Determinants of antibodies to Cryptosporidium infection among gay and bisexual men with HIV infection. (1/504)

A cross-sectional serosurvey for markers of prior Cryptosporidium infection was conducted among homosexual or bisexual males infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); of 262 individuals approached, 236 (90%) agreed to participate. Serological response to two Cryptosporidium antigens was measured using a Western blot assay. The intensity or detection of serological responses to two Cryptosporidium antigens was not associated with CD4 cell counts or tap water consumption. A number of sexual practices were related to increased serological response for only the 27-kDa marker, including having had sex within the past 2 years, having anal sex and having had a larger number of sex partners during the past 2 years. Attending a spa or sauna was related to serological response to both the 27-kDa and 17-kDa markers. Based on these results, activities related to sexual activity appear to be a significant risk factors for prior Cryptosporidium infection.  (+info)

Sexual intercourse, abuse and pregnancy among adolescent women: does sexual orientation make a difference? (2/504)

CONTEXT: Although a limited amount of research has retrospectively explored the childhood and adolescent heterosexual experiences of lesbians, little is known about the prevalence of heterosexual behavior and related risk factors or about pregnancy histories among lesbian and bisexual teenagers. METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted using responses from a subsample of 3,816 students who completed the 1987 Minnesota Adolescent Health Survey. Behaviors, risk factors and pregnancy histories were compared among adolescents who identified themselves as lesbian or bisexual, as unsure of their sexual orientation and as heterosexual. RESULTS: Overall, bisexual or lesbian respondents were about as likely as heterosexual women ever to have had intercourse (33% and 29%, respectively), but they had a significantly higher prevalence of pregnancy (12%) and physical or sexual abuse (19-22%) than heterosexual or unsure adolescents. Among sexually experienced respondents, bisexual or lesbian and heterosexual women reported greater use of ineffective contraceptives (12-15% of those who used a method) than unsure adolescents (9%); bisexual or lesbian respondents were the most likely to have frequent intercourse (22%, compared with 15-17% of the other groups). In the sample overall, among those who were sexually experienced and among those who had ever been pregnant, bisexual or lesbian women were the most likely to have engaged in prostitution during the previous year. CONCLUSIONS: Providers of reproductive health care and family planning services should not assume that pregnant teenagers are heterosexual or that adolescents who say they are bisexual, lesbian or unsure of their sexual orientation are not in need of family planning counseling. Further research should explore the interactions between adolescent sexual identity development and sexual risk behaviors.  (+info)

Developing surveillance for HIV transmission and risk behaviours among high-risk groups in a central London health district. (3/504)

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to describe surveillance data on HIV transmission and risk behaviours in Camden and Islington, an inner London health district (population 360 000). This information is required to assess the effectiveness of HIV-AIDS prevention. METHODS: We focused on two groups in the local population most severely affected by the HIV epidemic: homosexual and bisexual men, and injecting drug users. Data were drawn from routine and survey data, national and local sources, and a special local survey. RESULTS: There were estimated to be 9250 homosexual men, with an estimated prevalence of 7.7 per cent (confidence interval (CI) 5.9-11.0) diagnosed with HIV infection resident within the health district, and 9900 injecting drug users, with an estimated prevalence of 0.8 per cent (CI 0.6-1.1), diagnosed with HIV infection. New HIV infections diagnosed amongst homosexual men having a named test in HIV testing services averaged 281 and was unchanged between 1992 and 1996. However, unlinked anonymous seroprevalence surveys showed a decline in HIV prevalence for both homosexual men attending a genito-urinary medicine clinic and for injecting drug users attending services. Local surveys indicated that, in the preceeding year, one in three homosexual men had had unprotected anal intercourse with a man, and 13 per cent of intravenous drug users had shared equipment. There appeared to be no change in these levels over the years studied. CONCLUSION: Population-based information on HIV is available at local level in England. It can be used for surveillance of HIV transmission and behaviour in high-risk groups, especially homosexual and bisexual men and intravenous drug users. Resources for HIV prevention are provided to all NHS districts, and surveillance is a cost-effective measure of the outcome of HIV prevention.  (+info)

Serologic evidence of human herpesvirus 8 transmission by homosexual but not heterosexual sex. (4/504)

Epidemiologic studies link Kaposi's sarcoma with a sexually transmitted agent. Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is likely to be that agent, but routes of transmission are poorly described. A seroepidemiologic study was conducted to determine whether HHV-8 is transmitted sexually between heterosexuals. Sera from 2718 patients attending a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic were tested for antibodies to HHV-8 and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Information on sex partners in the previous 12 months and past STDs were obtained by questionnaire. Relationships between possible risk factors and HHV-8 infection were assessed by logistic regression. Overall, seroprevalence of HHV-8 was 7.3%. Independent risk factors for HHV-8 in the whole group were homo/bisexuality and birth in Africa and, among homo/bisexual men, a history of syphilis and HSV-2 and human immunodeficiency virus seropositivity. Among heterosexuals there was no evidence for sexual transmission; the only independent risk factor for HHV-8 seropositivity was birth in Africa.  (+info)

