The nitrate-removal activity of a biofilm attached to a perlite carrier from an aerobic bioreactor used for treating dairy farm wastewater was examined by batch experiments under continuous aeration conditions. Despite aeration, the biofilm removed nitrate at a rate of 114.4 mg-N/kg-perlite/h from wastewater containing cow milk and manure. Removal of estrogens from water using activated carbon and ozone. (5/35)

Estrogens (estron: E1; estradiol: E2; estriol: E3) are major water pollutants. For the removal of estrogens, activated carbon (AC) and ozone treatments were employed, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and pH of a single solution and multiple solution systems were investigated. The removal of estrogens increased with the amount of AC. The percentage of removed estrogens by AC in the single solution system was greater than that in the ternary solution system. The estrogens were completely removed using ozone, which also reduced COD and pH. The removal of estrogens increased the water quality and decreased the amount of organic carbon.  (+info)

An integrated system comprising coagulation, hydrolysis acidification, and multilevel contact oxidation was evaluated to make the dyeing effluent meet discharge standards. A new spiral biological carrier was first used in the treatment of dyeing wastewater. The chemical oxygen demand (COD), color, and biodegradability index (i.e., biological oxygen demand (BOD)/COD) of raw dyeing wastewater were 5051 mg/L, 404 times, and 0.29, respectively. A method of removing rosin soldering flux or other residues from a printed wiring board comprises directly adding to the wash water which contacts the boards a powdered cleaning composition which comprises water soluble alkaline salts. The method of directly adding the cleaning composition to the water supply in the form of a powder eliminates the need to incorporate organic stabilizers which previously have been required to maintain surfactants and the like in solution in aqueous concentrates. A process is disclosed for treating wastewater from a polymerization process. The wastewater contains volatile residual monomer, for example acrylonitrile monomer. The method includes the steps of pretreating the wastewater with an amount of oxygenated waste activated sludge to reduce the levels of residual monomer in the wastewater stream in order to reduce the volatilization of the volatile residual monomer into the atmosphere during further treatment of the wastewater stream. In this study, we evaluated the impact of treated wastewater effluent from two wastewater treatment plants on the physicochemical parameters and Salmonella spp. load of receiving rivers. Presumptive Salmonella spp. were obtained at all sampled points including the discharge points, with counts ranging from 0 to 4.14 log cfu/mL at both plants. Turbidity, chemical and biological oxygen demand were found to be high and mostly above the required limit for treated wastewater discharge. However, recorded nitrate and phosphate values were very low. Of the 200 confirmed Salmonella spp. isolates recovered from the treated effluent and receiving surface waters, 93% harbored the spiC gene, 84% harbored the misL gene, and 87.5% harbored the orfL gene while 87% harbored the pipD gene. The antibiotic resistance profile revealed that the isolates were resistant to sulfamethoxazole, nalidixic acid and streptomycin, but susceptible to quinolones and third generation β-lactams. A study was carried out to determine the distribution of cyanobacteria in Sungai Sarawak Kiri. Sampling was done at 6 stations and involved two tributaries which are Sungai Bengoh and Sungai Turn. From the study there was a total of 23 cyanobacteria genera identified. Among the prominent genera were Lyngbya, Oscillatoria, Spirulina and Stigonema. From the 23 genera identified, there were 6 which were potentially toxin producers. They are Fischerella, Hapalosiphon, Lyngbya, Oscillatoria, Scytonema and Spirulina. One of the problems with toxicological and efficacy studies is the confounding of correlation between the administered drug, its metabolites and the systemic changes in molecular dynamics, i.e., the flux of drug-related molecules correlates with the molecules of system regulation. This correlation poses a problem for biomarker mining since this confounding must be untangled in order to separate true biomarker molecules from dose-related molecules. One way of achieving this goal is to perform pharmacokinetic analysis. Water meters were installed in the milk house in a location to get the best measure of water ending up in the wastewater. Typically, the water meter was installed prior to the water softener. Cooperating producers were asked to document and subtract any water usage that might have been measured by the water meter but did not contribute to the wastewater, e.g. water for feeding calves, washing tractors, used in fertilizer or herbicide tanks.. Typical water usage was between 2 to 7 gal/cow/day with most farms using less than 5 gal/cow/day. This variability was not a function of animal numbers, type of milking system, or any other parameter monitored in this project. While it is best to install a water meter to