1 INTRODUCTION. The aim of modern dentistry is restore contour, function, esthetic, speech, and oral health, regardless of atrophy, disease, or injury of the stomatognatic system [1]. However, the more teeth a patient is missing, more difficult is the treatment and the results are unexpected with traditional dentistry. Current trends in clinical dental implant therapy include use of endosseous dental implants.. The high success rate of titanium dental implants has been attributed to formation of a direct bone-implant interface with no intervening soft tissues [2]. However, treatment of jaws with advanced resorption and poor bone quality presents a high rate of implant failure. One way to decrease this clinical problem is to use a dental implant with a treated surface. It has been suggested that physiochemical and dielectric properties, ...

Some perks of titanium dental implants include:. Zirconium:. If your body is allergic to titanium, zirconium will be the alternate dental implant material for you. Zirconium is made from ceramic and is free from metals, which is why it acts as a better alternative for those people allergic to titanium. Even though zirconium is a safe option for patients, they are relatively weaker than titanium dental implants. Unlike titanium dental implants, zirconium is easily susceptible to break, therefore you need to be extra careful when you are using this type of dental implant.. Deal with your dental implant specialist and seek advice from them, if you are unsure about making a choice. In most cases, you would be qualified for and the final decision would be made on the basis of your situation.. In Home and Direct ...

PMID: 17066633 Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare insertion torque and resonance frequency analysis of different implant systems in an animal model with loaded implants. Materials and Methods: Three types of Br nemark implants (machined MkIII, TiUnite MkIII, and MkIV) and 2 types of Straumann implants (sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched [SLA] and titanium plasma-sprayed [TPS]) were studied. Thirty-two implants of each type (n = 160) were placed in 16 beagle dogs. Maximum insertion torque values were recorded. After a healing period of 8 weeks, the implants were loaded for 3 months; the animals were then sacrificed. At placement, after healing, and at the end of the loading phase, resonance frequency analysis was performed and implant stability quotients (ISQs) were recorded. Results: Higher insertion torque values were seen for the conical MkIV ...

One of the most important factors for long-term success of dental implants is the maintenance of healthy peri-implant tissues. In todays market, patients are more keen to have implant-borne prostheses than a conventional fixed or removable prosthesis. Therefore it is very important that all underlying dental disease is treated or stabilised before implant therapy can commence. This is of great importance when dealing with patients who are susceptible to periodontal disease - this group of patients has an increased susceptibility to peri-implantitis (1).. Peri-implantitis has been associated with oral pathogens, which are comparable to those associated with periodontal disease (2). Placing dental implants in partially dentate patients leads to the formation of a biofilm which has a different ecology to that of edentulous patients. Placing ...

DOI: 10.11607/jomi.3234 Purpose: Elevated bite forces and reduced bone densities and dimensions associated with posterior regions of the maxilla cause relatively high failure rates when short dental implants are placed to substitute missing teeth. This study uses the finite element method to evaluate four distinctly different short implant designs (Bicon, Neodent, Nobel Biocare, and Straumann) for their influences on the von Mises stress characteristics within the posterior maxilla. Materials and Methods: Finite element models of the supporting bone and tooth crowns are developed based on computed tomography data, and implant geometries are obtained from manufacturers catalogs. The finite element models are meshed using three-dimensional hexahedral and wedge-shaped brick elements. Assumptions made in the analyses are: linear elastic material properties for bone, 50% osseointegration between bone and implant, and crown height ...

Objectives: Repeted abutment connection and disconnections compromize the connective and epithelial sealing around implant components, leading to peri-implant bone remodeling (Abrahamsson, 1997). Placing the definitive abutment at the time of implant placement might be a treatment option to minimize this biological rupture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-shaped zirconium abutments for immediate implant loading in the anterior maxilla. Peri-implantitis is an infectious disease that resides in the mucosa surrounding dental implants and also affects the supporting bone. Because the number of implants placed in everyday clinical practice is continuously increasing, it is reasonable to anticipate an increasing prevalence of peri-implantitis. However, from the literature there is very little reliable evidence suggesting which could be the most effective interventions for treating peri-implantitis.. The primary objective of this controlled clinical study is to evaluate the microbiological effect of decontamination of the implant surface during the surgical treatment of peri-implantitis using a chlorhexidine or placebo solution. The secondary objectives are to assess both the clinical and the microbiological effectiveness of treatment of peri-implantitis.. It is hypothesized that rinsing of the ...