Chemokine receptor polymorphisms and human immunodeficiency virus disease progression. (5/504)

The role of polymorphisms in genes encoding chemokines and their receptors (CCR2B, SDF-1, and the promoter region of CCR5) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease progression was studied in 132 white HIV type 1 (HIV-1)-infected participants from a United Kingdom cohort study. Genotyping was done by use of amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers, and Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine the impact of polymorphisms on time to a CD4 cell count <200x106/L and to CDC stage IV disease. The results confirm a significant association of the CCR2B-64I mutant genotype with slower progression to a CD4 count <200 (hazards ratio [HR], 0.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.17-0.91) but not with the SDF-1alpha 3' UTR homozygous mutation. The effects of the CCR5 and CCR2 mutations were genetically independent and similar in the magnitude of their protective effect on progression to a CD4 count <200 cells. A novel finding was an association of borderline significance between homozygosity for C at nucleotide position 59353 in the CCR5 promoter region and a slower rate of CD4 cell decline to <200x106/L (HR, 0. 58; 95% CI, 0.34-0.996).  (+info)

Complex transmission dynamics of clonally related virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis associated with barhopping by predominantly human immunodeficiency virus-positive gay men. (6/504)

Limited data suggest that measures to reduce tuberculosis transmission should be based on locations rather than on personal contacts. Molecular epidemiologic methods (analysis of IS6110 patterns, spoligotypes, variable numbers of tandem DNA repeats, and automated DNA sequence data) identified a cohort of 48 persons who were infected with progeny of the same Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain. Epidemiologic investigation documented that a large proportion of the patients were gay white human immunodeficiency virus-positive men. Most practiced barhopping, an activity that involved patronizing many bars in the same neighborhood each night. Few subjects were directly linked to more than 1 or 2 other persons by conventional investigation methods, which shows that the transmission dynamics were unusually complex compared with most previously described episodes of strain spread. The data support the concept that identification of locations where pathogen dissemination likely occurs may provide additional strategies for targeted tuberculosis control.  (+info)

Sexual and drug-use risk factors for HIV and STDs: a comparison of women with and without bisexual experiences. (7/504)

OBJECTIVES: This study was done to compare risk factors for HIV/STDs in women who reported having had sex with both men and women and women who reported having had sex with men only. METHODS: Female participants in a multisite, randomized HIV/STD prevention study in the Seattle area reported both having had sex with a man in the 3 months before and having at least 1 risk factor for HIV/STDs during the year before the study. Of these women, 38% who reported ever having had sex with a woman were compared with those who reported having had sex with men only. RESULTS: Women who had had sex with both men and women were more likely than women who had had sex with men only to report drug use in the 3 months before the study, a greater lifetime number of male partners, a sex partner who had had sex with a prostitute, an earlier age at sexual debut, and forced sexual contact (P < .01 for all comparisons). Women who had had sex with both men and women had a mean of 3.2 of these 5 risk factors, vs 2.1 among women who had had sex with men only (P < .001). CONCLUSION: Women who had had sex with both men and women were more likely than women who had had sex with men only to engage in multiple risk behaviors. Health workers should be aware of bisexual experience among women, since this may be a marker for multiple risk behaviors for HIV/STDs.  (+info)

Cigarette smoking among gay and bisexual men. (8/504)

OBJECTIVES: This study measured the prevalence of cigarette smoking among gay men and identified associations with smoking. METHODS: Household-based (n = 696) and bar-based (n = 1897) sampling procedures yielded 2593 gay male participants from Portland, Ore, and Tucson, Ariz, in the spring of 1992. RESULTS: Forty-eight percent of the combined sample reported current smoking, a rate far above prevalence estimates for men in Arizona (z = 14.11, P < .001) or Oregon (z = 24.24, P < .001). Significant associations with smoking included heavy drinking, frequent gay bar attendance, greater AIDS-related losses, HIV seropositivity, lower health rating than members of same age cohort, lower educational attainment, and lower income. CONCLUSIONS: Rates of cigarette smoking are very high among gay men. Tobacco prevention and cessation campaigns should be designed to reach the gay male community.  (+info)

Both the straight and communities that are gay/lesbian to own just two feasible types of bisexuality, neither of which represents bisexual people accurately. The first is the transitional model of bisexuality, thinking that most bisexuals are in reality homosexual or lesbian but they are simply on the road to ultimately being released as homosexual. One other could be the pathological model, that bisexuals are neurotic or mentally unstable whether they are straight or gay/lesbian, and that they just cant make a decision because they are in conflict trying to decide. Both models see bisexuality as a short-term experience or even a phase created away from confusion as opposed to a traditional intimate orientation. Some see bisexuality as inherently subversive since it blurs the boundaries, confronting both heterosexuals and men that are gay lesbian females with intimate ambiguity. Because of this, bisexuality challenges concepts of sex, conventional relationship and family members ...

