Determining optimal surveillance networks for an emerging pathogen is difficult since it is not known beforehand what the characteristics of a pathogen will be or where it will emerge. The resources for surveillance of infectious diseases in animals and wildlife are often limited and mathematical modeling can play a supporting role in examining a wide range of scenarios of pathogen spread. We demonstrate how a hierarchy of mathematical and statistical tools can be used in surveillance planning help guide successful surveillance and mitigation policies for a wide range of zoonotic pathogens. The model forecasts can help clarify the complexities ofmore » potential scenarios, and optimize biosurveillance programs for rapidly detecting infectious diseases. Using the highly pathogenic zoonotic H5N1 avian influenza 2006-2007 epidemic in Nigeria as an example, we determined the risk for infection for localized areas in an outbreak and designed biosurveillance stations that are effective for different ...

Health speaker Laurie Garrett will talk about an important matter of national health and security at the major NDIA Biosurveillance Conference, in Washington, at the end of August. Garrett, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, will open the concerence, focusing on the shortfalls and inadequacies of our nations biosurveillance procedures-a key topic that has been front page news several times this past year. The issues facing our national program include: lack of funding and actionable information, gaps in communcation and collaboration between local and global teams, and the absence of federal responsiveness needed to implement things effectively. As part of the conference, Garrett will have a chance to argue if the system will be better prepared by the year 2017, and what we need to do in order to be in such a position ...

Trends such as rising global population, changes in the environment, and the growing accessibility of tools for genetic engineering mean that our armed forces are increasingly likely to face new bacterial pathogens, whether they occur naturally or are engineered by adversaries, Paul Sheehan, the program manager for the Friend or Foe technology, said. Our existing biosurveillance strategies dont work on previously undiscovered bacteria or on bacteria that have been specifically designed to evade detection by current tests. We need new screening tools that can quickly characterize the threat to enable a rapid response ...

BioSense is a US national system that uses data from health information systems for automated disease surveillance. We studied 4 time-series algorithm modifications designed to improve sensitivity for detecting artificially added data. To test these modified algorithms, we used reports of daily syndrome visits from 308 Department of Defense (DoD) facilities and 340 hospital emergency departments (EDs). At a constant alert rate of 1%, sensitivity was improved for both datasets by using a minimum standard deviation (SD) of 1.0, a 14-28 day baseline duration for calculating mean and SD, and an adjustment for total clinic visits as a surrogate denominator. Stratifying baseline days into weekdays versus weekends to account for day-of-week effects increased sensitivity for the DoD data but not for the ED data. These enhanced methods may increase sensitivity without increasing the alert rate and may improve the ability to detect outbreaks by using automated surveillance system data.
Simply stated, situational awareness is being aware of what is going on around you and using your experiences and intuition to be more aware of the risks and to prevent or mitigate potential incidents. While our campuses are very safe, situational awareness is very important and can be used anytime, anywhere, including off campus. There are a number of steps you can take to increase your personal safety by honing your situational awareness skills.. Situational awareness and personal safety Electronic distractions: Whether its being completely absorbed by your phone, walking and texting or listening to music, using electronic devices can seriously impair your ability to be aware of what is happening around you. Look up occasionally to scan your surroundings and if youre using headphones, consider using only one or keeping the volume low enough to still be able to hear what is happening around you.. Scan: Most people automatically scan new situations or environments, but dont always focus on ...

There is a chance that a suitable environment for this virus was found in a pig farm where animals are housed in extreme confinement. According to Biosurveillance, from February through April, there was a dramatic increase in acute respiratory infections in La Gloria, a small town in Veracruz. Nearly 60% of the small towns population was affected. As Biosurveillance warns, there is no epidemiological evidence to link the farm to the current swine-avian-human virus. That there is a correlation between the pig farm and the sudden spike in respiratory infections means just that. No causation has yet been established. It seems fair to point out that pigs, particularly those raised in intense confinement, can serve as an intermediary host, helping to spawn a virus that contains avian, human and pig genes....allowing for zoonosis, or a disease that can cross species ...