BACKGROUND: Clinical experience suggests that component impingement can lead to eccentric implant loading and thereby cause glenoid loosening in conventional total shoulder arthroplasty. This study tests the hypothesis that certain implant component positioning configurations may lead to impingement within the physiological range of motion. METHODS: A rigid-body model of the shoulder comprising the scapula and humerus was constructed. Within this 3D model, a commercially available total shoulder arthroplasty implant was positioned according to manufacturer guidelines. The configuration was modified around this default position to investigate the associated angle of inferior and superior impingement during glenohumeral elevation, as well as in lateral impingement during axial rotation at both 0 degrees and 60 degrees of glenohumeral elevation. Glenoid component size, version, inclination and inferior-superior offset as well as humeral ...

PMID: 18437794 Purpose: A systematic review, including meta-analysis, was conducted to answer the question Does the type of implant prosthesis affect outcomes for the completely edentulous arch? The current paper was to assess the impact of fixed or removable prosthesis type on implant survival and success outcomes. Materials and Methods: Pertinent literature was identified through December 31, 2005 using a PubMed search strategy and hand-searching of relevant journals, a personal library, and reference lists from included studies. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to the titles and abstracts and subsequently to the full text of included references. The 72 included studies reported oral implant survival or success, crestal bone levels or loss, and/or prosthesis success or maintenance differentiated by arch and by prosthesis type (fixed or removable, splinted or nonsplinted) established either in 1-year randomized clinical trials or 5-year ...

Aim: To demonstrate two cases in which mini-implant supported orthodontic molar intrusion has been performed to regain ideal crown height space for implant prosthesis. Background: Tooth loss is associated with esthetic, functional and psychological consequences on an individual. Replacement of missing teeth by dental implants has gained significant importance due to promising advantages of implants over conventional prosthesis. Edentulism often results in supra-eruption of antagonistic teeth into the edentulous site resulting in reduced vertical dimension for tooth replacement, posing a restorative challenge for clinicians. Hence, it is necessary to regain the lost vertical dimension prior to the implant prosthesis, either conventionally by endodontic and prosthetic intervention or by orthodontic intrusion with the aid of Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs). Mini-implants are a category of ...

Commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) dental implants have been widely and successfully used with high rates of clinical success in normal situations. However, there is still a lack of reliable synthetic materials to be used either a) when immediate loading of the implant is desired or b) when bone presents compromised conditions due to trauma, infection, systemic disease and/or lack of significant bone volume. Our group has aimed the development of biomimetic strategies of surface modification to obtain metallic implants with osteostimulative capabilities. These surface modifications will provide implants with a rapid rate of newly-formed bone growth and with ossecoalescence, i.e., direct chemical contact with the surrounding tissues. Consequently, the biomimetically-modified implants will be reliably used on those more demanding clinical situations. cp Ti surfaces treated to obtain a ...
Immediate Loading Protocols , Determining Primary Stability » Interview conducted by Gary J. Kaplowitz, DDS, MA, MEd, ABGD. OsseoNews (ON): In your protocol you connect the provisional fixed partial complete denture to the abutments that have been permanently torqued down into the implant fixtures. What is your technique for accomplishing this?. Dr. Balshi: After the abutments are torque down, we insert a prosthetic cylinder over the abutment. We then screw down the cylinder with guide pins which project well above the height of the cylinders. We relieve the prosthesis in the area of the abutment and cylinder and cover the abutments with rubber dam fragments to block out any undercuts. We then deliver acrylic around the cylinders and insert the prosthesis. The acrylic locks the cylinder into the acrylic veneer. We unscrew the guide pins and then adjust and polish the surface of the prosthesis. The prosthesis is then ready for delivery.. ON: How do you manage ...
Imagine this: A dental surgeon is performing a thorough examination of your mouth to check for your suitability for implant treatment. The surgeon rotates your jaw from side to side and up and down, looking for the optimal sites in which to place dental implants - and their proper size, shape and orientation. He is testing several alternatives, considering the underlying anatomical structures, and the bone density and quality that the examination reveals. Finally, a surgical plan is developed: This includes a set of precise specifications for implant position, size and depth, and a template for creating a perfectly fitting set of replacement teeth. But no invasive procedures of any type have been performed so far. In fact, you arent even present.. Welcome to the world of computer-guided dental implant surgery. What we have described is one step in the process that allows you to receive a set ...