It is not easy to say how common bisexuality is, since little research has been done on this subject; most studies on sexuality have focused on heterosexuals or homosexuals. Based on research done by Kinsey in the 1940s and 1950s, as many as 15-25% of women and 33-46% of men may be bisexual, based on their activities or attractions. Bisexuals are in many ways a hidden population. In our culture, it is generally assumed that a person is either heterosexual (the default assumption) or homosexual (based on appearance or behavioral clues.) Because bisexuality does not fit into these standard categories, it is often denied or ignored.. When it is recognized, bisexuality is often viewed as being part heterosexual and part homosexual, rather than being a unique identity. Bisexuality threatens the accepted way of looking at the world by calling into question the validity of rigid sexual categories, and encourages acknowledgment of the existence of a diverse range of sexuality. Since there is not a ...

Bailey does have evidence about the existence of bisexuality in men. Its very preliminary, and hardly tells a definitive story, but at least its some evidence. Its a shame that in his interview, he didnt stick to it, and that the reporter wasnt responsible enough to do so either. The evidence is reported in a paper titled Sexual arousal patterns of bisexual men, by Rieger, Chivers, and Bailey (Rieger and Chivers are two of his graduate students) that is currently in press at Psychological Science. Here are the basics of the experiment. Bailey and his students recruited 30 gay, 38 straight, and 33 bisexual men through gay-oriented and alternative magazines in the Chicago area. Sexual orientation was measured entirely through self-report, using the Kinsey scale, with 1 indicating homosexuality, 5 indicating heterosexuality, and 2-4 indicating bisexuality. They had these men view six 2-minute videos of sexual material, along with videos of sexually-neutral material. Two of the sexual videos ...

The aim of the dissertation is to discuss the use of various notions of bisexuality - focusing on notions of male bisexuality and openness - in a material from interviews and media. The discussion is set in the perspective rhetoric discursive psychology in relation to bi research as a rhetorical context. The dissertation is intended to be a contribution to both a scientific and a social discussion of bisexuality and bi research, as well as of ideals of openness, moderation and subjectivity. The interview material consists of interviews with men aged between 21 and 31 years who identify as bisexual or have bisexual experiences. The media material consist of articles from Swedish daily newspapers from 1995-2005 where talk of bisexuality is used. I use two different materials in order to demonstrate the rhetorical contexts importance for constructions of subjectivity. Constructions of bisexual subjectivity and the use of talk about bisexuality look different, depending on the rhetorical context in ...

BACKGROUND: Since 1991, unlinked anonymous HIV testing of homosexual/bisexual males attending genitourinary clinics in Edinburgh and Glasgow has been conducted and resulting prevalence data have been published annually. More detailed information which provides an understanding of what proportion of HIV infected men attending genitourinary clinics in central Scotland (i) remain undetected, (ii) acquire sexually transmitted infections following HIV diagnosis, and (iii) possibly become HIV infected either abroad or following sex with someone from abroad, is reported by the authors. METHODS: Unlinked anonymous HIV testing of syphilis serology specimens from homosexual/bisexual males attending genitourinary clinics during 1991-5. RESULTS: Of 3468 specimens tested, 165 (4.8%) were HIV positive. Thirty five per cent (57) of all HIV positive specimens were from men whose infection remained undetected following clinic attendance. Of the 80 attenders who knew themselves to be HIV positive before their ...

This is a beautiful illustration of the flaw in applying human sexual conventions to non-human organisms. researchers studying deep-sea squid found that all of the squid, male and female alike, were speckled with sperm packets - the males just flick these things out at any passing squid, on the chance that its a female. Its silly to call this bisexuality or same-sex mating, though - its pretty darned common in invertebrates. Many species of sea urchins, for instance, indulge in synchronized ejaculatory orgies: on one or a few days a year, all of the individuals in a colony simultaneously spew eggs and sperm into the water, to the degree that they can turn the ocean milky white with semen and ova. Do we call that homosexuality? Is it even right to refer to it as an orgy? Its just indiscriminate fertilization.. The authors of the paper, at least, get it exactly right.. ...

