduce stress. When someone is physically and emotionally healthy,...
I enjoyed Susanna Clarkes exciting yet intentionally stodgy adventure set in an early 19th Century England in which there is magic. This is an adult book, not a Potter-type story. The author engulfed herself for years in the writing and history of the time. For me it has one of the best characteristics of a long book: you hate to leave its world when the story ends. (One reviewer comments: she almost had me believing that that there used to be magic in England.) My enjoyment was not surprising since I am much involved with whimsy. Susannah Clarke is a grandmaster of whimsy, capable of inserting seamlessly the gentlest touch or the broadest breath at any moment. I fear that people in general barely tolerate whimsy, so I shall be curious to see how the book fares over the years. (But there IS much more to it than whimsy.) You can find many reviews here ...

I am a Korean adoptee who has been in reunion since 2009. I am also a wife and a mother of two, a sister, a friend, a relentless questioner of the status quo. My life as an adoptee is an ever-evolving journey full of complexity and seeming contradiction ...
I have a love-hate relationship with Mothers Day. Mostly, I love to hate it. I resent the commercialism around it and the implication that I want or need expensive gifts to feel appreciated. I dont. I dont need a steak lunch; I dont even need a special day. I would hate it if I only felt appreciated on one day of the year. I would hate it if my mothers only felt like I appreciated them on one day of the year. I try to make sure they know how much I appreciate them regularly. I celebrate Mothers Day every day of the year - sure, sometimes its with a prayer of thanksgiving that the monkeys are finally asleep at night, but if every day was fabulous, I would take it for granted. Dave does a great job of recognizing the work I do and thanking me for it regularly. Id much rather find all of the laundry washed and folded and the dishwasher emptied on random days of the year than wait an hour and a half on a special day at an overcrowded restaurant to receive an expensive present that some radio ...

For the last five years, Chris Stevick has helped his wife Elaine in her battle against a vicious type of cancer that the couple believes was caused by Elaines repeated use of Monsantos Roundup herbicide around a California property the couple owned. Now the roles are reversed as Elaine must help Chris face his own cancer.. Chris Stevick, who often mixed Roundup for his wife and tested the sprayer used to dispense the weed killer, was diagnosed last month with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Unlike Elaines aggressive type of NHL known as central nervous system lymphoma, Chriss cancer is a type that tends to grow slowly. He was diagnosed after a physical examination showed abnormalities in his blood and prompted further tests.. The diagnosis has prompted a scramble among lawyers involved in the sprawling Roundup products liability litigation given that the Stevicks lawsuit against Monsanto is set as the next federal case to go to trial. ...