measure water usage for two months, data from this project suggests that 5 gal/cow/day may be used for designing a milk house wastewater treatment system unless site specific data is available. The statistical properties retained by an auto correlation analysis of the EEG are summarized in the power density spectrum. The amplitude and frequency characteristics of this spectrum have been found to change with analytic length, denoting an inherent EEG statistical instability which limits the resolving power of the autocor relation function. This work explores the effect of two metallic wastes (mining wastes, MW; fly ashes, FA) and micro-aeration (MA) on the anaerobic digestion of wastewater which is rich in sulfate and sulfide. Two initial COD concentrations (5,000 and 10,000 mg/L) were studied under both conditions in batch systems at 35 °C, with a fixed COD/SO ratio = 10, with 100 mg/L of S. We studied the physical, chemical, and microbiological factors that influence drinking water quality processed from River Tigris, and of the three main drinking water purification stations located at different parts of Tigris River, along with evaluation of drinking water of Al-Shula region in Baghdad city. Water samples were taken monthly from December 2009 to September 2010. Physical and chemical analyses of water included determination of temperature, pH, turbidity, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and biological oxygen demand. Propylene glycol-, ethylene glycol-, and urea-based deicers are known to have very high biochemical oxygen demand. At General Mitchell International Airport (GMIA) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, deicer application, water chemistry, and dissolved oxygen (DO) data were collected for two deicing seasons in order to evaluate and define premanagement water quality parameters prior to the implementation of a glycol management program. Three watersheds in Korea (Dochoncheon, Gongjicheon, Seolseongcheon) with different land cover characteristics were selected for non-point source pollution monitoring. Event mean concentration (EMC) was calculated, and runoff characteristics were compared through first-flushing and statistical analyses. The mean of the water quality parameters was the highest in Seolseongcheon during dry days among the three watersheds. EMCs of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total nitrogen (TN) were higher in Dochoncheon and Gongjicheon during rainy days, respectively. The upper Seolseongchun watershed showed overall greater values of chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), total organic carbon (TOC), and total phosphorus (TP). First-flush analyses indicated that SS had the strongest and TN had the weakest effects on the first flush. Biological treatment of dairy wastewater was investigated using a laboratory scale aerobic sequencing batch flexible fibre biofilm reactor (SBFFBR). The SBFFBR system was modified from a typical sequencing batch reactor system by using eight flexible fibre bundles with a very high specific surface area, which served as support for microorganisms. In this study, a water cooling tower was used as a low-rate biofilm reactor for treating municipal wastewater. The performance of the system was evaluated at three different flow rates. The biofilm reactor gave the best results at a flow rate of 1.6l/s, namely 43.3% nitrogen removal, 42.3% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, 1.7% phosphorus removal and 39.8% suspended solids (SS) removal. A transparent Cyclic Olefin Copolymer (COC) substrate is used for sensor fabrication. Standard lithographic procedures in addition to techniques like screen printing and electroplating are used to fabricate the sensor. A microbial strain of Trichosporon Cutaneum is immobilized over one pair of sensor electrodes while the other is used as a reference. Depending on the respiratory activities of the microbial strain in different samples, the BOD values of the samples can be measured in terms of difference between the output signals. The sensor layer is attached to an injection-molded passive microfluidic channel on the top. Advantages of the BOD microsensor include, but are not limited to, fast BOD measurement, disposability because of its low cost, chemically inert polymer substrate, flow-through sample injection scheme and integration of on-chip optics.

Multivariate techniques, like cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to evaluate the spatial and temporal variability of surface water quality in a large neotropical hydroelectric reservoir (Nova Ponte Reservoir). The dataset, obtained during the period of 1995-2011 from the Energy Company of Minas Gerais State (CEMIG), contain 14 parameters surveyed quarterly in 14 sites, at different depths. The CA grouped the 14 sites in three main groups: lotic sites, half of the photic zone sites and bottom sites. Statistical tests showed that only three parameters (total dissolved solids, nitrate and chemical oxygen demand) have no significant difference between cluster groups. The PCA results showed temporal changes of the water quality in all groups, illustrating modifications to the importance of the parameters over time.