Pride Month could be drawing to a detailed, but that doesn’t suggest we aren’t celebrating now and year round! All the bases of bisexuality before we dive into this list, let’s cover. (No, we don’t suggest exactly the same †base system’ you probably discovered at a center college sleepover.) First, bisexuality will not necessarily mean attraction to men that are ONLY females. Alternatively, this means attraction to one or more intercourse or sex plus it doesn’t exclude non binary people. 2nd, while bisexuality as well as other non identities that are monosexual like pansexuality and omnisexuality, may overlap, it is nevertheless insensitive to inform some ...
In the U.S. many heterosexual men see bisexual men as less masculine, and many gay men look at bi men as more masculine. In many instances, straight and gay people see bisexuality as a phase that will pass; they call us liars or pretenders or promiscuous.. We bi people are the most stigmatized of the LGBT+ community.. Bisexual men are considered sexually promiscuous, so incapable of containing their libido that they also need men to satisfy their sexual hunger.. Bi men, thus, are seen as so hyper masculine that any hole will do, as long as you are the one doing the penetration. On the other hand, if you like to receive penetration, you are seen as too feminine.. He believes women face stigma of a different sort. Bi women, too, are seen as promiscuous. They are regarded as sluts who are addicted to sex.. This is because bisexuality is considered a choice and not a sexual orientation.. How can bisexual people be made to feel less like outsiders?. ...
Yet researchers were unable to produce direct evidence of bisexual arousal patterns in men, said Dr. J. Michael Bailey, a professor of psychology at Northwestern and the new studys senior author.. A 1979 study of 30 men found that those who identified themselves as bisexuals were indistinguishable from homosexuals on measures of arousal. Studies of gay and bisexual men in the 1990s showed that the two groups reported similar numbers of male sexual partners and risky sexual encounters. And a 1994 survey by The Advocate, the gay-oriented newsmagazine, found that, before identifying themselves as gay, 40 percent of gay men had described themselves as bisexual.. Im not denying that bisexual behavior exists, said Dr. Bailey, but I am saying that in men theres no hint that true bisexual arousal exists, and that for men arousal is orientation.. But other researchers -- and some self-identified bisexuals -- say that the technique used in the study to measure genital arousal is too crude to ...
Fluidity is a term sometimes used in reference to bisexual identity, thus positioning sexuality as an adaptive, evolving set of behaviors performed to constitute alternately straightness or queerness. Part of the speciousness of using fluidity to describe bisexuality centers on the implication that heterosexuality and homosexuality occupy opposite ends of a psychological spectrum, leaving bisexuality vaguely straddling poles of identity, without specificity or intent. This article is predominantly concerned with the notion of intentionality in bisexual behavior and whether or not deliberate choices are made to participate in communities that identify as either straight or queer. Rather than framing this investigation in terms of whether or not sexuality itself is a choice, this article compares bisexuals who alternately engage in straight or queer practices in the context of passing, as when a person presents herself as an alternate race. Using personal narratives, theoretical works from Judith Butler,
Biphobia can lead people to deny that bisexuality is real, asserting that people who identify as bisexual are not genuinely bisexual, or that the phenomenon is far less common than they claim. One form of this denial is based on the heterosexist view that heterosexuality is the only true or natural sexual orientation. Thus anything that deviates from that is instead either a psychological pathology or an example of anti-social behavior. In these instances, homophobia and biphobia are largely the same.[citation needed]. Another form of denial stems from binary views of sexuality: that people are assumed monosexual, i.e. exclusively homosexual (gay/lesbian) or heterosexual (straight). Throughout the 1980s, modern research on sexuality was dominated by the idea that heterosexuality and homosexuality were the only legitimate orientations, dismissing bisexuality as secondary homosexuality.[2] In that model, bisexuals are presumed to be either closeted lesbian/gay people wishing to appear ...

If you are a person who is, or has been, or possibly one day could be attracted to individuals of more than one sex/gender, please consider sharing your experience through this survey. This is an exciting new survey focused on people whose sexual orientation does not fit a mono-sexual model. The survey seeks to understand the workplace experiences of people who identify as bisexual, or as one of the many alternative labels describing erotic fluidity (such as pansexual, men/women who have sex with men and women (MSMW and WSMW), queer-identified, many-gender-loving, etc), in order to educate heterosexual, gay, and lesbian co-workers, and impact workplace policies and practices.. The survey has 78 questions in five sections, many of them simple check-the-box and others with room to answer as fully as makes sense to you. It takes approximately 35-45 minutes to complete. It is important to complete your survey during one log-in session - once you log out, you cannot return to complete the survey, ...
Sexual minorities with SUDs are more likely to have additional (comorbid or co-occurring) psychiatric disorders. For example, gay and bisexual men and lesbian and bisexual women report greater odds of frequent mental distress and depression than their heterosexual counterparts. Transgender children and adolescents have higher levels of depression, suicidality, self-harm, and eating disorders than their non-transgender counterparts. Thus it is particularly important that LGBT people in SUD treatment be screened for other psychiatric problems (as well as vice versa) and all identifiable conditions should be treated concurrently.. LGBTQ people are also at increased risks for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) due to both intravenous drug use and risky sexual behaviors. HIV infection is particularly prevalent among gay and bisexual men (men who have sex with men, or MSM) and transgender women who have sex with men. SUD treatment can also help prevent HIV transmission among those at high risk. For ...