Political change flows from shared awareness. If one million people have acute situational awareness but remain isolated in their insight, then nothing happens on a political scale. When those same one million people become aware that a million others share their situational awareness and the understanding that the other million people are also aware of each other being on board, then a political movement is possible. The stock market is an interesting example of this phenomenon. Small investors (so-called retail investors) have been exiting the U.S. stock market for 34 straight weeks, pulling almost $100 billion out of the market. They are voting with their feet based on their situational awareness that the game is rigged, and that the rigging alone greatly increases the risks of another meltdown.
In an effort to improve situational awareness down to the squad leader level, the U.S. Marines Corps and Army intend to provide the next-generation situational awareness software on ruggedized handheld platforms similar to smart phones or personal digital assistants. The Joint Battle Command-Platform is the second increment of Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below software that was fielded more than a decade ago. The new platform is intended to provide integrated, on-the-move, timely, relevant command and control and situational awareness information at all echelons, enabling units to become more survivable and lethal. It also will improve combat effectiveness, reduce risk of fratricide, improve latency, security and interoperability within the joint environment, and provide an integrated network with increased bandwidth and a more user-friendly interface.
Early detection of outdoor aerosol releases of anthrax is an important problem. The Bayesian Aerosol Release Detector (BARD) is a system for detecting releases of aerosolized anthrax and characterizing them in terms of location, time and quantity. Modelling a populations exposure to aerosolized anthrax poses a number of challenges. A major difficulty is to accurately estimate the exposure level--the number of inhaled anthrax spores--of each individual in the exposed region. Partly, this difficulty stems from the lack of fine-grained data about the population under surveillance. To cope with this challenge, nearly all anthrax biosurveillance systems, including BARD, ignore the mobility of the population and assume that exposure to anthrax would occur at ones home administrative unit--an assumption that limits the fidelity of the model ...

The authors of the 2013 report, Improving Self-Escape from Underground Coal Mines, identified the need to empower miners to self-escape during a mine emergency. The report put forth numerous recommendations, including the need to accelerate wayfinding technology efforts that enhance situational awareness and self-escape. Currently, self-escape technologies include signage for marking escapeways and lifelines, but these technologies have major limitations as currently applied in mining. Lifeline technology consists of a rope with directional cones that is not visible during smoke-filled mine conditions, so there is a need to improve lifeline visibility. Lastly, the need to enhance situational awareness extends to non-emergency situations involving the hazards associated with roof bolting machines.. To address these needs, this project had three research aims, as follows:. ...

With the rapid development and broad applications of next-generation sequencing platforms and bioinformatic analytical tools, genomics has become a popular area for biosurveillance and international scientific collaboration. Governments from countries including the United States (US), Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom have leveraged these advancements to support international cooperative programs that aim to reduce biological threats and build scientific capacity worldwide. A recent conference panel addressed the impacts of the enhancement of genomic sequencing capabilities through three major US bioengagement programs on international scientific engagement and biosecurity risk reduction. The panel contrasted the risks and benefits of supporting the enhancement of genomic sequencing capabilities through international scientific engagement to achieve biological threat reduction and global health security. The lower costs and new bioinformatic tools available have led to the greater application of
Put simply, situational awareness (SA) means appreciating all you need to know about what is going on when the full scope of your task - flying, controlling or maintaining an aircraft - is taken into account. More specifically and in the context of complex operational environments, SA is concerned with the persons knowledge of particular task-related events and phenomena. For example, for a fighter pilot SA means knowing about the threats and intentions of enemy forces as well as the status of his/her own aircraft. For an air traffic controller, SA means (at least partly) knowing about current aircraft positions and flight plans and predicting future states so as to detect possible conflicts. Therefore, in operational terms, SA means having an understanding of the current state and dynamics of a system and being able to anticipate future change and developments. A general definition of SA is that it is the perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the ...

Safety and security applications benefit from better situational awareness. Radar micro-Doppler signatures from an observed target carry information about the targets activity, and have potential to improve situational awareness. This article describes, compares, and discusses two methods to classify human activity based on radar micro-Doppler data. The first method extracts physically interpretable features from the time-velocity domain such as the main cycle time and properties of the envelope of the micro-Doppler spectra and use these in the classification. The second method derives its features based on the components with the most energy in the cadence-velocity domain (obtained as the Fourier transform of the time-velocity domain). Measurements from a field trial show that the two methods have similar activity classification performance. It is suggested that target base velocity and main limb cadence frequency are indirect features of both methods, and that they do often alone suffice to ...

Q: How does MovNat training prepare me for Combatives?. Generally speaking, good movers make great fighters. Whereas movement abilities are not the only aspect that matters in your ability to defend yourself - situational awareness and raw aggressiveness are actually more important - a better mover learns faster, moves faster, more accurately, more technically, more adaptively. The mental aspect of MovNat practice also supports alertness and responsiveness which are mental qualities essential to defending oneself. A MovNatter is more mindful, knows how to breathe and move in so many diverse ways. Thats definitely a great start and advantage.. Q: How strong do I need to be? How do I need to train ahead of time to get the most out of it?. The short answer is that you dont need any training or to have achieved a certain fitness level to participate in a MovNat Combatives event. One of the reasons for this is because a lot of the strength you need in self-defense is mental. Of course, physical ...

We monitor upwards of 15 species of such parasites from blood and fecal samples by light microscopy and targeted PCR. When a population is at risk, we will know early based on obvious gains/losses, or fluctuations, in the natural parasite assemblage. Everyone else looking for the fast and rare hare is likely to miss it more than anything else.