There is a growing interest in minimally invasive implant therapy as a standard prosthodontic treatment, providing complete restoration of occlusal function. A new treatment method (CADDIMA), which combines both computerized tomographic (CT) and optical laser-scan data for planning and design of surgical guides, implant abutments, and prosthetic devices, is described. Imaging using a "NewTom 3G" cone beam CT scanner and a modified laser triangulation scanner "D200c" is discussed, as are impression and surgical guide fabrication, which allow for flapless, precise implant placement and an accurate provisional prosthesis. The new approach gives the operator full control over the design of the implant prosthesis for planning of proper occlusal relations and shows promise for further evaluation ...

Minimally-invasive surgery can offer patients many positive outcomes including less pain, shorter recovery time and a shorter length of stay in the hospital. Laparoscopic surgery is used for many different types of treatment. With this type of surgery, a surgeon places a camera inside a patients body through several small incisions. This way, there is a smaller incision for the patient, but the surgeon can still see the way he or she could through a larger incision. Robotic surgery is on the leading edge of surgical care. Surgeons use computer-guided tools to operate with unparalleled precision, dexterity and control enabling complex surgical procedures with smaller incisions. Spartanburg Regional offers many options for minimally-invasive surgery including, but not limited to, the below. ...

Dr. Yaron A. Moshel recently joined Atlantic NeuroSurgical Specialists, 310 Madison Ave., in Morristown. Moshel is known in the medical community for his approach to removing brain tumors and uses technology including computer-guided navigation, awake functional brain mapping, endoscopy, and microsurgery. There are only a select few surgeons nationally who specialize in removing some of these deep-seated brain tumors. “Many surgeons are hesitant to remove a tumor if it’s too close to eloquent brain structures that control vision, language, body movements, or other higher cognitive powers that would result in a significant loss of function,” says Moshel. “My approach is different. I map out critical structures of the brain to avoid these areas. By doing this, I am able to remove all or most of the tumor otherwise considered inoperable. This makes a huge difference in the patient’s outcome.” Moshel is the 11th neurosurgeon on staff for the practice and joins the
The development of Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) has proven extremely beneficial in the treatment of head and neck cancers. Using computer-guided, pinpoint precision, the radiation is delivered in higher doses without significant damage to surrounding tissue.. Technological advances in imaging, such as 3-D MRI, provide a picture that almost dissects the tumor and surrounding tissues. This is essential in providing exact direction for treatment. PET scans are used routinely to complete staging of your cancer. Sentinel node biopsies are performed on patients meeting nationally determined guidelines (during surgery) that help determine the spread of head and neck cancers and melanoma.. Support ...
Chagas disease (CD) is a neglected disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which affects underdeveloped countries. The current drugs of choice are nifurtimox and benznidazole, but both have severe adverse effects and less effectivity in chronic infections; therefore, the need to discover new drugs is essential. A computer-guided drug repositioning method was applied to identify potential FDA drugs (approved and withdrawn) as cruzain (Cz) inhibitors and trypanocidal effects were confirmed by in vitro and in vivo studies. 3180 FDA drugs were virtually screened using a structure-based approach. From a first molecular docking analysis, a set of 33 compounds with the best binding energies were selected. Subsequent consensus affinity binding, ligand amino acid contact clustering analysis, and ranked position were used to choose four known pharmacological compounds to be tested in vitro. Mouse blood samples infected with trypomastigotes from INC-5 and NINOA strains were used to test the trypanocidal