Bi Brigade started in the spring of 2014 in response to some awful advice given to bisexuals by straight and gay sex columnists. Emily Yoffe, also known as Dear Prudence, advised a young woman just beginning to open up about her bisexuality to remain closeted. She compared the womans sexual orientation to a kink and said that, because she is monogamously married to a man, her orientation was irrelevant to the people in her life. Dear Abby told a bi reader that announcing her bisexuality would be a mistake because it might be seen as announcing that she was available. Dont even get me started on the decades of bad advice Dan Savage gave his bi readers. Although the famed gay sex columnist has gotten better about his awareness of bi+ issues in recent years, it does not, in fact, get better for many bi people ...

She has been featured in major media outlets (Pune Mirror and Tehelka, to name a couple) and, in February, became the youngest and only bisexual panelist at the Harvard India Conference that featured, for the first time in its history, a panel discussion on LGBT Rights in India: The Way Forward. Along with U.K. based bisexual activist Laurence Brewer, she recently launched the website Bi Inspired that aims to create a visible support system of bisexual individuals across the globe.. Kumar grew up in what one might characterize as a typical conservative Indian family. I was conditioned, quite early ...
To suggest that the church simply drop all this silliness is to suggest that the church adopt a materialist understanding of good and evil. It is an assertion that the church should adopt an anthropology that is contrary to the Revelation of God. For the only way that we would know that homosexual behavior should be considered good is by subordination of Revelation to the desires of men. We would have to decide that the stated desire of homosexuals becomes in itself a form of new Revelation - all the while blinding ourselves to the obvious complementarity that exists everywhere in the created world around us.. As a rugby playing Freshman at Harvard, for instance, I used to be plagued by the thought of being thrown into prison, forced into a dress, and having to submit sexually to another man. Of course, at the time that didnt mean to me that I was in anyway bisexual . . . because I was entirely unprepared for the potentially devastating effects that could have on how I viewed myself and my future. Seriously, I might have committed suicide if Id had to face the fact that I deeply and truly wanted to go to bed with man and get fucked like a woman ...

Transformation and exchange are two of the most thematically interesting ways to explore gender and relationships in fiction. This isnt a new idea, with the story of Tiresias providing an example from Greek antiquity. Such stories can range from ignorant and banal to nuanced and powerful. As a trans woman, I have long held a fascination with them, and they ultimately helped me come to understand what I wanted from my body and my life. Striking Vipers, the first episode of season 5 of Black Mirror, is neither of these, instead being a tragic, wasteful misfire that perhaps handles some of its other themes better than this one.. For purposes of this post the omission of same gender loving women in large part is not intentional or meant to exclude them but as there are hardly any documented records of such instances but more so on the side of MSM in my archives, men who have sex with men in the broader context. Exploitative same sex relational matters do often result in some injury from an unconfirmed standpoint when the grapevine system gets wind of them but when jealousy is the reason those conflicts tend not to often lead to a murder, it seems that there has been a preoccupation with more powerful or middle class victims whose cases are used to legitimize homophobia as if only such persons suffer same. A discussion of sorts has carried on in response to a Gleaner letter some days ago where the writer implored LGBT persons to report incidents to predominantly JFLAG while trying to differentiate intimate partner violence from genuine homophobic cases. ...

AU - Halkitis, Perry N.. AU - Orwat, John. PY - 2013/10. Y1 - 2013/10. N2 - Background: Few studies have examined the impact of minority stress theory (MST) upon sexual risk behavior among gay and bisexual men using club drugs. Similar studies have focused on ethnic minorities and women; however, gay and bisexual men demonstrate greater likelihood for risk behaviors leading to HIV/AIDS. Objective: This study examines sexual risk behavior from the perspective of minority stress theory upon substance-using gay and bisexual men and their partners. Methods: Multivariable logistic regression analysis examined minority stress associations with participant sexual risk behaviors, drug use, and partner type, controlling for demographics. Results: 396 gay and 54 bisexual respondents, ages 18-67, reported at least one-time drug use ...

N2 - Methamphetamine use is strongly associated with risky sex and increased reports of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections among gay and bisexual men (GBM) who attend dance/circuit parties. The psychological mechanisms underlying methamphetamine use in this subculture, however, remain unclear. These exploratory findings are from a 2004 dataset measuring body dissatisfaction and drug use among 42 HIV-positive GBM in South Florida who attended at least one bar/club/circuit party within 3 months of participating. A multivariate regression model revealed that body dissatisfaction accounted for a small but significant amount of variance in methamphetamine use. Treatment implications and recommendations for future research are ...
Columbia Universitys Mailman School of Public Health brings to light a population-based study for the first time, which provides evidence of formal diagnoses based on established psychiatric criteria rather than just surveying those who have had some symptoms.. The study results showed that more than 15% of gay or bisexual men had at some time suffered anorexia, bulimia or binge-eating disorder, or at least certain symptoms of those disorders compared with less than five percent of heterosexual men.. Although the findings in women reported no differences in rates of eating disorders between lesbian/bisexual women and heterosexual women, rates of eating disorders of lesbian/bisexual women did not differ significantly from gay/bisexual men.. This information suggests that gay women are not less likely to suffer from eating disorders as some previous researchers have suggested. ...

This entry focuses on recent psychological theory and research on sexual orientation and lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) issues, mostly from English-language journals and conducted in North America using quantitative methods. Unless authors have specifically used LGB, the term sexual minorities is used throughout because it is more inclusive and makes no assumptions about peoples self-labels. Also, the extant research tends to use broadly constituted samples and emphasizes common experiences related to minority status, even though the experiences of lesbians, gay men, and bisexual men and women vary substantially. Transgender issues are sometimes included with sexual orientation concerns (i.e., LGBT), but this article does not explicitly include gender-related expectations, diversity, and links to anatomical sex. Some research on bisexuality is included, although work with this focus is less common. Sexual orientation can be defined in multiple ways-most commonly, definitions focus on a) ...

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 19, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Gay and bisexual men in the United States have higher skin cancer rates than heterosexual men, while bisexual women have lower rates than heterosexual women, according to a new study.. Researchers from Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston analyzed data culled from national surveys conducted from 2014 to 2018 and found that skin cancer rates were 8.1% among gay men, 8.4% among bisexual men, and 6.7% among heterosexual men.. Rates were 4.7% among bisexual women, 5.9% among lesbian women, and 6.6% among heterosexual women. The difference in rates between lesbian women and heterosexual women was not statistically significant, according to the researchers.. These findings could be important for patient education and community outreach programs to reduce skin cancer risk, the study authors said.. Why is pregnancy prevention important for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) youth? Actually, research tells us that the majority of adult lesbian and bisexual women have had heterosexual intercourse at some point in their lives, (Johnson, 1987). Moreover, at least 30% have been pregnant, (Ryan, 1988).. Lesbian and bisexual teens might have heterosexual experiences for a number of reasons, including curiosity, wanting to hide or change their sexual identity, or as a result of rape. Findings from a study published in Family Planning Perspectives (Sexual Intercourse, Abuse and Pregnancy Among Adolescent Women: Does Sexual Orientation Make a Difference?, Saewyc et al., 1999) indicate that reproductive health care providers should not assume that pregnant teenagers are heterosexual, or that teens who identify as bisexual, or lesbian, or are unsure of their sexual orientation do not need family planning counseling.. The study also highlights a need for health ...
Le Ménage moderne du Madame Butterfly is a bisexual, hardcore pornographic film from France. It is notable for being the earliest known adult film to incorporate bisexual and homosexual intercourse. Bernard Natan was a Romanian Jew who is claimed to have produced, directed and acted in at least one hardcore heterosexual pornographic film prior to 1920. In that year, at the end of World War I, Natan emigrated to France. Between 1920 and 1927, a group of at least 20 porn films appeared, sometimes attributed to Natan due to their internal coherence (a prolific number of films, considering the period and technology). Several of these films included homosexual and bisexual oral and anal intercourse, and Natan himself engaged in homosexual and bisexual sex on film. Le Menage Moderne Du Madame Butterfly is one the earliest pornographic films attributed to Natan, and the first of these works to depict homosexuality and bisexuality. Although the release date is uncertain, scholars believe the film was ...