Goals of the Demonstration Project. The goals of this project are as follows:. Goal 1: To utilize recent technological advances and refine a theory-based, computerized intervention system currently being evaluated in a Birmingham STD clinic. Our proposed interventions will target men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) and will be designed to: increase condom use for specific sexual activities with both main and casual (other) partners; decrease numbers of sexual partners among those reporting multiple partners; and increase the frequency of HIV serostatus disclosure to sexual partners.. Goal 2: To evaluate a computer-guided, theory-based, provider-delivered intervention in the context of standard care in an HIV primary care facility in collaboration with the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS). We will test the following hypotheses after 18 months of follow-up:. Hypothesis 1: That the proportion of HIV-positive MSM reporting 100% condom use with main partners will be significantly increased in ...
There are several common techniques used to construct libraries of functional variants Error-prone PCR Error-prone PCR amplifies wild-type sequences using a polymerase that has an error rate of up to 2%. The PCR can be made error-prone in a number of ways, including increasing the concentration of Mg2+, adding Mn2+, or using unequal concentrations of each nucleotide. After the amplification, the mutant sequences must be cloned. The size of a library generated by error-prone PCR is limited by cloning step. Common mutations resulting from error-prone PCR are point mutations, but deletions and frameshift mutations are also possible. There are a number of commercially available kits for error-prone PCR (link to Stratagene). Similar techniques also use mutagenic primers. Recombination of homologous sequences Computer-guided mutagenesis DNA shuffling ...

Modeling the social interactions of a wolf pack is the goal of the MIT Media Labs Alpha Wolf project. A human player may guide the behavior of a wolf pup as it interacts with other wolf pups and adults, including the titular alpha male himself. The pup learns his place in the pack through a combination of the players interactions and the behavior of the totally computer-guided wolves. The player interactions are limited to enticing the pup to bark, howl, or growl at a target wolf. Depending on the attitude of the other wolf, the result may be aggression, play, submission, or a number of other behaviors. The pup will remember the results of the encounters, and may act accordingly the next time it encounters that wolf. As with many good artificial intelligence systems, several wolves together are fun to watch without any player intervention at all. The subtle but effective black-and-white cartoon rendering portrays each pups emotions well, so the player is almost never confused about the mood ...
Clinicians very often have seen marginal bone loss around dental implants at the crest level early on after implant placement and uncovering. Early clinical publications had suggested that this bone loss occurred during the first year of loading. Thus, numerous attempts have been made to minimize or eliminate such bone loss. However, the timing and reason for this bone loss are not always apparent. The objective of this study was to review the evidence regarding marginal bone loss around dental implants from the standpoint of biologic consequences to help understand marginal bone changes around dental implants. One hypothesis for the bone loss around these implants was related to the presence of bacteria in the interfaces between the implant and abutment connections. The literature was reviewed regarding the three major types of ...

Many archaeological bones display a heterogeneous degradation pattern. Highly degraded bones could contain pockets of well-preserved bone, harbouring good quality DNA. This dichotomy may explain why the relationships between global bone preservation parameters such as histological integrity, bone mineral crystallinity or collagen yield, and bulk DNA preservation/amplification success rate have been found to be at best, weak to moderate. In this pilot study, we explore whether or not a more localised approach will highlight a stronger relationship between diagenetic parameters and DNA preservation. This study includes a detailed histological characterisation of bone diagenesis in sub-areas of three bone samples. Regions of the same bone, which displayed differential degrees of preservation or type of diagenesis were sampled for further analysis and both genetic (small scale Illumina MiSeq sequencing) and chemical (Fourier-transform infrared spectrometric analysis) analyses were performed. The aim ...