At the beginning of the 20th century, early theoretical discussions in the field of psychoanalysis posited original bisexuality in human psychological development. Quantitative studies by Alfred Kinsey in the 1940s and Dr. Fritz Kleins sexual orientation grid in the 1980s find distributions similar to those postulated by their predecessors.. Many modern studies, most notably Sexual Behavior in the Human Male and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female by Alfred Kinsey, have found that the majority of humans have had homosexual experiences or sensations and are bisexual. Contemporary scientific research suggests that the majority of the human population is bisexual, adhering to a fluid sexual scale rather than a category, as Western society typically views sexual nature. The Kinsey Reports found that approximately four percent of adult Americans were exclusively homosexual for their entire lives, and approximately 10 percent were homosexual in their behaviour for some portion of their lives. ...
Poster presentation: STI incidence among MSM following HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis: a modeling study. A joint modeling study by The Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that for gay and bisexual men, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention, along with testing for and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STI), can reduce not only HIV, but also some STIs, even in the presence of some reductions in condom usage. These findings were presented today at the 2017 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Seattle. CDC recommends that people who use PrEP for HIV prevention be tested for bacterial STIs at least once every six months, even if they do not have symptoms, as part of PrEP care. Antibiotic medication can cure some STIs and reduce their spread. CDC estimates that approximately 492,000 sexually active gay and bisexual men in America are at substantial risk for HIV ...
Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Asylum Claimants. This article draws upon psychological and sociological literature to explore the issues that arise in eliciting and presenting a refugee narrative when the claim is based upon sexual orientation. Rigid notions of homosexual identity may consciously or subconsciously shape decision-makers approaches in this field. First, we identify psycho-social issues of particular significance to lesbian, gay and bisexual claimants which may act as barriers to eliciting their narrative of self-identity, including: a reluctance to reveal group membership as the basis of a claim, the experience of passing or concealment strategies, the impact of shame and depression on memory, common experience of sexual assault, and sexualization of the identity narrative in the legal process. Secondly, we explore factors which inhibit the reception of such narratives in the legal process. In particular we explore the psychological stage model of sexual identity development and ...
Several lines of evidence indicate the existence of genetic factors influencing male homosexuality and bisexuality. In spite of its relatively low frequency, the stable permanence in all human populations of this apparently detrimental trait constitutes a puzzling Darwinian paradox. Furthermore, several studies have pointed out relevant asymmetries in the distribution of both male homosexuality and of female fecundity in the parental lines of homosexual vs. heterosexual males. A number of hypotheses have attempted to give an evolutionary explanation for the long-standing persistence of this trait, and for its asymmetric distribution in family lines; however a satisfactory understanding of the population genetics of male homosexuality is lacking at present. We perform a systematic mathematical analysis of the propagation and equilibrium of the putative genetic factors for male homosexuality in the population, based on the selection equation for one or two diallelic loci and Bayesian statistics ...
Among MSM in Peru, HIV and syphilis prevalence and HIV incidence were high, especially among cross-dressers. The high prevalence of bisexuality and low rates of consistent condom use, especially with female sexual partners indicates potential HIV transmission into the heterosexual population.
In September 2008, Fox alluded to being bisexual in an interview with GQ magazine. She said that, when she was 18 years old, she fell in love with and sought to establish a relationship with a female stripper. She used this experience to illustrate her belief that all humans are born with the ability to be attracted to both sexes and additionally showed interest in Olivia Wilde. In May 2009, she confirmed her bisexuality. In the June 2009 issue of ELLE, however, she stated that she somewhat distorted the events of her relationship with the stripper, saying she has given certain male writers an amped-up version of her past. Theyre boys; theyre easily toyed with, she said. I tell stories and have them eating out of my hand. Not all of it is true. In fact, most of it is bullshit. Fox said, I never said she was my girlfriend! I just said that I loved her, and I did love her. The real story is more sobering. Its not a sexy, fun-time, fantasy story. But thats not the story you tell GQ ...
I caught this series months after its cancellation and mostly in preparation for Matt Ryan reprising his role in Arrows fourth season (yay Nyssa/Curtis/alive Sara). Constantine as a series itself was actually pretty enjoyable for the most part but the shows decision to literally ignore the characters bisexuality (something which the latest comics have been more proud of depicting) infuriated me to no end and highlighted a horrible pattern with David S. Goyer as well (DaVincis Demons, anyone?). Not to mention some of Daniel Cerones comments on the issue were similarly annoying as well as patronising. Its kind of a shame the show only lasted a season but the writers decision not to have John as an openly bisexual character was met with deserved criticism. I can only hope the more the character pops up in the Arrow universe, the more the writers for those shows will go where Goyer/Cerone failed to go with the character ...
In the case of lesbianism, it may be Maternal stress and insulin resistance. Insulin resistance will result in adrenal glands making excessive testosterone (insulin sensitivity in the adrenal is necessary to turn off testosterone synthesis). The adrenal gland is a major source of testosterone for fetus prenatally, and people who are insulin resistant may overproduce adrenal testosterone. This also explains the high rates of weight problems in lesbian women, as there is a relationship between insulin signalling/obesity/adrenal androgens. A very common female reproductive disorder is PCOS, which is caused by an overproduction of androgens from ovaries and in 50% of cases the adrenal glands. Lesbian and bisexualism is much higher in women with PCOS than the general population, probably because this disorder (which causes very high testosterone) also was active and influencing brain development prenatally or early post natally. The woman has a brain that has been influenced by testosterone and so is ...
But he hadnt discovered Louie or any other comedian; he had been filling out a web form, and came to the section for gender. And the options on the form were Male, Female, and Other. First: Tantra says that no man is just man and no woman is just woman, each man is both man and woman, and so is each woman - woman and man. Adam has Eve in him, and Eve has Adam in her. In fact, nobody is just Adam and nobody is just Eve: we are Adam-Eves. This is one of the greatest insights ever attained.. Modern depth psychology has become aware of it. They call it bisexuality. But, for at least five thousand years, Tantra has known it, preached it, It is one of the greatest discoveries of the world because with this understanding you can move in your inner direction, otherwise you cannot move in your inner direction. Why does a man fall in love with a woman? - Because he carries a woman inside him, otherwise he would not fall in love, And why do you fall in love with a certain woman? There are thousands of women. But why, suddenly, does a certain woman become most important to you, as if all other women had disappeared and that were the only woman in the world. Why? Why does a certain man ...