In contrast, the guidelines from NAMS encourage androgen co-therapy. The authors of the NAMS position state: "Although data are limited, there is consistent evidence that in postmenopausal women with sexual concerns, adding either oral or non-oral testosterone to estrogen therapy results in a positive effect on sexual function, primarily an increase in sexual desire. Data are inadequate to support the therapeutic use of testosterone for any other indication, including bone preservation, menopause symptoms, well-being, body composition or cognition. ... In selecting postmenopausal women for testosterone therapy, clinical factors are generally of much greater importance than serum hormone levels, especially given the relative unreliability of most clinically available testosterone assays for women and the multiple causes of sexual desire disorders.". The discrepancy between these two committees has been thought to be due to (26): 1. The Endocrine Society committee concluded that one cannot make a ...
Both hard and soft tissue undergo change after tooth extraction. In particular, the bone tissue surrounding teeth with fenestration or dehiscence defects undergoes dramatic change following tooth extraction, which can compromise further rehabilitation of the area. Adequate alveolar bone volume and keratinized mucosa are critical to the success of implant therapy. Therefore, the anatomic dimension of the alveolar ridge must be adequate to achieve an esthetically acceptable outcome of implant therapy. Previous studies have proposed many clinical techniques for preserving the extraction socket. This article presents a procedure in which an open collagen membrane technique was adopted to maintain an adequate volume of hard tissue and a sufficient width of the keratinized mucosa for further esthetic and functional implantation. Through this simple technique, an adequate volume and architecture around the implant can be achieved, with a long-term ...

Following the loss of teeth, the alveolar bone formed in response to the eruption of the teeth is gradually resorbed by the body. In conventional dental implant therapy, a wide safety margin of uninterrupted healing (3-6 months) following placement of the implants is used to assure a predictable survival of the implants (on the order of , 90%). In the past few years, there have been multiple studies documenting with improved implant surface technologies available, that dental implants can be put into function far sooner than conventionally thought. The investigators are currently performing recalls on subjects treated in a research protocol at the University of Iowa (YAOSS-0001; IRB 200305001). Since this initial study, a shortened version of the implant device has been developed and has obtained FDA clearance (FDA 510k 063779 clearance letter dated April 27, 2007) for a 4mm ...
The sample was representative of all the sectors that provide the oral implantology service in Jordan, and it was clear from the results that young practitioners had more interest in oral implantology and slightly less than half of the service providers were specialists with postgraduate degrees, most of them work in the private sector and many were interested in continuous education. Similar findings related to the increased interest of young generations in oral implantology had been found in other studies in Hong Kong [1] and Switzerland [34].. Antibiotics prescribing was influenced by flap raising, number of implants inserted, the timing of implant insertion in the presence or absence of active infection, bone augmentation and sinus lifting procedures. Although no evidence could be found in the literature, the participants in this study had considered the flap type, number of implants and the timing of ...

Debilitating health issues hinder Dental Implants integration (progressive growth of bone which binds to Dental Implants). Uncontrolled diabetes is one of them. Thats not to say the controlled diabetes is better, its just favorable in a case where diabetes is a concern. With diabetes healing is often delayed, which can lead to Dental Implants integration failure. Another major concern for Dental Implants integration is Osteoporosis (loss of bone mass) and more importantly is the current use of Biophosphonate medication to control Osteoporosis. This type of medication causes an over production of bone, not a good thing.. Other critical hindrance to health is smoking. The nicotine, the heat and the additives in cigarettes encumber healing and integration. For example, these properties in cigarettes form a slimy dirty film between the newly placed Dental ...

An orthodontic treatment is not a contraindication to dental implants. However, if a patient with a malocclusion is considering the insertion of dental implants, it is important to consult an orthodontist beforehand. This specialist will determine the best time to proceed with the implantology treatment in order not to impair the orthodontic treatment, as a dental implant cannot be moved with braces.. In addition, an orthodontic treatment may, in some cases, prevent the need for dental implants. The patient will therefore benefit from consulting an orthodontist in the first place!. ...