HIV PJA: What was your first reaction hearing about this study at CROI and the 12.1% incidence rate?. Charles Stephens: Ive been hearing statistics like this, doom and gloom, my entire life. Initially, it was about gun violence, drugs, or incarceration. Then it was about HIV. Unfortunately, the counter to this is often rooted in incentivizing and affirming various kinds of institutional assimilation, representative of pictures of black kids getting into Harvard.. This talented-tenthism reproduces a kind of mythology that institutional access, no matter how limited, is an example of collective social uplift. I think its very dizzying, these simplistic depictions (statistics are a form of representation too) that as black men we get shoved into. And HIV statistics also paint both a very clear, but also very narrow picture of what it means to be a black gay man, and certainly a young black gay/bisexual man in this culture today. It can feel very overwhelming.. HIV PJA: The research that came ...
HIV-negative and never-tested gay and bisexual men overestimate the implications of living with HIV even if - as it is - HIV is already a manageable and treatable chronic health condition with effective and well-tolerated antiretroviral therapy (ART). This is according to a study conducted by researchers from the HIV Transmission Elimination Amsterdam Initiative, which found that - specifically - many overestimated the psychosocial implications, health-related consequences, burden of disclosure, impact on sex and relationships, and practical consequences of HIV. Published in the journal AIDS and Behavior, the study - The Burden of Living With HIV is Mostly Overestimated by HIV-Negative and Never-Tested Men Who Have Sex With Men - was done by Hanne M. L. Introduction and Summary. A growing body of research suggests that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are more likely to be poor than are heterosexual people with the same characteristics.1 These studies show that lesbian and bisexual women are especially vulnerable to poverty, as are LGB people of color. One reason for these differences could be that women and people of color face wage gaps when compared to men or to white people. Lower wages mean lower incomes, increasing the risk of a household falling below the federal poverty line, which is based on income.. This report uses data on same-sex couples in the 2012 American Community Survey to assess the impact on LGB and heterosexual poverty rates of several types of hypothetical changes: one that reduces the gender wage gap between men and women, one that reduces the wage gaps for people of color (the gap between white and black workers and the gap between Hispanic and non-Hispanic workers), and one that reduces the wage ...
Few studies from the United Kingdom have fully investigated inequalities between members of different sexual minority groups and heterosexuals over range of health outcomes. Using data from over 40,000 individuals, this study explores the health inequalities of sexual minority UK adults. We include respondents who identify as other and those who prefer not to say (PNS). Data come from wave three (2011-2012) of the nationally-representative Understanding Society, the UK Household Longitudinal Study. Sexual orientation was asked in the self-completion portion of the study. Markers of health include physical and mental functioning, minor psychological distress, self-rated health, substance use and disability. Multiple linear and logistic regression analyses tested for differences in markers of health between sexual orientation groups. Overall, heterosexual respondents had the best health while bisexual respondents had the worst. Gay and lesbian respondents reported poorer health than heterosexuals, ...

There was a time in my life where we had a very troubled experience in our family. My brother, Henry, he died tragically when we were teenagers. We lived in New York City, as I said. We lived in the Bronx at the time, and the burial was in a place called Long Island, it was about two hours outside of the city. And as we were preparing to come back from the burial, the cars stopped at the bathroom to let folks take care of themselves before the long ride back to the city. And the limousine empties out. My mother, my sister, my auntie, they all get out, but my father and I stayed in the limousine, and no sooner than the women got out, he burst out crying. He didnt want cry in front of me, but he knew he wasnt going to make it back to the city, and it was better me than to allow himself to express these feelings and emotions in front of the women.
